Cinderella movie review: A multi-racial retelling of the story with a feminist tinge

A still from 'Cinderella' (Photo| IMDb)

Cinderella is a well-known fairy tale and over the years there have been numerous versions of it. The tale's origins appear to date back to a Chinese story from the ninth century known as 'Yeh Shen' or 'Ye Xian'. Thereafter, almost every culture seems to have its own version and every storyteller his or her tale.

Director Kay Cannon's 'Cinderella' is a live-action, musical adaptation of the fairy tale. With wit, sarcasm, a tinge of feminism, contemporary messages and a multi-racial representation, the tale appears to be fantastically fresh and appealing.

Set in an "old-fashioned kingdom bound by tradition", the film begins with telling us how a young girl Ella got rechristened 'Cinderella', a name that is etched in our minds forever.

Living with her "practical" stepmother and stepsisters -- the obnoxious Malvolia and the self-absorbed Narissa -- Cinderella spends most of her time in the basement of her house along with her three pet mice.

She is not a damsel in distress, but a young woman with big dreams and aspirations. She is not interested in marriage; instead, she wants to be a businesswoman, travel the world and be a dress designer owning her garment shop.

On the other hand, Prince Robert, the "idiot son" of the King, is coaxed by his family to settle down. Select a girl and get married, they tell him. His father reminds him, "Kings marry for power, not love."

Unbeknownst to Cinderella, Prince Robert sets his eyes on her at a chance meeting in the market square, where she sells him a dress that she had designed. He cajoles her to go to the ball (where the Prince is supposed to select his future wife). "There will be guests there from all over the world," he says to her. "Open-minded people with cash to spare. I know them, I could introduce you to them if you like."

Hoping for a business opportunity, she agrees to go to the ball. After which, we all know how Cinderella lands up at the ball with the help of her godmother. At the ball, when Prince Robert proposes to her, says to her , "You'll become royalty." Cinderella turns down his proposal by telling him, "But what about my work. I have dreams."

What takes you by surprise, in a totally unexpected way, is the 'Fabulous Godmother' played by Billy Porter. Despite being on screen for a limited time with an outlandish outfit and flashy disposition, he leaves his mark in your memory space.

The others who are equally effective with their performances are: Camilla Cabello as Cinderella, Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert, Idina Menzel as the Stepmother, Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan, Minnie Driver as Queen Mother Beatrice, and Tallulah Greive as Princess Gwen.

Packed with contemporary songs set to racy music -- solos, duets, choruses, ensembles and dance sequences, the narrative seamlessly unravels like a dream. There are some 14 tracks, which have been intelligently interwoven in the narrative. Some of the songs are: Madonna's 'Material Girl', Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation / You Gotta Be' and Freddie Mercury's 'Somebody to Love'. Apart from these oft-heard numbers, there are some original tracks too.

Production designer Paul Kirby's sets and Ellen Mirojnick's costumes complement each other. They are colourfully pitch-perfect, filling DOP Henry Braham's frames with dreamy pastel shades that transport you to the film's dream locales.

What to Know

This singalong-worthy Cinderella sprinkles some modern fairy dust on the oft-told tale, but flat performances and clunky dialogue make watching often feel like a chore.

The world may not have needed another Cinderella , but fun songs and a great cast make this update easy to enjoy.

Cinderella 2021 Movie Review: Camila Cabello's Musical Fairytale Has Happily Ever After For Everyone

Cinderella is only good for its one-line pitch. the story does not have to suffer for the sake of experimentation. however, the film is worth a watch for the carefree experience it is trying hard to sell..

Available On: Amazon Prime Video Duration: 113 minutes Language: English

Story: Cinderella is a musical modern-day retelling of the Disney fairytale. It follows Ella a peasant girl who dreams of owning a boutique and selling dresses designed by her. Meanwhile, Billy Porter plays Fairy Godparent aka Fab G who helps Ella reach the royal ball.

Camila Cabello, Nicholas Galitzine

Review: Over the course of the film's promotion the makers have revealed that the idea of the retelling began with producer James Corden's concern about how outdated fairytales are. The Amazon Prime Original serves its purpose, the film is inclusive and breaks stereotypes not only for women but also children who have dreams for themselves, who want adventure and hope to discover the world.

