write a essay about market place

A market place is a very busy place where people go to buy articles of their needs. It is a centre of attraction for both buyers and sellers. There is no other place in the area having so much brisk business as the market.

I always find a big crowd there. There are several shops, all decorated beautifully. Big shops look more attractive. Businessmen come here from far and wide for purchasing or selling their products. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, vegetables, etc.

Whenever I visit a market I find the hawkers shouting loudly to sell their goods. They try to attract the people by several names. Generally they sing songs in praise of their goods. They face hard competition because there are several hawkers selling the same article.

As the prices of the items are not fixed, the hawkers as well as the buyers do bargain. I watch these people who feel greatly satisfied after purchasing a thing at a minimum price from the hawkers.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The market is at peak in the evening. There is not a single shop where a big crowd is not seen. Everyone seems to be in hurry. There are jewellery shops which shine brightly in the light. Cloth shops and ready-made garment shops do great business during a festival.

The hotels and restaurants are also crowded with people. Some people are seen with plates of ‘chat’ others are seen enjoying cold drinks. There is flavour of all kinds in the surrounding area. It is very difficult to drive a car in a market place.

What to talk of a car or a motorcycle sometimes it becomes difficult even to walk. On the occasion of festivals like Diwali, Dussehra and Holi the situation becomes worse. It seems all the population of the country is on the road. There is great hustle and bustle. In between the cars and motorcycles, we see those carrying different articles for sale. They create great problems as sometimes they bring the traffic at a halt resulting in loud horns from the car-drivers.

The market is really a very noisy place. One can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another and enjoy fast foods. Some people are seen discussing politics in the light of their business.

Our markets are quite different from the markets of the western advanced countries. Our markets present a rural glimpse and fill us with a feeling that we belong to India whose soul lies in villages. It is really very pleasant to move in a market, particularly in the evening.

I always welcome those moments when I visit the market for this purpose or that. It is a place where one can see the life in so many colours. One can get valuable experiences too by visiting market and buying different commodities.

How to Describe a Market in a Story

By A.W. Naves

how to describe a market in a story

Are you writing a chapter set in a busy market? Make it vivid by using the tips below on how to describe a market in a story. We’ve included 10 adjectives that you use.

1. Bustling

Lively, busy ; full of activity and energy.

“The market was bustling with vendors and shoppers, all haggling for the best deals.”

“The bustling market was so infectious that you couldn’t help but get caught up in the excitement.”

How it Adds Description

The word “bustling” suggests that the market is crowded with people, vendors, and goods, all in a constant state of motion. It can create a feeling of chaos or suspense as the characters navigate through the crowds to reach their destination or it can serve as a backdrop for an important event or conversation between characters.

2. Colorful

Vibrant, vivid ; full of bright colors and hues.

“The market was a riot of color , with vendors selling fruits and vegetables in every shade.”

“The colorful displays of merchandise and goods were a feast for the eyes.”

The word “colorful” implies that the market is full of different types of people, goods, and experiences. It suggests that the market could be home to unsavory characters or illegal activities that foreshadow a pivotal scene in the story where a character faces a challenge or obstacle that must be overcome.

3. Traditional

Classic, old-fashioned ; keeping with long-established customs or practices.

“The market was filled with traditional crafts and goods, made by skilled artisans using age-old techniques.”

“The traditional foods on offer at the market were a throwback to an earlier time.”

The word “traditional” suggests that the market has been established for a long time and adheres to customary or historical practices. It implies a sense of familiarity, consistency, and reliability, and may connote a slower pace of change or resistance to innovation. It may emphasize a sense of nostalgia or loss if the market is being threatened by outside forces or changing times.

Loud, raucous ; full of shrill sounds and commotion.

“The market was noisy with the sounds of vendors shouting and people bargaining for deals.”

“The noisy market could sometimes be an assault on the senses.”

The word “noisy” insinuates that shoppers are talking loudly, vendors are calling out to potential customers, and various sounds of merchandise being sold can be heard. It can create a sense of tension or chaos in the scene or reveal something about the character’s personality or perspective, such as if they find the noise overwhelming or energizing.

Unusual, unfamiliar ; not of native origin.

“The market was filled with exotic spices and fruits from far-off lands.”

“The exotic textiles and fabrics on display were unlike anything I had ever seen before.”

The word “exotic” suggests that the items being sold there are unusual. This can create a sense of intrigue and interest in the market, as well as imply that the characters in the story may be exposed to new and exciting experiences. The market might also be used as a source of valuable items or information that the characters need to progress in a quest or to solve a mystery.

6. Aromatic

Fragrant, perfumed ; full of pleasant smells.

“The spices and herbs at the market were aromatic , wafting through the air and tantalizing the senses.”

“The aromatic odor of freshly baked bread filled the market, drawing in buyers with its delicious scent.”

The word “aromatic” is often used to describe the pleasant, distinctive smell of certain foods, spices, and herbs. It creates a sensory experience for the reader, allowing them to imagine the scents and flavors of the various products being sold. This can help to create a sense of atmosphere and set the scene for the action that is to come.

7. Multicultural

Diverse, varied ; reflecting different cultures and ethnicities.

