First-year of the Indian PhD programme is known as Pre-PhD, in this period usually students go through research coursework and other skill development courses essential for their research. After that, the duration of the PhD programme depends on the student and supervisor.

However, PhD programs abroad may take longer, and the duration can vary depending on the field of study, the research topic, and the country of study. Sometimes the duration of an Abroad PhD purely depends on the funding period, which means for how many years the PhD candidate is getting funding for his/her research.

________________________________________________________________________

Thinking of Pursuing Ph.D. Degree Abroad?

You may choose to land up into the United States of America or Europe to shape up your Ph.D. dream into reality. Certainly before doing that you must consider all the pros and cons of making your choice of destination.

Ph.D. in Europe

A common system for university degrees is followed by European Higher Education Area (EHEA) which consists of 28 EU members majorly Austria, Belgium, France, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

The bologna process, an agreement between European countries to ensure compliance with the standards and quality of higher education qualifications was signed in 1999 at the University of Bologna. It follows the basic framework of academic degrees which has been distributed into three cycles which use The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS):

  • Each credit signifies a certain amount of learning hours for a course. A year of study usually carries 60 credits.
  • First Cycle: Award of Bachelor’s degrees with three years with a minimum of 60 credits per academic year (typically 180-240 ECTS)
  • Second cycle Master’s degree with two years with a minimum of 60 credits per academic year (typically 60-120 ECTS)

Pros of Doing a Ph.D. in Europe

  • Ph.D. is recognized across all the countries under EHEA!
  • The biggest advantage of doing Ph.D. from Europe is the doctoral program being a part of the Bologna Process will be considered by all the universities and employers across all the countries of Europe.
  • Invested number of years could be less!
  • The time required to complete a doctoral degree is providentially less in European countries as compared to the USA or in India as Ph.D. programs are shorter.
  • In European countries like Germany, Norway France or the even the United Kingdom, the Ph.D. degree takes three years to complete much shorter than the average span of six years in the US or five years in India.
  • The topic of the thesis! – In European countries, the Ph.D. topic is chosen and is assigned to the individual based on the project snarled to the particular guide he wants to join as research follow. He must write a research proposal with the application for which he must seek advice from the potential supervisor as a topic of research should be from the supervisor’s domain only.
  • No coursework is a privilege! – Candidates aspiring for a Ph.D. program in European countries can initiate their research work from right from the moment they join as they have no or very less course work.
  • Tuitions fee is trivial! – Ph.D. candidates possess the benefit of having a low tuition fee unlike high tuition fee for those pursuing Ph.D. in the US. An average tuition fee for a Non-EU/EEA student is US$ 4,500 – 18,000 per year.
  • Getting Salary simultaneously is an advantage! – Now if one gets an extra penny in his pocket while doing a Ph.D., it is absolutely like a cherry on the cake. In many European countries, work contracts are provided to the candidates during their tenure in research work. They pay into health insurance and even unemployment insurance as employees. Nonetheless, in countries where students don’t get the outlook to work as an employee, they are proficient to apply for university scholarships, research grants, and external fellowships.
  • No pressure of qualifying exams! – If one opts for European Ph.D. program he is waived off any qualifying exam to consummate his work. However, in few countries like Sweden candidates have to appear for oral and written exams after completing half of their Ph.D. tenure.

Cons of pursuing a Ph.D. in Europe

  • Bachelor degrees are not considerable!
  • Not exactly could be considered as a disadvantage but unlike the US, Master’s degree is the minimum requirement to step into European doctoral program.
  • Getting a teaching experience is out of reach!
  • European countries do not offer many privileges to candidates who are interested to obtain teaching opportunity along with research work. Some countries may allow that but then it is not a requirement of Ph.D. curriculum.
PhD in US – The United States of America

Pros of pursuing PhD in the United States

  • Bachelor’s degrees are welcome! – Bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement to obtain a degree from the United States of America for all PhD programs though Master’s degree may be required for certain courses.
  • Undergraduates enjoy an advantage over postgraduates that they may get their master degree while doing Ph.D. only for which they are required to accomplish certain course work or may clear few specified exams.
  • Prospects of having teaching experience! – To take undergraduate lectures as teaching assistants remains part of the Ph.D. curriculum as it is one of the clauses in funding package. Managing tutorials or contributing in preparing exam exams papers to sustain to be part of their course. As a teaching assistant most Ph.D. students are expected to effectuate a semester for one class for a duration of two to three years.
  • You may draw Extra emoluments! – Although tuition fees are high for private American Universities and even in Public universities for international students, the extra-economic aid may be grabbed in the form of five-year funding packages including tuition fee and a monthly stipend.
  • Some universities offer their individual fellowship program to fund PhDs apart from those offered at the state or national level.
  • Teaching may also support the students financially by providing teaching assistantships partially covering the tuition fee.

