Testimonials.

Amanda has been working with our sons for the past seven years. She has been instrumental in their reading, writing, and oral communication progress. Amanda has helped us advocate for the needs of our sons at school, including meeting with teachers and learning specialists. Her guidance and suggestions have also benefited our sons’ classmates. One of our sons told us, “after working with Amanda for six months, I am not ashamed of reading out loud because I sound like my classmates.” Both of our sons are reading and writing at the level expected for their grades, which would not have been possible without Amanda.

The Art and Craft of Speech Writing

Chris Matthews

Behind every great president, there is a great speechwriter.

Richard Nixon had William Safire; Ronald Reagan had Peggy Noonan; and John F. Kennedy had Ted Sorensen. It is the job of the speechwriter to distill the politician’s thoughts into meaningful sentiments and policy articulations.

Sometimes it’s even the speechwriter’s charge to predict what the politician wants to say. "Political speechwriting is a constant balancing act," said Robert Lehrman, School of Communication adjunct professor and former speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore. “Sometimes there’s no policy until there’s a speechwriter.” In celebration of political speechwriting and in commemoration of Kennedy’s "A Strategy of Peace" speech at AU 50 years ago, SOC is hosting a panel discussion on March 20 , moderated by Chris Matthews, host of NBC’s Hardball . The event is free and open to all students, faculty, staff, AU community, and alumni.

Matthews, a former speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter, is also the author of the biography, Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero .

MORE: The Legacy Of JFK's Speech At AU

The panel, titled "The Art and Craft of Speech Writing: Why the JFK commencement speech at AU lives on 50 years later," will delve into the mechanics of a good political speech. It will also dissect Kennedy’s speech to uncover what made it effective. Panelists will include Lehrman, journalist Marvin Kalb, who covered Kennedy’s AU speech for CBS, and Adam Frankel, former senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama. Frankel also served as an assistant to Sorenen, working with him on his 2008 bestselling memoir Counselor: A Life at the Edge of History . For Sorenson, Kennedy’s American University speech was one of the most important of his career. He was a pacifist who had registered as a conscientious objector and peace was his passion, said Dotty Lynch, SOC executive in residence and organizer of the panel. Because of that passion, Sorensen was able to animate the speech in such a way that its message has persisted.

MEDIA: Books, Films About The JFK Era

"We’ll look at why that speech has lived on when other speeches have not. We’ll try to better understand the background of the speech and see what we can learn about presidential leadership today," Lynch said. During the panel the winner of the speechwriting contest "What Would a JFK Say Now?" will be announced.

FACTS: Did You KNOW? JFK By The Numbers

AU students were asked to answer that question by writing a commencement speech no more than 1,500 words, which outlined what a president should say today on any broad world issue. Submissions were due March 6. The winner will receive a $500 prize.

About the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop

The D.C. Creative Writing Workshop, based in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Southeast D.C., unites parents, teachers and students to create a literary renaissance in this often ignored part of the city.

Since 1995, when Charles Hart Junior High became the first school in Washington to have an extra-curricular creative writing program, the Workshop’s writers-in-residence have introduced thousands of students to the joys of self-expression and the written word, opening for them a world of opportunity that exists outside of the historically neglected area in which they live.

While continuing to serve Hart, now a middle school, the Workshop expanded its programs in 2004 to neighboring Ballou High School and Simon Elementary. Students from these schools and nearby charter schools have attended readings, plays and other literary events, won hundreds of writing awards, and enjoyed a wealth of new experiences not otherwise available to young people in Ward 8.

She has served as a teaching fellow for the KennedyCenter, is a six-time Larry Neal Award winner, won the 2002 Shayne Nonprofit Leadership Award, and was honored as a Local Hero by the Bank of America Foundation in 2011. Schwalb was a founding member of D.C. WritersCorps, and also a co-founder of the D.C. Youth Poetry Slam League. She has four years of experience doing poetry therapy with children, adolescents, and adults at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Additionally, she has completed specialist training in Substance Abuse Prevention (ADASA, Gaston Neal), Mental Health (Biloti Lawrence), Conflict Resolution (United Way), and Violence and Substance Abuse Reduction (Department of Justice).

A Def Poetry Slam Champion, Patrick became a semi-regular performer on HBO Presents Russell Simmons Def Poetry. He is half of the duo POEM-CEES, a musical group that has four full length albums and has been featured in dozens of compilations. Giving the Gift of Reading

Parent Testimonials

"In eight months, the Reading and Learning Center (RLLC) has transformed reading and writing for our son. What had been a source of tremendous frustration and angst -- for everyone in the family -- has become a source of pride and accomplishment. Despite hurdles and barriers thrown up by a global pandemic, technology and all the rest, RLLC has given our son an impressive array of tools and skills to master reading and writing. We are forever thankful, and our son continues to grow and learn with the help of RLLC’s team."

