Why Honesty Isn't Always the Best Policy

The honest truth about honesty..

Posted October 6, 2013 | Reviewed by Kaja Perina

Whether you’re getting it off your chest, venting, expressing yourself, airing your feelings or “just being honest," the truth about honesty is that honesty is not always the best policy.

What’s more, continuing on the path of full disclosure can actually bring permanent closure to your relationships!

The reality is we don’t need knives or guns to mortally wound those closest to us. Words cut like knives and it’s easy to bury your relationship with the verbal cuts of a “truthful” tongue.

The truth is honesty is often a veiled form of self-indulgence.

What do I mean by self-indulgence?

In a nutshell, when feelings build up, it’s frustrating to “sit” on them. And, of course, it feels damn good to release them. That feel good sensation is a form of gratification. It’s like taking an emotional poop, which provides an instant release of pressure. But when we dump emotional turds on others, we are flushing our relationships down the toilet.

It’s a sad fact that our education at home and in school doesn’t include teaching us how to manage our angry feelings. Since intimate relationships trigger negative feelings, this means most of us are mistreating the people we love most by lashing out and even verbally killing those we supposedly love in various overt and symbolic ways.

In my book Kiss Your Fights Goodbye: Dr. Love’s 10 Simple Steps to Cooling Conflict and Rekindling Your Connection , I discuss so-called Fight Traps, which are the dysfunctional ways that humans act out anger. There’s a continuum of dumping that ranges from outright physical violence on the one end of the spectrum to far subtler forms of aggression —honesty being the subtlest of all forms of assault.

While we may feel temporarily relieved when we shoot off rounds of honesty, we pay a terrible price for this temporary satisfaction, as we harm our relationships and our own self-esteem (you can’t feel proud of yourself when you misbehave).

The good news is that you can make the decision to change the way you handle your angry feelings; to consider what you say before you speak, to ask yourself how the other person will feel before you say or do x, y or z. To consider whether what you intend to say or do will be helpful and constructive to the other person and your relationship.

It's also important to remember that anger is never the primary emotion . When we become angry, it’s because we usually feel other more basic and vulnerable feelings such as hurt, sadness and fear .

Making the decision to get beneath the veneer of anger and speak from the most vulnerable part of your emotional core is the ticket. When you honestly speak from this place, you arouse a feeling of empathy rather than antipathy. This one simple shift is your secret to turning conflict into connection by fostering a truly intimate and loving relationship that is based on the right kind of honesty.

Hence home and school are the best places for a child to develop Honesty since his/her growing times.

Home and school are the places where a child learns moral ethics. Thus, the education system should ensure to include some essential habits and practices to keep a child close to morality. Essay on Honesty is the Best Policy

Every human being must learn to be honest. Honesty means truth. If a person wants to be honest, he must learn to speak the truth in life. Moreover, by being honest, a person will develop a strong moral character, learn good behavior, maintain discipline, follow the rules and regulations intelligently, and will always be punctual.

Every child must have learned the phrase ‘honesty is the best policy.’ Children learn honesty from their parents, elders, and teachers. Still, people prefer to tell lies for their benefit Since the incidence of deceitful behavior is on a high, the revival of the teachings of honesty is necessary.

Benefits of Honesty

There are several benefits of honesty. Honesty helps in the development of morally strong characters. If you are honest, you will not be afraid of anything. You do not have to think about making false stories and then the fear of repeating the same in exact words. If you are honest, you do not have to remember any false stories. People will trust you more. An honest person will also develop discipline. An honest person will be extremely content, know what to do from time to time, and will not take any pressure or tension about anything. The health will improve, and the mind will be at peace. The person will be very punctual and will complete all tasks on time. Since more people will trust an honest person, he or she will find more friends and will be supported all around. An honest person will not be involved in cheating, lying, lack of trust, greed, stealing, and any other immoral acts.

Honesty promotes authenticity. It is a reflection of the thoughts and feelings of a person. It is a form of self-expression, and if a person is honest, people will know what he or she truly is. It also makes the person confident. To speak the truth, it needs a lot of courage and confidence. Only a coward will tell lies because he or she is afraid of the truth. Speaking the truth is an act of bravery. Telling lies also shows that the person is low on self-confidence.

