Funding Opportunities for Graduate School

Financing graduate study in economics is often done in conjunction with the student's PhD program. Most graduate school funding is not need-dependent, but instead tends to be merit-dependent.

Funding is generally awarded in the form of fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships. Different programs award funding for different durations. According to the study, " Attrition in Economics Ph.D. Programs ," (Stock, Finegan, and Siegfried, 2006), about 80 percent of the incoming class of economics PhD students at a representative sample of PhD programs were awarded financial aid during their first year of graduate study. The largest proportion of these was in the form of fellowships (which generally have no work requirement). The second most common financial aid was in the form of teaching and/or research assistantships (which generally include a work requirement).

Securing some form of aid and receiving a fellowship are more common among students enrolled at top-tier programs.

Financial Support

Mit scholarships.

Incoming students who wish to be considered for financial aid from MIT should indicate this when completing the online application form . These awards are made by April 15 and typically cover the first two years of study.

Department funding

For years one and two, all students admitted to our PhD program are offered (either directly by the department, or as a supplement to other funds) fellowship support equivalent to: full tuition for the academic year, twelve-month individual health insurance, and a stipend for the nine-month academic year.

In years three through six, all students are offered full-time teaching or research assistantships that provide full tuition, a nine-month stipend, and health insurance. This support is contingent on satisfactory academic progress.

The department also offers paid summer research assistantships and summer fellowships as a supplement to academic-year stipends.

Institute rules require every holder of a graduate scholarship or fellowship to pursue a full-time program of graduate study.

Dissertation fellowships

The department is currently able to offer a limited number of competitive dissertation fellowships that allow PhD students in years four or five to have a year free from TA and RA duties.

Outside funding

Incoming students are encouraged to apply for external sources of funding, such as NSF graduate fellowships , UniCredit Foundation Scholarships , SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships , and JASSO scholarships .

For years three through six, the department is able in some cases to provide supplementary funding for students with partial outside fellowships, thereby allowing them to reduce their TA and RA work requirements. Such supplements are provided to all students with active NSF fellowships, and supplements to other fellowships are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Health insurance

Your mandatory health insurance fee is covered by your award (and is not taken out of your stipend) and includes accident and hospitalization insurance. You will receive this insurance unless you can demonstrate that you have equivalent coverage through another source and complete a waiver with MIT Medical .

The Ph.D. Program in the Department of Economics at Harvard is addressed to students of high promise who wish to prepare themselves in teaching and research in academia or for responsible positions in government, research organizations, or business enterprises. Students are expected to devote themselves full-time to their programs of study.

The program prepares students for productive and stimulating careers as economists. Courses and seminars offered by the department foster an intellectually active and stimulating environment. Each week, the department sponsors more than 15 different seminars on such topics as environmental economics, economic growth and development, monetary and fiscal policy, international economics, industrial organization, law and economics, behavioral economics, labor economics, and economic history. Top scholars from both domestic and international communities are often invited speakers at the seminars.  The Harvard community outside of the department functions as a strong and diverse resource. Students in the department are free to pursue research interests with scholars throughout the University. Faculty of the Harvard Law School, Kennedy School of Government, and Harvard Business School, for example, are available to students for consultation, instruction, and research guidance. As a member of the Harvard community, students in the department can register for courses in the various schools and have access to the enormous library resources available through the University. There are over 90 separate library units at Harvard, with the total collections of books and pamphlets numbering over 13 million.  Both the department and the wider University draw some of the brightest students from around the world, which makes for a student body that is culturally diverse and likely unequaled in the range of intellectual interests of its members. These factors combine to add an important dimension to the educational process. Students are able to learn from one another, collaborate on research projects and publications, and form bonds that are not broken by distance once the degree is completed and professional responsibilities lead them in different directions.

Doctoral Program

The Ph.D. program is a full time program leading to a Doctoral Degree in Economics.  Students specialize in various fields within Economics by enrolling in field courses and attending field specific lunches and seminars.  Students gain economic breadth by taking additional distribution courses outside of their selected fields of interest.

General requirements

Students  are required to complete 1 quarter of teaching experience. Teaching experience includes teaching assistantships within the Economics department or another department .

University's residency requirement

135 units of full-tuition residency are required for PhD students. After that, a student should have completed all course work and must request Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status.

Department degree requirements and student checklist

1. core course requirement.

