The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is an established national initiative, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and managed by the Council.

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is unique in the Irish research landscape and complements other channels for funded postgraduate education in the Irish ecosystem. Among its features are:

  • individual, prestigious awards for excellent research in the name of the applicant;
  • an objective selection process using international, independent expert peer review;
  • funding across all disciplines, from archaeology to zoology; and
  • awards for bottom-up, non-directed research, with the exception of those funded by our strategic funding partners.

Pioneering proposals addressing new and emerging fields of research or those introducing creative, innovative approaches are welcomed. Proposals of an interdisciplinary nature are also encouraged as it is recognised that advancing fundamental understanding is achieved by integrating information, techniques, tools and perspectives from two or more disciplines.

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is highly competitive, with an average success rate of 18% over the past five years. Successful awardees under the programme are recognised as demonstrating world-class potential as future research leaders.

The Graduate Studies Office administers a DCU Postgraduate Research Conference and Travel Grant . Each postgraduate research student, full-time or part-time, can apply in the period of his or her studentship for a Conference and Travel Grant from the DCU Research Committee. The scheme is administered through the Graduate Studies Office (GSO), based in GLA.LG13 in the McNulty Building, Glasnevin Campus. Further information is available at the Graduate Studies Office scholarships page .

The Faculty Research Committee allocates some funds to administer a competitive Journal Publication Scheme , a call for which is issued normally at the end of October or beginning of November.  The scheme is available to research students in their 3rd or later year in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, DCU.  The scheme provides support for research leading to publication in a SCOPUS-ranked journal. The article can be sole-authored by the student or co-authored with a member of DCU staff, most typically but not exclusively a student’s supervisor.  Items supported could include fieldwork; archive / research travel; conference dissemination; data generation.  Depending on the budget allocation and number of applicants the maximum value of any single award can change but generally it will be no more than €1,000.

For a list of the nearly 10,000 Scopus-ranked journals in arts, humanities and social sciences and their ranking in each discipline, see this open access website .

The Irish Research Council (IRC) normally runs a competitive scheme annually for PhD scholarships. If you are interested in applying to this scheme, you should first contact a prospective supervisor in the relevant School. Existing PhD students should discuss applications with their supervisor. For further information on this scheme, see: IRC Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme .

IRC Applications

All research students in receipt of a faculty or school funded scholarship must apply to the Irish Research Council’s Postgraduate Research scheme. The Associate Dean for Research facilitates a workshop for applicants to this scheme in October each year.  If applicants are successful in securing an award from the IRC the following information is relevant:

  • Students receive confirmation directly from the IRC re award and contract.
  • Research funds are managed by the student and supervisor in line with IRC contract.
  • The student's Supervisor receives an email from DCU Finance Office detailing the Project subcost.
  • This new subcost is set up specifically to manage your award and the Supervisor needs to complete the 'hierarchy' setup to enable transactions.
  • The associated scholarship stipend is processed via Faculty office and GSO.
  • Funds can be drawn down by purchasing materials through the Purchase order process (funds taken directly from subcost) or reclaiming expenses using the NIER process or the  Core system (if you have access).  Your Supervisor is the approver of your expenses and all expenditure must be approved prior to purchase.

Claiming Expenses

Students in receipt of a scholarship from the IRC or schools may be entitled to claim expenses depending on the terms and conditions of your contract or scholarship letter e.g. IRP or visa costs, equipment. To claim your expenses you must complete a Non Invoice Expenditure Requisition Form available via your School Assistant.  Authorisation of the expenditure is the responsibility of your Supervisor (IRC costs),  the Head of School (IRP or visa costs), or Faculty Research Administrator (faculty granted research awards) depending on the expense and the account being charged.  If you are unsure, your School Assistant will advise you. Return the completed form along with original receipts to your School Assistant.