Honesty brings maturity. An honest person speaks the truth in a mature, non-hurtful manner. Therefore, the person does not hurt others, and therefore, his or her relationship with others remains good. Such a good relationship develops a connection between people. Such good relationships also give you peace of mind. Therefore honesty brings high-quality and trustworthy friendships to a person.

Honesty makes a person feel free. They do not have to keep any secrets. They know what is right, and will speak it naturally. They do not have to take the tension of making a false story and say it, in the same manner, every time. Honesty keeps troubles away from a person.

How to Prevent Oneself from Lying?

People generally lie to avoid getting into trouble and to prevent hurting others. Honest people always have faith in the people whom they are talking to. It is wrong to assume that the listener will reject the truth. To be honest, people must have the courage to say the truth. No one likes to be lied to, and therefore, it is wrong to lie to others. People also have to be diplomatic in their presentation of the truth. They must not be blunt or rude, as it might hurt others. In this way, the true message reaches the listeners, and they take it in without getting emotionally hurt.

Is it okay to be Dishonest at Times

You were undoubtedly trained never to lie by your parents, who preached the importance of telling the truth. Your partner states that the most important thing is, to be honest.

But, according to studies, people do a lot of things wrong when it comes to deceit, truth-telling, and trust, and that, if mastered, lying the right way may actually help develop relationships, trust, and businesses.

You are also more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you realize imagine your mother telling you to tell your grandmother how much you enjoyed her food, or you providing incomplete feedback to a coworker.

LYING CAN BE JUSTIFIED IN THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS

If you are Looking out for Someone's Best Interests:

There are many examples of lying being harmful, and the most harmful lies are those that promote your self-interest at the expense of others.

According to a study, "prosocial" lies—falsehoods intended to benefit others—can help people create trust.

Just keep in mind that lies are most effective when they are not self-serving. It is one thing to tell your friend he or she looks beautiful before a date to boost their self-esteem. However, be warned, saying it solely to push your friend out of the door because you are already late - that might drive you into a selfish zone.

If There is Not Enough Time to Make a Modification:

Let's say your mate inquires about how you think he or she looks shortly before coming on stage for a speaking engagement, or just before reaching the podium, about what you think of the speech. Consider whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the issue, even if you see a stain on his or her dress or think the speech may be improved.

You might accept deception if there is nothing your partner can do to improve or change things right now. As there is nothing he or she can do at the time, lying in this sense is typically comprehended as something which is benefiting the person at the receiving end.

If your significant other can react to the knowledge, however, honesty is the superior option.

If the Person is Not Close to you:

Deception that is mild and well-intentioned can be even more effective in long-distance relationships. Honesty is a lot more perilous in more competitive equations or first interactions, and it can damage relationships and reduce the amount of trust. That is because neither party knows the other's genuine motives, and they may ask aloud, "Is this individual trying to undermine me?"

Still, if you're inclined to provide candid comments to a distant acquaintance or a buddy of a friend, go ahead. Providing the truth while being benevolent—something along the lines of, "I truly want you to succeed, so I am giving you this feedback."

Close friendships, on the other hand, can foster a greater appreciation for candor, and confessing to friends is probably not as horrible as you think. We consistently underestimate how difficult it will be, to tell the truth.

Being honest may not always be easy, but it is always the right thing to do.

Benefits of Being Honest

There are many benefits to being honest. For one, honesty builds trust. People are more likely to trust someone who is honest with them. This can lead to better relationships and more opportunities in life.

The Negative Effects of Lying

Lying has many negative effects that can be felt both short-term and long-term. In the short-term, lying can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety. These feelings can be compounded if the lie is discovered, leading to further embarrassment and a loss of trust. In the long-term, habitual lying can damage relationships, both personal and professional. It can also lead to depression and anxiety, as well as a general sense of mistrust and dissatisfaction with life.

Repercussions of Dishonesty

Dishonesty has far-reaching consequences that can destroy personal relationships, damage your reputation, and jeopardize your career. This is an honest act because they are not doing it for any personal gain, but instead they are helping others out of the goodness of their hearts. Finally, another example of honesty in society is when someone returns lost property to its rightful owner. This is an honest act because the person could have kept the property for themselves, but instead they did the right thing and returned it to its rightful owner.

