Your Learning Experience

Fashion Design is a three-year co-operative Ontario College Advanced Diploma program providing professional career-directed training in the development, production management and marketing of apparel design. Through classroom theory, lecture, lab work, field trips and work term experience, skills are applied. Networking with industry professionals promotes future employment opportunities. Emphasis is placed on design analysis, apparel manufacturing and technology, and design communications and marketing.

You’ll develop skills in creative design, visual communication, business marketing and apparel production technologies. You’ll also learn practical skills like fashion illustration, computer aided design, pattern-making and draping and garment construction. The third year of study culminates with a capstone project, where students concept, produce and present a final collection.

Investment in advanced talent key to Canada’s success in the knowledge economy: U of T study

By Adina Bresge

PhD graduates are experiencing growing demand for their knowledge and skills across multiple sectors – further evidence that strategic investments in advanced talent support Canada’s global competitiveness.

A new  Career Outcomes study , led by the University of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies, finds that while U of T continues to be Canada’s leading generator of academic talent, an increasing number of PhD graduates are also finding success in the private sector.

Employers now recognize that universities are both generating new discoveries and training the industry leaders they need, says  Joshua Barker , vice-provost, graduate research and education and dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

“What we’re seeing is that U of T is playing a role in bringing advanced researchers, with their specialized knowledge and skills, into the workforce,” says Barker, who recently joined academic, industry, government and other leaders to discuss the study at an event hosted by the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and U of T’s Government Relations Office – part of the New Frontiers for Policymakers policy discussion series.

“The more pathways there are to move back and forth between university, industry and non-profit, the better it is for a robust, resilient and competitive economy.”

The Career Outcomes study shows that professional paths for U of T’s PhD graduates are expanding, based on a survey of publicly available data on roughly 16,000 alumni over the past two decades .

While the post-secondary sector remains the primary employer for PhD graduates, the study shows a nearly 10-per-cent rise in private sector employment for PhD grads when comparing the 2000-2015 and 2016-2021 cohorts – from 19 per cent to 27 per cent.

The top industries hiring PhD graduates include life sciences, engineering, trades and transportation and health and information technology.

PhD graduates in the physical sciences, meanwhile, were the most likely to find employment in the private sector, amounting to nearly 43 per cent of all alumni as of 2022. Major employers included Google, Intel and Royal Bank of Canada.

At present, only about one per cent of Canadians have a PhD degree. But this number may rise following the federal government’s recent commitment to invest  $825 million over the next five years to increase the value and number of scholarships for master’s students, PhD students and post-doctoral fellows .

“The recent investment that the federal government made has a huge impact for us, and I think it will help accelerate some of the trends that we’re seeing,” says Barker, adding that sustained support is necessary to develop the pipeline of advanced research talent to fuel Canada’s innovation ecosystem.

""

That includes startups such as Toronto-based Xanadu , founded by former U of T post-doc  Christian Weedbrook , which is working to build the world’s first photonic-based, fault-tolerant quantum computer.

“We still have a long way to go from a research perspective,” says  Rafal Janik , Xanadu’s chief operating officer, who attended the New Frontiers event and talked about why the company recruits PhD graduates. “I think our entire team has post-graduate degrees. I think everybody has some connection to U of T from that space as well.”

The study also finds a notable uptick in private sector employment among PhD graduates in the life sciences, with nine per cent more graduates from 2016-2021 in industry jobs compared to the previous cohort.

The non-profit adMare BioInnovations is playing a role in moving PhD graduates’ research out of the lab so it can be turned into new treatments and therapies.

"The adMare Academy offers programming that enables PhD graduates and others to see the commercial potential in their research and to understand what it takes to translate that research into commercially viable therapeutics,” says  Ann Meyer , director of adMare’s BioInnovation Scientist Program.

It’s not only STEM fields where PhD grads are finding private sector employment.

The study shows that nine per cent of humanities graduates worked in the private sector in 2022, with many in this group exploring fields outside academia including media and publishing (15 per cent), arts and culture (35 per cent), education (10 per cent) and banking and finance (seven per cent).

