How to Abbreviate a Master’s Degree

If you’re thinking about going to graduate school, you might be considering getting your master’s. But what is a master’s degree? In the hierarchy of higher education, a master’s degree is the next step after finishing your undergraduate studies.

You can earn a master’s degree in many subjects, but sometimes, depending on the subject, the master’s degree abbreviation may be different. For example, the most common master’s abbreviation for education is M.Ed., which is a shortened form Master of Education. A Master of Science would be abbreviated to M.Sc. Other Master’s degrees that could be shortened include Master of Fine Arts, Master of Social Sciences, Master of Accountancy, Master of Humanities, Master of Arts, Master of Music, Master of Computer Science, etc.

Studying for your master’s degree takes a lot of work. It’s no surprise then that the people want to show it off. So you need to know the correct ‌ shortened form ‌ of your degree, so you can put your master’s abbreviation after the name on your resume if you want to.

Bachelor’s degrees, like a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), Bachelor of Music or a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) can also be abbreviated in the same system as a Master’s. While Bachelor’s are for undergraduate degrees, Masters are for graduate degrees. Doctoral degrees, like a Doctor of Education, Doctor of Medicine, or a Doctor of Philosophy, also differ from Master degrees (normally seen as DDS), but they also get similar academic degree abbreviations. Many style guides are available for abbreviation help. Many styles include periods, spaces and apostrophes for a range of degrees like arts degrees, dentistry, etc.

What Is a Master’s Degree?

After your undergraduate studies, a master’s degree is ‌ the lowest form of graduate study ‌. For most master’s programs, you have to already hold a bachelor’s degree in order to apply. However, there are some combined programs that allow you to continue on to a master’s program immediately after you complete your undergraduate studies with the same school, without having to do more applications.

In some fields, like the sciences, earning a master’s degree directly after completing undergraduate studies is the norm, and many people with master’s degrees in the sciences go on to enter Ph.D. programs. In other fields, like library science, it may be difficult to get a job without a master’s degree. And if you want to teach at the university level in almost any subject, you will probably need a Ph.D.

A master’s degree is the next step on the road to a Ph.D. in many subjects. But some people complete a master’s degree and never go on to do more schooling, usually because the Ph.D. is not required to find work in their field. In other areas, like in business or education, a master’s degree is a career booster, but it isn’t required to find work.

What Is the Standard Master’s Degree Abbreviation?

There isn’t just one type of master’s degree, so there isn’t one single abbreviation that you can use for everything. The most common master’s degree, however, is the ‌ Master of Arts ‌, and so the most common master’s degree abbreviation is ‌ M.A ‌. Another common master’s degree is a Master of Business Administration, which is abbreviated as MBA.

Be careful writing it that way though, because it’s easy to make it grammatically incorrect. For example, you might not know whether to use “a” or “an” before M.A. Do you know which one it is?

If you chose “a,” you’re incorrect. That’s because when you’re choosing between “a” or “an,” you have to go with the way a word or abbreviation is pronounced, not how it’s spelled. M.A. is pronounced “Em-Ay,” so you should use “an” with it, not “a.”

Which Subjects Can You Study for a Master’s Degree?

You can get a master’s degree in ‌ almost any subject ‌, from art and history, to nursing, the hard sciences and many other options. When you’re choosing a master’s degree, think about what you want to do with your life. Most master’s degrees will prepare you for a career with specialized courses, internships and hands-on experience.

You can get a Master of Science in Nursing and become a nurse manager who is in charge of the other nurses. Earning a Master of Public Health would give you the skills to work at a government health organization, help create public policy or be on staff at a hospital or other medical facility to aid in patient and public education. With a Mater of Social Work, you could become a social worker and help needy kids, families and individuals.

You can earn a Master of Library Science and run libraries and archives for private companies or for the public good. A Master of Public Administration would give you the background in public policy that you would need to work in government or for a nonprofit. There are also master’s degrees in law, education, music, engineering, business, architecture and any other ‌ subject that suits your interest ‌. There are also schools that allow you to create interdisciplinary degrees, so you will always be able to study what you want.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Master’s Degree?

How long it takes to earn a master’s degree varies widely depending on your subject, course of study and the program itself. Most master’s degrees take ‌ about one to three years ‌ to complete. But the degree will take longer to earn if it includes a research or thesis requirement.

Degrees that are meant to teach new subjects will take longer than programs that are designed to add to students’ existing knowledge. Additionally, some courses of study are much more rigorous than others and require more courses to lead to a particular certification.

A Master of Arts in Teaching, for example, usually only takes a year or year and a half, because they are designed to help new teachers complete the requirements to become officially certified to teach the subject of their undergraduate major in their state. A Master of Fine Arts or a Master of Science might take longer, because both usually require research, an extended project or a thesis in order to graduate.

What Do You Call Someone with a Master’s Degree?

Even though getting a master’s degree is a big achievement, it isn’t like earning a doctorate. For the most part, people will still talk to you the same way they do now. In other words, no one is going to call you “master” unless they’re joking.

When you’re referring to someone with a master’s degree, use the level of formality that is suitable for the occasion. If the person with a master’s degree is your professor at a university, you can call them “‌ Professor ‌,” followed by their last name. You can also use ‌ their preferred prefix ‌, such as Mr., Mrs., Ms. or Mx. and their last name.

Personal preference is important when you’re deciding how to refer to someone. The same is true regarding how you want people to refer to you. Even if you have a Ph.D., you can still ask people to call you by your first name.

Should You Include Your Master’s Abbreviation After Your Name?

