Indian Accounting Review

Published by :, indian accounting association research foundation, issn: 0972-1754, about indian accounting review.

Indian Accounting Review (IAR) is an international, peer-reviewed and bi-annual journal, published in June and December respectively in each year since 1997, by the Indian Accounting Association Research Foundation (also known as IAA Research Foundation). IAR was enlisted by UGC (Journal No. 46893) in all the three categories viz. Accounting, Finance and Business & Management up to June 13, 2019 (before publication of UGC-CARE list). Now, IAR is under review for UGC-CARE list. The Impact Factor of IAR is given below.

(GIF: 2019): 2.8229 (GIF: 2017): 2.7342

Ownership and Management

The Indian Accounting Association (IAA) Research Foundation, a forum of accounting educators, professional accountants and others, was founded during 1989-90 under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961 (Regn. No. S/63876), the principal objective being promotion of accounting, education and research in India and abroad. As a Secretary of the IAA Research Foundation, Dr. Bhabatosh Banerjee, based on the need for publication of a high quality refereed research journal in Accounting in India, submitted a proposal for publication of Indian Accounting Review (IAR), a bi-annual, research journal, in June and December each year. It was approved by the Executive Committee of the Research Foundation and Dr B. Banerjee was appointed as the Editor of IAR. The first issue of IAR was published in January, 1997 (ISSN 0972-1754), funded by the Research Foundation. The ownership was vested on the Research Foundation and the entire cost of publication and distribution was borne by the Research Foundation. Dr. Banerjee started publication of IAR from the Department of Commerce, University of Calcutta (as its Working Office) and also editing manuscripts and supervising the publication work from his residence at 164/78 Lake Gardens, Kolkata-700 045. He was given complete freedom for the purpose, of course, within the overall Policy of the Foundation. The journal is distributed free to the life members of the Foundation. There are also a large number of annual and permanent institutional subscribers. The Editorial Board comprises a large number of erudite scholars across the globe having suitable experience in the matter. Dr. Banerjee is now the Consulting Editor and Prof. Dhrubaranjan Dandapat of the University of Calcutta has been working as Editor since 2017. Publishing, circulating, distributing and effectively running a good quality blind peer reviewed methodical journal is not an easy task. Long-run sustainability of a journal will rely on high-quality manuscripts, energetic editorial board members, high-quality reviewers, effective business model to ensure monetary support, better visibility that ensure enhanced submissions, indexation in different significant databases and accessible website. The difficulties associated with running a flourishing journal are also associated with the ownership of the publication. The Indian Accounting Association Research Foundation has created an Endowment Fund for publication and distribution of the Journal. Nevertheless, while assuring monetary support, Indian Accounting Association Research Foundation ensures that the Editor has sufficient autonomy to get usual decisions associated with the journal that are very significant. There have been wonderful expansions in ICT during the last 20 years which on one hand has made the editors’ job simple but simultaneously it has put the Board under a lot of pressure. It is not easy for the Editors to satisfy the expectations of the authors and others who are mostly intolerant and desire to get their manuscripts in print at the earliest. However, Indian Accounting Association Research Foundation has never compromised with the quality of its Journal, Indian Accounting Review, and the authors are always insisted on revising the manuscripts complying with the reviewers’ comments to the satisfaction of the Editors for its publication 15.07.2020

Aim and scope

The journal seeks to publish high-quality research-oriented and original articles on both fundamental and empirical research papers in the field of accounting and finance. In addition, it invites papers regarding application of theory to real life situations, where the findings would be of interest of researchers, academics and professionals. IAR publishes manuscripts from areas, such as, accounting, accounting education, accounting standard, financial reporting, corporate finance, behavioural finance, international accounting and finance, financial markets, financial management, risk management, human resource management and related areas.

