“KGF”, originally made in Kannada and released in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam languages simultaneously, was a box-office phenomenon. The second part “KGF 2” already took the box office by storm with massive advance sales.

The pre-release buzz was on par with “Baahubali 2”. Is the second part worth all the hype? Let’s find out…

Story: ‘KGF 2’ begins with the aftermath of Garuda’s killing. Rocky Bhai (Yash) who created an army of his own in KGF becomes the most powerful man.

Meanwhile, Adheera (Sanjay Dutt) arrives to reclaim KGF. Plus, Inayat Khalil and Prime Minister Ramika Sen (RaveenaTandon) are closing in on him.

Can Rocky deal with these powerful people? What fate is in store for Rocky? Will his girlfriend Reena (Srinidhi Shetty) unite with him?

Artistes’ Performances: Yash who has got terrific swag mesmerizes us again with his style and intense performance. In the first part, he didn’t get a chance to wear designer clothes. Here, as the richest don, he wears colorful suits and grooms himself well. He oozes style in every scene. He gets dialogues that suit his mass persona. His performance is also terrific.

Sanjay Dutt as Adheera is stunning as his getup goes. His imposing personality and his demeanor have suited well to the powerful character. But his role is not that effective for the main antagonist.

Raveena Tandon steals the moments she is in. She has got her look right and has delivered a powerful performance.

Srinidhi Shetty gets a lengthier role than what she was offered earlier. Eeswari Rao makes her presence felt.

Besides Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon, Prakash Raj is the new addition to the world of KGF but didn't get a role worth talking about. Rao Ramesh has a decent role.

Technical Excellence: The action sequences are stunning. Anbriv has come up with adrenaline-rushing episodes this time as well. Ravi Basrur’s background score enhances the overall experience. The cinematography and the production design are grand. But the visual effects are not effective in certain parts.

Drawback: The emotional quotient is not strong

Analysis The first part of “KGF” ended up setting the stage for a showdown between Rocky Bhai and Adheera. In the first part, we didn’t get a full glimpse of Adheera and his face. The real story of Rocky’s rise in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) unfolds in the second part and as we have guessed, we get to see the fight between Rocky Bhai and Adheera.

Director Prashanth Neel doesn’t waste time drawing us into the world he has created in KGF. Like in the first part, the film begins with a journalist interviewing a writer who documented the developments in the Narachi Company. In the second part, Ananth Nag’s son Prakash Raj steps in to narrate the story.

Since we have already seen the story of Rocky from being an assassin to the don of KGF, the focus of the second part is on his problems with the new batch of forces. 

If we see the history of gangster movies, the ‘rise’ of a don always makes an interesting watch, but his ‘rule’ doesn’t. In “KGF 2”, Prasanth Neel has played his game well. There are issues with his narrative, but he holds our interest from start to the finish, as the film is filled with many elevating scenes. He elevates heroism to the peak.

So, the drama involving Rocky and his new batch of nemesis is not as gripping. Despite the presence of big stars like Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon pitching against Yash, the drama is not rousing enough.

Four episodes are the main highlight…

1. After Adheera defeats him, Rocky takes a step back and returns with a bang. The scene of Rocky attacking Adheera again in the backdrop of mines is visually stunning.

2. To get one biscuit of gold, he sets an entire police station on fire with a terrific mass moment (you can also see a glimpse of it in the teaser).

3. The scene of Srinidhi informing Yash about her pregnancy

4. Raveena Tandon’s Burma episode

Besides creating adrenaline-pumping sequences, Prashanth has written terrific dialogues. “Ikkade Talale Maaruthai Keereetalu Kaadu” is a fine example of his smart writing. Like in the first part, he abruptly cuts a scene and brings in a narrator-interviewer scene to further proceed the story, thus saving a lot of runtime.

Prashanth Neel mounts the film on a lavish scale and extracts the best output from his music director, cinematographer, and lead hero.

However, the film has its share of issues. 

