New Range Rover Sport redefines sporting luxury, combining assertive and instinctive on-road performance with Range Rover refinement, progressive design sophistication and connected convenience. The third-generation model is the most desirable, advanced and dynamically capable yet.
A suite of powerful and efficient(1) powertrains includes six-cylinder extended range Electric Hybrid, a potent new V8 and two mild hybrid six-cylinder gasoline Ingenium engine. Pure-electric propulsion will be introduced in 2024, as Land Rover continues its electrification journey.
The new Range Rover Sport is available in SE, SE Dynamic and Autobiography specifications, with a First Edition available throughout the first year of production featuring a specially curated specification.
“The exceptional New Range Rover Sport sets new standards as the ultimate sporting luxury SUV, building on seventeen years of unique customer appeal,” said, Thierry Bolloré, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover. “It is the latest embodiment of our vision to create the world's most desirable modern luxury vehicles, effortlessly blending new levels of sustainability with the signature qualities that have made Range Rover Sport so popular."
Design in detail
The sophisticated exterior is unmistakably Range Rover Sport with taut surfacing, a dynamic stance and instantly recognizable profile, perfectly accentuated by stealth-like detailing and muscular proportions – giving the impression the vehicle is poised and ready.
Dramatic proportions accentuate the Range Rover Sport vehicle’s distinctive character, with short overhangs, an assertive front-end and steeply raked glazing at the front and back. These distinct elements provide a strong and imposing road presence that communicate power and performance.
The sculpted exterior is detailed with exquisite finishes such as a stealth-like front grille and Premium LED lighting units, which create a unique Daytime Running Light (DRL) signature. The eye-catching designs, the slimmest ever fitted to a Land Rover vehicle, sit above a sculpted, double-aperture lower bumper that incorporates a horizontal bisecting body-color element that creates greater visual width, enhanced by black detailing.
Perfectly honed design elements are echoed at the rear, incorporating a sculpted tailgate with a full-width feature bearing the Range Rover script. Uninterrupted LED light graphics introduce surface LED technology to a production vehicle for the first time, providing a crisp and contemporary look at night that is vivid and consistent when viewed from any angle. A characteristic shoulder line runs the length of the vehicle, accentuated by new lower fender details and the longest spoiler ever fitted to a Range Rover.
The clean lines of the exterior are enhanced by beautifully executed flush glazing and door handles, a hidden waist rail finisher and laser-welded roof for a precise, technical and sophisticated appearance. These design-enabling technologies contribute to excellent aerodynamic performance, with New Range Rover Sport delivering a drag coefficient of just 0.29.
The new Dynamic model brings an even sharper focus to the performance SUV’s purposeful character with unique exterior design elements. Satin Grey alloy wheels are joined by Satin Burnished Copper finishes for the hood louvers and side ingots while the front grill and Range Rover lettering are finished in Matte Graphite Atlas.
With unique front and rear bumpers and bespoke lower cladding finished in body color, the Dynamic delivers the most dramatic interpretation of the Range Rover Sport formula.
“Our latest range Rover Sport embraces fully our modernist approach of vehicle design whilst amplifying its unquestionable sporting and confident character,” said Prof Gerry McGovern OBE, Chief Creative Officer, Jaguar Land Rover.
New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s reductive design extends to its all-new interior, which features the distinctive Range Rover Command Driving Position, the latest technologies and the finest materials, which combine for a compelling balance of sartorial elegance and visceral desire. The cockpit-like cabin sets the tone for the dynamic driving experience, providing excellent visibility while simultaneously cocooning the driver with a high, sloping center console and intuitive technologies.
Innovative and sustainable material choices include tactile and lightweight Ultrafabrics™ premium textiles finished in attractive new Duo Tone colorways, while a unique textile option that extends to the dashboard and door detailing is also available. Alternatives include luxurious Windsor or soft Semi-Aniline leather options.
These tactile materials seamlessly blend with new Moonlight Chrome interior finishers while elements like the integrated audio speakers, developed with Meridian™ and hidden behind the textile of the rear doors, contribute to the clean, crisp and modern aesthetic.
