Howling Wraiths  is a Spell  in Hollow Knight .  Spells are magical active skills that complement The Knight 's offensive and defensive capabilities. Each Spell is powered by SOUL  and has a base cost of 33 required to cast.  Howling Wraiths releases a blast of screaming souls upwards, dealing damage above and around the Knight.

Hollow Knight Howling Wraiths Function & Usage

The Howling Wraiths spell releases a burst of screaming souls upwards in a large, cloud-like formation, damaging opponents above and around the knight. It is performed by pressing the Focus/Cast or Quick Cast while holding Up  on the D-Pad.

  • Howling Wraiths  hits 3 times over a very quick animation. Each hit deals 13 base damage, allowing the spell to deal up to  39 total damage.
  • The spell has a very large and wide hitbox, allowing it to also hit opponents who aren't directly above the Knight.
  • Howling Wraiths can be cast both on the ground and in mid-air. When cast in mid-air, it stalls the Knight for a split second, allowing them to stay in the air longer which can be useful for avoiding certain attacks or projectiles, or to simply delay the Knight's descent.
  • Howling Wraiths can later be upgraded into the Abyss Shriek  spell.

How to Obtain the Howling Wraiths Spell in Hollow Knight

The  Howling Wraiths spell is found next to the corpse of a large  Snail Shaman in the Overgrown Mound , a sub-area located in the western section of Fog Canyon . The mound is near the entrance to the Queen's Gardens .

Hollow Knight Howling Wraiths Spell Modifiers

The  Howling Wraiths spell can be modified by the following Charms :

  • Shaman Stone - Improves  Howling Wraiths 's damage by  ~50% , increasing each hit's damage from 13 to 20 and raising the spell's total damage to  60 .
  • Spell Twister  - Reduces the SOUL  cost to  24 per cast.

Hollow Knight Howling Wraiths Notes & Tips

  • The  Snail Shaman 's corpse next to the  Howling Wraiths  spell can be hit with the Dream Nail . The Shaman's  Dream Nail dialogue reads  "...Hear...me..."

How to Obtain the Howling Wraiths Spell in Hollow Knight

Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight , follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, which is now a kingdom in ruins because of a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he can unlock new abilities, spells, and charms that will help him traverse through different areas of Hallownest and defeat enemies.

One of the useful spells in the game is the Howling Wraiths spell . This spell allows the Knight to release a blast of Soul above and around the Knight. With the Howling Wraith spell, the Knight will have a new way of defeating enemies in Hallownest, and in this guide, you will learn how to obtain the Howling Wraiths spell!

A screenshot showing the Howling Wraiths Spell location in Hollow Knight

The Howling Wraiths spell can be found in the easternmost part of the room inside the Overgrown Mound, on the western side of the Fog Canyon .

In the Fog Canyon , the Knight will encounter different kinds of enemies like Uomas, Oomas, and Charged Lumaflies . Additionally, in the Overgrown Mound , the Knight will encounter a lot of Squits and some Mossflies .

So the Knight will be able to traverse Fog Canyon more easily, it is recommended that the Knight should have the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a double jump in mid-air, and the Mantis Claw ability, which enables the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them, and the Isma’s Tear ability, which allows the Knight to swim in pools of acid without taking any damage. With these abilities, obtaining the Howling Wraiths spell is very easy.

To obtain the Howling Wraiths spell, this is what the Knight must do:

  • Starting from the Queen’s Station Stagway Bench , take the exit on the right , jump up the platforms, head to the top, and take the exit on the left.
  • The Knight has now arrived in Fog Canyon. Head to the very top of the room and take the exit on the left. In this room, the Knight will encounter a lot of Uomas and Oomas. Be careful when attacking Oomas; it will pop its shell, and its orange core will explode on the Knight.
  • Next, the Knight will encounter much more of Uomas and Oomas. Head to the shaft’s middle part and take the left exit.
  • In this next room, the Knight will encounter a lot of Charged Lumaflies and a pool of acid below. Head to the left, pass through the large platform with spikes on it and all the Charged Lumaflies and take the exit on the left at the end of the room. It is worth noting that with Isma’s Tear ability, the Knight can swim in the acid below to pass through all the Charged Lumaflies and spikes without damage.
  • Next, head to the left, head up the next shaft, continue to the left, and drop down on the following path. There, you will find the entrance to the Overgrown Mound and a couple of Mossflies. Enter the Overgrown Mound to continue. Another thing worth noting is that the Knight can destroy the wooden bracing on the right to create a shortcut to the entrance of the Overgrown Mound.
  • Afterward, head to the right, where you will encounter two Squits. Then, the Knight will eventually reach a large part of the room with small platforms in the middle and spikes at the bottom. Upon trying to exit this part of the room through the path on the top right, the pathway to continue and the pathway back will be closed, and to continue, the Knight must first defeat all the Squits in the room.
  • After defeating all the Squits, the pathway to continue will be opened. Head to the right, where the Knight will encounter another Squit (it is worth mentioning that there is a Geo Deposit that another Squit guards at the end of this path), head down on the next path, head to the left, and you will find what looks like a spirit right next to a snail shaman’s corpse. Jump towards the spirit, and the Knight will obtain the Howling Wraiths spell !

A screenshot showing the Howling Wraiths spell in Hollow Knight

As mentioned above, the Howling Wraiths spell allows the Knight to release a blast of Soul above and around the Knight. Press the assigned FOCUS or CAST button to perform it while holding the UP movement button. The wave of energy released will be in an arc above and around the Knight, which deals three hits.

The Howling Wraiths spell is six times the strength of the Old Nail, and If all three hits make contact with an enemy, the damage dealt is twice as much as the damage dealt by the Vengeful Spirit spell. Like casting the Vengeful Spirit spell, the Knight will stall in mid-air if the Howling Wraiths spell is performed mid-air.

Equipping certain Charms can help increase the damage output of spells like the Shaman Stone charm, which increases the damage output of the Howling Wraith spell by almost 50%. Additionally, equipping the Spell Twister charm lowers the cost of Soul to cast the Howling Wraiths spell.

Now that the Knight knows the Howling Wraiths spell, the Knight has a new way of defeating common enemies and bosses in Hallownest!

Hollow Knight: How To Get Every Spell

We list every spell in Hollow Knight and where to get them.

Hollow Knight is a tricky metroidvania set in a delightful and enormous underground world. The sheer amount of lore and collectibles in this game are astounding, not to mention the variety of enemies and the scope of the map. Spells are one of the most important tools for defeating key bosses and opening up new locations, and as such, it's in your best interest to fortify your Knight with as many of these spells as possible.

RELATED: Hollow Knight: How To Get Every Mask Shard

There are six spells total that the Knight can acquire, three base spells and three upgrades:

  • Vengeful Spirit  and its upgrade  Shade Soul
  • Desolate Dive  and its upgrade  Descending Dark
  • Howling Wraiths  and its upgrade  Abyss Shriek

Each of the spells consumes a small amount of the Knight's Soul reserve, so they can not be used when the Knight's stores of Soul are depleted.

The spells have been laid out here in the order the player is most likely to encounter them, but since there is no right or wrong way to play Hollow Knight, the player may encounter these spells in a completely different order. The only general rule is that base spells  (Vengeful Spirit, Desolate Dive, Howling Wraiths)  must be acquired before their respective upgrades unless you're using a mod.

Vengeful Spirit

The Vengeful Spirit is a useful and powerful range attack that fires a burst of Soul from the Knight's reserves in a horizontal line away from the Knight. It can be used while jumping or while on the ground and is a relatively quick attack.

RELATED: Hollow Knight: 10 Pieces Of Cut Content

How To Get Vengeful Spirit

You can, and must, get this spell fairly early on in the game since it's located in the first section of Hallownest and is needed in order to enter the Greenpath. This spell is located directly left of the False Knight , which Corniferous will have marked on his original portion of the map.

Once you've defeated the False Knight, head to the left to the next room, which will be creepily adorned with bug skulls on sticks. Climb to the top of this room to find the lair of the Snail Shaman, an area called the Ancestral Mound.

