In this article, we invite you on a thrilling journey to explore the 17 most haunted places in NC, unveiling the chilling stories that have captivated locals and visitors alike for decades.

From the terrifying Demon Dog of Valle Crucis to the enigmatic Brown Mountain Lights, North Carolina is teeming with ghostly encounters that will leave you awestruck and perhaps, a little unnerved.

So, gather your courage and prepare to delve into the supernatural side of the Tar Heel State. Let’s begin!

1. The Demon Dog, Valle Crucis

The Demon Dog in Valle Crucis, North Carolina

The story linked to Valle Crucis is not quite a ghost story, but it certainly qualifies as paranormal!

The area is said to be home to an absolutely terrifying demon dog who chases cars – and manages to keep pace with them no matter how fast they drive!

Local legend states that if you drive past the old stone cemetery high in the mountain town of Valle Crucis then the demonic dog will leap out from behind one of the headstones to chase you!

Witnesses who claim to have seen this hellish creature say it takes the form of a large black dog with glowing eyes and yellow teeth!

2. Paint Rock, Hot Springs

Paint Rock in Hot Springs, North Carolina

Paint Rock is located on the spectacularly scenic Appalachian Trail and it has one of the most interesting pieces of folklore in American history.

The legend goes that men camping near the area woke up to the sound of beautiful singing. They were lured by the siren song and found themselves looking at the reflection of a beautiful Cherokee woman in the water.

They were compelled to reach for the woman, but as they did so, some unknown creature pulled them into the water and drowned them!

Now hikers and campers are careful not to stray too close to the water by Paint Rock for fear of meeting the same fate.

3. Lydia’s Bridge, Greensboro

Lydia's Bridge in Greensboro, North Carolina

One of the most haunted places in Greensboro is Lydia’s Bridge. Local legend states that a young woman named Lydia crashed on the bridge on her way home from a dance with her date.

Related: The Most Haunted Bridges in NC

Her date died on impact, leaving an injured Lydia alone and trying desperately to flag someone down to help her. Unfortunately, no help came and Lydia also died.

In the years that followed it was said that Lydia’s ghost stands on the bridge flagging people down only to disappear when the car got close to her.

Other versions of the story say that drivers would actually stop and pick Lydia up and drive her home, but on reaching the house she would vanish, and if the door was knocked her mother would explain that she died years earlier.

The bridge is no longer in use, but plenty of visitors still stop by in search of Lydia!

4. USS North Carolina, Wilmington

USS Battleship North Carolina in Wilmington, North Carolina

One particular place in North Carolina that continues to fascinate paranormal investigators is the USS North Carolina.

However, he is by no means alone. Visitors, staff, and investigators have all confirmed seeing figures in various passageways and portholes around the ship.

Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina

Queens University is one of the most haunted locations in North Carolina and for many years students have claimed to have experienced paranormal activity in the building.

Common occurrences include doors opening and closing by themselves and knocking sounds that cannot be explained.

It is widely believed that the haunting can be attributed to a former student who committed suicide in the school after her parents learned that she was in a relationship with another woman.

6. Teach’s Hole, Ocracoke Island

Teach's Hole on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

Everyone has heard of the legendary pirate Blackbeard, right? He is well known for his tales of his adventures at sea chasing down ships and pillaging their cargo. However, few people know that he was beheaded by the Royal Navy in North Carolina in 1718.

Today, people who visit Teach’s Hole on Ocracoke Island say that they have heard the ghost of Blackbeard groaning as he searches the shore for the missing head!

7. The Great Dismal Swamp, Northern Border

8. The Biltmore Estate, Asheville

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina

The Biltmore Estate is probably one of the most popular landmarks in North Carolina, but aside from being a beautiful place to visit, it is also said to be one of the most haunted buildings in North Carolina!

The former owner of the estate, George Vanderbilt died in the property in the early 1900s and his death seems to have left a mark on the building.

It has been said that in the library visitors are sometimes able to hear the sound of his wife whispering to him during his final hours.

Of course, considering the fact that at 250 rooms, The Biltmore Estate is America’s largest home, as you might expect this is by no means the only haunting in the property.

There are also reports of a headless cat wandering around the property at night and people have heard disembodied voices in the swimming pool room along with splashes and laughing.

This seems appropriate given that Edith Vanderbilt was well known for hosting epic pool parties!

