- Trivia In 1973, an edited (and silent) version of the cartoon was released as a cartridge for the Fisher-Price Movie Viewer. The small manual, hand crank-operated toy required no batteries and could be played forward or in reverse at any variable speed determined by the user. The viewer itself looked like a cream-colored plastic super-8 camera with a multi-colored circular hand crank on one side and a small plastic window that provided a light source on the other. One end had a small magnifying glass view hole, while the other end had a space for the rectangular movie cartridge. To experience this flicking picture show, the child would insert the yellow cartridge and crank away, watching the movie through the eyepiece. The viewer used an 8mm strip of film that was permanently looped on the inside of the cartridge so that at the end of any particular strip, the clip would simply begin again.

Background [ ]
The Lonesome Ghosts are quite mischievous of playing tricks or scaring trespassers. They reside in an old manor, where they evidently receive few visitors, resulting in boring and lonely nights for the ghosts (hence their name). Their names are: Jasper, Grubb, Boo and Moss.
Appearances [ ]
Lonesome ghosts [ ].
One night during the winter, the ghosts were alone in their mansion (called the "Old McShiver mansion") complaining about the fact that there's absolutely no one left to scare. Soon enough one ghost finds an advertisement in the paper about a ghost-hunting company called the Ghost Exterminators. They call with the shortest ghost disguising his voice, claiming their home is being haunted. The exterminators Mickey, Donald and Goofy head to the mansion, but are locked in and tricked, scared, and teased by the ghosts; Mickey chases a ghost upstairs but is locked in a room which becomes flooded with water, Donald is smacked with a wooden board and spat in the face by a ghost, and Goofy gets stuck inside a dresser and accidentally pricks himself with a pin. Eventually, the trio accidentally crash into barrels of flour and molasses, giving them the appearance of ghosts. The Lonesome Ghosts, absolutely horrified, are scared off and they escape the mansion and run outside.
Bonkers [ ]
One of The Lonesome Ghosts appear as the antagonist in the episode " When the Spirit Moves You ", where Bonkers and Miranda try to catch him.
House of Mouse [ ]
The Lonesome Ghosts in House of Mouse .
They make very few cameos in the series and joined the other villains during the hostile take over in Mickey's House of Villains . Their debut short was also featured in the film. They also appeared in the episode House Ghosts by scaring Pete and pulling his underwear.
The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse [ ]
The Lonesome Ghosts in The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse .
The ghosts appeared in Houseghosts , where they took advantage of Mickey's kindness and moved into his house after theirs was demolished as a punishment for bothering the townspeople and Mickey wanted to help. It also turns out that they have fear of sweetness, which also helped Mickey get the ghosts to leave.
Video games [ ]
Mickey mania [ ].
The ghouls are featured as minor enemies in the video game at their mansion.
The Great Circus Mystery starring Mickey and Minnie [ ]
The ghosts (as in this game they are referred to as "the Ghosts") are minor characters in the game in which they seek Mickey and/or Minnie to have them stop Baron Pete since he kicked the ghosts out of their home in the 3rd level. They also appear at the end of the game to congratulate the player on defeating Pete and they join Mickey and the gang at the circus after Pete was defeated.
Epic Mickey [ ]
Since the Mad Doctor arrived in Lonesome Manor and the Pipe Organ went out of order, the Lonesome Ghosts settled into Bog Easy in the half-sunken Mark Twain Steamboat in the bayou on the outskirts. Mickey can choose to either help them with pranking the locals or helping the locals overcome their fears of the ghosts. If Mickey fixes the Pipe Organ while visiting Lonesome Manor , the ghosts will return home and give Mickey one of the missing pieces of Animatronic Donald as a reward.
Disney Parks [ ]
In Disneyland version of Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway , the ghosts occasionally appear in the mirror of the dresser (from their debut short) at the Mickey Through the Ears museum and can even interact with the propeller on the plane from Plane Crazy with a fireplace bellow.
- The inclusion of the Lonesome Ghosts in the Epic Mickey series and their connection to Lonesome Manor was inspired by early drafts of The Haunted Mansion featuring the Lonesome Ghosts in some capacity, with a "Lonesome Ghost" being proposed as a potential host for the attraction.