IAR is a refereed international journal. It follows “Blind Peer Review Process”. The main principle for publication in Indian Accounting Review is the importance of the contribution a paper creates to the literature. Contemporary areas of interest to the journal in the field of accounting and finance are very much welcome. The journal is furthermore open to all exact research methods. The effectiveness and usefulness of the editorial review procedure is crucially reliant upon the acts of both the authors submitting papers and the reviewers. The review process is not to be used as a means of getting advice at premature stages of developing the research. Both reviewers and editors are accountable for giving useful and timely evaluations of submitted articles on the basis of the implication of their contribution along with the rigour of analysis and presentation.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts should be prepared using the APA Style Guide (Seventh Edition). All pages must be typed, double-spaced (including references, footnotes, and endnotes). Text must be in 12-point Times Roman. Block quotes may be single-spaced. Papers must include margins of 1 inch on all four sides with pages numbered sequentially.

The manuscript should include four major sections (in this order): Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, and References.

Sections in a manuscript may include the following (in this order): (1) Title page, (2) Abstract, (3) Keywords, (4) Text, (5) Notes, (6) References, (7) Tables, (8) Figures, and (9) Appendices.

1. Title page. Please include the following:

  • Full article title
  • Acknowledgments and credits
  • Each author’s complete name and institutional affiliation(s)
  • Each author's short bio (approx. 50 to 100 words)
  • Grant numbers and/or funding information
  • Corresponding author (name, address, phone/fax, e-mail)

2. Abstract. Print the abstract (150 to 250 words) on a separate page headed by the full article title. Omit author(s)’s names.

3. Text. Begin article text on a new page headed by the full article title.

a. Headings and subheadings. Subheadings should indicate the organization of the content of the manuscript. Generally, three heading levels are sufficient to organize text. Level 1 heading should be Centered, Boldface, Upper & Lowercase, Level 2 heading should be Flush Left, Boldface, Upper & Lowercase, Level 3 heading should be Indented, boldface, lowercase paragraph heading that ends with a period, Level 4 heading should be Indented, boldface, italicized, lowercase paragraph heading that ends with a period , and Level 5 heading should be Indented, italicized, lowercase paragraph heading that ends with a period .

b. Citations. For each text citation, there must be a corresponding citation in the reference list and for each reference list citation, there must be a corresponding text citation. Each corresponding citation must have identical spelling and year. Each text citation must include at least two pieces of information, author(s), and year of publication. Following are some examples of text citations:

  • Unknown Author : To cite works that do not have an author, cite the source by its title in the signal phrase or use the first word or two in the parentheses. E.g., The findings are based on the study was done of students learning to format research papers ("Using XXX," 2001)
  • Authors with the Same Last Name : use first initials with the last names to prevent confusion. E.g. (L. Hughes, 2001; P. Hughes, 1998)
  • Two or More Works by the Same Author in the Same Year : For two sources by the same author in the same year, use lower-case letters (a, b, c) with the year to order the entries in the reference list. The lower-case letters should follow the year in the in-text citation. E.g., Research by Freud (1981a) illustrated that…
  • P ersonal Communication : For letters, e-mails, interviews, and other person-to-person communication, the citation should include the communicator's name, the fact that it was personal communication, and the date of the communication. Do not include personal communication in the reference list. E.g. (E. Clark, personal communication, January 4, 2009).
  • Unknown Author and Unknown Date : For citations with no author or date, use the title in the signal phrase or the first word or two of the title in the parentheses and use the abbreviation "n.d." (for "no date"). E.g., The study conducted by students and research division discovered that students succeeded with tutoring ("Tutoring and APA," n.d.).

4. Notes. If explanatory notes are required for your manuscript, insert a number formatted in superscript following almost any punctuation mark. Footnote numbers should not follow dashes (—), and if they appear in a sentence in parentheses, the footnote number should be inserted within the parentheses. The Footnotes should be added at the bottom of the page after the references. The word “Footnotes” should be centered at the top of the page.

