Jolly Groceries is a new specialty ethnic grocery store opening in June 2022 in the trendy Downtown New York neighbourhood of Brooklyn. The store will carry local and international foods from the Middle East and open seven days a week from 9 am to 10 pm to serve the local community and local Middle Eastern Immigrants.

The Company will be a partnership between Mr. Neil Stallen (owning 51%) and his business partner Mr. Tim Wilson (owning 49%). Mr. Stallen currently owns another grocery store (Aria Market) in New York, where Mr. Wilson is the manager. The two partners have a combined 25 years of experience in the grocery industry. 

The store is for the whole community, but the main draw will be for the specialty Middle Eastern products that Aria Market doesn’t have room to stock. It will be physically larger than their Bidwell location, with over 7,000 sq ft of retail space plus 3,900 sq ft of back office, food prep, and inventory storage in the back. 

Jolly Groceries will fill a local need for a local grocery store for residents and tourists alike.  During the summer months, as the tourist population in New York increases, the market expects to see increased demand for their products, which will lead to a growth in sales.  

The Company plans to become a local hub for the local Middle Eastern community. As such, the Company will:

  • Cashiers : Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work in a fast-paced environment and keep their cool in the presence of customers. Proven success in providing excellent customer service will be critical, and they must have a collaborative spirit to become a great team player. 
  • Cashier and Produce Supervisors : We require store supervisors to have at least three years of experience in a grocery store. This experience means that they understand the inner workings of a grocery store and likely also have valuable leadership skills, which is another requirement for any applicant in this position. 
  • Prep Room and Produce Workers : Applicants for this position require a proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment. They must work well with others and can lift up to 50lbs. 

Staff will be paid between $15.65 and $18 per hour in the first year, $16.25 – $19 per hour in year two, and $17 – $20.50 per hour in year three of operation.

Mr. Stallen started his experience in the grocery industry as a convenience store manager for two years. He went on to be the owner of Aria Market for 15 years. He has experience in all aspects of grocery store operations. 

Mr. Wilson will be the store manager as he has extensive experience as the store manager for Aria Market. He will be paid $60,000 per year in year one, $72,000 in year two, and $78,000 in year three.

Planning what to buy is essential for efficient and cost-effective trips to the grocery store. It’s smart to customize a list based on where you do your grocery shopping; you’ll find a different selection at a supermarket than at a wholesale club or neighborhood health food store.

Stocking up on toilet paper, laundry detergent and pasta sauce might be better left for places like Costco . But what should you buy at your standard grocery store? Focus on basics like fruits, vegetables and dairy.

What to buy when grocery shopping

“Work with your family to establish some high-value staples that can be repurposed in many ways and use those as the base of your grocery list,” recommends Alex Ammar, a certified financial planner in Montverde, Florida. Foods like chicken and potatoes can serve as the foundation for multiple recipes.

You can turn to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Dietary Guidelines for Americans for more inspiration. The guidelines include several “core elements” for a healthy diet: vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, protein foods and oils.

Use these categories as a framework for your family's list, keeping allergies or dietary restrictions in mind.

Fruits and vegetables

Fresh, in-season produce typically costs less and offers better quality and taste than produce grown out of season. You can also find affordable year-round produce, such as bananas (less than 30 cents each at some stores at the time of this writing) and carrots. Ammar suggests buying whatever fruits and veggies are on sale to get a diversity of micronutrients over time.

Canned and frozen options are great, too, because they last a long time and are less likely to go to waste.

“I love to buy frozen corn when fresh corn is not in season. It's generally going to be less expensive. Nutritionally, it's great, you can do a ton with it,” says Rachel West, a registered dietitian and senior nutrition editor at eMeals, a meal-planning app. “The work is already done for you because it's already off the cob.”

Foods such as meat, poultry, seafood and eggs are good sources of protein. Nuts, seeds, lentils and soy products like tofu are also protein-rich.

West says that because meat is often the most expensive part of a meal, cutting back even once a week can save you money if you’re a big meat eater. When buying meat, she recommends getting the cuts you like in a higher quantity when there’s a sale.

“If you see something on sale, stock up on it, put it in your freezer, if you can,” West says. “That way you can kind of ration it out to keep those costs low.”

