முதல் பார்வை: லவ் ஸ்டோரி

வெவ்வேறு சமூகங்களைச் சார்ந்த இருவர் காதலித்தால், அதற்கு எதிர்ப்பு வந்தால், அந்த எதிர்ப்பைத் தாண்டி காதலர்கள் இணைய முடிவெடுத்தால், அப்போதும் பிரச்சினை வேறு வடிவில் முளைத்தால் அதுவே 'லவ் ஸ்டோரி'.

ரேவந்த் (நாக சைதன்யா) அப்பாவை இழந்து அம்மாவின் அரவணைப்பில் வளர்கிறார். வறுமையை வென்றெடுக்க வேண்டிய சூழல். நாம் கையேந்தும் நிலை மாறி, எல்லோருக்கும் கொடுக்கும் அளவுக்கு வளர வேண்டும் என்று அம்மா ஈஸ்வரிராவ் மகனுக்கு அறிவுறுத்துகிறார். கிராமத்திலிருந்து ஹைதராபாத்துக்குச் சென்று ஃபிட்னஸ் சென்டர் ஒன்றை நிறுவி நடத்தி வருகிறார் நாக சைதன்யா. அங்கு பயிற்சி பெற வரும் பெண்ணின் தோழியாக மௌனி (சாய் பல்லவி) வருகிறார். அவர் வேலை தேடி தோழியின் வீட்டில் தங்குகிறார். இந்நிலையில் நாக சைதன்யாவுக்கும், சாய் பல்லவிக்கும் அறிமுகம் ஏற்படுகிறது. நண்பர்கள் ஆகிறார்கள். சினிமாவின் எழுதப்பட்ட விதிப்படி காதலாகிக் கசிந்துருகி, சாதிப் பிரச்சினையால் கண்ணீர் மல்கி நிற்கிறார்கள். ஒரு முடிவைத் தீர்க்கமாக எடுக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால், வேறு ஒரு முடிவை எடுக்க வேண்டிய சூழல் நேரிடுகிறது.

அந்தச் சூழல் நேரிடக் காரணம் என்ன, சாதியைத் தாண்டி இணைந்தார்களா, அவர்கள் காதல் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்பட்டதா, கொஞ்சம் வசதியுடன் வாழும் சாய் பல்லவி ஏன் வேலை தேடி நகரத்துக்கு வருகிறார் போன்ற கேள்விகளுக்கு பதில் சொல்கிறது திரைக்கதை.

நாக சைதன்யாவை ரேவந்த் என்ற கதாபாத்திரமாக மட்டுமே பார்க்க முடிவது பெரிய பிளஸ். ஒரு சிறிய கிராமத்தில் ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட சமூகத்தின் பிரதிநிதியைச் சரியாகக் கண்முன் நிறுத்துகிறார். கிராமத்து இளைஞனின் அப்பழுக்கில்லாத உள்ளத்தையும் அப்படியே வெளிப்படுத்தி மனதில் ஒட்டிக்கொள்கிறார். டான்ஸில் அசத்தி, தன் ஃபிட்னஸ் சென்டரைப் பெரிய அளவுக்குக் கொண்டுபோக நினைப்பது, சாய் பல்லவியை பார்ட்னராக்குவது, அவருடனான மோதல்- ஊடல்- காதல் என அனைத்திலும் இயல்பாய் நடித்துள்ளார். நாயகனுக்கான சாகசக் காட்சிகள் துளியும் இல்லாத படத்தில், யதார்த்த நாயகனாய் வலம் வரும் விதம் அட போட வைக்கிறது.

சாய் பல்லவிதான் படத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய தூண். இயலாமை, ஏமாற்றம், பயம், தவிப்பு, கோபம், அழுகை என கலந்துகட்டி நடித்து ஸ்கோர் செய்கிறார். படத்தின் டான்ஸ் காட்சிகளில் வளைந்து நெளிந்து ஆச்சர்யப்படவைக்கிறார். அவரின் கண்கள் நிறையவே பேசுகின்றன. ஒட்டுமொத்த ஃபெர்பாமன்ஸில் வசீகரிக்கிறார். நாக சைதன்யாவுடன் நடனம் ஆடும்போது அவரை ஈஸியாக ஓவர் டேக் செய்து பிரமிப்பை ஏற்படுத்துகிறார்.

ராஜீவ் கனகலா எதிர்மறைக் கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கான சரியான வார்ப்பு. எரிச்சல் வரவழைக்கும் அளவுக்கு கதாபாத்திரத்தின் நோக்கத்தை நிறைவேற்றுகிறார். சாய் பல்லவியின் தாயாக தேவயானி ஒரே காட்சியில் அழுத்தமாகத் தடம் பதித்து நிற்கிறார். மகனை அதட்டி, அரவணைத்து, அறிவுறுத்தும் தடாலடி தாயாக ஈஸ்வரி ராவ் தேர்ந்த நடிப்பை வழங்கியுள்ளார். 'காலா' படத்தில் ஈஸ்வரி ராவின் கதாபாத்திரம் நீட்டிக்கப்பட்டால் எப்படி இருக்கும்? அப்படித்தான் இதில் நடித்துள்ளார்.

விஜய் சி.குமார் கிராமத்தின் அழகை, ஹைதராபாத் நகரத்தை பிரேமுக்குள் சிறைபிடித்துள்ளார். பவனின் இசையும், பின்னணியும் படத்துக்கு வலு சேர்க்கின்றன. பாடல்கள் அனைத்தும் ரசிக்க வைக்கின்றன. மார்த்தாண்ட், வெங்கடேஷின் எடிட்டிங் மட்டும் கொஞ்சம் நிதான கதியில் படம் செல்வதுபோன்ற உணர்வை அளிக்கிறது.