“The market was a multicultural hub of activity, with vendors and shoppers from all over the world.”

“The multicultural atmosphere of the market was a celebration of diversity and inclusivity.”

The word “multicultural” indicates that the market in the story is diverse and includes people from many different backgrounds. This can lead to interesting encounters, conflicts, or collaborations between those who visit the market. It may also suggest that the story will touch on themes of cultural identity, diversity, and inclusivity.

Loud, thunderous ; full of busy sounds.

“The market was a noisy cacophony of sounds with shoppers haggling and chatting.”

“The noisy atmosphere of the market was a reflection of its lively and bustling character.”

The word “noisy” conveys a sense of chaos, commotion, and activity. It can be used to show a character who is trying to navigate through a crowded market to reach a specific stall, or trying to eavesdrop on a conversation to gather information with the noise and activity making it more difficult for them to find their way. This can add depth and texture to the story.

9. Eclectic

Diverse, varied ; combining elements from a variety of sources.

“The market was an eclectic mix of goods from around the world, with vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to exotic spices.”

“The eclectic atmosphere of the market was a testament to its diversity and inclusivity.”

The word “eclectic” describes a market that is composed of a diverse range of items, styles, or sources. It suggests that the market is not just a typical place to buy goods, creating opportunities for the plot to develop in unexpected ways, such as the character discovering an important clue, meeting a key character, or encountering a major obstacle.

10. Organic

Natural, unprocessed ; grown or produced without synthetic chemicals.

“The market was a haven for organic produce, with farmers selling fresh fruits and vegetables grown without pesticides or other chemicals.”

“The organic market was a welcome break from the processed and packaged foods found in most grocery stores.”

The word “organic” suggests that the products sold at a market are natural and wholesome. It conveys themes of health, sustainability, and consumerism in a story. A character seeking healthy food options or trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle might be drawn to the organic market as a source of high-quality, environmentally friendly products.

The market itself is in the centre of the town. All important bazaars of the town lead to this market. It has square shape. There is an open ground in the middle of the shops. There are shops on the four sides of the big square. The main shopkeepers are regents. Their trade is chiefly export and import of grains. They transact business. The market is always crowded with carts, horses, donkeys and camels. They come loaded with the produce of the season such as cotton, grain, oil seeds, gur and vegetables. These things are arranged in an attractive manner for sale.

The merchants make  their purchases moving in groups. They bid in  a particular fashion. They do some indications udder the clothes to fix the rates of the commodities brought in the market for sale. The purchase of commodities  take place in the day. In the evening all commodities are packed in jute bags. They are sent back to places where they are in demand. The country carts, horses and donkeys go back with their masters to the villages. Nearly all the shops have telephones. The shopkeepers get news about the rates of markets through post and telephone.

The market of my town is a very noisy place. Pretty hawkers with namkins of various kinds go about the market. They sell their articles by shouting their names at the top of their voice. Once can meet all sorts of people there. There is joy and laughter on all sides. Friends welcome one another. People discuss politics in the light of their business.

The market of my town is different from old markets. It is not dirty. It is swept and cleaned every day. There is no mud and bad smell. In the centre of the market there is a well. A trough is made near it. The animals drinks water at the trough. There is public bath for the labourers. In short our town market is worth a visit.

Essay No. 2

A market is a place where we buy vegetables, fruits, fish, fowls and meat. It is the biggest concentration of noise every morning. It is filled with a crows of mainly buyers.

The central market in Kuala Lumpur is not only a landmark  but is also one of the best attractions in the city. It is really an experience to go round the stalls during their busy hours. Business at the Central Market starts in the early hours of the day. Vans and Lorries bring loads of fish and meat to the vendors. Usually nonperishable things are brought overnight. But green vegetables are brought early in the morning. The smooth and efficient working of the market is really appreciable.

This market is in a huge concrete building. The stalls are arranged in beautiful rows, they are also classified according to the goods they deal with. Fruits, vegetables, fish, fowls and meat; all have their respective dealers. Buyers and sellers haggle and haggle over prices. They push and jostle to get the best offer.

The market is under city authorities. So health inspectors are responsible for its cleanliness. They have to see that the foodstuffs that are sold are free from defects. Thus unscrupulous stall keepers and vendors are warned against selling rotten, unpalatable or poisonous food stuff.

Essay No. 3

Market Scene Essay 400 + Words

Introduction

The market scene in my town is quite a busy one. There are a lot of people and a lot of noise. The market has a lot of small shops which sell everything from vegetables to clothes. The market is always full of people, and it can be quite difficult to find what you’re looking for. However, the market is also a great place to find bargains. If you’re looking for a specific item, it’s best to ask around. Chances are, someone in the market will know where to find it. The market scene in my town is quite busy, but it’s also a great place to find bargains on things you need.

The Market Scene

The market scene is always busy, reflecting the market demand and bustling with people. There are stalls of all sorts, selling everything from fresh produce to clothes and trinkets. The atmosphere is one of excitement and hustle and bustle, as people bargain and haggle over prices. During all this activity, it can be easy to forget that the market is also a place where people come to socialize. Friends and neighbors catch up with each other while they shop, sharing news and gossip. The market is a lively place where the community comes together.