The bread at the grocery store might not match the quality of your local bakery, but it likely will cost less, especially if you buy the store brand. Other grains like rice and dry pasta are budget-friendly, simple to cook and have a long shelf life.

Dairy and dairy alternatives

Milk, yogurt, cheese and other dairy products support vitamin and calcium intake and can be used in a variety of dishes. You can buy items like milk and shredded cheese in larger sizes or when on sale to save money. Freeze extras to make them last longer.

To meet the USDA’s healthy diet guidelines, opt for fat-free or low-fat dairy products, or look for nondairy products that have a similar nutritional value, such as soy milk.

Pick up oils for cooking, baking or flavoring, such as olive oil and vegetable oil. Purchasing bigger bottles will usually be cheaper per unit. For example, Walmart’s Great Value classic olive oil sells for 36 cents per fluid ounce for the 17-ounce size compared with 31.2 cents per ounce for the 101-ounce bottle. However, know whether you’ll use up a particular type of oil before it goes rancid or develops an off-flavor.

As you grocery shop, you may also want to grab additional items that you use regularly, such as seasonings, to stock your pantry.

Not every grocery store will have the best prices or widest assortment of certain goods like household cleaning and beauty products. But if you need something in a pinch and have room in your budget, it can be worth adding to your cart, too.

How to protect your budget at the grocery store

Following a few simple strategies can help you save money at the grocery store :

Plan your meals. Arrive at the grocery store with specific items in mind and stick to your list. The USDA’s MyPlate website features budget-friendly foods and recipes to help shoppers plan what to buy. There’s also no shortage of social media accounts, blogs and apps dedicated to meal planning. Knowing what ingredients you’ll use, and how much you need, can help you right-size purchases to avoid food waste.

Don’t shop hungry. Going to the grocery store on an empty stomach can lead to buying more than you planned. As Ammar puts it, “hungry minds make for impulse food purchases.” 

Shop the perimeter. West says that the groceries you’ll find around the store’s perimeter, such as fresh fruits, are less likely to have seen rising costs due to inflation than those in the interior. Foods stocked in the center aisles are typically less-healthy processed or convenience items like chips and premade sauces. 

Buy store-brand items. Store-brand products are often less expensive but comparable in quality to name-brand products. Sometimes they’re even made by the same manufacturer, just sold under different labels.

Start digging through your couch cushions for quarters: a German grocery store is introducing a new location in southern Arizona.

Tucson will welcome Arizona’s thirteenth Aldi , a discount supermarket known for its European-inspired shopping experience.

The new location will open at Tucson Marketplace at The Bridges, according to Tucson Foodie. This is Tucson’s first Aldi, with other locations including Buckeye, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Laveen Village, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Queen Creek and Tempe.

This new addition is one of several, as Aldi announced in early 2024 that 800 new stores will be introduced across the United States by 2028.

Kroger, Albertsons — still hoping to merge — agree to sell more stores to satisfy regulators

Supermarket chains Kroger and Albertsons said Monday they will sell more of their stores in an effort to quell the federal government’s concerns about their proposed merger.

The companies now plan to sell 579 Kroger and Albertsons stores in markets where they overlap to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a New Hampshire grocery supplier and operator, for $2.9 billion. Under the initial divestiture plan , announced in September, C&S had planned to purchase 413 stores for $1.9 billion.

It’s unclear if the new plan will satisfy regulators. In February, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sued to block the $24.6 billion merger between the grocery giants, saying the lack of competition would lead to higher grocery prices and lower wages for workers.

The FTC also said the initial plan to divest 413 stores to C&S was “inadequate” and would give C&S a hodgepodge of unconnected stores and brands, leaving it ill-equipped to compete with a combined Kroger and Albertsons.

Under the updated plan, Kroger would sell its Haggen banner to C&S. C&S would also license the Albertsons banner in California and Wyoming and the Safeway banner in Arizona and Colorado. C&S would also get access to some private-label brands in the stores. Under the proposal, C&S would keep all of the stores open and honor any labor agreements.

“We are confident this expanded divestiture package will provide the stores, supporting assets and expert operators needed to ensure these stores continue to successfully serve their communities for many generations to come,” C&S CEO Eric Winn said in a statement.

