Republic Day 2024 Speech in English: 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

The annual celebration of Republic Day, which falls on January 26th, is a major celebration in India. It marks the day when our nation adopted its Constitution, a significant milestone in our history.

The journey towards the adoption of the Constitution began soon after India gained independence on August 15, 1947. A committee was established, and on August 29, 1947, a Constituent Assembly was convened with the task of writing a new Constitution for the country. B.R. Ambedkar was appointed as the leader of this group, and over the course of two years, 11 months, and 18 days, the Constitution was drafted.

On January 26, 1950, the Constitution was officially proclaimed. This day holds a special significance as it is also the day when the proclamation of Poorna Swaraj was made in 1930 and Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the leader of the Indian National Congress.

While Independence Day is celebrated on August 15, the Indian National Congress had already celebrated it on the same day in 1930, before India officially gained independence in 1947. Therefore, August 15th is observed as Independence Day, and January 26th is celebrated as Republic Day.

During Republic Day celebrations, patriotism and love for our nation are at the forefront. The main celebration takes place in the capital, New Delhi, with a grand parade and the President of India hoisting the national flag and giving a speech. People across the country participate in cultural programs and patriotic events to celebrate this day.

As we celebrate the 73rd Republic Day of our great nation, let us remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, the contributions of the Constitution-makers, and pledge to uphold the values and principles of our Constitution.

Republic Day, celebrated annually on January 26th, is a day of great national pride and celebration in India. It marks the day when our nation officially adopted a democratic republic government and declared its independence. On January 26, 1950, India became an independent, secular, socialist, and democratic republic, almost three years after gaining independence from British rule.

The origins of Republic Day can be traced back to August 15, 1947, when India gained independence from British rule. However, at that time, the nation did not have a formal constitution in place to govern the country properly. To address this, a constitutional drafting committee was established on August 28, 1947, with B.R. Ambedkar as its head. The committee, after 166 days of extensive deliberation, presented its final proposal to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947.

One of the main objectives of the drafting committee was to ensure universal protections for all citizens, regardless of their faith, culture, caste, sex, or creed. The Constitution, which was finally adopted on January 26th, 1950, struck a delicate balance between the various interests and aspirations of the people.

On this day, Rajendra Prasad was inaugurated as India's first President, and the first session of the Indian Parliament was held. Republic Day not only marks the end of British rule but also the establishment of the Indian Republic.

Celebrations

The celebrations on Republic Day are a true reflection of the unity and diversity of our nation. The main event takes place in the capital city of New Delhi, with a grand parade showcasing the military might of the country and the richness of our cultural heritage. The President of India hoists the national flag, and the military responds with a 21-gun salute and a performance of the national anthem.

Many schools across the country also participate in these celebrations by organizing marches and cultural programs, which serve as a source of inspiration and pride for the citizens. It's a day when people put aside their differences and come together to celebrate the spirit of unity and nationalism. The participation of both young and adults in these celebrations, from the colourful parades to the patriotic performances, is truly inspiring and makes one feel proud to be a citizen of this great nation. On this Republic Day, let us pledge to uphold the values and principles of our Constitution, and work towards building a stronger and more inclusive nation for all.

As a student of this nation, there are several ways to uphold the values and principles of Republic Day:

Happy Republic Day Speech 2024

Good morning to everyone who is present over here on the prosperous occasion of 26 January Republic Day. A Happy Republic Day is celebrated every year on the 26th of January. This year India will celebrate its 75th Republic Day 2024 .

Why do we celebrate Republic Day? India Republic day is celebrated to remember the historic moment when our nation became an independent republic country. As we all know that India got its independence on 15th August 1947 and the country didn’t have its own constitution, instead India was governed by the laws implemented by the British. However after many deliberations and amendments, a committee headed by Dr. B.R Ambedkar submitted a draft of the Indian constitution, which was adopted on 26th November 1949 and officially came into effect on 26 January 1950.

On the same day, Dr Rajendra Prasad also began his term as the first President of India. And the Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India under provisions of the new Constitution.

Ever since Independence, the main celebration of Happy Republic Day has been held at the national capital, New Delhi at the Rajpath in the presence of the President, Prime minister, and other high-ranking officials of India.

As a tribute to India, on Republic Day ceremonial parades take place at the Rajpath. The celebration begins from the gates of Rashtrapati Bhavan followed by Raisina hill on the Rajpath past the Indian gate is the main attraction on Happy Republic Day. After the ceremonial parade, there is a presence of various dignitaries like the President, Prime minister, and other higher government officials at the Rajpath.

Every year as a part of celebrations, India has been hosting guests of honour, that could be the head of the state or government of other countries, for the 26 January Republic Day celebration at the capital. This has been the case since 1950, for example on 26 January 2021, the former president of the united states of America Barack Obama was the guest of honour on 26 January Republic Day. Sadly due to the COVID outbreak, there wasn’t any guest of honour for the 72nd Republic Day celebration. In 2024, India will be honored to host France's President Emmanuel Macron as the chief guest for a Happy  Republic Day celebrations, fostering diplomatic ties and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The flag hoisting ceremony at the Rajpath in the national capital takes place mostly at 8:00 AM, which is followed by a Republic day speech by the President and a Republic Day parade.

26 January Republic Day March is considered to be an eye-catching element of the festival and it showcases Indian cultural and social heritage. It also showcases the Indian Defence Capability. Nine to twelve different regiments of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, accompanied by their bands, march in all their official decorations. The President of India, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute.

On this prestigious occasion the heroes of our country, the soldiers are not forgotten. Prestigious awards will be given away to the martyrs and the heroes who have dedicated their lives to protect the country at any cost.

India Republic day is celebrated in every school, college, and office with great enthusiasm and energy. In schools, various competitions are held which include dancing, singing, and giving a Happy Republic Day speech.

But beyond it all, the constitution declares that India is a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. It assures its citizens’ justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity. It also gives us our rights and duties as citizens. On this Happy Republic Day 2024, I hope that no matter who we are, rich or poor, a powerful politician or a regular citizen, we continue to respect these basic principles and values given to us by our amazing constitution. So that, as we move forward and continue to build this nation, we do not leave behind the foundation on which our country is built.

I want to end this speech by saying that India is a democratic country. The citizens living in a democratic country enjoy the privilege to elect their leader to lead the country.

Although we have seen a lot of economic improvements and success as a country, we still have many hurdles in our paths, such as poverty, unemployment, and pollution. It is our duty as citizens to face these challenges and come out stronger on the other side.

Now we know why do we celebrate Republic Day. So one thing we all can do today is to promise each other that we will become a better version of ourselves so that we could contribute to solving all these problems and making our nation a better place. Thank you, Happy Republic Day and Jai Hind.

Since the beginning of modern times, India has always been a free nation – in spirit, values, and identity, though we may have been momentarily enslaved by foreign powers. India’s constitution was adopted in 1950, but it was not until a year later when India officially declared itself a republic.

On this day, we remember and honor our first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Indeed, one of the greatest gifts given to us by our founders was the Indian Constitution, and we as citizens have the responsibility to uphold its promises and exercise our rights to a democratic society. Let’s all be forever reminded of the history and sacrifices made by our leaders and freedom fighters, as we work to create a prosperous, progressive and equitable India. Bharat Mata Ki Jai

Long speech on Republic Day (500 words, 5 Minute speech)

Good morning everyone. It is really a moment of honor for me to address you all today on this great celebration day of India. Today, all the citizens of the nation celebrate their commitment to the vital and positive values of our nation’s democracy.