Honesty is the key to success and leads to a better, more satisfying life. It might be difficult to live by this principle all of the time, but it’s important for us to strive for integrity in our actions and words. Honesty should always be our priority when making decisions or engaging with others. If we are honest, not only will those around us benefit from our truthfulness, but so will ourselves as we gain trustworthiness and respect from those who value such qualities. Ultimately, honesty is the best policy because it can lead to positive outcomes within yourself and your relationships with others.

It is noticed that often simple topics that we have been hearing and writing about for many years are the ones that become the most difficult to write. One such topic is   'Honesty is the Best Policy' IELTS essay. Here is how you can write an engaging and advanced essay on it.

Table of Contents

Honesty is the best policy essay: sample 1, essay on honesty is the best policy: sample 2, more essays samples to explore:.

The origin of this proverb  honesty is the best policy can be attributed to Sir Edwin Sandys. He was an official of Virginia Company who had used the phrase in one of his writings in the 1500s. It is an irrefutable fact that modernization and evolution are all by-products of universal progression. Moreover, honesty, which was very common in ancient times, is now as rare as hens’ teeth. In consonance with this, it can be easily apprehended that the breakthrough has not only encouraged external evolutions but has also blazingly impacted the consciences of beings.

The rareness of honesty cannot modify its ultimate consequence- actualizing an ethical character. Nature functions on the mechanism of giving and taking. Every development does have a cost, as the progression of technology leads to more cyber crimes. Universal progression has not only evolved individuals in terms of lifestyles but has also affected their mindsets and the basic values being rendered to them. The traits which were seen as unlikely earlier, like greed, dishonesty, etc., are now predominant.

Selfishness is the trait that has turned ways around even for honest personalities. It has become complex to understand the fact that honesty is ideally engraved, even if you are selfish. It is time to perceive how being honest will make your life full of grace, gratitude, and gratefulness. Keep the 3G's handy by being honest.

Salient benefits of preaching honesty:

  • Builds an established and didactic character,
  • Augments the persona of a “credible” person,
  • Attracts quality acquaintances rather than quantity,
  • Backs in being more prudent and disciplined,
  • Guides to be accountable for own, etc.

The ways for showcasing honesty can be tweaked, but in the long run, honesty must be practiced as a sole medium of paving the way through.

The essay topic is a resurgence of the old proverb reminding me what honesty means and what ceaseless good it brings. To me, honesty lies in everything that does not pinch my conscience. I feel it is cosmic and empowers individuals to build a bright future.

From the teachings of the past to the subsequent action, honesty was prevalent. It is for this reason that, as a child, I never experienced or witnessed the consequence of delinquency. Being true was colossal, and another way round was nefarious. Moral science was a perpetual life skill and, surprisingly, never seemed boring. I felt pride in speaking the truth, even when I got no rewards.

As opposed to that, kind, fragile, loving, gentle, honest, and likes of these emotions are weak words in the epoch that relies on quantification. Today, fastidiousness and other capricious ways, such as an over-exposure to the internet and the quantity of 'followers', have become the marshal fact to kindle happiness. Just like 'life' today is replaced with 'trend', the word 'Honesty' is often interchangeably used with expedience, making 'honesty is the best policy' no more than an obsolete idiom.

Honesty can be of many types and is used subjectively. Any modification that is untrue can be categorized as dishonesty. For example, using filters for online dating is also a form of cheating as you are not showing your real self; although, people don't find using the tiara or flowers as filters dishonest. Hence the word 'expedience' is more apt than using 'Honesty'. At the same time, a dog showering love on its caretaker is an honest embodiment.

Honesty reflects prudence, the integrity of character, and morality. And if what you are doing shows any of these, you have thought back for good!

Honesty Isn’t Always the Best Policy in Relationships. Here’s When Experts Say It Might Be Better to Lie

Fingers crossed behind back

Y ou were probably taught to never lie: Your parents likely preached the power of the truth . Your partner told you honesty matters most.

But researchers say there is a lot we get wrong about deception, truth-telling and trust—and that, if mastered, lying the right way can actually help build connections, trust and businesses. “I believe that we should be teaching our kids, students and employees when and how to lie,” says Maurice Schweitzer, a professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, who studies deception and trust.