இயக்குநர் சேகர் கம்முலாவைப் பாராட்டியே ஆகவேண்டும். ரத்தம், வன்முறை, சண்டைக் காட்சிகள் என்று வலிந்து திணிக்கப்பட்ட காட்சிகள் என்று எதுவும் படத்தில் இல்லை. நாயக அம்சத்தைத் தூக்கிப் பிடிக்கவும் இல்லை. சாதியப் பிரச்சினையையும் தனி மெசேஜ் என்று சொல்லாமல் போகிற போக்கில் பதிய வைக்கிறார். அதிலும் அழுத்தத்தைத் தவறவிடவில்லை. செயற்கையான முடிவு என்றும் கட்டமைக்கவில்லை. காதலர்களின் உணர்வுகளைச் சரியாகக் கையாண்ட விதம் ஆஸம். திருப்பங்களில் நம்பிக்கையில்லாமல் திரைக்கதைக்கு ஏற்ற வகையில் இயல்பான முடிவையே கொடுத்துள்ளார். அதுதான் படத்துக்கு ஆதார பலம் என்று சொல்லலாம்.

ஆனால், படத்தின் திரைக்கதை கொஞ்சம் இழுவையாய் நீள்வதுதான் நெருடல். நாக சைதன்யாவின் பக்கத்து வீட்டுப் பாட்டி எப்படி சாய் பல்லவி வீட்டுத் திருமண நிகழ்வில் பாட்டு பாடுகிறார், ராஜீவ் கனகலா குறித்து நாக சைதன்யாவிடம் சொல்வதற்கு முன்பே ஒரு வாய்ப்பு ஏற்பட்டபோதும் சாய் பல்லவி ஏன் சொல்லாமல் தவிர்க்கிறார் போன்ற சில கேள்விகள் மட்டுமே எழுகின்றன. ராஜீவ் கனகலாவை எதிர்கொள்ளும் நாக சைதன்யா காட்சியில் கிராபிக்ஸ் சரியில்லை. சில காட்சிகளை கிரீன் மேட்டில் எடுத்தது அப்பட்டமாகத் தெரிகிறது. ஆனால், இவையெல்லாம் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ளக் கூடிய, சிறிய குறைகளே.

இவற்றைத் தவிர்த்து சினிமாவுக்கான எந்த செயற்கைத்தனங்களையும் எட்டிப்பார்க்க விடாமல், சமரசம் செய்து கொள்ளாமல் காதலின் நேர்த்தியை, ஆழத்தை, உறவுப் பிணைப்பை மெதுமெதுவாக நமக்குள் கடத்திய விதத்திலும், ஃபீல் குட் மூவி என்று சொல்லும் அளவுக்கு நல்ல காதல் திரைப்படத்தைக் கொடுத்த விதத்திலும் 'லவ் ஸ்டோரி' முக்கியத்துவம் பெறுகிறது.

• Music Review

'Love Story' hit the screens today. Produced by Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP, the film has opened to big collections. Here is our review of the movie.

Revanth (Naga Chaitanya) and Mounica (Sai Pallavi) hail from Armoor in Telangana. They cross paths in Hyderabad where Revanth is running a fledgling zumba training center that is struggling to attract customers. Mounica's natural dancing skills make Revanth woo her to join him. They hit the jackpot in business and also fall in love with each other. But since Mounica hails from an upper caste family and Revanth is a Dalit, caste issues crop up. What ensues is a series of struggles and answers to questions about Mounica's psychological issues.

The film begins with the childhood episodes of Revanth, whose mother (Easwari Rao) motivates him to turn the pyramid upside down. "We must be in a position to give, not take from others," she exhorts. Cut to the present, Revanth is too middle-class to honour the rent of his training center in Hyderabad. When he discovers Mounica's talent, it is as if he has found his angel.

Sekhar Kammula doesn't introduce the characters in a regular way. We see Naga Chaitanya living in a small room with fellow bachelors. On the other hand, Sai Pallavi's introduction scene has her haggling with the auto driver. Her eyes spin and she collapses while giving job interviews. Her mental issues haven't been made light of.

We see that she is fascinated by Zumba because she has a natural talent for dancing. The Revanth-Mounica exchange looks but the undercurrent of romance is not dramatized. It's kept slice-of-life.

Mounica's equations with her Babai (played by Rajeev Kanakala) are a motif the film plays out from time to time. It's not until 'Saranga Dariya' is over in the pre-climax phase that its arc is not completed.

The love story may not be fast-paced, but the issues that are thrown into the mix are definitely not regular. The resolution is also not simplistic or cliched. Kammula makes Revanth and Mounica go through an emotional catharsis before the denouement.

The placement of songs is something Kammula is an expert at. 'Ay Pilla' is coalesced into the narrative, while the lyrics of 'Nee Chitram Chusi' make better sense when watched with the story. Debutant composer Pawan Ch's music is excellent, complemented in no small measure by cinematographer Vijay C Kumar's knack.

Easwari Rao, as the male lead's mother, is not a prop showing helplessness. She has her say in the story. Her son talks about his business plans with her. Rajeev Kanakala, who plays Mounica's suspiciously domineering Babai, has a character arc of his own.

The interval block is unconventional, so also the scene where Mounica betrays her internalized prejudice against the Other. These and many other scenes show that Kammula's understanding is not superficial. He doesn't portray the caste barriers in a lifeless manner. Although there are elements and situations that we have seen before, they acquire an aura of their own in the universe of Kammula's cinema.

'Love Story' is an important film that portrays its organic love story, the question of caste-based discrimination, and the social evil of abuse in an engrossing manner.

Love Story Review: லவ் ஸ்டோரில லவ் இருந்ததா? படம் எப்படி? - தமிழில் ரிவ்யூ

காதலிலும் சரி, சாதிய பிரச்சனைகளை எதிர்கொள்ளும்போதும் சரி ரேவந்த் - மெளனிகா இடையே இருக்கும் அத்தனை பாசிடீவ் மொமண்ட்ஸ்களுக்கும் மத்தியில் எழும் சில நெகடீவ் அலைகளை கொஞ்சம் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம்..

நிசாமாபாத்தில் உள்ள ஜூம்பா ஃபிட்னெஸ் செண்டர் பிஸினஸை அடுத்த கட்டத்துக்கு எடுத்துச் செல்ல முயற்சி செய்து வரும் ரேவந்த் (நாக சைதன்யா) , இன்ஜினியரிங் படித்துவிட்டு, படிப்புக்கு ஏற்ற நல்ல சம்பளத்துடன் வேலையை தேடி அலையும் மெளனிகா (சாய் பல்லவி). இருவரும் சந்தித்து கொள்கின்றனர். மெளனிகாவை பார்த்ததும் காதல் ரேவந்த்துக்கு, பழகப்பழக காதல் ஏற்படுகிறது மெளனிகாவிற்கு. ஆனால், பொருளாதர சுமை, ஊர் பிரச்சனை, ஜாதி, மதம் என தடைகளைக் கடந்து ஒன்று சேர்ந்தார்களா இல்லை என்பதுதான் ‘லவ் ஸ்டோரி’.