India, an ancient civilization and a modern state, has been the seat of culture for centuries. India is renowned for its rich heritage, diverse population and vibrant culture, and it is these very traits that symbolize national identity and unify us as one nation.

As we are celebrating India’s 74th republic day, let us pay our tribute to some of most important figures in the struggle for inclusive democracy in India. Mahatma Gandhi, practitioner of non-violent civil disobedience was the pioneers of social justice and self-governance. Jawaharlal Nehru, famously referred to as the “Architect of modern India” was the nation’s first Prime Minister, who worked to build a strong and secular India. He was a leader who recognized the importance of empowering the people, and was committed to the values of equality, freedom and liberty.

The Republican Constitution of India was passed on 26th January 1950, three years after India gained independence from British colonial rule on 15th August 1947. On that day, India became a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. The spirit of democracy that was instilled in Indians was facilitated by political leaders like Bhimrao Ambedkar and Maulana Abulkalam Azad who, despite immense personal and social obstacles, took brave steps to further their cause of a democratic India.

The Constitution of India established fundamental rights to all citizens and outlined them. This includes the right to equality and freedom of religion, speech, press and assembly by forming associations and cooperatives. The Indian Constitution also provides a framework for the election of representatives into the legislature and institutes a federal constitutional republic.

As we move forward, we must take the values and ideals propagated by the Indian Constitution and the leaders behind it and continue our fight for the cause of justice and equality. Republic Day is an important day and allows us to pause and reflect on the state of our nation. It serves to remind us of the challenges and struggles that India has faced and allows us to appreciate the progress we have achieved and the potential for further progress.

It also gives us a window into the power of democracy and the importance of safeguarding our freedom. This day is a call to action for each of us to take responsibility for the future of India. To the students present here today, I urge you to strive to make India the place it must be, a place where no Indian is judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character and the content of their actions. Let us keep the Republic Day spirit alive by working together to create a safe, inclusive, and democratic India. Now, I would like to end my speech. Thank you everyone and have a good day. Jai Hind.

Republic Day Short Speech Sample

Greetings to everyone in attendance on this auspicious day. We are all gathered here to commemorate our nation's 72nd Republic Day today. It is my duty and honor to speak on republic day. Every year on January 26, India celebrates Republic Day, which is special in Indian history. Every year, we celebrate the national event with great joy, happiness, and pride in order to make it memorable.

As we all know, the Indian constitution took effect on January 26, 1950, and ever since, the Indian people have celebrated that day as our nation's Republic Day. Although India gained independence on August 15, 1947, there was no national constitution at the time. But after much deliberation and thought, a committee led by Dr BR Ambedkar presented a draught of the Indian constitution, which was adopted on November 26, 1949, and took effect on January 26, 1950.

I just want to share a few interesting facts about the Indian constitution quickly. Do you know that the Indian Constitution, which has 444 articles divided into 22 parts, 12 schedules, 118 amendments, and 146,385 words in its English-language version, is the longest written constitution of any sovereign state in the world? The Assembly received a draught constitution from the committee in November 1947, but it took more than two months to receive the finishing touches amid discussions and amendments. The process was finally finished on November 26, 1949, when the Constitution was approved by the Constituent Assembly. Prem Behari Narain Raizda was the calligrapher who created the work in the book. It was published by Dehra Dun, photolithographed at the Survey of India Offices, and illuminated by Nandalal Bose and other artists. It is still kept in helium-filled cases in the parliament building's library. Additionally, the Indian Constitution declares nine fundamental rights to be everyone's fundamental human rights.

Respected Principal, Teachers, and all my dear friends.

I'm here in front of you right now to speak on Republic Day. I'd like to wish everyone in attendance a happy republic day before continuing. When my class teacher informed me a few days ago that you have been chosen to give a speech on January 26th, I was absolutely astonished. I have never given a speech before in my school career, so I am both excited and a little nervous.

As you are all aware, we are gathered here today to celebrate Republic Day, also known as "Gantantra Divas," and as you are also aware, our complete constitution was ratified on this day in 1950. However, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who is well-known as the father of the Indian Constitution and one of the most influential figures in modern India at the time, presided over its adoption on November 26, 1949.

It should go without saying that our country's transformation into a republic nation was made possible by the efforts of all of our leaders at the time. The happiness of celebrating this day is completely incomprehensible. I feel incredibly proud to talk about our leaders, whose unwavering efforts laid the groundwork for our Republic Country. the individuals who fought against all odds to enact our nation's own constitution. The celebration of today serves as a reminder that we appreciate their work and will never forget it. On this special day, I also want to honor the courageous soldiers who have over the years defended our Republic Country against various threats.

As we start the celebration of this day, our hearts are overflowing with patriotism and pure love for our country. I just hope that in the years to come, this love for our country will only grow. We all continue to make contributions to our country's improvement and work together to address all of its issues. I just want to say that I am incredibly proud to be a citizen of our nation to wrap up my speech. I hope that everyone in our country continues to abide by the rules set forth in our constitution and preserves the integrity of this republican nation. Thank you!

Republic Day Long Speech Sample

Good Morning, on the auspicious occasion of Indian Republic Day, we have gathered here. India is commemorating its 74th Republic Day this year. I feel a great sense of pride and gratitude for everything our country has accomplished as we come together to celebrate the Republic Day of our country. On this day, we honour the struggles and sacrifices made by the people who fought for our country's independence and sovereignty.

The Indian Constitution, which took effect on this day in 1950, is evidence of the democratic, justice, libertarian, and egalitarian principles that have governed our country since its inception. It provides a framework for the government's transparent and accountable operation and ensures that certain fundamental rights are guaranteed to all of its citizens.

India has been hosting special guests every year as part of celebrations, including the head of state or the governments of other nations for the republic day celebration in the nation's capital. Since 1950, this has been a tradition for the celebration. For instance, on January 26, 2015, former US President Barack Obama attended Republic Day as a special guest. And for the 74th Republic Day celebration, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will be the special guest.

The President delivers a speech on Republic Day at 8 a.m., and then the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Rajpath in the nation's capital is followed by a parade. The Republic Day March is regarded as a striking feature of the celebration and it highlights Indian cultural and social heritage. Additionally, it displays India's defence capabilities. The Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force's nine to twelve different regiments march while wearing all of their official regalia. The salute is accepted by the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, the President of India.

The heroes of our nation, the soldiers, are remembered on this prestigious occasion. Different Gallantry awards and recognitions are presented to the  Martyrs and heroes who dedicated their lives to protecting the motherland.

Happy Sunshine to all the dignitaries, chief guests,s and my dear fellow mates! Every year on January 26, India celebrates Republic Day with great fervor and pride. It marks the anniversary of the adoption of our constitution. We became a sovereign, secular, socialist, and democratic republic on January 26, 1950, nearly three years after gaining our independence.

On August 15, 1947, we declared our independence from British rule, but our nation was still without a written constitution. In addition, India lacked the specialists and political influence necessary to ensure the efficient operation of state affairs. Up until that point, the 1935 Government of India Act, which was more inclined toward colonial rule, had essentially been modified in order to govern. As a result, it was imperative to create a comprehensive constitution that would represent everything India stands for.

Additionally, this day also saw the start of the Indian Parliament's first session. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India's first President, also took the oath of office on January 26. Because it signifies the end of British rule and the establishment of India as a Republic State, this day is crucial.

