Formerly known as Atlantic Broadband, Breezeline is a growing cable internet provider that offers fast speeds and a wide variety of TV bundles. It’s mostly available on the East Coast and in parts of the South and Midwest, and it also has fiber internet in some limited areas.

Its internet plans come at cheap starting prices. You don’t have to worry about data caps, nor do you have to sign up for an annual contract. But watch out for the massive price hikes that hit six months into your service.

Breezeline’s speeds: What’s best for you?

Breezeline offers a standard range of speed tiers. The Base Internet package offers 100 Mbps, which is actually pretty fast if you live in a small household and don’t have too many Wi-Fi devices.

Unlimited Fast Internet and Unlimited UltraFast Internet are better for larger households where more than four people regularly work, stream, and game on the same Wi-Fi. Unlimited GigaFast Internet is a deluxe option that’s only necessary if you have 10 housemates or you’re a regular Twitch streamer, or both.

Take a look at our “How Much Internet Speed Do I Need?” tool to get a better idea of what internet plan works best for you.

Breezeline’s data caps

Breezeline doesn’t have any data caps on its internet plans. You can stream, game, and make Zoom calls as much as you want all month long without worrying about overage charges or slowed speeds. That’s one thing we really like about this cable provider.

Is Breezeline internet available where you live?

Enter your zip code below to see a listing of the top internet providers available in your area.

Our favorite plan: You really can’t go wrong with Breezeline’s Unlimited Fast Internet plan. This cable package gives you excellent download speeds of 200 Mbps, which can handle a great deal of streaming, gaming, and video calling. The starting price is less than $50 a month—a steal for speeds that fast.

After six months, the plan reverts to the current retail price (or “Everyday price,” as Breezeline calls it) of $87.19 per month. That’s not exactly cheap, and there are other internet companies that give you internet at a fixed rate. But it’s not too bad for what you get.

Does Breezeline offer internet and TV bundles?

Yes, Breezeline offers a variety of internet and TV bundles. Prices start at $55 or $75 per month when you combine the Base Internet or Fast Internet plan with the most basic TV plan.

From there you can add on additional packages—see our chart below for all the details. The prices can get pretty steep, though, since Breezeline requires that customers stack TV plans on top of each other. So in order to get Family+, for example, you also need to order Variety+.

Breezeline TV packages

Breezeline doesn’t offer standalone TV service, so if you want cable TV through the company, you have to get internet as well.

Breezeline’s TV packages vary in price. Monthly billing can vary depending on the type of internet plan you’re getting and any promotional offers available, so it’s best to contact Breezeline directly to get a quote.

Breezeline internet fees

Most internet providers have extra fees that come along with your monthly bill, but Breezeline goes light on the customer. Professional installation costs a flat rate of $50, but you can set up the Wi-Fi yourself for free if you qualify for self installation.

Breezeline also charges $14.99 per month to rent a gateway (a combination modem and router). You also have the option of choosing Breezeline’s WiFi Your Way mesh system. We think WiFi Your Way is the best way (no pun intended) since it costs the same as the regular gateway and gives you wider coverage in your home and also includes a handy app.

You can avoid these extra equipment charges, though, if you buy your own equipment. Getting your own router also gives you flexibility when it comes to setting up your own security features and parental controls. However, you can’t get a home phone plan through Breezeline if you don’t use its router.

Breezeline internet installation, equipment, and contracts

There are two installation options with Breezeline—professional or self-install.

Breezeline installation and equipment

Breezeline’s self-install option is the best one because it doesn’t cost extra. The provider mails you a kit with cables, equipment, and instructions and then you set everything up yourself. You also get a gateway (a combination modem/router) if you’re renting one.

The self-install kit takes three to five days to ship, and your order includes tracking information so you can keep track of when it will arrive.

Not all homes qualify for self-installation. If your house doesn’t already have the necessary wiring for a cable internet connection, you will need a technician to come by and set everything up. Professional installation costs $50, which is not too expensive by internet providers’ standards.

Breezeline internet contracts

You don’t have to sign an annual contract when you get a Breezeline internet plan. You can cancel any time without facing early termination fees. However, make sure to return your modem/router if you’re renting one, otherwise you will be charged for it.