ரேவந்த்தும், மெளனிகாவும் சந்தித்து கொள்வது முதல் அவர்களிடத்தில் நட்பு மலர்ந்து, பிஸினஸ் பார்ட்னர்களாக மாறி, நட்பு காதலாய் உருவெடுக்கும் மாற்றத்தை தனது வழக்கமான ஸ்டைலில் இயக்குனர் சேகர் கம்முலா இந்த படத்திலும் யதார்த்தமாக காண்பித்திருக்கிறார். அழகான விஷுவல்ஸ், ஆங்காங்கே இதமான பாடல்கள், செண்டிமெண்ட் வசனங்கள் என படத்தின் முதல் பாதியிலேயே ஒரு பக்கா ’ஃபீல் குட் மூவி’ ஃபீல் வந்துவிடுகிறது. 

ஆனால், ஒரு கமர்ஷியல் படத்திற்கு தேவையான ஹீரோ, ஹீரோயின், காதல், செண்டிமெண்ட் என அனைத்து அம்சங்களையும் கொண்டு போகிற போக்கில் சில சமூகப் பிரச்சனைகளையும் சொல்லிவிட்டு போகிறார் இயக்குனர். சாதி மறுப்பு திருமணம் ; வீட்டிலேயே, குடும்பத்திற்குள்ளே பெண் குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஏற்படும் பாலியல் பிரச்சனை - இந்த இரண்டு சமூகப் பிரச்சனைகளைப் பற்றியும் பேசி இருக்கும் ‘லவ் ஸ்டோரி’, வெறும் ரேவந்த் - மெளனிகாவின் வாழ்க்கை கதையாக கடந்துவிட்டது போல இருந்தது படத்தில் ப்ளஸ், மைனல் இரண்டுமே. படம் பார்த்தவர்களில் எத்தனை பேருக்கு நிஜத்தில் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் சாதிய பிரச்சனைகள், அதை சார்ந்த புரிதல் உண்டாகி இருக்கும் என்பது சந்தேகமே.  

படத்தின் இரண்டாம் பாதியில், சாதிய பிரச்சனைகளை எதிர்கொண்டு திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ள திட்டமிடாமல், வேறு நாட்டிற்கு தப்பி ஓடுவது பற்றியும், அதற்கு ப்ளான் செய்யும் ‘கோல்மால்’ திட்டங்களும் கொஞ்சம் தவறாக வழிநடத்துவது போல இருந்தது. படம் முழுவதும் “நான் செத்திடுவேன், செத்திர்லாம்” என நெகடீவ் வசனங்கள் ஆங்காங்கா வந்துபோகின்றன. காதலிலும் சரி, சாதிய பிரச்சனைகளை எதிர்கொள்ளும்போதும் சரி ரேவந்த் - மெளனிகா இடையே இருக்கும் அத்தனை பாசிடீவ் மொமண்ட்ஸ்களுக்கும் மத்தியில் இந்த நெகடீவ் அலைகளை கொஞ்சம் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம்.

நடிகர்கள் நாக சைதன்யா, சாய் பல்லவி (தியேட்டரில் பல்லவிக்கு மட்டும்தான் ஸ்பெஷல் விசில்கள் பறந்தன, அவரது நடனத்திற்கு டபுள் விசில்கள்), ரேவந்த் அம்மாவாக கஸ்தூரி ராவ், மெளனிகா அம்மாவாக தேவயானி, இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்த  உட்டேஜ் என அனைவரும் சிறப்பாக நடித்துள்ளனர். நாக சைதன்யா, தனது கரியர் பெஸ்ட் பெர்ஃபாமென்ஸை கொடுத்துள்ளார். எனினும், தனது இயல்பான நடிப்பாலும், அசத்தல் நடனத்தாலும் ரசிகர்களின் கவனத்தை ஈர்ப்பது சாய் பல்லவிதான். 

ஓடிடி மெட்டிரீயலாக இல்லாமல், தியேட்டரில் பார்க்கலாம் என ‘டிக்’ மார்க் வாங்குகிறது ‘லவ் ஸ்டோரி’. ஒரு ஃபீல் குட் லவ் ஃபீலுக்காக, ஒரு முறை இந்த லவ் ஸ்டோரியை பார்க்கலாம்.

20 Best Tamil Romances Of All Time

It's hard to find a mainstream Tamil film that doesn't have a romantic track. High octane action in films like Ghajini and Kaakha Kaakha are emotionally grounded in solid romantic tracks. And even a comedy like Michael Madana Kama Rajan allows three of its four Kamal Haasans brief romances and in Kadhalikka Neramillai , Nagesh's character gets his own comic romantic track. In films like Vaazhvey Maayam or Idhayam the romance simply sets off high tragedy. Most of these films aren't centered around romance. And even when they are, few stay strictly true to genre. But films like Kalyana Parisu and Kadhal Kottai create a drama around romance. Kanda Naal Mudhal  and Pyaar Prema Kaadhal are romantic comedies. And a romantic film like Punnagai Mannan has elements of both comedy and drama. 

The following is a chronological journey through the best romances in Tamil — spanning almost 60 years — from Kalyana Parisu to Vijay Sethupathi -starrer 96 , and passing through classics such as Punnagai Mannan, Alaipayuthey and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa .

Kalyana Parisu (1959)

Director: Sridhar

In Kalyana Parisu, director Sridhar's debut as a director, he gives up conventions like ornate dialogues and a static camera to create an emotional and tragic love triangle between Baskar ( Gemini Ganesan ) and two sisters, Vasanthi ( Saroja Devi ) and Geetha (Vijayakumari). Vasanthi decides to give up her love for Geetha. This classic love triangle solution where a friend, brother or sister sacrifices their love for another continues to echo in films like Kadhal Desam (1996), Jeans (1998) and Ninaithen Vandhai (1998). 

