Master of Science in Information Technology Theses

Information Technology (IT) focuses on meeting the needs of users within an organizational and societal context through the selection, creation, application, integration and administration of computing technologies. To succinctly put it - IT uses technology to apply information to meet business needs.

Information Technology is the term used to describe the convergence of computer science, management and information systems. The main distinction between IT and the other computing disciplines (e.g., computer science, software engineering, etc.) is that IT professionals must know how to apply computing technology and to build a business case for that application. It emphasizes the management and performance of information technology planning, development, implementation and operation, and development of the infrastructure to support the processes necessary to achieve organizational objectives.

The Masters of Science in Information Technology degree is designed to enhance career options for a broad mix of students. The program is geared for those students interested in pursuing a career in the management and performance of information systems planning, development, implementation and operation.

This collection was started with the graduates of the Fall 2015 semester, after the consolidation between Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University was final (July 2015).

proposal thesis for information technology

Thesis Proposal

In the thesis proposal, the PhD or DES student lays out an intended course of research for the dissertation.  By accepting the thesis proposal, the student’s dissertation proposal committee agrees that the proposal is practicable and acceptable, that its plan and prospectus are satisfactory, and that the candidate is competent in the knowledge and techniques required, and formally recommends that the candidate proceed according to the prospectus and under the supervision of the dissertation committee. It is part of the training of the student’s research apprenticeship that the form of this proposal must be as concise as those proposals required by major funding agencies.

The student proposes to a committee consisting of the student’s advisor and two other researchers who meet requirements for dissertation committee membership.  The advisor should solicit the prospective committee members, not the student. In cases where the research and departmental advisors are different , both must serve on the committee.

The student prepares a proposal document that consists of a core, plus any optional appendices. The core is limited to 30 pages (e.g., 12 point font, single spacing, 1 inch margins all around), and should contain sections describing 1) the problem and its background, 2) the innovative claims of the proposed work and its relation to existing work, 3) a description of at least one initial result that is mature enough to be able to be written up for submission to a conference, and 4) a plan for completion of the research. The committee commits to read and respond to the core, but reserves the right to refuse a document whose core exceeds the page limit. The student cannot assume that the committee will read or respond to any additional appendices.

The complete doctoral thesis proposal document must be disseminated to the entire dissertation committee no later than two weeks (14 days) prior to the proposal presentation. The PhD Program Administrator must be informed of the scheduling of the proposal presentation no later than two weeks (14 days) prior to the presentation. Emergency exceptions to either of these deadlines can be granted by the Director of Graduate Studies or the Department Chair on appeal by the advisor and agreement of the committee.

A latex thesis proposal template is available here .

PRESENTATION AND FEEDBACK

The student presents the proposal in a prepared talk of 45 minutes to the committee, and responds to any questions and feedback by the committee.

The student’s advisor, upon approval of the full faculty, establishes the target semester by which the thesis proposal must be successfully completed. The target semester must be no later than the eighth semester, and the student must be informed of the target semester no later than the sixth semester.

The candidacy   exam  must be successfully completed  before  the  proposal can be attempted.  The proposal must be completed prior to submitting the application for defense. [Instituted by full faculty vote September 16, 2015.]

Passing or failing is determined by consensus of the committee, who then sign the dissertation proposal form (sent to advisors by phd-advising@cs.  Failure to pass the thesis proposal by the end of the target semester or the eighth semester, whichever comes first, is deemed unsatisfactory progress: the PhD or DES student is normally placed on probation and can be immediately dismissed from the program. However, on appeal of the student’s advisor, one semester’s grace can be granted by the full faculty.

Press mentions, dean boyce's statement on amicus brief filed by president bollinger.

President Bollinger announced that Columbia University along with many other academic institutions (sixteen, including all Ivy League universities) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York challenging the Executive Order regarding immigrants from seven designated countries and refugees. Among other things, the brief asserts that “safety and security concerns can be addressed in a manner that is consistent with the values America has always stood for, including the free flow of ideas and people across borders and the welcoming of immigrants to our universities.”