Engaging on every journey
New Range Rover Sport introduces more advanced chassis technologies than ever before, providing a comprehensive dynamic toolkit for the most engaging and dynamically capable driving experience.
The inherent stiffness and strength of the flexible mixed-metal architecture (MLA-Flex) – which provides up to 35 percent higher torsional stiffness than the previous Range Rover Sport – lays the foundations for this technology. It harmoniously works with a suite of systems governed by the Integrated Chassis Control system – all specially tuned for New Range Rover Sport.
“Land Rover’s pioneering flexible MLA architecture and the latest chassis systems come together to deliver the highest levels of dynamism we’ve ever seen on Range Rover Sport,” said Nick Collins, Executive Director Vehicle Programs, Jaguar Land Rover. “Integrated Chassis Control governs the comprehensive suite of innovations, co-ordinating everything from the latest switchable-volume air suspension system to our Dynamic Response Pro electronic active roll control(2). The result is the most engaging and thrilling Range Rover Sport ever.”
New Dynamic Response Pro, unique to First Edition, works hand-in-hand with the latest generation Dynamic Air Suspension, which introduces switchable-volume air springs for the first time(2).
Dynamic Response Pro helps provide roll control via a 48-volt electronic active roll control system, capable of applying up to 1000 ft-lbs of torque across each axle, for a confidence-inspiring driving experience and new levels of body control and cornering composure(2).
Dynamic Air Suspension is fitted to every New Range Rover Sport and the intelligent system enhances the bandwidth of the suspension. This works by varying the pressure within the chambers (higher pressure provides stiffer damping) to deliver traditional Range Rover comfort with the dynamic handling expected from the Range Rover Sport. To optimize responses, the vehicle monitors the road ahead using eHorizon navigation data to pre-emptively prime for upcoming bends2.
Adaptive Dynamics 2 technology contributes to dynamic capability by continuously controlling the Active Twin Valve Dampers to reduce unwanted body movements. It monitors external factors up to 500 times per second to deliver the ideal responses and, in harmony with the other chassis technologies, delivers the most precise and composed driving dynamics of any Range Rover Sport(2).
New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s cornering agility is taken to a new level with All-Wheel Steering, Torque Vectoring by Braking and the Electronic Active Differential. All-Wheel Steering provides rear-wheel steering of up to 7.3 degrees out of phase with the front wheels to achieve enhanced agility and maneuverability at low speeds, while turning in-phase for enhanced stability at high speeds7. This gives New Range Rover Sport the turning circle of a hatchback and on-road agility of a much smaller car.
The very best of the New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s chassis systems combine in the Stormer Handling Pack, unique to the First Edition, which includes Dynamic Response Pro, All-Wheel Steering, the Electronic Active Differential with Torque Vectoring by Braking and Configurable Programs(2). The latter provides the opportunity to personalize the driving modes, tailoring the driving experience both on and off road. All elements of this pack are standard and available only on the First Edition.
All New Range Rover Sport models are fitted with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, which is designed to intuitively anticipate where traction is required, efficiently engaging to help provide the most effective progress in various conditions(2).
Enhancing the off-road performance is Land Rover’s latest Terrain Response® (2) system, which intelligently applies the most appropriate settings for the terrain. New Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control makes its debut on New Range Rover Sport and helps drivers navigate tricky terrain by maintaining steady progress according to the ground conditions. Drivers can select one of four comfort settings and the system intelligently adjusts the speed accordingly, allowing the driver to focus on steering(2).
Epitome of sporting luxury
New Range Rover Sport makes every journey an event. It can be honed to be as dynamically engaging as the driver desires, while offering enhanced levels of refinement and comfort. This ability to combine dual characters, offering heightened luxury and driver-focused engagement, is made possible by a comprehensive set of technologies and features.
Providing the perfect foundation for an engaging and supportive journey are 22-way adjustable, heated and ventilated electric memory front seats with massage function and winged headrests. The flagship seats provide the ultimate support for longer journeys and involving drives on winding roads, while rear passengers benefit from ergonomically optimized seat geometry, with a .8 inch increase in legroom and .3 inch greater knee clearance, for greater comfort and support.