At the same time, the post-secondary employment pattern for social sciences graduates remains steady. More than half are in tenure-track roles at Canadian universities, and a fifth are in teaching-focused positions at universities and colleges.

Overall, 47 per cent of all PhD graduates over the study period were employed in the post-secondary sector.

With about 1,000 PhD graduates a year, U of T trains one in seven of Canada’s doctorate holders and plays a pivotal role in advancing the exchange of ideas that drives Canada’s prosperity and progress.

“U of T is continually replenishing and rejuvenating the workforce across higher education,” Barker says. “These institutions, in turn, train the next generation of undergrad and graduate students who will go out and work across the economy.”

FHS PhD candidate wins national research excellence award

by Sharon Mah

PhD candidate Aniqa Shahid has won the Canadian Association for HIV Research’s (CAHR) New Investigator Award for Basic Sciences!

The award is given to the top young HIV basic sciences researcher in Canada who presents their work at CAHR’s annual conference.

This year, Shahid presented the findings from her recently published paper, “The replication-competent HIV reservoir is a genetically restricted, younger subset of the overall pool of HIV proviruses persisting during therapy, which is highly genetically stable over time” (link )

Modern antiretroviral therapies that are used to treat HIV are incredibly effective, but these medications must be taken for life. This is because HIV persists in the body even during long-term treatment. The copies of HIV that persist are called the "viral reservoir." Shahid's research seeks to understand reservoir evolutionary dynamics – that is, when these HIV copies first entered the reservoir and how long they persist there. Understanding this is critical to developing an HIV cure.

In her award-winning study, Shahid reconstructed HIV's within-host evolutionary histories in seven women living with the virus, and leveraged this information to understand their viral reservoirs. She found that participants viral reservoirs preserved HIV copies of a wide range of ages, from very old HIV sequences that entered the reservoir shortly after infection, to "younger" ones that were created around the time of therapy initiation. But, many of these persisting HIV copies, particularly the older ones, were genetically defective. In contrast, when Shahid specifically examined replication-competent viruses that emerged from the reservoir when HIV therapy was interrupted, she found that these were a genetically restricted and overall "younger" subset of HIV sequences. The key implication of this research is that HIV cure strategies may need to eliminate a reservoir that differs in key respects from the overall pool of HIV sequences that persist in the body.

Shahid was one of five new investigators honoured at the 33 rd Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research recently held in London, Ontario. The New Investigator Award recognizes promising new researchers in the areas of basic sciences, clinical sciences, epidemiology and public health, social sciences, and key populations research tracks.

Aniqa Shahid is supervised by FHS professor and British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS Laboratory Director, Zabrina Brumme.

Haider Ackermann has been appointed as the first-ever creative director of premium outerwear brand Canada Goose, the company announced today.

The Colombian-born French designer, better known for avant-garde luxury fashion and his eponymous label, will oversee all creative at the outerwear brand, which specialises in heavy-duty goose down parka jackets. He will be based in Paris and work alongside Canada Goose chairman and CEO Dani Reiss “to guide the company into its next era”, the brand said.

“What drew me to Canada Goose is not only how they have created a category, but also its authentic reputation and drive to stay committed to its purpose. The impact this brand has had on the world around us is meaningful and inspirational,” Ackermann said in a statement.

To mark the appointment, Ackermann has released a special Canada Goose hoodie in four colourways, retailing at $275, in support of non-profit Polar Bears International (PBI). The designer announced the hoodie on his Instagram, with a campaign featuring himself and long-time climate advocate Jane Fonda. His first full capsule collection will be released in October, according to the brand.

High-performance outerwear is a far cry from Ackermann’s luxury roots. But the designer’s eponymous label has stalled in recent years (the website closed in 2021), except for his high-profile celebrity dressing of names like Timothée Chalamet and Tilda Swinton. And this isn’t Ackermann’s first foray into performance-wear since rolling back his own brand: in November 2022, he collaborated with Fila on a sportswear collection and accompanying show in Manchester, England.