5. References. Basic rules for the reference list:

  • The reference list should be arranged in alphabetical order according to the authors’ last names.
  • If there is more than one work by the same author, order them according to their publication date – oldest to newest (therefore a 2008 publication would appear before a 2009 publication).
  • When listing multiple authors of a source use “&” instead of “and”.
  • Capitalize only the first word of the title and of the subtitle, if there are one, and any proper names – i. e. only those words that are normally capitalized.
  • Italicize the title of the book, the title of the journal/serial and the title of the web document.
  • Every citation in text must have the detailed reference in the Reference section.
  • Every reference listed in the Reference section must be cited in text.
  • Do not use “et al.” in the Reference list at the end; names of all authors of a publication should be listed there.
  • Here are a few examples of commonly found references. For more examples please check APA (most recent edition).

India Talent Trends in Finance 2023

Professional accountants – the future, evelyn isioye.

  • Professional insights

This first-of-its-kind survey of accountancy and finance professionals in India, reveals that Indian accountants are set to embrace the future with a modern outlook on the world of work

Businessman standing in an office and smiling with crossed arms

With 65% of India’s 1.4bn population being under 35 years of age, the nation is home to the world’s largest population of Gen Z and millennials. This significant demography was well represented by 66% of our respondents from India, as we asked professionals across all sectors of the finance and accountancy industry about their work-related concerns and future aspirations.

In assessing key workplace views about well-being, technology adoption and learning needs, among others, the uniqueness of India’s population dynamics is seen to significantly shape the trends in India which differ from those in the rest of the world.

Global trends captured show a profession in workplace transition. In India, this survey currently depicts a profession rapidly evolving as it embraces the future of work. Nuanced by the dynamic priorities of a largely young population, there are five key trends in India’s accountancy and finance talent pool, which this report captures by drawing from a combination of expert views and a country-specific subset of ACCA’s global survey.

1. Well-being is a key priority

An emphasis on well-being and mental health is equally critical to both the attractiveness of the profession and the attractiveness of an organisation to finance talents in India.

2. Technology is empowering but concerns prevail

Technology continues to drive productivity, but concerns are looming about the rapid pace of advancement and its capacity to replace jobs in the industry.

3. Hybrid work opportunities are crucial

Hybrid work opportunities are no longer a luxury. Organisations will not only need to find the right type of hybrid arrangement, but also develop the managerial skills needed to maximise its benefits.

4. Empowering skills drives satisfaction

Finance talents are more than ever keen on upskilling and reskilling for realising both workplace satisfaction and professional fulfilment.

5. A more mobile profession is imminent

Mobility in the profession is on the rise and finance talents are moving in the direction of value. Work opportunities that provide more ways of adding value and being valued in return will attract and retain the best talents.

Dissertation Topics in Finance- MBA, Banking, Accounting Projects-04 (1)

Also known as the study of investments, Finance is a combination of two interrelated subjects – how money is handled and the process of obtaining money. One of the reasons why postgraduate students struggle with their Finance dissertation topics is that they do not spend enough time planning it. It is important for students to be extremely careful while writing a finance dissertation as it contributes a lot to their respective degrees. This blog provides you with the best topics, a dissertation structure, and more.

This Blog Includes:

What is a finance dissertation, why finance dissertation topics are important, tips to find excellent dissertation topics on finance, writing tips for finance dissertation, how to plan your work on a finance dissertation, how to structure a finance dissertation, finance dissertation general topics , topics related to india, mba dissertation topics, banking dissertation topics , accounting dissertation topics, research project example, final consideration and conclusion.

Finance dissertations, as the name implies, are pieces of writing that study a certain finance topic chosen by the student. The subjects covered include anything from the stock market to banking and risk management to healthcare finance. This dissertation gives the student academic self-assurance and personal happiness in the subject of finance. Finance writing necessitates substantial research in order to produce a compelling report.

The majority of students have no idea why finance dissertation themes are so crucial. However, put yourself in the shoes of your lecturer. You’ve already read hundreds of theses. The majority of them covered the same ground — issues that you’re already tired of hearing about. Then there’s a topic with a distinct, intriguing theme. Something that piques your interest and entices you to read more. Wouldn’t you give those pupils some extra credit? You’d do it! This is why there are so many fantastic finance dissertation topics. You can get extra points for your efforts. The topic of your paper might mean the difference between a good and a terrific grade.