Every year on January 26, Indians celebrate with great fervour. Irrespective of sex, caste, religion, and other things whole nation comes together to celebrate this joyous day. It exemplifies how diverse our nation is in real life. India's capital city, New Delhi, observes the holiday with a Republic Day Parade that displays both the military might and cultural diversity of our nation.

These parades are held in numerous cities, and many schools participate in them. It is enjoyable to see the youngsters and experts work so hard. One can be proud of their country when one graces the parade. On this day, we hoist the national flag. The national anthem is played by the military band in New Delhi following a 21-gun salute after the President of India hoists the flag. It is a day to honour the spirit of freedom and support India's future ascent to greater heights.

Taking note of all that is written above, let's work together to build India of our desires. someone who really needs help this Christmas. With Faith in mind and pride in Soul, a very Happy Republic Day 2024!

Republic Day 2024 Long Speech

Fellow Citizens, It is a day of immense pride and joy as we commemorate the historic moment when India’s Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, marking the country’s transition to a sovereign, democratic, and republic state.

This day holds profound significance in the hearts of every Indian, as it symbolises the culmination of our hard-fought struggle for independence and the dawning of a new era of hope, equality, and justice.

The Republic Day lies in its embodiment of the core principles that guide our nation – justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and the responsibility we bear to uphold the democratic ideals they fought for. As we celebrate this day, we also reflect on the progress we have made as a nation and the challenges that lie ahead.

India’s strength lies in its diversity, and Republic Day is a celebration of this rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions that coexist harmoniously within our borders.

It is a day to reaffirm our commitment to unity in diversity and to embrace the pluralistic ethos that defines our nation.

While we celebrate our achievements, we must also acknowledge the challenges that confront us.  However, the journey has not been without obstacles. Poverty, illiteracy, and inequality still cast long shadows across our path.

Our strength is tested by internal divisions and global uncertainties, yet with every challenge, we emerge stronger, inspired by the unwavering spirit of those who endured colonial oppression and the indomitable will of our democracy.

As a republic, we are duty-bound to address issues of social inequality, economic disparity, and environmental sustainability. It is incumbent upon each one of us to contribute to the nation’s progress and work towards building a more inclusive and equitable society.

“In the land of diversity, where dreams take flight, On this Republic Day, let’s shine so bright. With freedom in our hearts, and faith in our might, Pride in our unity, we stand for what’s right.”

Republic Day is a celebration of our unity in diversity. India, a land of myriad cultures, languages, religions, and traditions, stands as a testament to the idea that unity can thrive amidst diversity. Our tricolor flag symbolizes this unity – the saffron color signifies strength and courage, the white middle band indicates peace and truth with the Dharma Chakra, and the green shows the fertility, growth, and auspiciousness of our land.

As we celebrate this day, let us also acknowledge the progress India has made over the years. From a nascent nation struggling with the challenges of post-colonial development, India has emerged as a global player in various fields. Our advancements in technology, medicine, science, and space exploration have put us on the world map. Our economy, one of the fastest-growing in the world, continues to show resilience and potential.

Looking ahead, the youth of our nation hold the key to our future. With one of the largest young populations in the world, India’s hope lies in empowering these young minds with education, opportunities, and the right values. We must strive to build an India where every child has access to quality education, every citizen has the opportunity to thrive, and where inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation are the cornerstones of our development.

As we celebrate Republic Day, let’s renew our commitment to our nation – to uphold the values enshrined in our Constitution, to work towards an inclusive and progressive India, and to fulfill the dreams of our founding fathers. Let us pledge to contribute in our ways to the nation’s growth and prosperity.

Speech on Republic Day in English

Short Speech on Republic Day

Speech on republic day.

Good morning to all. My name is…… I read in class….. As we all know that we have gathered here on the very special occasion of our nation called as Republic Day of India. I would like to narrate a Republic Day speech in front of you. First of all I would like to say a lot of thank to my class teacher as just because of her I have got such a wonderful opportunity in my school to come on this stage and speak something about my beloved country on its great occasion of Republic day.

India is a self-governing country since 15 th of August 1947. India got independence from the British rule on 15 th of August in 1947 which we celebrate as Independence Day, However, on 26 th of January since 1950 we celebrate as Republic Day. The Constitution of India came into force on 26 th of January in 1950, so we celebrate this day as the Republic Day every year. This year in 2016, we are celebrating 75 th republic day of India.

Republic means the supreme power of the people living in the country and only public has rights to elect their representatives as political leader to lead the country in right direction. So, India is a Republic country where public elects its leaders as a president, prime minister , etc. Our Great Indian freedom fighters have struggled a lot to the “Purna Swaraj” in India. They did so that their future generations may live without struggle and led country ahead.

The name of our great Indian leaders and freedom fighters are Mahatma Gandhi , Bhagat Singh , Chandra Shekher Ajad, Lala Lajpath Rai , Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel, Lal bahadur Shastri , etc. They fought continuously against the British rule to make India a free country. We can never forget their sacrifices towards our country. We should remember them on such great occasions and salute them. It has become possible just because of them that we can think from our own mind and live freely in our nation without anyone’s force.

Our first Indian President was Dr. Rajendra Prasad who said that, “We find the whole of this vast land brought together under the jurisdiction of one constitution and one union which takes over responsibility for the welfare of more than 320 million men and women inhabit it”.

How shame to say that still we are fighting with crime, corruption and violence (in the form of terrorist, rape, theft, riots, strikes, etc) in our country. Again, there is a need to get together to save our country from such slavery as it is pulling our nation back from going to its main stream of development and progress. We should be aware of our social issues like Poverty , unemployment, illiteracy, global warming , inequality, etc in order to solve them to go ahead.

Dr. Abdul Kalam has said that “If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the Father, the Mother and the Teacher”. As a citizen of the country we should think seriously about it and do all possible efforts to lead our nation.

Thanks, Jai Hind

India is a democratic country where public is authorized to elect its leaders to lead the country. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was our first President of India. Since we got independence from the British rule in 1947, our country has developed a lot and counted among the powerful countries. Together with some developments, some drawbacks have also arisen such inequality, poverty, unemployment, corruption, illiteracy, etc. We need to take a pledge today for solving such problems in the society to make our country a best country of the world.

Republic Day 2024 Speech 3

I would like to say good morning to My Respected Principal, Sir, Madam and my dear colleagues. As we all know that we get together here to celebrate 75 th Republic Day of our nation. This is very auspicious occasion for all of us. Since 1950, we are celebrating Republic Day every year with lots of joy and happiness. Before starting the celebration, our chief guest of the Republic Day hoists the national flag of India . Then we all stand up and sing our Indian national anthem which is a symbol unity and peace in India. Our National Anthem is written by the great poet Rabindranath Tagore .

Our national flag has three colors and a wheel in the center with 24 equal sticks. All the three colors of our Indian National Flag have some meaning. Top saffron colour of our flag denotes the strength and courage of our country. The middle white colour indicates peace however lower green colour indicates the growth and prosperity. There is a navy blue wheel in the center having 24 equal spokes indicating Dharma Chakra of the great king Ashoka .

Speech on 2024 Republic Day 4

I would like to say good morning to our respected Principal, my teachers, my seniors and colleagues. Let me let you know something about this special occasion. Today we are celebrating 75th republic day of our nation. It was started celebrating since 1950, two and half years later to the Independence of India in 1947. We celebrate it every year on 26th of January as our constitution came into effect on the same day. After getting independence from the British rule in 1947, India was not a self-ruled country means a sovereign state. India became a self-governing country when its constitution came into effect in 1950.