Purchase order process (IRC Awardees only)

If you want to purchase items such as software, laptops etc. you can do so by using the University's financial system, Agresso.  The supplier e.g. Dell, may already be set up as a supplier on this system so all you need to do is send the following details to the School Assistant:

  • what you want to purchase,
  • who you want to purchase from,
  • the cost ex. VAT,
  • the VAT rate
  • your IRC subcost to charge the expense to.

This will generate a purchase order (PO) which you can send to the supplier.  The supplier should quote this PO number on their invoice which they send directly to [email protected] . When the invoice is approved by the Faculty Office, payment is issued within the next week.

How to apply

If you are applying to study in Ireland as an EU citizen, you apply for all undergraduate courses through the Central Applications Office (CAO) , unless otherwise stated. All non-EU citizens must apply directly to the higher education institutions in Ireland.

Student Visa Requirements

Ireland requires candidates from many non-EU countries to have a visa to come and study in Ireland . The student immigration process is divided into two categories, based on whether you are applying for a degree programme offered by a higher education institution or you intend to pursue an English-language or non-degree course .

Our climate can be summed up as being mild, moist and changeable with abundant rainfall and a lack of temperature extremes. You can experience all four seasons in the one day, if you're lucky!

Because the island is hugged all year round by the warm influence of the Gulf Stream, Ireland is much warmer than other countries that share its latitude. The Gulf Stream also ensures that the Irish coastline remains ice-free throughout winter.

Extreme winters are rare, and you're more likely to encounter a warm glow than a frosty reception, with average winter temperatures of between 40°F/5°C and 46°F/8°C.

Summer temperatures are generally between 60°F/15°C to 70°F/20°C. One thing that is more than probable is rain - so don?t forget to pack your rain gear!

Health Insurance

Under EU/EEA regulations, students from other member states who are attending a course of study are entitled to free hospital services provided they have Form E.109 with them. In order to be eligible you will be required to provide the Irish health authorities with documentation from your home country that validates your entitlement.

You should therefore contact the Health Authority in your home country, well in advance of travelling to Ireland, to fulfil any registration requirements and to obtain the necessary forms that you will need. From 1st June 2004, the E111 and a number of other 'E' forms (i.e. E128) have been replaced by a new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Students from non-EU countries are not covered for any free medical attention off-campus and must therefore have their own private insurance.

Please note that heavy levies are charged for all hospitalisation and it is advised to make provision for adequate medical insurance. Non-EU students are required to show proof of comprehensive medical insurance when registering with the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

Proof of health insurance is also required when applying for a student visa. Students are strongly advised to arrange insurance for private medical care as this ensures choice of hospital, doctor and hospital accommodation in the event of illness.

About Ireland

Ireland was inhabited as early as 8,000 BC. Its early Brehon Law system was highly sophisticated, and when Europe entered the Dark Ages, Ireland's monasteries remained a beacon of culture and learning throughout the continent. However, Ireland was to face its own dark times, first with the Viking and then the Anglo-Norman invasions. Ireland's darkest era, the Great Famine of 1845-49, saw over a million die and another million emigrate, sowing the first seeds of the Irish Diaspora.

The early 1900s saw a doomed uprising in 1916; a war of independence and the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty. This treaty ended British rule in 26 of the 32 counties and established an Irish Free State. In 1937, a new constitution re-established the Irish Free State as Ireland, and in 1949, Ireland was declared a Republic.

In Northern Ireland, the initially peaceful civil rights marches of the 1960s were followed by several decades of violence. However, in 1998, a peace-plan was agreed by all parties; organisations on all sides lay down their arms, and Northern Ireland is now at peace. In 2013, the Global Peace Index ranked the Republic of Ireland the 12th most peaceful nation on earth.

Punching well above its weight on the international stage, Ireland's distinctive historical circumstances combine with its unique position as a European post-colonial state, its neutrality and its trusted partner status in so many conflict zones to ensure a sustained and valuable impact. Today Ireland is recognised as a global leader (both academically and in practice) in the fields of international relations & law, peace and conflict studies, human rights and development.