Writing your master’s abbreviation after your name on a resume is a simple method you can use to highlight your educational experience, but be careful you ‌ don’t go overboard ‌. Overusing your master’s abbreviation, especially if it’s in a field where having a master’s degree is considered the norm, may make you look inexperienced. It can come off as bragging about something that you shouldn’t be bragging about.

You can also include the abbreviation for your master’s degree in your email footer. This may be a good tactic if you want to come off as experienced in a field where fewer people have master’s degrees. However, most of the time it is best to leave your accolades and educational experience in the designated section of your resume or on your business card.

When in doubt, look for examples from people who are farther along in your field. Copy what they do in regards to listing their master’s abbreviation after their name, and you won’t go wrong. You can also ask ‌ more experienced people ‌ what they think about your degree placement. You might be making mistakes you wouldn’t see otherwise.

What Is the Master’s Abbreviation for Education?

Because there is more than one education master’s degree, there is more than one master’s abbreviation for education. Masters programs in education prepare students to become teachers, curriculum specialists, counselors and administrators. Since there are so many career paths within education, there are many degrees that students can choose from to pave the way toward their future.

The most common degree in education is a ‌ Master of Education ‌, and the abbreviation for that degree is ‌ M.Ed ‌. Another common type of degree is the standard Master of Arts (M.A.), which could include many of the same classes as a Master of Education. The differences will depend on the school. Other degrees in education include a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.), a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), a Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.) and various other less common degrees like an M.I.T.

Usually, the pages on your school’s website will have examples of the degree’s abbreviation. If you don’t know how to abbreviate your specific degree, refer to your school’s website. You can also ask your academic advisor for more information.

Other General Education Degree Abbreviations

Other than the common Master of Arts (M.A.), there are several other kinds of master’s degrees that are available in multiple subjects. The second most common is a Master of Science, which schools award in science-related disciplines like biology, engineering, statistics and health. A ‌ Master of Science ‌ is generally abbreviated as ‌ M.S. ‌ or ‌ M.Sc ‌.

A less common degree is a ‌ Master of Research ‌, which is abbreviated as ‌ M.Res ‌. Earning a Master of Research will prepare you to become a researcher in a variety of disciplines. The degree is research-oriented (of course) and ideal for students who wish to pursue further higher education in their field of study.

In Europe, other master’s degrees are more common. An ‌ M.Phil. ‌ is a ‌ Master by Research ‌ and is designed for students who want to take time to dig deeper into their field of study. Similarly, a ‌ Master of Studies ‌ (‌ M.St. ‌) is only awarded at certain universities in the UK, such as Oxford and Cambridge. An M.St. is those universities’ version of an M.A. or M.S., and so students in those degree programs will have to fulfill similar requirements as students in M.A. programs in the United States.

Specialized Master’s Degree Abbreviations

Many disciplines offer specialized master's degrees that have titles which correspond to their subject. So instead of a Master of Science in Engineering, you might earn a Master of Engineering while the rest of the degree, like the classes, tests and certifications, is absolutely the same. The master's engineering abbreviation would be M.Eng. Titles of degrees often vary by school, but what you learn to earn that degree usually doesn't change.

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA)
  • Master of Library Science (M.L.S., M.S.L.S. or M.L.I.S.)
  • Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.)
  • Master of Public Health (M.P.H.)
  • Master of Social Work (M.S.W.)
  • Master of Laws (L.L.M.)
  • Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (M.A.L.S., M.L.A. or A.L.M.)
  • Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)
  • Master of Music (M.M. or M.Mus.)
  • Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)
  • Master of Architecture (M.Arch.)

Properly Write Your Degree

The correct way to communicate your degree to employers and others is by using the following formats:

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Double Majors - You will not be receiving two bachelor's degrees if you double major. Your primary major determines the degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). If you're not fully sure which of your majors is primary, check CheckMarq or call the registrar's office.

Example: Primary Major: Psychology ; Secondary Major: Marketing
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Marketing

Primary Major: Marketing ; Secondary Major: Psychology

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing & Psychology

In a letter, you may shorten your degree by writing it this way:

  • In May 20XX, I will graduate with my Bachelor's degree in International Affairs.
  • In December 20XX, I will graduate with my Master's degree in Counseling Education.

How should I style academic degrees?

Spell out or abbreviate academic degrees in your prose:

The requirements for the associate of arts degree have been updated on the department website. The speaker holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, a master’s degree in secondary education, and a doctorate in performance studies. All the applicants have MFAs in poetry or fiction.

In an entry for a work composed as part of a degree requirement, abbreviate the name of the degree:

Maragh, Shauna A. Glamour in Contemporary American Cinema . 2020. U of South Florida, Tampa, PhD dissertation. 

Academic degrees are abbreviated without periods after letters or spaces between letters (see MLA Handbook , appendix 1), and their abbreviations are made plural by the addition of the letter s (2.54).

Masters degrees are some of the most complex abbreviations and titles associated with these degrees can be confusing and overwhelming, especially for those who are new to the field of higher education.

Even though the general rules are:

To abbreviate a master’s degree, start with “M” for “Master,” then add key term initials, like “A” for “Arts” (MA) or “S” for “Science” (MS). In some cases, use multiple letters from a term or combine initials of multiple terms for clarity, e.g., MEng, MPA, or MSN.

Deciphering the various masters degrees can be an extensive task for a student or even parents who aid the child in selecting the courses.