You’re more likely to be lied to (and told to lie) than you even realize, too—think of scenarios like your mom reminding you to tell your grandmother you enjoyed her meal, or you giving feedback to a co-worker that doesn’t capture the whole truth.

Still, the art of deception is more nuanced than you might think. Here, five scenarios where fibbing might be the best course of action, according to experts.

If you have someone’s best interests at heart

There are classic examples of lying being detrimental , and the most damaging kinds of lies tend to be those that promote your own self-interests at the expense of others.

But “prosocial” lies—fibs intended to benefit others—can actually build trust between people, according to research .

“People’s primary interest, at least when they receive information and build trust is in benevolence,” says Emma E. Levine, an assistant professor of behavioral science at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, who studies honesty and trust. “People care about whether you have good intentions a lot more than whether the person is being honest per se.”

Just remember: Lies are most beneficial when they’re not selfish. If you tell your partner he or she looks great before a date to boost his or her self-esteem, that’s one thing, Schweitzer says. But saying it just to get your loved one out the door because you’re already late, he says, is where your motive can veer into selfish territory.

If there’s no time to change

Say your partner asks you how he or she looks right before walking on stage for a speaking event, or enquires about what you think of the speech just prior to reaching the podium. Even if you notice a stain on his or her outfit, or think the speech could use work, think about whether the person has the time to react to the information and control the situation, says Levine.

If there’s nothing your partner can do to improve or make a change in that moment, you might welcome deception, she says. Lying in this sense is likely seen as benefitting the other person because there’s truly nothing he or she can do in the moment.

Conversely, if your significant other does have the capacity to react to the information, honesty is the better choice, Levine says.

If you’re giving constructive criticism

When sharing feedback, honesty is important. And while it’s easy to use “I’m just being honest” as an excuse for “just being mean,” says Schweitzer, brutal honesty isn’t always the most effective way to get your message across.

Instead of telling a low-performing employee that he’s performing terribly, consider saying something like, “You’ve had a rocky start, but everyone struggles at the beginning,” then segueing into constructive criticism, says Schweitzer. Your feedback will likely be received better which in turn will benefit your business in the long run.

Right before a special occasion

The debate over lying is not only about whether honest information can help the situation, but also whether that information is delivered at the right time. “One thing people care about is whether honest information will distract them from something important,” says Levine.

An example: You hear your friend’s company is expecting layoffs right before she leaves for her wedding. Should you tell her?

“In these situations, people tend to appreciate withholding the truth until later,” says Levine.

It comes back to the idea of control—if your friend is about to leave for her wedding or honeymoon, she won’t be in a position to preemptively explore other job opportunities. And while every situation is different, consider asking yourself whether honesty in a situation like this would truly benefit the other person—or simply be a distraction, according to Levine.

If you’re not close with the person

Mild and well-intentioned deception can be even more beneficial in distant relationships, says Levine. “In more competitive relationships or first interactions, honesty is a lot more precarious, can damage relationships and reduce trust,” she says. That’s because both parties are less familiar with the other person’s true intentions and they each might wonder, is this person trying to undermine me?

Still, if you’re inclined to give honest feedback to a more distant acquaintance or a friend of a friend, Levine suggests providing the truth coupled with benevolence—something along the lines of, I really want you to do well, so I’m giving you this criticism.

Close relationships, on the other hand, can give way to more of an appreciation for honesty, she says, and confessing to friends is likely not as bad as you think. “We systematically overestimate how uncomfortable truth-telling will be,” Levine says.

Honesty is the best policy – Essay 1

Honesty, a habit that must be inherent by every individual born on the planet. Honesty implies being truthful. To make it simpler, we often judge the individual to be honest if he practices speaking truth.  If you are honest enough, you bear a sense of confidence and a positive aspect of your life.

A person who possesses honesty in his/her life possesses an ethical way of living life. An honest person shows good behaviour, he always follows rules and regulations, maintains discipline, is always punctual, and speaks the truth.

In short, an honest person is trustworthy as he always follows the right path and believes in speaking truth.