Yash entering the parliament hall with his own army is like taking illogicalness to the extreme. The mother-doctor sequence in the final moments is absurd. The Eeshwari Rao-her son’s episode is another forced drama. 

Despite these minor issues and illogical sequences, Neel keeps churning out one cinematically highlighted moment after another.

On the whole, “KGF 2” is a total paisa vasool entertainer. It is a feast to the mass audiences. The film is like a baap of elevations and lives up to the hype. “KGF 2” provides entertainment and gives an immersive experience with mass moments.

KGF: Chapter 2 Review

Testosterone, not rationale, is the driving force behind the KGF franchise, observes Sukanya Verma.

Mindless machismo is the jewel of many a masala movie and blaring background music its birthright.

The louder this combination, the louder audiences are expected to applaud.

Call it a formula, a fallacy or an ingrained belief among film-makers but solo strength triumphing over a battalion of bad guys is a visual that isn't retiring any time soon.

We've had countless avatars of this scenario.

One of them is Writer-Director Prashanth Neel's KGF Chapter 1 , a hyper-stylish concoction of Amitabh Bachchan's angry young man and simply south sensibilities that creates a grimy, greasy, over-the-top world of legends and lore.

Considering the entire saga unfolds out of the pages of a contentious book named El Dorado, its unreliable narrator gives the makers ample license to go bonkers around its wafer-thin plot. And Neel has zero tolerance or taste for restraint.

Three-and-a-half years later, the sequel is equally full-on.

If Chapter 1 of this Kannada blockbuster chronicled the origins story of a young man's rise in ranks from Raja Krishnappa Bairya to 'Rocky' (Yash) in the world of crime against the backdrop of the Kolar gold mines, Chapter 2 glances at his reckless reign and growing enemies.

Though the events take place somewhere between 1978-1981, KGF 's soot-covered world wears a bleak, post-apocalyptic air where Mad Max and Need For Speed collide.

Kohl-eyed women draped in black saris and bearded men of all ages and sizes abound while Rocky makes his swaggering return in an introduction marked by drum rolls on screen and wolf whistles off it.

I watched a 7 am show at a theatre and noticed the Hindi-dubbed print had quite a few takers.

It helps that not all is lost in translation.

The punchlines retain their puffed up threats in dialogues brimming with animal analogies and aggression.

Whatever socialism or saviour of the downtrodden it means to brandish in the awestruck eyes of his endless followers, KGF contradicts those ideals in the rash flamboyance and business-minded ambitions of Rocky's moody messiah.

Rocky lives in the lap of luxury and coffers filled with gold but his loyal subjects look as destitute as ever.

Rocky guns down a police station for the sake of a biscuit that he retrieves anyway without any resistance.

His behaviour is regularly questionable, but KGF 2 is too smitten by its leading man to question his greed, let alone correct him.

It begins early on with regards to his romantic interest (Srinidhi Shetty), whom he abducts and forces to cohabit for 'entertainment'.

Guess even the Stockholm Syndrome is a luxury in its wham-bam scheme of things so the director just miraculously makes her fall in love with her kidnapper and prolongs a cringeworthy subplot's existence for the sake of needless songs.

Often KGF 2 's confused stance towards morality dilutes the impact of its conflicts and makes the bad guy entitled to his misgivings legitimately, as is shown in Rocky's case.

Barring a mother who passed away ordering him to procure wealth and never be at the mercy of the affluent, one never gets a meaty insight into his course of power play.

Rocky doesn't seem as bitter and looks jubilant about enjoying his overwhelming clout over the masses.

Even his detractors gathering evidence to nab him are coloured in hilarious ardour. A CBI officer listing Rocky's transgressions to the prime minister, as if enumerating his tales of valour, is a case in point.

On the positive side, KGF 2 's bleached palette and stark production design is one of its stronger attributes and Neel highlights its impact to the hilt.