- A Satisfied Parent

"Our teenage daughter was diagnosed with some reading comprehension and auditory processing issues. We were referred to the Reading and Language Learning Center (RLLC) for help. RLLC’s therapists were very professional in our communications, attentive to our issues, and flexible with our schedule. They set up a plan to work with our daughter. Over time, our daughter’s grades improved, her confidence in handling schoolwork independently improved, and she never once complained about attending any of the RLLC sessions. (That says a lot!) From the therapists to the billing department, everything went smoothly.

I would highly recommend RLLC."

A network of local writing groups in Washington D.C.

Capitol Hill Writers Group is a network of local writing groups in Washington, DC.  By connecting writers who are passionate about the craft, CHWG helps form the crucial support you need to keep writing.

Whether you are new to creative writing, getting back into it, or a seasoned author, Capitol Hill Writers Group provides the right amount of structure when you’re balancing full-time employment and a family.

The close-knit community of fiction writers is your sounding board for new work.   Deadlines and accountability help you form writing habits that last throughout your professional career.  Constructive feedback from varied viewpoints enrich your writing, just as your unique perspectives on life and writing contribute to the group.

We are aspiring writers and published authors who embrace all fiction genres.   We provide structure and support through regular meetings, deadlines, and constructive critiques .

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Your Third Place.   A “third place” is that special community outside of home and office that helps a person thrive and feel fulfilled in life.   Creative writers need solitude to produce content but also need a place to help them hone their craft and grow as an artist.   Active participation in a writing group offers that face-to-face contact with other writers that can have an immediate and long-lasting impact on one’s development as a writer.

Balance.   We understand how tricky it is to juggle family, work, and the passion for writing.   Most of our members work full-time and have family obligations.   We share strategies for carving out time for writing while maintaining   balance in life.   We are realistic about deadlines but encourage each other to meet personal writing goals.

Lifelong Learning.   Creative writing involves a continual process of learning.   Members regularly share resources on improving one’s writing, developing professionally as a writer, and navigating the changing landscape of publishing. It doesn’t hurt that we live within walking distance of the world’s largest library.

Structure.   We believe in regular meetings.   While each group decides the day and time for their regular meetings, most groups find that a bi-weekly meeting schedule works quite well for developing a writing routine.

Accountability.   We adhere to deadlines.   The single-most important habit that a writer can develop is meeting deadlines.   Each group creates its own submission calendar that works with members’ other demands in life.

Feedback.   We follow the Clarion Method of critique.   The CHWG founder  attends the first meeting of newly-formed writing groups to give the members an orientation to the Clarion Method as well as tips for ensuring smooth and fruitful meetings.

Productivity. We help your story see the light of day. You know that novel you’ve been thinking about writing for the last few years?   We encourage you to get the story out of your head and onto paper.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Secret power.

Donna Sokol founded Capitol Hill Writers Group in January 2011 after the birth of her second child. The close-to-home group allowed her to pursue her passion for creative writing and find balance in her life.   CHWG participated in the inaugural Literary Hill BookFest in 2011 and has participated in the BookFest annually.   Each year, Donna launches new writing groups, bringing together writers who might not otherwise have met.

Donna began writing creatively as a child; then she went to college, where creative writing was all but beaten out of her.   She picked up the pen again after she swore off pursuits of higher education and has been extremely happy ever since.

Donna served as president of the Board for the Literary Hill BookFest (2016-2018) and led the first monthly fiction book club at East City Bookshop  (2016-2018).

RECRUITMENT SEASONS

Starting January 2021, I will be launching writing groups under the PowerWriters brand via my website, donnasokol.com .

I have three recruitment seasons –Spring, Summer, and Fall–during which I form new writing groups based on the number of interested applicants. After a group forms, consenting members can add new members as needed or desired throughout the year. If you submit an application after the close of a recruitment period, I will hold your application for consideration until the next recruitment period.

To handle the growing membership, I will be orienting new members online. Instead of attending an in-person orientation, writers will receive an invitation to the online orientation , which is a live event you attend via Zoom. You’ll meet your new writing group members at the end of orientation! Soon after, you’ll receive an email from me with all your members’ names and email addresses. You’ll start meeting with your new group about 2 weeks after orientation.

Upcoming Application Deadlines

Please visit the PowerWriters page on donnasokol.com for the latest application deadlines.

speech therapy in Washington DC

 for children and adults.

Providing Speech & Language Therapy Solutions For:

If you or your child has a speech difficulty, count on District Speech to help. Our speech therapists work with people of all ages, helping with a variety of different speech difficulties, including:

Early Intervention

Do you have a child who is showing signs of speech or developmental difficulties? If so, your pediatrician may suggest you take a “wait and see” approach. However, this approach can end up doing a long-term disservice to your child.