This recent action provides a moment for us to collectively reflect on our community within Columbia Engineering and the importance of our commitment to maintaining an open and welcoming community for all students, faculty, researchers and administrative staff. As a School of Engineering and Applied Science, we are fortunate to attract students and faculty from diverse backgrounds, from across the country, and from around the world. It is a great benefit to be able to gather engineers and scientists of so many different perspectives and talents – all with a commitment to learning, a focus on pushing the frontiers of knowledge and discovery, and with a passion for translating our work to impact humanity.

I am proud of our community, and wish to take this opportunity to reinforce our collective commitment to maintaining an open and collegial environment. We are fortunate to have the privilege to learn from one another, and to study, work, and live together in such a dynamic and vibrant place as Columbia.

pls addmin help me i downloaded vb program here but cant run it i only knows php, pls i hv vb2008 installed what do i need to do. help me what wil do start befor i can run it

You will have to save the project source folder in your document’s directory where Visual Studio keeps its project and other important access files. Just follow this directory: C:users/your_account_name/documents/visual studio 2008/VB/projects

Then you can run the .sln file from the folder to invoke the Visual Studio environment for Visual basic and you can then run the program.

Micaiah Smith-Pierce

(Advisor: Prof. Ruffin)

will propose a doctoral thesis entitled,

An Automated Approach to CFD with Cartesian-Grid-Based Meshing and a Discontinuous Galerkin Solver

Thursday, May 2 at 10:00 a.m.

Montgomery Knight Building 317

This work concerns automating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, a key challenge in aerospace engineering. CFD is currently the highest-fidelity means of predicting many quantities that are critical to aerospace design, such as drag on aircraft and atmospheric entry heating on spacecraft. The importance and complexity of CFD simulations in aerospace engineering is growing, increasing the pressure to provide rapid and reliable results. However, CFD continues to require a substantial amount of time from a human user, especially in the meshing and post-processing phases, and the results are strongly dependent on the user's skill. This work aims to reduce user workload in both of these phases and improve repeatability by coupling a robustly automated Cartesian-grid-based meshing scheme with a reliably accurate high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solver. The Cartesian-grid-based approach has previously been developed for automated all-hex meshing. This work extends it to achieve robustness to faults in the input geometry and direct support for high-order curved meshes. The high-order DG solver complements this by providing very high accuracy and reduced mesh sensitivity, mitigating quality issues associated with Cartesian-grid-based meshing. To make DG viable in practice, this work proposes more efficient explicit time integration schemes as well as a novel shock capturing method. This method, referred to as discretization-independent artificial viscosity, eliminates nonphysical oscillations and achieves mesh convergence, which popular existing schemes fail to do. Meshing tests involving two- and three-dimensional geometry demonstrate good resolution distribution and element quality comparable to industry-standard unstructured mesh generators. Accurate flow solutions are demonstrated across a range of flight conditions, from subsonic to hypersonic, including smooth aerodynamic heating results. Furthermore, preliminary performance benchmarking shows promise that the solver can provide speed competitive with industry-standard solvers.

The Impact of Quantum Information Science and Technology on National Security

Quantum information science and technology has been at the forefront of science and technology since MIT mathematician Peter Shor discovered a quantum algorithm to factor large numbers in 1994. Advancement in quantum theory also advances practical technological applications. Quantum technology can be applied both in civilian society and the military field from encryption, artificial intelligence, sensing, to communications. This multi-purpose applicability, therefore, has the potential to alter international security as scientifically advanced nation-states vie for quantum supremacy. This research examines the applications of quantum science and how these applications can potentially impact international security. Because nation-states fund and support quantum science research, sources of method will include academic journals and online resources as well as government reports. Practical applications of quantum technology, including quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communication, will constitute the primary scope of this research.

Deepfakes in the courtroom: us judicial panel debates new ai evidence rules, panel of eight judges confronts deep-faking ai tech that may undermine legal trials..

Benj Edwards - Apr 24, 2024 8:14 pm UTC

An illustration of a man with a very long nose holding up the scales of justice.

