Welcome to the Winter 2022 Appeal

Dear Friend,

Loving greetings to you from the ashrams of Paramahansa Yogananda. As we look forward to the coming new year, our hearts are full of gratitude for the generous outpouring of support that we received over this past year from members and friends like you.

Your generosity has helped us expand many of our initiatives to provide greater access to those looking to put our Guru’s wisdom and guidance into practice.

Paramahansaji long ago foresaw the numerous changes the world would need to go through to become more harmonious for all of humanity. Such positive transformations, he said, could only be based on a foundation of practical spirituality, such as the universal Self-Realization Fellowship teachings he brought to the West at the behest of his line of gurus.

Practice these teachings, and you also shall see how beautiful life becomes.

Please read on to discover how you can help Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) to further spread these soul-liberating teachings to a world greatly in need.

Offering Digital Resources for Greater Reach

We hope you are enjoying the recently upgraded and redesigned SRF/YSS app, where anyone can now receive daily inspiration from Paramahansaji’s teachings, draw from a bounty of guided and live group meditations, read and share SRF news and blog posts, and participate in the weekly online inspirational services.

If you are an SRF Lessons student, you can also take advantage of many new features designed to enhance your spiritual study, including a “text-to-speech” function which allows your Lessons to be read to you.

Watch this helpful introductory video to the SRF/YSS app.

We are happy to report that we are receiving enthusiastic reviews from many users of the app who are finding that it is helping their spiritual practices in new ways.

One member recently shared:

Because of this new app, I now feel that God is much, much more present in my everyday life.

You may have also noticed that we introduced a new mobile and desktop app specifically for the 2022 SRF World Convocation that allowed many thousands of seekers, participating from more than 135 countries, to join together for this immersive week in one dedicated digital space. Among other things, this special app brought together monastics and attendees in online fellowship events to share the joy of Convocation in each other’s divine company.

There are other ways we are working to increase access to seekers worldwide:

  • Providing subtitles in multiple languages for our weekly online inspirational services. This series of talks by SRF monastics is proving to be popular with both members and those just discovering the spiritual path.
  • Releasing Paramahansaji’s inspired talks and writings as ebooks in several languages.
  • Publishing more audiobooks of the Guru’s works ― and launching a podcast which will make more of our inspirational content accessible in audio-only format, something many have requested.

It is because of your ongoing generosity that we are able to cover the significant expenses associated with building, hosting, maintaining, and developing these resources. In the coming year ― with your continued support ― we look forward to making greater strides with all our digital offerings to serve our spiritually awakening world.

Meeting the Growing Interest in Volunteering

Thousands of SRF members and friends have signed up to serve Paramahansa Yogananda’s work on the SRF/YSS Volunteer Portal since its launch in 2020. Many now serve in key areas — providing assistance through the International Help Desk, ushering and leading group meditations at the SRF Online Meditation Center, working on translations for different media, and much more.

We recently received this touching note from an SRF member who is volunteering from Calgary, Canada:

I had no idea what my sadhana was missing, until I personally experienced the power of spiritual company. Regularly meeting and serving with other devotees who share in the same love for our Guru has changed my life and has helped me become a better devotee.

Your contribution will help us expand the staff and resources needed to identify and train volunteers for vital roles across the organization and to benefit from their unique professional expertise no matter where they live in the world.

You can also help us build a more dynamic volunteer portal that allows those who want to volunteer — whether long-time members or those who are new to our Guru’s teachings — to more easily find opportunities that are well suited to their talents and interests.

Expanding Programs for Children and Families Worldwide

Mom daugther Dos Frogs

Programs for educating youth in the highest spiritual ideals, with the aim of helping them live truly happy, healthy, and productive lives, have been a part of our Guru’s mission since the founding of his first school in Dihika, India, more than a hundred years ago. When he came to the West to bring the Kriya Yoga science to all, he was also aware of the great need for his practical “how-to-live” education for youth to be shared as widely as possible — and we are very happy to continue working toward that cherished goal with you.

