Integrate Learning and Development Practices to Facilitate Growth

The B.S. in Early Childhood Development and Education program at UCF prepares you to impact a diverse population of young children and families using research-based, developmentally appropriate practices. Your coursework will provide you with the knowledge and skills in many areas, including child development, social and emotional development, assessment and literacy. Here, we believe that all children deserve a strong foundation in a safe and nurturing environment, using a constructive approach to learning.

With two tracks available, you’ll have the opportunity to choose a path that aligns with your professional and personal goals. Both tracks include practical application work as a way to help students apply what they learn by participating in multiple school and agency opportunities. The early childhood development and education program also works closely with the UCF Creative School, which is an NAEYC-accredited child care program on campus. You’ll work closely with faculty to create your individual plan, which may include practicum placements at top organizations such as Nemours and Arnold Palmer children’s hospitals, Make a Wish Foundation, Orlando Science Center, Children’s Home Society, United Cerebral Palsy, Head Start and Early Head Start, among others.

Education, Pre-Kindergarten through Primary (K-3) Track (certification) The certification track allows you to explore teaching pedagogy and instructional practices focusing on early childhood education. It’s a great option if you’re interested in teaching pre-kindergarten through third grade. This track meets the educational requirements for certification in pre-kindergarten through third grade. Upon graduating from this Florida state-approved teacher preparation program and passing all three Florida Teacher Certification Examinations, you’ll qualify for the Professional Florida Educator’s Certificate. Additionally, you will graduate with ESOL and Reading Endorsements.

Early Childhood Development Track (non-certification) In this track, you’ll take a series of core and specialization courses that prepare you to work with children, parents and families in a variety of settings. Your coursework will cover children’s literature and family systems, as well as courses that meet the requirements to become a certified child life specialist. Child life specialists work in hospital settings and help reduce the stress and anxiety children and families experience related to healthcare and hospitalization. Please note that you will not become certified upon completing this program as there are additional requirements to meet post-graduation. This degree culminates in a semester-long practicum.

These range from community colleges offering associates in early childhood development or human services, to nationally ranked universities that offer a wide spread of masters level and education endorsement-level programming. While future students may want to go to the “best” online institution in their state for education degrees, they should take some to double check what exact degrees are offered by their institution of choice at the directory of all online education degrees at the bottom of the page. To select the following top five universities, we’ve looked at two factors: the number of fully online education degrees offered by an institution, and an “academic prestige” score. The academic prestige score takes into account metrics such as average amount of financial need received, average class sizes, admissions standards, and the percentage of faculty holding terminal degrees in their field. Also note that the tuition numbers below are just indicators of relatively how expensive or affordable a college is. The tuition numbers below, specifically, are the in-state (where applicable) undergraduate yearlong tuition rates for education degrees. Many universities, however, have similar tuition rates at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Florida ranked in this list as one of worst states for early education quality. Here's why

Early education child care workers and preschool teachers in Florida only get paid around $10 to $12 an hour to provide learning foundations for the state’s children who are not yet of age for kindergarten.

And the median wage for preschool or child care center directors statewide has dropped by about 14% since 2017, down to around $20 an hour, according to the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment.

Although quality education for high schoolers, middle and elementary students is important, the quality of education at the preschool level is just as crucial to providing foundations for academic success.

A recent study released by WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 12 metrics, including share of school districts that offer a state pre-K program, number of pre-K quality benchmarks met and total reported spending per child enrolled in pre-K.

Here’s how Florida ranked nationally for the quality of its early education system.

What is Florida’s rank in early education compared to other states?

Florida took 40th place out of WalletHub’s 51 rankings for overall early education quality. The rankings were created using 12 metrics.

Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the highest quality of early education. The scores for each metric were averaged to create an overall ranking for each state and the District of Columbia.

Here are the metrics WalletHub used:

  • Share of school districts that offer state pre-K program
  • Share of 3 and 4-year-olds enrolled in state pre-K program
  • Share of 3- and 4-year-olds enrolled in pre-K, pre-K special education and head start programs
  • The presence of waiting lists or frozen intake for child care assistance
  • Pre-K quality benchmarks met. This metric considers the following benchmarks: Early learning and development standards, curriculum supports, teacher has a bachelor's degree, specialized training in pre-K, assistant teacher has CDA or equivalent, staff professional development, class size 20 or lower, staff-to-child ratio of 1:10 or better, vision, hearing, & health screening & referral, continuous quality improvement system.
  • Income requirement for state pre-K eligibility
  • Requirement of school safety plans and audits
  • Total reported spending per child enrolled in preschool. This metric considers the amount of all reported funds (local, state, and federal) spent per child participating in pre-K programs.
  • Change in state spending per child enrolled in preschool (2018-19 to 2019-20 school years)
  • Total state head start program spending per child enrolled in preschool
  • Monthly child care co-payment fees as share of family income

What state has the best preschools?