The Republic of Ireland is also one of the most globalised economies in the world, according to a 2013 index produced by Ernst and Young in collaboration with the Economist Intelligence Unit. Since the 1970s, Ireland has evolved from a largely agrarian society to become a major player in the international software, food, pharmaceutical and medical technology industries.

In the wake of a major financial contraction over the period of 2008-10, the Irish government has implemented a series of tough reforms. Having shaken off the excesses of the 'Celtic Tiger' boom-years, the economy returned to growth in 2011, and all indicators are for steady, if modest, growth for the years to come.

How to Apply to a Master's in Ireland

If you've decided to study a Master's degree at a university in Ireland, you will have to gather the right documents to prove that you fit the university requirements. Provide complete personal information, previous qualifications, financial information, and a personal statement.

What documents do I need to provide to apply in Ireland?

The documents you need to present to apply for an Irish university are straightforward. That's why you can't be surprised you'll need:

  • An English proficiency certificate;
  • Your past diplomas and certificates;
  • Identity proof.

Of course, based on the programme you wish to apply to, you will need additional documents, like:

  • Personal essays or writing samples;
  • Recommendation letters;
  • Your high school grades.

Prove your English skills

The Republic of Ireland is lenient with their students, so, if you are already a native English speaker or you have studied before in English, then you won't need to provide an English certificate.

If you didn't study in English or you are not a native speaker, then you should prepare:

  • C1 Advanced or Proficiency.

Additional test scores

Obviously, if the Master's programme asks you for other test scores, you should provide them. This will depend on what degree you want to study, and at which university, so be sure to check out if you don't need BMAT or LNAT.

Application deadlines for Ireland

The Republic of Ireland is probably the country with the longest application period ever! For 9 months, students can apply for their degree, but there's a small catch: even if the application period starts in October and ends in March, whatever places weren't confirmed by other students until the 1st of May are considered vacant. So, the application process starts again from May until the 1st of July. Basically, whenever you want to apply to a university in Ireland, it's fine.

Recent international policies promote international university cooperation and student exchange between countries worldwide. High-quality study and PhD degrees are made more available to students in order to create a global educational network, achievable through student and staff mobility. Career and research oriented programmes support international student development.

University cooperation enables students study worldwide, for instance in Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States and provides ways of recognizing previous degrees. Different study options offer appropriate alternatives to students, depending on their preferred mode of study.

Many study programmes in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America are English-taught. The most popular international student destinations include the following countries: Australia, Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, the United States, and more. However, these are not the only countries offering English-taught education. The rest of the world is full of endless study choices, from highly ranked to smaller, more specialized, universities.

PhD (postgraduate) Degrees

If you want further education beyond the undergraduate level or if you want more personal development or a career in academia, you could obtain a PhD degree. PhD degrees are postgraduate programmes that usually follow a Master's, MPhil or MRes, but there might be additional requirements depending on the university. Students are required to do their own research in a chosen topic. With the help of a supervisor, you develop knowledge and analytical skills in a specific or multidisciplinary field and you carry out independent research. The duration of a PhD degree differs per country and institution. Sometimes your own research is accompanied by work for the department such as giving seminars or small group teaching.

PhD students are required to study on campus under close supervision, but there are universities that accept students enrolled into a part-time distance education PhD degree. Studying on campus can also be full-time as well as part-time, in which case the part-time variant is normally twice as long as the full-time study.

PhD in Ireland with Scholarship

PhD in Ireland can be pursued with scholarships, which are available for both domestic and international students. These scholarships are typically offered by universities, government agencies, and other organisations. Some potential avenues for pursuing a PhD with a scholarship in Ireland include:

- Irish Research Council (IRC) Scholarships

The Irish Research Council offers scholarships to support PhD research across different disciplines. These include the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship, which is open to applicants from all countries and covers a stipend, fees, and research expenses.