Building on the rich, in-person offerings developed for SRF Youth Programs over many decades, during the past 18 months, our Youth Services department has laid a strong foundation on which to build a wide array of online resources for SRF youth to gain a practical understanding of balanced spiritual living. We completed two pilot programs for online “how-to-live” classes for children and teens, consisting of almost 200 sessions. Additionally, in July we conducted a 6-day, online, “How-to-Live” Summer Program, which totaled 60 classes and served 200 youths ranging in age from 7 through 17.

This was all made possible by your continued generosity, which allowed us to program a smooth registration process with user-friendly digital spaces to house the teaching content and train teachers to conduct classes in an online environment. More than 150 teachers and 50 support staff members were involved in these recent programs. And we’re just getting started.

In 2023, we plan on expanding the “how-to-live” youth classes to be held weekly throughout the year, eventually serving children and teens in many different countries. Our plan includes enhanced teacher training programs and the development of a more robust set of materials for parents, teens, and children.

One child who attended an online “how-to-live” class shared:

I had a lot of fun during the youth program. I learned about being fearless and different affirmations about fearlessness. I use the fearlessness affirmations that I learned whenever I am scared or nervous and it always makes me feel better.

Sports Media Podcast: What a 2026 World Cup in North America means for Fox Sports

MOSCOW, RUSSIA - JUNE 13: FIFA president Gianni Infantino (r) poses with the United 2026 bid (Canada, Mexico, US) officials: Left-Right Sunil Gulati president of the United States Soccer Federation, CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani, president of the Mexican Football Association Decio de Maria Serrano, president of the United States Football Association Carlos Cordeiro and Steve Reed president of the Canadian Soccer Association after the announcement of the host for the 2026 FIFA World Cup went to United 2026 bid during the 68th FIFA Congress at Moscow's Expocentre on June 13, 2018 in Moscow, Russia. The successful three-nation bid to bring the 2026 World Cup to North America — the first time the global sporting event will be held in that region since 1994 — is obviously a coup for those involved in soccer in the United States, Canada and Mexico. But the biggest winner of all could be Fox Sports and Telemundo, the two U.S. media rights holders.

In Feb. 2015, FIFA quietly announced it had extended U.S. media rights agreements with Fox and NBC’s Universal’s Telemundo through the 2026 World Cup. It stunned veteran soccer watchers and Fox competitors. An ESPN source said the network was unaware of any negotiations for FIFA media rights in the U.S.

Granting Fox and Telemundo an extra round without opening up the bidding has been speculated as a make good for the prospect of the 2022 Qatar World Cup moving its time of year of the tournament because Fox and Telemundo could have sued FIFA for changing the dates. As per this 2015 New York Times story on the rights extension, an executive made aware of the terms of the contract said Fox paid about 10 percent more than in its current contracts for 2018 and 2022, which are worth a total of $425 million. Even if Fox is contractually obligated to give FIFA some money for North America winning the bid, a domestic World Cup will be a boon for the media rights-holders.

In Episode 10 of the Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch, Sports Business Daily media reporter John Ourand and Boston Globe sports media reporter Chad Finn discuss what the 2026 World Cup means for Fox Sports.

“We have spilled a lot of ink talking about the lack of a U.S. team in Russia is really going to hurt Fox, and how they are going to lose a ton of money, but every executive I spoke with at Fox said just wait before you declare this as awful because they got a below market value for the 2026 World Cup,” Ourand said. “Now it is going to be a domestic World Cup, and that is going to print money for them. This deal is by any measure just a great deal for Fox Sports, one of the all-time sports media deals in my opinion.”

https://art19.com/shows/sports-media-with-richard-deitsch

Ourand and Finn also discussed the perception of Fox Sports when it comes to its golf and global soccer coverage; Comcast’s attempt to buyy the assets owned by 21st Century Fox and what that would mean for two dozen regional sports networks owned by Fox Sports; the 2018 NBA Finals viewership; what the NBA offseason means for interest in the sport among rights-holders; whether LeBron James will head to Boston, and much more.