The Bargaining Process

When two people trade goods or services, they engage in what is called a bargain. The bargaining process is how they come to an agreement on the price and terms of the trade. In a simple bargain, each person has something that the other wants and they agree on a price. For example, when you buy a cup of coffee from a café, both you and the café owner want something – you want coffee and they want money. You agree on a price (usually the going rate for coffee) and make the trade. Bargaining can be more complex than this, however. For example, when buying a car, there are many factors to consider such as the make and model of the car, its age and condition, how much you can afford to pay, and so on. The bargaining process is how you and the seller come to an agreement on all of these factors.

There are some important things to remember when bargaining:

  • Be clear about what you want before you start bargaining. This will help you stay focused during the process.
  • Try to find out as much as you can about what the other person wants too. This will give you an advantage in negotiations.
  • Don’t be afraid to walk away from a deal if it’s not what you want. There’s always another opportunity around the corner!

The Haggling and the Final Purchase

When you’ve finally found the perfect item at the market, it’s time to haggle for the best price. This can be a daunting task, but with a few tips, you can get the best deal. First, don’t be afraid to haggle. The seller expects it and will most likely start high. Second, know your limits. If you’re not comfortable paying more than a certain amount, be firm and walk away if necessary. Third, have fun with it! Haggling can be a fun game of back-and-forth between buyer and seller. Once you’ve reached an agreement on price, it’s time to make the purchase. Be sure to inspect the item carefully before handing over any money. If you’re satisfied, hand over the agreed upon amount and enjoy your new purchase!

The Different Types of Markets

There are many different types of markets, each with their own unique features. The most common type of market is the spot market, where securities are traded for immediate delivery. This is the market that most people are familiar with, as it is where stocks and bonds are bought and sold. Another type of market is the futures market, where contracts are traded for delivery at a later date. Futures markets are used by investors to hedge against price movements in the underlying asset. For example, if a farmer expects the price of wheat to rise in the future, he may sell a wheat futures contract to lock in a lower price for his crop. The options market is another type of derivatives market, where contracts give the holder the right but not the obligation to buy or sell an asset at a certain price. Options can be used to speculate on the direction of an asset’s price, or to hedge against risk in another part of your portfolio. The last major type of market is the foreign exchange (Forex) market, where currencies are traded against each other. The Forex market is the largest financial market in the world, with a daily turnover of over $5 trillion.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Markets

There are both advantages and disadvantages to markets. On the one hand, markets provide a space for buyers and sellers to come together and exchange goods and services. This can lead to increased efficiency and greater choice for consumers. On the other hand, markets can also be unstable, leading to price fluctuations and shortages of goods. They can also be susceptible to monopolies and oligopolies, which can reduce choice and increase prices.

Effective market management ensures the market scene is always busy and bustling with activity. It’s a great place to people watch and take in the sights and sounds of the city. I love how with effective marketing, the market scene is always changing, with new stalls and vendors popping up all the time. It’s a great place to find fresh produce, unique gifts, and delicious food. Whether you’re looking for a fun day out or just want to grab some quick groceries, the market scene is definitely worth checking out.

Scene at a busy market place

The stillness of the dawn was displaced by the scheduled game of the morning gusts. Pages of newsletters and Kit-Kat wrappers flew around in typhoon-like motions scraping against a banner, which was crucified against a brick- wall using four large black nails, expanded and compressed like a heart, displaying ‘Market Place.’

Looking around all that could be seen was a crowd of people pushing, shoving and shouting. People rushed by, Gathering up items as fast as they could, People often travelled in groups; parents and children or other family members and even friends; They were the ones causing the constant buzz of noises!

The stall owners either served queues of customers or shouted out a range of encouragements to passers-by to attract them with their items. The actions of the stall owners were almost automatic, smiling, picking up the item, packaging, giving it to the customer. The swap between the seller and buyer was extremely quick and hard to follow with the bare eye. The stalls looked on the verge of collapsing due to the weight of all the products.

A girl, dressed in a Mother Fairy costume, abraded the stone floors with her rigid sandals. Refusing to enter the market, she sat down on the frost floors, crossing her legs securely together whilst her mother powerfully yanked her from her shoulder with Stallion force in the direction of the cash machine. She then burst into tears, as she glanced at her ‘magic’ wand; which was seized away by her mother who held it with a firm grip. She then swirled her head, and glanced within the translucent doors of the market opposite of her. To her surprise, the Fairy Queen toy rested against a chair, facing her in the same direction. The girl, oblivious of her mother’s previous lectures about good behavior, stared at the Fairy Queen with mother and daughter affection as she waited for a sign of numbness within her mother’s hands. She broke free, running closer to the divine force which emanated from the Fairy Queen. She hugged her, asking the Fairy Queen whether she could borrow her wand, which pointed diagonally at the ceiling, for a ‘trick’. Automatically presuming the acceptance of the Fairy Queen, she adjusted the wand, pointing it at her mother’s figure in the hope that it will magically cast a freezing spell. Unfortunately, the girl’s spells have failed despite the spirit that summoned within her during the cast of the spell. Her distraught mother then, quite grimly, reclaimed her daughter’s consciousness, with a tight grip and a few sharp words as they slouched towards the fruit-stall.

