Nakanawa provides an outdoor summer camp experience for girls and young women in communities of cabins around a private, wooded lake. Campers aged 8 to 17 participate in a varied yet structured program of sports and activities to develop skills, broaden interests, build team spirit and have fun with new friends from near and far. Camp Counselor Job Responsibilities:

• Plans, leads, and implements camp programs for children ages 7-17.
• Provides high-quality educational and recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants.
• Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being.
• Facilitates and creates lesson plans for daily activities.
• Organizes and leads various small and large group activities
• Mediates any campers’ disputes.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Camp takes place in a rugged outdoor environment. Counselors should have the physical ability to perform their job duties in this environment. Counselors must live in a rustic camp setting and be able to work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities.
• Counselors must be able to engage in prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing and stretching. Counselors must be able to regularly lift up to 20 pounds.
• Counselors must be able to withstand daily exposure to sun, heat and outdoor conditions including exposure to bugs, snakes, bats, and other animals that live in the wild.
• Counselors must have the visual and auditory ability to see, hear, identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity; manipulate outdoor equipment, record, prepare and communicate appropriate camper activities and programs.
• Counselors must have the physical and mental ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
• Counselors must be able to assist campers in an emergency (severe storms, fire, evacuations, illness or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Work Hours & Benefits

• Camp Nakanawa is a sleepaway, residential camp. Counselors must be prepared to have minimal free time with a daily scheduled off period and a weekly partial or full day off. There are short breaks between each activity period. There is some free time within the camp environs after the campers go to bed at night.
• Counselors that work for both sessions have two (2) nights off between the sessions.
• Four Week Counselors have one (1) overnight time off equaling 24 total hours.
• Special events like family reunions and weddings can be arranged with the Head Counselor and/or Director.

About Francis Parker School:

Francis Parker School is a coeducational independent day school in San Diego, California with 1315 students in grades JK-12. Job Description:

Francis Parker School seeks a qualified Summer Program Camp Counselor to provide direct supervision and oversight in its camp program. This position requires between a 6-8 week commitment (6/24/2024 – 8/2/2024 or 6/24/2024 – 8/16/2024 or 6/24/2024 – 8/23/2024) from 12:00 – 4:30 pm. Some counselors will work in the Extended Program until 5:30 pm. In addition to a mandatory training session on Saturday 6/22/2024. Must be available for onboarding no later than 6/1/24.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Supervise a group of students, promoting a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and all Francis Parker School values.
• Facilitate activities with a group of students
• Uphold, model, and enforce Summer Program policies and procedures.

• Previous experience working with children, specifically in an outdoor camp environment.
• Ability to lead and participate in all activities; no “sitting on the sidelines; a willingness to be a strong team player
• Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate leadership qualities
• Current CPR and First Aid Certification required

Salary and Benefits:

This is an hourly seasonal position (Working hours: Monday – Friday, 12:00 – 4:30 pm), paying $16.85-$17.35/hour. This position is not eligible for benefits.

MDA Summer Camp is a magical place where anything is possible — from swimming to zip-lining and horseback riding to dancing under a disco ball and gaining valuable life skills. Each summer, thousands of kids attend life-changing, overnight camps around the U.S. — at no cost to their families, thanks to our generous supporters. Each summer, hundreds of volunteers serve as counselors and medical staff to help make Summer Camp a safe, fun, and memorable experience. 

 We’d love for you to apply to join us as a volunteer counselor! As an MDA Summer Camp volunteer, you will be by a campers’ sides day and night as you participate in adaptive camp experiences, games, dances, mealtime and more, during the weeklong, overnight program.  Volunteers work with campers, providing around-the-clock care and support with activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, and more. Counselors meet the daily needs of each child and provide emotional support while facilitating friendships and serving as role models.

Requirement Details

A completed application consists of a Reservation submitted via, UltraCamp, as well as:

Signed and dated Physical form (from within the last 12 months)

Copy of the front and back of your insurance card

Copy of your immunization record and COVID-19 Vaccine Card (if separate)

Two completed professional references