My master’s degree is in chemistry and the abbreviation is MChem. The abbreviation helped me know what I was actually applying for, and I was able to contrast that and a typical Masters of Science (MSc).

Whether it’s an MSc, MA, or MPhil, understanding what each one means and what qualifications they bring can be an important factor in determining the right course for you or your child.

How do you abbreviate a “master’s degree” title?

The common abbreviation for master’s degree is “M.A.” or “M.S.”. Both abbreviations refer to a type of graduate degree that requires an individual to have completed a bachelor’s degree program. “M.A.” stands for “Master of Arts” and is typically used for degrees related to humanities, social sciences or communication disciplines.

There are a few general rules and patterns for creating abbreviations for master’s degree programs:

  • Most abbreviations start with the letter “M,” which stands for “Master.”
  • The subsequent letters typically represent words or phrases within the full degree name. For example, “A” for “Arts,” “S” for “Science,” “B” for “Business,” and “F” for “Fine.”
  • In some cases, abbreviations use two or more letters from a single word to create a clearer distinction. For instance, “Eng” for “Engineering” (MEng) or “Stat” for “Statistics” (MStat).
  • When a degree name has multiple key terms, the abbreviation often includes the first letter of each term. For example, “Master of Public Administration” is abbreviated as “MPA” and “Master of Science in Nursing” as “MSN.”
  • In a few cases, the abbreviation uses a combination of the first letters of key terms and one or more additional letters from a term for better clarity. For instance, “Master of Science in Real Estate Development” is abbreviated as “MSRED.”

While these rules and patterns can be helpful in creating abbreviations for master’s degrees, it is essential to remember that not all abbreviations follow these exact guidelines. Always consult official sources or professional organizations to ensure the accuracy of abbreviations for specific degree programs.

Is the “M” in masters capitalised?

When referring to a master’s degree in a sentence, there is no need to capitalize the “m” in masters. This is because the word “master’s” is not a proper noun, but rather a common noun.

Proper nouns refer to specific names of people, places, or things, while common nouns refer to general categories or concepts.

Therefore, the word “master’s” falls into the latter category and should not be capitalized unless it appears at the beginning of a sentence.

However, when using the abbreviated form you should capitalize the “M” in master’s degree abbreviations.

Capitalizing the “M” in master’s degree abbreviations is necessary because abbreviations are typically written in uppercase letters to maintain consistency and clarity across academic and professional settings.

Uppercase letters in abbreviations help differentiate them from regular words and clearly signify that they represent a shortened form of a longer term or title.

Especially if you are using them at the end of your name in a professional setting.

Do you use a period when writing a degree abbreviation?

It is generally accepted to use a period when writing a degree abbreviation.

This convention ensures clarity and consistency in written communication, preventing any confusion or misinterpretation of the degree abbreviation.

For example, the abbreviation for Bachelor of Science is “B.S.” while the abbreviation for Doctor of Philosophy is “Ph.D.”

The use of a period after each letter of the abbreviation helps to distinguish it from a word or acronym.

There are some exceptions to this rule, particularly regarding more specialized degrees or professional certifications.

What Is a Master of Education Degree?

If you’re searching for higher level education degrees, you may have seen the initials M.Ed.  This is the Master of Education  abbreviation. But what does  M.Ed. stand for  in a broader sense?

An M.Ed. is a flexible graduate-level program in education which offers a choice of specialty, concentration, and program length. Some M.Ed. programs can be completed in 12 months. Master of Education programs can focus on curriculum development, leadership, technology, adult and career education, and many other specialties. In general, M.Ed. programs provide students with the opportunity to study educational theory and pedagogy. They also serve as a stage for pursuing additional post-baccalaureate studies in education, including doctoral programs.

Who Should Consider a M.ED. Degree

If you want to pursue a career in education that involves curriculum design or higher level school administration, a Master’s in Education degree represents an ideal starting point. For many states in the US, a master’s degree is also a prerequisite for more specialized areas of education. For example, 36 states require a master’s degree for speech-language pathology teachers, along with additional qualifications for licensing and certification. 

Having an M.Ed. may also enhance your appeal to school districts as a classroom teacher. The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) reports that 88 percent of large school districts offer more pay for teachers with master’s degrees, including the largest districts in all 50 states.

The curriculum in Master of Education varies between programs, schools, and specialties, but there are some common types of coursework that all candidates will be asked to complete. Most M.Ed. programs include courses in educational theory, legal considerations, diversity, equity and inclusiveness. They may often cover classroom management and best practices in education for the 21st century classroom. 

A M.Ed. focusing on instructional design and technology will include theories of classroom and online learning as well as courses in universal design and accessible online lessons for students with physical or learning disabilities. A Master of Education with an educational leadership focus, on the other hand, will include courses in human resources, leadership skills, and planning and evaluation.

One difference between M.Ed. programs and Master of Arts in Teaching (M.AT.) degrees is program flexibility and increased opportunity to study theories and educational research. M.AT. degrees are two-year graduate programs which usually include three semesters of coursework in teacher education with classroom observation and a final semester of observed student teaching.

While some educators receive general Master of Education degrees, most people specialize in a subject area, educational level, organizational leadership or specialized focus, like ESL or special education. If your goal is to be a senior teacher supervising student teachers, you could benefit from an M.Ed. program. So you’re putting the finishing touches on your CV or resume website , but you can’t remember how to write out the name of your graduate degree. Does it have an apostrophe? Should it all be capitalized?

Well, you actually have a few formatting options, but the most common and most correct way to spell it all out is “master’s degree”, including an apostrophe and not capitalized.