Speak to the Snail Shaman in his lair, and he will offer you the Vengeful Spirit. Jump into it to accept the spell.

Note: accepting the Vengeful Spirit will trap you in a new location with a mini-boss that must be defeated before exploring Hallownest further.

Desolate Dive

The Desolate Dive is a vertical attack that uses a small amount of the Knight's Soul reserves to shoot directly down at the ground. It can be used while jumping or while standing, but it is a bit unwieldy to use for attacking.

Its primary purpose is to break areas of weak ground or cracked glass windows, to further open up areas for the Knight to explore. Patches of shaky ground that can be destroyed are often accompanied by a sound effect that sounds like tumbling pebbles, and an animation where tiny rocks jump up from the ground.

How To Get Desolate Dive

This spell is immediately acquirable after defeating the formidable boss the Soul Master. The Soul Master is located in the top room of the Soul Sanctum, a higher sub-section of the City of Tears.

Once you've defeated the Soul Master, Desolate Dive will automatically appear in front of the Knight. Jump into it to acquire the spell.

Note: Soul Master is a two-phase battle. Don't get complacent!

Howling Wraiths

Howling Wraiths is a vertical area attack that uses a portion of the Knight's reserve Soul to attack upwards in a cloud around the Knight.

RELATED: Ranked: The 10 Hardest Hollow Knight Bosses (With Tips To Beat Them)

This attack can be used while jumping or standing and can be useful against flying enemies, although it only deals damage in a narrow radius around the Knight.

How To Get Howling Wraiths

This spell can be found by entering a sub-location in Fog Canyon called the Overgrown Mound. This location is found to the far left of Fog Canyon.

There is no major boss to defeat here, although the player will encounter an abundance of Squits that must be destroyed before the spell can be obtained. Once the Squits have been defeated, continue right through Fog Canyon to find the husk of a large Snail Shaman, and the Howling Wraiths spell floating beside it. Jump into the spell to acquire it.

This spell is an upgrade for Vengeful Spirit and will replace that spell once it has been acquired. It is a more powerful version of Vengeful Spirit spell that functions the same way and consumes the same amount of Soul.

Keys To Shade Soul

Accessing the location of the Shade Soul requires first getting  two literal key items . The first key item to acquire is the Shopkeeper's Key . This can be found in the Crystal Peaks area, close to the bench in the middle of the area.

Once you have the Shopkeeper's Key, return to Dirtmouth and visit Sly's shop. The Shopkeeper's Key will open up his storeroom where he keeps his rare items. These items then become available to purchase. Among them is the second key item that must be bought for 800 Geo: the Elegant Key .

How To Get Shade Soul

The Elegant Key can be used to open up a locked door located in the Soul Sanctum, a subsection of the City of Tears.

Hint: On the elevator up to the locked door there is a secret breakable wall on the left. Smashing it will allow the Knight to travel quickly between the Soul Sanctum and the nearest bench.

Behind the locked door in the Soul Sanctum is a tough mini-boss battle against a Soul Warrior and his Folly summons (which is why the shortcut to the bench is handy!).

Hint: this battle is made much easier by using Pale Ore to upgrade to the Channelled Nail, which allows the Knight to one-shot kill each Folly.

RELATED: Hollow Knight: Pale Ore Location Guide

Once you've defeated this boss, continue left and above the fight area to find a strange bug figure attached to a device. Examine the figure to consume the Shade Soul.

Descending Dark

This spell is an upgrade for Desolate Dive and will replace that spell once it has been acquired.

RELATED: Hollow Knight: Every Area Of The Hallownest, Ranked

Like the Shade Soul, it is a more powerful version of its base spell that functions the same way and consumes the same amount of Soul.

How To Get Descending Dark

Descending Dark can be acquired in a sublocation at the bottom right of the Crystal Peak called the Crystallised Mound.

Inside the Crystallised Mound is a challenging platforming section. There is no maze, or map, so follow the path to the right across the platforms until you encounter a  Snail Shaman imprisoned in a crystal.  Destroy the crystalized Shaman to receive the Descending Dark.

Abyss Shriek

The Abyss Shriek is an upgrade for the Howling Wraiths and will replace that spell once it has been acquired. It is again a more powerful and darker version of its base spell that functions the same way and consumes the same amount of Soul.

RELATED: Hollow Knight: Where You Can Get Simple Keys (& Where To Use Them)

The Abyss Shriek upgrade can only be obtained after receiving the King's Mark. (The King's Mark is located in the Cast-Off Shell, a sublocation in the Kingdom's Edge area that can only be reached after encountering Hornet for the second time.) The King's Mark will allow the Knight to break the seal at the bottom of the Ancient Basin and enter the Abyss, the lowest section of Hallownest.

How To Get Abyss Shriek

The Abyss Shriek is located in a tiny room in the left-most area of the Abyss.

In this room is a square stone surrounded by statues that bear faces resembling the Howling Wraith attack. Stand on the stone and perform the Howling Wraith to receive the Abyss Shriek upgrade.

This IGN wiki guide page contains information on where to find each and every one of the Spells in Hollow Knight. For a complete guide on how to make it through Hollow Knight, be sure to check out our Walkthrough .

To learn how to obtain the various other Collectibles Hollow Knight has to offer, visit our pages on Charms , Spells , Mask Shards , and more.

There are three different Spells to obtain in Hollow Knight. Each one consumes a small amount of Soul to deal damage in a specific direction. One Spell can even grant access to new areas, and every Spell has an upgrade which can be obtained to increase the power, duration, or area of effect of the Spell.

Spells will always be available once obtained, and cannot be unequipped. While the various attributes of the Spells will be augmented by obtaining their upgrade, the cost always stays the same, so there is no downside to upgrading them.

VENGEFUL SPIRIT

Vengeful Spirit 0.png

Vengeful Spirit is a powerful Spell which consumes a small amount of Soul to conjure a large, fast-moving ball of energy which moves in a straight line away from the Knight, damaging any enemies in its path. It can be used on the ground or while in the air.

The Vengeful Spirit Spell can be obtained after completing the False Knight boss encounter in the Forgotten Crossroads . Head left from the boss arena and climb up through the tunnels to arrive at the Ancestral Mound sub-area. Head inside and talk to the Snail Shaman to obtain the Vengeful Spirit spell.

Vengeful Spirit Map.png

VENGEFUL SPIRIT UPGRADE: SHADE SOUL

Shade Soul 4.png

The Vengeful Spirit Spell upgrade, Shade Soul, is located in the City of Tears sub-area, Soul Sanctum. It can be obtained once the player has obtained the Elegant Key, which can be purchased from Sly in Dirthmouth after the player has found both Sly (located in the bottom-right section of Forgotten Crossroads) and the Shopkeeper’s Key (located in the northern section of Crystal Peaks).

With the Elegant Key in hand, head north from Relic Seeker Lemm’s shop, then head right once you reach the top of the path. Follow the path up and to the left and you’ll soon arrive at a locked door. Use the Elegant Key to open it. Follow the path and defeat the Soul Warrior miniboss encounter and you’ll find a device. Activate the device to obtain the Shade Soul Spell.

DESOLATE DIVE

The Royal Waterways 3.png

Desolate Dive is a powerful Spell which consumes a small amount of Soul to initiate a dive attack. It can be used on the ground or while in the air, and is able to break shaking sections of ground, or various shaky items (such as the casket in Resting Grounds, etc.). Desolate Dive grants the Knight a small window of invincibility during the attack, so it can be used to avoid skyward strikes while dashing, to deal significant damage to strong grounded enemies, or to land safely amidst a swarm of weaker enemies.

The Desolate Dive Spell can be obtained by defeating Soul Master in the upper left region of the City of Tears, at the top of the Soul Sanctum sub-area. After defeating the Soul Master’s second phase, the Desolate Dive Spell will appear in the air at the center of the arena.

Soul Master Map.png

DESOLATE DIVE UPGRADE: DESCENDING DARK

Descending Dark 0.png

The Desolate Dive upgrade, Descending Dark, can be obtained in the Crystallized Mound sub-area, located in the eastern region of Crystal Peak . It can be obtained once the player has access to the Crystal Heart.