Required: Core Microeconomics (202-203-204) Core Macroeconomics (210-211-212) Econometrics (270-271-272).  The Business School graduate microeconomics class series may be substituted for the Econ Micro Core.  Students wishing to waive out of any of the first year core, based on previous coverage of at least 90% of the material,  must submit a waiver request to the DGS at least two weeks prior to the start of the quarter.  A separate waiver request must be submitted for each course you are requesting to waive.  The waiver request must include a transcript and a syllabus from the prior course(s) taken.  

2.  Field Requirements

Required:  Two of the Following Fields Chosen as Major Fields (click on link for specific field requirements).  Field sequences must be passed with an overall grade average of B or better.  Individual courses require a letter grade of B- or better to pass unless otherwise noted.

3.  Distribution

Required:  Four other graduate-level courses must be completed. One of these must be from the area of economic history (unless that field has already been selected above). Caves Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship was established by Douglas W. Caves (PhD, Economics, 1980) and Sherry A. Caves to support graduate students in the Department of Economics at UW-Madison doing dissertation level empirical research in the doctoral program. The intent of this fellowship is to reward and distinguish excellence and scholastic merit in the doctoral program.

Christensen Dissertation Fellowship in Empirical Economics

This fellowship was established by Lau and Dianne Christensen. Lau was a faculty member at UW-Madison from 1967 to 1987, and Dianne was a Visitor in the Economics Department for several years in the 1980s. This fellowship is awarded to a student doing an empirical dissertation.

Christensen Scholarship in Empirical Economics

Lau and Diane Christensen established this scholarship. Lau was a faculty member here from 1967 to 1987, and Dianne was a Visitor in the Department for several years in the 1980s. The purpose of this joint student-faculty award is to A) encourage and support research by PhD students doing empirical work with contemporary estimation methods, and B) to support faculty who serve as mentors for Ph.D. students doing dissertations.

Culbertson Field Paper Scholarship

The Culbertson Scholarship was established with a generous contribution from Dr. Francis Culbertson, in memory of her late husband, UW Madison Economics Professor John M. Culbertson. The scholarship is for the PhD student who writes the best field paper.

David Edwin Davies Dissertation Fellowship

The David Edwin Davies Dissertation Fellowship is based on outstanding research potential and overall research excellence. This fellowship was established by a trust created by Richard Davies (BA, Economics and Political Science, 1979).

Alice S. Gengler Dissertation Fellowship

The late Alice Gengler received her BA in Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1927. The Alice Gengler Wisconsin Distinguished Graduate Fellowship is made possible by the generosity of Alice Gengler and her family.  It is awarded for excellence in research.

JPGI funded Scholarships and Fellowships

The  JPGI  honors UW-Madison alumna Juli Plant Grainger.  The following fellowships and scholarships are made possible by a substantial investment in the Department by David W. Grainger and the Grainger Foundation.

Donald D. Hester Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship is named after the late Donald Hester, a UW Madison Economics Professor from 1968 to 2000. Preference is given to students who excel in teaching and conduct research in macroeconomics.

Susan B. Kocin Scholarship for Labor Economics

This scholarship, funded by the Kocin family, is awarded to promote women in the field of labor economics.

Walter A. Morton Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship supports a meritorious doctoral student in the Department of Economics and was created through a fund established in 1984 by Rosalie Morton (BS 1928), widow of late UW Economics Professor Walter Morton (Ph.D. 1927), and her son Stephen D. Morton (Ph.D. 1962).

Mary Claire Aschenbrener Phipps Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship was established by Charles Phipps in honor of his late wife, Mary Claire Phipps (BA ’51, Economics) to attract more female economists to the University of Wisconsin to inspire the next generation of female economists. The fellowship supports an outstanding female doctoral student.

Dorothy Rice Dissertation Fellowship

The Dorothy Rice Dissertation Fellowship was created in memory of health care economics pioneer and UW Alumna Dorothy Rice (Ph.D. 1941) who left a lasting legacy on the Federal Health Care Policy. Her research paved way for the creation of the Medicare program. The fellowship is awarded to an outstanding doctoral student in the Department of Economics.

Robock Scholarship in Empirical or Experimental Economics

The late Dr. Stefan Robock established this scholarship.  Professor Robock received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin in 1938. He did graduate work at Wisconsin and Harvard.  The purpose of Dr. Robock’s gift is to support students and research by students and faculty in the Department of Economics, with preference being given to those doing empirical and/or field research or working in the field of experimental economics.