Kroger and Albertsons announced their planned merger in October 2022. The companies say it’s necessary so they can better compete with Walmart, Amazon and other big rivals.

Cash-strapped consumers are flooding the aisles of discount grocer Aldi – giving it the boost it needs to emerge as a winner in the inflation era , the Wall Street Journal reported.

The supermarket chain is seeing an increase in shoppers on the hunt for bargains, according to Jason Hart, chief executive officer of Aldi’s U.S. operations, who spoke to the publication.

Hart told the Journal that for Aldi to keep its prices low for customers, the company has had to be intentional about the way it runs its business. And that has meant making changes, such as switching to in-store digital tags, selling more of its own products, and working with various freight carriers.

Those changes are also trickling over to the sales floor. According to Hart, it means putting items for sale in the packages they were shipped in. It has also meant buying private brands rather than national ones. That tailored selection of items gives Aldi the ability to buy more of those products for less money, he told the publication.

Even with the clear-cut strategy in place, Hart said Aldi has been having “tougher conversations on how we can extract costs,” so that labor and production expenses aren’t passed down to consumers.

Nonetheless, German-founded Aldi plans to expand its U.S. footprint. In early March, the company said it would invest more than $9 billion to open 800 new stores nationwide in a five-year expansion plan. The company has nearly 2,400 U.S. locations .

That could bode well for Aldi as it looks to keep up with competitors like Walmart and Target. Currently, Walmart has over 4,600 U.S. locations , while Target has more than 1,900 stores .

Tucker Carlson went to Moscow last week and had an absolute blast. He rode the subway and marveled at its clean cars, the fancy tilework in Kievskaya Station, and the lack of booze-drenched hobos. He went to a grocery store and was astonished by what ordinary people could apparently buy. He even managed to meet a local history buff and sit down for tea and conversation. Carlson, who had never previously visited Moscow, declared himself “radicalized” against America’s leaders by the experience. He didn’t want to live in Moscow, but he did want to know why we in America have to put up with street crime and crappy food when the supposedly bankrupt Russia provided such a nice life for its people, or at least those people not named Alexei Navalny .

My former Atlantic colleague Ralph Waldo Emerson called travel a “fool’s paradise,” but not all forms of foolishness are equal. Many commentators have guffawed at Carlson’s Russophilia and pointed out that Russia’s murder rate is roughly that of the United States, and that its citizens are dirt poor, about a fifth as wealthy per capita as the citizens of the United States overall. “I don’t care what some flagship supermarket in an imperial city looks like,” The Dispatch ’s Jonah Goldberg tweeted. “Russia is far, far poorer than our poorest state, Mississippi.” Bloomberg ’s Joe Weisenthal suggested that Carlson instead visit the grocery stores of the “10th or 50th” richest Russian cities, and see how they compare with America’s.

In 2019, I visited several large and small Russian cities, and I went grocery shopping at least once in each. Would you believe that Tucker Carlson is on to something? In Moscow (the largest) and St. Petersburg (No. 2), the flagship supermarkets are indeed spectacular. The Azbuka Vkusa branch next to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow is more luxurious than any grocery store within 100 miles of Washington, D.C. Other branches in Moscow vary in quality, and they are usually smaller than American supermarkets. But to some extent that’s just a matter of culture: The U.S. has fewer supermarkets, but each one is big enough to feed the 82nd Airborne Division for a month; in Europe, supermarkets are more numerous but tiny.

Makhachkala (22), the capital of Dagestan, followed a similar pattern to Moscow. One supermarket downtown was amazing, the equal of an upscale supermarket in Washington or Dallas. On the outskirts the quality varied, but not drastically. Local residents were not eating soups made from grass clippings. In Murmansk (71), the cramped bodega near my rented flat had a good wine selection and enough fresh staple foods to prepare a different meal your mom would approve of every day of the week. Only in Derbent (134) did I start to wonder whether the bad old days of the Soviet Union were still in effect. But even that would be an exaggeration. In Derbent, for $15, you could get champagne and caviar with blini and velvety sour cream. If you want to flash back to Cold War communism, go to Havana. There the grocery stores stock only dust and mildew.