The other plus is a cast that puts some muscle on a thin premise and immerses itself wholeheartedly in the overblown daredevilry and defiance of its violence-worshiping protagonists.

Sanjay Dutt plays Adheera -- a Viking-inspired brute whose blood ties with Rocky's former foe and personal humiliation make him charge at our hero like a vile beast.

Full of tattoos, braids and comic-book vigour, Dutt has a blast taking on his debut movie namesake, which coincidentally, released in 1981.

There's Raveena Tandon as fictional Prime Minister Ramika Sen, looking sharp in ikat saris and exuding authority like a veteran politician.

Yash's face-offs with these two are far more effective than any of the elaborate action pieces it dispenses ad infinitum .

Yash has a tricky part to play.

In real time, he's a boorish hero, tiptoeing between style and sass, whose unpredictability and rowdy instincts make him an acquired taste.

In retrospect, he's a larger-than-life figure, deliberately erased from history but whose impossible adventures make him a raconteur's delight.

But his sly humour and unbridled ferocity hits all the right notes.

The upshot would be a lot more refined if not for the excesses of Neel's chaotic screenplay, never-ending climax and badgering background score.

Too often, the intercuts play out like a cacophonous orchestra and render the overall sequence disoriented.

Testosterone, not rationale, is the driving force behind the KGF franchise.

Will it ever slow down? Not if that little tease of KGF: Chapter 3 in its post-end credits is any indication.

While there is a sense of temporary closure in 'KGF: Chapter 1', one also leaves the hall yearning for more. KGF surely seems to have delivered what it set to achieve.

When KGF star Yash said Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero cannot ‘acquire whole country,’ explained how clash with SRK starrer was not intentional

Yash starrer KGF 2 clocked five years of its release today. Not only did the film become one of the highest-grossing Kannada movies ever, but it also outperformed big-budget Bollywood films with its popularity. The film, which released in 2018, clashed with Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero at the box-office. After five years, Hombale films are back with another pan-India film starring Prabhas and Prashanth Neel is all set to go head-to-head with Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki. 

While the Yash-starrer emerged as a blockbuster, Zero failed to make waves at the box-office. Yash had previously opened up about the clash and had said that their decision of releasing the film alongside SRK’s film was not ‘intentional.’ 

The actor said at the trailer launch of KGF, “ I strongly believe there is enough space, one film cannot acquire the whole country. There will be two or three films. Especially for us, since we have five languages, we had to have a date which is suitable for five languages. It is not an intentional thing, but when you have to release with five languages, you need a date which is good with all distributors. But of course, we will have a big competition in Delhi, but it’s ok. I feel if the movie is good, it will have its own strength.”

Yash explained that Hindi films focus on box office numbers, while in the South, a film’s lasting impact matters more. He also noted the strong support South Indian heroes receive, suggesting it surpasses what Bollywood actors typically experience.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Yash had said, “People love me and they have supported me so much. I don’t think any Bollywood actor will enjoy that kind of thing what we enjoy down South. Because that is different. South heroes are treated in a very different way.” When asked if KGF is inspired by Baahubali’s success, the actor said, “ Definitely inspired by Baahubali success. But it is not because SS Rajamouli film had two parts, and we are also making two parts. We wanted to make a big film in our industry.”

The actor had also opened up about the challenges they faced while shooting the film. Recalling one hilarious yet challenging experience, Yash said, “It was very difficult for us to shoot in a particular location. It was not shooting friendly. Extras used to run away from the shoot. Lot of my fans used to come to the sets as extras, but they used to run away after one day. Then finally we hired people to take care of the extras. They were really scared.”

Actor Indresh Malik, known for his role as Ustaad ji on the Netflix series Heeramandi, received praise and a reward of Rs 500 from filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for his moving performance in the 'nath' sequence. The emotional scene, which had no dialogue, left Indresh in tears and howling in joy. Heeramandi, directed by Bhansali, explores the lives of courtesans in undivided India.