There have also been reports of a woman’s voice – presumably Edith – calling out George’s name!

9. Old Davis Hospital, Statesville

The Old Davis Hospital in Statesville, North Carolina

Hospitals are always a hotbed of paranormal activity and Davis Hospital in Statesville is certainly no exception. It was once a fully functional hospital that operated for around 6 decades, however, due to dilapidation and public concern, the buildings were demolished in 2021.

During its years of abandonment, it garnered a reputation as one of the most haunted locations in the state.

Thrill-seekers and urban explorers reported that even on the hottest day at the height of summer the interior of the Old Davis Hospital was unnaturally cold. It was also cloaked in an overriding feeling of despair and dread.

One of the most haunted areas of the hospital seemed to be the former pediatric ward where people heard babies crying and also where people felt a strong malevolent presence.

There have been reports of animal carcasses surrounding the path that leads to the spot. It is also said that if you place an item in the circle it will have vanished by the following morning!

11. The Brown Mountain Lights, Linville

Brown Mountain in Pisgah National Forest, Asheville, North Carolina

The Brown Mountain Lights were first spotted by Native Americans and have been at the center of great debate ever since. The strange, unexplained lights appear after sunset and they rise above the mountain peak and usually change size, shape, and color.

The best spots to view them are Linville, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Wiseman’s Gap. The U.S. Geological Survey has dismissed the phenomena as marsh gas, despite the fact that there are no known marshes in the area.

There have been various different suggestions made to explain the lights including everything from ghosts to aliens!

In terms of the ghostly explanations, there are two main stories that are often put forward. The first suggests that the lights are Native American maidens who are searching for their lost warriors who died in the great battle between the Cherokee and the Catawba tribes.

The other tale suggests that the light is actually a lantern carried by a slave who is searching the mountain for his lost master, an explorer who went missing on the mountain.

The lighthouse was originally built in 1870 and has undergone many reinforcements over the years, it has even been moved inland on more than one occasion as the shoreline reduced.

Sailors on their way past the lighthouse have often sighted what appears to be the ghost of a man walking along the beach, believed by many to be the ghost of the inventor Theodore Burr, who lost his life in a shipwreck near the lighthouse.

As well as other chilling tales, one that stands out is the story of the Carroll A. Deering ship. Famously known as the Ghost Ship, it washed ashore in 1921 completely void of passengers or equipment.

14. Historic Brookstown Inn, Winston-Salem

haunted brookstown inn winston salem

A hop, skip, and a jump away from Old Salem lies the Historic Brookstown Inn , which has been standing tall since 1837 – so you know it’s got stories to tell!

Once a cotton mill infamous for its grueling work environment and pint-sized laborers, it’s no wonder that Brookstown Inn is considered Winston-Salem’s most haunted hotspot . Deaths? Check. Ghosts? You bet!

If you’re seeking the paranormal, head straight to the fourth floor. Here, you’ll find Sally, the resident ghostly celebrity. After a workplace disagreement (and we thought our co-workers were tough!), poor Sally found herself at the bottom of an elevator shaft. Room 401 is her favorite haunt, as it used to be the dormitory for the mill workers.

But don’t worry, Sally isn’t alone. The hotel is also home to a playful posse of ghost kiddos. You might hear their tiny footsteps scampering through the halls or catch the sound of their ghostly giggles.

And let’s not forget Eddie. If you’re ever in an empty room and suddenly hear heavy stomping, it’s probably just Eddie making his ghostly presence known.

15. Roanoke Island, Dare County

roanoke island inn

Picture this: the year is 1585, and Sir Walter Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth I’s BFF, is tasked with establishing America’s first permanent colony. Talk about a daunting gig!

Raleigh and his crew, led by Ralph Lane, set sail and encounter stormy seas, a shipwreck, and a lost silver cup (the horror!). Tensions rise between settlers and Native Americans, and ultimately, the first colonization attempt ends in retreat.

But, like a phoenix from the ashes, Raleigh tries again. This time, John White leads the expedition, arriving at Roanoke Island in 1587. Virginia Dare, the first English child born on North American soil, comes into the world. What a time to be alive!

White returns to England for supplies but gets caught up in the war with Spain. When he finally makes it back to Roanoke, he finds… nothing. No people, no daughter, no granddaughter – just the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree. Spooky, right?