Enter the Crystallized Mound and proceed through the various spiked switch platforms and you’ll find a crystallized Snail Shaman. Attack and shatter the crystal prison and the Void will erupt in the area, suffusing the Knight will dark energy and empowering the Desolate Dive Spell, turning it into Descending Dark.

HOWLING WRAITHS

Abyss Shriek 1.png

Howling Wraiths is a powerful Spell which consumes a small amount of Soul to deal damage in a large cone above the Knight. It is extremely useful for taking out aerial threats and dealing with dive-bombing enemies, especially while navigating tricky platforming sections. It can be used on the ground or while in the air.

The Howling Wraiths Spell can be found in the far left section of Fog Canyon , in a sub-area called the Overgrown Mound. Enter the Overgrown Mound and head right, and you’ll soon be locked in an arena with a swarm of Squits. Dispatch then, then head right and you’ll find the Howling Wraiths Spell hovering in the air next to the corpse of a Snail Shaman.

Howling Wraiths Map.png

HOWLING WRAITHS UPGRADE: ABYSS SHRIEK

Abyss Shriek 3.png

Once you have obtained the Howling Wraiths Spell, and have branded yourself with the Kingsbrand in Kingdom’s Edge, you can obtain the Abyss Shriek upgrade in The Abyss . At the bottom of the main shaft, head left through the long corridor and you’ll find a small platform, surrounded by shrieking stone faces which resemble the forms created by the Howling Wraiths Spell.

Stand on the platform and cast Howling Wraiths and the Void will emerge and suffuse The Knight, who will then obtain the Abyss Shriek Spell.

Welcome to our Hollow Knight guide. The first thing you need to know about this game is that it's a 'Metroidvania' game. The term Metroidvania derives from Castlevania and Metroid. As you can imagine, Metroidvania games feature mechanics similar to these 2 games. More importantly, these games feature a world containing locked doors and passages that the player can see from at any point, but can only access after meeting certain requirements, such as a key, an ability, etc. Hollow Knight doesn't hold your hand or tell you what to do; you are dropped in this world and it is up to you to explore, discover and finish. This guide will help you explore the maps, find optional items and progress with the story (hopefully).

In this section we'll go through the most basic aspects of the game and some general tips.

Health is represented with little white masks on the top left corner of the screen. You start with 5 and every time you're hit, touch spikes or any other damage dealing structures, you lose one mask. Being hit with only one mask left means death. You will be teleported to your last rest stop and lose all your Geo (the game's currency). You will leave a 'Shade' behind. A ghost that will have to kill in order to recover your stuff. Killing enemies will replenish your soul bar, which is what you use to 'Focus' and recover hit points. Check your configurations to see which key triggers focus, you will have to press and hold, your character will charge and recover hit points.

The game's currency. You can get these by killing enemies or hitting Geo rocks. The latter are found scattered all over the world.

Completion Rate

This game features a 107% completion rate. Many items, abilities, spells, quests and bosses contribute towards that percentage. We will do our best to list every item and might make a more detailed section later on.

  • Do not worry too much about grinding Geo early in the game. The Geo drop rate proggressively scales as you make progress. Make enough to buy a Map, Compass, and a Quill. These will help you explore the world. Grinding for more than this can end up being a waste of time, as you will get more Geo innevitably.
  • Jump and hit. This is how you get to some places that are otherwise unreachable. When you jump and aim down before you attack, you can bounce depending what you hit. Spikes and other structures will make you bounce and reach higher altitude with your jumps.
  • Explore. The game doesn't tell you where to go, and the only way to progress is to explore and trigger events, find keys, items, among other things that will help you progress through the game.
  • Avoid death. If you've got Mask left and ahead there are only hard enemies or you don't wanna risk it, quit the game and load your save. You will maintain all your progress and spawn on the last Bench you rested at.

Charms & Notches

In Hollow Knight, there are rare special items called “Charms” that can be acquired throughout the game. These items will give the Knight a number of bonuses depending on which Charms are being used, and can only be equipped and unequipped when resting on a bench. Charms occupy slots called Notches. You can equip as many Charms as you want, as long as you don't exceed the number of Notches. You start the game with only three Notches to use, so there isn’t a lot of choice in what Charms you can use together at the beginning, or if you can use multiple charms at all. Like Charms, more Notches can be found throughout the game. There are 45 Charms in total, although only 40 can be kept at any one time as 5 are able to be replaced throughout the game. There are a total of 11 Notches in the game.

There is a way for the player to equip a Charm if they don’t have the necessary Notches to do so. After attempting to equip a Charm five times, it will eventually work, however the Knight will become Overcharmed. While the Knight is Overcharmed, the health bar will have a purple aura and the Knight will take twice as much damage from anything that can cause it. To remove this effect, remove the Charm that broke the Notch limit. You will not be able to add an additional Charm if all of the Notches are in use, and only one Charm can be equipped past the Notch limit.

Spells & Abilities

The white energy that can be gained by hitting enemies and Soul Totems is referred to as SOUL. It can be seen in the top left corner of the screen as a circular meter that will fill up with a white liquid as SOUL is gained, giving the meter a mask appearance when it’s full.

howling wraiths spell location

SOUL is needed to use the Focus ability, which heals the player, or to cast spells to attack enemies. When the meter does not have enough to be used, the colour inside will be a dull grey, but once enough SOUL is accumulated, it will glow for a moment before becoming white inside.

Of course, with Focus and the variety of spells you will be using, the SOUL you collect will deplete very quickly. Soul Vessels can be acquired throughout the game and are used as additional storage for SOUL. They are shown as small circles left of the main SOUL meter. When the main meter has empty space, any SOUL stored in the Soul Vessels will quickly fill up the main meter.

Hollow Knight has a large variety of enemies to fight, ranging from completely harmless to downright terrifying. In this section we’ll list all of the enemies you can encounter, where to find them and what they drop, as well as any additional information.

You can obtain an item called the Hunter’s Journal after finding a camouflaged creature called The Hunter in Greenpath. Once given to you, any enemy you kill or have already killed will be added to the journal. To gain more information on a type of enemy, you’ll have to kill it again a certain number of times depending on the enemy.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: King’s Pass, Forgotten Crossroads, Greenpath.
  • Drops: 2 Geo.
  • Kills for Journal: 1.
  • Behaviour: Pretty docile, simply wanders back and forth without paying the Knight any attention. It cannot climb up walls or along ceilings.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: Forgotten Crossroads, Greenpath.
  • Drops: 3 Geo.
  • Kills for Journal: 45.
  • Behaviour: Limits its flight to a small area when undisturbed. Once the Knight comes in range, it will let out a squawk before diving to attack. Killing this enemy is easy as it constantly moves towards you, simply stand still and hit it when it flies in range, or jump down to strike at it.

howling wraiths spell location

Vengefly King

  • Locations: Greenpath.
  • Drops: 65 Geo.
  • Kills for Journal: 2.
  • Behaviour: First seen hanging from the ceiling with the old Knight Zote in its clutches. Jump up and strike at it to initiate the fight. Despite its size, the Vengefly King isn’t too hard to take down, and only has two attacks. It’s more common attack involves it opening its jaw wide and lunging down at the Knight before curving back up. You can easily avoid this attack by jumping over it as it moves towards you, even down striking it to get some extra damage in. Its second attack is a screech that summons 1 to 3 Vengeflies to help attack you. You’ll want to take them out quickly as they’ll make dodging the Vengefly King harder.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: Forgotten Crossroads, Gruz Mother (summoned as help).
  • Kills for Journal: 30.
  • Behaviour: It flies around aimlessly, bumping into walls, changing direction after coming into contact with whatever it flies into. Easiest way to kill it is to follow behind and hit it to avoid it bumping into you.