To make Honesty applicable in our life. We often say, “honesty is the best policy”. It is a wise phrase. Probably, every child learns this teaching from their parents. To an extent, making life full of ethical nature is the parent’s role. This beautiful teaching has been though since the time being immortal. However, its practice has certainly fallen short. Nowadays, People lies very frequently. Furthermore, there is a lot of things that are completely involved in corruption these days.

People deceive each other by being dishonest. Therefore, there is an urgent need to face the mirror of life.

Benefits of Honesty is the best policy

A famous quote as given by great personality is, “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom”. It holds to be a positive and good feature due to its ability to build, motivate, and shape integral values in our life.

To develop moral components within us, we need to look for some important aspects of life, and Honesty is one among those. Honesty helps to develop positive attributes like truthfulness, discipline, moral integrity, kindness, and much more.

If we talk about the elimination part, we should be focused to overcome the lack of trust, steal, lying, cheating, greed, and some other important attributes. These aspects have no place when we talk about Honesty or being Honest.

  • Honest people are sincere, loyal, and trustworthy throughout their life. Honesty is valuable and is a habit of utmost importance.
  • Honesty promotes Authenticity. If you are honest, you will reflect on one’s feelings and thoughts. Certainly, honesty helps in knowing who you are. Therefore, one must be honest in self – expression.
  • To speak trust, a person requires a lot of courage. However, to fake out a lie, all you need is a jumble of words. This shows the difference and the courage one has to reveal to lead a part of Honesty.
  • Honesty removes fear from the Heart. It makes people confident and courageous. Speaking truth is a part of bravery. The one who lies is a coward. Also, speaking falsehood is a sign of low self – confidence.
  • Another feature to highlight is Maturity. Honesty certainly reflects the maturity of a person. An individual’s personality reflects positive signs if he practices honesty. Also, if you are mature enough, you will speak the trust without even hurting the feelings of others.
  • The discussion could not end if we forget about our self – peace i.e. the peace of mind. Being honest makes you feel free. An honest person reflects light-headed feelings. The reason is that he is not stuck in the stress and tensions of lying. Moreover, he does not have to deal with keeping secrets. All this feels makes him more relaxing.
  • Additionally, an individual’s reputation is also attached to the power of being Honest. He enhances his reputation and status in society if he practices honesty. Everyone seems to be fond of such an honest person. Also, it is very easy for an honest person to generate trust with other people.
  • Honesty keeps all the troubles away. A lie can provide some sort of temporary relief for an individual but in the long run, this is going to be his own fatal. Lies pull a person into more and more trouble. It even makes a person more habitual of being a liar. He/she continuously engages in speaking lies. One lie can lead to a hundred more lies.

Therefore, one must be truthful from the beginning. All this means is that one must stay honest in every situation that crosses the way.

Being honest will certainly result in high – quality friends. Also, with the high – quality you might even get to enjoy a long-lasting friendship with those who deserve. This friendship will be very close and strong which involves such individuals.

How to Avoid lying?

To stop lying is a tough path if you are a chronic liar. But it is not an impossible task. Although this will result in long-lasting fruitful results. One must not assume that others will not accept the truth.

Gather up your courage. This will help you to speak what you wish to and, in the end, you will end up saying all that is true. Though it requires courage but is certainly good. It is not the job of a faint-hearted person.

Try to think the other way. Do you wish to be lied? No, if you don’t consider this for yourself, how can you apply it for others. Assuming this way will structure you as being a remote thinker.

Before speaking the truth, always try to structure your words. Furthermore, always ensure not to speak rude or blunt.

The fact that honesty is a tough path in today’s world is completely acceptable. But keeping in mind the positive sides of Honesty, we must mould ourselves.

Honesty is the best policy, is of significant importance. In this dark word, Honesty is the light of hope.

To make honesty a practice, try to find situations where you can prove yourself of being honest. In some attempts, you might think of dropping the plan but sooner or later, you will enjoy the circumstances. Honesty is the power that prevails in the mind and soul of a person.

Therefore, honesty must prevail while the falsehood must be perished.

Honesty is the best policy – Essay 2

Honesty is a deserving praise for anyone in any walk of life. Dishonesty may bring instant success, but in the long run it will only bring disaster.

Indeed, honesty is the best policy. An honest person is admired and respected by others. Other people know that they can trust him or her and that he or she is a dependable and reliable person.