For Canada Goose, this long-term appointment follows a suite of luxury collaborations, including Marc Jacobs, Y/Project, Junya Watanabe and Vetements, as the brand aims to compete in the booming outerwear market amid growing competition from challenger brands like Arc’Teryx, and even techwear players such as Stone Island or CP Company.

“When it comes to the marriage of craftsmanship and beauty, there’s no one more fitting than Haider Ackermann,” said Canada Goose’s Reiss in a statement. “He intuitively understands Canada Goose as a brand apart from all others, and that authenticity, craftsmanship and performance are the cornerstones of our brand. With his distinct ability to harness the energy and potential of our authentic heritage, I look forward to seeing his impact across our designs.”

For Mormon Missionaries, Some ‘Big, Big Changes’

The church has loosened its strict rules for those evangelizing. And many members of Gen-Z are loving it.

Lauren attended church in London, Los Angeles and Paris and spoke with current and former missionaries to report this story.

  • May 10, 2024

Andres Gonzalez, 19, stands on the balcony of his Los Angeles apartment, his hands in his suit pockets. It is his first week as a missionary, but today, instead of approaching people on the street, he is shooting a video that he will later post to social media.

After about a dozen takes, he is successful. “Hello! If you would like to learn more about Jesus Christ,” he says to the camera in Spanish, “contact me.”

Mr. Gonzalez is the image of the modern missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has changed many of its practices — from how missionaries preach to how they dress.

The faith, long known for sending tens of thousands of neatly and formally dressed young people across the globe each year to preach door to door, is encouraging new missionaries to spread the gospel on social media and, for some, with acts of community service closer to home.

As a church leader, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, put it, missionaries should feel comfortable sharing their faith in “ normal and natural ways .”

In the last few years, the church has also changed some rules for missionaries themselves — loosening restrictions on dress codes ( women can wear pants ) and how often they can call family members back home ( once a week , not just on Christmas and Mother’s Day).

To outsiders, the adjustments may seem small. But to missionaries who adhere to strict rules while on assignment, the shifts are dramatic.

“We’ve seen a lot of big, big changes,” Jensen Diederich, 23, said. He served his mission in Peru and said it was “monumental” when the church allowed him to call home weekly, instead of just twice a year.

The church believes missionary work is essential for the world’s salvation — that people must be baptized in the faith to get to the highest level of heaven after they die. Missionary work also helps increase the church’s membership, and it deepens many young members’ faith. Many missionaries begin their assignments just after they leave home. Instead of partying on a college campus, they commit themselves to the religion and develop habits that can last a lifetime.

One of those members was Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, who was a missionary in France in the 1960s. He has said the isolation of his mission allowed him to examine his faith without distraction . When asked about the changes, he said, “For young people of my generation, I think the separation from family and friends served us well.”

Mr. Crawley, left, and Mr. Gonzalez, both wearing white dress shirts and ties, stand on a street. In front of them is a woman looking to the side. Mr. Gonzalez is holding a card in his hands.

But he understands times have changed. “With today’s youth in near constant contact with one another, maintaining greater connection during a mission fits their life experience,” he added.

Many young church members say the new rules have made missionary service more attractive and realistic.

Kate Kennington, a 19-year-old with a mission assignment to London, said finding people online and messaging them is a more successful way of approaching potential converts. “It’s how I would want to be contacted,” she said.

“Knocking on doors and approaching people on the street are no longer seen as useful as they once were because of shifts in American culture,” said Matthew Bowman, a professor of religion and history at Claremont Graduate University who holds the chair of Mormon studies. He is also a church member.

For decades, missionaries’ clean-cut suits were signs of prosperity, Mr. Bowman said, and an effective way of appealing to converts. But they now feel “outdated.”

Many of the changes, especially the push to evangelize on social media, were fueled by the pandemic, which shut down in-person church gatherings and forced Latter-day Saints and Jehovah’s Witnesses to find alternatives to door-to-door preaching.

The missionaries use their phones to film videos of themselves promoting the church or sharing messages of faith. In one video , a missionary raps about his faith. In another , two missionaries throw a football and a Frisbee through an obstacle course in a church gym — an object lesson meant to visualize how Jesus Christ can help people overcome challenges.