Shih Graduate Student Fellowship (Ko and Ying Shih Dissertation Fellowship)

May Shih and Willy Shih have honored their parents, Ko and Ying Shih, by establishing a fellowship in their names to assist graduate students in the Department of Economics. Ko Shih received his PhD in Economics (1950) and Ying Shih received her PhD in Applied Statistics (1952) at UW-Madison. Both Ko and Ying Shih were international students, so their children, May Shih and Willy Shih, would like the funds to be used for a dissertation fellowship with a slight preference given to international students.

Mary Sue and Mike Shannon Dissertation Fellowship

Richard e. stockwell dissertation fellowship.

This fellowship was established by a trust created by Richard E. “Archie” Stockwell. Archie received his B.S. in 1940 from the University of Wisconsin. The fellowship is awarded to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in research.

Walker Family Dissertation Fellowship

This fellowship, offered by the Department of Economics, was established by a trust created by Willard T. Walker (BA Economics 1955) and Willard T. Walker Jr. (BA Economics 1984) and Molly Walker Allen (BA Journalism and Mass Communication 1989) to recognize outstanding research potential and overall research excellence. Admission Requirements

Admission to the Ph.D. program requires the submission of a completed application including Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores and a completed bachelor’s degree with coursework in the following:

• Intermediate microeconomics
• Intermediate macroeconomics
• Regression analysis
• Mathematical economics or equivalent

Students who enter the program with a master’s degree in economics may be eligible to waive up to 15 credit hours, depending on their coursework.

An established legacy of excellence since 1935, the department of economics has celebrated more than 80 years of service in education and developing researchers., full & part-time program options.

We offer full-time and part-time options for completing the PhD in economics program. For those who wish to pursue the program full-time, this program can be completed in as little as three years. For those who would rather pursue the program part-time, we will sit down and work out your plan of study to fit your needs and desires. The time to complete the PhD degree part-time will depend on the specifics of that plan of study, but a common plan results in completion in five or six years.

Estimated program costs are based on completing 45 credit hours calculated by 2021-2022 rates. Costs exclude textbooks and student health insurance. If you would like to view a complete schedule of tuition, fees, meal plans and financial aid opportunities, visit the Spartan Central website .

The Department typically provides tuition waivers to well-qualified doctoral applicants along with a stipend, fellowship, or scholarship to reimburse student fees and the majority of cost of living expenses. Our PhD students work under the guidance of faculty who conduct nationally and internationally recognized research that promotes economic understanding, policy improvements, and economic development. Whether it is classroom interactions or one-on-one discussions, you’ll find our faculty always have time to support you as you make your way through the PhD program.

Classes at the doctoral level are small, and students benefit from direct and frequent interactions with faculty.  Students begin working in applied research early in their programs and are encouraged to work with faculty to identify policy problems they want to investigate through their dissertations.  They frequently work with faculty on grant-funded research, and co-author papers with faculty for presentation at regional and national professional meetings.

Students Who Work (and Play) Together

Because our PhD program is small, you’ll also find that it’s easy to get to know your fellow students. PhD work can be a daunting process, but it’s made easier and more rewarding when students work together. We strongly encourage our students to work together, to help each other out, and share in their successes.

Whether it is work in the classroom, as a graduate assistant, or on a dissertation, you’ll find our students accessible and willing to pitch in to help. That help sometimes extends beyond the formal boundaries of the program; sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is to help them relax!

Opportunities to Share Your Work

Part of being an economist is sharing one’s work, getting feedback, and, yes, sometimes engaging in discussions over contentious issues. As a result, we strongly encourage our PhD students to share their work at all stages of the research process. This can take place informally through one-on-one conversations with faculty or fellow students, casual group conversations at the end of the day, or even by exchanging written work and asking for feedback. But formal interactions are also an important part of the world of the economists, so the Department also strongly encourages PhD students to participate in our informal Brown Bag Presentations intended for work still in the early stages and in our more formal Seminar Series where more complete, polished work can be shared.

Graduate Scholarships

We are now accepting scholarship applications for academic year 2024-2025.

(The deadline for receipt of applications: Noon on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 )

This application ONLY can be used by (1) current UNT graduate students in the Department of Economics; or (2) current UNT undergraduate Economics majors who will be joining the Master's program in Economics in either summer 2024 or fall 2024. This application is for all graduate scholarships awarded by the Department of Economics at the University of North Texas. By filling out and submitting this form, you will be considered for all available departmental scholarships for which you qualify.