It’s difficult to come up with anything unique and interesting. There are, nevertheless, ways to come up with interesting ideas. Here are a few pointers on how to locate them:

  • Read a fantastic finance dissertation and find for areas where further study is needed.
  • Go to the library and read a couple theses to get some ideas.
  • Inquire with a writing agency about some ideas from one of their professional dissertation writers.
  • In writing forums and blogs, ask for assistance. If you ask gently, people will give you some excellent suggestions.
  • Look for ideas on the internet, but don’t use them exactly as they are. Make them distinctive by changing them.
  • Talk to other students who are working on their dissertations and find out what other ideas they had before settling on the present topic.
  • Narrow down your topic : Your financial topic should be narrowed down to a certain niche. It should concentrate on a single area, such as microfinance, microfinance, or online banking.
  • Verify your facts: Finance is a topic that requires a great deal of logical analysis of statistical data. As a result, double-check facts and statistics using credible sources before using them in your paper.
  • Write concisely: You should condense a financial paper into a tight, succinct work, unlike other papers with extended narrative narratives. At this length, the adage of ‘short is sweet’ theoretically applies.
  • Arrange your data neatly: A report that is crammed with numbers and graphs may turn off a reader at first glance. Know how and when to utilise your data for a great financial thesis.
  • Write simply: Avoid using jargon that might be confusing to a non-technical reader. When technical terminology are required, utilise accessible examples to convey them. In a finance dissertation, simplicity is king. So make good use of it.

You are supposed to submit the work by the end of your study course, so by the last year of your degree, you may have got enough ideas and problems dealing with finance. Emerging Accounting Trends 2024: Are India’s Outsourcing Companies Leading the Way?

9 MIN READ | Posted on December 04, 2023 Written By Divya Ramaswamy

LinkedIN

The accounting profession is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by an array of factors, including technological advancements, regulatory changes, increased demand for outsourced accounting services , and, notably, a growing talent shortage. This issue is reshaping the industry, pushing firms to reconsider their operational and strategic approaches. As we explore the emerging accounting trends of 2024, understanding the roots and ramifications of this shortage is key.

The shortage is starkly evident in recent statistics. According to AICPA’s 2023 Trends Report, approximately 47,000 students earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in the 2021-22 school year, marking a 7.8% decline from the previous year. The number of students obtaining a master’s degree in accounting also decreased by 6.4% to 18,238 in the same period. This decline in accounting graduates is linked to several factors, including an aging workforce, perceived limited career advancement, and the increasing complexity of accounting roles. The rapid evolution of financial technologies, demanding a broad skill set and continuous learning, also contributes to this trend.

As a consequence, the talent shortage is causing widespread operational challenges. Another survey has also highlighted that many accounting firms are struggling with staffing issues. This has led to an increased demand for accountants, escalating salaries, and intensifying competition for skilled professionals.

The most common factors reported to be contributing to the decreasing interest in accounting as a major:

* The 150-hour requirement for certification acts as an entry barrier.

*A general perception that accounting lacks excitement.

*Relatively lower salaries compared to fields like finance and technology.

*An observable shortfall in diversity within the field.

*The view of accounting as an overly specialized major.

*High costs associated with obtaining an education in accounting.

*Overall declining enrollments in higher education institutions.

To address these challenges, firms are increasingly turning to outsourced accounting services. This shift is more than a temporary fix; it’s a strategic realignment of the accounting function. By shifting to outsourced accounting services from providers, particularly in countries like India, businesses can access a skilled workforce at a reduced cost. Accounting outsourcing companies in India are recognized for their expertise and efficiency in delivering quality services.

The global accounting services market is experiencing growth, with its value reaching $604.2 billion in 2023, an increase of 1.99% from 2022. This market is projected to grow to $1.5 trillion by 2032, at a CAGR of 9.2% from 2023 to 2032 . Particularly in India, the accounting industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6% from 2021, reaching $687.7 billion in 2023. This growth underlines the strategic importance of outsourced accounting services .