Fast forward to today, and Roanoke Island is teeming with legends and ghosts. Virginia Dare’s spirit is said to be trapped in a white doe, and visitors flock to catch a glimpse of this ethereal creature.

But wait, there’s more! The Roanoke Island Inn, a charming bed and breakfast, is also haunted. Asa and Martha Jones built the inn in the 1860s, and their descendant Roscoe Jones, a disgraced postman, died there in despair. Guests now report mysterious footsteps, radios turning on and off, and objects mysteriously smashing.

The mansion has gone through various ownerships, transformations, and even a fire, but its hauntingly beautiful charm remains.

Now, let’s get to the spooky stuff. The Duke Mansion is haunted by a tragic love story that unfolded between a previous owner, Jon Avery, and a young writer who had come to document the historic property.

Their forbidden romance led to a dramatic promise to reunite in the mansion’s gardens one year later, whether “dead or alive.”

Fast forward a year, and the young writer, now engaged to another man, keeps her promise to meet Avery. To her shock, she encounters his ghostly presence in the garden.

You see, Mr. Avery had passed away just days before their meeting, but love truly knows no bounds—even in the afterlife.

FIVE HAUNTED HOUSES IN NC FOR ONE PRICE!

HAUNTED FOREST AT PANIC POINT

Youngsville, North Carolina

Looking for North Carolina’s best haunted trail? You’ve come to the right place.

Haunted Forest at Panic Point offers five haunted attractions, all of them guaranteed to make your teeth chatter in fear!

Their main attraction is the Haunted Forest. Created 11 years ago, it’s been improved over and over, standing the tests of time. It offers the most scenes, haunters, and screams at Panic Point. Some of the sights you’ll notice around you include the Butcher Shop, Dollhouse, Voodoo Shack, Junkyard, Pallet Maze, Sanatorium, Motel, Crypt, Abbey, Killer’s Cabin, and Clown House.

Some of the guests describe the most terrifying actor they saw on the trail, only for staff to realize no one matches that description… So stay on the trail!

Next is the Dark Trail and its frightful (but fictional) story. In this area, Doomsday preppers set up a compound in the woods and started recruiting other disturbed people to help them work to prepare for The End. They kicked out two men for stealing moonshine, and these exiles decided to plot their revenge. They mixed up a few pounds of mutagen, then blanketed the entire compound in a mist of deadly vapor using a crop duster!

This biological weapon has left the land and the inhabitants permanently changed. The only more gnarled things than the preppers’ bodies are their minds… You’ll need to avoid contact with them as you travel through scenes like The Bunker, Swamp, and Vortex. Don’t let them touch you!

Another attraction is the Haunted Hayride, filled with seven spooky scenes. The monsters thirst for your blood… Killers in the Corn is like a traditional corn maze…except there are killers inside! Can you make it out?

Haunted Forest at Panic Point is also planning two new attractions, including Menacing Maze, another maze but with a mystery theme, and Carny Crypt, a repaired carnival trailer that might still have some energy from its old residents. Enter at your own risk!

This haunted house near me is rated PG-13, with children under 8 not allowed inside and kids between 9-12 must have adult supervision. You can buy one ticket to see everything, or choose your adventures à la carte. How many scares can you handle?

If you choose to do everything the Haunted Forest at Panic Point has to offer you, you’ll get to see 32 unique scenes and 70 horrifying creatures. Plus, it will take over two hours to make your whole way through.

Can you walk the whole trail without panicking too much? Only time will tell!

Best Haunted Houses in North Carolina

1. the haunted farm.

We know we’ve already spent some time talking about the Haunted Farm, but we wanted to make it clear that this is one of the best haunted houses in North Carolina, so you must visit it.

For over 13 seasons this haunt has grown. Now, as mentioned, it doesn’t have an age restriction, but it is SUPER scary, so don’t bring your kids. There are many attractions here: the farm, the meat house, the demon hay shed, the slaughterhouse and more. And don’t forget 2023 is bringing the new factory too!

Keep an eye out for that feud between the Lively and Tate families. For over 100 years, these families have caused some serious haunts. The land is as deadly as the feud. Just watch out for certain spots, like the Clear Creek. You’re bound to see a ghost there.

2. The Haunted Trail

Asheville haunted houses aren’t hard to come by, but when you want the best haunted attractions in North Carolina, you have got to the Haunted Trail. We want to make sure we put this on the list because it is one of the few family friendly haunts.