What is a master’s degree? And how to spell it right?

There is a simple reason for the apostrophe. A master’s degree (from Latin magister , “master” or “teacher”) is an advanced degree awarded by a university or other academic institution after one completes a curriculum and demonstrates expertise in a specific field or profession. This means a graduate possesses mastery in a subject.

Quick reminder: an apostrophe is a punctuation mark indicating (among other things) the possessive case of a noun. So, there you have it! If you have a master's degree, then you should make sure to include the apostrophe to show off your possession of all that knowledge—and that precious diploma.

Here are a few examples of how to use “master’s degree” in a sentence:

When you use it without mentioning the discipline, master’s degree should always be left lowercase.

If you’ve attained superhuman status and have more than one graduate degree, then you would pluralize like this: “They earned two master’s degrees over the years”.

Some other ways to name a master’s degree

The other way you can write out the name of a master’s degree is using its official title. In this case, you’ll want to be sure to capitalize it and drop the apostrophe. For example:

They were awarded a Master of Arts in English by the university.

They completed a Master of Science in Engineering three years ago.

The official name can also be abbreviated like this:

An M.A. in History or an M.S. in Mathematics.

An A.M. (from Latin, artium magister ) in History or an S.M. (from Latin, scientiae magister ) in Mathematics, if your university has a preference for Latin, like Harvard University, the University of Chicago or MIT.

Note that these abbreviations can work with or without periods, depending on the style guide your university follows and its country of origin. Here are some common abbreviations:

Academic degrees are capitalized only when the full name of the degree is used, such as Bachelor of Arts or Master of Social Work. General references, such as bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, are not capitalized. Do not capitalize graduate certificate.

Correct He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 2008. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication in 2008. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in communication in 2008. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008. She holds a doctoral degree (or doctorate) from Stanford University.

Abbreviations, such as B.A., M.S. and Ph.D., should be used in text only when there is a need to identify many people by academic degree and use of the full names would be cumbersome.

In most writing, use of the general terms bachelor’s or bachelor’s degree, master’s or master’s degree and doctorate or doctoral degree are sufficient to establish credentials and preferred to use of the full name of the degree (or the initials).

Use an apostrophe (possessive) with bachelor’s degree and master’s degree, but not in Bachelor of Arts or Master of Science. Do not use an apostrophe (possessive) with associate degree or doctoral degree.

Never use both a courtesy title and degree

Identifying alumni by class year versus degrees earned

To identify someone as an alumnus or alumna of WMU, use the person's preferred class year. Immediately following the name, enter one space, an apostrophe and the two-numeral preferred class year. Both graduate and non-graduate alumni (attended but did not earn a degree) have a preferred class year, and each alumnus and alumna has only one preferred class year, regardless of how many degrees are held.

Example Mary W. Smith ’79 was elected president of the chapter.

To identify degrees earned at WMU, place a comma immediately after the name, and follow it with a space, the degree, an apostrophe, the two-numeral year the degree was awarded, and a comma (or period at the end of a sentence).

Examples Mary W. Smith, B.A.’79, was elected president. Thomas C. Clark, B.A.’65, M.A.’67, Ph.D.’79, attended the reunion.

If your intention is to show degrees earned at WMU, then list both the degrees and the years in which they were earned. If your intention is simply to indicate that the person is an alumnus or alumna, use only the preferred class year.

Correct Thomas C. Clark ’65 attended the reunion. Thomas C. Clark, B.A.’65, M.A.’67, Ph.D.’79, attended the reunion. Incorrect Thomas C. Clark ’65 ’67 ’79 attended the reunion.

Degrees earned at other institutions

Except to show multiple degrees earned at Western Michigan University, do not list more than one degree following a person's name. The following examples are a first reference to a speaker who earned her degrees at another university .

Incorrect : Rebecca McKenzie, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., will... Acceptable : Rebecca McKenzie, Ph.D., will... Preferred : Dr. Rebecca McKenzie will...

Do not mix degrees earned at WMU with degrees earned at other institutions. If Mary Smith earned a B.A. in 1995 from WMU and a Ph.D. in 2008 from the University of Illinois, list her as "Mary Smith, B.A.’95," or as "Mary Smith, Ph.D." Never include the two-numeral class year construction with degrees earned from other institutions.

Are degrees capitalized?

In general, major style guides agree that the names of specific degrees should be capitalized and the words referring to types of general degrees shouldn’t be capitalized. For example:

  • My mother has a master’s degree .
  • Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science degree . (A Bachelor of Science is a specific degree, whereas a bachelor’s degree is the more general name or category.)
  • Professor Andrews has two doctorates: a Doctor of Fine Arts degree and a Doctor of Music degree . (Similarly, a Doctor of Fine Arts is a specific degree within the general category of doctoral degrees .)

Of course, many universities have their own rules and style guides about how they refer to the degrees that they offer. Because of this, a university may capitalize the names of their degrees differently than the style guide that you use.

Should we abbreviate names of degrees?

In general, the rules around abbreviating names of degrees will depend on the style guide you use. For example, The Associated Press’s style recommends not abbreviating degree names at all and only allows it in order to avoid long sentences that include multiple degrees and people. If you are using AP style, the following example would apply:

❌ Incorrect:  Dr. Smith, who has a Ph.D , taught the class. ✅ Correct:  Dr. Smith, who has a doctorate in philosophy , taught the class.

Other major style guides are typically less strict about using abbreviations. Generally, the important thing is to remain consistent if you decide to use abbreviations or not.

How are degrees punctuated?