Cons of pursuing a Ph.D. in the United States

  • Time concern! – For fetching a Ph.D. degree in America one may have to give as long as eight to ten years on maximum with an average of five to six years though. Even students who have completed their masters have to cover the same number of courses as those who are undergraduates only.
  • Ph.D. cost can vary in between 28000$ to 40,000 $ per year although the university one considers brings a difference to this amount.
  • T he topic of the thesis! – In the US, candidates aspiring for Ph.D. need to apply to a department of choice rather than a particular Ph.D. project. Once they get admitted to the department’s Ph.D. program they need to wander in between different labs for a time period of a year or so before they could actually choose their mentor or research project. Thesis topic may get fixed in the third or fourth year of doctoral research.
  • Putting a hand on lots of Course work – Candidates aspiring for American Ph.D. program nonetheless of the previous experience have to varnish two to three years of courses along with seminars within their dissertation domain.
  • Passing the qualifying exams becomes mandatory! – The US has established the criteria for clearing the qualifying exams before commencing with core dissertation work. This is basically done to authenticate the candidate’s knowledge over the discipline chosen for the study. The qualifying exam consists of an oral and written part in addition to an oral presentation of the research topic. Completing the coursework and qualifying exams provide the steering wheel to the Ph.D. main course dissertation work.
  • The dropout rate is distressing! – In the United States alone on an average approximately 40 % of students drop out in different disciplines based on the data obtained by analysis done to find the successful completion of Ph.D. after 10 years of beginning. Maximum students escape in the second or third year of joining. Long-time duration, lack of clear structured support system initially, the burden of the qualifying exam and course studies, disagreement with the mentor, heavy expenses and often unemployment for all those years may lead to Ph.D. attrition.

Too often students with moonstruck eyes dreaming for Ph.D. plunge into the Ph.D. programs in various countries without precisely peeping into what Ph.D. programs in different countries entail. This article – Ph.D. in India vs Europe & will help you to review the advantages and disadvantages of opting India, Europe or America for pursuing Ph.D.

It is rightly said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.

Nevertheless, if you are deciding to invest years into making your dream career alive, it becomes immensely momentous to pick up the step in the right direction.

Choosing a Mentor and University

Obtaining a Ph.D. degree from a foreign university can greatly enhance your career prospects and allow you to make meaningful contributions to your field of study. Many Indian students seek Ph.D. programs at respected universities around the world. After completing a master's degree, a Ph.D. program allows students to delve deeper into their area of interest. Currently, numerous universities worldwide offer a wide range of Ph.D. programs.

Countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and Australia are among the leading destinations for international students seeking Ph.D. programs , provided they have good grades and research experience. However, before applying to a university, there are several steps to consider.

The journey of an overseas Ph.D. program starts with thorough research on the universities in a given nation that provide the specific course combined with their eligibility/entry requirements. You must also keep in mind the deadlines for applying to the degree of your choice and the topic or specialization in which you want to do the doctorate. Proper research of the universities, the facilities, the faculty (in the subject you've selected), and their areas of specialization must be done before deciding on the specialization.

When selecting a supervisor for your research at a university, it is important to carefully consider the supervisor's knowledge and experience in the field of your chosen specialization and ensure that their research interests align with yours. Your potential supervisor should also have experience guiding similar thesis projects and be able to provide support throughout your Ph.D. program.

Keep in mind that established supervisors may receive numerous requests from Ph.D. applicants but can only accept a limited number of students each semester, so it is important to reach out to them formally (via email) to express your interest and reserve a spot.

It is advisable to research the supervisor's academic and research background, the number of students they typically work with, and the level of support they can provide. It is also advisable to follow up with the supervisor regularly and ask relevant questions about your Ph.D. program to help you prepare a strong university application.

Your university application is a crucial document that can determine whether or not you are accepted into the program of your choice. It is important to carefully craft your application to highlight your background, strengths, passions, and aspirations.

In addition to considering the curriculum and your academic accomplishments, you should also think about your future goals and consider what you hope to do after earning your Ph.D. degree. Whether you want to pursue a career in academia, research, or another field, it is important to prepare yourself to meet the requirements of your desired role to succeed in the industry you hope to join.