They know that even if they do something wrong, he or she will own up to it. He or she will never try to make excuses, blame others or tell lies.

When a person tells lies often, very soon, people realize that he or she is a terrible liar. They avoid him or her, and know that he or she is not to be trusted. They do not believe anything that he or she says, for it could be a lie.

People have no respect for such a person. Gandhiji always spoke the truth, even if he knew that he would be punished for what he said.

The guiding principles of his entire life were truth and ahimsa, and he taught this to everyone. Today he is revered and admired all over the world.

So it is up to us to decide which path we wish to take: the path of righteousness and honesty or the path of slyness and dishonesty.

Speaking truth is often difficult in many circumstances, but truth remains long lasting, a person is identified by his/her deeds.

What make a person remembered? His deeds, that how he/she was. It is human tendency to speak lies, but you often avoid speaking lies.

If a person catch you speaking lie, then he will never believe on you, truth as its own power, even sometimes you spoke lie, then also they will believe on you, because they knew that you speaks truth only.

Speaking Truth has a different impact.  It is better that you should follow, the famous proverb saying words, that “Honesty is the best policy” and it cannot be avoided.

Story on Honesty is the Best policy

We all have read a story about the woodcutter and mercury in school life.  The story was that, one day a woodcutter’s axe accidentally fell into a river. The river at the spot was deep and its current was swift.

The woodcutter tried hard but he could not find his axe. He was very sad. Mercury, the messenger of god, saw the sad woodcutter and took pity on him.

Don’t worry. I will bring you your axe, said Mercury to the wood cutter and dived into the river. Mercury came out of the river with an axe of gold and offered it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter said, “That is not mine. I can’t take it.”

Once again Mercury went down into the river and this time returned with an axe made of pure silver. The honest woodcutter said, “That is not my axe either.”

So Mercury dived into the river a third time. This time he brought with him a crude axe made of iron.

“That’s it,” cried the woodcutter joyfully and rushed to Mercury to take it.

Mercury was pleased with the poor man’s honesty. He gave him both the gold axe and the silver axe as a reward for his honesty.

The English language is full of idioms, or phrases and expressions that have a meaning unrelated to the actual words in the phrase. When it comes to “honesty is the best policy,” though, what you see might just be what you get. In this article, we’ll dive into the meaning of “honesty is the best policy,” plus show you how to use it and where it comes from. We’ll also explore the psychological and philosophical reasons why telling the truth is good for you and others. Honestly!

Things You Should Know

  • “Honesty is the best policy” is a proverb that means it’s best to tell the truth instead of lie, even when it seems difficult to do so.
  • Say “honesty is the best policy” to remind yourself that you’ll feel better after telling the truth, or to offer advice to someone facing a dilemma.
  • Telling the truth is linked to better mental and physical health. It also improves your sense of authenticity, leadership abilities, and makes others trust you.

“Honesty Is the Best Policy” Meaning

“Honesty is the best policy” is a proverb meaning it’s best to tell the truth.

  • By being honest, you’ll gain the trust and respect of others and you won’t have to maintain any lies or deceive people you care about.
  • Here's an example of how someone might use this phrase: “You should tell your friends the truth about what happened last night so you don’t have to keep lying, son. Honesty is the best policy, after all.”

How to Use “Honesty Is the Best Policy”

Step 1 Remind yourself that you’ll feel better later on if you’re honest now.

  • “I can’t believe I scratched my mom’s car! Well, I better rip the band-aid off since she’ll find out about it anyway. Honesty is the best policy, I guess!”
  • “I opened up about my mental health struggles, and it turns out a lot of people can relate! I wished I stopped hiding it sooner. Honesty really is the best policy!”

Step 2 Use the phrase...

  • Them: “I’m really upset with Brad for forgetting my birthday, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it to say something.” You: “Well, I say honesty is the policy. He’ll never know he hurt you if you don’t say something.”
  • Them: “I don’t know what to do! I accidentally printed the wrong version of those reports for the Board meeting today.” You: “Well, I’d let the Board know there was a mix-up and that you’re working on getting the right reports. Honesty is the best policy, and it’s better that they know you’re working on a solution than to have them think you didn’t catch it at all.”