If we are using abbreviations, the punctuation will depend on the style guide that you use. According to AP style, degrees that have two-letter abbreviations use periods while longer abbreviations do not. For example, Bachelor of Science would be abbreviated as B.S. while Bachelor of Fine Arts would be abbreviated as  BFA . If you’re using The Chicago Manual of Style , no periods are used in abbreviations of any degree unless it is required or part of tradition. Again, a particular university may also have their own preferences regarding how they punctuate their degree names.

In AP style, abbreviations must follow a person’s full name. For example:

❌ Incorrect: Dr. Nguyen , DDS ✅ Correct: Dr. Angela Nguyen , DDS

With all of that out of the way, let’s look specifically at how we typically refer to the different types of degrees. In the American university degree system, there are typically four major types of degrees. While the specific names of degrees are usually consistent, the abbreviations will often vary depending on the style guide or university.

Associate degree

An associate degree is an undergraduate degree typically earned in two to three years of study. The name associate’s degree is also commonly used to refer to this degree, but some style guides may consider that incorrect. When written out, the names of associate degrees typically begin with Associate of .

There are many different types of associate degrees. Some common examples include:

Program Specific Electives

For educators interested in pursuing certification, the University of New England offers a program to equip teachers with the foundational knowledge and curriculum required by the State of Maine.

Master of Science in Education — Special Education

Master of science in education — educational leadership.

For educators interested in pursuing certification as building administrators, the University of New England offers a program to equip teachers with the foundational knowledge and curriculum required by the State of Maine.

Master of Science in Education — Teaching Methodology

The Master of Science in Education — Teaching Methodology is available only to UNE students who have successfully completed the former Teacher Certification Program (TCP). The Teaching Methodology program is a thirty (30)-credit master’s degree encompassing fifteen (15) graduate credits from UNE’s former College of Arts and Sciences Teacher Certification Program and fifteen (15) core credits in the current College of Professional Studies (CPS) Graduate Programs in Education.

*Please note: these courses are no longer offered. Other courses from UNE’s former Teacher Certification Program that are 500-level or above may also be considered with review from the program director.

Academic Policy

Attendance policy.

Students taking online graduate courses through the College of Professional Studies will be administratively dropped for non-participation if a graded assignment/discussion post is not submitted before Sunday at 11:59 p.m. of the first week of the term. Reinstatement is at the purview of the Dean’s Office. 

Course Withdrawal Policy

Add/drop period.

A student may add or drop a course during the time frames published on the UNE Academic Calendar. Courses dropped during the add/drop period will not appear on a student’s official transcript.

Course Withdrawal Period

A student may withdraw from a course after the add/drop period has ended through the designated withdrawal deadline, which is approximately at the 60% point of the course's length. The withdrawal period for each semester and session is published on the UNE Academic Calendar.

Grade for the Course Withdrawal

A course withdrawal during the withdrawal period results in a grade of W, which will appear on a student’s official transcript. The grade of W is awarded only if a student has submitted a completed Course Withdrawal Form to the Registrar’s Office by the deadline. A W grade does not impact the term or cumulative GPA.

Consultation Before a Course Withdrawal

Before deciding to withdraw from a course, students must consult their Program/Academic Director and are encouraged to discuss the situation with the instructor. 

International students must obtain the approval of the Office of Global Education, as withdrawals may affect visa status.

Students are strongly urged to consult with Student Financial Services, as course withdrawals may affect financial aid or Veterans benefits. 

Course Withdrawal Process

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must submit a Course Withdrawal Form, signed by their Program/Academic Director and Office of Global Education (if applicable), to the Registrar’s Office before the Course Withdrawal deadline.

Ceasing to attend classes or notifying the instructor does not constitute an official withdrawal.

Late Withdrawal

Requests to withdraw from a course after the withdrawal period will only be considered in extreme circumstances. To request a late withdrawal, a student must consult with their Program/Academic Director and submit a completed Academic Petition stating the extenuating circumstances and a letter of support from an advisor, faculty member, or Program/Academic Director to the College’s Dean’s Office offering the course for consideration. 

If approved, a W grade will appear on the transcript, not impacting the GPA calculations.

Late withdrawal petitions must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by the last day of the class.

Note: All deadlines, procedures, and policies related to course withdrawal are subject to the guidelines specified on the UNE Academic Calendar.

Minimal Grade Point Average

Matriculated graduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) or better. Failure to do so will result in academic probation and possible termination from the program. Any student receiving a grade below B- on any individual course has failed that course and must re-enroll and repeat the course to achieve a grade of B- or better. Students receiving a grade of F in any course will be immediately placed on academic probation. Any student who receives a grade of F in two (2) courses is dismissed from the program.

Dismissal from the Program

Termination from the Program may occur when the Education Program Director becomes aware of one of the following:

  • Surrender of a teacher license in any jurisdiction for disciplinary reasons.
  • Documented academic dishonesty (Note this also includes course online postings and email communications with faculty and staff. Students are advised that their behavior while participating in the Program should exemplify the ethical behavior of a professional educator with respect to all communications.)

Graduation Requirements

To complete the program and receive a Master of Science in Education, a student must:

  • Complete all program requirements.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Pay all tuition and fees.

Leave of Absence (Academic Stop Out)

Students may stop out of their program for up to two (2) semesters. Students need to coordinate stop outs in advance with their assigned student support specialist, and stop out time is considered part of the time allotted to complete the academic program. Application for readmission is not necessary if the student returns as planned. However, the student who does not return at the specified time or who exceeds two (2) semesters of stop out will be administratively withdrawn and will be subject to readmission procedures. Readmitted students are subject to the re-admittance term’s catalog (this may mean that policies and/or program requirements have been changed or updated since previous admission, and should be reviewed for potential impact on degree requirements, time to complete the degree, and degree planning).