The second half of the podcast is a one-on-one conversation with Washington Post Capitals reporter Isabelle Khurshudyan. That conversation includes Khurshudyan discussing a number of topics including covering a Stanley Cup champion; why the Caps celebration has gone national; how much being fluent in Russian has helped her covering the NHL; whether it was intimidating to join the Post as an intern; how she procured an assignment to work in in the Moscow Bureau of the Washington Post, and the Washington Post having six women (Candace Buckner, Liz Clarke, Chelsea Janes, Khurshudyan, Kimberley A. Martin and Ava Wallace)  leading beats in sports.

“Obviously I think it is awesome but I hope first and foremost people think we are good reporters and I hope that is what makes our coverage standout,” Khurshudyan said.  It is good to have diversity whether its race, gender background, whatever because you see the world differently.”

PODCAST BREAKDOWN

A "very complex" case: The events that led to an arrest in the Idaho student slayings

The killings of four University of Idaho students in mid-November at an off-campus residence stunned the small community of Moscow, where investigators grappled with what the town's police chief would later describe as a "very complex" case.

No suspect was immediately named in the deaths of housemates Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Xana Kernodle, 20, as well as Kernodle's boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20. Nor was a murder weapon, believed to be a large fixed-blade knife, found.

But the intense scrutiny on the unsolved slayings sparked thousands of tips to the FBI.

Then, nearly seven weeks later — with the community on edge and speculation swirling about who could commit such violence — police announced an arrest in Pennsylvania of a doctoral student in criminal justice .

"This is not the end of this investigation," Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson said at a news conference announcing the arrest in late December. "In fact, this is a new beginning."

Here's a timeline of key moments in the case.

Nov. 12, 2022

Starting at around 9 p.m., Kernodle and Chapin are seen at a party at Chapin's fraternity, Sigma Chi, a short walk from the King Road apartment house where the roommates lived, according to investigators.

That night, Goncalves uploads pictures to her Instagram account featuring photos of the friends with the caption, "One lucky girl to be surrounded by these pple everyday."

At about 10 p.m., Goncalves and Mogen go to a sports bar in Moscow, the Corner Club.

Nov. 13, 2022

At about 1:30 a.m., Goncalves and Mogen are seen ordering from a nearby food truck , according to the truck's livestream.

Investigators say Kernodle and Chapin return to their three-level house on King Road at about 1:45 a.m., while Goncalves and Mogen take a car ride home, arriving at about 1:56 a.m.

Meanwhile, two other housemates who had gone out that night had arrived home before the others, at about 1 a.m., Moscow police say.

At 11:58 a.m., a 911 call is placed on the cellphone of one of the other housemates requesting assistance for an "unconscious person." (Both housemates were unharmed.)

Police alert the public about the deaths in a news release and while they say no one is in custody, they do "not believe there is an ongoing community risk based on information gathered during the preliminary investigation."

Nov. 16, 2022

With no suspect apprehended, Moscow police walk back  previous comments that there was no threat to the largely rural city of almost 26,000 residents.

"We do not have a suspect at this time, and that individual is still out there," Moscow Police Chief James Fry says at a news conference. He adds that the more than 25 investigators with the Idaho State Police and the FBI are assisting in the case.

Nov. 17, 2022

Preliminary autopsy results show that the four victims were likely attacked with a large knife and died sometime after 2 a.m. from multiple stab wounds, Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt says .

She describes their wounds as "pretty extensive."

Nov. 18, 2022

Police say the victims were most likely asleep when they were slain, and some of them had defensive wounds. There was also no sign of sexual assault.

Meanwhile, detectives seize the contents of three dumpsters near the home to search for possible evidence, and they contact local businesses to determine if a knife had recently been purchased.