At the fruit stall, an elderly couple walked from crate to crate, carefully examined every spot on every strawberry and every blemish on every apple. During their rage by outrages and unreasonable prices which were displayed on town cardboard pieces, the man attempted to settle the prices with the stall owner, who was busy serving other customers, ignored the old mans chatter and gave him a smug look. The couple, full of disappointment, looked another way, eager to find a bargain.

Children escaped from the grasp of their parent and ran for freedom. Each child went straight to the toy stalls, desperately wanting sometime new, the joy only lasted a few moments before shattered. Parents worriedly rushed to get their children, apologizing to the stall owner, and then continuing with the bargain hunting!

The sight of a busy market place is just one too see for yourself!

Outside the market, only streamlined cars were parked, with some which waited outside having open roofs as the mild shadowy shine of the sunset subsided. Standing in the shade was a mother and her young boy, both cluttered around in a diameter of shopping bags. The young boy seemed particularly fond of his new spider-man toy, being the only bag he held. He swung its large rectangular box in fast-speed windmill motions – trying to cool his mother with the breeze of the air as they waited in boredom for the taxi.

a crowded market descriptive essay

A crowded market is a bustling and energetic place where vendors and customers come together to exchange goods and services. These markets can be found all over the world, from the grand bazaars of Istanbul to the bustling street markets of Mumbai. In this essay, we will explore the various aspects of a crowded market, including the sights, sounds, and smells, as well as the social and economic interactions that take place. We will also examine the cultural significance of crowded markets and the ways in which they reflect the values and traditions of the communities in which they are located.

The Sights, Sounds, and Smells of a Crowded Market

One of the most striking aspects of a crowded market is the array of sights, sounds, and smells that assail the senses. The bright colors of the vendors’ wares, the chatter of bargaining customers, and the aroma of spices and cooking food all contribute to the vibrant atmosphere of the market . The sights of a crowded market can be mesmerizing, with vendors displaying an array of goods that range from local produce and handcrafted goods, to electronics, and clothing. The sounds of a crowded market are equally captivating, with vendors calling out to customers, the clinking of coins and the haggling of prices. The smells of a crowded market are also rich and diverse, with the aroma of spices, perfumes and cooking food to be found everywhere.

The Social and Economic Interactions of a Crowded Market

Crowded markets are not just a place to buy and sell goods and services, they are also a place where social and economic interactions take place. The market is a place where people from different backgrounds come together to engage in commerce, and in the process, they also engage in social interactions. The market is a place where people from different social classes come together, and this can lead to a melting pot of cultures and customs. The market is also an important economic institution, providing a platform for small businesses and entrepreneurs to sell their goods and services. It is a place where people can earn a livelihood, and in some cases, it can be a lifeline for those who are struggling to make ends meet.

The Cultural Significance of Crowded Markets

Crowded markets are not just a place to buy and sell goods and services, they are also an important part of the cultural fabric of a community. Crowded markets reflect the values and traditions of the communities in which they are located. They are a reflection of the local culture and customs, and they can be a window into the past. The market is a place where people can come together to celebrate festivals, and traditional festivals and ceremonies are often held in the market.

Challenges of Crowded Markets

Despite their cultural and economic importance, crowded markets can also present challenges for vendors, customers, and authorities. One of the main challenges is the overcrowding, which can make it difficult for vendors to set up their stalls, and for customers to navigate the market. Crowded markets can also be a breeding ground for disease, and they can be a target for crime and theft. Crowded markets can also be a source of pollution and environmental degradation, with vendors and customers generating waste and pollution.

In conclusion, a crowded market is a bustling and energetic place where vendors and customers come together to exchange goods and services. The sights, sounds, and smells of a crowded market are captivating, and the social and economic interactions that take place are a reflection of the cultural and economic importance of the market . The cultural significance of crowded markets is an important aspect of the market, reflecting the values and traditions of the communities in which they are located. Despite their importance, crowded markets also present challenges, including overcrowding, health concerns, crime, and pollution.

These challenges should be addressed through proper planning, regulations and enforcement, while still preserving the cultural and economic significance of these markets. Overall, crowded markets are a vital part of many communities, providing economic opportunities, cultural expression, and social interaction. They should be recognized as a valuable asset and protected as a cultural and economic institution.

crowded market scene essay

As I push through the throngs of people in the crowded market scene , I can feel the buzz of energy all around me. The sounds of haggling and bargaining, the sights of colorful stalls and vendors, and the smells of street food wafting through the air all combine to create an unforgettable sensory experience. But behind this vibrant exterior lies a complex web of economic and social forces that shape the dynamics of the marketplace.

One of the first things that strikes me is the sheer variety of products on offer. From fresh produce to handicrafts to clothing and electronics, the market seems to cater to every possible need and desire. This diversity is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the vendors who operate here, constantly adapting to changing trends and consumer preferences.

But with so many options, how do consumers decide what to buy? This is where branding and marketing come into play. Savvy vendors know that in order to stand out from the competition, they need to create a strong brand identity and communicate this effectively to potential customers. This can involve everything from eye-catching packaging and signage to social media campaigns and influencer partnerships.