So far, the changes appear to be working: In the last three years, as pandemic restrictions lifted and young members responded to an appeal from the church’s top leader for them to serve, the number of full-time proselytizing missionaries has risen by around 25 percent , according to church data. At the end of last year, the church had about 72,000 full-time missionaries serving around the world.

The church has just under 17.3 million members globally but has seen growth slow. From 1988 to 1989, during a surge in growth when the church expanded into West Africa , the church grew by about 9 percent . Last year, the church grew by about 1.5 percent .

A tradition of travel

Missionary work is a rite of passage for Latter-day Saints — and has been since the church’s founding in 1830.

The church’s missionaries have traveled the world, growing their faith from a fledgling start-up in upstate New York to a global religion that brings in billions of dollars in revenue .

Church leaders say it is men’s responsibility to become missionaries for two years starting at age 18. Missionary work is optional for women, who serve for 18 months. The church has historically encouraged women to focus on marriage and motherhood. But since 2012, when the church lowered the age women could become missionaries to 19 from 21, more women have been going .

Missionaries leave their families and friends, learn new languages and spend the first years of their adulthood spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

While on a mission, they cannot date and must follow the religion’s ban on premarital sex, drinking, smoking, coffee and caffeinated tea. Communication with friends and family back home is restricted. They commit to stay focused on their work, and their proximity to their missionary partner creates a sense of accountability that keeps most from breaking the rules.

Until recently, the experience of young missionaries was similar to that of their parents. They first attended a missionary training center — a religious boot camp of sorts — before then traveling to their missions.

Most missionaries now start their training online at home , where the transition is less jarring. They can adapt to a mission schedule with their family’s support. Being home is also an opportunity for new missionaries to evangelize in their community.

“I’ve had friends who aren’t members of the church,” Tanner Bird, a 19-year-old missionary in Brazil who did part of his training at home in Houston. “And I just get super, super excited and talk to them about the gospel.”

Once deployed, men in some areas are allowed to wear blue shirts and go without ties , while women can wear wrinkle-resistant dress pants in “conservative colors.” Most missionaries now have smartphones and call their families weekly.

Some traditions remain: Young missionaries still do not get to pick their destinations. Many teenagers throw parties to open their assignments, reading their “call letter” aloud for the first time in front of family and friends. Others film elaborate announcement videos — including on ice skates . Some serve close to home (there are 10 missions in Utah). Others go as far as Tahiti or Tokyo.

Mr. Gonzalez, the missionary in Los Angeles, said he first imagined going on a mission when he was a child in Venezuela. His parents, who converted to the faith, often had young missionaries over for meals. After the church helped the family settle in Utah, he said serving as a missionary was part of his “American dream.”

Every morning, he wakes up at 6:30 a.m., the set time for many missionaries, with his “companion,” an assigned missionary partner. They are mandated to “never be alone,” with few exceptions, and each day follow a missionary schedule .

On Facebook, they contact people they have met, including those they have approached on the street in downtown Los Angeles. They also search groups for people who may be open to their message and post videos to generate interest in their faith. They keep track of potential converts’ progress, including lessons they teach. Every Monday, Mr. Gonzalez calls his parents.

Calls are also an opportunity for him to receive support. “It’s a little bit hard,” Mr. Gonzalez said of his mission work, describing people in downtown Los Angeles as “busy.” Still, he remains hopeful: “Some of them, they really are ready. They make time, even just like five minutes.”

The missionary experience is not for everyone. Some people feel isolated, find it difficult to adapt to a location, or struggle with the rules or the pressure to keep their commitment. Some people do leave early; the church does not comment on those who do.

Alex McAlpin, a 23-year-old who went on a mission to Denver, almost did not put in a missionary application. Before her mission, she attended Pepperdine University, where she wrestled with some aspects of church doctrine and history.

Then the church made its dress code change, allowing women to wear pants in 2018.

“That was the first day of my life that I thought maybe I would go” on a mission, Ms. McAlpin said. She saw the new dress code and the church’s other mission changes as a sign the church was evolving and listening to its younger members, many of whom hope their church will modernize in larger ways. “I wanted to be a part of the change.”