With apologies to Emerson, travel can disabuse you of foolish notions just as often as it plants them in your head. An idea ripe for dispelling among Americans at this particular moment is that life in Russia must suck because the frigid depression of the Cold War never ended. In those days ordinary citizens were spied upon and tortured and killed, and the shops were empty, save for substandard goods at prices few could afford. Now Russia is different. The state repression is much more limited, though no less brutal toward those who attract its attention. Until the Ukraine war added a huge category of forbidden topics, the main ones that you could get locked up for discussing were war in the Caucasus and the personal life and finances of President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle. Most other topics were broachable, and you could whine all you liked about them.

Equally in need of updating are American expectations about Russian economic misery. Those whose visits to Russia stopped 20 years ago tend to have outdated views of the best the country has to offer. My visits started 24 years ago. Back then, I spent days at a time on the Trans-Siberian, crammed into railway cabins with little to do but talk with Russians and see how they lived. Life was not beautiful. The men busied themselves with crosswords and sullenly browsed pornography. When not in motion, I stayed with Russian friends in single-room flats that looked straight out of a New York tenement building 100 years ago. No one I met was starving, but women sometimes approached me in train stations hoping to rent out their homes or bodies, or to sell me family heirlooms. That type of desperation seems to have subsided, although I would be shocked if any of those people are able to buy the jamón ibérico at the Smolenskaya branch of Azbuka Vkusa yet. On the roads between the big cities, there are still villages so ramshackle that they look like sets from The Little Rascals . Evidence suggests that the Russian military’s frontline troops tend to come from these depressed and benighted lands, the places that really are stuck in the 20th century.

Certain aspects of life remain dismal even in the cities. My flat in Murmansk had surly drunks tottering outside its entrance, and its stairwell smelled like every cat, dog, and human resident had marked its territory there regularly since the Brezhnev era. But the playgrounds were decent, and you could get a delicious smoked-reindeer pizza at a cozy restaurant for $7. Remember, this is in a small, depressed Russian city—not somewhere stocked with goodies just in case an American wanders out of the lobby of the Radisson and needs to be impressed. The “useful idiots” of yesteryear were treated to fake Moscows, which evanesced as soon as the next Aeroflot flights took off. The luxuries of Moscow that Carlson sees, and that I saw, are not evanescent, and they are not (as they are in North Korea, say) a curated experience available only to those on controlled visits.

The stubborn belief that all good things in Russia must be illusory can in turn warp one’s analysis of the country, and in particular of Putin’s durability in power. After all, why would anyone remain loyal to an autocrat who delivered only hunger, penury, and the reek of cat piss? Putin rules by fear but not only by fear. Most Russians will tell you that Russia today is better than it was before Putin. They compare it not with the Soviet era but with the anarchy and decline of the 1990s. Life expectancy has risen, public parks are better maintained, and certain fruits of capitalism can be tasted by Russians of all classes. Who would risk these gains? Like every autocrat, Putin has ensured that his downfall just might destroy every good thing Russia has experienced in the past two decades. This risk is, from the perspective of regime continuity, a positive feature, because it keeps all but the most principled and brave opposition quiet, and content to shut up and enjoy their cheap caviar. Those like Navalny who object do not object for long.

Carlson’s videos never quite say what precisely he thinks Russia gets right. Moscow is in many ways superior to New York. But Paris has a good subway system too. Japan and Thailand have fine grocery stores, and I wonder, when I enter them, why entering my neighborhood Stop & Shop in America is such a depressing experience by comparison. Carlson’s stated preference for Putin’s leadership over Joe Biden’s suggests that the affection is not for fine food or working public transit but for firm autocratic rule—which, as French, Thais, and Japanese will attest, is not a precondition for high-quality goods and services. And in an authoritarian state, those goods and services can serve to prolong the regime.

I confess I still enjoy watching Carlson post videos of Moscow, wide-eyed and credulous as he slowly learns to love a country that I love too. I hope he posts more of them. One goes through stages of love for Russia, often starting with the literature and music, then moving to its dark humor and the personalities of its people, which are always cycling between thaw and frost. Inevitably one reflects on the irony that this civilization, whose achievement is almost without equal in some respects, is utterly cursed in others—consigned to literally centuries of misgovernment, incompetence, and tyranny. The final stage is realizing that the greatness of Russia is part of the curse, a heightening of the irony, as if no matter how much goes right, something is deeply wrong. Maybe when things go right, the more deeply wrong it is. Carlson seems to still be in one of the early stages of this journey.