Re-admission

Students who have withdrawn from the program, either self-initiated or administrative withdrawal, must reapply to the program if they wish to continue their studies. The application procedures, academic policies, and program requirements that are in effect at the time of readmission will apply.

Students who re-enroll following withdrawal will have their previous coursework evaluated for applicability to the existing academic requirements. Coursework that is more than five (5) years old may not be accepted for credit in the program.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn to:

  • Apply leadership frameworks that focus on personal values, beliefs, ethics, and leadership styles.
  • Address the full range of motivation and differentiation issues encountered in today's educational systems.
  • Promote social justice using principles of diversity and inclusion.
  • Analyze and conduct research relevant to their teaching or administrative interests.
  • Document professional development in the program via an electronic portfolio of coursework.
  • Develop online collaborative relationships with peers. 

Transfer Credit

Upon acceptance, students may apply to transfer up to three (3) courses (maximum of nine (9) credits) into the Master of Science in Education program.

To request consideration for transfer credit, a student must provide an official transcript. Transfer credit is awarded at the discretion of The College of Professional Studies based on specific program details listed below. Requests for approval of transfer credit should be submitted to and will be granted at the discretion of the program director.

Transfer credit must be:

  • Classified as graduate level.
  • Taken at a regionally accredited institution.
  • Worth three (3) credits.
  • Taken within five (5) years of application.
  • Completed with a grade of B or better.
  • Equivalent to one (1) of the required program courses or an elective course that meets the goals of the student’s education.

Transfer credit cannot be accepted into any program leading to State of Maine certification.

Admission Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or above from a regionally accredited institution or its equivalent. See  International Admissions  for details regarding evaluation of international degrees for grade and degree equivalency.
  • Applications are reviewed holistically as a determination of academic readiness. The admissions committee values previous academic performance as indicated on transcripts and considers it as part of the review process.
  • Computer with an internet connection, including the hardware and software requirements described in our  Technical Requirements . Must also possess sufficient computer skills to navigate the internet as all classes are accessed 100% online.

  • Applications for admission are accepted through UNE’s online application only. Detailed instructions are included in the online application.
  • Official transcripts, as well as other documents to support the application, must be submitted to The College of Professional Studies, either electronically or sent to 716 Stevens Ave, Portland, ME, 04103.
  • International applicants and applicants with international degrees must have their transcripts evaluated for degree and grade equivalency to that of a regionally accredited U.S. institution. See  International Admissions .
  • All applicants to UNE must be able to understand and communicate in English to be admitted to the university. UNE accepts several methods to demonstrate English Proficiency, See  International Admissions.
  • If an applicant cannot prove English Proficiency in another way, scores from the  Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  are required and must be submitted as a part of the completed application. 
  • All materials submitted as part of the application become the property of UNE and will not be returned or released to anyone, including the applicant. This policy includes letters of reference, primary and secondary applications, personal statements, transcripts, and other supporting materials.

The M.Ed. in Special Education is for students seeking a Master’s degree who have completed undergraduate training in a teacher education field and who have a teaching certificate. This advanced program includes the study of research methods and findings that allow students to become informed consumers of research and skilled practitioners. What makes the M.Ed. experience unique is the formal research conducted as part of the applied project.

The minimum 33 hours of coursework includes required courses and applied research individualized to the student’s career objectives. This allows students to gain advanced knowledge and skills in various special education topic areas and across the lifespan.

Master’s students are required to complete an applied project rather than a typical thesis. These projects consist of extensive research and writing a proposal while enrolled in an independent study course the semester prior to the project’s anticipated start.

Once the proposal is approved by the student’s advisor, it is implemented the following semester. The project is completed in the field with real students and actual strategies gleaned from the research. Completed works are presented to a graduate committee and must be approved by a clear majority before the student is allowed to graduate.

In this emphasis, coursework also includes:

  • Characteristics of learning disabilities, including dyslexia
  • Methods for individualized assessment
  • Academic and behavior interventions
  • Writing and strategy instruction in the content areas

The University of Georgia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. Tuition & Fees

Tuition rates and student fees can change each year. 

Based on 2022 credit hour cost, a person completing this program at the recommended pace would have paid $13,761 in tuition for a Georgia Resident and $34,650 in tuition for an out-of-state student.

Online students pay the following fees: Connect UGA, Green, and Technology. The total for those  fees in the fall semester of 2023 was $147  for students enrolled in exclusively online courses.

Professional preparation: Earned, or will have earned, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution before the date of enrollment at the University of Georgia.

GPA: Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 for all courses taken.

The state requires that all candidates have a minimum 2.5 GPA on undergraduate or previous graduate work. Go to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission website for details.

  • Transcripts – Submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended as part of the online application. Send official transcripts after you are offered admission.
  • Letters of Recommendation  – Submit three letters of recommendation online to graduate school. Letters should be from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s scholarly ability and potential for success in a graduate program.

TOEFL: Foreign applicants will also need to score a minimum of 20 points each on the Speaking and Writing sections of the TOEFL with an overall minimum score of 80. Test scores must be within 5 years from the date of application.