- Government-funded Scholarships

The Irish government, through agencies like the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), provides funding opportunities for PhD research to students. These often focus on specific research areas such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

- University-specific Scholarships

Most Irish universities have their own scholarship programmes for PhD students and these scholarships may be funded by the institution itself or by external sources. Examples of this kind of scholarship include the Trinity College Dublin Provost's PhD Project Awards and University College Dublin (UCD) scholarships.

- International Scholarships

Several international scholarships are available for non-EU students to pursue a PhD in the country. Prominent among them are the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships and the Irish Aid Fellowships, which are specifically targeted at students from developing countries.

How to Apply for a PhD in Ireland

1. research the best options.

You can start by identifying the universities and departments that offer PhD programmes in your field of interest. Look for specific faculty members or research groups whose work aligns with your research interests.

2. Contact Potential Supervisors

You may need to reach out to potential supervisors to discuss your research interests and determine if they have available positions or funding opportunities currently available. This step is crucial, as many PhD programmes in Ireland require you to secure a supervisor before submitting the application.

3. Review Admission Requirements

Visit the websites of your chosen universities and departments to review their specific admission requirements for PhD programmes. Familiarize yourself with the eligibility criteria, application deadlines, required documents, and any language proficiency requirements (usually English in Ireland).

4. Prepare a Strong Research Proposal

Your research proposal is a critical component of the final application. It should demonstrate your knowledge of the field, outline your research objectives and methodology, and also explain why your research is significant and relevant. You may seek feedback from potential supervisors or mentors to refine your proposal.

5. Submit Your Application

Complete the application form online or submit the required documents by the specified deadline. Also, pay attention to any additional instructions or submission requirements provided by the university or department.

6. Application Review and Interviews

Once your application is submitted, it will go through a review process by the admissions committee. In some cases, you may be invited for an interview, either in person or via video conferencing, to discuss your research proposal and suitability for the programme.

7. Acceptance and Enrollment

If your application is successful, you will receive an offer letter from the university.

Noting if you were successful in getting awarded a Hardiman PhD Scholarship it would be subject to meeting the entry requirements for a PhD at University of Galway and in the College of XXX ( via applying online for and being accepted onto Structured PhD course ). This is something you may wish to discuss with your potential supervisor. They may have other funding sources you could also apply for at the same time as Hardiman, so as to increase your chances of getting funding for your PhD.

It is important to apply for the PhD programme in good time if you need to apply for a visa as it can take a number of weeks to get outcome from PhD application and then a number of weeks to get outcome of visa application. This all needs to be completed before the 1 st September of coming academic year, if you are in receipt of a Hardiman scholarship.

Q: When I apply for the Hardiman Scholarship does this include consideration for the Structured PhD progamme I wish to do?

No, applying for your Structured PhD Programme is a separate application process to the applying for Hardiman PhD Scholarship.

  • To apply for your PhD programme, you first need to make contact with potential supervisor(s). • For the Hardiman Scholarship, all details are on the Hardiman PhD Scholarship webpage  in regards to applying and what is required. As part of the application process, you do need to make contact with potential supervisor and they have to complete the supervisor form (as per guidance given) and submit to [email protected] before the closing date/time.

Q: Can Hardiman Scholarship applicant apply for their PhD before or while submitting their Hardiman Scholarship applicant (which are two a separate processes)?

A: No, the PhD programme application process, this is a separate process to that of the Hardiman PhD Scholarship application process. You would have to discuss with the Postgraduate Admissions office or your proposed supervisor. HR Scholar has no involvement in this process. If you are successful in getting a Hardiman PhD Scholarship offer it will be subject to meeting the entry requirements for a PhD at the University of Galway and in the relevant College e.g. College of Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies. If you accept the offer, you will be advised at this point ‘If you have not already applied for the Structured PhD programme via the online application system you should do so now. This is a separate process to the scholarship offer.’

It is important to apply for the PhD programme in good time if you need to apply for a visa as it can take several weeks to get outcome from PhD application and then a number of weeks to get outcome of visa application. Q: What are the rules for including endnotes and bibliography with the application?  May I include it on the application form or should I put them in a separate document?