howling wraiths spell location

Gruz Mother

  • Locations: Forgotten Crossroads.
  • Drops: 50 Geo.
  • Kills for Journal: 3.
  • Behaviour: Found sleeping in a boss area, and will only attack once she takes damage. Unlike her offspring, the Gruz Mother has two attacks she can use. A ramming attack, where she will charge herself into an enemy, and a second, somewhat unpredictable attack, bouncing from the ceiling to the floor and back again at an enemy. When she charges, you can simply jump over her and attack her from behind when she slams into the wall. With her second attack, it’s easy to predict where she impacts and stand in a spot of safety as she goes on her rampage. Once the Gruz Mother dies, she will spawn a swarm of Gruzzers, consisting of 7-8. They must also be killed in order to leave the boss area, but will drop nothing.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: Forgotten Crossroads, Ancestral Mound, Greenpath.
  • Behaviour: Relatively harmless if you don’t come into contact with them. They crawl and climb along the surface of the platform they reside, able to make their way up walls and along ceilings. They do not try and attack the Knight.

howling wraiths spell location

Aspid Hunter

  • Drops: 6 Geo.
  • Kills for Journal: 20.
  • Behaviour: Before being approached by the Knight, it will hover around aimlessly. It prefers to attack at a long range, spitting orange blobs of Infection at its enemy. Try to get in close as soon as possible to strike it down.

howling wraiths spell location

Aspid Mother

  • Drops: 10 Geo.
  • Kills for Journal: 15.
  • Behaviour: Like the Aspid Hunter, she will hover about until the Knight approaches. She attacks by spawning Aspid Hatchlings to fight, birthing them one at a time. She can only spawn in a maximum of four at any time, but they can easily overwhelm you early in the game. It’s best to take the mother out as soon as possible to avoid getting swarmed by her children. She’ll spawn two more hatchlings once defeated.

howling wraiths spell location

Aspid Hatchling

  • Locations: Aspid Mother (summoned as help).
  • Drops: Nothing.
  • Behaviour: Spawned by an Aspid Mother, it will immediately fly for the Knight if they’re still in range. Easy to deal with when there’s only one or two, but can quickly become a problem if four swarm you. Two more will spawn when an Aspid Mother is killed.

howling wraiths spell location

Wandering Husk

  • Kills for Journal: 35.
  • Behaviour: Wanders about back and forth when undisturbed. When the Knight comes into range, it will run and flail its arms in their direction, dealing damage when it comes into contact. You can either stand still and hit the husk back as it approaches, or jump over it as it tries to rush you and strike at it from behind.

howling wraiths spell location

Husk Hornhead

  • Drops: 4 Geo.
  • Behaviour: Like the Wandering Husk, it will wander aimlessly until the Knight approaches it. As soon as it’s disturbed, it will lower its head and charge at you, but can be easily dealt with by standing still and hitting it back as it charges, or jumping over it to strike from behind.

howling wraiths spell location

Leaping Husk

  • Behaviour: Wanders back and forth until the Knight comes into range. It attacks by leaping and landing on you, but can easily be avoided if the surface is at ground level. Strike at it as soon as it’s back on the ground.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Wanders back and forth until the Knight comes into range. Its attack is much like that of the Wandering Husk, but having a heavier body slows its attack down and shortens the distance. Due to this, it’s relatively easy to take out and only a real threat when dealing with multiple enemies.

howling wraiths spell location

Husk Warrior

  • Kills for Journal: 25.
  • Behaviour: Will patrol a small area, going back and forth until it spots the Knight. As soon as it’s disturbed, it will draw up its shield to any attacks from the front, protecting it from strikes before slowing its shield and striking three times in a row. Once it’s finished striking, it will pull up its shield again and repeat the same sequence. You can kill it quickly is to attack it from the front, and jump over it as it begins its three strike attack to hit it from behind. Downstriking it can also work.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Drops: 45 Geo.
  • Kills for Journal: 10.
  • Behaviour: Will stand in place until the Knight approaches. Once disturbed, it will battle you with two kinds of attacks. The more powerful attack where it jumps into the air, raising its club and smashing it down at you, this deals 2 masks of damage. The second is a shockwave created when it jumps down, sending waves both left and right. The first smashing attack can be difficult to avoid without jumping to a higher platform or having the ability to Dash, while you can simply jump over the shockwaves it creates. It's easier to get a hit or two in after it does this weaker attack.

howling wraiths spell location

False Knight

  • Drops: City Crest.
  • Behaviour part 1: The main boss of Forgotten Crossroads, it will immediately begin its attack as soon as it falls into the boss arena when the doors close. It has three kinds of attacks: the first where it uses its mace, raising it above its head and smashing it down towards the Knight, causing a shockwave in the direction the False Knight is facing. This can easily be avoided by jumping over the wave before it hits you. The second involves it jumping into the air and using the weight of its body to cause damage as well as its mace. It will lock on to where you’re standing and jump into the air, raising its mace above its head and bringing it down with the rest of its body to the spot where you stood before it jumped. Getting hit by its mace or body will deal damage. This is another attack that can be avoided if timed right. Simply run under the False Knight as it jumps so it lands with its back facing you, this will give you the opportunity to get a few hits on it. Its final attack is only triggered after you knock it down and hit the Maggot that falls out. After being dealt enough damage, it’ll return into the armour and will get angry, smashing its mace from side-to-side, causing the whole boss area to shake. This causes rocks to fall from the ceiling that will do damage to the Knight if they hit.
  • Behaviour part 2: To defeat the False Knight, the battle follows a set pattern due to it having separate health for its head and its body, or rather its armour. You need to strike its armour and deal enough damage to cause it to fall down, making the Maggot controlling the body to fall out. When it’s out, you’ll get the chance to deal some serious damage to the head, gaining SOUL as you do this. You do not gain SOUL for hitting the body, so make sure to use your Focus ability wisely. Once the Maggot is dealt enough damage, it will crawl back into the armour and go on a rampage, before returning to its two previous attacks. These attacks will become more intense, with the first shockwave attack now causing rocks to fall from the ceiling. You must knock the False Knight down two more times, after the third time, it will get back up and use its rage attack one more time before falling through the floor. You then jump down after it and finish the Maggot off.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: King’s Pass, Ancestral Mound, Greenpath.
  • Drops: 1 Lifeblood Mask.
  • Behaviour: Lifeseeds emerge from destroyed Lifeblood Cocoons, and will move away from the Knight in an attempt to escape.
  • Locations: Ancestral Mound, Elder Baldur (summoned as help).
  • Behaviour: Once disturbed, it rolls into a ball and launches itself at the Knight. If it doesn’t hit, it will continue to roll and bounces off of walls and other Baldur. After a small amount of time, it will unroll and change to face your direction before rolling towards you again. You can easily jump over it and strike it from the air or from behind to deal with it.

howling wraiths spell location

Elder Baldur

  • Locations: Forgotten Crossroads, Ancestral Mound.
  • Behaviour: Does not move from its spot, attacking only when an enemy is at long range and curls up into its shell when you try to strike at it, becoming safe from any damage. It will either summon Balder to attack for it, or spit venom in your direction that will linger for a short period. Any spawned Balder do not drop Geo, but do provide you with SOUL to use the Vengeful Spirit spell, as this is the only way to kill the Elder Baldur when it’s not curled up.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Hides in the grass until disturbed. Once the Knight comes in range, it will rustle its leaves before rising up and wanders back and forth. It does not try to attack you.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: Greenpath
  • Behaviour: Wanders back and forth until the Knight approaches. As soon as it spots you, it will rush at you, flailing its arms much like the Wandering Husk does. Only they move much faster, and striking them as they approach does not knock them back, so you have to time your jumps more carefully.