'Deeply unhappy' grocery shoppers plan to boycott Loblaw-owned stores in May

A boycott targeting Loblaw is gaining momentum online, with what could be thousands of shoppers taking their money elsewhere in May.

It's the latest sign of Canadians' mounting frustration with the major grocers, which have been under political and public scrutiny for rising food prices and profits.

“We don't want to struggle anymore,” said Emily Johnson, a mental health and addictions worker in Milton, Ont., and one of the boycott's organizers.

Johnson and others started organizing the boycott after a Reddit group she created gained thousands of followers looking for a place to complain about Loblaw and other grocers.

The page, r/loblawsisoutofcontrol , now has about 56,000 members. While there's no way of knowing how many will participate in the boycott, the page is full of posts from people who say they plan to, or have already started. There's also a list of demands to Loblaw from the boycott organizers that includes signing a grocery code of conduct and committing to affordable pricing.

The primary aim is to have a financial impact on Loblaw, Johnson said, the biggest of the Canadian grocers. But she also hopes the boycott educates people and gets the attention of government.

Mississauga resident and community advocate Rahul Mehta was already trying to cut back on shopping at Loblaw-owned stores, and plans to fully boycott the company come May.

He hopes the boycott drives shoppers not to other large grocers, but to local, independent stores.

“I think we could potentially see a resurgence in ... interest in learning and demanding real choices, not just Metro versus Loblaws,” he said.

Consumers increasingly feel powerless about the lack of choice they have, especially in smaller communities, said Monica LaBarge, an assistant professor at Queen's University studying food access and consumer well-being.

“It's unlikely that Loblaws is going to change ... its fundamental business model as a consequence of a boycott,” said LaBarge.

But that doesn't mean the company isn't taking notice, she added, saying the grocer recently walked back a controversial change to its discounts on products nearing their best-before date after public outcry.

Loblaw president and CEO Per Bank says the company is paying attention to customers and sees them trying to mitigate inflation by seeking out sales, buying more private-label products and shopping at discount stores.

The grocer is responding to these shifting behaviours through new promotions and expanding its discount footprint, he said in an interview.

Loblaw has to keep looking for ways to provide value to keep people coming back, he said: “We don't have a contract with our customers. They can choose to shop elsewhere tomorrow, if they don't like the offer that we're giving.”

Bank says he takes customer complaints personally, and if customers aren't happy, “that's something I want to fix.” He added that if one customer really dislikes Loblaw, “that's one too many.”

The boycott's effect on the company might not be immediate, but could build up over time if people's habits change, said LaBarge.

“That's where the financial impact is,” she said. “It's that consistent loss of consumers over time, because they're very hard to get back once they're gone.”

LaBarge said she thinks the grocers don't fully understand “how deeply unhappy their customers are,” and the risk that poses to their reputations.

Some boycott participants were once loyal Loblaw customers, like Willi Fleerakkers, who plans to forgo not only Loblaw, but also Metro and Empire stores in May.

“I've already switched (to) getting my vegetables and fruit from my local family store,” Fleerakkers said.

She isn't sure the boycott will significantly hit Loblaw's bottom line, but thinks it could affect their reputation.

For Ann de Sequeira, the boycott has already begun.

The impetus was Loblaw's move to reduce its discount level on food nearing its expiry date, she said.

De Sequeira, a Torontonian who posts about food on TikTok, said she's doing a “soft” boycott of the other two big Canadian grocers but has pretty much entirely cut Loblaw out of her life, cancelling her PC Financial Mastercard and moving her prescriptions from Shoppers Drug Mart.

Loblaw walking back its discount change showed de Sequeira that if consumers “make a stink about something that's loud enough, they have to take action,” she said.

Bank acknowledged that Loblaw's reputation has taken a hit since pre-pandemic times, and said it's something the company is looking to rebuild.

He argued it's easier for customers to “point fingers” at grocers like Loblaw than at other players in the supply chain or global factors leading to higher prices.

“Everybody knows Loblaws. Everybody knows our chairman (Galen Weston),” he said.

“We are (a) much, much easier target, and we need to live with that and that's fine.”