Next-generation Cabin Air Purification Pro is available to create and maintain the perfect driving environment. It combines PM2.5 filtration and nanoeTM X technology to significantly reduce odors, bacteria and allergens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A second nanoeTM X device is fitted to the second row to provide consistent air quality throughout the cabin. An advanced CO2 Management function allows owners to purify the cabin before a journey, or while they are driving – ensuring increased alertness for every drive, and enhanced wellbeing for all occupants.
Powerful Meridian audio systems are available, and the Meridian Signature Sound System is the most advanced audio system ever fitted to a Range Rover Sport. It presents an enveloping sound experience using 29 speakers, a new subwoofer and up to 1,430W of amplifier power – including four headrest speakers that enable those travelling in the four main seats of the vehicle to experience personal sound zones.
Next generation Active Noise Cancellation plays its part here, reducing the effect of road and tire noise entering the cabin for ultimate cabin refinement or to allow occupants to enjoy the undiluted soundtrack provided by New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s powertrain. This experience is heightened when the vehicle is in the Dynamic driving mode(2), when the advanced system brings the engine sounds to the fore. In normal driving, microphones and accelerometers inside each wheel arch constantly monitor the sounds passing into the vehicle, while digital processors calculate the level of noise-cancelling sound required to filter this from the cabin – much like a pair of high-end headphones.
Instinctive convenience contributes to the sense of modern luxury and New Range Rover features Deployable Door Handles with Proximity Sensing, Soft Door Close and Approach Unlock, for effortless entry to the vehicle while preserving the clean lines of the exterior. Automated Walkaway Lock helps ensure security.
Seamless technology
Land Rover’s powerful Electrical Vehicle Architecture (EVA 2.0) supports an ecosystem of seamless connected technologies, including Software Over The Air (SOTA). The clever technology provides remote updates for 63 electronic modules, helping ensure New Range Rover Sport remains at the cutting edge of innovation, modern technology and services throughout its life.
“Living with the New Range Rover Sport couldn’t be easier thanks to its suite of connected technologies. Our award-winning Pivi Pro(3) infotainment is at the heart of the experience and its haptic, curved floating touchscreen provides intuitive control of the vehicle systems,” Alex Heslop, Director of Electrical Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover. “To help drivers maintain their focus, embedded Amazon Alexa(8) voice AI is on hand, so customers can keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel while doing anything from setting the navigation and placing calls to selecting media sources.”
The award-winning Pivi Pro infotainment features a high resolution floating 13.1-inch curved touchscreen positioned at the center of the modernist dashboard. Controlling everything from navigation to media and vehicle settings, it learns the user’s habits and intelligently personalizes the onboard experience, becoming a truly intuitive personal assistant3.
Pivi Pro features an easy-to-use interface with a home screen that can be personalized to include most frequently used functions, while the majority of features are accessed within just two taps of the main screen. Haptic feedback enhances the system by providing positive feedback to the operator’s inputs, reducing the need for the driver to take their eyes off the road to confirm their selection. The Pivi Pro screen is complemented by a 13.7-inch Interactive Driver Display, with high-definition graphics that echo the main Pivi system, and a reconfigurable layout so drivers can see the information that’s most important to them(3).
Amazon Alexa(8) brings a new level of convenience, providing the ability to control various settings and features using natural voice commands while reducing the potential for distraction. Alexa is embedded in Pivi Pro and can simply be activated by saying “Alexa” or tapping the Alexa button on the touchscreen. The clever voice AI even integrates the use of Alexa devices in the home via the Land Rover smartphone app and Remote Skills.
Alexa works without a smartphone – all owners need to do is log in via their Amazon account for the vehicle’s built-in eSIMs to provide connectivity. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Wireless Android Auto™ are both fitted as standard5, meaning smartphones can be tucked out of the way on the dedicated 15W Wireless Device Charger, beneath the Pivi screen, without the need for trailing wires.