Here’s WalletHub’s full list of rankings for overall quality of early education systems by state:

  • District of Columbia
  • South Carolina
  • Rhode Island
  • Connecticut
  • West Virginia
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Dakota
  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • New Hampshire

Top 5 indicators in evaluating the best and worst early education systems

Here are 5 key factors in evaluating the quality of early education systems , according to Julia Kroeker, a professor of Early Childhood Education at Florida SouthWestern State College:

  • The most important factor for a quality early learning program is the people: hiring (and retaining) quality educators who give children individual attention (small class sizes) and having a highly qualified and caring director or principal.
  • For a program to be high-quality, the children must have access to high-quality, safe materials that they can use creatively.
  • The building and outdoor area should be safe and in good repair. There should be good ventilation, natural light, and ample space for children to move about the classrooms.
  • Parent and family involvement.
  • Developmentally appropriate expectations. This means that young children are allowed the freedom to explore and play and movement and play are built into the day. Children are seated in groups for collaborative work rather than individual desks. Kindergarten children should not be expected to sit in desks for long periods of time, completing worksheets independently. Young children should not be expected to eat lunch in complete silence but should be able to talk with their friends while they eat.

How much does childcare cost in Florida?

According to Winnie, a marketplace for child care that helps parents find daycare and preschools, the average cost of full-time daycare in Florida is $740 each month.

The cost of high-quality early education is out of reach for a lot of Florida families, but there is subsidized help available. Options are available to help defer the cost of tuition for qualifying families, from county-issued subsidies, to free pre-K programs.

One of the options available for Florida families is the Florida Department of Education's School Readiness Program , which offers assistance to low-income families for childcare.

According to Winnie, you can find eligibility requirements and apply for the program by visiting your county’s early learning coalition website.

Do you want to influence and shape the lives of young children and their families? If so, our Early Childhood Education (ECED) program is a great place to start.

About the Program

Our Early Childhood Education (ECED) is designed to allow you to meet the requirements for various levels of entry into the early childhood field and, if you choose, articulate with UH Mānoa’s and UH West O‘ahu’s bachelor’s degree programs in Education.

Our ECED program consists of two pathways: Infant–Toddler option or Preschool option. Both options combine class assignments with field experience (practicum), and take place on-campus and in the community. Upon completion of either option, you’ll have met the requirements for various levels of entry into the early childhood field!

You’ll have an opportunity to earn various certificates as you progress through the program, leading to an associate’s degree. There are also childcare facilities on-campus at Honolulu Community College, Kapiolani Community College, and Leeward Community College, where you can gain practical, real-life experience working with young children during your practicum.

If you have a National Child Development Association (CDA) credential that is still valid, you may be eligible to receive college credit. For more information, contact the ECED program counselor .

Criminal history record checks are a workplace requirement in early education and care settings. The criminal history record check must be completed satisfactorily within two weeks of enrollment into ECED 191, Field Based Practicum in Early Childhood. The cost of the record check, currently $24, is the responsibility of the student.

The program provides candidates with varied opportunities to develop their skills for working with children and families and with a general understanding of the field of early education and care. Students who successfully complete this degree may transfer to the Early Childhood Concentration in the Social Sciences Program at the University of Hawai‘i-West O’ahu. Prior Learning Credit

The Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program recognizes that learning takes place in a variety of environments, not just in a college classroom. Work experience, professional development, volunteer training, and community involvement in the ECE field, for example, may be considered college-equivalent learning. The ECE program has created several options for Prior Learning Credit for students to demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills and request for credit in lieu of completing coursework.

Students with a current Child Development Associate (CDA), awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition, may apply for credits for ECED 105, ECED 110, ECED 151F, and ECED 151S by submitting an official CDA certificate to the ECED academic counselor.

Credit by Examination is available for ECED 105, ECED 110, and ECED 131. Eligible students who learned the course content through previous training or experience, but did not receive college credit for the course may apply for credit by examination by contacting the ECE Program Coordinator.

A Portfolio-Based Assessment (PBA) is a type of Prior Learning Credit where students prepare a portfolio to provide evidence of learning aligned with course learning outcomes. Students will also present their portfolio. The documentation and presentation is reviewed by a committee of ECE experts who determine if the student’s documentation and evidence meets the course learning outcomes for the requested course. If the determination is positive, the student receives credits applicable to the requested course. PBA’s are available for ECED 115 and ECED 245.