India is a republic country which has no any king or queen to rule it however public of this country is the ruler. Every one of us living in this country has equal rights, no one can be a president, chief minister or prime minister without voting of us. We have the right to choose our best Prime Minister or other leaders to lead this country in the right direction. Our leaders should be capable enough to think in the favor of our country. He should think equally about every states, villages and cities of the country so that India can be a well developed country without any discrimination of race, religion, poor, rich, high class, lower class, middle class, illiteracy, etc.

Our leader should have dominating property in the favor of country so that each and every official may follow all the rules and regulations in correct way. Every official should follow the Indian rules and regulations in order to make this country a corruption free country. Only a corruption free India would really and truly mean a country with “Unity in Diversity”.

Our leaders should not understand them a special person, as they are one from us and have been selected according to their capability to lead the country. They have been selected by us to serve their truthful services to the India for a limited time period. So, there should not be any confusion between their own ego and authority and position.

As being an Indian citizen, we too are fully responsible about our country. We should make ourselves up-to-date, read news and be completely aware of what are going on in our country, what are going on wrong or right, what are our leaders doing and firstly what we are doing for our country. Earlier, India was a slave country under British rule which was made independent after several years of struggle by the sacrifices of thousands of lives of our freedom fighters. So, we should not let go easily their all priceless sacrifices and make this country a slave country again under corruption, illiteracy, inequality and other social discrimination. Today is the best day when we should take an oath to preserve our country’s real meaning, position, status and most importantly culture of humanity.

Long Speech on Republic Day of India – 7

Greetings to all of you on 75 th Republic Day of India! This year we are celebrating our 75 th Republic Day on 26 th January and also our transition from a colonial governed state to an independent Republic.

As we all know that India gained independence on 15 th August 1947, but we remained as dominion status under the British, until 26 th January 1950, when the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly; marking India’s emergence as a fully Independent, Democratic and Republic Nation.

The freedom and rights that we enjoy today as the citizens of India, not to mention this Democratic setup, we owe it all to our Constitution and to the people who created it. Constitution of India is her supreme governing document; it is a rule book of India that includes everything from rights of an ordinary citizen to the rights of its President. It assures the citizens of fundamental rights and justice, liberty and fraternity.

Much had been sacrificed by our freedom fighters to gain independence. Many even lost their lives for it. They could have easily rested their guards and enjoyed the fruits of independence; instead they took the laborious and painful task of formulating a Constitution for India. Because they had a vision! They had a vision of India where no discrimination is made among its people on the basis of caste, religion, ethnicity etc; where equal opportunity is provided to all irrespective of caste, region or gender; where freedom of religion, expression, education are provided to the citizens.

At the apex of the idea was a government of the people, for the people and by the people; resting the ultimate power in the hands of people of India. With this vision at heart the noble souls framed the Constitution of India; instead of resting in the joys of independence.

The great men and women who framed our Constitution had a great foresight and well understood the significance of rule of law for peaceful and prosperous existence.

It is very important for us to understand the meaning and values of being a Republic. Being a Republic means having an elected form of government, elected by the people through a Democratic setup. A government where chosen representatives could exercise their powers according to the rule of law as enshrined in the Constitution. People have the power to overthrow the government on the charges of non performance or corruption.

In the Republic of India, people are its true stakeholders and the pillars. We all are the pillars of Republic of India in our own capacities. Soldier who defends the Republic of India is a pillar; mothers nurture the pillars of Republic; fathers who look for the needs of the Republic; doctors, engineers, lawyers who tend to our Republic in their own ways; teachers who instill good values into our Republic; officers who maintain law and order or dispense their public duties for the Republic; ministers and elected representatives who formulate the policies for the Republic; even the sweeper who keeps our republic clean is a pillar of the Republic of India.

I may have missed mentioning many, but the bottom line is that every citizen of India is a pillar on which the legacy of Republic of India stands.

We all must together take the legacy of India forward, cherishing our Republican and Democratic values, moving on the path of progress and prosperity. Moving a huge nation on the path to progress and prosperity is indeed a big project. It will require an effort from each one of us; which is only possible when we stay united and admire the principles of Republican and Democratic setup.

A Nation will be able to prosper and grow only when its people are happy and content. To be happy we need to have rights, powers, equal opportunities, justice, liberty and fraternity. These Rights are guaranteed by the Constitution of India, whose inception we celebrate as Republic Day.

It is therefore Ladies and Gentlemen, not only a gazetted holiday but also a day to admire the principles of Republic and thank the men and women who framed our Constitution. Take a day off from your daily routine to teach your children the significance of Constitution and the principles of Democracy and Republic.

Celebrate the Republic Day with Nationalism at heart and in your conduct too. Acknowledge the fact that we all are equal irrespective of our caste, creed, religion, gender, ethnicity, language spoken or financial status. Instill the same values into our children. Remember, they too are the pillars of the Republic of India and the ones to whom we will be later handing the Nation’s legacy.

With this Ladies and Gentlemen I conclude my speech on Republic Day, wishing you all once again a very Happy Republic Day and hoping that we will achieve the goals of development and prosperity soon; together! God Bless You!

We celebrate Republic Day in India on 26th January every year because the Constitution of India came into force on this day. We have been celebrating Republic Day of India continuously since 1950 because the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950.

Republic means the supreme power of the people living in the country and only the people have the right to choose their representatives as political leaders to lead the country in the right direction. Therefore, India is a republic country where the people choose their leader as the Prime Minister.

Our great Indian freedom fighters fought a lot for “Purna Swaraj” in India. He sacrificed his life so that his future generation does not have to struggle and they take the country forward.

India is a democratic country where the people are empowered to choose their leader to lead the country. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India. Ever since we got independence from British rule in 1947, our country has developed a lot and is counted among the most powerful countries.

With the development, some shortcomings have also arisen like inequality, poverty, unemployment, corruption, illiteracy, etc. To make our country the best country in the world, we need to take a pledge today to solve such problems in society.

Now, I am going to end my speech with these words, thank you So Much.

26 January 2024 republic day speech in English

G ood morning to all my respected teachers, guardians, and dear friends.

India is a self-governing country since 15 August 1947. India got independence from British rule on 15th August in 1947, which we celebrate as Independence Day. However, since 1950 on 26 January we celebrate Republic Day.

The Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950, so we celebrate this day as Republic Day every year. In this year 2024, we are celebrating the 75th Republic Day of India.

India is a democratic country, which has no king or queen to rule here, although the people here are the rulers here. Every citizen living in this country has equal rights, no one can become Chief Minister or Prime Minister without our vote. We have the right to choose our best prime minister or any other leader to lead the country in the right direction.

Our leader should have enough skill to think in favor of his country. He should think equally about all the states, villages, and cities of the country so that India can become a well-developed country without any discrimination of race, religion, poor, rich, upper class, middle class, lower class, illiteracy, etc.

The great leaders and freedom fighters of our country are Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, etc. To make India a free country, these people fought continuously against the British, so we can never forget their dedication to our country.

We should salute them on such great occasions by remembering them. It is only because of these people that we can think with our minds and live freely in our nation without any pressure.

Our first Indian President was Dr. Rajendra Prasad who said that “Under the jurisdiction of one Constitution and one Union, we have got together the entire part of this vast land which is the population of more than 320 crore men and women living here- Takes responsibility for welfare” .

What a shame it is to say that we are still fighting crime, corruption, and violence in our country. Again, everyone needs to be together to save the country from such slavery as it is holding back our country from going into its mainstream of development and progress.

We should go ahead and be aware of our social issues like poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, global warming, inequality, etc. to solve them.