But Vasanthi's sacrifice in Kalyana Parisu  is just the beginning of a series of events that continue to place her in close proximity to Baskar. Whether you can digest the film's tragic ending or not, it renders the film's title superbly poetic. More than the major drama of the film, Kalyana Parisu is probably better remembered today for its terrific comedy track where Thangavelu fakes it with his wife that he's employed at Mannar & Co, a fake shipping company he invents.

Anbe Vaa (1966)

Director: A. C. Tirulokchandar

MGR's filmography took an unexpected turn with Anbe Vaa, in which he plays the famous millionaire tycoon, Balu, who is forced to take a break from all the hard work and philanthropy to keep his health. He takes a vacation to Shimla where he stays in his own bungalow but under a different identity. There, he meets Geetha (Saroja Devi) who falls in love with him over the course of the MS Viswanathan's classics 'Rajavin Paarvai' and 'Love Birds' at the beginning of the film when she doesn't know who he is. Again, near the end, when he reveals who he really is, she needs to fall in love with him again.

There is, of course, the customary climax fight where MGR uses chairs as weapons in a dining room, but really, that's only a device to settle the quarrel between Balu and Geetha. This film is MGR Lite. Only the year before, he had starred in the blockbuster action-adventure film Ayirathil Oruvan. It's also as far as his image would allow him to get into Sivaji Ganesan's Ooty Varai Uravu and Kalatta Kalyanam zone.

Nenjil Or Aalayam (1962)

Nenjil Or Aalayam  is an emotionally-rich film with an interesting variant of the love triangle: genteel and sophisticated Dr. Murali (Kalyan Kumar) finds his girlfriend, Seetha (Devika), already married when he returns abroad from his studies. He devotes himself to cancer research as way of forgetting her. But  he ends up treating her husband, Venu (Muthuraman), who has a potentially terminal condition. This is very similar to how events in director Sridhar's earlier film,  Kalyana Parisu, put the unfortunate couple together when it's the last thing they want.

Murali and Seetha are forced to revisit their relationship. But they have hope, only if Venu passes away. Sridhar mines this ambiguous situation for melodrama because both Murali and Seetha want to prioritize what is right (Venu's health) over what is desirable (Murali and Seetha getting together). Viswanathan-Ramamurthy's classic 'Engirundhaalum Vaazhga', sung by AL Raghavan, has become the template for dignified, unrequited romance, where the hero philosophically wishes the best for his ex with just enough self-pity to make us feel he's invested it.

Nenjathai Killathe (1980)

Director: Mahendran

On the face of it, Nenjathai Killlathe is a love triangle between Ram (Mohan), Pratap (Pratap Pothen) and Viji (Suhasini). Ram and Viji like each other but she ends up getting married to Pratap. But Nenjathai Killathe is not so much about the plot as the unrushed, naturalistic portrait of its characters and the relationships they tentatively explore.

For example, take the really quiet gem from Ilaiyaraaja, 'Paruvame'. It sounds like the voice in your head that automatically plays a tune to match the rhythm of your jog. The song plays in the background while Ram and Viji, who've only recently met, are out on a jog. They pass by a man neck deep in a lake — singing. And they break into spontaneous laughter. Mahendran chooses this understated and unassuming manner of showing two people go through the awkward process of bonding by discovering things they both enjoy. The rest of the film, too, gets this nuanced treatment, and so, it never plays out as a typical romantic drama. Like in all love triangles, Ram, Pratap and Viji keep running into each other however hard they try not to. But the psychological detailing helps you look past minor tropes of that era.

Alaigal Oivathillai (1981)

Director: Bharathiraja

Bharathiraja's Alaigal Oivathillai is an endearing story of innocent and intense teenage love that cuts across religious divides. Ilaiyaraaja's background score often elevates the visuals (and functional acting) and gives the film a certain moral vitality. For example, there's a scene that builds up to the song 'Aayiram Thamarai' where Vichu (Karthik) and Mary (Radha) awkwardly stare at each other as if in a tableau. And they slowly walk towards each other to hug a tree with their names carved on it. That's what you see if you're watching on mute. 

But along with the score and the song it leads up to, you feel you're watching a slick depiction of the intensity and exuberance of teenage romance. It also makes the climax where Vichu and Mary are ready to even drop their religions to be together feel plausible.

Muthal Mariyathai (1985)

In Muthal Mariyathai , an aging Malaichami ( Sivaji Ganesan ) lives in a loveless marriage with Ponnatha (Vadivukkarasi). Theirs is a marriage of ultimate social compulsion: Ponnatha got pregnant out of wedlock and had to be married off to someone, but preferably a relative. Malaichami weds her to 'save her honour' but they never get over their instinctive resentment for each other. Into this backdrop of a relationship that's plainly just transactional, Bharathiraja introduces Radha's Kuyili, the childlike, almost-angelic boatwoman of the village. And what you get is a subdued, dignified and effective romance between Malaichami and Kuyili. 

Sivaji's performance in scenes between Malaichami and Kuyili eases around their rustic banter, but he also gets scenes that are appropriate for his melodramatic prowess, like the scene where he confronts Ponnatha about her past pregnancy.  There's also muted masculinity in the character and performance: he's a village headman disrespected in his own house, a man who finds love only too late in life, a man who tried to save his wife's honour only to end both their lives in tragedy.

Punnagai Mannan (1986)

Director: K. Balachander

The scene where lovers Sethu ( Kamal Haasan ), wearing white, and Ranjani (Rekha), in yellow, jump off a cliff so they can at least die together has probably the most haunting image in Punnagai Mannan . You'd think things are as bad as they could get for them, but they go uncomfortably awry when Sethu survives after Ranjani dies: he's now failed to both live and die with her. This kind of making something just perfect worse twice over is what ironically makes this film with a title 'punnagai mannan (king of smiles)' work.

The film has amazing music by Ilaiyaraaja; the iconic theme music creates a sense of perfection in the relationship between Sethu and Revathi's Malini. It begins as Sethu kicks off an old-fashioned tape recorder and gracefully goes under the piano and all around the room in a dance, as Malini watches. And as the scene ends, Ilaiyaraaja swaps in electronic instruments with an orchestral section that plays a duet, just in time for Malini and Sethu to dance in tandem. It's just perfect and also leaves you with an ominous fear for this relationship, too.