New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s dynamic performance and enhanced refinement is supported by the latest driver focused Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)(2). All models are fitted with Emergency Braking(9), 3D Surround Camera, including front and rear parking sensors, Wade Sensing(10), ClearSight Ground View(11) and Maneuvering Lights – Cruise Control, Driver Condition Monitor, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.
Electrified performance
A comprehensive line-up of electrified powertrains deliver customary Range Rover Sport performance. The North American range includes an extended Electric Hybrid, two six-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engines featuring mild hybrid technology and an all-new V8 Twin Turbo. In 2024, the New Range Rover Sport line-up will evolve with the addition of a fully electric model.
The new P440e Electric Hybrid is engineered to meet the demands of drivers looking for a high-performance drive, impressive efficiency and an estimated range of 48 miles(1). It seamlessly blends Land Rover’s 3.0 liter six-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine with a powerful 105kW electric motor and 31.8 kWh battery, producing a total system output of 434hp. It provides effortless acceleration and refinement, completing 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds(7).
Alternatively, the new flagship V8 Twin Turbo produces 523HP for the most exhilarating Range Rover Sport character, accelerating from 0-60mph in just 4.3 seconds(7) with Dynamic Launch engaged and bringing an added level of visceral excitement to the line-up.
The comprehensive choice of powertrains includes powerful P360 and P400 mild-hybrid straight six Ingenium gas mild-hybrid engines.
Peerless capability
New Range Rover Sport is the most dynamically capable version of Land Rover’s luxury performance SUV ever, and the most competent away from paved roads. Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) integrates with the latest all-terrain innovations and technologies to ensure its breadth of dynamic capability(2).
“New Range Rover Sport vehicle’s advanced chassis dynamics feed into its immense capability away from the tarmac, utilizing its hardware and software to full effect.,” Rory O’Murchu, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar Land Rover. “It is the first Land Rover vehicle to feature our new Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control, which has been engineered to help drivers focus on steering the vehicle by providing consistent and comfortable progress across rough terrain(2).”
Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control is an evolution of All-Terrain Progress Control and allows the driver to set the desired speed and comfort level, from a choice of four settings, over rough surfaces. It is the first Land Rover vehicle to feature this capability, bringing enhanced off-road performance to the line-up by allowing the driver to focus solely on steering the vehicle across challenging terrain(2).
Terrain Response®(20 automatically detects the surface and terrain to adapt the chassis to best deal with the situation, prompting and informing the driver via the Pivi Pro touchscreen. It works in harmony with the comprehensive chassis systems to make the most effective progress off-road(2).
New Range Rover Sport will be exclusively produced at the Solihull Manufacturing Facility in the UK alongside New Range Rover, on a state-of-the-art production line housed in the same building used to produce early Series Land Rovers vehicles. The historic location is the spiritual home of Land Rover and its reimagining as a new, ultra-modern center for Range Rover and Range Rover Sport production epitomizes the way the company protects and celebrates its unique heritage.

Full Edmunds Review: 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SUV
Vehicle overview.
The 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport drives like a sporting sedan, only it also has that unique dimension of four-wheel-drive mobility and everyday practicality that you expect from an SUV. It's always impressively sporty and utterly luxurious, whether you're driving to a summer concert at symphony hall or following the road to a winter adventure in the snowy mountains. And if you specify the optional third-row seat, you can take six friends with you.
For 2017 the Range Rover Sport’s wide-ranging capabilities have been enhanced with a now-standard suite of active safety features for all models, including autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning with lane keeping assist. A new low-traction launch mode also makes pulling away on slippery surfaces a no-stress affair. Finally, an updated infotainment system featuring a larger 10.2-inch touchscreen also makes its debut this year.
For all this, the Range Rover Sport is indeed an SUV and not a car, so it weighs in at more than 2.5 tons in its most powerful Supercharged and SVR guises. Combine this weight with those thirsty V8 engines, and you end up with particularly poor fuel economy. The optional turbodiesel powertrain boosts this husky truck's EPA estimates up to a respectable 24 mpg combined, and it's worth considering for those who'd like to avoid some of the potential pain at the fuel pumps.