The longer a speech or developmental issue goes on, the more work you’ll need to do to dismantle it. Down the line that may include having to involve an occupational therapist or physical therapist. Bring your child in to District Speech and we’ll help you determine the best course of action.

Transgender Vocal Training

For many transgender people, the road to transitioning is a long and challenging one. When it comes to modifying your external appearance to match your identity, few things cause as much dysphoria as one’s voice.

Whether you’re a transgender man, woman, or a non-binary identity, District Speech can help. Your speech therapist will work with you to access your different vocal abilities, teaching you to sound more like how you’ve always felt you should

Stutter Avoidance & Reduction

If you have a stutter, you might find it difficult to get your message across when communicating. This can cause setbacks in your career and personal life, influence your self esteem, and make life more frustrating than it should be. If your stuttering is holding you back from doing what you want to do, it can feel hopeless. But it isn’t.

We’ll uncover the root cause of your stutter, and put together a treatment plan designed to address it. The goal is cleaner, clearer speech, and a less frustrating life.

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders

Have you or your child always had difficulty breathing through your nose? Do you have an overbite, underbite, or another dental abnormality? Do you have trouble closing your lips to swallow, or do you have trouble stopping yourself from drooling? If so, you might have an orofacial myofunctional disorder.

That phrase might seem like a mouthful, but it just means you have abnormal movement patterns in your face or mouth. It can cause a number of issues, but there is help. Alongside other health professionals, a speech therapist can teach you to overcome these issues.

Reading & Learning Impairments

If you have a young child who seems like they’re falling behind in developing speech and language abilities, it’s possible they have a learning or reading impairment. And if you’re an adult who’s always struggled with reading or communicating, you yourself may have one that was never diagnosed.

There is a number of different learning impairment, and you might not always recognize what the signs are in yourself. An untreated learning impairment can cause trouble later in life, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Book an appointment with District Speech – we can help.

Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate

Do you have a newborn baby with a cleft lip or a cleft palate? If so, there are a number of treatments available. A reconstructive surgeon can repair the cosmetic damage, but there’s more to it than that.

Children with cleft lip or cleft palate often face unique speech challenges. District Speech can help. We offer speech therapy services for children with cleft lip or palate. With early intervention, it’s possible for your child to enjoy as much ease in their speech as a child born without this condition.

About District Speech & Language Therapy

Do you have a speech difficulty that’s holding you back from what want to do?

Do you find yourself avoiding certain social or professional situations because you’re embarrassed of your stutter?

Have you found people have difficulty understanding what you’re trying to say?

If so, District Speech can help.

Founded in 2015 by clinically certified speech language pathologist Jennifer Branchini, District Speech works with speech issues from all ages.

“I founded District Speech with the goal of helping people of all ages improve their quality of life,”

says Branchini.

“Improving your effective communication skills can make an incredible difference.”

A speech difficulty can be frustrating and heartbreaking, but you don’t have to suffer alone. People who seek speech therapy come from all walks of life.

Maybe you’re a recent immigrant struggling to be understood by the people in your new home.

Maybe you have an issue with stuttering. Whether it’s a new development or you’ve faced it your entire life, it makes it more difficult to get your ideas across.

Maybe you’re a parent whose child isn’t using words yet, has a cleft palate, a lisp secondary to tongue thrust, reading difficulties or another speech concern.

Or maybe you’re transgender, and feel the sour pinch of gender dysphoria every time you speak.

Whatever it is that’s holding you back, District Speech can help.

We strive to provide the best in evidence-based speech and language therapy services in Washington DC and Arlington VA.

District Speech offers a number of different speech therapy solutions depending on your unique needs.

Speech Therapy For Adults

There are a wide range of different speech concerns adults may face. You may have developed them early in life, or much later. They may manifest themselves in many different ways, but one of the most consistent issues is that of communication and self esteem.

Speech concerns can hold you back from achieving your full potential in your professional and personal life, but there is hope. Contact District Speech to find out more.

Pediatric Speech Therapy

Naturally, every child communicates a little awkwardly at first. It’s part of the process of learning a language. If your child isn’t growing out of it, though, or your doctor has expressed concerns with your child’s speech and language, we can help.

From cleft palate to tongue thrust, dyslexia to auditory processing concerns, speech deficits can impact your child’s self esteem and social development. The speech therapists at District Speech can help.

Pediatric Physical Therapy

Does your baby have a stiff neck that seems to cause them trouble with moving? Is their head beginning to take a strange shape, either flattening or stretching out? Did you give birth to a premature baby and are concerned about the health repercussions they may face?

For these, and many more issues, pediatric physical therapy can help. The pediatric physical therapy treatments offered at District Speech are geared toward addressing the most common pediatric and developmental issues, with the goal of giving your baby the best shot at life.

Occupational Therapy Services

Have you or a family member been diagnosed with autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, or another neurological disorder? Does your child have behavioral issues or are they struggling in school?