Ted Baker, Brooks Brothers launch liquidation sales in Canada

fashion phd in canada

The company that operates retailers Ted Baker, Lucky Brand and Brooks Brothers plans to close a number of stores in Canada and the United States after months of declining sales pushed the operations into insolvency proceedings.

Ted Baker Canada announced the launch of liquidation sales on Friday, covering nine out of 25 Ted Baker stores in Canada and all of the brand’s locations in the U.S. The sales also affect all Brooks Brothers and Lucky Brand stores in Canada.

The store closings follow shortly after Ted Baker’s British operations entered administration in March, a process under U.K. insolvency laws that allows companies to restructure or sell a business.

Ted Baker Canada was granted protection from its creditors on April 24 under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act in Canada, and on the same day commenced U.S. Chapter 15 bankruptcy proceedings. The company faces “liquidity constraints caused in part by negative cash flows and working capital issues,” according to documents filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

The North American operations fall under four companies – Ted Baker Canada Inc., Ted Baker Ltd., OSL Fashion Services Canada Inc. and OSL Fashion Services Inc. – which run the stores under licence with affiliates of New York-based Authentic Brands Group.

Authentic Brands also owns a number of retail and fashion labels, including Barneys, Forever 21, Juicy Couture, Nautica and Nine West. It owns the intellectual property of those brands and often licenses the retail operations to other companies.

In 2020, Authentic Brands partnered with U.S. mall operator Simon Property Group to purchase Brooks Brothers out of bankruptcy in a US$325-million deal, and also bought denim retailer Lucky out of bankruptcy for $140.1-million. Authentic Brands acquired U.K.-based Ted Baker for £211-million ($362-million) in 2022.

Management in North America blamed the financial troubles on “generally poor sales performance” in Canada and the U.S., according to court filings. The documents noted that the operations were also affected by supply chain disruptions, resulting from operating partners in Europe failing to pay suppliers leading up to and following the filing in Britain.

The licensees acquired the rights to the North American operations early last year. Since then, revenues have declined significantly and “the consolidated business has failed to achieve positive cash flow,” according to the court documents.

Amid the cash crunch, the North American operations stopped paying vendors, and owed more than $2-million to Authentic Brands Group as of April 1. That led Authentic to issue a “notice of breach” on April 17, giving it the right to terminate the North American licence agreements if the payments were not made within five business days. The companies then filed under CCAA in Canada and Chapter 15 in the U.S..

The following week, the companies sought court approval to liquidate the stores, writing in court documents that they had received no proposals “for other value maximizing alternatives.”

Many retailers have noted that Canadians who are feeling the pain of inflation and multiple interest-rate hikes have been cutting back on non-essential spending..

In some cases, luxury retailers have been less susceptible to these trends. However, brands such as Brooks Brothers and Ted Baker fall in the “premium” segment of the market just below luxury, and shoppers can be more price-sensitive, said retail consultant George Minakakis.

“If the brand is relevant, even in tough times, they’re doing well,” Mr. Minakakis said. “Stores that are doing well, the merchandising is amazing, they’re selling the brand story effectively, and they’re creating trends. I think Ted Baker and Brooks Brothers lost that some time ago.”

Some of the company’s stores could still be withdrawn from the liquidation process if a “going concern third party transaction” for some or all of the assets is identified before May 17, according to the court filings.

Liquidation firm Gordon Brothers Canada has been appointed to handle the sale, which will conclude within 12 weeks. Gordon Brothers has handled other retail insolvencies in the past, including Target Canada, Sears Canada, Bed Bath & Beyond Canada, the Mastermind Toys stores that closed before the chain was sold last year , and Nordstrom Canada.

Between April 28 and Aug. 4 – a period including the liquidation sales – Ted Baker Retail expects total sales of US$74.5-million and net cash flow of US$25.1-million, according to a forecast provided in the court filings.

Ted Baker has roughly 280 employees in Canada and 350 in the U.S. The retailer has not specified how many jobs may be cut as a result of the store closings.