Camila is introduced as a peasant girl Ella, who is stuck in her basement designing clothes for no one in particular. She dreams that someday she will be able to start her own boutique called Dresses By Ella and sell her designs across the world. Ella is told off by her stepmother, Vivian (Idina Menzel) reminding her that women cannot own businesses. Meanwhile, Vivian is obsessed with having a better future for herself and her daughters. Her priority is marrying the girls off into a rich family so they can all live in luxury and comfort.

Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine) also gets an interesting twist of his own in the new retelling. He is shown as an adventurous lad looking forward to taking his father's place as King because it is expected of him, not because it makes him happy. He refuses marriage proposals brought for the sake of land and territory and chooses to find his true love. We also get to see the King and the Queen struggle with their relationship, while the smart and intelligent princess fights for a room at the counsel's table.

Cinderella Trailer: Camila Cabello Is An Ambitious Businesswoman In Modern Day Fairy Tale

Robert first sets his eyes on Ella at a public event and is impressed when she defies the King. He then proceeds to look for her in disguise and buys a dress designed by her. On offering an invite to the ball, Ella refuses to go since she is not looking for love. But Robert convinces her that he will introduce her to possible clients from all around the world.

The rest of the story goes pretty much the same except for the ending which gives second chances to every single character. The makers have made the film more about new beginnings and acceptance instead of that action and consequences. Cinderella does not take itself too seriously nor does it give an audience the chance to hate any characters. The stepsisters are shown open to Ella's contribution and the only time stepmother does get mad at her is when she realises if Ella comes to the ball, her daughters will not have a chance to win Robert's heart.

Camila Cabello's Ella is the most underdeveloped character in the film. Her only trait is she wants to become a businesswoman, even, people's princess Gwen (Tallulah Greive) who has a screen-time of lesser than ten minutes has a more rounded personality. Camila also seems more robotic as an actress but gives an incredible performance as a singer.

Prince Robert and Queen Beatrice (Minnie Driver) are two characters and actors that will surprise the audience the most. On the other hand, Idina Menzel is the only star who makes a mark. She is not only perfect as the stepmother but is also the only character who makes a deeper connection with the audience.

The soundtrack of the film has several hit pop songs and few originals like Million to One, and Dream Girl. While some of them feel very out of place for the time and countryside but they fit right in with the film's tone. Unlike Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins, the soundtrack of Cinderella is actually enjoyable.

EXCLUSIVE! Cinderella Producers Leo Pearlman & James Corden Talk About Updating Old Fairy Tales

The screenplay is based only on inclusivity and breaking stereotypes, it is not necessarily focused on building a story or giving the audience a dramatic representation through the retelling. While the original Cinderella had moments of sadness and misery even loss of hope, Camila Cabello's musical is oozing sunshine even in the lowest moment.

Overall, Cinderella is good only for its one-line pitch. The story does not have to suffer when trying to be more inclusive. If the director and writer Kay Cannon had spent more time on paper the execution could lead to more appreciation of all the diverse characters. However, the film is worth a watch for the carefree experience it is trying hard to sell.

cinderella tamil movie review 2021

A murder happens in the city, and a sound designer, Akira, was suspected to be the murderer. But, she says that she is innocent and doesn’t know anything about the murder. Akira has come to the place to record the birds’ voices for her next movie project. Akira visits an antique shop, where she finds the dress of a Cinderella, which she brought to her house. Akira experiences some weird happenings at home after the arrival of the dress. After some time, Ramya, a wealthy girl, is killed. All the murders are by the ghost, and it targets Ramya’s mother. Why did it kill people? Were they the reason for Cinderella’s death? The rest of the plot deals with it.

Star Performance

Raai Laxmi had given a fantastic performance. Robo Shankar appears in a guest role.

The plot is good but not unique. As we had witnessed umpteen horror stories, this film doesn’t impress us with its story plot. However, the performance of Rai Laxmi and some exciting scenes make us sit and watch the movie. Robo Shankar’s comedy didn’t work out. The flashback scenes are good, and it gives a strong follow up for the plot. The cinematography and the visuals are worth mentioning.

What’s There?

  • Performance of Raai Laxmi
  • Strong flashback scenes

What’s Not There?