A: As per the  Applicant's Guide  (available on the webpage ) Step 2: Application 1. A complete Hardiman scholarship application requires completion of the application form, the supervisor form and two academic reference forms. Non-adherence to the word count or page limit may result in the application or part of it, not being assessed. Please provide any other relevant information of your application.

Q: Can I input e.g. appendices including plots, diagrams and references in the personal research statement section or will this affect the word count?

A: The personal research statement allows a maximum of 1,000 words. There are no word limits for the sections Research Experience and Any Other Information . Ireland is one of the most globalised nations in the world.  We are a high-technology, trading economy which is home to many of the world’s leading companies in the areas of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, financial services, ICT and the internet.  Ireland receives more US investment than the BRIC counties combined.  We’re a small country, but we’re a global people – over 80 million people worldwide claim Irish descent.  Our culture is a global phenomenon – from our four Nobel prize winners in literature to world-beating musicians such as U2 to our renowned Riverdance.  We have transformed our economy through investment in science, and we’re now a global player in R&D.  We also have a long-standing and deep commitment to international development, and fighting poverty and hunger worldwide.

That’s why we value individuals with a global perspective.  Ireland’s higher education system has one of the strongest reputations in Europe for producing highly employable graduates.  The Irish Government wants to provide the opportunity to talented international students to study in Ireland and take a crucial step in advancing their career.

The Government of Ireland International Scholarships are targeted at international students who have the potential to be future leaders in their field and who are committed to making a difference in the world.  The programme supports one year’s study by talented international students at Irish higher education institutions.

  • Scholarships for Masters Students in Ireland

Written by Taru Medha

If you want to be a part of the legacy of world-class education at Irish universities, there are a number of Masters scholarships and other funding options available to support both national and international students.

As an added bonus, international students pay the same rate as domestic students for most courses. However, the tuition fee in Ireland depends greatly on the course and the institution.

This guide lists, in detail, the cost of a Masters course in Ireland and the funding options that are available to you as an international student

Masters fee in Ireland

The cost of studying in Ireland varies between programmes and subject areas. It is always a good idea to double check the fee with your university before calculating the total cost of your Masters and how much funding you require.

Though this is not the case for all programmes, university fees for international students in Ireland (non-EU nationals) are sometimes higher. Business courses are more likely to have similar fees for international and domestic students, whereas Arts and Humanities courses are likely to charge higher fees to non-EU students. We have created the table below with data from the official Study in Ireland website so you can compare the university fees in Ireland between different programmes and check if you’ll be charged more as a non-EU national.

Subject EU Nationals Non-EU Nationals
Medicine €18,000 – €32,000 €18,000 - €32,000
Engineering €9,950 – €25,000 €9,950 – €25,000
Science and Technology €9,950 – €27,000 €9,950 – €27,000
Arts and Humanities €9,950- €19,000 €9,950- €19,000

Even though international students in Ireland usually pay about the same, the tuition fee is just one of the many things you'll need to budget for. The cost of studying in Ireland can add up when you start thinking about accommodation, food, entertainment etc, and it is always a good idea to look at the funding options available whether you are a domestic or international Masters student.

You can also have a look at our living in Ireland guide to know more about the cost of living, which will help you work out how much you need to fund your studies and student life.

Under the terms of the Employment-Based Postgraduate Programme, researchers will receive a full salary during their studies. Your employer will be expected to provide at least €9,000 per year towards your salary / travel expenses, while the scholarship will itself provide €27,500 per year, broken down into the following elements:

  • €18,500 contribution to your salary
  • €5,750 towards tuition fees

Irish postgraduate student grants

Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is the Irish student finance agency. In some cases, EU, EEA, UK or Swiss nationals (as well as those who have leave to remain in Ireland) can apply for financial support through SUSI.