Breezeline internet customer ratings

*Based on our annual customer satisfaction survey

Breezeline gets a dismal 1.07 out of 5 rating with the Better Business Bureau . Customers have voiced complaints about technical issues arising in the wake of Breezeline’s acquisition of the internet provider WideOpenWest (WOW!). Many customers have written into the Better Business Bureau in recent months with complaints about high prices and spotty connections, citing regular outages and inconsistent performance from customer service.

As for our own data, unfortunately the provider isn’t one of the providers featured in our annual customer satisfaction survey . But if you’re a Breezeline customer, we’re eager to hear what you think. See our customer reviews page below to make a comment and share your experiences.

How Breezeline compares to the competition

*According to our annual customer satisfaction survey .

† For 12-24 months. No term contract. Taxes and equipment not included. Includes $10/mo automatic payments and paperless billing discount.

‡ For 12 months when bundled. Limited time offer; subject to change; valid to qualified residential customers who have not subscribed to any services within the previous 30 days and who have no outstanding obligation to Charter.

§ Price per month with Auto Pay & without select 5G mobile plans. Fios plan prices include taxes & fees.

Breezeline doesn’t quite stack up against its major competitors. Cable providers Xfinity and Spectrum both have lower prices for roughly the same speeds, and neither hits the customer with drastic price hikes after six months like Breezeline does. Also, these providers’ TV packages give you more channels with straightforward pricing structures. However, Xfinity imposes data caps on its plans and has term contracts, while Breezeline doesn’t.

As for fiber providers, Verizon offers internet in some of the same areas as Breezeline—and, again, it gives you a better deal. Verizon’s baseline plan costs more initially than Breezeline’s, but ends up being around $15 cheaper once Breezeline’s regular price kicks in. Also, Verizon’s baseline plan is 100 Mbps faster and all of its Fios fiber plans come with über-speedy symmetrical uploads.

Is Breezeline internet right for you?

Breezeline is a decent internet provider, with fast speeds and some additional perks that sweeten the deal. You don’t have to worry about data caps or contracts, and you can get speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps.

The main drawback with Breezeline is that it’s quite expensive. Once the initial promotional prices expire, its plans end up costing way higher than average for relatively standard cable-internet speeds. We’re also not so keen on Breezeline’s premium TV packages, which rack up in price but come with a relatively small number of channels.

If there’s a more mainstream internet provider in your area, we recommend going with that. But Breezeline can get you what you need if you’re looking for a straightforward cable-internet and TV package.

Is Breezeline Wi-Fi good?

Yes, Breezeline Wi-Fi is good. It gives you fast speeds with no data caps. However, it’s more expensive than other major internet providers, so it might not be your best bet if you have other available plan options in your area.

Who owns Breezeline?

Breezeline is owned by Cogeco Communications, a Canadian telecommunications company. Breezeline is based out of Quincy, Massachusetts, and serves 12 states including New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Ohio.

Did WOW! change to Breezeline?

Yes, WOW! changed to Breezeline in April 2022 as part of Breezeline’s purchase of WOW!’s Ohio operations. Customers who used to have internet plans through WOW! are now Breezeline customers and all of their billing goes through Breezeline.

Upload speeds: Up to 10–50 Mbps

Data cap: Unlimited

Is Breezeline good?

Breezeline internet plans come with great introductory prices and fast upload speeds. But the internet service provider’s (ISP) second-year price hikes are gigantic, and its bundles are similarly expensive thanks to its high TV plan prices. Still, Breezeline’s contract-free plans provide some flexibility ahead of that scheduled price increase.

Breezeline pros and cons

  • Great upload speeds
  • Low first-year internet pricing
  • Expensive bundle options
  • Big second-year price jumps
  • Plans and prices
  • Availability

Curious what other internet providers are in your area?

Breezeline plans and prices.

*For the first 12 months.

Data effective as of publish date. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Basic is surprisingly great for a starter internet plan, as ISPs rarely offer plans with prices below $20 per month—we rarely see internet plans at Basic’s price point that aren’t subsidized. 100 Mbps download speeds are nothing to write home about, but it’ll be more than enough for your household’s basic YouTube and Facebook needs.

Breezeline’s upload speeds, which range from 10 Mbps to 50 Mbps, are also generous for a cable ISP. With Breezeline’s upload speeds, your household can handle multiple video calls and cloud file backups without missing a beat. For comparison, Xfinity’s upload speeds on its cable internet plans start at a piddly 5 Mbps and top out at 35 Mbps.