Now that Americans have thoroughly embraced utility vehicles as a daily ride in all kinds of driving, there are lots of SUVs with sport-oriented personalities to choose from, including the Audi Q7, BMW X6, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Porsche Cayenne. The Range Rover Sport with its full-time four-wheel-drive systems stands apart from them in its go-anywhere, all-terrain mobility, and it'll even climb a mountain trail in street-oriented 20-inch tires without dragging its undercarriage across the rocks (if that's your thing). It also has a softer, British-style interpretation of luxury than its rivals.
The 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Also standard are front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. New to the standard safety equipment list this year are adaptive cruise control with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist.
Other available safety features include a surround-view camera system and a nifty self-parking system that handles both parallel and perpendicular parking scenarios. Its automatic space-exit feature ensures that you won't pull out in front of passing traffic or nudge the parked cars around you.
In Edmunds brake testing, a Range Rover Sport Supercharged came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, which is about average for SUVs of this size and weight, though underwhelming given the model's sporting pretensions. An SVR model stopped in 122 feet.
2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport models
Standard features on the SE trim include 19-inch alloy wheels, a self-leveling air suspension with automatic height adjustment for loading and unloading, xenon headlights, LED running lights and taillights, power-folding heated mirrors, rear privacy glass, a hands-free power liftgate, front and rear parking sensors, and keyless ignition and entry.
Within the cabin you'll find dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, 14-way power front seats, 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, driver-seat memory settings, a power-adjustable steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient interior lighting and a cargo cover. Also standard are a navigation system, voice-activated control for the convenience electronics, a rearview camera, a new 10.2-inch touchscreen, InControl Apps suite, Bluetooth (phone and streaming audio), and an eight-speaker sound system with satellite and HD radio and a USB port. Finally, all Range Rover Sport models get a standard collection of new safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, and an innovative Advanced Tow Assist that guides the driver while backing up with a trailer.
To all this standard equipment, the HSE adds 20-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a panoramic sunroof, perforated leather upholstery, heated front seats and upgraded interior trim.
The Supercharged trim level adds a V8 engine in place of the standard V6, a more sophisticated four-wheel-drive system (featuring low-range gearing for low-speed challenges and handling-enhancing torque vectoring for livelier handling), adaptive terrain-sensing drive settings (Terrain Response 2 Auto), adaptive suspension dampers, body roll stabilization and shift paddles on the steering wheel.
The Autobiography adds flashy 21-inch alloy wheels, adaptive headlights with automatic high beams, various other exterior styling enhancements, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, tri-zone climate control, extensive leather trim, 16-way power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a flat-screen virtual instrument cluster, a cooler box in the front console, a surround-view camera system and a 19-speaker Meridian sound system.
The high-performance SVR provides most of the Autobiography's features, adding or substituting SVR-specific 21-inch wheels, unique bumpers, sport-tuned suspension and steering, sportier transmission programming, special interior and exterior styling and trim details, and front and rear sport seats.
Many of the standard features on the higher trims are available as options on lower trims. Other options include 22-inch wheels, a towing package (with a full-size spare tire in two-row models), quad-zone climate control, cooled front and rear seats, a 23-speaker Meridian audio system and a rear-seat video entertainment system. A Driver Assistance package adds a head-up display, a self-parking system (with both parallel and perpendicular capability, plus automatic space exit) and 360-degree parking sensors.
The 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is available with a choice of three engines. SE and HSE models come standard with a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Available as an option is a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 that produces 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Supercharged and Autobiography versions of the Range Rover Sport get a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that puts out 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque. The SVR uses a version of this same V8 that's been tweaked to produce 550 hp and 502 lb-ft. All three engines utilize the same eight-speed automatic transmission, though the SVR version is enhanced with sportier programming.
At the Edmunds test track, a Range Rover Sport Supercharged sprinted from zero to 60 mph in a blistering 4.6 seconds. The SVR improved only a smidge to 4.5 seconds.