Of course, not all vendors have the resources or expertise to invest in sophisticated marketing strategies. For many, the key to success lies in offering high-quality products at competitive prices. This can mean cutting costs by sourcing materials from cheaper suppliers or negotiating better deals with wholesalers. It can also mean focusing on niche products that cater to a specific demographic or interest group.

But regardless of their approach, all vendors face the same fundamental challenge: how to make their products visible and attractive in a crowded marketplace. This is where visual merchandising comes into play. By arranging their products in aesthetically pleasing and logical ways, vendors can draw the attention of passersby and encourage them to make a purchase. This might involve grouping related items together, creating eye-catching displays, or using color and lighting to create a particular mood or atmosphere.

Of course, the dynamics of the market are not purely driven by economic considerations. Social factors also play a significant role. For example, the demographics of the area in which the market is located can have a big impact on the types of products and services on offer. In a predominantly tourist area, for example, vendors are likely to focus on souvenirs and other items that appeal to visitors. In a working-class neighborhood, on the other hand, vendors may prioritize practical goods and services that are essential to everyday life.

Moreover, the market is not just a place to buy and sell goods – it is also a hub of social interaction and community building. For many people, a visit to the market is not just about purchasing specific items, but also about engaging with friends and neighbors, meeting new people, and experiencing the vibrant energy of the crowd. This social dimension is reflected in the variety of food stalls and other refreshment options available in many markets, which offer not just sustenance but also a chance to relax and socialize.

Despite all these factors, the market is not immune to the broader economic and political forces that shape society. For example, government policies around taxation, trade, and labor can have a big impact on the viability of small-scale vendors in the market. Similarly, changes in consumer behavior or technology can disrupt traditional market structures and force vendors to adapt or risk being left behind.

Overall, the crowded market scene is a complex and dynamic environment that reflects the ingenuity, creativity, and diversity of human society. From branding and marketing to visual merchandising and social interaction, every aspect of the market is shaped by a unique set of economic, social, and cultural forces. As I weave my way through the throngs of people, I am struck by the sheer vitality and vibrancy of this unique ecosystem, and the endless possibilities it offers for exploration, innovation, and community building.

One of the most exciting aspects of the crowded market scene is the opportunity for discovery. With so many vendors and products to choose from, there is always something new and unexpected to uncover. Whether it’s a unique flavor of street food, a handmade piece of jewelry, or a rare vintage item, the market offers a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be found.

But discovery is not just limited to finding new products. The market also offers a chance to explore different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. Through interactions with vendors and other shoppers, we can gain a deeper understanding of the values, beliefs, and customs that shape our diverse global community. In this way, the market serves as a powerful symbol of the interconnectedness and interdependence of our world.

In addition to discovery, the market also fosters innovation and creativity. By providing a platform for small-scale entrepreneurs and artisans to showcase their products and ideas, the market encourages experimentation and risk-taking. This can lead to the development of new products, services, and business models that might not have been possible in a more restrictive and regulated environment.

Moreover, the market also offers a space for community building and social cohesion. By bringing people together from different backgrounds and walks of life, the market promotes a sense of shared identity and common purpose. This can be particularly important in contexts where social divisions and inequality are pervasive, as the market offers a platform for marginalized groups to assert their presence and voice.

But perhaps the most important aspect of the crowded market scene is the human connections it fosters. In a world that can often feel impersonal and disconnected, the market offers a chance for face-to-face interactions and genuine human connection. Whether it’s sharing a joke with a vendor, haggling over prices, or simply enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the market, these moments of connection can be deeply meaningful and enriching.

As I reflect on my experiences in the crowded market scene, I am struck by the many ways in which it embodies the diversity, creativity, and resilience of human society. Despite the challenges and obstacles it faces, the market continues to thrive and evolve, driven by the energy and ingenuity of the people who operate within it. And as long as there are people willing to explore, innovate, and connect, the market will continue to be a vibrant and essential part of our shared human experience.

Global Markets Essay

Introduction, going global is a long term project, the need for research.

Technological advancements have made it possible for the world to be closely connected. Many business organizations have opted to widen the scope of their markets from just being localized to serving the world wide market.

In as much as this is a good step to take, there are considerations which need to be taken seriously before a business can embark on this journey. This article is a brief review of what it takes to globalize business activities.

It is very significant to acknowledge that going global is a long term project. Being a long term project therefore implies that the benefits may not be enjoyed in the short run and thus the need to have some funds set aside for this process. This might not be welcome for companies seeking profits in the short run.

When venturing into different markets, one needs to carry out an extensive research as in most cases there are many factors that differ among different regions which need to be taken care of.

Such factors may include issues such as customer preferences, legal considerations, and other logistics. These factors can not be taken care of at once; they have to be considered in a step wise manner hence making the whole process a long term one.

Going global means venturing into new markets around the world; markets constitute of people with different values which in most cases become determinants of what they consume. Going global has to be preceded by a market research (Lamb, Hair & McDaniel, 2010).

An effective market research will take time and funds. Carrying out a market research is extremely important if the process of going global has to be successfully carried out.