- Ian: He acts as the "self-appointed caretaker of Blot Alley and the Spatters" (described by Gremlin Gus) in Epic Mickey 2 .
- Screeching Sam
- In Disney Tsum Tsum , the Lonesome Ghosts appear as a non-playable Tsum and could be fought as a boss during the Mickey's Anniversary Film Collection event. They are represented by one single Tsum, and, unlike other boss Tsums that sometimes move around the screen, this Tsum disappears and reappears on a different location of the screen.

10 Mickey Cartoons to Watch Before Experiencing Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disneyland
by Ryan Choyeski , Digital Integration Manager, Disney Experiences
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disneyland Park officially opened on January 27, 2023
The attraction takes place in the el capitoon theater within mickey’s toontown — a land exclusive to the disneyland resort, the queue features a special exhibit created by the toontown hysterical society featuring costumes and props from popular mickey mouse films, shorts and tv series..
Mickey & Minnie’s Runway Railway is now open at Disneyland Park and, oh boy, the queue is packed full of Mickey Mouse cartoon Easter eggs and surprises around every corner! For a fan such as myself who grew up watching “Walt Disney Classics” Mickey cartoons on VHS and “ The Disney Afternoon ” cartoons in the ’90s, this new queue had me feeling like a kid again. It even features props from the newest era of “ A Mickey Mouse Cartoon ” shorts, which is the creative basis for the new trackless dark ride that will have you screaming “Potatoland!”
But in case you’re new to the series or want to brush up on the classics, I’ve compiled a list of 10 Mickey cartoons to watch that’ll help you better enjoy the creative details of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway queue at Disneyland Park.
Steamboat Willie (1928)
One of the first rooms you enter showcases some of the most iconic props from Mickey Mouse’s history of shorts and films – most noticeably, the steamboat helm from “Steamboat Willie.” Go ahead and give it a whirl because it’s the wheel deal!
Where to Watch: Enjoy Mickey Mouse’s debut cartoon, “Steamboat Willie”, on Walt Disney Animation Studios YouTube , Disney.com and Disney+ and see what made Walt’s little hero a movie star.
Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Fantasia (1940)
One of the most recognizable and largest displays of props comes from the short “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” featured in the full-length feature “Fantasia.” I highly recommend taking your time as you move through this portion of the queue; there are so many fun props to enjoy, including the Sorcerer’s hat that still has some magic left in it. Have your cameras ready!
Where to Watch: “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” can be viewed on Disney.com and “ Fantasia” is available to stream on Disney+ .
Lonesome Ghosts (1937)
In this short, fearless ghost hunters Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy —members of the “Ajax Ghost Exterminator” agency — meet their match when they are called to remove some pesky ghosts from the old McShiver Mansion. As you make your way around the room, you may notice a familiar phone and dresser that are haunted by the spirits of “Lonesome Ghosts.” If you stare into the mirror long enough, you might catch a few surprises and even notice the airplane (a prop from the 1928 black and white silent Mickey Mouse short “ Plane Crazy “) begin to take flight.
Where to Watch: A restored and remastered short version of “Lonesome Ghosts” can be viewed on Mickey Mouse YouTube and Disney.com . The complete original 9-minute version is available to stream on Disney+ .
Mickey’s Birthday Party (1942)
This short is jam-packed with music, dancing and volcanic cake batter as Minnie Mouse and the whole gang surprise Mickey with an unforgettable birthday party. Did you know that Mickey and Minnie’s birthday is November 18, 1928? Be on the lookout for his birthday cake and outfit on display. But beware! Though this cake certainly looks good enough to eat, it’s only a prop.
Where to Watch: A restored and remastered short version of “Mickey’s Birthday Party” can be viewed on Mickey Mouse YouTube and Disney.com . The complete original 9-minute version is available to stream on Disney+ .
Mickey and the Beanstalk (1947)
One of the more iconic scenes inside the queue is the magic beanstalk breaking through the ceiling of the attraction from “ Mickey And The Beanstalk ”. In a story based on the timeless adventures of “Jack and the Beanstalk,” Mickey, Donald and Goofy climb up into the sky to a place where everything is huge — the food, the castle and the fearsome giant named Willy who guards a beautiful golden harp!