howling wraiths spell location

Volatile Mosskin

  • Drops: 5 Geo.
  • Behaviour: Wanders back and forth aimlessly until it’s disturbed. Once it spots the Knight, it will begin to shake its body before causing an explosion of orange gas that causes damage. Move away from the Mosskin as soon as it starts to shake to avoid the orange cloud before rushing in to strike at it as soon as the gas subsides, or attack it from afar with the Vengeful Spirit spell. After it’s killed, its body will cause one last explosion, so make sure to avoid where it lands. If it lands in a body of water, it will not explode.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Drops: 9 Geo.
  • Behaviour: Hides in grass that makes it difficult to see. When the Knight walks on it, it will rustle for a second before snapping up at whatever dares to tread on it, and will stay in that position for a few moments, allowing you to get a few hits on the plant before it hides back in the grass. You can bait the Fool Eater to snap open by walking on it for a second and jumping back before rushing forward to strike. You will often find this carnivorous plant guarding Geo rocks.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Essentially Hollow Knight’s variation of a mosquito. They will hover about in a small area before being disturbed, where they will lunge full force at the Knight. They won’t stop until they hit you or anything else they come into contact with. They can be easily dealt with by baiting it to slam into the ground and then striking it before it can get back in the air.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Flies around aimlessly, bouncing off the surfaces it comes into contact with. It will occasionally spit out four balls of Infection diagonally. You can avoid this attack by standing below it or to the side of it before rushing forward to strike it down.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Emerges when the Knight comes into range and shoots out spiked balls in their direction. You can either dodge or reflect these balls back at the Gulka to deal damage. It will disappear into the wall again if you get too close, making it impossible to hit with the base Nail. You must either increase the Nail’s range with a Charm, or use a long range spell

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Probably one of the most peaceful enemies in the game. They will sit together in a flock before flying away when disturbed by the Knight. It’s impossible to get in range to kill them unless you can Dash forward and strike, or use the Vengeful Spirit spell from afar.

howling wraiths spell location

Moss Charger

  • Drops: 8 Geo.
  • Behaviour: Hides in the bush and grass until the Knight comes into range. It will then jump up from the ground and charge at you before diving back into the greenery when it reaches the end of the platform. When a Moss Charger is struck, the leaves will fall away and will reveal a small bug. It will run away to the end of the platform opposite from the Knight and dive back into the greenery; it will then appear again and charge. Hitting it the first time only knocks its leaves off and doesn’t deal any damage. An easy tactic would be to use your Nail for the first hit and then a long range spell for the second.

howling wraiths spell location

Massive Moss Charger

  • Drops: 120 Geo.
  • Behaviour: First encountered acting as a giant bush until the Knight gets close. It starts rustling before revealing its head and letting out a large roar, and then dives into the greenery on the platform. The Massive Moss Charger is just three Moss Chargers living together, and hitting it won’t cause the three bugs underneath all the foliage to emerge. They attacks with two attacks that are relatively simple, but are not easy to dodge with how big and fast the Massive Moss Charger is. Their first attack is more or less the same as a normal Moss Charger. They’ll launch themselves at you to deal damage before diving down into the ground to ready themselves for another attack. Dodging this attack can be difficult as the enemy is quite tall to jump over; instead this is the perfect opportunity to down strike it once or twice as it passes underneath you. Its second attack involves it leaping into the air and using its large body to slam down onto the Knight. This can be dodged by moving a little towards the Moss Charger as it jumps so it lands with its back facing you. Once it’s defeated, the three small bugs will pop out and burrow into the platform where three normal Moss Chargers can be found. The Massive Moss Charger does not respawn.

howling wraiths spell location

Moss Knight

  • Locations: Greenpath, Lake if Unn.
  • Drops: 40 Geo.
  • Behaviour: Usually found pretending to hide as a pile of leaves, waiting for the Knight to get into its territory, or patrols back and forth in wait for an enemy. Skilled with its Nail and Shell, this enemy has four ways to protect itself and deal damage. When not preoccupied with another attack, it will bring its shell up and block from all sides if you try to attack, even if you strike from above. Its second attack involves it striking with its Nail, swinging one or two times and moving forward each time it swings. You can take advantage of this attack by baiting it, and then jumping over it to get a few strikes at its back while the sequence of its attack plays out. Its third attack is more of a defensive repositioning, leaping back away from your Nail strikes to avoid taking damage. This is often followed up by its fourth, ranged attacked. It will spit out balls of thorns at the Knight, taking the opportunity to strike with its Nail while you try to dodge the thorns. Melee battling with this enemy can be quite tough at the beginning of the game, so using the Vengeful Spirit spell to deal damage would help.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Kills for Journal: 8.
  • Behaviour: Passively paces in the acid pools at the bottom of Greenpath. It does not attack the Knight if they get close, and cannot be harmed from the back or above thanks to its hard shell. Instead it can only be hit from the front.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Hovers back and forth peacefully, and doesn’t try to attack the Knight if they get close. It does not take damage from the back or above thanks to its hard, spikey shell. Much like the Durandoo, it must be hit from the front.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: Fog Canyon.
  • Behaviour: It floats around, not paying attention to anything around it. It only deals damage if the Knight touches it.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Kills for Journal: 12.
  • Behaviour: It continuously floats up and down in the same area. It doesn’t attack the Knight if they get close, but their long body can sometimes make it difficult to manoeuvre past them. If it, its body will explode and the orange ball inside will be freed before homing in on you, exploding if it touches either you or a surface. This explosion will deal 2 masks of damage, so it’s best to avoid Ooma if you’re low on health.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: Fungal Wastes, Fungal Core.
  • Behaviour: Wanders back and forth, paying no attention to the Knight but will deal damage if touched. Unlike the Crawlid, it can be pretty fast, so take it out quickly to avoid getting cornered.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: It floats in place, only moving from its spot when the Knight gets close enough. It will then slowly float towards you, causing damage when touched. Their movements can be easily avoided.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: It floats around until the Knight gets close enough. It doesn’t move towards the Knight to cause physical damage, instead spits out a cloud of infection down directly below it. It can only attack in this direction, so it’s better to attack from above or the sides.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: Hidden in the wall, on ceilings and on floors until disturbed where the mushrooms will emerge and shoot a ball of clustered spores that will explode on impact. It will only shoot out one at a time, but one is more than enough as this explosive will home in on you until it either hits its mark or explodes after a certain amount of time. The explosion has a large hit radius and deals 2 masks of damage if successful. The Sporg will retreat back into the surface it’s attached to if the Knight comes too close, making it impossible to hit. It’s possible to bait it out and attack it before it can retreat, but it’s difficult to do. Attacking with a spell like Vengeful Spirit will help greatly.

Fungified Husk

  • Locations: Fungal Wastes.
  • Behaviour: It wanders back and forth until the Knight comes in range. Very similar to the Volatile Mosskin in the way it attacks; it will shake its body and create a cloud of infected gas that has a larger radius to a Volatile Mosskin. Once it’s been killed, its body will cause one last explosion that is the same size as its Mosskin cousin.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Behaviour: At first it looks like a normal mushroom sprouting from the ground. Once the Knight gets close, it will uproot and flee, causing no damage if touched. Easy farming for SOUL.

howling wraiths spell location

Shrumal Warrior

  • Behaviour: Will stand still until disturbed by the Knight where it will let out a short cry before rolling into a ball to perform one of two attacks. It will either jump into the air and launch itself down at you, or charge directly at you on the ground. Both of these attacks leave a trail of infectious gas.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Drops: 225 Geo.
  • Behaviour part 1: First encountered as the Knight enters Greenpath. She’s then seen several times after, always darting away when you get too close. Eventually, you’ll approach her at the end of the map, as she’s standing by the body of another like you. She’ll claim she knows what the Knight is and says she cannot allow them to go any further, triggering the fight to start. She has four moves she uses to fight. The first is a simple lunge where she rushes forward with her needle out; this attack doesn’t cover the whole boss area, so you can easily avoid it by jumping back enough. Her second attack is similar to the first, but this time she lunges for you from the air. She locks onto your position after jumping before rushing down at you, somewhat similar to one of the False Knight’s attacks. This attack can also be evaded by moving towards Hornet as she strikes down. Her third attack involves her throwing her needle in your direction on a thread before pulling it back. This attack doesn’t quite reach the entire boss arena, so it’s possible to move back enough to be just out of reach. This attack also does damage as the needle returns to Hornet. Her final attack has two variations as she’s able to perform it on the ground and in the air. This time she uses her thread as a weapon, slicing anything that comes close to the area around her as she waves her needle.
  • Behaviour part 2: Unlike the last boss fight, a couple of Hornet’s attacks give you enough time to heal safely without having to worry about the next strike. When she throws her needle or uses her thread to slice everything around her are the moments as they both take time to carry out. Using the Vengeful Spirit spell in this battle will be extremely helpful as well, as it does more damage than the Nail at this point. When she dashes forward to hit you with her needle, jump over her and get a few hits in from the back. This is an easy way to deal damage and gain SOUL if you don’t have enough to use Focus or Vengeful Spirit. Four times throughout the fight, Hornet will fall to her knees to recover. This is another good opportunity to heal, or use the Vengeful Spirit as hitting her will cause her to recover immediately. After being defeated, she’ll flee and you’ll be able to pick up the Mothwing Cloak from the corpse, allowing you to use the Dash ability.