In order to qualify for a graduate scholarship, applicants must: (1) have a minimum GPA of 3.0; (2) have earned no grades of "C" or below in any Economics graduate classes; (3) have completed at least 9 hours of Economics graduate coursework by the end of fall 2023 OR (4) be a UNT undergraduate who is entering the graduate program in summer/fall of 2024; AND intend to enroll as a full-time graduate student in the Master's program in Economics during fall 2024.

Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarship Descriptions

Alumni, faculty members, and other friends of the Department fund our scholarships. Availability of funds within a given academic year determine how many can be awarded. The Economics Department Scholarship Committee is comprised of graduate and undergraduate advisors who review all applications. The dollar value of each scholarship varies from year to year, depending upon the availability of funds. In most cases, awards range from $500 to $1,000.

The Faculty Scholarship in Memory of Karla Lynch

This scholarship is in memory of long-time faculty member Karla Lynch, who passed away on February 21, 2015. Karla was also an alumna of our program, earning her Master's in economics in 1992. She was a master teacher and a caring mentor, and she touched the lives of generations of students and colleagues and friends fortunate enough to have known her. The scholarship is funded by Karla's colleagues and many friends as a way of honoring her commitment to her students and to higher education in general.

The Lewis M. Abernathy Scholarship in Economics

This scholarship is named in honor of Professor Lew Abernathy (1932-2005). Dr. Abernathy served the Department from 1967 until his retirement in 1999. He was chairman from 1984 to 1994. His passion was labor education and he directed the UNT Institute for Labor and Industrial Relations and the UNT Econ Labor Education Program. This scholarship is merit based for full-time graduate or undergraduate majors in economics. Students must have a minimum 3.0 average and maintain full time enrollment status unless they are graduating.

The Rising Eagle Scholarship

This scholarship is for current economics majors who are graduating with a BA/BS/BBA in Economics and who will join the Master's program in Economics in the fall of the coming year. The number and amount of awards depend on the availability of funding.

Department of Economics Graduate Scholarships for Academic Excellence

This scholarship is for outstanding graduate students in the Master's program in Economics who are making good progress towards completion of their degree. Several of these scholarships may be awarded if funds are available.

Faculty of the Department of Economics Scholarships

This scholarship is made possible by the contributions of current faculty members in the Department of Economics. The scholarship is merit based and is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate economics major with an outstanding academic record. Students must have a minimum 3.0 average and maintain full time enrollment status unless they are graduating.

The Aaron Wuensch Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created by members of the Department of Economics and the family and friends of Aaron Wuensch, a former graduate student in the Department of Economics who lost his life in June of 2009. This scholarship is intended to honor the memory of this outstanding student and fine young man.

William H. & Virginia W. Wallace Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Dr. William H. Wallace and his wife. Dr. Wallace was an economist and served as adjunct instructor at UNT from 2001 to 2012. He had a brilliant academic career at numerous universities, including the University of Illinois, Duke University, the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA (where he was Dean of the College of Business). He also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank, serving on the Board of Governors in Washington, DC, and as First Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Dallas branch. The scholarship is open to new and continuing full-time graduate students in Economics. New students must meet minimum entrance standards; continuing students must meet academic performance standards of the department and have a minimum 3.5 GPA.

HOUS Scholarships

This scholarship is made possible by the contributions of Richard Johnson (BS'16) in honor of Drs. Hauge and Rous and their contributions to economics education. The scholarship is merit based and is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate economics major with an outstanding academic record. Students must have a minimum 3.0 average and maintain full time enrollment status unless they are graduating.

Full Time Enrollment Status: Undergraduate students must have at least a 12-hour academic load to achieve full time enrollment status. Graduate students must be enrolled in 9 hours of graduate coursework (5000-level or higher) to be considered full time.

PhD in applied economics

Our PhD program offers students a strong foundation in economic theory and econometrics, as well as the opportunity to conduct original research alongside world-renowned scholars.

We provide training in the areas of public policy, labour economics, macro-economics, monetary economics, econometrics, natural resources, environmental and health economics. We believe in an ‘open-door’ atmosphere which engages and stimulates graduate students in their chosen paths of research.

Through our rigorous academic programs and applied research experience, students develop their communication and analytical skills and are prepared for a career in academia or the private sector upon graduation.

PhD students receive $104,000 over 12 on-campus terms, and have the opportunity to work as research and teaching assistants. For students wishing to advance their teaching skills, we also have a limited number of course instructor positions available.

Data access

Students can access the Southwestern Ontario Research Data Centre (SWORDC), one the few data centres that provides access to Statistics Canada data sets in master file form. SWORDC is conveniently housed in the PAS building adjacent to Economics in Hagey Hall.