  • Comedy didn’t work out
  • Predictable scenes and a decade-old plot

Cinderella is attractive in the flashback portions. Raai Laxmi is good in the lead role. If you don’t have any films to watch, you can check this out! Though you may not be impressed, you will not be disappointed! Cinderella – you can watch it once!

‘Cinderella’ Review: Camila Cabello Shines in Progressive but Prosaic Reimagining of a Familiar Fairy Tale

A struggling servant dreams of seamstress superstardom despite a sinister stepmother’s sabotage in this mediocre musical.

Cinderella

From the outset of Amazon Studios’ new “ Cinderella ” movie, writer-director Kay Cannon welcomes audiences into a fantasy unlike any before it, putting a glimmering girl-boss gloss on the oft-adapted fairy tale. In this heightened unreality, characters can break into song with a Janet Jackson chart-topper as easily as they belt out a new Broadway-style power ballad. This latest retelling of the Charles Perrault classic offers a feminist-friendly update as its titular heroine dreams of a career, not a man, to whisk her away. While Cannon’s inspired creative approach and jukebox musical style all point to an elegant and empowering redesign of this most familiar of garments, her execution puts quite a few tears in the fabric.

Ella ( Camila Cabello ) has been relegated to a life of servitude after her father died years prior, leaving her in the care of his cruel second wife Vivian (Idina Menzel), further scrutinized by her obnoxious stepsisters Malvolia (Maddie Baillio) and Narissa (Charlotte Spencer). Nicknamed Cinderella because of the layer of soot she acquires doing household chores, she dreams of breaking out of the home’s dingy basement and into the world of fashion as a dressmaker. But since the times are not conducive to a career-minded woman, and the townsfolk are set in their old-fashioned ways, all she can do is sing to vent about her burning desires.

Meanwhile, potential soulmate Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine) is trapped in a life he’s reticent to lead as his arrogant father King Rowen (Pierce Brosnan) and kindly mother Queen Beatrice (Minnie Driver) are demanding that he find a bride and take the throne. He’d rather slack off with his band of merry men than marry and wear the crown. His smart sister Princess Gwen (Tallulah Greive) is the more suitable sibling to lead the kingdom, except she’s up against unabashed male chauvinism guiding the king’s call.

Popular on Variety

The plan is to throw a grand ball, with invitations sent to the entire kingdom, giving the reluctant royal ample options from which to select his perfect match. Yet he meets true love Ella before the lavish affair is set to take place, first discovering her at the announcement ceremony and then later, in disguise, bumping into her at the marketplace, buying an evening gown from her. As fate and Ella’s fabulous fairy godmother Fab G (Billy Porter) work their magic, conflicts surrounding her career goals surface, threatening to separate the dynamic duo.

Cannon takes great craft and care to ensure that her heroine’s internal and external motivations serve to drive the story forward. This modernized take has the sympathetic protagonist wrestle with a compelling conundrum, figuring out how Ella and her prince can continue to love each other while attaining their respective career ambitions (or hers, at least, since he maddeningly never verbalizes what he wants in that regard). Their superficial struggle, surrounding class structure and wealth disparity, is assuredly still part of the tale’s DNA, culminating in an empowering musical number (“Dream Girl”) in which all the women, led by Vivian, join together to sing about the stifling, suffocating societal sexism they’ve endured. This showstopper hits like a sledgehammer to the glass ceiling that restrains them all. Humanizing Ella’s tormenter in the process may seem ill-advised, but it winds up being one of the film’s blessed surprises.

Still, for all the innovative, intelligent decisions made, there are an overwhelming number of frustrating creative choices. The movie’s pacing is inconsistent, especially when it comes to character development, which can feel at once underdeveloped and overstuffed. From the stepsisters (who are softened to the point of serving little to no purpose) to the members of the royal court (whose arcs are extraneous), practically everyone beyond Ella and Vivian suffers greatly from tissue-paper-thin character motivations that pivot on a whim, making the audience question why these superfluous story threads are there at all. It’s clear Ella is the underlying force inspiring change in these folks, but the reasons instigating those changes defy logic.