Here is a list of the top 10 trends that are currently shaping the accounting profession in 2024. From innovative technologies to the significant role of outsourced accounting services , these trends provide key insights into the future dynamics of the industry.

1. Rise of AI and Automation in Accounting

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation into accounting is a game-changer. Recent research indicates that nearly 40% of accounting tasks are now automated, leading to increased efficiency and accuracy. This trend is revolutionizing traditional accounting practices, as AI algorithms can analyze large datasets quickly, identify patterns, and even predict future trends. For businesses utilizing outsourced accounting services, this means access to more sophisticated data analysis tools. Automation also reduces the risk of human error and allows accounting professionals to focus on more strategic aspects of finance. As AI and automation technologies advance, they will continue to reshape the accounting profession.

2. Increased Demand for Outsourced Accounting Services

The global market for outsourced accounting services is witnessing significant growth. According to a report by Grand View Research, this market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.4% from 2021 to 2028. The driving force behind this surge is the increasing complexity of financial operations and the need for cost-effective solutions. Businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, are turning to outsourcing accounting functions to reduce operational costs and gain access to specialized expertise. This trend is also fueled by the digital transformation in the accounting sector, enabling seamless integration of outsourced services. Accounting outsourcing services provide businesses with scalable solutions, from basic bookkeeping to advanced financial analysis, ensuring they can adapt to changing market conditions efficiently.

3. Shift Towards Cloud-Based Solutions

The shift towards cloud-based solutions in accounting is accelerating rapidly. A report from Statista shows that more than 70% of companies are expected to use cloud technology for financial operations by 2022. This shift is largely due to the flexibility, scalability, and security offered by cloud computing. Cloud-based accounting solutions allow for real-time data access and collaboration, irrespective of location, which is particularly beneficial for firms engaged in outsourcing accounting. This technology enables accounting outsourcing companies in India and other global locations to provide seamless, integrated services to clients worldwide. Moreover, cloud solutions offer enhanced data security and disaster recovery options, making them a reliable choice for managing sensitive financial data. As cloud technology continues to evolve, it will play a crucial role in shaping the future of accounting, particularly in enhancing the efficiency and reach of outsourced accounting services.

4. Sustainability Reporting and ESG

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are increasingly becoming integral to accounting practices. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reports that over 75% of large companies are now engaging in sustainability reporting. This shift is not just about compliance; it’s about value creation and risk management. Companies that adopt ESG practices are seen as more attractive to investors, and accounting firms are responding by integrating ESG factors into their reporting and advisory services. Outsourced accounting services are adapting too, offering ESG reporting to help businesses align with global sustainability standards. This trend is expected to gain further momentum as stakeholders demand more transparency and accountability from businesses.

5. Increasing Role of Big Data

Big Data is revolutionizing the accounting industry by enabling more informed decision-making. According to recent report, 53% of companies have adopted big data analytics. This trend is empowering accountants to move beyond traditional record-keeping and compliance roles to become strategic business advisors. Big data analytics allows for predictive modeling, risk assessment, and financial forecasting, providing valuable insights that can drive business growth. Accounting outsourcing services, especially in data-rich environments like India, are leveraging big data to offer more nuanced and sophisticated financial analysis, thus providing a competitive edge to their clients.

6. Emergence of Outsourced Accounting Services in India

India has emerged as a leader in the accounting outsourcing industry. India holds about 37% of the global outsourcing market. The country’s accounting outsourcing companies offer a blend of cost-effectiveness, skilled workforce, and technological prowess, making them attractive to global businesses. These firms are not just about cost savings; they provide value-added services such as tax advisory, financial planning, and regulatory compliance, adapting quickly to the dynamic global accounting landscape. This trend is bolstering India’s position as a go-to destination for accounting outsourcing services, significantly impacting how companies worldwide manage their finances.