Nov. 30, 2022

A vigil is held at the University of Idaho in honor of the victims, with some family members in attendance.

"We're going to get our justice," Steven Goncalves, Kaylee's father, says, adding that his daughter and Mogen had been best friends since the sixth grade and he had learned that they were in the same bed when they were killed.

"They went to high school together, then they started looking at colleges, they came here together. They eventually get into the same apartment together," he said. "And in the end, they died together."

Dec. 1, 2022

Moscow police reaffirm the quadruple homicide was part of a "targeted attack," after authorities appeared to suggest the opposite.

"We remain consistent in our belief that this was indeed a targeted attack but have not concluded if the target was the residence or its occupants," a police spokesperson says.

The department also continues to dispel online rumors and speculation , and says it has cleared certain people seen interacting with Goncalves and Mogen on the evening they were killed. Police also say the two housemates who were home during the attack had been sleeping that night.

Dec. 2, 2022

The two housemates, Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen, release letters saying they are struggling to accept why the lives of "four beautiful people" were taken so brutally.

Dec. 5, 2022

Detectives focus on Chapin's and Kernodle's activities on the evening they were killed, and ask the public for information about the nearly five hours from when the couple arrived at the Sigma Chi party to the apartment house on King Road.

Dec. 6, 2022

Police say they recognize how frustrating the lack of news can be for the families and the public, but insist they do not want to jeopardize the case.

"We are at that point in the investigation where we're still gathering information, we're still gathering tips, we're still gathering evidence, we're still doing everything we need to do," Fry says in a  video  posted online.

Dec. 7, 2022

Police begin removing personal items of the victims from the apartment house and returning them to their families.

They also announce what appears to be an integral part of the investigation: They say they are looking to speak with any occupants of a white Hyundai Elantra from 2011-13 with unknown license plates. They do not say whether they believe the driver is linked to the killer but say that person may have "critical information" to share.

Dec. 15, 2022

Kristi Goncalves, Kaylee's mother, expresses frustration during an interview with NBC's "TODAY" show that she only learned about the police interest in the Hyundai Elentra when the rest of the public did — underscoring how some victims' families feel "left in the dark."

Dec. 21, 2022

Fry tells NBC News that his department is in daily contact with families and "we asked them to be patient" as the investigation progresses. The police chief again insists the investigation is not a cold case, and "our end goal is to bring somebody to justice for those families and for those victims."

Dec. 30, 2022

Police announce an arrest of a suspect: Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, a resident of Pullman, Washington, then a doctoral student at Washington State University. He is apprehended  in northeastern Pennsylvania , about 2,500 miles from the Idaho campus, and charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary.

According to two law enforcement sources, DNA evidence played a key role in linking the killings to Kohberger.

At a news conference, Fry says he believes Kohberger is the only suspect.

"What I can tell you is that we have an individual in custody who committed these horrible crimes," he says, "and I do believe our community is safe."

Dec. 31, 2022

The public defender of Monroe County, Pennsylvania, where Kohberger is being held, says the suspect intends to waive his extradition hearing to face charges in Idaho.

"He should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise — not tried in the court of public opinion," Jason LaBar says in a statement, adding, "Mr. Kohberger is eager to be exonerated of these charges and looks forward to resolving these matters as promptly as possible."

Kohberger appears in court and agrees to return to Idaho.

Jan. 4, 2023

Kohberger is flown across country in a Pennsylvania State Police plane and booked into the Latah County, Idaho, jail.

Jan. 5, 2023

Kohberger makes his first appearance in an Idaho court and is ordered held without bail. Another pretrial hearing is set for Jan. 12.

Investigators say male DNA discovered on a knife sheath was used to link Kohberger to the crime scene and that they had been tracking his car, a white Hyundai Elantra, and cellphone use in the area, according to newly released court documents.

Jan. 18, 2023

A list of items seized from a search warrant for Kohberger's Pullman, Washington, apartment is made public. The belongings include a pillow with a "reddish/brown stain," a disposable glove and at least a dozen strands of hair.