If you’ve been living in Ireland for three out of the last five years, you could be eligible to apply for a contribution towards your tuition fees, as well as a maintenance grant (subject to qualifying as a ‘disadvantaged student’ who meets certain conditions).

If you’ve been living in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland (but outside Ireland) for three out of the last five years, you could be eligible for a contribution towards your tuition fees only (not a maintenance grant).

Depending on your personal circumstances, you could receive between €2,000 and €6,270 as a contribution towards your tuition fees.

The maintenance grant is worth €2,375 if you ordinarily live within 45km of your university, but €5,915 if you ordinarily live outside of this radius.

Applications for the following academic year open in April and can be made online via SUSI .

For more information on eligibility for Irish student finance, please visit SUSI or the Citizens Information Board .

  • Grad school scholarships provide funds to cover your educational costs.
  • In general, you don't have to repay scholarships or grants after graduation.
  • Start your search for grad school scholarships with your school's financial aid office.

Graduate school can help you take your career ambitions to the next level. But the cost can be very high. That's where grad school scholarships and grants come in. Scholarships and grants don't need to be repaid, which means you can leave school with minimum drag on your post-graduation finances.

Merit-based vs. need-based scholarships

Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on your academic achievements and other achievements. In contrast, need-based scholarships are awarded based on the financial need of the student.

Subject-specific scholarships

Beyond these need-based and merit-based scholarships, you can find specialized scholarships designed for particular fields of study or demographics. For example, you might find a scholarship opportunity based on your prior military experience or your desire to obtain a graduate degree in STEM.

Your university

Before you can snag a scholarship, you'll have to find the opportunity and apply for it. Your school's financial aid office is a good place to start your search because they might have information on school-specific scholarships.

Online scholarship databases

You can also find scholarship opportunities through online search engines, like the U.S. Department of Labor's free tool or Scholarships.com . To locate scholarships specific to you, filter searches by "graduate level" and your field of study.

Professional organizations and employers

Many organizations offer some form of scholarship or tuition reimbursement to students pursuing related careers, or those gaining skills to aid in their existing role.

Grant databases

Grants are another form of funding that you usually don't have to pay back. Below are some of the most popular grants for grad school:

  • Federal grants: Some federal grants are available to graduate students, including the TEACH Grant, which is designed to prepare them for teaching at the elementary or secondary school level. After graduation, grant recipients must teach full-time for at least four years in a school that serves low-income students. Skipping the teaching commitment means you'll have to repay the funds.
  • State grants : Many states provide grant opportunities to students. In some cases, these grants are designed to support students pursuing a graduate degree that's relevant to the state's needs.
  • Institutional grants : Many colleges and universities provide grant opportunities to students. You can find out about these opportunities through your school's financial aid office.
  • Private grants: Some organizations and foundations offer grant funding to graduate students. In most cases, you'll need to meet some specific eligibility requirements to apply.

Tapping into this source of free money for college is a worthwhile option. If you are interested in grant funding, start by filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to potentially tap into federal grant opportunities.

In terms of state-level, institutional, and private grants, you'll need to do some research to find grants that might apply to your unique situation. Consider reaching out to your school's financial aid office, they might have more information on grant opportunities you can apply for.

When you find an enticing opportunity, it's important to craft a compelling application. Many scholarships require an essay, which could make or break your chances.

"Writing essays for a graduate scholarship is not the same as it was for undergraduates," says Ben Ralston, president of Sachs Foundation , an organization that provides scholarship opportunities to Black Coloradans.

"You are later in your career and can focus less on what you want to do with your education and more about what you have already accomplished," Ralston says. "Get specific in how graduate studies will develop more professional skills to build on previous accomplishments instead of speaking more generally about future goals."

Start early and apply often

It's important to note that the scholarship search process can take quite a bit of time, and once you've identified scholarships to apply for, you'll need time to prepare. Don't be selective with your scholarship applications; The more scholarships you apply to, the better your chances of winning.