7. Focus on Cybersecurity in Accounting

With the increasing digitization of financial data, cybersecurity has become a paramount concern in the accounting industry. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts global cybersecurity spending to exceed $1 trillion cumulatively from 2017 to 2021. Companies providing outsourced accounting services are investing heavily in robust cybersecurity measures to protect sensitive financial data. This includes adopting advanced encryption techniques, regular security audits, and employee training to mitigate the risk of data breaches. The focus on cybersecurity is not just about protecting data; it’s about maintaining client trust and ensuring compliance with evolving data protection regulations.

8. Adoption of Blockchain in Accounting

Blockchain technology is rapidly gaining traction in the accounting sector for its potential to enhance transparency and security in financial transactions. 84% of companies are actively involved with blockchain technology. This adoption is revolutionizing how transactions are recorded, verified, and reported. Blockchain’s immutable ledger provides a more secure and transparent way to maintain financial records, reducing the potential for fraud and errors. The integration of blockchain in accounting processes signifies a significant shift towards more secure, transparent, and efficient financial reporting.

9. Increasing Importance of Advisory Services

The accounting profession is witnessing a significant shift from traditional bookkeeping to a more consultative role. According to AICPA, revenue from consulting and advisory services in accounting firms has grown by 20% in recent years. This trend reflects the evolving needs of businesses that require more than just compliance services; they seek strategic advice to navigate complex financial landscapes. Accounting outsourcing services are adapting to this shift by offering a range of advisory services, including financial planning, risk management, and business consulting. This evolution is transforming accounting firms from managing tedious compliance tasks to becoming strategic partners, adding more value to their clients’ businesses.

10. Talent Acquisition and Training Challenges

Talent management remains a significant challenge in the accounting industry. A report by Robert Half highlights that 89% of CFOs find it challenging to attract qualified accounting and finance professionals. This talent shortage is prompting firms to rethink their hiring and training strategies. Firms are increasingly focusing on upskilling their workforce to keep pace with the latest technological advancements and regulatory changes.  This focus on talent development is critical for maintaining the quality of accounting services and for firms to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.

11. Nearshore Outsourcing: Mexico as a Key Destination

Nearshore outsourcing is gaining momentum, with Mexico emerging as a prime destination for U.S. accounting firms. Its close proximity, similar time zone, and cultural affinity with the U.S. make it an ideal nearshore option. Businesses are leveraging Mexico’s skilled workforce for accounting services, benefiting from easier collaboration and communication. This trend complements traditional offshore outsourcing, offering a strategic balance between cost-effectiveness and operational synergy. As the global business landscape evolves, Mexico’s role in nearshore accounting outsourcing is poised to grow, providing U.S. firms with efficient, culturally aligned, and responsive accounting solutions.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The accounting profession in 2024 is poised to undergo significant transformations driven by technological advancements, regulatory changes, and evolving business needs. The rise of AI and automation, the shift towards cloud-based solutions, and the integration of blockchain technology are not just reshaping how accounting tasks are performed but also redefining the value that accounting professionals bring to the table. The increasing importance of sustainability reporting, big data, and advisory services further highlights the evolving role of accountants.

Particularly notable is the surge in demand for outsourced accounting services and the pivotal role of accounting outsourcing companies in India. These firms are at the forefront of adopting these emerging trends, offering a blend of technological expertise, cost-effectiveness, and skilled workforce, making them attractive partners for global businesses. The focus on cybersecurity and the challenges in talent acquisition and training are reminders that the industry must continuously adapt and innovate to stay relevant and secure.

As we look towards 2024, it’s clear that the accounting profession is not just about managing financial records but is increasingly about providing strategic insights and solutions that drive business growth. In this rapidly evolving landscape, outsourced accounting services from specialized firms, particularly those in India, appear to be a strategic move for businesses looking to stay ahead of the curve. These trends collectively signal a new era in accounting, one that is more dynamic, interconnected, and indispensable to the success of businesses in a globalized economy.