PhD in Economics

McMaster’s community of scholars includes faculty, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, and graduate students. Through this program, students will become independent, professional economists using state-of-the-art methods to analyze economic phenomena. Areas of specialization include Econometrics, Growth and Monetary, Health, International, Labour, Population, and Public Economics.

We admit 5-8 PhD students each year, which results in small classes and intensive interaction between students and faculty. PhD students may choose a co-op option (formally called Work Integrated Learning) associated with this program after passing the comprehensive exams.   

About the Program

Graduates of the PhD program in economics become professional and independent economists able to analyze economic phenomena using state-of-the-art techniques. Graduates primarily pursue one of two career tracks. One is to become an economics professor. We regularly place our graduates in academic positions, both in departments of economics and in interdisciplinary settings with a strong economics focus, such as schools of public policy. A second option is a career in the public or private sector. We place our graduates in high-quality research positions within government ministries and agencies, such as the Department of Finance and the Bank of Canada, in international organizations, and, less frequently, in the private sector.   

Faculty members of the department are affiliated with or lead a number of research facilities and centers at McMaster. These centers and facilities support economics research by graduate students.  Secure Empirical Analysis Lab (SEAL) houses a wide range of confidential micro-data that can be used to conduct research in the areas of education, charities, and public services, with data holding expanding on a continuous basis. Statistics Canada Research Data Centre (RDC) (Mike Veall, Director), houses the master files of a large variety of Statistics Canada survey data plus an increasing array of public-sector administrative microdata (e.g., census data, vital statistics, employment data, justice system data) that support economic research. Canada’s first computer-mediated experimental economics laboratory, the  McMaster Decision Science Laboratory (McDSL) (Bradley Ruffle, Director) provides the capability for conducting controlled economic experiments across a wide range of economic fields. The Faculty of Social Science is committed to developing state-of-the-art facilities for empirical research, including expanded microdata analysis and economic experiments in the L.R. Wilson Hall.  

Requirements and Timelines

The first phase is passing the comprehensive macroeconomic and microeconomic theory exams. To accomplish this, students must complete the following coursework:    

• two microeconomics theory courses (ECON 721** and ECON 722)   
• two macroeconomic theory courses (ECON 723** and ECON 724)   
• two econometrics courses (ECON 761* and ECON 762)   
• ECON 765 (as it is a required course)   
• elective courses must be passed prior to writing comprehensive examinations in any area (see phase 2)     

Students entering the PhD program from our MA in Economics program will already have completed the required courses and two electives; these students would require approximately six more electives. The Economics waiver exam may allow PhD students who enter the PhD program from another university to receive credit for ECON 761. Electives must be chosen so that the student satisfies the coursework requirements of his or her chosen fields for comprehensive exams (see the list below). Most electives are taken from courses offered by the economics department, but a student may also take up to two courses from other departments, with the approval of the graduate chair (economics) and the course instructor. Students in recent years, for example, have taken finance courses offered by the DeGroote School of Business , health-related courses offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences , and statistics courses offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics .   

After the successful completion of the first year of coursework, comprehensive exams in micro and macro theory are typically given in May or June.  

Phase 2    

The second phase involves passing comprehensive exams in two areas of specialization and writing a research paper. The field examination committee may require that candidates complete specific courses before taking these exams. Below are the typical areas of specialization and the typical courses required for each. A graduate chair may, however, permit additional specializations in areas where the department has a research strength provided they are based on courses offered by the department.

Field exams are normally written after the second year of coursework has been successfully completed. Candidates have two chances to pass each comprehensive exam. Within 18 months of starting the program, students must pass the micro and macro theory comprehensive exams. The exams must be completed within 24 months of beginning the program. Within 27 months of entering the doctoral program, the student must complete a research paper. The research paper will be presented in the Fall term during the PhD workshop discussed below. The research paper must be accepted by the supervisory committee.     

Phase 3    

The thesis is the third phase. At this point, students may choose to enroll in additional courses if they are relevant to their proposed research. With the approval of the Graduate Chair, up to four half courses may be taken outside of the department. In addition to writing a thesis and taking courses, students must achieve the Active Researcher Milestone which involves participating in the department’s research activities (for example, by attending seminars, PhD workshops and meeting with visiting speakers) and regularly presenting their research. The Active Researcher Milestone must be achieved annually until graduation.     

At this stage, students are required to complete the following seminar courses. Students who have passed all their comprehensive examinations should register for ECON 798 in the Fall term that immediately follows and present the research paper. Doctoral students typically take a total of 12-14 graduate courses at this university.