None of Breezeline’s plans have contracts or data caps either, so you won’t have to deal with any early termination or overage fees. You can also tack on a combo modem/router for $14.99 per month, which isn’t a great rate—most ISPs charge around $10 for equipment rentals. Typically, we recommend buying your own instead .

Compare Breezeline internet prices

Prices for the first 12 months. Data effective as of publish date. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Breezeline’s first-year prices are also competitive versus the competition. You’ll be paying less during your first year of internet service compared to major providers like Xfinity and Spectrum.

The UltraFast plan provides more bang for your buck if you’re regularly downloading games or large applications. Depending on your region, Breezeline may offer Fast and UltraFast for the same price. This price match isn’t simply Breezeline doing you a favor—UltraFast has a larger second-year price hike—but we’ll never say no to a good internet deal.

But one of Breezeline’s biggest issues is its standard internet plan prices. Second-year price hikes are well-trod territory for internet plans, but even by ISP standards, Breezeline’s regular pricing is a doozy.

Most ISPs tack on an extra $10 or $20 price increase after your first year of service, but Breezeline doubles that across the board. You can potentially lower this price increase if you’re willing to haggle , but major ISPs like Verizon and AT&T have adopted flat-rate pricing for a reason: no one likes giant second-year price increases.

Breezeline internet and TV bundles

*Prices for the first 12 months.

Breezeline’s TV options include three channel packs: Locals+ ($29.98/mo.) contains only local channels like CBS, Variety+ ($64.99/mo.) offers basic cable channels like ESPN, and Family+ ($9.99/mo.) has even more family-tailored channels.

But if you want a Breezeline TV and internet bundle, expect to pay flat-out expensive prices. To get TV service with your internet (Breezeline doesn’t offer standalone TV service), Breezeline requires you to stack the preceding channel packs onto your plan.

So if you want Family+, you’ll also have to pay for the Variety+ and Locals+ channel packs. This adds up to an additional $104.96 per month. For Variety+, you’ll also have to pay for Locals+, and your TV service alone will cost $94.97 monthly.

Even if you get a mid-range bundle like UltraFast and Variety+, you’ll still be paying well over $100.00 monthly. Bundles from competing ISPs typically break the $100 threshold only when they throw in premium channels like HBO.

Breezeline’s voice service is similarly expensive for a bundle option. The service costs $19.99 per month, and it requires a Breezeline modem that costs an additional $14.99 monthly to rent. Yeesh.

All in all, Breezeline’s expensive TV plans and voice service make bundling harder than it needs to be for most shoppers. We’d suggest sticking with Breezeline’s internet plans, but a Breezeline internet and TV bundle could be a fit if you’re getting service for older family members who’ll struggle with newer streaming services.

Interested in a streaming and Breezeline internet bundle?

You can bundle Max (formerly HBO Max) with your Breezeline internet plan during the checkout process (and thereby avoid Breezeline’s confusing TV plans).

Breezeline availability

Breezeline is primarily available in cities across the Eastern Seaboard.

  • New Hampshire
  • Connecticut
  • Pennsylvania
  • West Virginia
  • South Carolina

Breezeline’s great first-year prices are undercut by some spectacularly high bundle and second-year prices. But the Basic internet plan offers great value for a starter internet package, and Breezeline’s no-contract policy gives you valuable flexibility.

Our advice is to take advantage of Breezeline’s low priced and fast internet plans and avoid the TV plans. But make sure you have a gameplan for when your internet package’s first-year promotional price ends.

Explore Breezeline services

Breezeline brings high-speed cable internet, as well as TV and home phone services, to small towns and rural areas primarily in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions, but also in parts of Aiken, SC , and  Miami, FL . Breezeline is available in a total of 12 states, making it one of the largest cable providers in the U.S.

Breezeline uses a cable network for all internet and TV services. A 100% cable network gives Breezeline a speed edge over most DSL and satellite internet services. However, cable internet may be more susceptible to slower speeds during peak usage times than fiber-optic internet services. Speeds range between 100 and 1,000 Mbps within four plans.

Breezeline lets you combine their internet, TV and home phone services into one bundle package. Bundling Breezeline services may present you with more TV package options than you’d get by choosing standalone TV, but it may also limit the number of available internet speeds.