On Friday, a federal judicial panel convened in Washington, DC, to discuss the challenges of policing AI-generated evidence in court trials, according to a Reuters report . The US Judicial Conference's Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules , an eight-member panel responsible for drafting evidence-related amendments to the Federal Rules of Evidence , heard from computer scientists and academics about the potential risks of AI being used to manipulate images and videos or create deepfakes that could disrupt a trial.

Further Reading

The meeting took place amid broader efforts by federal and state courts nationwide to address the rise of generative AI models (such as those that power OpenAI's ChatGPT or Stability AI's Stable Diffusion ), which can be trained on large datasets with the aim of producing realistic text, images, audio, or videos.

In the published 358-page agenda for the meeting, the committee offers up this definition of a deepfake and the problems AI-generated media may pose in legal trials:

A deepfake is an inauthentic audiovisual presentation prepared by software programs using artificial intelligence. Of course, photos and videos have always been subject to forgery, but developments in AI make deepfakes much more difficult to detect. Software for creating deepfakes is already freely available online and fairly easy for anyone to use. As the software’s usability and the videos’ apparent genuineness keep improving over time, it will become harder for computer systems, much less lay jurors, to tell real from fake.

During Friday's three-hour hearing, the panel wrestled with the question of whether existing rules, which predate the rise of generative AI, are sufficient to ensure the reliability and authenticity of evidence presented in court.

Some judges on the panel, such as US Circuit Judge Richard Sullivan and US District Judge Valerie Caproni, reportedly expressed skepticism about the urgency of the issue, noting that there have been few instances so far of judges being asked to exclude AI-generated evidence.

"I'm not sure that this is the crisis that it's been painted as, and I'm not sure that judges don't have the tools already to deal with this," said Judge Sullivan, as quoted by Reuters.

Last year, Chief US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts acknowledged the potential benefits of AI for litigants and judges, while emphasizing the need for the judiciary to consider its proper uses in litigation. US District Judge Patrick Schiltz, the evidence committee's chair, said that determining how the judiciary can best react to AI is one of Roberts' priorities.

In Friday's meeting, the committee considered several deepfake-related rule changes. In the agenda for the meeting, US District Judge Paul Grimm and attorney Maura Grossman proposed modifying Federal Rule 901(b)(9) (see page 5), which involves authenticating or identifying evidence. They also recommended the addition of a new rule, 901(c), which might read:

901(c): Potentially Fabricated or Altered Electronic Evidence. If a party challenging the authenticity of computer-generated or other electronic evidence demonstrates to the court that it is more likely than not either fabricated, or altered in whole or in part, the evidence is admissible only if the proponent demonstrates that its probative value outweighs its prejudicial effect on the party challenging the evidence.

The panel agreed during the meeting that this proposal to address concerns about litigants challenging evidence as deepfakes did not work as written and that it will be reworked before being reconsidered later.

Another proposal by Andrea Roth , a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, suggested subjecting machine-generated evidence to the same reliability requirements as expert witnesses. However, Judge Schiltz cautioned that such a rule could hamper prosecutions by allowing defense lawyers to challenge any digital evidence without establishing a reason to question it.

For now, no definitive rule changes have been made, and the process continues. But we're witnessing the first steps of how the US justice system will adapt to an entirely new class of media-generating technology.

Putting aside risks from AI-generated evidence, generative AI has led to embarrassing moments for lawyers in court over the past two years. In May 2023, US lawyer Steven Schwartz of the firm Levidow, Levidow, & Oberman apologized to a judge for using ChatGPT to help write court filings that inaccurately cited six nonexistent cases , leading to serious questions about the reliability of AI in legal research. Also, in November, a lawyer for Michael Cohen cited three fake cases that were potentially influenced by a confabulating AI assistant.

  • The bill supports manufacturing of key technologies needed for EU’s climate and energy objectives
  • Faster permitting procedures and establishing net-zero industry valleys
  • New criteria for public procurement procedures, auctions for renewable energy sources

On Thursday, Parliament approved the Net-Zero industry Act to bolster EU production in technologies needed for decarbonisation.