Where to Watch: “Mickey And The Beanstalk” can be streamed on Disney+ as an animated featurette in “Disney Fun and Fancy Free.”
Pluto’s Christmas Tree (1952)
The next stop along your tour features no ordinary Christmas tree and holiday decorations; these are props from a short featuring the iconic duo Chip ‘n Dale! If you look closely on the fireplace mantle, you’ll notice the Santa candles where Dale tried to blend in without getting caught by Mickey as Pluto does his best to stop the chipmunks from ruining Christmas. In the end, this short shows us what Christmas is all about: spending time with loved ones and taking the surprises of the season in stride.
Where to Watch: “Pluto’s Christmas Tree” can be viewed on Disney.com and streamed on Disney+.
Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)
After passing costumes from an ‘80s disco party, you’ll notice a familiar desk and teddy bear from “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” which features many of Mickey’s friends — including a non-speaking appearance by Mr. Toad, who plays Mr. Fezziwig.
Where to Watch: This Christmas classic where Scrooge learns to embrace the spirit of the season can be streamed on Disney+ .
The Prince and the Pauper (1990)
Heading into the ’90s, you’ll find both of Mickey’s outfits from “ The Prince and the Pauper .” In this legendary tale, two boys who look exactly alike meet by chance and decide to switch places: a pauper named Mickey and the Crown Prince. Together, they must figure out how to save the kingdom from the evil Captain Pete who wants the throne for himself!
Where to Watch: “ The Prince and the Pauper” can be streamed on Disney+ .
Mickey Mouse Shorts – Potatoland (2013) Season 1, Episode 13
Possibly my favorite Mickey Mouse short of all time, “Potatoland” hits all the right notes for Disneyland fans. In a heartwarming tale of friendship, Mickey and Donald get to work making Goofy’s dream of seeing Potatoland — a potato-themed amusement park — come true.
As you near the concessions stand within the El CapiTOON Theater, you can’t miss the giant potato dressed as “President Spud.”
Where to Watch: “Potatoland” can be viewed on Mickey Mouse YouTube and streamed —along with all episodes of the newest “Mickey Mouse” shorts and “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” — on Disney+ .
Mickey Mouse Roadster Racers (2017)
Hot rod diggity dog! The next few props come from a variety of Disney Junior series of Mickey and friends cartoons. One particular series is “Mickey Mouse Roadster Racers” featuring Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Minnie and Daisy who run a garage in Hot Dog Hills as they get ready to compete with their transforming roadsters in races around town and around the world. I personally enjoyed “Mickey’s Perfecto Day” which stars The Three Caballeros. Buckle up for some laughs!
Where to Watch: “Mickey Mouse Roadster Racers” can be viewed on Disney Junior YouTube and streamed on the DisneyNOW app and Disney+ .
I can’t wait for you to experience Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, now open at Disneyland Park. It is truly a one-of-a-kind attraction and queue that honors Mickey and friends and fits perfectly into the overall theme of Mickey’s Toontown.
Have you had a chance to experience Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disneyland Park? Leave a comment letting me know your favorite part of the queue!

Cyclops Print Works Debuts 2 Spooky New Disney Prints for Halloween (Exclusive)
The Haunted Mansion and “The Lonesome Ghosts” come home
Cyclops Print Works is dropping two spooky new Disney prints, just in time for Halloween. They will send shivers down your spine (in the best way possible). And we’ve got all the details.
The first print is dedicated to Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion and comes courtesy of Eric Tan, a former designer for Disney Consumer Products and one of the most celebrated pop culture artists. His take on the Haunted Mansion is refreshing and new – he’s got the iconic ghosts from the attraction (including Madame Leota, the Caretaker and his Dog, the dueling ghosts and Constance the murderous bride) but puts them in unique scenarios (like Leota in the moon). And of course he had to put “Part of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California!” at the bottom of the print, which gives it the feel of a true attraction poster.
And the other print is J.J. Harrison’s take on “Lonesome Ghosts,” the 1937 animated short that saw Mickey, Donald and Goofy as ghost exterminators attempting to rid a house of some pesky poltergeists. Everything that made the original short so special is there (including the unforgettable design of the ghosts) but in Harrison’s distinctive art style.
Both prints will be available on the Cylcops Print Works site Wednesday at 10 a.m. PT. Full details below.