howling wraiths spell location

  • Locations: Wherever the Knight was last killed.
  • Drops: All Geo on most recent death.
  • Behaviour: After dying, a shadow of the Knight appears where they die, or before the room they die in. As you get close the Shade’s location, it will make an odd noise before homing in on you. It will attack by using its Nail and using any spells you have learned before dying. The Shade has no set health as it gets stronger as you make your way through the game.
  • Additional Information: You will have a broken SOUL meter until the Shade is killed, and it won’t be possible to fill it up to full until the meter is fixed. If you kill the Shade, your SOUL meter will return to normal and all of the Geo you lost from your most recent death will be returned to you. However, if you were to die again before killing the first Shade, all Geo lost with that Shade will disappear. Meaning, if you die with 2000 Geo, collect 50 Geo as you make your way back and then die again, the Shade you have to kill will only drop 50 Geo.

Hollow Knight: How to Get Every Spell

Switch up the Knight’s arsenal by using spells during combat. Here’s where players can find every spell available in Hollow Knight.

Quick Links

Vengeful spirit, desolate dive, descending dark, howling wraiths, abyss shriek.

As players progress through Hollow Knight , they will be rewarded with numerous abilities to explore Hallownest to its fullest. However, mobility skills are not the only upgrades that the Knight can find. One of the most valuable resources at players’ disposal is their Soul meter. The Knight will generate Soul by striking enemies or Soul Totems with their nail, and some Charms provide a passive boost to how much Soul they can earn.

Soul has two functions: healing and casting spells. In the heat of battle, players will often need to decide if they need to risk leaving the Knight vulnerable to attack while they take a moment to heal or use their Soul to go on the offensive and cast a spell. Here is where players can find all of the spells in Hollow Knight , as well as their upgraded forms.

RELATED: Hollow Knight: Tips for Beginners

Focus is the first spell that players will discover as they progress through the tutorial along the King’s Pass.

In this area, players will come across a large stone tablet that will glow as the Knight approaches it. By interacting with this tablet, they'll learn how to generate Soul and use it to heal. The Soul meter can be found in the top left corner of the screen and will gradually fill as players hit enemies.

Upon death, players will lose any collected Geo that was on the Knight’s person and a Shade will be left behind at the location of their death. Players will also notice that their Soul meter is broken, limiting how much Soul they can gather. The Soul meter can only be repaired by engaging with the Knight’s Shade and defeating it in combat, which will also restore any lost Geo.

The Vengeful Spirit spell becomes available to players after they defeat the False Knight and gain access to the Ancestral Mound. Here, they will be greeted by a Snail Shaman who will grant the Knight the ability to use a new spell.

Vengeful Spirit is a projectile attack that will launch in a straight, horizontal line from where the player casts it. Not only does the spell deal damage to enemies, but it can also be used to penetrate breakable walls.

The Elder Baldur that players will find at the end of the Ancestral Mound becomes immune to Nail attacks by curling up and using its armored shell to defend when the Knight gets too close. This is where Vengeful Spirit shines, and players can use the same tactic to pass another Elder Baldur that's guarding the road to Greenpath from the Forgotten Crossroads a little later on.

It is possible to circumvent the False Knight battle by breaking the support beams above the locked gate to the far left of the arena. Although the rewards for the fight will be unavailable until the False Knight is defeated, players can go straight to pick up the Vengeful Spirit if they use this skip.

The upgrade to Vengeful Spirit requires players to have collected the Shopkeeper’s Key, which can be found in the Crystal Peak. To the left of the room where the Crystal Knight is first encountered, with the central bench in Crystal Peak, the Shopkeeper’s Key is nestled away in a corner. Upon inspecting the key, players will notice that it resembles a familiar face.

With the key now in hand, players should travel back to Dirtmouth and return the Shopkeeper’s Key to Sly, who will then be able to expand his stock. Amongst Charms, simple keys , and other items, Sly will now also sell an Elegant Key for 800 Geo. When the player buys this key, they will then need to travel to the Soul Sanctum in the City of Tears.

Players may have come across a large locked door further up the path from the shortcut between the bench where Cornifer is first found and the Soul Sanctum. This is the door that the Elegant Key will open, but players will need to prepare for a mini-boss fight against a Soul Warrior. After defeating the mini-boss, players can interact with a device where they can obtain the Shade Soul.

The Soul Master is the boss in the Soul Sanctum sub-area of the City of Tears. One of their attacks is a slam, where they target the Knight and slam directly down into the ground before teleporting away again. This is the Soul Master’s version of the Desolate Dive spell that players obtain after defeating them.

This spell is useful both in and out of combat. During a battle, players can take advantage of invincibility frames (or I-frames) to chain attacks after they slam down onto enemies, but the timing of this can be finicky and may require some practice to get right.

Players may have also found areas throughout Hallownest where the ground shakes as they walk across it, which can now be broken through by using the Desolate Dive spell. Players will have an opportunity to test this out as they leave the Soul Sanctum after the boss fight, where they can smash through brittle glass-like flooring.

Descending Dark works largely the same as its previous iteration, only now it has a much wider range and deals more damage against enemies.

This spell is found in the Crystallised Mound, a sub-area in the Crystal Peak. To obtain this upgrade, players will first need to have collected the Crystal Heart so they can use the Crystal Dash ability , otherwise, they will not be able to access the area.

Inside the Crystallised Mound, players will be dropped into an area that can only be left by either completing the platforming challenge or dying. For this reason, it is recommended to have unlocked the Monarch Wings to make the jumps easier. After progressing through, players will find another Snail Shaman that is encased in crystal and will grant them Descending Dark after the crystal is broken open.

Howling Wraiths releases a burst of energy above the Knight in an arc, simultaneously dealing 3 hits at a time. The spell is especially useful for attacking enemies that are flying or jumping over the player to get in damage as they pass rather than chasing them down.

Located in the sub-area of the Fog Canyon, players must travel to the Overgrown Mound to the west to obtain the Howling Wraiths spell. They will be ambushed by Squits and must defeat them to open the gate to the top right of this chamber and continue down the path.

Players will soon discover the body of another larger Snail Shaman, with the Howling Wraiths floating just in front of them.

If the player is able to hit an enemy with all four bursts of the spell, alongside equipping the Knight with damage boosting charms, Abyss Shriek is arguably the most powerful attack at players’ disposal.

To add this upgraded spell to their arsenal, players must travel to the Abyss. This is a sub-area of the Ancient Basin and can only be accessed if the player has already collected the King’s Brand .

At the very bottom of the main chamber of the Abyss, players should travel to the left and through a passage that has a few Shadow Creepers scuttling around in it and opens up into another room. If players Dream Nail the pedestal in the center of the room, they will receive a clue on what to do here. To use the Knight’s “voice,” players must use the Howling Wraiths spell while standing on the pedestal to unlock Abyss Shriek.

Hollow Knight is available on PC, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Hollow Knight Spells Locations Guide – How To Unlock, Tips

With the help of our Hollow Knight Spells Locations Guide, you'll be able to learn all about finding all the different spells in the game.

Hollow Knight Spells Locations Guide

Spells and Abilities are not that different in how they are unlocked but the primary purpose of the Spells is to deal damage. In order to learn how to use all of the Spells that are found in the game, you will need this Hollow Knight Spells Locations Guide .

Our Hollow Knight Spells Locations Guide will tell you all about how the Spells in the game are unlocked and how you can use them for your benefit.

Hollow Knight Spells Soul Interaction

The soul is the main ingredient for using your Abilities. Soul pretty much acts as fuel for your Spells and you can use the Soul Vessels that you will find in the game to store additional amounts of Soul. The Soul Meter can be used either to heal yourself or to deal damage to your enemies.