Lavish musical set-pieces, this film’s bread and butter, fail to immerse or transport audiences as intended. Though designed to conjure energy and bewitching wonderment in their design, there’s a pervasive lack of aesthetic intrigue and individual identity. These numbers are exhausting, not enthralling. Composed like music videos, with quick, sharp cuts alternating between wide and medium shots, these sequences do a disservice to Ashley Wallen’s wonderfully anachronistic choreography and Ellen Mirojnick’s breathtaking costumes. The wonderful wardrobe is valued for its poignancy and power in the creation of Ella’s magical ball gown, only to be undermined in later scenes, as the film plows through palpable moments like Ella’s designer debut.

While some of the material sags, a few performances uplift the indomitable spirit of the time-honored tale and its refashioned sentiments. Cabello is a magnetic screen presence who demonstrates a natural sense of comedic timing, infusing her character with vulnerability, compassion and effervescence. She and Galitzine share a sweet, chaste chemistry. But it’s Porter who steals the show. He does not disappoint. He’s vivacious, vibrant and knows precisely how to deliver a satisfying “well, well, well” — so much so that younger audiences might assume he invented its usage. His charisma sparkles as brightly as his sequined ensemble, and his sole physical appearance (he also partially narrates this journey) is filled with magnificent, magical splendor.

Even though prior iterations of this tale — such as “Ever After,” Disney’s TV movie adaptation “Cinderella” and Kenneth Branagh’s live-action “Cinderella” — offered similarly enlightened, forward-thinking commentary, Cannon’s, for better and worse, is far more obtuse about its machinations. And while it’s a noble effort from a capable director, this glass slipper proves frustratingly ill-fitting.

Introduction

Another Sunday, Another Heartbreat at the T20 World Cup. India are now all but out of the tournament due to their lacklustre performance. And I am seeing the trolls working overtime too! Yes, the players need to be criticized but again let us remember that this team had previously brought many glories and joys to us. And at the end of the day it is a sport and only the best team wins. We clearly wern’t that and we can be a little more gracious even while criticizing(which by the way is required too). But the focus shifts back to the movies and I finished watching the new Tamil Horror film on Halloween Cinderella on Amazon Prime. The title itself was intriguing as was the poster. Well, does the film manage to impress, lets find out.

Story & Screenplay

Cinderella follows the story of a few murders taking place in a valley under mysterious circumstances. Who is the killer? The story is a horror film veiled as a whodunnit and it isn’t anything that you haven’t already seen before. The screenplay is very patchy here. For starters, the horror element is stereotypical and doesn’t really scare you, instead it causes unintentional laughter. Secondly, the events in the first half follow a fixed horror template and thus is outdated. The second half is slightly better with a back story where the makers try to incorporate the tale of Cinderella in a modern day setting. But the events in the first half don’t really add up to the events in the second half and it seemed like watching two separate movies. This culminates into a final act that is laughable with a bizarre twist that makes the screenplay even more disjoint. I just feel had they focussed on the investigation and the whodunnit element then that would have been more interesting. But here, the screenplay just doesn’t inspire by trying to do things that just wern’t required. Patchy!

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are corny and not quite well written. The music and BGM are alright. Director Vinoo Venketesh just misses the mark. For one he did not have a great script at hand and on top of it his direction is lacklustre and lacks imagination that is crucial in a horror film.

Performances

There are a bunch of actors but none of them manage to impress barring Raai Laxmi. Raai Laxmi looks gorgeous here and has two distinct personalities in the film – one of a modern day sound engineer and the other a small town servant and she does full justice to both roles. It is a pity her performance comes in a film which is literally substandard.

Cinderella is just a substandard horror film that is lacklustre and misses the mark by some way. Available on Amazon Prime.

cinderella tamil movie review 2021

Now streaming on:

Cinderella has survived a lot over the years, first the wicked stepmother and the midnight curfew and then hundreds of versions and adaptations in books, on television, and in film, undertaken by just about everyone, including Walt Disney , Julie Andrews , Jerry Lewis , Drew Barrymore , Anne Hathaway , and Rodgers and Hammerstein. She is going to survive this tricked-up version, too, a mish-mash of relentless air quotes and sensory overload that wants to grab you by the shoulders and shout—no, sing—"BE ENTERTAINED." And sometimes we are. But it is less a movie than a string of TikTok clips and it made my eyes spin like pinwheels.