Sometimes you need options for the kids too! For over 11 seasons, this haunt comes to life each season. Boils and ghouls from the local Asheville Plays come out to put this event on. There is a typical haunted trail, and then a glow trail too!

Illuminate your trail with laser lights and twinkle lights. And don’t forget that there are sensory friendly nights available too. Food, beverages and games are also available. This is the place for all– from 4 years old to adults, it is a less scary haunt. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun!

This haunt also separates its tickets based on most crowded and easy crowded nights. So check their calendars! And book ahead. The backdrop of the lake here is stunning. And the monsters take care with their haunts. Not all ages may enjoy this.

Become part of the Legend this Halloween season at Spookywoods!

We drove an hour and forty-five minutes to brave SpookyWoods and I’d gladly do it again. The actors were great and the houses and props were top-notch. The staff was friendly. It almost had a homey feel to it. I can’t wait to go back! Might go back again before the season is over and bring more people with me.

This year featured a brand new experience due to all the renovations at Spooky Woods, and lemme tell ya, those changes were much needed.  I had actually stopped going to Spooky Woods five years ago and had no intention of really going back until I heard about all the fresh frights.  It is a bit pricey (especially the Immediate Access), but it’s worth it (to skip all the lines). The scares are great. The atmosphere is ominous throughout. And the sets are incredibly detailed.  It’s also clear the money Kersey Valley earns goes to their employees and their attractions, which I appreciate.

I’ll definitely be returning next season!

Absolutely the best haunt I’ve been too! We had a blast and had some genuine scares. Even the line was fun to wait in. The scare actors go above and beyond expectations, and the witch dancing is the icing on the cake. We met Brandon at the end of the haunt and had a wonderful talk with him about the haunt. He has absolutely out done himself and i look forward to coming back next year!

Been coming for over 10 years in a row now. Last night 10-8-23 was hands down the best I have ever seen. The icon section was absolutely the best thing I’ve ever seen. Keep up the hard work!!

ICONS! Wow! My paranormal group and I visited last night along with my daughter. And it was a wonderful night temp wise to enjoy the fall festivities. Even with having friends that work there, y’all still got me (the mask were great!). But I cannot say how awesome ICONS was! The set build, the detail, the actors (Michael Myers got me as soon as I stepped through the O). The bath house and campers in the woods, hidden so well and popping out or up off the ground getting the jump scare! But man, Jason GOT me coming out of the water! Tram jumpers were awesome and made my daughter beg for them to stop lol. It was a little dead in the corn maze but the anticipation of what might be in the stalks was creepy in itself. Once in the manor, it was a game of what was where, finding your way in the dark and if the floor was gonna move on you! Somebody with a staph really got my friend Heather lol. She threw her hands up and about fell backwards! Over all a great experience with friends……….and the Apple Cider Donuts after just sealed the deal

Absolutely the most fun we’ve had in years. The attractions are SO AWESOME, the sound, the lighting, fog…every detail. The employees were so friendly, and the actors were spooky!! The park was clean and inviting. Lines weren’t bad at all. We will DEFINITELY be back!!

The first time I went to Spooky Woods in 2017 I instantly fell in love and try to go back every October. The atmosphere is just unlike any other haunted attraction. The hayride through the woods from the parking lot to the entrance immediately sets the tone for a haunted adventure. The DJ and club spooky with the music and all the lights is such a fun experience but we highly recommend the VIP/Immediate Access tickets if you want to skip the line. It’s well worth the extra money. Each year they change it up with theme but every time I promise you will literally feel like you were dragged into a horror movie with their top tier scenic design, costumes, makeup, props, and insane special effects. This year (2023) they stepped up their game like I’ve never seen and I might even come back again before the end of the season. After the thrills you have to get the mini apple cider donuts and take pictures with the scare actors roaming around. And definitely stop to purchase your picture to capture the memory. They are always good quality! You can tell how much effort and detail is put in and how much the staff care. They are just so friendly every time and immediately treat you like family.

NORTH CAROLINA North Carolina has many scary attractions to keep you terrorized.  Greensboro haunted house was reviewed in Haunted Attraction Magazine as a Must See in 2014. Travel to Greensboro for the pure horror of Woods of Terror on Church Street .  Blackbeards Revenge brings all the pirates to the 3D haunted ship.  Travel to High Point for Kersey Valley Spookywoods .