There are generally some similarities in the process of applying for a Ph.D. program at universities in different countries. However, there may be some differences between the specific documents required and the language proficiency tests that you need to take. For example, some universities may require you to provide transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement, while others may have additional or different requirements.

It is important to carefully review the requirements for each university you are considering and ensure that you have all the necessary documents and meet any language requirements before submitting your application. Similarly, you may need to take a language proficiency test, such as the TOEFL or IELTS , to demonstrate your ability to communicate in the language of instruction at the university.

Whether you need a student visa to study abroad for a Ph.D. program will depend on the country to which you are applying. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, non-EU students may need to apply for a Tier 4 Visa to pursue a full-time Ph.D. program. In Germany, students may need a residence permit rather than a student visa. In the United States, students typically need to apply for an F-1 student visa.

The requirements for obtaining a student visa in Asian countries may vary. For example, in China, you may need an X1 Student Visa, while in Singapore, you may need a Student Pass. It is recommended to check the government website of the specific country you are interested in studying in to learn about the specific requirements for obtaining a student visa or other documentation needed for studying abroad.

If you are thinking about applying for a Ph.D. program abroad from India, it is important to research the specific requirements of the country and university you are applying to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the procedure and what you have to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an international higher education better than studying at a domestic university.

The common notion is that foreign universities are expensive, although with scholarships this is an exaggerated issue. What many fail to consider are time and effort. Studying in an Indian college leads to a lower average salary than earned by our western counterparts. This salary sets the tone for all future promotions since companies often look at your previous salaries during compensation appraisals. Additionally, most senior positions tend to be scooped up by individuals who have an international outlook through global exposure.  Finally, studying in a foreign country is an incredible learning experience helping students get a better academic as well as soft skill development.

Why has Canada become such a popular destination for education?

Canada has been one of the market leaders in education for decades. However, what currently sets Maple Country apart is immigration. Canada is wholeheartedly inviting students to study in their universities to fill job vacancies that are always growing in the country. Students who study in Canada (especially a Master’s Degree) are practically assured of a Permanent Residency Visa.

Is a good entrance test score important for a scholarship?

A good score doesn’t automatically qualify a candidate for a scholarship, however, it is one of the primary factors that the admissions department looks for in a scholarship application. There are other attributes such as a candidate’s academics, extra-curricular, financial background, and application essays (SOPs).

How do I choose the right university for me?

We get this question a lot. Many candidates know which career path they want to take, but are at a loss for how to take that journey. Understanding the job role and the industry that you want to get into is the first step to picking the right university.

Where should i study abroad?

Carefully consider the immigration options of the country that the university that you are considering is in. This is more important when you intend to stay back in the country after the completion of your course.

Also, review the placement history of the university as well.

The first step is to list your preferences. By listing your preferences and strengths, describe your course of preference. Extensive research on the modules, software and its length for your preferred subject is necessary.

What are the eligibility criteria for PhD Abroad?

By dr. sriyash mangal, phd.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Abroad: PhD is a doctorate degree awarded by several universities in different countries. The universities in countries like Germany, the USA, Canada, Switzerland, New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Singapore, UK award PhD degrees in a wide range of programs in the natural sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, statistics, etc.), commerce, business & management, and humanities (e.g., history, psychology, English literature, musicology, etc.). This is not an exhaustive list meaning there are a lot more topics in which PhD degree is offered.

There is one question that pops up in almost every PhD counseling session I take. What are the eligibility criteria for pursuing PhD abroad with full or partial funding? This is a natural question that comes to your mind if you are planning to pursue doctoral research in a foreign country. In this blog article, I will discuss all the parameters that are taken into account by admission/ selection committees of top PhD programs at high-ranking universities.

To get selected in a PhD Program abroad, a student is required to fulfill certain eligibility criteria. Following are the most important requirements or eligibility criteria for PhD abroad:

Academic Grades

As a PhD applicant, you should have good grades in Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. This, however, does not mean that academic score is the most important parameter for the selection committee. It helps to convince them that you have been a brilliant student throughout, but you should not be discouraged to apply if you have an average or below average CGPA. This is because PhD supervisors are looking for prospective students who are passionate about research and have what it takes to be an excellent researcher. So, if you have been an average student at university, then you must present well-written statement of purpose and research proposal showcasing your research abilities.