Origins of “Honesty Is the Best Policy”

The idea of “Honesty is the best policy” has roots in multiple cultures.

  • One of the earliest recordings of the actual phrase in English comes from 1605. In his Europae Speculum , English politician Sir Edwin Sandys wrote, “Our grosse conceipts, who think honestie the best policie.”
  • Many famous American politicians and Founding Fathers have also popularized, written, or used the phrase in speeches, including Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and more.
  • The 1st President of the United States, George Washington, used the phrase in his farewell speech to the nation: “I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy."

Reasons Why Honesty Is Important

Step 1 Lying less is linked to better physical and mental health.

  • The link isn’t totally clear scientifically, but the results show that lying less can put you at ease and make you feel better overall.

Step 2 Telling the truth builds stronger relationships.

  • Being honest and transparent is key to a good relationship. People that love and care about you are likely very attuned to you and can sense when your words lack harmony with your feelings or actions.

Step 3 You’ll feel and appear more authentic.

  • A solid sense of authenticity is linked to increased happiness and life satisfaction, too.

Step 4 You’ll feel more secure in your abilities.

  • When you're honest and accept failures, though, you fully understand what your abilities are and can put in the time and effort to improve them, which increases your confidence and security.

Step 5 Honesty makes you a more effective and trusted leader.

  • Honesty also helps you be more comfortable being yourself at work, which improves your relationships with colleagues and the people you manage.

Step 6 People trust you more.

  • There’s always a respectful and polite way to tell the truth when it might hurt someone . However, there are not many instances where it’s respectful to lie.

Step 8 Your opinion has more value to others.

  • Most people crave honesty, even when they may not like what they hear. Be empathetic when you tell the truth and try to understand how it may make someone feel. That way, you can choose the kindest words and deliver your message constructively.

Step 9 Lying takes a lot of work and energy.

  • This doesn’t mean that all lies are dangerous to others. For example, if someone chooses not to buy concert tickets because you said they were more expensive than they really were, they may choose not to go to the concert. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve violated their autonomy, but they probably missed out on a great time!

White lies are usually OK when they spare people from unnecessary hurt.

  • On the other hand, telling them “This cake is awful!” would make them upset and wouldn’t benefit them, you, or your relationship (especially because there’s nothing they can do about the cake once it’s baked).
  • Consider if there’s a way to tell the truth without being harsh. In the birthday cake example, you could say “Wow! I’ve never had a flavor quite like this before,” or “I love trying new cakes!” so that you’re not being dishonest.
  • However, white lies can take a small toll on you. For example, if you always say “I’m fine!” when people ask about your recent breakup, you may not feel like you have the support you need while you go through a difficult time because everyone thinks you’re alright.

Honesty is not always the best policy 3 Pages 750 Words

Honesty is not Always the Best Policy              I always tried to tell the truth but sometimes, being truthful isn't always the best. There are times when we might want to avoid the full truth, or even tell a lie, in order to protect someone's feelings, or prevent a conflict. I believe we all have to lie or even obscure the truth once in our life. There are three incidents that I can think of when it was best to lie and obscure the truth. When my little young niece asked about her childhood fantasies such as Tooth Fairy or Santa Clause ever existed. I didn't want to be coldhearted to tell her they don't exist. When someone is ill and hospitalized, it is better not to tell him or her the negative thoughts. Negative thoughts have always struck down patient's consciousness of fighting with illness. When my mother asked my father if she was getting too fat. My father had to lie to avoid a conflict and argument with my mother.              Young children are most likely curious about their childhood fantasies such as Tooth Fairy and Santa Clause. We all remember when we were little kids, our parents never told us that Tooth Fairy and Santa Clause are phonies. As we are becoming adults now, we keep the custom and lie to young children that Tooth Fairy and Santa Clause do exist. Have we felt guilty lying to children about their childhood fantasies? Of course not, because we don't want to destroyed or disappointed children's childhood fantasies. We never heard kids obsess with their fantasies at their childhood or there are cases, which childhood fantasies affect children as they grow up. But we have experienced how disappointed children would be when they find out their childhood fantasies are phonies. Childhood fantasies are stories that children need as they grow up. It makes children have hope and expectation for their lives. Therefore, it is okay to tell children "white lies" to protect them...