Let us go ahead and take a look at all of the Spells that are in the game. We will tell you what is the advantage of using a Spell and then tell you how is it that you can unlock it. Here are all of the Spells in Hollow Knight .

Focus is the primary spell that you have. It is unlocked for you by default. Focus is used to repair your shell and heal the damage that you have taken.

Vengeful Spirit

This spell basically makes a spirit which flies forward and burns all of the enemies in its wake. You can unlock it by talking to the Snal Shaman at the Ancestral Mound in Forgotten Crossroads.

Desolate Dive

This spell strikes the ground with a lot of force. Of course, it also uses a fair bit of soul and it destroys the fragile structures that are nearby. You can get this spell by defeating the Soul Master in the City of Tears.

Howling Wraiths

This spell is quite simple. It blasts your enemies with screaming Soul. Unlock it right beside the entrance of Queen’s Gardens in the Overgrown Mound in Fog Canyon.

This ability makes a shadow that flies and burns enemies, quite similar to Vengeful Spirit. In order to get it, purchase the Elegant Key from the Sly in Dirtmouth and then unlock the door at Soul Sanctum in the City of Tears.

Descending Dark

This spell strikes the ground and destroys foes as well as destroying all the fragile structures nearby. Get it from the corpse of the Snail Shaman at Crystal peek in Crystallised Mound.

Abyss Shriek

Abyss Shriek blasts enemies with screaming Soul and Shadows. This is unlocked when you use Howling Wraith on the pedestal found towards the bottom left of The Abyss.

How to get all Spells in Hollow Knight

How to get all Spells in Hollow Knight

If charms play essential roles in boss fights, then spells and abilities are inevitable if you want to reach every corner of the Hallownest. These are also the “abilities” to open the “gates” in Hollow Knight, the mechanism you could find in every Metroidvania game. In this guide, we break down all the information you need to know about how to get spells in Hollow Knight, including the locations, upgrade forms, and functions of each (except for Focus, which is given to you right from the beginning). Let’s get started!

How to get all Spells in Hollow Knight:

Vengeful spirit, desolate dive, descending dark, howling wraiths, abyss shriek.

All you have to do is press FOCUS/CAST or QUICK CAST to launch a soul stream in the direction the Knight is facing and deal 15 damages to penetrated enemies. Technically speaking, this is an AOE skill that could be useful when you want to wipe out a whole cluster of creeps at once. This spell will be given to the Knight by Snail Shaman without any challenge.

Shade Soul

Shade Soul is the upgrade to Vengeful Spirit, and each cast of Soul Shade now will deal 30 damage to the penetrated enemies. To acquire this spell, you have to open a locked door in Soul Sanctum of the City of Tears with the Elegant Key from Sly in Dirtmouth and defeat a Soul Warrior guarding the room. However, you need the Monarch Wings in advance to reach that location. You can find how to acquire the Monarch Wings in our guide on how to get all abilities in Hollow Knight.

To perform this spell, you have to press FOCUS/CAST or QUICK CAST  while holding DOWN  to make the Knight strike down the ground dealing 15 damages and generate a spread shockwave dealing 20. Also, performing this spell will make the Knight immune to every damage for 0.4 seconds. And on top of that, using this spell is the only way for you to destroy shaky grounds, which unlock many hidden areas of Hollow Knight. So, try to obtain this spell as soon as possible.

Desolate Dive will be rewarded to players after defeating Soul Master in the City of Tears. Personally, this is a tough boss to beat because there are two different phases with two entirely different skill sets. I suggest not trying to attack or chase the Soul Master but reading his attacks and dodging instead. Pogo-jumping is a helpful technique in this boss fight, and also you will have plenty of time to heal amid the battle when Soul Master deflates and suspends still after taking a certain amount of damage.

Same as the Shade Soul, this upgrade version of Desolate Dive merely deals a little more damages than the original. The shockwave now bursts twice, dealing 30 and 15 damages, respectively.

You have to reach Crystallised Mound in Crystal Peak rescue a snail shaman trapped in crystal in a room located on the right of it. All you have to do is break the crystal and free the snail shaman. You may need Monarch Wings or Mothwing Cloak to reach that place.

Instead of holding DOWN to cast the Desolate Dive, now you have to FOCUS/CAST or QUICK CAST  while holding up,  and the Knight will release a Soul Explosion above him, dealing three bursts at a maximum of 30 total damage. This spell could cover a much more expansive space than other Spells, which is very useful for handling those irritating flying enemies such as Primal Aspid or Winged Fool.

Howling Wraiths is located in the Overgrown Mound of Fog Canyon. You have to wipe out a swarm of Squit to get the Howling Wraiths.

Abyss Shriek is the upgrade to Howling Wraths. Now, each time you cast this spell, you will be able to deal four hits with a maximum of 90 damage. However, you can acquire this spell without any effort. You just need to cast the Howling Wraths in the room at the bottom left of the Abyss, and Abyss Shriek will be yours.

Now you know how to get all the spells in Hollow Knight , so it’s time to move on to the abilities !

How to Obtain the Howling Wraiths Spell

howling wraiths spell location

Team Cherry’s Metroidvania action-adventure game, Hollow Knight , follows the journey of a nameless warrior called the Knight as he travels through Hallownest, which is now a kingdom in ruins because of a supernatural disease. As the Knight journeys through Hallownest, he can unlock new abilities, spells, and charms that will help him traverse through different areas of Hallownest and defeat enemies.

One of the useful spells in the game is the Howling Wraiths spell . This spell allows the Knight to release a blast of Soul above and around the Knight. With the Howling Wraiths spell, the Knight will have a new way of defeating enemies in Hallownest, and in this guide, you will learn how to obtain the Howling Wraiths spell!

howling wraiths spell location

The Howling Wraiths spell can be found in the easternmost part of the room inside the Overgrown Mound, on the western side of the Fog Canyon .

In the Fog Canyon , the Knight will encounter different kinds of enemies like Uomas, Oomas, and Charged Lumaflies . Additionally, in the Overgrown Mound , the Knight will encounter a lot of Squits and some Mossflies .

So the Knight will be able to traverse Fog Canyon easier, it is recommended that the Knight should have the Monarch Wings ability, which allows the Knight to perform a double jump in mid-air, and the Mantis Claw ability, which enables the Knight to cling to walls and jump off of them, and the Isma’s Tear ability, which allows the Knight to swim in pools of acid without taking any damage.

Be careful when attacking Oomas, as it will pop its shell, and its orange core will come in on the Knight and explode.
  • Next, head to the left, head up the next shaft, continue to the left, drop down on the following path, and there you will find the entrance to the Overgrown Mound and a couple of Mossflies. Enter the Overgrown Mound to continue. Another thing worth noting is that the Knight can destroy the wooden bracing on the right to create a shortcut to the entrance of the Overgrown Mound.
  • After that, head to the right, where you will encounter two Squits then; the Knight will eventually reach a large part of the room with a bunch of small platforms in the middle and spikes at the bottom.
Jump towards the spirit, and the Knight will obtain the Howling Wraiths spell !

howling wraiths spell location

As mentioned above, the Howling Wraiths spell allows the Knight to release a blast of Soul above and around the Knight. Just press the assigned FOCUS or CAST button to perform it while holding the UP movement button.

Spells are skills the Knight can activate by either holding FOCUS/CAST ( Focus ) or tapping FOCUS/CAST or QUICK CAST while neutral ( Vengeful Spirit / Shade Soul ) or while holding UP ( Howling Wraiths / Abyss Shriek ) or DOWN ( Desolate Dive / Descending Dark ).

All spells use 33 SOUL . The Spell Twister Charm lowers the cost to 24 for all Spells, except Focus.

Abilities are skills the Knight can find throughout the game that make traversing Hallownest easier.

Nail Arts are abilities using the Nail, taught to the Knight by the Nailmasters . Executing a Nail Art involves holding down ATTACK to charge, then releasing while doing an optional second input depending on the Nail Art.