As you'd expect from Land Rover, every Range Rover Sport is equipped with full-time four-wheel drive. The SE and HSE come standard with a light-duty, single-speed all-wheel-drive system, while the Supercharged model is equipped with a two-speed transfer case (optional on the SE and HSE) that provides high- and low-range gearing for more serious traction challenges, including off-roading. The standard Terrain Response system features driver-selectable modes that optimize the vehicle's powertrain, suspension and electronics for increased traction on various surfaces, while the available Terrain Response 2 Auto variant (bundled with the two-speed transfer case) includes an additional adaptive mode that automatically optimizes settings while you drive. Also available is All-Terrain Progress Control (i.e., crawl control), which maintains a preset speed (up to 20 mph) over difficult terrain.
EPA fuel economy estimates start with the V6, which comes in at 19 mpg combined (17 city/23 highway), a somewhat disappointing result given that Porsche's more powerful 420-hp Cayenne S gets 20 mpg combined. The diesel produces a significantly better 24 mpg combined (22 city/28 highway). The supercharged V8 is rated at 16 mpg combined (14 city/19 highway), a predictably inefficient result for a 510-hp truck. Expect the same or a bit worse from the SVR.
All Range Rover Sports except the SVR can tow up to 7,716 pounds; the latter drops to a still-respectable 6,600 pounds.
Though it may seem unlikely for a vehicle this size, the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport comes by that "sport" designation honestly. Although its reflexes on mountain roads might not be quite as sharp as those of the Porsche Cayenne, this luxury SUV corners with confidence, while its air springs ensure that you don't have to endure the harsh ride quality associated with other SUVs equipped with sport-tuned suspensions.
And when traction is compromised by ice, snow or mud, the Range Rover Sport shines brightly, not only due to the programmed modes built into Land Rover's Terrain Response system's electronics but also a body configured to keep its undercarriage from dragging across the rocks. It's probably unlikely that this vehicle will see anything more challenging than a slippery boat ramp or a snowy ski resort, but keep in mind that you'll need to opt for the available low-range transfer case if you hope to tackle boulder-strewn trails on the way to the mountain-bike trailhead.
As far as powertrains go, the standard V6 seems anemic when pushed hard, so it's really best for highway cruising. The supercharged V8 engines give you the power you want when you've got a full load of people or just want a more sporting drive, and abundant acceleration is on tap whenever you feel the need. The available turbodiesel engine falls between these two extremes, with a bit of initial lag followed by some serious get-up-and-go at middling rpm. This excellent engine makes the expected diesel noises in around-town driving, but the clatter quickly falls away as speeds begin to climb.
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport offers a stylish space with an especially sleek look, thanks in part to the new oversize center-mounted touchscreen. The quality of the materials is excellent, including supple leather upholstery and available wood trim. While you're in motion, road and tire noise is also subdued, something that not every large SUV can deliver.
The standard front seats are comfortable, and the available 16-way sport seats are even more supportive. The seating position is low relative to that of other Land Rover models for a more sporty impression, yet visibility is still good all around. Rear seats are adult-friendly in the outboard positions; as is often the case the center portion is considerably less accommodating. The available power-folding third-row seat is useful for young children, just as with third-row seats everywhere.
That new standard 10.2-inch touchscreen responds to smartphone-like gestures, including swipe and pinch-to-zoom, and it also features crisp graphics and rapid response times that make for easier access to settings and controls. We like the ability of the InControl App system to integrate Apple and Android-based smartphone apps right into the display.
The Range Rover Sport is shorter overall than a standard Range Rover in order to make it more responsive during driving, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that it offers 27.7 cubic feet of stowage behind the second-row seats. Fold all the rear seats down and you end up with 62.2 cubic feet of space, which is less room than in some compact crossovers but on par with the space in competitors such as the Porsche Cayenne. The foot-operated power tailgate makes it easy to load cargo even with your hands full.

The Range Rover name is simultaneously associated with world-spanning adventure and high-fashion opulence. SUVs wearing the Range Rover badge have conquered the most unforgiving off-road terrain and ferried celebrities and VIPs to posh red-carpet events. This dichotomy is a feat that few automakers have achieved, and Range Rover’s history helps to explain how the model became so dominant today. Here’s everything you need to know about Range Rover.