Co-op Option: Students in the PhD program who have successfully completed the comprehensive examinations may apply for the co-op option associated with this degree program. The number of students who will be accepted will be small and will depend on available placements. To complete the PhD co-op option, the student must work a total of eight months in either one or two placements and successfully complete both ECON 796 Economics Co-op Work Term I and ECON 797 Economics Co-op Work Term II.   

*A student who has a particularly strong background in econometrics can elect to write the econometrics waiver exam. Students who pass the waiver exam are allowed to replace ECON 761 (term 1 of econometrics) with an elective course. These students take ECON 762 in term 2 and complete the econometrics project. Credit for ECON 761 will appear on their transcripts.  

**All students registering in ECON 721 (Micro Theory 1) or ECON 723 (Macro Theory 1) are encouraged to take the mathematics preparation course ECON 765, an intensive ten-day refresher course in mathematics (MATH CAMP). Math camp is given in August, prior to the start of regular graduate courses for the fall term. After the completion of this course, students are tested regarding their mathematics preparation. The course has two parts. Part I covers topics related to ECON 721-Micro Theory I and part II covers topics related to ECON 723-Macro Theory I and matrix algebra. Each part has its own final exam. Students registered in ECON 721(ECON 723) must write the exam related to part I (part II). A student’s score on the part I (part II) exam counts as 10% of the student’s final grade in ECON 721-Micro Theory I (ECON 723-Macro Theory I).   

***Incoming students are strongly encouraged to enroll in ECON 4T03 so they are well prepared for first term micro.

As a minimum, a standard Canadian entrant into our PhD program will have a Master’s degree in economics from a recognized university and will have maintained B+ average in their master’s study. We emphasize that these are minimum standards; those admitted typically have stronger academic records.  

Students from foreign universities are expected to have equivalent backgrounds. Although equivalency is difficult to determine, here are some guidelines for a few countries from which we commonly receive inquiries:  

• India: First-class standing for the Bachelor’s degree and upper-second-class standing for the Master’s degree.  
• Bangladesh and Pakistan: First-class standing in both the bachelors and master’s degrees.  
• China: A four-year degree with an average of at least 85%. The subject area must be ECONOMICS, not business. Strong skills in mathematics and statistics/econometrics are expected.  

A student whose native language is not English, and who has not completed an English-language degree in a predominantly English-speaking country, must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for the Dept of Economics is 580 (237 on the computerized exam; 92 iBT); the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7.5 . Please note, the minimum requirement for the Dept of Economics is higher than the School of Graduate Studies minimum of 6.5.

Financial Aid  

Students to whom we offer admission are automatically considered for financial assistance – no special forms need be filled out. Funding is awarded on academic excellence and the availability of funds. Funding is open to all domestic and international students.  

All students admitted to the PhD program are offered two forms of financial assistance. The first is a Teaching Assistant (TA) position, which normally requires the student to perform 130 hours of marking or tutoring in each of the fall and winter terms. The second is scholarship support. In addition, many upper-year PhD students receive support in the form of a Research Assistantship (RA) in lieu of a TA, in which they work on a research project with a faculty member. The minimum annual financial assistance provided to a PhD student is $17,500 during each of first four years of doctoral study. If a student’s study extends beyond four years, financial assistance as a TA or RA may be available, but it is not guaranteed. Finally, in addition to the financial assistance provided in a letter of offer, students are eligible for TA and RA positions during the spring and summer terms, which provides support above that available during the Fall and Winter terms.

We offer three PhD Scholarships for 3 years (with possible extension for one more year), starting during the 2024-2025 academic year. We are looking for students who aim at enrolling on the PhD program in Economics (University of Barcelona) . The candidates must have a Master in Economics completed by summer 2024 and apply to the PhD program in Economics, University of Barcelona (http://www.ub.edu/school-economics/phd-in-economics/ ).

The successful candidate will develop their research under the supervision of researchers belonging to the IEB Research Programs (see fields of interest at www.ieb.ub.edu ). Successful candidate will have teaching duties in applied economics at undergraduate level within the department of Economics (area of Public Economics) of the Faculty of Economics and Business (UB).

The yearly gross amount of the stipend is 17.740€ (Salary comes with full social security benefits). The scholarships also cover PhD tuition fees and travel grants for conferences.

Roth Scholarship in Economics award, up to $2,500 , for Fall 2023 to promising students in the field of Economics who are active, full-time majors at Stony Brook University.