The "Net-Zero industry Act", already informally agreed upon with the Council, sets a target for Europe to produce 40% of its annual deployment needs in net-zero technologies by 2030, based on National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and to capture 15% of the global market value for these technologies.

Technologies to be supported include all renewable technologies, nuclear, industrial decarbonisation, grid, energy storage technologies, and biotech. The law will simplify the permitting process, setting maximum timelines for projects to be authorised depending on their scope and output.

The agreement provides for the creation of "Net-Zero Acceleration Valleys" initiatives, speeding up the permitting process by delegating parts of the evidence collection for environmental assessments to member states.

Sustainability and resilience criteria

National support schemes aiming to get households and consumers to move over to technologies such as solar panels and heat pumps more quickly will have to take into account sustainability and resilience criteria. Public procurement procedures and auctions to deploy renewable energy sources should also meet such criteria, albeit under conditions to be defined by the Commission, and for a minimum of 30% of the volume auctioned per year in the member state, or alternatively for a maximum of six Gigawatt auctioned per year and per country.

The legislation will encourage funding from national Emission Trading System (ETS) revenues and for most strategic projects through the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP), and it is a step towards a European Sovereignty fund.

“This vote is good news for European industry and sets the tone for the next term. To achieve all our economic, climate and energy ambitions, we need industry in Europe. This Act is the first step to making our market fit for this purpose”, said lead MEP Christian Ehler (EPP, DE) .

The legislation was adopted with 361 votes to 121, with 45 abstentions. It will now have to be formally adopted by Council in order to become law.

A considerable amount of clean energy technology is needed to support reaching Europe’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets. Europe largely imports these technologies, and many non-EU countries have stepped up their efforts to expand their clean energy manufacturing capacity.

Conference on the future of Europe

The "Net Zero Industry Act" aligns with the conclusions of the Conference on the Future of Europe through several key proposals and measures.. Specifically, the Act reflects Proposal 3 (measures 1, 3, 5, 6), Proposal 11 (measure 1), Proposal 12 (measure 5), Proposal 17 (measure 1), and Proposal 18 (measure 2), which collectively aim to foster a sustainable, resilient, and independent energy framework within the EU.

Congress Passed a Bill That Could Ban TikTok. Now Comes the Hard Part.

President Biden has signed the bill to force a sale of the video app or ban it. Now the law faces court challenges, a shortage of qualified buyers and Beijing’s hostility.

A crowd of people, all holding signs that support TikTok.

By Sapna Maheshwari and David McCabe

Sapna Maheshwari reported from New York, and David McCabe from Washington.

A bill that would force a sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner, ByteDance — or ban it outright — was passed by the Senate on Tuesday and signed into law Wednesday by President Biden.

Now the process is likely to get even more complicated.

Congress passed the measure citing national security concerns because of TikTok’s Chinese ties. Both lawmakers and security experts have said there are risks that the Chinese government could lean on ByteDance for access to sensitive data belonging to its 170 million U.S. users or to spread propaganda.

The law would allow TikTok to continue to operate in the United States if ByteDance sold it within 270 days, or about nine months, a time frame that the president could extend to a year.

The measure is likely to face legal challenges, as well as possible resistance from Beijing, which could block the sale or export of the technology. It’s also unclear who has the resources to buy TikTok, since it will carry a hefty price tag.

The issue could take months or even years to settle, during which the app would probably continue to function for U.S. consumers.

“It’s going to be a royal mess,” said Anupam Chander, a visiting scholar at the Institute for Rebooting Social Media at Harvard and an expert on the global regulation of new technologies.

TikTok pledged to challenge the law. “Rest assured, we aren’t going anywhere,” its chief executive, Shou Chew, said in a video posted to the platform. “We are confident, and we will keep fighting for your rights in the courts.”

Here’s what to expect next.

TikTok’s Day in Court

TikTok is likely to start by challenging the measure in the courts.

“I think that’s the one certainty: There will be litigation,” said Jeff Kosseff, an associate professor of cybersecurity law at the Naval Academy.

TikTok’s case will probably lean on the First Amendment, legal experts said. The company is expected to argue that a forced sale could violate its users’ free speech rights because a new owner could change the app’s content policies and reshape what users are able to freely share on the platform.