Land Rover Vs. Range Rover
First things first: Range Rover is the model name, and Land Rover is the manufacturer. So, technically, if you’re driving a Range Rover, the official registration paperwork will describe it as a Land Rover Range Rover. The confusion begins with Rover, a British company that started out building bicycles in the 1880s, then expanded into motorcycles. In 1901, Rover built its first automobile, and the company continued as an automotive brand until 2000. In 1948, the Rover company built its first four-wheel-drive vehicle, which was named Land Rover. After several changes in ownership and management, Land Rover Ltd. was launched as its own standalone company in 1978. Through most of its history, Land Rover has also had a long relationship with Britain’s royal family.
The First Range Rover
From the end of World War II until the late 1960s, Rover built a single off-road utility vehicle, the Land Rover—often referred to as Series I, II, or III, and the precursor to the long-lived Land Rover Defender. In 1967, Rover began building prototypes for a larger four-wheel-drive vehicle, and in 1970 the first mass-production Range Rover was unveiled. From the beginning, the Range Rover was revered for its modern styling compared to the rough, rudimentary Land Rover—an early Range Rover was even displayed at the Louvre Museum in Paris as an example of stellar modern industrial design.
The Road Rover Experiment
After World War II, Rover focused on building conventional passenger cars and a small number of Land Rover utility trucks. The company briefly considered a new type of vehicle, something that today we would understand as an early attempt at a crossover SUV. The “Road Rover” project used the rear-wheel-drive chassis from a Rover P4 sedan, paired with a taller, roomier, boxier body inspired by the Land Rover. Various Road Rover prototypes were built throughout the 1950s, but the concept never led to a production vehicle.
Early Simplicity
From 1970 to 1981, the Range Rover was simply viewed as a larger, roomier alternative to the Land Rover. In this era, four-wheel-drive vehicles were expected to be rugged and capable, prioritizing off-road prowess over any thought of luxury. For the first 11 years of production, the Range Rover was only available as a two-door, with very few luxury appointments, a four-speed manual transmission, and an interior made of durable vinyl and plastics. The vehicle was technologically revolutionary, using modern coil-spring suspension instead of old-fashioned leaf springs, and offering permanent four-wheel drive and disc brakes front and rear—all of which set it apart from most other four-wheel-drive vehicles of the time. But it would take a few years for the Range Rover to morph into a luxury vehicle.
The First Four-Door Range Rover
Before 1981, if you wanted a four-door Range Rover, your only option was an aftermarket conversion. Numerous companies recognized that a four-door Range Rover could be an appealing family vehicle, and eventually, the Land Rover company agreed. The first factory-built four-door Range Rover was introduced in 1981, largely based on the aftermarket conversions built by Swiss luxury-car converter Monteverdi. The four-door Range Rover was such a smash hit, Land Rover dropped the two-door Range Rover in England after 1984, though it was sold in other European markets for another 10 years.
Range Rover Moves Upmarket
After the introduction of the four-door Range Rover, the model began a steady move out of the utility-vehicle segment and into luxury territory. Leather upholstery and an automatic transmission became available in 1984; a redesigned dashboard and wood interior trim came in 1985. The exposed door hinges of early models were soon hidden for a more refined exterior, and dashboard switches from Austin and Rover luxury sedans were soon incorporated into the Range Rover’s interior. Officially, Range Rovers were not sold in America until 1987, but grey-market imports were common. 1992 saw the introduction of the Range Rover LWB, with a wheelbase stretched by eight inches to add legroom for rear-seat passengers.
The Expanded Range Rover Universe
In 2005, Land Rover introduced its first Range Rover variant, the Range Rover Sport. Initially based on a modified version of the smaller Land Rover Discovery platform, the Range Rover Sport adapted styling cues from the full-size Range Rover to a smaller, nimbler platform. In 2011, Land Rover added another model with the Range Rover Evoque, a subcompact crossover SUV that, at one point, was available in three-door, five-door, and convertible variants. In 2017, Land Rover introduced a fourth Range Rover variant, the sleek and aerodynamic Range Rover Velar.