Feb. 28, 2023

A search warrant for the home of Kohberger's parents in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, reveals more items seized, including four medical-style gloves, a silver flashlight and a buccal swab DNA test.

March 13, 2023

Prosecutors seek data from major tech firms , such as Apple and Amazon, as well as social media platforms and retailers as part of their investigation, according to court documents made public. They also request bank and social media information tied to the four victims in order to build a digital picture of the crime and the suspect.

April 21, 2023

Funke, one of the surviving housemates, files a motion to quash a subpoena that would require her to testify at Kohberger's preliminary hearing in June. While an investigator for his defense said in an affidavit that she knows information that would be "exculpatory to the defendant," Funke in her motion said the statement is "without support and there is no further information or detail pertaining to the substance of this testimony, its materiality or the alleged exculpatory information."

April 26, 2023

Funke agrees to interview with the defense counsel, according to a court filing, but she won't have to travel to Idaho.

May 4, 2023

Newly released police bodycam video shows Kohberger being pulled over for allegedly running a red light in Pullman, Washington, in October 2022, about a month before the slayings in Moscow. Washington State University campus police let him go with a warning.

May 16, 2023

A Latah County grand jury returns an indictment against Kohberger on the murder charges, paving the way for an arraignment and trial.

May 22, 2023

Kohberger during his arraignment stands silent when asked to enter a plea, prompting Latah County District Judge John Judge to enter not guilty pleas on his behalf on the murder and burglary charges. A trial is tentatively set for Oct. 2.

In addition, prosecutors have 60 days to give notice if they'll seek the death penalty.

June 16, 2023

DNA on the knife sheath found at the off-campus home directly links Kohberger to the crime scene, according to court documents filed by prosecutors .

June 22, 2023

Kohberger's attorney says in a court filing that there is "no connection" between him and the slain students and that other men's DNA was also found at the scene.

His attorney also claims that police investigated "various possible suspects," many of whom provided DNA — including at least one who allegedly "had his DNA surreptitiously taken from a discarded cigarette" and others who "had their phones taken and downloaded," the filing says.

June 26, 2023

Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against Kohberger if he is convicted, writing in a court filing that "aggravating circumstances" in the "especially heinous" killings led to the decision.

Idaho has not carried out an execution since 2012.

July 4, 2023

Some families of the victims speak out against the University of Idaho's plan to demolish the King Road residence before the start of the fall semester on Aug. 21.

"The home itself has enormous evidentiary value as well as being the largest, and one of the most important, pieces of evidence in the case," an attorney for the Goncalves family tells the Idaho Statesman . But the school responds that neither the prosecution nor the defense is objecting to the demolition.

July 12, 2023

Reversing course, the University of Idaho says it will halt tearing down the King Road.

"We know that every action and decision around this horrific incident is painful and invokes emotions," university President Scott Green says in a statement. "That is why every decision we have made this far is with the families of the victims and our students in mind."

July 25, 2023

Kohberger's lawyers filed a motion seeking to get his indictment dismissed , arguing that the grand jury was "misled as to the standard of proof required for an indictment." They say the standard should be "beyond a reasonable doubt," but claim the grand jury was "erroneously instructed" with "presentment," which they say would mean having a "reasonable ground for believing the defendant has committed" an alleged offense.

Aug. 23, 2023

Kohberger  waives his right to a speedy trial  during an appearance in Latah County Court, where his legal team says it may not be ready by the October start date. A new date has not been immediately decided.

His lawyers also say they will file a motion to strike the death penalty and file another motion seeking to ban cameras in the courtroom.

Oct. 31, 2023

Federal investigators return to the Kind Road home to gather more evidence and create a replica of the residence that can be used at trial.

Nov. 13, 2023

The University of Idaho marks one year since the slayings with a vigil in the victims' honor.