Dr. Abdul Kalam has said that “If a country becomes corruption-free and becomes a nation of a beautiful mind, I strongly feel that there are three prime members who can make a difference. He is father, mother, and a guru”. As a citizen of India, we should think about it seriously and make all possible efforts to take forward our country.

Now I am going to conclude my speech, thank you all for being here and making this program a success.

Jai Hind /Jai Bharat

Speech on Republic Day

Republic Day Speech in English for students

As we all know that we all have gathered here on the very special occasion of our nation which is called Republic Day.

I want to deliver a speech on Republic Day in front of all of you. First of all, I would like to thank my class teacher because of whom I got a golden opportunity to say something about my beloved country on this great occasion of Republic Day on this platform of my school.

Today we all are celebrating the 75th Republic Day of our nation. After two and a half years of India’s independence in 1947, it started celebrating from the year 1950. We celebrate it every year on 26th January because on this day the Constitution of India came into existence.

Our country became independent on 15th August 1947 after a long war of independence and lakhs of sacrifices. But still, this freedom was incomplete because at that time our country was divided into many pieces, which was the biggest challenge of the country to unite.

Because our country did not have any written constitution of its own. No development is possible without discipline, be it a person or a country. Keeping this in mind, the Constituent Assembly was formed, which had 299 members.

It was presided over by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Its first meeting was held in December 1946. And in 2 years 11 months 18 days it was finally completed on 26 November 1949. It was implemented across the country on 26 January 1950.

There is also a historical story behind this, as this day was not chosen for Republic Day. There is a big reason behind this. It was on this day, 26 January 1930, in the Lahore session of the Congress that declared Poorna Swaraj on the banks of the Ravi river.

As Indian citizens, we are also fully responsible for our country. We should make ourselves regular, read the news and be aware of the happenings in the country, what is happening right and wrong, what our leaders are doing, and first of all what we are doing for our country.

Earlier, India was a slave country under British rule which got freedom after many years of struggle through the sacrifices of thousands of our freedom fighters. Therefore, we should not easily let go of all our precious sacrifices and again let it become a slave to corruption, illiteracy, inequality, and other social discrimination.

Today is the best day when we should pledge to preserve the real meaning, status, prestige of our country, and most importantly the culture of humanity.

The great heroes of our country have fulfilled their responsibility by giving us freedom and making a constitution. In a democracy, there is a system of the people, the people are the people. Therefore, it becomes our fundamental duty to protect and respect the system and constitution of our country.

Addressing you today on this auspicious occasion, I end my speech by paying my respects and tributes to those great revolutionaries.

Many thanks to all of you…

Bharat Mata ki Jay… Jay Hind

I hope guys, you like this Republic Day speech please share it with your students.

Republic Day Speech 1

Good morning to all. My name is…… I read in class….. As we all know that we have gathered here on the very special occasion of our nation called as Republic Day of India. I would like to narrate a Republic Day speech in front of you. First of all I would like to say a lot of thank to my class teacher as just because of her I have got such a wonderful opportunity in my school to come on this stage and speak something about my beloved country on its great occasion of Republic day.

Republic Day

India is a self-governing country since 15 th of August 1947. India got independence from the British rule on 15 th of August in 1947 which we celebrate as Independence Day, However, on 26 th of January since 1950 we celebrate as Republic Day. The Constitution of India came into force on 26 th of January in 1950, so we celebrate this day as the Republic Day every year. This year in 2016, we are celebrating 67 th republic day of India.

Republic means the supreme power of the people living in the country and only public has rights to elect their representatives as political leader to lead the country in right direction. So, India is a Republic country where public elects its leaders as a president, prime minister, etc. Our Great Indian freedom fighters have struggled a lot to the “Purna Swaraj” in India. They did so that their future generations may live without struggle and led country ahead.

The name of our great Indian leaders and freedom fighters are Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekher Ajad, Lala Lajpath Rai, Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel, Lal bahadur Shastri, etc.

We should be aware of our social issues like Poverty , unemployment, illiteracy , global warming, inequality, etc in order to solve them to go ahead.

Thanks, Jai Hind.

We are regularly celebrating the Republic Day of India since 1950 as on 26 th of January in 1950 India constitution came into force.

Republic Day Speech 3

I would like to say good morning to My Respected Principal, Sir, Madam and my dear colleagues. As we all know that we get together here to celebrate 67 th Republic Day of our nation. Our National Anthem is written by the great poet Rabindranath Tagore.

There is a navy blue wheel in the center having 24 equal spokes indicating Dharma Chakra of the great king Ashoka.

We celebrate republic day on 26 January as the Indian constitution came into force at this day in 1950. At republic day celebration, a big arrangement takes place by the government of India in New Delhi at Rajpath in front of the India Gate. Every year, a chief guest (prime minister of other country) is invited to fulfill the purpose of saying “Atithi Devo Bhava” as well as enhance the glory of the occasion. Indian army do republic day parade and take salute of the National Flag. There is also a big exhibition of the Indian culture and tradition takes place by the different Indian states to show the Unity in Diversity in India.

Republic Day Speech 4

I would like to say good morning to our respected Principal, my teachers, my seniors and colleagues. Let me let you know something about this special occasion. Today we are celebrating 67th republic day of our nation.

Thanks, Jai Hind

The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 th of November in 1949 by the by Indian Constituent Assembly however implemented later in 1950 with a democratic government system declaring the country as independent republic. 26 January was especially selected because on the same day in 1930 Indian National Congress had declared Indian Independence means Purna Swaraj. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of Republic India in 1950 after the adoption of Constitution.

A grand parade by the Indian army (from all three services) is organized in the national capital (New Delhi) as well as state capitals of the country. On 26 January, India was declared Purna Swaraj by the Indian National Congress in 1930 that’s why 26 January was chosen to bring Indian Constitution into force. After its enforcement the Union of India officially became contemporary Republic of India which had replaced the Government of India Act 1935 to fundamental governing document. Our country was declared a sovereign, secular, socialist, and democratic republic by the Constitution. Our constitution assures the citizens of India about justice, liberty, and equality among them.

Our Indian Constitution was drafted by the Constituent Assembly (389 members). It took around three years (actually two years, eleven months and eighteen days) to be written. A Drafting Committee was set up by the Constituent Assembly on 29 th of August in 1947 to draft the Constitution under the Chairmanship of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Long Speech on Republic Day of India – 7

Greetings to all of you on 70 th Republic Day of India! This year we are celebrating our 70 th Republic Day on 26 th January and also our transition from a colonial governed state to an independent Republic.

Trump trial schedule: Latest on the trial and what you should expect this week

a long speech on republic day

Former President Donald Trump 's hush money trial is on break Monday, but court will reconvene Tuesday morning .

Although the jurors and lawyers typically gather on Monday mornings, Judge Juan Merchan ruled last week that there would be no proceedings Monday, April 29.

Monday is part of the last two days of the Jewish holiday of Passover . Court also let out early on April 22 and April 23 to allow people to travel for religious gatherings.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records to disguise the hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels that allegedly constituted an illegal campaign contribution.

Here is what to know as Trump's trial continues into Week 3:

Trump trial live updates: Testimony to continue on Cohen hush money recording

Trump trial schedule

The tria is expected to last six to eight weeks, according to a media advisory .

Proceedings typically start at 9:30 a.m. local time and run through the business day. Court is on break on Wednesdays .

Trial is not televised, but you can read transcripts

New York City Criminal Court is publishing the trial transcripts and copies of evidence shown to the jury.