“Thankfully, we have a Constitution in this country, and people’s First Amendment rights are very important,” Michael Beckerman, TikTok’s vice president of public policy, said in an interview with a creator on the platform last week. “We’ll continue to fight for you and all the other users on TikTok.”

Other groups, like the American Civil Liberties Union, which has been a vocal opponent of the bill, may also join the legal fight. A spokeswoman for the A.C.L.U. said on Tuesday that the group was still weighing its role in potential litigation challenging the law.

The government will probably need to make a strong case that ByteDance’s ownership of TikTok makes it necessary to limit speech because of national security concerns, the legal experts said.

TikTok already has a strong record in similar First Amendment battles. When he was president, Donald J. Trump tried to force a sale or ban of the app in 2020, but federal judges blocked the effort because it would have had the effect of shutting down a “platform for expressive activity.” Montana tried to ban TikTok in the state last year because of the app’s Chinese ownership, but a different federal judge ruled against the state law for similar reasons.

Only one narrower TikTok restriction has survived a court challenge. The governor of Texas announced a ban of the app on state government devices and networks in 2022 because of its Chinese ownership and related data privacy concerns. Professors at public universities challenged the ban in court last year, saying it blocked them from doing research on the app. A federal judge upheld the state ban in December, finding it was a “reasonable restriction” in light of Texas’ concerns and the narrow scope affecting only state employees.

Small Buyer Pool

Analysts estimate that the price for the U.S. portion of TikTok could be tens of billions of dollars.

ByteDance itself is one of the world’s most valuable start-ups , with an estimated worth of $225 billion, according to CB Insights, a firm that tracks venture capital and start-ups.

The steep price tag would limit the list of who could afford TikTok. Tech giants like Meta or Google would probably be blocked from an acquisition because of antitrust concerns.

Private equity firms or other investors could form a group to raise enough money to buy TikTok. Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in March that he wanted to build such a group. And anyone who can pony up the money still has to pass muster with the U.S. government, which needs to sign off on any purchase.

Few others have expressed public interest in buying the app.

The last time the government tried to force ByteDance to sell TikTok in 2020, the company held talks with Microsoft and the software company Oracle. (Oracle and Walmart ultimately appeared to reach an agreement with ByteDance, but the deal never materialized .)

A Complicated Divestment

Even if TikTok approaches a sale, the process of separating TikTok from ByteDance is likely to be messy.

The legislation prohibits any connection between ByteDance and TikTok after a sale. Yet TikTok employees use ByteDance software in their communications, and the company’s employees are global, with executives in Singapore, Dublin, Los Angeles and Mountain View, Calif.

It’s unclear if ByteDance would consider selling TikTok’s entire global footprint or just its U.S. operations, where the company has nearly 7,000 employees.

Breaking off just the U.S. portion of TikTok could prove particularly challenging. The app's recommendation algorithm, which figures out what users like and serves up content, is key to the success of the app. But Chinese engineers work on that algorithm, which ByteDance owns.

During Mr. Trump’s attempt to force a sale in 2020, the Chinese government issued export restrictions that appeared to require its regulators to grant permission before ByteDance algorithms could be sold or licensed to outsiders.

The uncertainty around the export of the algorithm and other ByteDance technology could also deter interested buyers.

China’s Unpredictable Role

The Chinese government could also try to block a TikTok sale.

Chinese officials criticized a similar bill after the House passed it in March, although they have not yet said whether they would block a divestment. About a year ago, China’s commerce ministry said it would “firmly oppose” a sale of the app by ByteDance.

Chinese export regulations appear to cover TikTok’s content recommendation algorithm, giving Beijing a say in whether ByteDance could sell or license the app’s most valuable feature.

It “is not a foregone conclusion by any means” that China will allow a sale, said Lindsay Gorman, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund who specializes in emerging tech and China.

China may retaliate against American companies. On Friday, China’s Cyberspace Administration asked Apple to remove Meta’s WhatsApp and Threads from its App Store, according to the iPhone manufacturer. The Chinese government cited national security reasons in making the demand.