By carrying out a market research various significant aspects will be brought into light making it possible for a business to engage in strategic modification of its goods to fit the new markets – it is worth noting that it is the goods to fit the markets and not markets to fit the goods.

Some of the significant aspects which need to be researched on include legal issues, cultural factors, competition, and presence of strategic partners among other factors. All these factors have to be examined carefully to retrieve accurate information because any assumptions made may likely make a huge contribution to failure of a company in its globalization process (Levi, 2007).

It is quite unfortunate that in most cases, a primary research has to be carried out to find out how best goods can be adapted to fit in a new market. This is especially the case when the goods are unique in the market. New kinds of goods are often confronted with cultural challenges in new markets and in some cases they may even be rejected in some areas depending on cultural backgrounds of such areas.

If an organization decides to bring in goods whose substitutes are already in the market then still research has to be carried out to identify how such goods can be modified to compete well with the other substitutes already established in the market.

Other logistics such as getting a license in venturing into new markets have to be considered before even the market research because some countries may have restrictions on importation of goods. It should also be noted that globalizing of a company activities and operations will lead to extra administrative costs (Audretsch & Bonser, 2002).

International markets have some uncertainties some of which may be out of control of a foreign company: for instance, there might be constant change of laws regulating taxes, the volume of commodities which can brought into a country among other legislation which may act to the benefit of the foreign country but at the expense of the company (Dahl, 2004).

As seen above, the process of globalizing business operations is time and money consuming especially at the initial stages of getting to know new markets. This challenge should however not be viewed in a negative manner because there are ways that can be used to cut down costs.

One of the ways is by engaging in partnership with a company already operating in the new markets and use the knowledge of such a company on various aspects of the new market (Delaney, 2011).

The advantage that comes with the process of globalizing business activities is that of increased sales thus increased profits. By venturing into new markets, a business creates more room for expansion and reduces the risk of local market uncertainties. New markets also make it possible for a business to come up with strategies which might even be imported to the local market.

Globalizing business activities requires advanced planning as there are many aspects which have to be considered. Due to the detailed planning especially at the initial stages, the process becomes costly and consumes a lot of time.

In the long run, however, the process is beneficial to a business seeking this kind of expansion. By globalizing business activities a business benefits from increased sales and diversifies the risks associated with the local market.

How to Write a Market Description

Last Updated: November 21, 2023 References

This article was co-authored by Michael R. Lewis . Michael R. Lewis is a retired corporate executive, entrepreneur, and investment advisor in Texas. He has over 40 years of experience in business and finance, including as a Vice President for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. He has a BBA in Industrial Management from the University of Texas at Austin. This article has been viewed 172,488 times.

When starting a company, it is important to determine who your potential customers are and what their needs look like. You must get a handle on the market. Who are your main competitors and what could you do better or differently? Writing a market description is a good way to place your product appropriately. Potential investors and customers will garner a better sense of how your product fits into its target market. Although you may have other instances where you need to write a market description, the most common is as part of a general business plan .

Market Description Template and Example

write a essay about market place

Doing Market Research

Step 1 Plan time for research.

  • Before writing a market description, be aware of the “iceberg principle.” The majority of the iceberg is underwater. This represents your research time and spent energy. Only the tip is visible. The small tip is your output, e.g., website, advertising, brochures, and business cards. [1] X Research source
  • Your market description forms part of your business plan overall. For tips on writing a thorough business plan, see Write a Business Plan .

Step 2 Determine who your customers are.

  • For example, let's say you are starting a high-end laundering service. Your customers could be professional workers with high amounts of disposable income. They are both men and women, some with children and some without children. Your customers like to spend their time with their families and working out or taking cooking lessons. What they lack is free time.
  • Your potential customers would probably not include families with low amounts of disposable income, individuals who work at jobs that don’t require high-end laundering of their wardrobe, etc.

Step 3 Identify the size of this market.

  • Do some demographic research on your area. The SBA is a good place to start, but chambers of commerce and other offices in your community can also help. How many people matching the description of your target market live in your area? Do they tend to live in one area, or spread out?

Step 4 Get a sense of your competitors.

  • For instance, your competitor could offer laundry services with delivery. Customers are annoyed, though, that they have to drop off their laundry. Could you create a profitable model that combines pick-up and drop-off delivery services?

Writing your Description

Step 1 Overview what your business does.

  • For example, "Petra’s Pick Up and Drop Off Laundry offers a full range of laundry services, e.g., washing, drying, ironing, dry cleaning. Our business prides itself on being the only business in the Luxesville area that offers both pick up and drop off delivery services."

Step 2 Explain why you chose your market.

  • For example: “Our market research has shown that there are too few laundry services available to Luxesville’s highly professional population. Only two businesses exist for a population of 125,000 people and they are both located in the same neighborhood. We would like to offer our services in the up-and-coming south end of the city where young, busy professionals are flocking. Because of market trends, we anticipate demand for our services will increase by 20% in the next two years."

Step 3 Describe your intended customer base.