Kadhal Kottai (1996)

Director: Agathiyan

You'd think with access to communication today, Kathal Kottai wouldn't have aged well. Parts of it haven't, like the comedy tracks and the melodramatic family angle. But the quaint idea that two people can fall in love through just their letters without ever having seen each other still works. That's because Suriya ( Ajith ) and Kamali (Devayani) organically fall in love as external factors around them, like Suriya's boss and Kamali's weird brother-in-law, make their growing attachment appear gradually more necessary and plausible to us. 

Suriya is far away from home in Rajasthan and Kamali is in a home that she's forced to leave eventually. In this context, it's not hard to imagine that they could become each other's happy places in their minds. The tension between their psychological attachment and physical remoteness is released in the now legendary climax. It's a climax you expect, of course, but after all the pressure built up in our minds when Suriya and Kamali are separated, it feels like a terrible relief.

Kadhalukku Mariyadhai (1997)

Director: Fazil

Kadhalukku Mariyadhai and Kadhal Kottai both have memorable endings, and for similar reasons. If Kadhal Kottai was about whether two loners who've only written to each other would ever meet (and they do by coincidence in the end), Kadhalukku Mariyadhai is about whether Jeeva ( Vijay ) and Mini ( Shalini ) who've fallen in love after a chance meeting can stay together until the end in spite of family pressure.

The film ends melodramatically with the families that belong to different religions, letting Jeeva and Mini be together. But it starts off as a cool romance between Jeeva and Mini in a bookshop where they stumble upon the same book, 'Love And Love Only', the greatest romance novel that every Tamilian knows but never reads. Ilaiyaraaja's songs like  'O Baby', 'Ennai Thalaata', and ' Oru Pattam Poochi' defined a low-key romantic sound of that period  and ran parallel with the sound AR Rahman was creating in films like, say, in Minsara Kanavu released in the same year.

Minsara Kanavu (1997)

Director: Rajiv Menon

Priya (Kajol), the jaded daughter of a rich businessman, is moved by the Lord's Spirit to become a nun. This disappoints her father as he wants to get her married to Thomas (Arvind Swamy), the son of his affluent friend. Thomas hires Deva (Prabhu Deva) as his counsellor in love and an unexpected love triangle is set up between the three of them. Minsara Kanavu avoids the moral angle of the situation by putting it in perspective: irrespective of whom Priya marries, she'd be breaking her vow to God, anyway. 

The love triangle is treated with a light, amoral touch and a big part of how the film manages to get this treatment right is through AR Rahman's quirky and original music. 'Strawberry Kanne' and 'Maana Madurai' push the limits of how much you could tweak a song structure while keeping it accessible. 

Alaipayuthey (2000)

Director: Mani Ratnam

Few Tamil films have realistically explored the complications of a relationship after marriage. Typically in our films, marriage is the goal of love and lovers spend all their energy convincing someone to let them be together. In Alaipayuthey , Karthik (Madhavan) and Shakti (Shalini) have only themselves to convince. You'd think they're going to be okay once they get married secretly and live secret lives that their parents don't know about.

But it's the physical closeness and availability that causes them to have doubts about whether they took it too far, too soon. Since they're in a secret marriage, there's the temptation to break everything off with little consequence. Mani Ratnam's earlier film, Mouna Ragam, shows the conflict between a married couple who're unsure about each other. OK Kanmani is about what happens to a couple when they have time to decide on marriage. Alaipayuthey is what happens when it's neither here nor there. The film has impeccable cinematography by PC Sreeram and AR Rahman's music grounds this emotionally rich story in urban coolth.

Kaadhal (2004)

Director: Balaji Sakthivel

Kaadhal , as the title suggests plainly and directly, is about love. But it's also meant in an ironic sense. With a superb soundtrack by Joshua Sridhar, Kaadhal starts off with the ancient Tamil cinema trope: a poor, uneducated boy, Murugan ( Bharath ) falls in love with Aishwarya (Sandhya) who is from an affluent family. Naturally, they're forced to elope and get married. 

That's when Kaadhal gets gritty and portrays how intense-but-poorly-thought-out teenage relationships could be: right from the problems an upper-class girl faces when she sees harsh reality for the first time, to Murugan's realization near the end that love will not conquer all. Kaadhal doesn't judge the couple because their love for each other always feels genuine. But it holds stark realities (of class and status) against them and forces us to judge idealistic love as often not worth the complicated pain of pursuing it.

Kanda Naal Mudhal (2005)

Director: Priya V

You'd think Kanda Naal Mudhal is a light romcom but — right under its froth — it does a whole lot of subverting without making a virtue out of it. It's a typical rom com, ticking off familiar items on the checklist: Krishna (Prasanna) and Ramya (Laila) hate each other at first only to fall in love later, there's an America mappillai who is a threat for Krishna, the couple's ego gets in their way and a climax happens at an airport. But each of these points play out in unexpected ways and the film elevates itself cleverly out of these tropes.

With Yuvan Shankar Raja's amazing music ('Panu Thuli', 'Merke Merke', 'Koo Koovena') and cinematography by PC Sreeram, Kanda Naal Mudhal excavated from underground a generation of romance lovers snowed under intense, star-driven romances of the late 90s. It's one of the few Tamil romcoms where the comedy isn't just one-liners papered over a romantic drama but instead rises organically from the action between Krishna and Ramya.

7/G Rainbow Colony (2004)

Director: Selvaraghavan

There's Selvaraghavan's typical raw and conflict-heavy romance in 7/G Rainbow Colony . But it's probably one of his most romantic films because it takes to the extreme the belief that love can change anyone for the better. It's almost Biblical in it's veneration of the female for her ability to redeem lost and aimless Selvaraghavan protagonists. The film feels tentatively hopeful when Anita (Sonia Agarwal) falls in love with Kadhir (Ravi Krishna) before unleashing a psychological mess: Anita wants to sleep with Kadhir before she marries a person of her parents' choice and when Kadhir gets even more attached to her, she thinks he's doing it just for the sex. 