Breezeline TV packages include your local channels, plus many popular news, sports, entertainment and family networks. Some Breezeline TV packages may also include premium networks, especially if you bundle with internet.

Breezeline FAQs

Nearly two million people across 12 states are eligible for Breezeline internet, TV and phone services. Primary service areas include rural regions in the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Breezeline is also available in Aiken, SC, and areas of Miami, FL.

No. Breezeline requires you to lease their equipment for internet service.

Atlantic Broadband Review

Steve M on December 13, 2019

Bad service all the way around. Slow customer service responses via chat, phone, and/or email. Their pricing is WAY out of whack with national averages. They have a monopoly and their behavior and pricing reflect that. Will leave them as soon as an alternative is available.

Atlantic Broadband: the good and the bad.

Doug Mcquilkin on August 28, 2018

They recently purchased Metrocast Cablevision so I inherited them. The good: very fast at 100+ Mbps, reasonable cost, few interruptions due to weather and technologically advanced. The bad: worst customer service imaginable, hour-long waits to reach a person and people are poorly trained.

Not horrible

Austin on March 20, 2017

Only paying $24 for internet that is lumped into apartment rent. But speeds are not too great. Tested on average at 16Mbps download and 1.5mbps upload. And there are times once in a while, maybe once a month, where it will slow down to a crawl (maybe on a Wednesday night when everyone's online). This is in the Aiken area. Overall not horrible but I think we can do better.

About Our Breezeline Speed Test Tool

Whether Breezeline is your internet provider or you use a different provider, the speed test below can show key statistics about your internet connection.

This speed test will check the performance of your broadband service whether you use Breezeline or another provider. These modules are designed to display results for download and upload performance. Download and upload throughput are the primary indicators of broadband internet quality. As of January 2022, Breezeline’s national average download rate is 195.72 Mbps. Across their coverage area, the average latency on Breezeline Internet speed tests is -1ms. For context, terrestrial connections generally output latency results in the 5–70ms range. Satellite Internet connections, in contrast, are often closer to 500–800ms.

Atlantic Broadband Rebrands as Breezeline

The company also announced plans to launch Breezeline Stream TV, a cloud-based, web-powered video experience allowing customers to access live and recorded programs on connected devices in and outside the home in 2022

Breezeline

QUINCY, Mass. —Following Atlantic Broadband’s acquisition of two cable systems in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio , the cable operator has decided to rebrand itself as “Breezeline.”

The new name will more accurately reflect its expanded geographical reach, which now covers 1.6 million homes and businesses, as well as its new service offerings and its commitment to customer care, the cable operator said.

“We’re no longer just an east coast provider, and we’ve long offered much more than broadband, so our company identity must evolve with us,” said Frank van der Post, president of Breezeline. “The name Breezeline marks the beginning of a new, exciting era of transforming our company through new growth, while also elevating the customer experience through enhanced customer care options, innovative products, and investment in the latest technologies.”

In addition to recent growth through acquisitions, the company has launched a major fiber expansion initiative that will extend connectivity to more than 70,000 additional homes and businesses in New Hampshire and West Virginia via ultra-fast Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) technology.

The company also announced plans to launch Breezeline Stream TV, a cloud-based, web-powered video experience allowing customers to access live and recorded programs on every compatible device in and outside the home. Breezeline Stream TV will be launched in select Breezeline markets early this year, with additional markets being added throughout 2022.

“The Breezeline name was chosen to convey our commitment to providing easy access to connected experiences for our customers,” said Julie Sullivan, vice president of marketing for Breezeline. “The Breezeline logo, a five-point pinwheel, represents our customers and the communities we serve, the innovation and services that enrich customers’ lives, and the elevated experiences we strive to provide in a seamlessly connected world. The pinwheel also implies motion – symbolic of both high-speed connectivity and the ease with which customers can interact with our company and services.”

The new Breezeline name and logo were introduced to customers on January 10 with a redesigned website, rebranded social media platforms, email announcements and more. The company’s Columbus and Cleveland operations, which are currently operating under the WOW! brand name, will transition to Breezeline by summer 2022.

Breezeline, the cable operator formerly known as Atlantic Broadband, to offer new service

After changing its name earlier this month, Breezeline — formerly Atlantic Broadband — announced Monday the debut of its next-generation TV service: Breezeline Stream TV.