Some people are unsure about the boycott -- some aren't sure it will work, while for others, boycotting Loblaw-owned stores is easier said than done.

Both are the case for Halifax resident Tempa Hull. The two closest grocery stores to Hull are a Loblaws and a Sobeys, and she doesn't have a car. But she knows others have even less choice.

“Most people don't have the choice, time or money to do this,” she said.

She and her husband are going to try to participate, at least partially. Though they can't buy everything they need elsewhere, they plan to reduce their shopping at Loblaws.

“What I think this planned boycott is ultimately going to demonstrate is that they have us by the throat. That we're unable to boycott them because they simply own too many things that we need in order to live and function in society,” said Hull.

“And that right there, if anything, should be the big red flag to government that they need to get serious about fixing the problem.”

Kroger proposes selling southern Delaware stores to satisfy antitrust issues with Albertsons buyout

Kroger appears ready to sell off supermarkets in Coastal Delaware, which it operates under the Harris-Teeter banner, as it works to acquire Acme-Safeway owner Albertsons.

Supermarket News reported that this week, the grocery giant proposed a revised plan that it believes will address federal antitrust concerns .

Under the plan, Kroger would sell 166 additional stores to C&S, a grocery wholesaler that owns several dozen supermarkets and has a distribution center west of Newark in North East, MD. The stores would be located primarily in markets where Albertsons and Kroger stores pose monopoly concerns.

Harris-Teeter operates two stores in the southern Sussex County beach area and Albertsons has Acme and Safeway stores in Lewes-Rehoboth. Harris-Teeter previously sold off an underperforming store in Sussex, and over the years, Albertsons has closed Safeway and Acme stores in Dover and northern Delaware.

Acme was able to slow its long-running loss of market share several years ago when it acquired former Pathmark locations. It continues to update stores but faces growing competition that includes Aldi, Grocery Outlet, Wegmans, and Lidl.

Earlier, Sussex County was part of an antitrust settlement that led to the owner Ahold – the Netherlands-based Giant supermarket operator that acquired Food Lion – selling off southern Delaware stores to regional grocer Weis.

Supermarket News reported that federal regulators are skeptical of Kroger’s spin-offs. They cite C&S’s lack of experience operating a large supermarket chain, even with access to Kroger-Albertsons private label brands.

The Biden Administration’s antitrust unit has opposed the Kroger-Albertsons merger claiming the combination would create a monopoly. Kroger may be betting that a new administration would OK the deal.

Kroger says combining with Albertsons would provide more competition for Walmart, which now accounts for a large chunk of the nation’s supermarket business.

An iconic Moscow landmark is closing its doors this weekend, and local residents are indulging in some Soviet nostalgia.

Although the Eliseevsky grocery store was internationally famous for its lavish baroque decoration – think gold leaf, marble columns, and crystal chandeliers – locals loved the shop during Soviet times because in a land of perpetual shortages, Eliseevsky was a gastronomic Aladdin’s cave.

Why We Wrote This

Muscovites have fond memories of Eliseevsky, an ornate grocery store famous for full shelves in the shortage-plagued Soviet Union. Its closure underscores how different the consumer world is in modern Russia.

The Kremlin kept it that way, as a showcase for visitors of the city’s purportedly excellent provisioning. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Eliseevsky struggled to reinvent itself as a regular grocery store. But even its lavish interior could not compete with the lower prices and free parking at the new hypermarkets that have sprung up in Moscow’s suburbs, veritable cornucopias of 21st-century consumer capitalism.

Nobody knows what the future holds now for Eliseevsky, its premises and trademark caught up in legal tangles. But “Eliseevsky is an extraordinary place, which holds a lot of historical meaning,” says Irina Levina, a Moscow tour guide. “So there need to be some extraordinary decisions taken about what to do with it.

“It’s hard to imagine the city without it,” she adds.

This weekend one of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks, the  Eliseevsky  luxury grocery store, will close its doors forever, bowing after 120 years to the forces of 21st-century consumer capitalism.

Muscovites have been thronging to the old storefront, a stone’s throw from the Kremlin, for one last look. Some are stepping inside for a selfie against the shop’s extraordinary background of magnificent colonnaded walls, lavish vaulted ceiling, crystal chandeliers, and wood-paneled shelves.