Transcripts of proceedings aren't always available, but officials decided to make them available because of "unparalleled public interest."

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday's transcripts are available now on the New York State Unified Court System's media website. Evidence shown to the jury, including texts, emails and photos , also are available from last week's proceedings.

Week 2 ended during third witness testimony

Jurors heard from three witnesses last week.

First, David Pecker, former head of the National Enquirer’s parent company, testified about how he used the publication to write positive stories about Trump and prevent negative stories about him from coming out during his 2016 presidential campaign.

His testimony and cross-examination spanned three days. He also said his editor-in-chief believed Stormy Daniels' story about an alleged sexual encounter in 2006, which Trump denies.

Trump's former executive assistant Rhona Graff made a brief appearance on the witness stand Friday. When court wrapped for the week, the prosecution was questioning Gary Farro, former senior managing director at First Republic Bank. Farro, who was former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's banker in 2016, could be used to bring in email evidence about the payment to Daniels. CNN reported Cohen used money from his home equity line to cover Daniels' payment, and an email from a First Republic Bank employee confirmed the transfer.

Leaving the courthouse Friday, Trump challenged President Joe Biden to a debate.

“We’ll do it at the White House,” Trump said. “That would be very comfortable, actually.”

An explosion has injured five people in the Russian city of Belgorod, its governor says.

Vyacheslav Gladkov said 30 homes and 10 cars were damaged, without specifying the source of the explosion.

The wounded were taken to hospital with shrapnel wounds including to the head and face, he said.

He said it was "miraculous" nobody had died in the incident.

Belgorod is located near the border with Ukraine, across from the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

Photographs taken in Kharkiv, Ukraine, show firefighters tackling a blaze caused by a Russian missile strike.

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said a civilian building was set ablaze overnight, injuring  four people, including a 13-year-old child.

Russian state agency RIA claimed Moscow's forces struck a drone warehouse in Kharkiv that had been used by Ukrainian troops.

The Russian embassy to the UK has branded Lord Cameron's remarks as "confirmation of the UK's increasing direct involvement" in the war.

On a visit to Kyiv, the foreign secretary said Ukraine had a right to use British weapons to strike targets inside Russia, and that it was up to Ukraine whether to do so.

"Guided by its own purely political purposes, including opportunistic electoral considerations, the UK government is persistently pursuing a course of escalation and expansion of geography of military actions," read a statement by the Russian embassy.

It continued: "When the tasks of the special military operation are completed, all those involved in the strikes on peaceful Russian cities and other criminal acts will face the punishment they deserve."

Russian officials often refer to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine as a special military operation.

Kyiv has responded to earlier reports that Russia has put Volodymyr Zelenskyy on a wanted list.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry said it demonstrated the "desperation of the Russian state machine and propaganda, which are at a loss for what else to invent to garner attention".

A statement from the ministry continued: "We would like to remind everyone that, unlike the worthless Russian announcements, the International Criminal Court's warrant for the arrest of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on war crimes charges is real and enforceable in 123 countries."

The Group of Seven nations is discussing a proposal to send up to $50bn (£39.9bn) in aid to Ukraine, reports say.

The US has proposed the money is repaid with the windfall profits from Russian assets frozen in Europe, according to Bloomberg.

America is pushing other G7 leaders - the heads of the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, France and Japan - to agree on the plan when they meet in June.

But discussions have been difficult and an agreement could take months, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the proposal.

The move comes after Washington approved a major assistance package worth $61bn last month, which had been delayed for months by Republicans in the House of Representatives.

It will likely take weeks until US military assistance arrives on the frontline at scale, according to an American thinktank.

The Institute for the Study of War said Russian forces will take advantage of the lag to try and make "operationally significant gains in key sectors", such as near Chasiv Yar and Avdiivka.

But should these gains be made, they will not signal the collapse the Ukraine's defences, said the ISW.

Earlier today, we reported how heavy fighting was taking place in villages near Avdiivka and Bakhmut, as well as Chasiv Yar, to Bakhmut's west.

A senior Ukrainian intelligence chief said it is "probably a matter of time" before Chasiv Yar falls.

Ukraine received artillery shells, missiles and anti-armour rockets on 28 and 29 April in the first instalments of America's newly approved $61bn  tranche of aid, the New York Times reported.

Citing a senior Spanish official, the news outlet said a Patriot interceptor missiles arrived in Poland en route to Ukraine on Tuesday.

Russia has put Volodymyr Zelenskyy on a wanted list, Russian state media reports.

Moscow has opened a criminal case against the Ukrainian president, according to Tass news agency.

It cited the Russian interior ministry's database, but gave no further details.

Russia has issued arrest warrants for a number of Ukrainian and other European politicians since the start of the war.

Russian police put Estonian prime minister Kaja Kallas, Lithuania's culture minister and members of the previous Latvian parliament on a wanted list for destroying Soviet-era monuments.

Russia also issued an arrest warrant for the International Criminal Court prosecutor who last year prepared a warrant for Vladimir Putin on war crimes charges.

Another attack has been reported in Kharkiv, following drone strikes overnight.

The region's governor said Russian troops shelled the area, leaving a 74-year-old woman injured and in need of hospitalisation.

"As a result of five strikes, two two-story apartment buildings, one private house and networks were damaged," Oleg Synegubov said.

A private house was also struck.

Around $498,000 (£396,000) in funds meant for the reconstruction of a heavily damaged Kyiv suburb has "disappeared," Ukraine's State Audit Service has said.

Borodianka, once a town of 12,000 people, suffered massive destruction in the early weeks of Russia's invasion.

Money has been directed at the suburb for its reconstruction since, but an audit of the town council found a large discrepancy related to plastic-metal windows, which were noted down for installation but never actually put in.

More losses were found when the auditors found that some materials had been purchased and installed at higher rates that the market price.

A Proclamation on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month,   2024

This month, we celebrate the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities, whose ingenuity, grit, and perseverance have pushed our great American experiment forward.

From Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders whose ancestors have called their lands home for hundreds of years to Asian immigrants who have newly arrived and those whose families have been here for generations — AA and NHPI heritage has long been a part of the history of our great country and a defining force in the soul of our Nation.  As artists and journalists, doctors and engineers, business and community leaders, and so much more, AA and NHPI peoples have shaped the very fabric of our Nation and opened up new possibilities for all of us.  I am proud that they serve at the highest levels of my Administration, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Ambassador Katherine Tai, Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su, and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Arati Prabhakar, who make this country a better place each and every day.  This year, we are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the White House Initiative and President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, who work across government to advance equity, opportunity, and justice for AA and NHPI communities.

I have always believed that diversity is our Nation’s greatest strength.  That is why I launched the first-ever National Strategy to Advance Equity, Justice, and Opportunity for AA and NHPI Communities.  This strategy works to harness the full potential of these communities — from combating anti-Asian hate to making government services accessible in more languages.  To ensure the legacies of AA and NHPI peoples are properly honored in the story of America, I signed historic legislation that will bring us closer to a National Museum of Asian Pacific American History and Culture.  I also issued a Presidential Memorandum to consider expanding protections for the Pacific Remote Islands to conserve this unique area’s significant natural and cultural resources and honor the traditional practices and ancestral pathways of Pacific Island voyagers, and I signed the Amache National Historic Site Act to establish a memorial honoring the 10,000 Japanese Americans who were unjustly incarcerated there during World War II.  Throughout my time in office, the First Lady and I have hosted celebrations at the White House that highlight the incredible diversity of AA and NHPI communities, like Diwali and the first-ever White House Lunar New Year celebration.  This year, to ensure that the full diversity of AA and NHPI communities is seen and valued as new policy is being made, we updated the Federal Government’s standards for collecting data on race and ethnicity for the first time in over 25 years.