After reducing love from a possibility (Anita is going to save Kadhir's life) to a mess (Anita and Kadhir quarrel about sex), Selvaraghavan elevates it back into an ideal, romantic love that transcends human limitations, but that's in a twisted way. Kadhir continues his relationship with Anita in the end, but only in a dark and remote sense. But in Selvaraghavan's world, it counts as a happy ending. Yuvan's 'Kan Pesum Varthaigal' from the film must be one of the earliest songs written for the soup boy demographic, much before 'Why This Kolaveri'.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010)

Director: Gautham Vasudev Menon

Gautham Menon's films have always had strong romantic tracks. But Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa was his first serious romance. The first thing that strikes you, perhaps even before the romance and prepares you for it, is the film's music by AR Rahman and cinematography by Manoj Paramahamsa. Jesse ( Trisha ) is a Malayali Syrian Catholic and Karthik ( Simbu ) is a Tamil Hindu; religion is the reason why they cannot be together. Thirty years after Alaigal Oivathillai, romance appears to have become deeper, more mature. But lovers appear to be getting increasingly skeptical about social approval.

If Alaigal Oivathillai ends with defiant lovers throwing off the religious symbols, in Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, they fight for parental approval in the climax. Jesse doesn't even want to bother. The climax is simply about accepting both the realness of love they have for each other and the realities of their lives. But that's not what the film is really about on a scene-to-scene basis: it's about the finicky dynamic between Karthik and Jesse, a couple who appear made for each other but ironically not meant to be around each other. In Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa , love is a feeling that has a life of its own and not a means to an end.

Attakathi (2012)

Director: Pa. Ranjith

Dinakaran (Dinesh) is a loser in Pa. Ranjith's debut Attakathi, whose hapless romantic efforts progressively bring back poorer results. In fact, the film is romantic only in the sense that the Dinakaran is eager to strike up a romance with someone, somehow. But each time, he gets absolutely nowhere. Like the title suggests, he's a 'faker' who feels he can be a consummate boyfriend, and yet cannot get any girl to like him. The film follows his increasingly futile attempts. Every time Dinakaran is rejected by someone, he swiftly acknowledges the hollowness of his love for that girl and moves on to the next. It's a celebration of the kind of romance that doesn't strictly need two people cooperating.

With terrific music by Santhosh Narayanan ('Aasai Oru Pulveli', 'Nadukadalula Kappala'), the film strikes a superbly poignant tone in 'Vazhi Parthirundhen' near the film's end. Dinakaran is waiting at night to elope with his 'girlfriend' before realizing he's been duped once again. Far from a loser, you begin to see Dinakaran as at least mock-heroic. Not a kaththi, but at least an attakathi. 

Raja Rani (2013)

Director: Atlee

Raja Rani must be one of the biggest romantic hits in recent times with great music by GV Prakash Kumar and a cast made of Arya, Nayanthara, Nazriya Nazim, and Jai. It begins as a kind of a homage to Mouna Ragam, where there is a married couple who hate each other. Only here, both John (Arya) and Regina ( Nayanthara ) have a past in which they've lost someone they loved. Regina believes that her college boyfriend, Muthuraman (Jai), is now dead, while John's girlfriend had passed away in an accident. Now that these two have told each other that they are still in love with other dead people, how could they possibly move on?

Atlee organically lets warmth build up between John and Regina before a big, melodramatic ending at the airport with an emotional twist: Regina unexpectedly meets Muthuraman at the airport. She now believes that he is married, just as she once believed he was dead.

Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum (2016)

Director: Nalan Kumarasamy

A remake of South Korean film  My Dear Desperado, Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum is a mature romantic story. But for all its swagger in Santhosh Narayanan's 'Pangali', the film ends as a soft tragedy. It sets itself up with the essentials of a romance: two people stuck with each other due to circumstances slowly develop an admiration for each other that goes beyond their first impressions. But Nalan Kumarasamy spends the rest of the film showing us why that's not enough in the real world where people are far more complex than they are in films.

Kathiravan (Vijay Sethupathy) is someone hoping to receive a tiny promotion in his criminal gang for his services to them, but that appears unlikely. He gets stuck to his life as an out-of-work but mildly respected gangster. Yazhini (Madonna Sebastian), an IT professional, is temporarily stuck with Kathiravan due to problems with her family. Clearly, the two have nothing in common except their physical proximity. But soon, they start being there for each other. But what would happen to one person if the other didn't need them anymore? In another film, the climax would have united Kathiravan and Yazhini. Here, though they look genuinely happy to see each other, they don't even rush to embrace. But they don't seem to have given up either.  Kadhalum Kadandhu Podum is a quirky and understated romantic gem with none of the typical romance of our films, and that makes it special.

Pyaar Prema Kaadhal (2018)

Director: Elan

Even if you think the climax of Pyaar Prema Kaadhal is tweaked a bit too far to make the coming together of Sree ( Harish Kalyan ) and Sindhuja (Raiza Wilson) more socially acceptable, director Elan still takes the idea of a live-in-relationship in a city like Chennai and finds a way of making it natural. He keeps in the background that Sree and Sindhuja are an unmarried couple by keeping their emotional conflict constantly going: while they have to deal with the logistics of a live-in-relationship, the film is really about whether Sree and Sindhuja are ready to commit. 

Unlike unmarried couples who live apart, they don't spend all their time conspiring ways to meet each other, and that lets their relationship leaven to a point where they begin to have natural doubts about whether they're right for each other. It distracts you from their implausible live-in set up and focuses on, for the most part, on more interesting questions: once Sree and Sindhuja are physically together but not yet tied down by marriage, what's next for them? Is romance after marriage different from romance without one?

Director: C. Premkumar  

96 is almost entirely a recollection of lost romance, a bit like Autograph in that sense . Ram ( Vijay Sethupathi ) and Janu ( Trisha ) 'break up' in school, never to meet again, until Ram calls for a school reunion ages later. Ram assumes that Janu hated him while she assumes the reverse. If you thought the film was about them rekindling their lost romance, it's not even the zone that director Premkumar is going for. He strips the film of melodrama and that makes 96 a simple and immersive film that creates deeply emotional moments without forcing you to choke into tears. 