Dec. 14, 2023

Kohberger's defense team is permitted inside the King Road home to gather documentation it needs before trial.

Dec. 15, 2023

A Latah County district court denies the defense team's request to dismiss the indictment against Kohbeger on various reasons.

"Kohberger has failed to successfully challenge the indictment on grounds of juror bias, lack of sufficient admissible evidence, or prosecutorial misconduct," Judge John Judge writes. "Kohberger was indicted by an impartial grand jury who had sufficient admissible evidence to find probable cause to believe Kohberger committed the crimes alleged by the state." Details of the ruling itself remain sealed.

Dec. 21, 2023

Latah County prosecutors file a request for Kohberger's trial to be held in summer 2024.

Dec. 28, 2023

The King Road house is demolished despite objections from two of the victims' families who say it should remain standing for trial in the event it would help understand what happened. But Latah County prosecutors tell the University of Idaho in an email from Dec. 22 that "the current condition of the premises is so substantially different than at the time of the homicides that a jury view would not be authorized."

The Goncalves and Kernodle families release a statement voicing their frustration after a judge at a hearing suggests the murder trial likely won't begin until 2025.

Kohberger's lawyers file an updated alibi defense saying that cellphone tower data will show he liked to take late-night drives along the Washington-Idaho border, but was miles away when the victims were killed. They said they intend to rely on testimony at trial from cell tower data expert Sy Ray .

Moscow, Idaho, is home to the University of Idaho. On Saturday, November 12, 2022, students were decked out in game day gear, ready to cheer on the school’s football team, the Vandals.

Noisy parties followed, until a hush settled on student housing around 3:00 or 4:00 a.m.

But that hush would not stay for long. By the next day, November 13, 2022, the news would be everywhere. Four students had been murdered in their home just blocks from campus.

21-year-old Madison Mogen, a senior from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Her best friend, Kaylee Goncalves, also 21, from Rathdrum, Idaho.

Ethan Chapin, a 20-year-old freshman from Conway, Washington.

And Ethan's girlfriend, 20-year-old junior Xana Kernodle of Avondale, Arizona.

Incredibly, two roommates survived: Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortenson. For reasons that are unclear, they were not hurt.

That night, students received multiple updates from the university, but none of them eased any minds, or made anyone feel safer.

Moscow Police were working the crime scene, but were saying not a word about what they'd found inside.

Not saying a word about who might have done it.

And saying little about what had happened...

The latest on the Idaho student killings investigation

By Aditi Sangal , Adrienne Vogt , Matt Meyer and Melissa Macaya, CNN

What we learned today in the Idaho students murder case — and what we still don't know

From CNN staff

Friday brought the most significant news yet in the closely-watched case of four college students who were killed in Moscow, Idaho, in November.

While authorities have now arrested a suspect, many key questions about the events surrounding the killings remain unanswered.

What we learned today:

  • A suspect in the killings is now in custody: The man arrested is Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, according to a criminal complaint. He was taken into custody Friday in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, the document states.
  • The evidence used by investigators: Authorities narrowed their focus to Kohberger after tracing his ownership of a  white Hyundai Elantra  seen in the area of the killings, according to two law enforcement sources. They also said his DNA was matched to genetic material recovered at the off-campus house where the students were stabbed to death. Investigators traced the DNA with the help of genetic genealogy, a source with knowledge of the case told CNN.
  • Kohberger was a graduate student at a nearby school: The suspect does not attend the same college as the victims, but just finished his first semester in a PhD program for Washington State University’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, the school confirmed.
  • What's next for the suspect: Records show Kohberger was arraigned Friday morning in Pennsylvania and has a court hearing on extradition to Idaho on Jan. 3. He could also waive extradition and return voluntarily. Once he is in Idaho, he is expected to make an initial appearance before a magistrate and further hearings will be scheduled.
  • Investigators still need help: “This is not the end of this investigation. In fact, this is a new beginning,” Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said during tonight's news conference. Authorities urged anyone with information about the named suspect to come forward and help them fill in the events surrounding the killings.