Revolution of 1995
The first-generation Range Rover was sold for nearly 25 years, with continual small improvements but no major redesigns. That changed with the unveiling of the 1995 Land Rover Range Rover, known internally as “P38.” Unlike the first-generation Range Rover, the P38 was designed from the start as a luxurious, high-end vehicle, with height-adjustable air suspension, Connolly leather upholstery, and in later models, optional satellite navigation. During production of the P38 Range Rover, the Land Rover company was sold to BMW, then later taken over in 2000 by Ford.
Third Generation
The third Range Rover generation, known as L322, cemented the model’s image as a high-luxury vehicle. Designed under BMW, the L322 shared drivetrain and electronic components with the E38-generation BMW 7-series and the E39-generation BMW 5-series. This was the first Range Rover to exclusively offer an automatic transmission, and one of the first SUVs in the world to offer fully independent suspension front and rear. Three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroofs, rear-seat DVD players, touchscreen nav systems, and backup cameras all proved that the Range Rover was now firmly in the luxury segment. In later years, supercharged V8s making up to 503 hp were available.

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it will locally assemble the flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs in India, thereby bringing down their prices significantly. The Range Rover 3.0-litre diesel HSE LWB is now priced at Rs 2.36 crore (down by Rs 44 lakh) and the Range Rover Sport 3.0-litre diesel Dynamic SE is now priced at Rs 1.40 crore (down by Rs 29 lakh); all prices ex-showroom, India.
Jaguar Land Rover local assembly operations
India is the first country outside of the UK to locally produce the two SUVs, and it joins the Velar , Evoque , Jaguar F-Pace and the Discovery Sport that are already produced here at JLR’s facility in Pune. Apart from a massive reduction in price, local assembly will also help bring down the waiting period on these SUVs.
Surprisingly, the Defender , which was JLR’s bestselling model in FY2024 with 1,314 units – nearly three times the Range Rover – continues to be a full import. JLR began local assembly in 2011 through a contract manufacturing agreement with Tata Motors ; the Freelander was the first locally produced product.
Locally assembled Range Rover details
The Range Rover has been an absolute favourite among Bollywood stars, sports stars and the rich in general, selling 394 units in FY2024 – significant for an SUV that ranges between Rs 2 crore and 4.46 crore in import guise. Most Range Rovers in India are the higher-spec LWB variant.
Land Rover hasn’t revealed the detailed price list of the locally assembled Range Rover yet, but it has stated that the 3.0-litre diesel HSE LWB variant is priced at Rs 2.36 crore while the 3.0-litre petrol Autobiography LWB is priced at Rs 2.60 crore – a whopping reduction of Rs 44 lakh and Rs 56 lakh, respectively. That's also a lot more affordable than the recently launched Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 that's priced at Rs 3.35 crore. The short wheelbase (SWB) versions will continue to be a full import, though, as will the 4.4-litre V8-engined variants.| Also read: Most powerful SUVs under Rs 25 lakh in India
The locally assembled Range Rover will be offered with two engine options – the 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol producing 392hp and 550Nm, and the 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel producing 345hp and 700Nm. Deliveries for the locally assembled Range Rover start today.
Locally assembled Range Rover Sport details
The Range Rover Sport sold 404 units in FY2024, with import versions costing between Rs 1.69 crore and 2.80 crore. Meanwhile, the locally assembled Range Rover Sport starts at Rs 1.40 crore for both the petrol and diesel 3.0-litre Dynamic SE variants, bringing down the price by Rs 29 lakh for both; a detailed price list for the locally assembled model is awaited.
The locally assembled Range Rover Sport will also be offered with the same 392hp, 3.0-litre petrol and 345hp, 3.0-litre diesel engines; the 4.4-litre V8 SV Edition will continue to be an import. Deliveries for the locally assembled Sport will commence on August 16, 2024.
JLR has also announced the opening of ‘Range Rover House’ in Alibaug, Maharashtra, that’s curated to offer an exclusive and modern luxury experience to the brand’s discerning clientele. The facility will also have some of the first locally produced Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs on display.