In fairness, my five-year-old cousin will love it. It helps a lot that the Cinderella story is a classic for a reason. The essence of this tale, about the mistreated but pure-hearted girl who gets the ultimate makeover and the classic fairy tale happily ever after ending appears in many cultures going back as far as recorded history. There are moments in this film where that imperishable story shines through, despite all efforts to clutter it up with snippets of pop songs and winks at the audience.

Each generation brings its own perspective to the Cinderella story. Recent versions focused on more diversity (the Brandy/ Whitney Houston version), more agency (" Ever After "), or at least a better explanation for her obedience (" Ella Enchanted "). In this version, Cinderella (singer Camila Cabello ) has big dreams of being a fashion designer and supporting herself so that she no longer has to live in her stepmother's basement. It also tries to give the stepmother ( Idina Menzel ) some understanding of the reason for her cruelty and tones down the mean girl element of the two step-sisters.

But the screenplay by writer/director Kay Cannon (" Pitch Perfect ") overcorrects "Cinderella" and leaves the storyline unbalanced. It's possible to give the title character more aspirations, independence, and humor without dulling down everyone around her. But attributes are handed out here, one to a character, a challenge even the talented cast cannot overcome: the king ( Pierce Brosnan ) is dictatorial, the queen ( Minnie Driver ) is frustrated, the princess ( Tallulah Greive ) studies public policy, and the fairy god-person ( Billy Porter as Fab G) is flamboyant. Prince Robert ( Nicholas Galitzine ) barely has any attributes at all other than being handsome, singing nicely, and being crazy about Cinderella. It's supposed to be a running joke that he is referred to as "The King's Idiot Son." But it's kind of not wrong. Okay, maybe not an idiot, but kind of a spoiled slacker who is clear on what he's not interested in but not so clear on what he might be interested in.

Audiences may not notice all of that, though, because there's a lot going on, and most of it is very tuneful and colorful with some big, bright dance numbers. Hence the prediction about the five-year-old, and, I have to admit, the five-year-old that lives in all of us. The movie begins with a spirited opening number showing the villagers dancing to ... "Rhythm Nation." Yes, Janet Jackson's version of a new national anthem, calling for social justice, is just the thing for a vaguely 18th or 19th century village to sing as they get ready for the day. On the other hand, it's undeniably peppy and energetic, with lots of popular songs from the era of Gen Z's parents and grandparents, like "What a Man," "Shining Star," and "Seven Nation Army." But Queen's "Somebody to Love" is an unfortunate reminder that it was used better in "Ella Enchanted."

The musical numbers are much better than the dialogue, which is cutesy. Not once, but twice, we hear that the prince "still gets spanked on the tush-tush." Even Porter's snap cannot save his lines about the glass slippers not being comfortable.

Musical characters like to introduce themselves with an "I Want" song, and so we meet Cinderella, in her basement workshop, saving a caterpillar from a spider web and singing "You Gotta Be" by Des'ree. So, what does she want? To be bold, tough, wiser, and better, and for love to save the day. She is sweet, she is optimistic, and she is loved by mice, one of them voiced by producer James Corden . This is yet another reminder that one reason the producer should not be in the movie is that producers are not the best judge of whether they add value to the movie.

The frenetic silliness and uneven tone are unfortunate distractions from the genuine pleasures of the film, including Cabello's appealing performance as Cinderella, and the creative and energetic musical numbers. This Cinderella story should have asked Fab G for a make-under.

Easily one of the most adapted fairy tales, there aren’t too many new avenues to go down when telling Cinderella ‘s story. Name a “fresh” angle and there’s likely already a film or a television series that has adapted that same “clever” idea for its own use. Even the marketing and promotion for the newest version of “Cinderella,” which all lean heavily into the film as being a contemporary take on the classic story, has been done before, and recently: look no further than “Ever After” or “A Cinderella Story.” So with the deck quite literally stacked against the film, it’s remarkable just how effervescent and charming Kay Cannon ‘s “Cinderella” actually is.

The story follows our eponymous character, played by singer Camila Cabello in her cinematic debut, who dreams of rising out of her basement and becoming a dressmaker. The problem? Her tiny village is incredibly old-fashioned and doesn’t allow its womenfolk to be in business. As Ella chases her dreams, they put her in the path of Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine), who is similarly struggling with his own career problems (in his case, he doesn’t know whether he wants to be king, that old story).