What we still don't know:

  • The suspect's potential motive or connection to the victims : Moscow Police Chief James Fry said the suspect's motive in the attack is still part of the investigation and would not publicly say whether the suspect knew the victims.
  • The weapon used in the attack: Authorities have previously said an “edged weapon such as a knife” was used in the killings, but no murder weapon has been found, Fry said Friday.
  • Whether a specific tip led to the arrest: The police chief thanked residents for the overwhelming number of tips that poured in for the case, but did not specify when asked whether a specific piece of information led to Friday's arrest.
  • How the attack played out: While police have previously outlined limited details about the killings , including that the victims had likely been sleeping and that two additional roommates were unharmed, investigators went no further Friday to establish the narrative of that night's events.

More context: State law limits what information authorities can release before Kohberger makes an initial appearance in Idaho court, Fry told reporters, and that could have to do with the lack of further details. The police chief thanked the public for its patience and acknowledged frustrations with the pace of updates on the case.

School confirms that Idaho killings suspect is a PhD student at Washington State University

Washington State University confirmed that the suspect in the case of four murdered Idaho college students , Bryan Kohberger, attends the school as a graduate student.

In a statement released Friday, a school spokesperson said Kohberger completed his first semester as a PhD student in the school's criminal justice program earlier this month.

University officials also confirmed that the college's police department helped Idaho law enforcement search Kohberger's apartment and office, which are both located on the school's Pullman campus.

CNN had previously reported Kohberger's attendance based on a since-removed school directory.

“On behalf of the WSU Pullman community, I want to offer my sincere thanks to all of the law enforcement agencies that have been working tirelessly to solve this crime,” said Elizabeth Chilton, chancellor of the WSU Pullman campus, in the statement. “This horrific act has shaken everyone in the Palouse region.”

“We also want to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and Vandal colleagues who were impacted by these murders,” Chilton said. “We will long feel the loss of these young people in the Moscow-Pullman community and hope the announcement today will be a step toward healing.”

Cleanup at the house where Idaho students were killed has been halted by a legal request

From CNN's Elizabeth Joseph

A view from the back of the house where police found four University of Idaho students stabbed to death on November 13.

A court request has halted the cleanup process at the home where four college students were killed last month, the Moscow, Idaho, police chief said Friday.

On Thursday, Moscow police said a private company would begin "remediation activities" the next morning, and that the 1122 King Street residence would remain an active crime scene under police authority.

But “the house cleanup has been halted, and that came by a legal request from the court,” chief James Fry told reporters Friday.

Remediation activities include removing potential biohazards and other harmful substances used to collect evidence, Moscow police explained in a news release earlier this week.

"There is no timeline for completion, but the property will be returned to the property management company when finished,” the department said at the time.

Fry did not offer further details about why the cleanup has been halted.

Here's what comes next for the suspect, according to officials

Bryan Kohberger, the suspect arrested Friday in connection with the Idaho student killings, had an initial appearance in front of a judge in Pennsylvania and is being held without bond, Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said during tonight's news conference.

“And the warrant from our magistrate judge here also provides for no bond. We understand that he’s scheduled to be back in court in Pennsylvania next Tuesday afternoon and that a public defender has been appointed for him there,” Thompson said.

Once Kohberger is in Idaho, he is expected to make an initial appearance before a magistrate and further hearings will be scheduled.

“This is not the end of this investigation. In fact, this is a new beginning,” Thompson said.

Because Kohberger was arrested in Pennsylvania, he has the opportunity either waive extradition and return to Idaho voluntarily. If he chooses not to return voluntarily, Moscow police will initiate extradition proceedings through the governor’s office, Moscow Police Department Chief James Fry said during the news conference.

“If we do that, it can take a while for him to get here,” he said.

Records show Kohberger was arraigned Friday morning in Pennsylvania and he has a court hearing on extradition Jan. 3.