The new service uses Internet Protocol TV, or IPTV, technology with a home’s Wi-Fi network to deliver hundreds of video channels, thousands of on-demand programs, and access to streaming providers, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max and others. The service will provide live and recorded programs on compatible devices inside and outside the home, and will be available in New Hampshire this month, with phased launches throughout the year in other service areas.

In southeastern Connecticut, Breezeline, the nation’s eighth-largest cable operator, serves parts of East Lyme, Montville, New London and Waterford.

Breezeline announced Jan. 10 that it was changing its name from Atlantic Broadband. The rebranding followed a major expansion, including the company's acquisition in September 2021 of two cable systems in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, pushing the company’s customer base to more than 1.6 million.

“We’re no longer just an East Coast provider, and we’ve long offered much more than broadband, so our company identity must evolve with us,” Frank van der Post, president of Breezeline, said in a statement. “The name Breezeline marks the beginning of a new, exciting era of transforming our company through new growth, while also elevating the customer experience through enhanced customer care options, innovative products, and investment in the latest technologies.”

Comcast Business Boosts Internet Speeds for Customers Nationwide

PHILADELPHIA, PA – MAY 7, 2024 – Comcast Business today increased Internet speeds for customers, nationwide, at no additional cost. Comcast Business announced the introduction of its fastest Internet plans yet – Ultimate Speed for Business – with up to triple the speeds. Additionally, Comcast Business announced the roll-out of next-generation multi-gigabit symmetrical business Internet speeds, powered by Full Duplex technology, in select markets.

Ultimate Speed for Ultimate Business Effective immediately, new, and existing Comcast Business customers can take advantage of the following speed plan increases:

  • Essential: 50 Mbps to 150 Mbps
  • Standard: 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps
  • Performance: 250 Mbps to 500 Mbps
  • Advanced: 500 Mbps to 800 Mbps
  • Upstream speeds have also been increased for the above, as well as for Comcast Business’s Gigabit Extra and 2 Gigabit plans

Comcast Business delivers the highest Internet speeds in more places for small businesses at affordable prices, backed with 24/7 support. Comcast Business also offers this service with unlimited data and the option to lease an all-in-one gateway enabling private business WiFi capable of delivering Gig speeds, a dynamic IP address, and Xfinity hotspot service. Customers can easily customize their plans with additional solutions such as advanced cybersecurity to better protect their connected devices and 4G LTE backup to help keep their business running when the unexpected strikes.

“For today’s businesses, a network that can’t keep up can mean missed opportunities and revenue. Comcast Business is committed to being the leading connectivity solutions provider for all businesses and is continually investing in and upgrading our network – making it faster, safer, smarter, and more reliable,” said Christian Nascimento, Vice President, Connectivity and Digital Experience, Comcast Business. “That’s why we’re introducing Ultimate Speed for Business – our fastest plans yet. We’re proud to increase download and upload speeds and offer our customers greater connectivity, value, and peace of mind.”

Next-Gen, Multi-Gig, Symmetrical Speeds As part of its continued network evolution, Comcast Business is also introducing a new portfolio of multi-gigabit, symmetrical Internet products for customers powered by DOCSIS 4.0. Comcast leverages a breakthrough network technology known as “Full Duplex” which utilizes the same network spectrum to dramatically increase upstream speeds without sacrificing downstream speeds.

Comcast Business has begun deployment of next-generation symmetrical Internet, powered by Full Duplex technology, to businesses in select areas of Atlanta, GA; Colorado Springs, CO; and Philadelphia, PA, and will continue to launch new markets throughout the country over the next few years.

Comcast Network Innovation Today’s speed increases are made possible by Comcast’s fiber-based network which has been built to deliver an exceptional Internet experience, ubiquitously, to the more than 60 million homes and businesses across the country. It is a culmination of years of research, technological breakthroughs, and massive investments, more than $20 billion since 2018 alone, in development and infrastructure.

The business services launch of DOCSIS 4.0 is the latest in a long line of world firsts that Comcast has spearheaded in the effort to implement DOCSIS 4.0. In April 2021, Comcast conducted the first-ever live test of Full Duplex DOCSIS and later that year tested the world’s first 10G connection all the way from the network to a modem. In 2022, Comcast conducted a world-first live trial and connected a business location in the Philadelphia region to its live network including a DOCSIS 4.0-enabled 10G node and multiple cable modems. In February 2023, the company marked another major milestone in the nation’s largest and fastest multi-gig deployment by announcing its latest Xfinity 10G upgrade launched to 10 million homes and businesses. And in December 2023, Comcast introduced the first residential customers in the world to next-generation Internet powered by DOCSIS 4.0 technology.