Previous Research Work

This is undoubtedly one of the most important criteria which is taken in to account by all selection team of all PhD programs abroad. As a PhD applicant you must show in your CV and statement of purpose that you have engaged in research work during the UG and/or PG studies. This includes:

  • internships at universities, research institutes, hospitals, industry
  • bachelor’s and/or master’s thesis
  • workshops for learning latest research methodologies or techniques

Publications, if any

Although publications are not essential to secure a fully-funded PhD position abroad, the prospective supervisor or the admissions committee wants to see that you have the skills required to be an excellent researcher and publications are good indication of this. So, if you have publications, don’t forget to mention them in your CV. And if you do not have publications, then, don’t be discouraged as other things can make up for this. I have written a separate article on this topic and you can read it here .

Also read: Do I Need Publications for PhD Position which is fully funded?

Dissertations and thesis if submitted

All PhD programs abroad will ask you to describe your past research activities with special emphasis on Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis. If you have already submitted your thesis, then you can simply attach the PDF file. If not, then, submit a summary of what you intend to do and the progress you have made till the date of application.

Research Proposal

The research proposal is the most critical part of your Ph.D. application as it will help you showcase your knowledge in the subject. A research proposal should be written in an academic tone and ideas should be expressed in a logical manner. It is important that the research proposal has high degree of coherence and cohesion and an excellent choice of words. Your research proposal should be able to convey to the admissions team that you have thorough knowledge in your area of research and that you have a definite plan which will help you to answer the specific questions you are asking.

A strong Statement of Purpose

All universities ask for a statement of purpose, which is sometimes also called personal statement. In this document, you have to describe why you want to a PhD, how does the qualifications and experience you have gained so far make you a suitable candidate for pursuing a PhD, and why you want to do it in a particular country/ university/ program. To succeed in getting admission in a PhD program, it is important that you submit a strong and convincing statement of purpose. Well-written Statement of Purpose and Research proposal hold so much value that they can even compensate for other lacunas in your academic profile. Therefore, make sure that these two documents are really good before you submit the applications.

Excellent Recommendation Letters

Most of the universities require you to send three letters of recommendation. Your previous academic advisor like the professor who supervised your Master’s thesis should provide one, and other letters can be from teachers, professors or anyone who has supervised your work during internships or full-time work. Letters of Recommendations should discuss your research abilities, logical thinking, level of intellect, knowledge, character and personality. It is easy to say good things about yourself in the statement of purpose, but here you need a past supervisor or a teacher to say excellent things about you and your work. Unlike India, where letter of recommendations are not even required, foreign universities take these letters very seriously. Thus, letters of recommendation hold a lot of weightage when it comes to eligibility requirements for PhD positions abroad.

Test Scores (GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL)

Some of the universities might ask you to write an exam like GRE to assess your skills and knowledge. But it is not mandatory for all the universities and it depends on the country/ university you have chosen. Similarly, PhD programs in Management sometimes ask for GMAT test, but again it depends on the university you have chosen. Results of English language tests such as IELTS or TOEFL are also often asked by many universities especially if English is not your native tongue. Note that you don’t need to have these test results (GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL) in hand before you start the application process. It is actually better to start the PhD application process, shortlist the prospective supervisors, PhD Programs and Universities to gain clarity on what exams are really required and then plan to take the required tests. This will help you to minimize cost as well as save your valuable time.

A CV should have all the information about your education, internships, work experience, publications if any, past achievements & scholarships, voluntary work, co-curricular activities, etc. It should not be longer than 2-3 pages. First thing that the most universities look at is the CV, therefore to make a good first impression, it is important to present your CV nicely.

Note: that eligibility criteria may vary for different universities and fulfilling these criteria does not guarantee admission in a PhD program. Just like you may not get admission in the desired bachelor’s or master’s program even after fulfilling all the eligibility requirements, the final decision to accept or reject applicants lies with the university’s admission department.

Sir, I dont have publications. Am I still eligible to apply for PhD abroad?

Yes, you are. Sir has written an article to address exactly this concern. You can read it here https://roadtoabroad.co.in/publications-for-phd/

Wow! Nice article. I have 10 years of gap and I have not worked in these 10 years. Can I apply through you?

Hi Jaishish. Could you please share your complete academic profile and up-to-date CV with us. We can tell you only after assessing it. Please note that we get hundreds of requests for PhD consultation every week and unfortunately we cannot help everyone. If your profile looks promising to us, then we will definitely help you.