  • For example, you might write: “Because 80% of Luxesville’s residents work over sixty hours per week and thus have limited free time, laundry services are particularly attractive. Additionally, as the median income in Luxesville is $175,000, we ascertain that residents have enough disposable income to afford our services. 60% of those workers earning above the median income are women, meaning that this area has a large number of professional women. In fact, only 14% of households have a stay-at-home spouse. This means the traditional relegation of laundry to an at-home partner is less likely to occur. We plan to target professional households with high disposable income between the ages of 25-55.”

Step 4 Evaluate the values and interests of your potential customers.

  • For example, “Luxesville’s professional population is highly educated, overworked, and extraordinarily stressed. Many of these people value any free moment of time they have to exercise, spend time with their children, or visit restaurants. They do not want to waste time on mundane tasks like grocery shopping or laundry. They are frustrated that the only laundry services available require customers to drop off their laundry during business hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Many of these professionals are not home until 8, 9, or 10 p.m. Thus, having the ability to have their laundry picked up and dropped off and to order such services online is a huge attraction.”

Step 5 Review competitors.

  • You can also use surveys to ask your competitors' customers about their perceptions, ask suppliers in your industry about orders, and use online tools to do market research. [9] X Research source Provide any details about your competitors that can make your entry into the market stronger.
  • For example, you might write, “Our competing launderers, “Drop and Sop” and “Clarity is Wearity,” are serving their maximum amount of customers. As previously noted, they both operate in the Hedgefund Forest neighborhood. Because they are family-owned enterprises, which is a positive point to some customers, they offer restricted hours and both close at 6 p.m. This does not serve the professional community. Their decision not to offer pick up services also has left many customers disgruntled. Thus, by beginning our business in the south end of the city, we hope to build a strong base and eventually expand towards Hedgefund Forest to pick up the slack of other launders.”

Step 6 End with a product review.

  • Examine the larger context of your products or services. You might offer information on pricing, other consumer metrics, or any other information that strengthens your point.

Step 7 Revise for flow.

To write a market description, start by crafting a 1-2 sentence overview of what your business does. Then, in the next 2-3 sentences, explain your reasoning for choosing this market, whether that be lower business taxes, a lack of other businesses in the market, or positive market trends. Next, describe your ideal customer demographic, such as age, income, sex, and marital status, and outline how your product or service will appeal to that demographic. Finally, make sure to review other competitors in the market to assess what they’re doing right or wrong and how your business will provide something they don’t. Other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about writing an essay, an appeal to the senses: the development of the braille system in nineteenth-century france.

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

In France, debates about how to deal with disability led to the adoption of different strategies over time. While people with temporary difficulties were able to access public welfare, the most common response to people with long-term disabilities, such as hearing or vision loss, was to group them together in institutions (Tombs, 1996). At first, a joint institute for the blind and deaf was created, and although the partnership was motivated more by financial considerations than by the well-being of the residents, the institute aimed to help people develop skills valuable to society (Weygand, 2009). Eventually blind institutions were separated from deaf institutions, and the focus shifted towards education of the blind, as was the case for the Royal Institute for Blind Youth, which Louis Braille attended (Jimenez et al, 2009). The growing acknowledgement of the uniqueness of different disabilities led to more targeted education strategies, fostering an environment in which the benefits of a specifically blind education could be more widely recognized.

Several different systems of tactile reading can be seen as forerunners to the method Louis Braille developed, but these systems were all developed based on the sighted system. The Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris taught the students to read embossed roman letters, a method created by the school’s founder, Valentin Hauy (Jimenez et al., 2009). Reading this way proved to be a rather arduous task, as the letters were difficult to distinguish by touch. The embossed letter method was based on the reading system of sighted people, with minimal adaptation for those with vision loss. As a result, this method did not gain significant success among blind students.

Louis Braille was bound to be influenced by his school’s founder, but the most influential pre-Braille tactile reading system was Charles Barbier’s night writing. A soldier in Napoleon’s army, Barbier developed a system in 1819 that used 12 dots with a five line musical staff (Kersten, 1997). His intention was to develop a system that would allow the military to communicate at night without the need for light (Herron, 2009). The code developed by Barbier was phonetic (Jimenez et al., 2009); in other words, the code was designed for sighted people and was based on the sounds of words, not on an actual alphabet. Barbier discovered that variants of raised dots within a square were the easiest method of reading by touch (Jimenez et al., 2009). This system proved effective for the transmission of short messages between military personnel, but the symbols were too large for the fingertip, greatly reducing the speed at which a message could be read (Herron, 2009). For this reason, it was unsuitable for daily use and was not widely adopted in the blind community.

Nevertheless, Barbier’s military dot system was more efficient than Hauy’s embossed letters, and it provided the framework within which Louis Braille developed his method. Barbier’s system, with its dashes and dots, could form over 4000 combinations (Jimenez et al., 2009). Compared to the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, this was an absurdly high number. Braille kept the raised dot form, but developed a more manageable system that would reflect the sighted alphabet. He replaced Barbier’s dashes and dots with just six dots in a rectangular configuration (Jimenez et al., 2009). The result was that the blind population in France had a tactile reading system using dots (like Barbier’s) that was based on the structure of the sighted alphabet (like Hauy’s); crucially, this system was the first developed specifically for the purposes of the blind.