96 is not really about a possible relationship between Ram and Janu. It's about the romance that could have existed between them in the past as we see them interact today. Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha turn in terrific performances and create great moments that feel lived: like when Janu tells Ram that she had mistaken him for a stalker or even a lighter moment like when Ram mimes the words ' yamunai aatrile ' to get Janu to sing it for him. But much like the relationship between Ram and Janu, the film stays in a clean, emotional medium that's grounded in realism. Set to Govind Vasantha's amazing music and score, it's a simple nostalgia that resists becoming melodrama.

  Meet Shariza Othman, a big fan of Tamil movies. She has amassed over 26,000 ardent followers on her Facebook page, where she writes movie reviews in Malay

  Speaking to SAYS, the 43-year-old believes that movies are the best medium for artists to convey messages to society because people are more easily entertained through visuals compared to books or novels.

  "Through movies, viewers can learn the language, customs, and culture of a community. Movies also allow viewers to take lessons from the issues depicted in their daily lives," she explained.

  "Moreover, through movies, filmmakers honestly reveal the flaws in the administration, police institutions, and their courts. Their noble efforts are greatly appreciated by society," she added.

  Shariza first fell in love with South Indian cinema, specifically Tamil movies, after graduating from university in 2004

  During that time, while looking for a job, she spent her day watching Tamil movies aired on RTM's channels. Before that, she enjoyed Bollywood movies.

  "I transitioned to South Indian movies because I saw that Tamil movies tend to focus on family themes and depict the real life of the community," she said.

  She also appreciated the popular comedy elements in movies of that era.

  The first Tamil movie that Shariza watched was Maanasthan , which R. Sarathkumar starred. But it was comedian Vadivelu who left an indelible mark on her

  As she continued watching more Tamil movies, she started writing synopses to help friends decide if a movie was worth watching.

  Over the years, Shariza noted that South Indian movies have gradually evolved with better cinematography techniques, quality acting, and improved scriptwriting with more surprises. Much of it is largely due to critics who pushed filmmakers to experiment with newer works and styles.

  The first Tamil movie that Shariza watched was 'Maanasthan', which starred comedian Vadivelu (left) and R. Sarathkumar.

  Shariza said she is happy to see Tamil movies still uphold good moral values. She is also glad to see the South Indian film industry advancing to the point it now rivals Hollywood

  At home, while noting the advancement in Malaysian cinema, Shariza feels local filmmakers can take a leaf from South Indian movies.

  "Malaysian filmmakers should learn from the creative techniques of South Indian writers, who don't just tell love stories and family feuds but also present many creative plots, especially in crime and thriller genres," she said. 

  Shariza hopes that the Malaysian film industry becomes more open and creative without touching on racial and religious issues.

  NEW DELHI (AP) — When Kamala Harris was sworn in as vice president in the U.S., residents in her maternal family’s ancestral village in southern India watched in real time, setting off fireworks, holding up portraits of her and wishing her a long life.

  But, four years later, as she works to become the Democratic nominee for president after President Joe Biden ended his campaign, reaction across the country has been more muted. While some residents in the capital, New Delhi, expressed pride when asked about her this week, a handful wondered who she was.

  At least partially, that could reflect how Harris — who is also Black, with a father born in Jamaica — has treated her origins.

  

  “Harris doesn’t wear her Indian roots on her sleeve, choosing instead to emphasize her Jamaican heritage,” Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center, said.

  As vice president, she has deployed stories of her ties to India at key moments — at times light-heartedly — but her policy portfolio has been more domestic and did not focus on relations with India, he said.

  In June last year, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a state visit to Washington, Harris spoke emotionally about her ties to her late mother Shyamala Gopalan’s country of birth. She credited her grandfather P.V. Gopalan, who was a civil servant, with teaching her about what democracy means as they walked hand-in-hand on a beach in his home state of Tamil Nadu.

  

  These lessons, she said, “first inspired my interest in public service … and have guided me ever since.”

  She also talked about her mother’s influence — and how she discovered her “love of good idli,” eliciting laughter from the crowd with her reference to a dish of steamed rice dumplings, a staple in southern India.

  Sumanth Raman, a political commentator in Tamil Nadu, said there was excitement when she was named the VP nominee, “but after that, there’s not been a great deal of enthusiasm.”

  Since Sunday, when Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris, she has hardly featured in media reports in the state, he said.

  “The coverage has been more about Joe Biden dropping out, that’s what has grabbed headlines here,” Raman said.

  Beyond a smattering of references, analysts say Harris hasn’t tapped her Indian identity heavily.

  Today, few members of her extended family remain in India. Other than the trips during her childhood, Harris hasn’t visited the country much — and not since she became vice president, another reason that could explain why her candidacy hasn’t resonated widely in the country yet.

  Still, if Harris becomes the Democratic nominee, it would be a first for a South Asian American — and a sign of just how far the diaspora has come in the U.S., Kugelman said.

  Harris and a slew of other political personalities with roots in India — from Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy to Usha Vance — have become household names in the U.S. and their rise has put a spotlight on the country, beyond the cliches of Bollywood and Indian cuisine, he added.

  But the impact of a potential Harris presidency would be much greater for American politics and the Indian American community than for India-U.S. ties, experts say.

  “When Indians look at Kamala Harris, they’re looking at an American official more than someone of Indian origin,” said Happymon Jacob, a professor of diplomacy and disarmament studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

  That she was vice president did not have a substantive impact on India-U.S. ties, which are expected to grow over shared concerns about China regardless of who wins the November election, he said.

  Modi, for instance, was feted with a glitzy state visit last year hosted by Biden, where both leaders affirmed that ties between the two countries were thriving. But the Indian leader was also close to former President Donald Trump, who received an adulatory reception when he visited India in 2020 as more than 100,000 people packed into a cricket stadium to see him.

  “So I think there is a reality check in India, that these things don’t really matter at the end of the day,” Jacob added.

  Even if a Harris presidency is unlikely to affect policy toward India or carry geopolitical implications, for Hindi literature professor Shivaji Shinde, it would still be a historic and meaningful moment for the nation.

  The “United States is the most powerful country in the world. If they choose an Indian-origin person as their president, then it will be a huge moment for India and every Indian would be immensely proud,” Shinde said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

  The news has also made its way to Thulasendrapuram, the village where Harris’ mother’s family once lived.

  “We’re overjoyed to know that someone who traces her ancestry to our village might become the president of the United States,” said resident Sudhakar Jayaraman.