Opened in 1901 in a former 18th-century palace, it served originally as a luxury food shop for pre-Revolutionary, upper-crust denizens of central Moscow. But it saw its heyday in the later Soviet period when, as “Gastronome No. 1,” it acted as a display window for visitors to the Soviet capital to showcase the city’s purportedly excellent provisioning.

In a land of perpetual shortages, Eliseevsky’s shelves were piled high with delicacies unimaginable elsewhere, such as oranges and bananas, coconuts and real coffee.

Foreign tourists usually scheduled a stop at Eliseevsky – they still do – while people from all over the Soviet Union would come to gawk at its palatial interior and snap up some impossibly rare produce to bring to the folks back home.

“My mother used to take me to Eliseevsky as a boy, and I still have the fondest memories of the place. Going there was kind of an escape,” says Mikhail Chernysh, now a researcher at the official Institute of Sociology in Moscow. “I recall a delicious kind of sausage that you just couldn’t find anywhere else. Of course, you had to stand in line for an hour or more to get some, but that doesn’t seem to tarnish the memory.”

Yes, those lychees are real

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union three decades ago, Eliseevsky has struggled to reinvent itself as a regular grocery store. Even neighborhood customers spurned it in favor of convenient supermarkets that offer lower prices and free parking.

Today the variety of goods on display in almost any village grocery shop makes Soviet-era Eliseevsky look impoverished by comparison. Hypermarkets, such as those belonging to the French Auchan chain, have sprung up in most Russian cities, and some older people admit that they still pinch themselves to be sure they are not dreaming up the spectacle of a cavernous shop with high shelves that overflow with every imaginable kind of produce.

Giant shopping malls sprawl through city suburbs too, offering a one-stop-shopping concentration of goods and services, along with enormous parking lots for automobile-obsessed, post-Soviet Russians. Some have even become popular sightseeing attractions, such as the three theme park-like  “Vegas”  malls on Moscow’s outskirts, one of which sports scale models of the Roman Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.    

And if you don’t want to go out shopping, web-based delivery services make it possible to order almost anything from a restaurant or supermarket and have it delivered to your door within an hour or so.

“Nowadays the food shortages we grew up with are a distant memory, and Eliseevsky’s claim to exclusivity is long gone,” says Mr. Chernysh. “It’s having enough money that’s the problem today, not the availability of things.”

An uncertain future

Eliseevsky’s woes grew as the ambitious Moscow city government embarked on a massive urban renovation project in recent years. That made driving in the city center even harder than it had been, encouraging residents of the exclusive Tverskaya Avenue neighborhood, near Eliseevsky, to sell up and move to the suburbs.

“There is now a severe shortage of parking downtown, and it’s hard to get to the Eliseevsky store even by taxi, since stopping is forbidden,” says Igor Berezin, a Moscow-based marketing consultant. “So Eliseevsky is mainly a shop for local residents, but there are far fewer of them in that area than there used to be. In fact, many luxury shops in the heart of downtown now find themselves in difficult straits.”

The store’s problems were compounded by a murky 1990’s privatization, which left the city claiming ownership of its premises, while a company that has since gone bankrupt holds the famous Eliseevsky trademark. City officials have promised to preserve the landmark in some form. But as its closure looms, no plan has been made public.

“Over the 20th century, nobody was taking care of old interiors in Moscow buildings, for various reasons,” which makes Eliseevsky a rare and valuable exception, says Alexander Frolov, a coordinator of Archnadzor, a public architectural watchdog. “The status of Eliseevsky as a historic monument stipulates that it must retain a commercial function. Something will have to be worked out.”

The building’s cachet as a tourist attraction is well established, and before the pandemic Moscow was becoming a popular tourist destination, attracting more than 20 million visitors in 2017, including 5 million foreigners. The building’s ornate interior might lend itself to an upscale store for tourists, a restaurant, or perhaps a coffee shop to serve the foot traffic along Tverskaya Avenue, which is heavy in normal times.

“Eliseevsky is an extraordinary place, which holds a lot of historical meaning,” says Irina Levina, a Moscow tour guide. “So there need to be some extraordinary decisions taken about what to do with it. It’s hard to imagine the city without it.”

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”