While the Braille system gained immediate popularity with the blind students at the Institute in Paris, it had to gain acceptance among the sighted before its adoption throughout France. This support was necessary because sighted teachers and leaders had ultimate control over the propagation of Braille resources. Many of the teachers at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth resisted learning Braille’s system because they found the tactile method of reading difficult to learn (Bullock & Galst, 2009). This resistance was symptomatic of the prevalent attitude that the blind population had to adapt to the sighted world rather than develop their own tools and methods. Over time, however, with the increasing impetus to make social contribution possible for all, teachers began to appreciate the usefulness of Braille’s system (Bullock & Galst, 2009), realizing that access to reading could help improve the productivity and integration of people with vision loss. It took approximately 30 years, but the French government eventually approved the Braille system, and it was established throughout the country (Bullock & Galst, 2009).

Although Blind people remained marginalized throughout the nineteenth century, the Braille system granted them growing opportunities for social participation. Most obviously, Braille allowed people with vision loss to read the same alphabet used by sighted people (Bullock & Galst, 2009), allowing them to participate in certain cultural experiences previously unavailable to them. Written works, such as books and poetry, had previously been inaccessible to the blind population without the aid of a reader, limiting their autonomy. As books began to be distributed in Braille, this barrier was reduced, enabling people with vision loss to access information autonomously. The closing of the gap between the abilities of blind and the sighted contributed to a gradual shift in blind people’s status, lessening the cultural perception of the blind as essentially different and facilitating greater social integration.

The Braille system also had important cultural effects beyond the sphere of written culture. Its invention later led to the development of a music notation system for the blind, although Louis Braille did not develop this system himself (Jimenez, et al., 2009). This development helped remove a cultural obstacle that had been introduced by the popularization of written musical notation in the early 1500s. While music had previously been an arena in which the blind could participate on equal footing, the transition from memory-based performance to notation-based performance meant that blind musicians were no longer able to compete with sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997). As a result, a tactile musical notation system became necessary for professional equality between blind and sighted musicians (Kersten, 1997).

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

An essay is a focused piece of writing that explains, argues, describes, or narrates.

In high school, you may have to write many different types of essays to develop your writing skills.

Academic essays at college level are usually argumentative : you develop a clear thesis about your topic and make a case for your position using evidence, analysis and interpretation.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main point of a paragraph . Everything else in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Properly Write Your Degree

The correct way to communicate your degree to employers and others is by using the following formats:

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Double Majors - You will not be receiving two bachelor's degrees if you double major. Your primary major determines the degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). If you're not fully sure which of your majors is primary, check CheckMarq or call the registrar's office.

Example: Primary Major: Psychology ; Secondary Major: Marketing
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Marketing

Primary Major: Marketing ; Secondary Major: Psychology

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing & Psychology

In a letter, you may shorten your degree by writing it this way:

  • In May 20XX, I will graduate with my Bachelor's degree in International Affairs.
  • In December 20XX, I will graduate with my Master's degree in Counseling Education.

Not sure which degree you are graduating with? Here is a list of Undergraduate Majors and corresponding degrees:

  • College of Arts & Sciences
  • College of Business Administration
  • College of Communication
  • College of Education
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Health Sciences

Gig workers are writing essays for AI to learn from

  • Companies are hiring highly educated gig workers to write training content for AI models .
  • The shift toward more sophisticated trainers comes as tech giants scramble for new data sources.
  • AI could run out of data to learn from by 2026, one research institute has warned.

Insider Today

As artificial intelligence models run out of data to train themselves on, AI companies are increasingly turning to actual humans to write training content.

For years, companies have used gig workers to help train AI models on simple tasks like photo identification , data annotation, and labelling. But the rapidly advancing technology now requires more advanced people to train it.

Companies such as Scale AI and Surge AI are hiring part-timers with graduate degrees to write essays and creative prompts for the bots to gobble up, The New York Times reported . Scale AI, for example, posted a job last year looking for people with Master's degrees or PhDs, who are fluent in either English, Hindi, or Japanese and have professional writing experience in fields like poetry, journalism, and publishing.

Related stories

Their mission? To help AI bots "become better writers," Scale AI wrote in the posting.

And an army of workers are needed to do this kind of work. Scale AI has as many as tens of thousands of contractors working on its platform at a time, per the Times.

"What really makes the A.I. useful to its users is the human layer of data, and that really needs to be done by smart humans and skilled humans and humans with a particular degree of expertise and a creative bent," Willow Primack, the vice president of data operations at Scale AI, told the New York Times. "We have been focusing on contractors, particularly within North America, as a result."

The shift toward more sophisticated gig trainers comes as tech giants scramble to find new data to train their technology on. That's because the programs learn so incredibly fast that they're already running out of available resources to learn from. The vast trove of online information — everything from scientific papers to news articles to Wikipedia pages — is drying up.

Epoch, an AI research institute, has warned that AI could run out of data by 2026.

So, companies are finding more and more creative ways to make sure their systems never stop learning. Google has considered accessing its customers' data in Google Docs , Sheets, and Slides while Meta even thought about buying publishing house Simon & Schuster to harvest its book collection, Business Insider previously reported.