Occupational therapy is a unique form of therapy geared toward helping people overcome the barriers that stand in the way of their various occupations in life. The main focus of occupational therapy is to understand the barriers standing in the way of your various occupations, and to either remove them or find a way around them.

Questions About Speech & Language Therapy?

Curious about speech & language therapy? Wondering if it’s right for you? If so, you probably have some questions.

Below, you’ll find some of the more common ones we here. If you don’t find yours below, feel free to reach out and we can help.

Why is speech therapy so important?

For adults, a speech concern can cause issues with self-esteem and social isolation. These are their own problems, but for children it’s even more critical. When a child has a speech condition, it can be difficult for them to make friends in school or develop socially. This can end up with lifelong repercussions. Either way, whether you’re an adult with a speech concern or the parent of a child with one, it can lead to significant struggles in one’s personal and professional life.

Will my child grow out of their speech impediment?

Possibly. Most children have some sort of speech difficulty when first developing their language skills. However, the “wait and see” approach is not a good idea. Research is showing more and more that early intervention in speech and language disorders is critical. To give your child the best chance at a happy, healthy social life, it’s a good idea to enroll them in speech therapy for their speech disorder.

What education do speech therapists have?

In order to practice as a speech therapist, an individual needs to hold at least a master’s degree in their chosen field. District Speech founder Jennifer Branchini holds a master’s degree in communication disorders from the University of Florida.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to see a speech therapist?

No you don’t, but your insurance company may require you to have one in order for them to cover your appointment. Consult with your insurer to find out more.

What if my child’s pediatrician is not concerned about their speech issues?

Most pediatricians don’t have the training or resources to know when to accurately refer to a speech language pathologist. They often recommend that parents “wait and see” until the child grows older. This is where the problem lies. The most crucial time to begin treating a child with speech delays is birth to age 3. If you have concerns but your pediatrician recommends that you wait, call us to get a free phone consultation. We will be able to recommend the best course of action for your child.

Are speech therapists regulated?

Yes, speech therapists in the United States are regulated by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association .

Fine speechwriters have always been misunderstood, and hard to find.

True professional speechwriters are obscured by hordes of willing but less focused and often ill-equipped communication generalists who volunteer to write speeches for leaders without appreciating the specialty or committing to the craft.

Serious speechwriters founded the PSA in 2013 to identify the dedicated practitioners of leadership communication and to elevate their practice and make it better understood—to one another, and to the world.

PSA members support the leaders in the highest levels of corporate, nonprofit, university and political life.

To employers and clients, a PSA membership signals expert seriousness about speechwriting. To other leadership communication professionals, it says: colleague. And most importantly, to the PSA member him- or herself, it says commitment.

So if you’re a professional speechwriter, you know what you need to do.

Benefits of belonging to the Professional Speechwriters Association

PSA offers its members training, recognition, connection and purchasing power.

Among an always-growing list of member benefits:

  • Authorized use of the official PSA membership logo, for placement on websites, résumés and LinkedIn profiles. This tells potential clients and employers that they’re dealing with a committed leadership communication professional.
  • Free 1-year email subscription to Vital Speeches of the Day .
  • Free subscription to the definitive industry newsletter, Executive Communication Report .
  • Exclusive access to an annual membership survey, letting you know where you stand, financially and professionally, among your colleagues—and helping you negotiate with your employer or clients.
  • Easy and exclusive access to other PSA members, through a members-only Facebook group and an exclusive LinkedIn group.
  • A 25% discount to attend the Professional Speechwriters Association World Conference , where dedicated leadership communication professionals meet to share ideas and problems that only fellow pros can understand.
  • A 25% discount for you and any staffers you send to Speechwriting School and Speechwriting School Online , the most comprehensive and convenient speechwriting courses in the world.
  • A 25% discount to the entry fee for the annual Cicero Speechwriting Awards .
  • A 25% discount to Leadership Communication Days, the intimate annual roundtable for executive communication professionals.
  • A 25% discount to 10 Steps to Writing a Great Speech , the definitive guide to professional speechwriting.
  • Free white papers on speechwriting techniques and leadership communication trends.

Other benefits of belonging to the PSA

  • You may assure clients that you work under the PSA’s Speechwriter’s Code of Ethics .
  • You may claim the authority of PSA membership when you share with clients our “Speaker’s Guide to Collaborating with a Speechwriter.”
  • Access to the guidance and mentorship of PSA executive director David Murray and the generous senior speechwriters who make up the PSA’s Advisory Council .

Pragmatic pricing for working professionals

Because speechwriters’ budgets vary as widely as their professional circumstances, the Professional Speechwriters Association sets its annual membership rates accordingly.

$195 for independent speechwriters

$395 for practitioners at nonprofits, universities, government entities and PR agencies

$495 for corporate professionals