Applicants to the Master of Science in Education, Adult Education must provide the following information for admission:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution

Master of Arts in Teaching, Secondary Education Certification (6-12) (Online)

About the program.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) leads to initial teaching certification in Secondary Education (6-12) and a master’s degree for those persons who hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. MAT Secondary Education offers the following concentrations: biology, broad fields science, chemistry, economics, English, history, geography, mathematics, physics, or political science. The program of study is designed to meet all content and methods requirements for initial certification and the degree in 39 credit hours. 

Applicants interested in the MAT Secondary Education program will have their transcripts evaluated as part of the application process to ensure content and GPA requirements are satisfied to begin the MAT program. Prerequisite content course work, based on the transcript evaluation, must be completed before admission into the program. 

This is a fully online program. Candidates are required to complete supervised field experiences in Georgia schools to meet certification requirements either as a full-time Teacher of Record anywhere in the state of Georgia or through an assigned placement as a teacher candidate within 70 miles of the Statesboro or Armstrong campus. Field experiences must be completed in a classroom that matches the program concentration.

NOTE: All new MAT Secondary Education candidates must attend a one-day virtual orientation. The mandatory orientation for new summer and fall admits to the MAT Middle Grades Education program is scheduled for  Saturday, August 24th, 2024.

  • Acknowledge ”Disclosure and Affirmation” statements that address the Code of Ethics for Educators and the need for tort liability insurance.
  • If an applicant was previously enrolled in an initial teacher preparation program, an interview must be completed with the Program Coordinator prior to admission to the program.

Georgia Pre-Service certificate: Prior to participating in a field experience in the MAT program (which occurs within the first semester), all candidates must have a Georgia Pre-Service Certificate or Provisional/Waiver Teaching Certificate in a field that matches the Program. After you receive your admission acceptance, if you are NOT employed as a teacher of record in a matching content area classroom in Georgia, you will receive an email from the College of Education with the documents required to receive the Pre-Service certificate from the GaPSC. Once you provide the information requested in the documents, it will be sent to the GaPSC by the College of Education Officer.

A master’s eases the transition to graduate work and may make you more competitive when applying to doctoral programs.

Although it's not usually a requirement, earning a master’s degree before applying to a Ph.D. or other doctoral program can be a good way to get accustomed to graduate-level coursework while gaining valuable research experience and connections in your field.

But it can also be an expensive and time-consuming detour on the route to a doctorate, so it’s important to consider whether the benefits of earning a master’s before a Ph.D. outweigh the cost.

Here are some factors experts say you should weigh.

Reasons to Get a Master’s Degree First

Karin Ash, a graduate consultant at Accepted, a college admissions consulting firm, says the research experience students can gain through a master’s tends to give them an edge in doctoral admissions.

Master's studies can also expand opportunities for students who already have significant research work behind them. Ash notes that some students she works with have research experience but choose to explore other research areas through a master's before deciding on a focus for their doctoral studies.

If your undergraduate major was fairly different from what you plan to study at a graduate level, getting a master’s degree first can help bridge the gap, says Julie Posselt, a professor of education and associate dean of the University of Southern California Graduate School. Posselt, who earned her master's before pursuing doctoral studies, says master’s studies can also help you decide whether what you’re studying is right for your academic interests and career goals .

“I learned through my master's program that the field that I had started to pursue was much more narrow than what I wanted for the long term,” Posselt says. “So instead of investing five years in a field, I was able to invest a shorter amount of time – two years – and then make the decision that if someday I wanted a Ph.D., it was going to need to be in a broader field than the one that I had during my master's.”

Ash and Posselt say a master’s can be a good way to network with experts in your field of interest and make connections that will be valuable in a future career.

“A lot of STEM students tell me they don’t have professors who know them as their classes are large,” Ash wrote in an email. “Obtaining a master’s degree will allow them to develop relationships with professors who can then write substantive recommendation letters .”

Reasons to Go Straight to a Doctoral Program

Master's degrees can be expensive , and students often don't receive significant funding to complete their studies.

“My concern is the increasing debt that American students have from their undergraduate education," Posselt says, "and the fact that most master's programs don't fund them, and as a result, students have to take out significant loans" to complete a master’s.

"I always encourage students, if they're going to get a master's degree, to try to find a place where they can get funding along the way,” she says.

On the other hand, Ash says it’s common for Ph.D. programs to be fully funded , so it may be unnecessarily costly to earn a master’s degree first – especially if it means taking out student loans .

In addition to considering the tuition cost, Posselt says it’s important to consider the earnings you could lose by delaying the start of your career by a year or two to pursue a master’s degree.

It's also worth investigating whether the doctoral program you're considering will accept some of the credits you earn in a master's program, as that could shorten your doctoral studies. But Posselt says the transferability of master's-level coursework is relatively weak and varies by institution.

Even if you do apply master's coursework to your Ph.D., it may not be worthwhile.

"Many Ph.D. programs will accept credits from courses taken at the master's level if the coursework is relevant to the program," Ash says. "However, often the applicant is veering to a more specialized education and will need to take the appropriate coursework to become proficient in that subject area. This could mean they end up with many more credits than needed to graduate."

If you’re still unsure whether you should pursue a master’s first, Posselt says it’s important to consider the leverage the degree could have when it comes to doctoral admissions. A master’s is more valuable in some fields than others, she notes, so consulting with advisers and mentors from your undergraduate studies is a good way to determine how useful it will be when pursuing doctoral work.

How to write an MBA resume and make sure it stands out in the stack

Applying to business school, or an MBA program, can be nerve-racking. You’ll need to lasso together transcripts and test scores, fill out an application, and likely ace an interview—but perhaps the most critical piece of it all is an MBA resume. This important document will list out many of the same elements as a traditional resume, such as your educational background and work experience. 