Meanwhile, we are creating new opportunities for AA and NHPI communities by building an economy that works for everyone, including investing in AA and NHPI small businesses and entrepreneurs.  Since I took office, the Small Business Administration provided over $22 billion in loans to AA and NHPI entrepreneurs.  We have seen the results:  During my Administration, we achieved the highest Asian American employment and entrepreneurship rates in over a decade.

Last year, the First Lady and I witnessed the absolute courage of the Native Hawaiian people and Hawaii’s Asian American and Pacific Islander communities when we visited Maui in the wake of the devastating fires.  The destruction upended so many lives, and yet the community showed up ready to help rebuild stronger than before.  My Administration has their backs — we are committed to making sure Maui has everything the Federal Government can offer to heal and build back better and as fast as possible.  Throughout these efforts, we remain focused on rebuilding the way the people of Maui want to build by respecting sacred lands, cultures, and traditions.

Racism, harassment, and hate crimes against people of AA and NHPI heritage also persist — a tragic reminder that hate never goes away; it only hides.  Hate must have no safe harbor in America — that is why I signed the bipartisan COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, which makes it easier for Americans to report hate crimes, and I also hosted the first-ever White House summit against hate-fueled violence.  We are also working to address the scourge of gun violence, which takes the lives of too many AA and NHPI loved ones.  I signed the most significant gun safety law in nearly 30 years.  My Administration has taken actions to expand background checks and fund efforts to strengthen red flag laws to keep Americans out of harm’s way.  There is still so much to do, and I continue to urge the Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Our Nation was founded on the idea that we are all created equal and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives.  We have never fully realized this promise, but we have never fully walked away from it either.  As we celebrate the historic accomplishments of AA and NHPIs across our Nation, we promise we will never stop working to form a more perfect Union.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2024 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.  I call upon all Americans to learn more about the histories of the AA and NHPI community and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

                        JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

Biden campaign condemns Trump's refusal to commit to honoring November election results

Joe Biden ’s re-election campaign has come out swinging against Donald Trump ’s refusal in an interview yesterday to commit to accepting the results of the presidential election in November.

From spokesman James Singer :

President Biden has said, ‘You can’t love your country only when you win.’ But for Donald Trump, his campaign for revenge and retribution reigns supreme. In his own words, he is promising to rule as a dictator on ‘day one’, use the military against the American people, punish those who stand against him, condone violence done on his behalf and put his own quest for power ahead of what is best for America. Bottom line: Trump is a danger to the constitution and a threat to our democracy. The American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence and his thirst for revenge.

Closing summary

In a surprise address from the White House, Joe Biden condemned violence on university campuses where pro-Palestine demonstrations are taking place, while saying the unrest would not spur him to change his policies in the Middle East. Meanwhile, his campaign hit out at Donald Trump , who yesterday held a rally in swing state Wisconsin and refused to commit to accepting the results of the November presidential election. Trump also repeated his debunked claim that the 2020 election was marred by fraud.

Here’s what else happened today:

Biden met with the families of four law enforcement officers killed while serving a warrant in North Carolina last week, as well as those wounded in the shooting.

Trump stayed away from the issue of abortion in his Wisconsin appearance, which Democrats have used to direct voter anger against Republicans in recent elections there and in other states.

In addition to Wisconsin , Trump also visited fellow Great Lakes swing state Michigan, where his fans offered a reprieve from the dreary New York courthouse in which he has lately been spending a lot of time.

The campus protests are the latest complication to Biden’s re-election chances, after he sparked the ire of key Democratic voting groups by backing Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

Napping in court? Not me , Trump said, despite reports to the contrary.

Perhaps you have heard that South Dakota’s Republican governor Kristi Noem killed a dog (the Guardian broke the story , after all!). Noem now says she had no choice, but blamed “fake news” (must be referring to us) for pushing the story that may have sunk her chances of becoming Donald Trump’s running mate, the Guardian’s Martin Pengelly reports:

Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota whose chance of being Donald Trump’s presidential running mate was widely deemed over after she published a description of shooting dead a dog and a goat , claimed reports of the story were “fake news” but also that the dog in question, Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer, was “extremely dangerous” and deserved her fate.

“You know how the fake news works,” Noem told Fox News. “They leave out some or most of the facts of a story, they put the worst spin on it. And that’s what’s happened in this case.

“I hope people really do buy this book and they find out the truth of the story because the truth of the story is that this was a working dog and it was not a puppy. It was a dog that was extremely dangerous.”

The Guardian first reported Noem’s story of killing Cricket the dog and an unnamed, un-castrated male goat. The story is contained in Noem’s book, No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward, which will be published next week. The Guardian obtained a copy.

In the book, Noem says her description of killing a dog and a goat illustrates her willingness to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly” in politics as well as on her South Dakota farm – a defence she repeated before her Fox News interview.

Noem says Cricket ruined a pheasant hunt and then killed a neighbour’s chickens, all the while presenting “the picture of pure joy”.

Legal proceedings can be dull, sometimes so dull they put you to sleep – even if you happen to be a former president.

On the first day of his trial in New York, Donald Trump appeared to shut his eyes for an extended period of time. That was a couple of weeks ago now, but he just got around to denying doing so, in a post on Truth Social :

Contrary to the FAKE NEWS MEDIA, I don’t fall asleep during the Crooked D.A.’s Witch Hunt, especially not today. I simply close my beautiful blue eyes, sometimes, listen intensely, and take it ALL in!!!

Here’s more on the alleged nap:

Yesterday, Donald Trump was appearing before crowds in Michigan and Wisconsin – two swing states that will put him well on his way to the White House, if he wins them in November.

Today, he’s back at the defense table in a Manhattan courtroom, where his lawyers are cross-examining Keith Davidson , a former attorney for Stormy Daniels , the adult film actor at the center of the case against him for allegedly falsifying business records.

Follow our live blog for the latest from the trial:

Fun fact about Joe Biden: the 2020 election was the first one in which he faced a sustained campaign of negative television advertising, the New York Times reports .

And it goes without saying that 2024 will be his second. In a look back at his lengthy political career, the Times recounts what it was like for the Republicans who attempted to oust Biden from his Senate seat in Delaware, over the 36 years he represented the state.

Biden was something of juggernaut, his ex-opponents recount, both personally, and in the campaign infrastructure he wielded:

In Delaware, Mr. Biden was so well known and, in his early years in office, had such a wellspring of sympathy from voters after the tragic crash that killed his first wife and daughter, that no rival ever mounted a sustained case that he should not be re-elected. For years, bumper stickers promoting his re-election just said ‘Joe,’ while opponents lost with an array of long-forgotten slogans. ‘I don’t think he ever broke a sweat once he was an incumbent,’ said Jane Brady, a Republican who lost to Mr. Biden by 27 points in 1990 . The only negative ad run against Mr. Biden between 1978 and 2008, according to the University of Oklahoma’s archive, is one that his campaign would most likely embrace today. That 30-second spot reminded viewers that President Ronald Reagan endorsed John Burris, Mr. Biden’s Republican challenger in 1984, while Mr. Biden backed the unpopular Democratic presidential nominee, Walter Mondale.