Hello team, I have 2 publications in good journals. Does this mean I will be selected for PhD a 100%?

Hi Jai, Having publications makes your application strong and demonstrate that you are able to do research as well as communicate it. But, they do not guarantee a PhD position. Other documents like Statement of Purpose, Letters of Recommendation, Essays etc are also very important. Besides, your performance in the interview holds a lot of weightage. So, having publications is great and you should take advantage of that in preparing an excellent application.

Do i need a research proposal for US applications?

Hi Ravi, for most universities in USA, research proposal is not required in order to apply for PhD. But, some programs/ professors may ask for it. It is best to check the requirements of the programs you are planning to apply to.

Who should I get LOR from? Professor or employer?

Hi, for PhD applications, you need to submit 2-3 references. We have written a article on this topic and you can read it on https://roadtoabroad.co.in/good-references-for-phd/

Briefly, one academic referee must be there, preferably the one who supervised your master’s thesis. If you have significant work experience, then one should be professional referee.

I don’t have any work experience but have done masters, m i eligible to take admission in phd in UK.

Hi Shastri, sorry for late response. Work experience is not a requirement for applying to PhD positions in the UK or elsewhere. If you have completed a MSc dissertation or have a few months of research experience then you are eligible to apply. If you want to get you profile evaluation done, you can send you CV together with your research interest summary on our email.

  • Gates Cambridge Scholarship for International students

The Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships are six to nine-month fellowships designed for Indian scholars registered for a PhD at an Indian institution. The applicant will be affiliated with one U.S. host institution for his grant, so he should, in advance, identify institutions to be affiliated with and correspond with potential host institutions. The selected scholars can audit non-degree courses, conduct research, and gain practical work experience in the U.S.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend, J-1 visa support, an accident and sickness program, round-trip air travel, applicable allowances, and modest affiliation fees. It does not provide any dependents allowance and is insufficient to support family members. It is intended for PhD students to conduct research essential to their dissertations/thesis, so the candidates should submit the expected PhD thesis at least three months after the Fulbright-Nehru grant end date.

The Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation has supported innovative research and scholarship work for over four decades. Since 2016 the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation has been working with the Cambridge Trust to offer scholarships to Indian students at the PhD level in various academic subjects. Till now, over 350 scholars have benefited from these scholarships. The selection process for the scholarship consists of 2 rounds: shortlisting candidates based on the written evidence submitted and personal or zoom interview with a panel of experts.

The scholarship provides financial support to undertake research at an institution that must be utilized within nine months of being awarded. It provides a travel allowance of up to $1000, monthly maintenance expenses of up to $2000, up to $500 for buying materials, and a health allowance of up to $500.

A donation of $210 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation established the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program. Each year Gates Cambridge offers 55 full-cost scholarships to PhD students outside the UK. The candidates are selected based on exceptional intellectual ability, reasons for choosing the course, a commitment to improving other's lives, and leadership potential.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship provides funding for both core and discretionary components. The core components include University Composition Fee, a maintenance allowance for up to 4 years, return airfare, inbound visa costs &  Immigration Health Surcharge cost. The discretionary components include academic development funding of up to £500 to up to £2,000, family allowance of up to £10,944 for one child and up to £15,612 for two or more children, fieldwork funding, maternity/paternity funding, and hardship funding. Although the scholarship covers most of the costs, it does not cover bench fees or scientific equipment costs, or similar academic resources.

DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) is one of the world’s largest funding organizations for international students. Each year, DAAD supports over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe. The DAAD scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 1,200 Euros as a monthly stipend, travel grant, free accommodation in the university dorms, insurance and health coverage.

An independent selection committee of specialist scientists reviews the applied candidates and selects them based on their qualifications, the quality of the research project, and the applicant's potential. The qualification selection criteria include academic achievements, academic progress, and knowledge of the working language. The quality of research selection criteria includes originality and relevance of the project, feasibility and consistency of the study plan, and incorporation of the project within the overall doctorate. The potential of applicant selection criteria includes career prospects, German language skills, and non-study-related activities.

Imperial College London provides 50 President’s PhD Scholarships to attract candidates that show excellent academic performance and promising research potential. The President’s PhD Scholarships provides full tuition fees, a stipend of £22,900 per annum to assist with living costs, a consumables fund of £2,000 per annum for the first 3 years of study, and access to the full range of support at Imperial. The scholarship is available for both full-time and part-time study.