Tailor your applications

When applying, personalize your essays and highlight how your experience aligns with the scholarship's mission. Be sure to triple-check your essays, and ensure that you're not referencing a separate scholarship opportunity from the one you're applying for.

Can’t Be Grateful Enough

UB Students in white lab coats talking in front of light blue windows.

Mario Rocci Jr. (BS ’76, PhD ’81) wants others to receive the support he received at UB.

Mario Rocci Jr., BS ’76, PhD ’81.

Mario Rocci Jr., BS ’76, PhD ’81

Mario Rocci Jr., BS ’76, PhD ’81, an international leader in contract research, retired in late 2017, bringing to a close a career that provided him with what seemed like boundless opportunity. Now, with time to reflect on the circumstances that contributed to his success, Rocci and his wife, Donna, are gratefully acknowledging “the world-class education” he received at UB.

Recently the couple made a substantial commitment in their estate to fund two named endowments in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences: one that will provide scholarships for PharmD and graduates students; and another, to endow a department chair.

“I want to be able to help as many students as possible,” says Rocci, “of course, with a soft spot in my heart for bright students who don’t have the financial resources to go to school. They’ve worked hard all their lives, and I hate to think that money would keep them from fulfilling their potential.”

By endowing a chair, Rocci wants “to help budding faculty get a start with early proof-of-concept research,” the type of research outside funding agencies don’t usually risk supporting. “We need to have these dreamers,” says Rocci. “I have no problem funding ideas that are out of the box and that will probably fail; but in the event they succeed, they could be big.”

Big ideas that fall outside the box are things Rocci knows about firsthand. A native of Utica, N.Y., he had a strong aptitude for science and mathematics as an undergraduate at UB, but wasn’t sure what profession he wanted to pursue. A cousin 10 years older than he, and a UB alumnus, was a pharmacist and encouraged him to explore the field. Rocci did and his interest took off when he was introduced to his cousin’s roommate in college, William Jusko, PhD, now a SUNY Distinguished Professor in the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. While a pharmacy student, Rocci began working in Jusko’s lab and became motivated to pursue a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences as a result of the strong mentorship he received from Jusko and other prominent faculty in the school, including Milo Gibaldi, Gerhard Levy and Leung Fung.

Following graduate school, Rocci took a position at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Penn., where he was part of a team of clinical pharmacologists conducting first-in-man studies on drugs that today have become mainstays of therapy, such as statins, ACE inhibitors and ulcer medications. “It was a fantastic experience,” Rocci recalls. “Our unit gave a statin for the first time to a human being! The pharmaceutical industry was beginning to boom, and I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.”

After eight years, Rocci had an opportunity to move back to Utica and develop from scratch an FDA- regulated drug development testing division within Oneida Research Services, a microelectronics testing company. The division was enormously successful and was later spun off into its own company, Prevalere Life Sciences, which Rocci headed as CEO for about six years. In 2008, Prevalere was sold to ICON, an Ireland-based contract research organization (CRO). “We were very proud of what we had done in the Utica area, and almost every large CRO wantedto acquire us,” Rocci says, “so we were very careful to make sure we had a good fit, which we did with ICON.”

Until his retirement, Rocci worked for ICON, where he held numerous prominent positions, including president of ICON Development Solutions, their early-phase clinical testing division, a role in which he supervised some 500 employees.

Over the last two decades of his career Rocci served a wide variety of professional associations, becoming president of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT)—the only person to serve both these associations in this capacity.

In looking back, Rocci says “Because of the scholarship assistance at UB, I got a worldclass education and left school debt free. Now how many places does that happen?"

“And I was always so amazed at the training I got at UB,” he adds. “Throughout my career I felt I was very well prepared to interact with all my colleagues because my education was so rigorous. So it became a question of, well, if I don’t give back, I limit the ability of this institution to continue doing the good things that it’s doing. I can’t be grateful enough for the opportunity folks at UB gave me, so Donna and I want to help extend this opportunity for others.”