Moscow resident reacts with relief to arrest in Idaho student murders case

From CNN’s Veronica Miracle

Moscow, Idaho, resident Erin Staheli became emotional while expressing her relief at the news of an arrest in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students.

“It's just been very scary not knowing who's out there,” Staheli told CNN, noting the fear that has permeated the Moscow community for weeks. “I had doubts that the killer would be caught because it's been so long, you know.”

Staheli praised the work of the police agencies and FBI for the arrest.

“I knew that they would, but it's just taking so long and I'm so happy for their families and everybody that's been worried that all the students, everybody that may not have come back to school,” she said.

Police chief says investigators are still searching for a murder weapon and doesn’t share potential motive

Moscow, Idaho, Police Chief James Fry said that investigators are still actively searching for pieces of evidence in the case, including the weapon used to kill the four college students.

Fry also said the suspect's motive in the attack is still part of the investigation and would not publicly say whether suspect Bryan Kohberger knew the victims.

"That's part of the investigation as well; it won't be something that will come out at this point in time," Fry said. "But as we continue the investigation, and as this case goes to trial, that will be brought forth."

The police chief also did not specify whether a specific tip led to Friday's arrest, which occurred in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania.

“All I know is that he lives in in Pennsylvania,” Fry told a reporter when asked about Kohberger’s connection to Pennsylvania. He declined to provide any other detail.

State law limits what information authorities can release before Kohberger makes an initial appearance in Idaho court, Fry told reporters.

University of Idaho president says school will carry on legacy of students who were killed

University of Idaho President Scott Green speaks at the news conference for the case of four murdered University of Idaho students in Moscow, Idaho on Friday.

University of Idaho President Scott Green said he was thankful for both local and national support for the investigation into four slain students.

"While we cannot bring back Maddie, Kaylee and Xana and Ethan, we could carry their legacy in the work that we do. Our students come first and that was proven each and every day of this investigation," he said.

Green expressed gratitude for law enforcement in providing security to the school.

"We never lost faith that this case could be solved and are grateful for the hard work of the Moscow Police Department and their law enforcement partners," he said.

County prosecutor calls on public to report anything they might know about the suspect

Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson speaks at the news conference for the case of four murdered University of Idaho students in Moscow, Idaho on Friday.

Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson told members of the public that investigators are not done building their case against the suspect in the Idaho students' murder , and that officials still need help gathering more information.

"You will now know the name of the person who's been charged with these offenses," he continued, referring to the suspect identified by authorities, 28-year-old Bryan Kohberger .

"Please get that information out there. Please ask the public, anyone who knows about this individual, to come forward, call the tip line, report anything you know about him to help the investigators and eventually our office and the court system understand fully everything there is to know about not only the individual, but what happened, and why," he said.

County prosecutor says criminal complaint charging suspect was filed Thursday

Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson said a criminal complaint was filed yesterday charging suspect Bryan Kohberger with four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary.

"There's a pending case now in court and I and any office and the investigators have to live with the restrictions that our Supreme Court places on pretrial publicity. That said, I promise you we will share with you, through the court process or otherwise, whatever we are allowed to. I just appreciate your patience on that," he said in a press conference.

Thompson said factual basis for the charges are summarized in a probable cause affidavit, which is on file with the court.

"According to the rules of the Idaho Supreme Court, that is sealed until Mr. Kohberger is physically back in Latah County and is physically served with the arrest warrant. At that time, we expect that that affidavit will be available to you so you could share the true facts with all of your readers and your watchers and your listeners and all of the people," he said, addressing reporters in the room.

"It's sad to be here but happy to here at the same time," he added.

Kohberger had an initial appearance in front of a judge in Pennsylvania and is being held without bond, Thompson said.

“And the warrant from our magistrate judge here also provides for no bond. We understand that he’s scheduled to be back in court in Pennsylvania next Tuesday afternoon and that a public defender has been appointed for him there,” he said.
