Into Thin Air

Accident case study.

It’s early evening on July 3, 2021, when two pilots in a newly purchased Beechcraft Bonanza G36 depart Aspen, Colorado, for their home base on the East Coast. They plan to cross the Sawatch mountain range—with peaks topping 14,000 feet—after an initial climb out of Aspen.

Join the AOPA Air Safety Institute as we follow the Bonanza’s likely encounter with high density altitude—an inherent hazard in high terrain significantly degrading aircraft performance. Deceptively upsloping terrain would leave no escape for the flatland pilots facing the canyon trapping them.

A Case Study in Physiology

Into Thin Air

As an exhausted climbing expedition ascends a steep cliff, one climber in particular experiences severe difficulty breathing and quickly becomes the focus of this case study in which students are asked to assess the physiological changes that occur at high altitudes. The case is designed for upper division physiology students, most of who are interested in pursuing a career in the health sciences. Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of physiology of the respiratory system and some idea of how homeostatic mechanisms operate in a normal human.

  • Explain the physiological changes (respiratory, cardiovascular, and otherwise) that humans encounter at high altitudes.
  • Understand the pathophysiology of pulmonary edema.
  • Evaluate physiological data in a “clinical” setting to make a diagnosis.

Into Thin Air

Into Thin Air is Jon Krakauer 's third novel, adapted from an article he published in Outside magazine following the tragic events of May 1996 on the slopes of Mt. Everest. At the time of its publication in 1997, Into Thin Air garnered widespread attention as the story of the deadliest climbing season in the history of Mt. Everest. It became a bestseller, reaching #1 on the New York Times nonfiction list, and it was a finalist for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in General Non-Fiction. It has since been adapted into the TV movie Into Thin Air: Death on Everest (1997) and the feature film Everest (2015).

The book is not without controversy, however. Later in 1997, Anatoli Boukreev published The Climb , which gives an alternative account of events more critical of the Adventure Consultants team. This was in response to what Boukreev--senior guide for the Mountain Madness team--perceived to be an unfairly critical depiction of his actions in Krakauer's narrative.