May 16, 2024 — Comcast Business announced plans to increase the speed of their internet services, touting new speed tiers and symmetrical speeds in some markets, according to a press release .

The provider says the enhanced service will allow for speeds operating three times faster than the current national averages.

All plans now have faster speeds: Basic plans now have 150 Megabits per second (Mbps) instead of 50 Mbps download, while Advanced plans now have 800 Mbps instead of 500 Mbps download.

Comcast Business said it is also implementing next-generation, symmetrical multi-gigabit speeds using Full Duplex DOCSIS 4.0 technology in markets including Atlanta, Colorado Springs, and Philadelphia.

The technology will allow for symmetrical speeds, or equal upload and download speeds.

Comcast Business is offering these updated services with unlimited data and the option to lease an all-in-one gateway enabling private business Wi-Fi capable of delivering Gig speeds, a dynamic IP address, and Xfinity hotspot service.

Additionally, customers can customize their plans with additional solutions such as advanced cybersecurity to better protect their connected devices and 4G LTE backup.

“For today’s businesses, a network that can’t keep up can mean missed opportunities and revenue. Putin could now defeat Ukraine within months

This is no longer a threat that the West can ignore. We must act now to prevent the outbreak of another world war

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon

The Prime Minister, in his “state of the nation” speech this week, accurately stated that the world is a very dangerous place, and we must ensure that our defence capabilities are up to the task. He is right on the threat but has yet to grasp that one way to meet it is by investing heavily in our physical and psychological military conventional deterrence.

The signs coming out of Moscow are far from encouraging, with Putin sacking his combat generals to replace them with “bean counters”. Presumably to ensure the economy is on a total war footing and capable of taking on Nato and outlasting it on the battlefields and in the parliaments of Europe. If Trump comes to power, he may only need to hold tight until January 2025; not long.

At the same moment, Russia appears to be making significant gains towards the second city Kharkiv, possibly catching the defenders on the hop and no doubt trying to unbalance the Ukraine army before the US heavy weaponry and the F16s arrive in numbers. The Ukraine Security Service believes that Russian forces are also massing in the northeast for another strike into Ukraine. In the worst case scenario, Russia could make significant gains this summer and terminally unsettle Ukraine’s defence. The fact that Volodymyr Zelensky has just cancelled visits to Spain and Portugal underwrites the seriousness of the current situation for those Western leaders not paying attention.

The US and Nato’s indecision and procrastination have helped strengthen Putin and given him the confidence to go on the offensive. Putin appears undeterred by Western leadership, believing many of our politicians are not up to the fight. Yet few who study this conflict believe Putin will stop at Ukraine: in order to prevent a major escalation between Russia and Nato, therefore, Ukraine must prevail. That will only happen with Nato’s indirect and direct support now.

Nato must plan for the worst-case scenario, where Russia breaks the “line” and charges West at speed and must be blocked.  Much better to block in Ukraine than on Nato soil, but this may require Nato “boots in the air and on the ground”, or as a minimum the genuine threat of such action. Too many Western leaders have ruled this out, which has only emboldened Putin; here, President Macon is right. They must now rule it “in” to change Putin’s thinking and approach. We must also plan to knock down Russian missiles and drones attacking Ukrainian cities as we did those Iranian ones attacking Israeli cities.

Putin has done nothing to conceal his objectives. Yet, as he turns tractor factories into tank production lines, the West is more concerned about climate change, wokism and elections. None of which will prevent another world war. We are grudgingly, eventually, planning to spend 2.5 per cent of GDP on defence – yet and Russia is spending north of 6 per cent.  This war has shown us yet again that mass really matters, and this we do not have, but Russia does in spades.

Most people in the UK, and probably the rest of Europe, do not believe war with Russia is a realistic possibility; our forebears thought the same in 1939. Had we not given up our defensive deterrence after World War I, Hitler would not have been so emboldened to attack, but we are gifting Putin the same advantage.

If politicians get this wrong now, their elections later in the year may be meaningless, as we all head to the recruitment centres rather than the polling stations. If they get this wrong, everything else vexing us today could become horrifically irrelevant tomorrow.