The President’s PhD Scholarships is a highly competitive scheme and has higher than usual eligibility requirements. The Faculties and College Selection Panel assess the candidates on academic excellence (past academic results, relative class position, awards and distinctions) and research potential (candidate’s research, the research plan and its potential contribution).

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs developed the Eiffel Scholarship Program to assist French higher education institutions in attracting the best international students to PhD programs. French higher education institutions submit the applications for the scholarship, and applications sent directly by students or foreign institutions are declared ineligible.

The Eiffel program is awarded for 12 months in France. It does not cover the tuition fees but provides benefits like a monthly stipend of €1,700, international transportation, national transportation, insurance, housing searches, cultural activities, etc.

The Cambridge Trust offers Cambridge International Scholarships to Indian students for undertaking research leading to a PhD degree at the University of Cambridge. The Cambridge International Scholarships aim to ensure that the highest-scored Indian students receive full financial support to undertake PhD studies. The selection criteria include the candidate's academic qualifications, references, and research potential, not the financial situation.

The Scholarships pay the University Composition Fee and a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single person. If the student receives a full-cost scholarship from any other source (excluding Gates Cambridge and Harding), then he can attend the Trust's events but will not get any monetary value. If the student accepts a Gates Cambridge Scholarship or a Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholarship, then his scholarship will immediately lapse.

phd in india vs phd in abroad

New Delhi:  A ‘credit mapping’ exercise has been undertaken by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), a society that works as a mediator between universities and the government, to analyse academic credits across various countries and understand how they compare to the Indian system.

While it’s a fairly new term in Indian education, academic credits have been awarded by foreign universities — especially in the US, UK and the European Union — for a long time. A credit is a unit award gained by a student by the number of hours put in for a particular course.

For instance, in India, one credit is gained by 15 hours of classroom teaching or 30 hours of laboratory work or 30 hours including self-learning time (and classroom hours).

Credits in India are primarily awarded according to choice-based credit system (CBCS) developed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and launched in 2015.

The aim behind the credit mapping report by AIU, according to officials, is to ease the process of degree equivalence.

At present, a one-year Master’s degree from a foreign university is not valid in India and does not meet the eligibility criteria for PhD enrollment. A Master’s degree in India is typically a two-year course.

With this report, however, AIU plans to make foreign degrees comparable in terms of credit and not the number of years studied, paving the way to make such degrees valid in the country.

“The credit mapping exercise has been undertaken so that we can understand how credits are awarded in various countries and how we can equate them with Indian credits and give validation to foreign degrees,” Pankaj Mittal, secretary-general of AIU, told ThePrint. Mittal was part of the committee, along with various academics, which prepared the credit mapping report.

Report’s findings

Submitted in July, the report, stated, “A common benchmark needs to be developed for comparison of foreign academic degrees with that of India for granting equivalence.”

According to the report, accessed by ThePrint, for technical courses, under the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), 163 credits are required to be completed in 4,920 hours to get a four-year undergraduate degree.

Meanwhile, for three-year undergraduate programmes, approved by the UGC, 148 credits are required to be completed in 4,440 hours for an Honours degree and 132 credits to be completed in 3,960 hours for regular Bachelor’s degree.

Furthermore, the UGC has not laid down a specific number of credits for a postgraduate or a Master’s degree but the average credits required for a PG degree in IITs, NITs and other AICTE-approved colleges is 80.

The report compared the credits in India to those offered in other countries. It found that on average, India asks for about 40 to 49 credits a year (depending on the programme) that have to be completed in 1,200 to 1,400 hours.

In comparison, US universities ask for 30 credits a year in 1,350 hours, EU universities ask for 60 credits in 1,500 to 1,800 hours and universities in the UK seek 120 credits in 1,200 hours a year.

A one-year Master’s programme in the UK requires 180 credits that are completed in 1,800 hours.

After studying the credit system of US, UK, European countries, Australia, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, the committee recommended that “foreign degrees having the same duration of academic program as that of India should be considered for equivalence provided other equivalence parameters are fulfilled”.

The report further noted that a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree awarded by a foreign university, which does not match the course duration in India, could be evaluated on the basis of minimum credits required to complete them.

However, it added, a 10 per cent relaxation in the number of credits could be given while evaluating based on the minimum number of credits.

“The education systems worldwide have undergone significant changes with emphasis on outcome-based learning, and choice-based credit system. The European, American, Australian, Canadian and many other universities in Asia now have provision for early completion of academic program provided the minimum number of credits required by the program are attained,” the committee report said.