But an MBA resume also has a different primary function than the typical resume you might submit to try and land a job: It’s designed to land you a spot in an MBA program. If writing an MBA resume feels intimidating, knowing what to put on it, and some other framing tactics, may help calm your nerves.

As noted, an MBA resume should feel familiar to many prospective business school students. 

“An MBA resume is very similar to a job resume,” says Kaneisha Grayson, the founder and CEO of The Art of Applying , an MBA admissions consultancy. She adds that both types of resumes will, or should, comprise a single page, incorporate clear, professional formatting, and lay out an applicant’s educational and career accomplishments. 

“I’d say one difference between the two is that I advise our clients to put their education at the top—whereas with a job resume, you’d see education at the bottom,” Grayson says. She recommends this variation because an MBA resume’s specific aim of landing an applicant at an educational institution. 

So, in that sense, there may not be a whole lot of differences between an MBA resume and a job resume, but there will be some additional focus on specific aspects of your background, all in an effort to win over an MBA program’s selection or admissions committee. 

How to write an MBA resume

Again, writing an MBA resume shouldn’t differ a whole lot from writing a traditional resume, but you’ll want to try and keep your end goal in mind, which is landing a spot in an MBA program. As you write your MBA resume, keeping that goal in mind should prove helpful, because it can help you parse out the information you’ll want to include, and the things you won’t.

“An MBA resume is very specialized toward the application cycle,” says Ellin Lolis, President and Founder of Ellin Lolis MBA Consulting . So, again, keep the end goal in mind. “Your education section is going to be important,” Lolis says, “but we mostly want to see your career focus.”

As for the nuts and bolts of writing an MBA resume? Keep it simple by deciding what to rope in, what to leave out, and how to structure it all so that it’s easy to read. 

What to include in your MBA resume

The main elements that your MBA resume should include are an education section, a job experience or professional experience section, and a portion that details a bit more about you, personally, such as your hobbies and interests. 

You can leave out photographs, information related to your high school, and even most of your contact information—that’ll be included on your program application, the experts say. 

Again, do your best to keep what you include to one page. The only time you could probably get a pass for using more than one page is if you have extensive professional experience, and are applying to an executive MBA program. A good rule of thumb? “When you have more than seven years of full-time, post-college work experience,” says Grayson. 

How to structure an MBA resume

As for structuring an MBA resume, do your best to contain most elements to the aforementioned sections: Education, professional background and experience, and a section dedicated to your personal hobbies, interests, skills and certifications, and community service work.

List the schools you attended and the degrees you earned, perhaps with any relevant coursework and GPAs in the education section. Your professional section may differ depending on your specific experiences and industries you’ve worked in, but try to frame it as a sort of professional “story,” which can showcase how an MBA can help you take the next step.

Professional background

“Generally speaking, the MBA is not a purely academic degree, as a majority of people are going to earn one to get a better job,” says Lolis. “They’re doing it to boost their career—and at that point, the most relevant thing is your recent job and your professional track record,” she says.

Get into the weeds, too, about your accomplishments. “Don’t just reiterate your job responsibilities,” says Grayson. “Communicate the results of your efforts. Quantifying the results is much more significant and meaningful—describe the impact,” she says.

Hobbies, interests, and more

As for the more personal portion? “One of the main things that’s different from a job resume is that they want you to share some of your hobbies and interests,” Lolis says. “Be very specific,” adds Grayson, “because 90% of people will list ‘travel’ as a hobby. “But that’s not interesting—maybe something like ‘slow traveling to find the best street food.’ That’s interesting.” This, she says, can help spark a conversation, or help your resume stand out from the pile.

In addition to specific hobbies or interests, you might include, add volunteer or community work as well, and perhaps relevant technical or language skills. Again, this may help tip the scales in your favor by showing you have specific know-how related to a given industry or task. Any applicable awards you’ve earned may be good to include, too, as they showcase that you’re capable of excelling in a given area.

Should you customize your resume for each business school?

Experts generally don’t recommend changing up your MBA resume when applying to different schools. Instead, look for specific instructions relayed by the school, if there are any, and make any needed changes accordingly. So, unless you have a really compelling reason, you can probably use the same resume for a number of applications.

Also, don’t go overboard in terms of design to make your resume stand out. “Just stick to traditional formatting,” says Lolis, since that’s what most admissions teams are used to seeing, and are generally looking for. Let the contents of the resume speak for you—not the design.

Where to go if you need help  

For many prospective MBA students, piecing together a resume shouldn’t be terribly difficult, given that it’s mostly the same process as writing a traditional resume. However, if you need help, you can reach out to consultants, or even check out some of the resources schools make available to help you along the process. 

  • Consultants : There are many MBA consultancies out there, including the firms that Lolis and Grayson founded. They can help create, review, and critique an MBA resume and get it into shape. 
  • Examples and templates : Some schools even make templates available , and example resumes to help students create their own. 

The takeaway  

In all, you should write an MBA resume in the same way you’d write a traditional resume, with some slight variations. The resume should focus on your professional background and previous education, while also detailing some of your personal interests, too. Stick to classic resume formatting as well, and keep it to one page, if possible.

It’s also important, experts say, to use some basic formatting and style—use 11 or 12-point font, a normal font style (Arial, Times New Roman, etc.), and overall, keep it professional. And remember: don’t go overboard trying to score style points with the resume’s design or other elements.