Related Stories ‘Witches’ Review: Elizabeth Sankey Reflects on Postpartum Mental Illness in Veracious Documentary ‘Inside Out 2’ Review: All Brains and No Heart, This Disappointing Sequel Proves Pixar Learned All the Wrong Lessons from Its Pandemic Years

Cannon, who directed the raunchy teen comedy “Blockers” back in 2018, understands that there’s little that can actually be done to set the story apart from its predecessors, and thus decides to intensify the fun of it all. The addition of music is also nothing unique to Cinderella tales, especially for those who grew up with either of the three Rogers and Hammerstein versions, but the choice to turn this oft-portrayed fairy tale into a jukebox musical is the smartest element of “Cinderella.”

We meet Ella and the townsfolk during a mixed rendition of Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” and Des’ree’s “You Gotta Be.” Jessica Weiss and Mychael Danna’s musical compositions are fantastic, creating a weight and intensity to all the song-and-dance sequences, especially a mashup of the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” and Salt-N-Pepa’s “Whatta Man” that draws comparisons to the tango in “Moulin Rouge.” Ashley Wallen, who choreographed “The Greatest Showman,” another unexpected musical delight, brings a similar verve to her full-scale dance scenes, all of which are captured in full, sweeping crane shots by cinematographer Henry Braham for a touch of Old Hollywood musical panache.

With so many songs in the film, it’s odd that Cabello herself only gets one major solo, the infectious “Million to One.” It’s the film’s Oscar song, and boy, does the production want you to know that, having Cabello sing it three times in the film’s near-two-hour running time. To her credit, Cabello does well in her first feature film. Her Ella is spunky, with clearly believable aspirations, but the film never feels comfortable making her the star of it all, despite marketing trading on her name recognition. Long stretches of film go by without Cabello present, whether she’s running away to the marketplace while her stepmother (deliciously played by Idina Menzel) and stepsisters perform, or in favor of giving the prince more to do. It will be interesting to see what other acting gigs Cabello nabs next, if only so that we might finally get a chance to see her fully inhabit a role.

Camilla Cabello stars in CINDERELLAPhoto: Christopher Raphael

At times, it almost feels as if Prince Robert is the star of this “Cinderella,” with so much screen time devoted to his struggles against his stodgy father King Rowan (Pierce Brosnan), who so desperately wants to own a sea monster (just go with it), and his younger sister Gwen (Tallulah Grieve), a born ruler with the unfortunate impediment of being born a girl in a decidedly man’s world. The relationship between Robert and Ella, on the surface, feels like the film’s take on the Harry and Meghan story, which works for the most part, but Ella’s dream of dressmaking is often thrust into the backseat in the face of their blossoming romance.

Many of the moments involving the village’s anti-female tone are settled so quickly you’ll wonder why they weren’t solved years ago. There are glimmers of a darker examination of the ways women are cast aside for having ambitions, most notably in Menzel’s Vivian. The evil stepmother of the “Cinderella” tale has become notably less evil over numerous iterations; in this case, Menzel crafts a character who believes that her dreams for herself were the cause of losing out on love. Cabello and Menzel have a strong chemistry and it’s a shame they don’t share more scenes together.

This is probably because “Cinderella” has to accomplish so many things, from including musical moments to hitting all the necessary beats of its fairy tale story, in one single film. We see Ella designing out of her swank basement — Billy Porter’s fairy godfather character, Fab G, can call it dingy all he wants, but you know that it would go for a mint on Zillow — and is made fun of once or twice, but there aren’t stakes to her not accomplishing what she wants. Later, Ella’s trip to the ball is inspired by getting business connections, and it’s hard not see that her being a princess would make her dreams attainable. By the third act, the entire dressmaking conceit is all but a loosely stitched feather, blowing in the narrative wind.

Still, Cannon’s take on “Cinderella” looks to be this year’s “Greatest Showman,” where the flaws in the narrative are nothing in comparison to the vibrancy and energy on display with each and every musical number, worth dancing for, maybe even in a pair of glass slippers.

“Cinderella” will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, September 3.