Hornet is captured by outsider bugs and brought to their kingdom, Pharloom, but she escapes her cage before arriving at their destination. She then must battle foes and solve mysteries to ascend on a deadly pilgrimage to this kingdom's peak.

Health is represented as Masks, shown in the upper-left corner of the screen. Hornet starts the game with 5 Masks and can obtain more. Health is lost by taking damage, either from enemies or from environmental hazards. Health can be regained by the use of the Bind ability consuming a full Silk spool.

Lifeblood Masks, granted by Lifeblood needles, are temporary masks.

Silk is represented as a spool below the health indicator. Thread is consumed when using special abilities, including a form of Focus named Bind. Striking enemies with the Needle fills the spool by two laces. When the spool is full, the symbol representing the side of the spool left to the health indicator is filled.

The Needle is Hornet's main weapon. Not only can she use it to slash or block attacks against enemies, but also to dash forward, stab, and bounce up above them. She can also use it alongside her abilities to deal greater damage or as a grappling hook.

Tools are special items classed by categories, equipped on a Crest with limited slots. They can be used as throwing weapons or defensive aids without costing Silk. Crests and Tools can be changed when sitting on a Bench similar to Charms.

Abilities consume Silk thread to use them.

Hornet can collect and keep various items throughout her journey, which are stored in her inventory. They can be related to specific quests.

The following areas have no confirmed name, although the names used were mentioned in the official announcement. Other mentioned names include "Bonebottom", "Moss Temple", and "Soaring Warlord's Tower": "Coral Forest", "Gilded City", and "Lake of Fire/Bone Forest".

Garmond and Zaza are two NPCs first revealed in the Hollow Knight: Silksong announcement trailer. They are on a quest to find a new home. Garmond appears to be the rider, while Zaza appears to be mount.

Garmond and Zaza only appear once in the announcement trailer; they are seen during the "New Quests" segment. Within a dark, murky hallway with a visible curved lattice pattern in the background, Hornet is shown leaping over the two as they charge forward through a small group of enemies, while Garmond makes a loud vocalization.

They were later revealed in a blog post, which states that the two are on a quest to find a new home. Garmond is described as being rambunctious and chatty, while Zaza is noted to possibly be "the brains" of the two.

Elder Hu was a travelling sage who sought to purify the borderlands of Hallownest from the Infection. He reached the Mantis Village, but his own Infected mind made him see the Mantis Lords and the Tribe as afflicted by the plague. The Mantises killed him after he attacked them. A memorial was erected in his name above the gates to the City of Tears, his tunic and bead necklace resting on top of it.

The spirit of Elder Hu can be fought at his memorial after acquiring the Dream Nail. Still deluded in his experience with the Mantis Tribe, he warns the Knight. After his defeat, the spirit becomes aware of his madness-driven mistake. He realizes his own death before shattering into 100 Essence to be collected by the Dream Nail.

Elder Hu has two attacks in addition to being able to teleport:

Ring Slam: Elder Hu summons a row of rings in midair, interspersed with several safe gaps, before quickly slamming them all down onto the ground simultaneously.

Ring Curtain: Elder Hu summons pairs of rings that slam down on the ground, beginning from the edges of the arena and moving towards the centre.

Teleport: Elder Hu warps from one area to another to avoid attacks or set up his own.

The ring attacks require very precise movements to dodge as they come out quickly. The Shade Cloak is highly recommended, although not completely necessary. Elder Hu remains in place during the attacks, and his floating pattern is low enough to the ground, where attacking with the Nail is possible. Dodge the rings and get in some hits in between. Eventually, the rhythm of the attacks is easy to follow and the Knight should have no problem timing dashes and attacks.

Cyclone Slash

  • Collecting Vengeful Spirit, Desolate Dive, or Howling Wraiths fully refills the SOUL meter.

Found along the path leading to Greenpath. He is held in the mandibles of a Vengefly King, and the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him. If saved, he complains that the Knight got in the way between him and his "prey", he introduces himself and boasts about his supposed mighty deeds.

If he is not saved before acquiring the Mantis Claw, he dies in this location, with his nail and shell remaining. Hitting his shell here grants the Neglect achievement.

If he is saved in Greenpath, Zote shows up in Dirtmouth, where he once again talks to the Knight in an arrogant fashion.

Zote can be found in a corridor leading back to the storerooms of the City of Tears. He has forgotten the Knight and introduces himself again.

Found stuck in spider webs, presumably having been captured by the beasts of Deepnest. Once again the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him, though this time leaving him does not result in his death. If saved, he once again complains about the Knight meddling in his supposed heroics.

The Five Great Knights of Hallownest once stood beneath the throne as the kingdom's protectors. They are revered figures who are often mentioned in historical records but only as a group. Information on the individual Great Knights is sparse, with Relic Seeker Lemm noting that their names and appearance seem to have been erased from history.

The Five Great Knights are:

  • Ze'mer ( Grey Mourner )
  • Ogrim ( Dung Defender )

By the time the Knight returns to Hallownest, three of the Great Knights have either died or disappeared. Only Ogrim and Ze'mer are known to be alive.

The Great Knights are depicted in Ogrim's cave below his boss arena as statues made of dung:

Five Great Knights Dung Statues

Located in the Resting Grounds where she is known as the " Grey Mourner ", Ze'mer is the only remaining Great Knight besides Ogrim. Sheo refers to her as "mysterious Ze'mer". She is not native to Hallownest, originating from "lands serene", a location from which she also brought Delicate Flowers . There is not much known about Ze'mer when she was a Great Knight, but Ogrim remarks on how she told stories.

After her Mantis lover died, Ze'mer turned to mourning and retreated to her house in the Resting Grounds. She dissipates after the Knight delivers the Delicate Flower to the grave of her lover.

Dryya had a hard front, and Nailmaster Sheo refers to her as "Fierce Dryya", although she is noted to have been a caring type. Ogrim mentions that he misses her wisdom. She was tasked with standing guard over the White Lady in the Queen's Gardens .

After defeating numerous Mantis Traitors , evidenced by the pile of their corpses aside Dryya's own, they eventually overwhelmed her. The White Lady is not aware of Dryya's death.

Dream Nail Dialogue

Isma

Referred to as "kindly Isma" by Nailmaster Sheo, there is little known about Isma, but her strength seemed to surpass that of Ogrim's, and her nature seemed to be kind and understanding. Ogrim and Isma had a very close relationship, even more so since he seems to be protecting her grove specifically. Isma’s powers and capabilities are not specifically stated but seem to have some relation to acid, as her tear or "blessing" grants acid immunity. Her grove is referred to as the "source of acid blight."

She can be found within the Royal Waterways , in Isma’s Grove. She appears to be dead and her body can be seen attached to a wall by plant growth; making the cause of her death the most questionable.

  • ...Ogrim... there's no time...

False Knight Statue

Hegemol is the only Great Knight whose whereabouts are largely unknown. He was the favourite Great Knight of Nailmaster Sheo, who calls him "Mighty Hegemol". He was a towering figure but soft spoken, which was surprising for somebody of his stature. Ogrim mentions that he misses Hegemol's humour.

A statue of Hegemol can be found outside the City of Tears , requiring the City Crest to open the gate to the city.

While Hegemol was sleeping, his armoured shell was stolen by a Maggot who wanted to defend his siblings. It is unknown whether Hegemol is alive after this or if he was murdered by the maggot. While the False Knight who stole his shell wields a mace with an armoured bug attached to the end, Hegemol himself is always shown without any weapon.

Dung-Defender-2

The most loyal of the Five Great Knights, Ogrim is found in the Royal Waterways where he is known as " Dung Defender ". He hopes to meet the other Great Knights again and see Hallownest be reborn. Although he misses Isma in particular, he is not able to visit her grove due to his duties and an oath that he swore. Due to this, he seems to be unaware of Isma's fate and the fate of the other Great Knights.

  • The large dead Husk Dandy holding the Love Key can be Dream Nailed , providing the dialogue:

  • A fight with Dryya was planned early in development but was later cut . A Kickstarter update described her as:
  • Ogrim was revealed as a boss in a Kickstarter update with a different backstory:
  • In early development, Herrah the Beast was named Hegemol. This was later changed to her current name.