The Biden of today often makes gaffes, to the chagrin of his supporters, and the delight of his enemies. Here’s an example of a recent one, which was seized on by the conservative media:

Just last week, Mr. Biden prompted the crowd at an endorsement event to chant, ‘Four more years!’ and then added ‘pause’ as it appeared to have been written into his teleprompter, an episode that drew much mocking in conservative news media and quiet forehead-slapping among Democrats.

Back in the day, the Times reports such things did not happen:

Mr. Biden’s opponent in 1996 and 2002 was Ray Clatworthy, an entrepreneur who owned restaurants and local Christian radio stations. During a 1996 televised debate , Mr. Clatworthy accused Mr. Biden of raising taxes while voting to increase his own salary and accused him of ‘attempting to portray himself as a conservative’ in an election year. Mr. Biden spoke quickly and precisely, without entering the verbal cul-de-sacs endemic to many of his presidential speeches 28 years later. Mr. Biden sought to pin down Mr. Clatworthy on his anti-abortion stance and then delivered a clear statement of his own views on the issue after Mr. Clatworthy accused him of flip-flopping to endorse abortion rights in his 1988 presidential campaign. ‘My position has been consistent from the very beginning,’ Mr. Biden said of his abortion stance. ‘I believe government should stay out – no constitutional amendment, no public funding.’

Joe Biden is now in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he is meeting with the families of four law enforcement officers killed and four others who were wounded while serving a warrant last week.

The shooting was the deadliest attack against police in the United States since 2016. Here’s more about what happened:

As Donald Trump rallied elsewhere in Wisconsin, demonstrators convened outside the venue that will host the Republican National Convention this summer to decry his vow to bring back hardline immigration policies if elected, the Guardian’s Alice Herman reports:

Led by a mariachi band, hundreds of demonstrators on Wednesday morning marched across Milwaukee to the Fiserv Forum – the home of the Milwaukee Bucks and, in July, the venue of the Republican National Convention.

The rally, organized by the immigrant and workers’ rights group Voces de la Frontera, is an annual event, but in 2024 it holds particular weight. The focus of the rally extended beyond immigration, to fear of authoritarianism under Republican candidate Donald Trump and critique of Joe Biden’s handling of the US role in Israel and Gaza.

This year, May Day also fell on the same day as a Trump campaign event in Waukesha, which organizers seized on to denounce Trump’s immigration policy and call on Biden to use his executive authority to adopt protections for undocumented workers.

“We reject [Trump’s] political platform, which promises dictatorship, deportations and separation of families,” Voces de la Frontera executive director Christine Neumann-Ortiz told the crowd on Wednesday, to applause.

While Donald Trump kept mum about abortion in a visit to to the swing state of Wisconsin, he was far more open in a pair of interviews with Time in which he described in depth what he would like to do if returned to the White House. The Guardian’s Ed Pilkington has more:

Donald Trump has warned that Joe Biden and his family could face multiple criminal prosecutions once he leaves office unless the US supreme court awards Trump immunity in his own legal battles with the criminal justice system.

In a sweeping interview with Time magazine , Trump painted a startling picture of his second term, from how he would wield the justice department to hinting he may let states monitor pregnant women to enforce abortion laws.

Trump made the threat against the Biden family in an interview with Eric Cortellessa of Time, in which he shared the outlines of what the magazine called “an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world”.

Trump made a direct connection between his threat to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Bidens should he win re-election in November with the case currently before the supreme court over his own presidential immunity.

Asked whether he intends to “go after” the Bidens should he gain a second term in the White House, Trump replied: “It depends what happens with the supreme court.”

A potentially landmark lawsuit by youth activists against the federal government over its role in fueling the climate crisis was struck down by an appeals court, on the request of the Biden administration, the Guardian’s Dharna Noor reports:

A federal appeals court on Wednesday evening granted the Biden administration’s request to strike down a landmark federal youth climate case, outraging climate advocates.

“This is a tragic and unjust ruling,” said Julia Olson, attorney and founder of Our Children’s Trust, the non-profit law firm that brought the suit.

The lawsuit, Juliana v United States, was filed by 21 young people from Oregon who alleged the federal government’s role in fueling the climate crisis violates their constitutional rights.

The Wednesday order from a panel of three Trump-appointed judges on the ninth circuit court of appeals will require a US district court judge to dismiss the case for lack of standing, with no opening to amend the complaint.

The decision affirmed an emergency petition filed by the justice department in February arguing that “the government will be irreparably harmed” if it is forced to spend time and resources litigating the Juliana case. It’s a measure the justice department should never have taken, said Olson.

“The Biden administration was wrong to use an emergency measure to stop youth plaintiffs from having their day in court,” she said in a statement. “The real emergency is the climate emergency.”

The day so far

In a surprise address from the White House, Joe Biden condemned violence on university campuses where pro-Palestine demonstrations are taking place, while saying the unrest would not spur him to change his policies in the Middle East. Meanwhile, his campaign hit out at Donald Trump , who yesterday held a rally in swing state Wisconsin and refused to commit to accepting the results of the November presidential election. He also repeated his debunked claim that the 2020 election was marred by fraud.

Here’s what else has happened today so far:

Joe Biden is already facing heat from some Democratic voters for his support of Israel as it invades Gaza following the 7 October attack. As the Guardian’s Adam Gabbatt reported earlier this week, the unrest on college campuses targeted at America’s closest Middle East ally could present the latest complication to his campaign for another four years in the White House:

The policies of Joe Biden and Democrats towards Israel, which have prompted thousands of students across the country to protest, could affect the youth vote for Biden and hurt his re-election chances, experts have warned, in what is already expected to be a tight election.

Thousands of students at universities across the US have joined with pro-Palestine rallies and, most recently, encampments, as Israel’s war in Gaza has killed more than 34,000 people.

Some of the protests began as a call to encourage universities to ditch investments in companies that provide weapons and equipment to the Israeli military. But as the Biden administration has continued to largely support Israel, the president has increasingly become a focus of criticism from young people. Polling shows that young Americans’ support for Biden has been chipped away since 2020.

With Biden narrowly trailing Trump in several key swing states, it’s a voting bloc the president can ill afford to lose.

“The real threat to Biden is that younger voters, especially college-educated voters, won’t turn out for him in the election,” said Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history of education at the University of Pennsylvania.

“I wouldn’t expect that the protesters on campuses today are going to vote for Trump, almost none of them will. That’s not the danger here. The danger is much simpler: that they simply won’t vote.”

Joe Biden spoke about the nationwide protests against Israel at college campuses after police arrested more than 100 people at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Follow our live blog for more on the ongoing demonstration wave:

In his brief speech on the pro-Palestin e protests on college campuses, Joe Biden cast himself as a defender of free speech rights, but said the demonstrations should not disrupt students’ learning.

“Dissent is essential to democracy, but dissent must never lead to disorder or to denying the rights of others, so students can finish the semester and their college education. Look, it’s basically a matter of fairness. It’s a matter of what’s right. There’s the right to protest, but not the right to cause chaos. People have the right to get an education, right to get a degree, right to walk across campus safely without fear of being attacked,” the president said.

He later added:

There should be no place on any campus, no place in America for antisemitism, or threats of violence against Jewish students. There is no place for hate speech, or violence of any kind, whether it’s antisemitism, Islamophobia, or discrimination against Arab Americans or Palestinian Americans. It’s simply wrong. There’s no place for racism in America. It’s all wrong. It’s not American.

Biden concluded with:

As president, I will always defend free speech. And I will always be just as strong in standing up for the rule of law. That’s my responsibility to you, the American people, my obligation to the constitution.