  He said villagers performed prayers at the local temple, which Harris and her grandfather once donated to, after they heard the news.

  “For a person of Indian descent with Tamil roots to reach such a high office makes us all proud,” Jayaraman added.

  Love review: Director RP Bala’s thriller is far-fetched from reality and simply falls flat

  This Tamil remake of a Malayalam film with the same name is neither as emphatic nor convincing as its original with regard to domestic violence.

  Director RP Bala’s Love , which happens to be the Tamil remake of a Malayalam film with the same name, begins on a promising note only to disappoint us in the end.

  The film, supposed to be a thriller, offers no thrills whatsoever and struggles to retain your attention.

  RP Bala’s Love is a faithful reproduction of the Malayalam version which featured Rajisha Vijayan and Shine Tom Chacko in the lead.

  However, the difference between both versions lies in the intensity they offer.

  Divya (Vani Bhojan) meets Ajay (Bharath), a prospective alliance, and chooses to wed him despite her father’s warning that he might not be an ideal match since he lost everything in business.  

  The fact that Ajay tells Divya that they need to postpone the decision to have a child till the time he sets things right does not help matters.

  A year or two into the marriage, the relationship between the couple sours. They are constantly at loggerheads.

  One day, Divya finds out that she is in the initial stages of pregnancy. She calls her husband from the clinic but does not get a response. On returning home, she finds soiled plates lying outside the sink and Ajay drinking and playing video games. She loses her cool and confronts him.

  Tempers flare up on both sides and one thing leads to another. The verbal altercation between Divya and Ajay soon turns physical, resulting in Ajay smashing Divya’s head against a piece of glass.

  She dies and Ajay, who is in a drunken stupor, is stunned at the sudden unexpected development. He drags her body to the bathroom and begins to wonder what to do next.

  The Tamil version of Love is neither as emphatic nor as convincing as its Malayalam counterpart when it comes to highlighting the issue of domestic violence.

  While Love ‘s motive in looking to highlight the issue of domestic violence is laudable, the fact that the story is presented from a feminist’s point of view cannot be denied.

  As a result, all the significant male characters in the movie are made to come across as monsters.

  For instance, the three main male characters in the film.

  Ajay (played by Bharath) is a loser, a cheat, and a man with a violent temper. However, his wife Divya is an accomplished, talented individual who, despite being the daughter of an exceptionally rich businessman, does not want to run her dad’s concern but to prove herself.

  That’s not all. Despite Divya being a more accomplished person than Ajay and the fact that she could have got a match with a much better social standing than Ajay, she agrees to marry him.

  It’s almost like she takes pity on him and does him a favour by marrying him.

  Next, take a look at Vivek Prasanna’s character. He appears as a dear friend of the protagonist Ajay in the film and dons a character that is again portrayed as a loser in business.

  His character wants to commit suicide; he drinks, pukes, and acts irresponsibly. What’s more, he suspects his wife of having an affair and intends to kill the man with whom he thinks she is having an affair.

  The third character played by Daniel Pope, is again shown as a person being disloyal to his wife, who, on the other hand, is shown as a responsible person.  

  That Vivek Prasanna and Daniel Pope’s characters go on to become imaginary characters at a later point in the film is another issue.

  There seems to be a sly attempt at demonising all men in the film Love .

  For instance, this dialogue that Vivek Prasanna utters. He justifies Ajay’s killing of his wife saying, “Is there a man who does not want to kill his wife?”

  This is nothing but a sad attempt to generalise and paint all men as potential wife-beaters waiting for an opportunity to indulge in domestic violence.

  Further, Love’s story is hard to relate to and far-fetched from reality. The flick also leaves several questions unanswered and makes the message the film is looking to send across unclear.

  Well, these are some of the reasons why you don’t find Love interesting and in a way, feel relieved when it ends.

  LOVE TODAY MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

  Love Today is a film written and directed by Pradeep Ranganathan and produced by Kalpathi S Aghoram, Kalpathi S Ganesh and Kalpathi S Suresh under the banner AGS Entertainment. The film has Pradeep Ranganathan and Ivana in the lead roles while Sathyaraj, Radhika Sarathkumar, Yogi Babu, Aajeedh, Bhaarath and others play supporting roles. It has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematography by Dinesh Purushothaman.

  Uthaman Pradeep (Pradeep Ranganathan) is a happy engineering graduate and is in a relationship with Nikitha (Ivana). One day, Ivana's father (Sathyaraj) finds out about their love and asks Uthaman to meet him. During the meeting, he asks the couple to exchange their phones. The rest of the film deals with what they get to know about each other through the phones and how it affects their relationship.

  The trailer itself revealed the crux of the film, so whether the film works or not depends solely on how Pradeep chooses to present this story. Right from the word go, the film is filled with a lot of jokes. And this is what makes an already known story completely engaging.

  Although Pradeep's acting is thoroughly enjoyable, it does remind us of Dhanush in terms of the body language. The star of the show is however Ivana, who aces her role as Nikitha. In the emotional scenes, she scores well and lifts those scenes several notches above. Among the other actors, Sathyaraj and Radhika Sarathkumar stamp their authority and prove their acting skills one more time, and Yogi Babu also chips in with a lot of punches.

  Another big advantage for Love Today is the fact that it doesn't depend solely on the counters for laughter. The situations are also funny in a lot of scenes and Pradeep chooses to milk the potential in each scene to evoke laughter. There are a few scenes where the jokes don't land, but mostly they're extreme fun.

  The spine of the film is Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score. When Yuvan's music was used as a promotion tool for the film, a few were skeptical, but the film tells us why the man is worth every bit of the hype. The choice of using Pyaar Prema Kaadhal 's BGM in one of the scenes also worked really well.

  The cinematography and editing also go hand in hand to give us a fantastic visual experience. DOP Dinesh Purushothaman has played with the colours and framing as much as possible, while the edits to a lot of reaction shots aid in creating humour out of ordinary scenes.

  Overall the film is technically fantastic and the actors' performances are also highly convincing. Despite a predictable plot, Love Today majorly engages and entertains because of the treatment. It is like your most favourite dish that you always order from a restaurant. You know how it is going to taste, but that is exactly why you order it. Love Today is one such fun film.