North Carolina, one of the original thirteen (13) colonies, is rich is history and bloody war battles. From a war that lasted two years with the Native Americans and the European Settlers, The Tuscarora War ended with many lost souls wandering in purgatory. North Carolina, a state started with about thirty (30) different Native American tribes: Cherokee, Tuscarora, Catawba, Croatans, and many more were scattered across this beautiful state of North Carolina before all the bloody battles for land left death, destruction, dismemberment, and tortured behind. Only eight tribes are recognized in North Carolina today. Even Blackbeard, the English pirate, perished off the North Carolina coast in a disgusting disrespectful bloody manner. Blackbeard, shot multiple times, was dismembered into many pieces, and his bloodied head suspended from the front bow of the ship so a reward could be collected. Blackbeard's spirit still looking for vengeance for his death, roams the portals that open from the depths of the under-world looking to expel his intense anger that builds throughout the year. All these spirits converged with all the spirits of the soldiers who died during the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Moore's Creek lasted five (5) minutes and left about seventy (70) soldiers dead. North Carolina's death totals rose significantly during the Civil War with over forty-thousand more dead. Souls left behind to complete missions, lost between life and death now roam North Carolina. These souls converged in the many haunted houses, haunted mazes, haunted hayrides, ghost tours, paranormal activity, attractions and more. Summoned by the Halloween season, draws them to the portals that open due to the intense negative energy they need to expel. This intense negative energy they expel, helps the living keep them at bay for the remainder of the year. Unfortunately, they must return to do their bidding as part of their mission in purgatory. North Carolina is a major portal to the depths of the under-world. Demons and messengers of the under-lord return to experiment on the living. Hidden chambers and dungeons are opened under the pure evil and negative energy of the spirits who are unaware of their untimely death. North Carolina is home to many haunted attractions that are well known in the haunt world. These attractions have been selected as one of America's Best Haunts, on the list of 25 Must See Haunts from the Haunted Attraction Magazine, and on many local television and radio stations. Visit the haunted world of twisted and deranged haunted houses, spooky woods, attractions, mountains, mazes, estates, trains, trails, parks, manors, fields, graveyards, camps and more. Find the most innovative animatronics, cutting edge technology, scary monsters, creepy zombies, clowns, demented demons, creatures from the depths of the under-world, wandering souls, and bring your nightmares to life right here in North Carolina. When you are searching for haunted houses online, North Carolina is full of restless souls.

Woods of Terror - Greensboro NC

Eddie McLaurin knows how to scare people.  He knows so well that you can say he’s the Stanislavski of acting training in haunted houses. He has a method, and his method works. He says it is rare that a young performer, no matter how experienced of an actor, knows how to scare people.  But Eddie will teach them.

Eddie started Woods of Terror, a mega-haunt outside of Greensboro, North Carolina “22 frightening years ago.” In that time it has become a veritable horror theme park.  With 30 acres of woodlands,   a staff of 175 and over 100 actors all housing 9 attractions and a midway called Halloween Town, this haunted adventure rivals the biggest and best in the country.  Quite simply, this is not just a haunted house, but home to multiple attractions. It takes about 90 minutes to complete.

But the engine that makes Woods of Terror run is the actors.

“I like the production part of [a haunted house], and we do have movie level production values, but my focus is on the acting,” says Eddie. “My bread and butter are startles. I’m very good at finding different ways to startle people.” He adds, “keep it simple, stupid. It’s all about the startles”. Simplicity is true for the sets as well “I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on large facades and what have you, and people don’t even pay attention. Once I bought an extremely expensive piece of scenery and people leaving were like ‘that was alright’, but then I threw an old school bus in the middle of the cornfield that cost me $500 and that’s all anyone could talk about.” He emphasizes it’s what it is, not how much it is.

Eddie puts his actors through rigorous actor training.  Full of acronyms and motivational speeches, He has his monsters ready for all situations.  He has created a scare sequence that always needs to be at the core of the actor’s process.  It’s quite simple, really, and seems elementary to the seasoned haunter.  It’s a four-pronged checklist:  Hide, Startle, Stalk, Hide.  Of course the devil is in the details. They each have lines, and activities they have to accomplish as well, but as long as they remember hide, startle, stalk, hide then they will never forget how to scare. And the trick of this sequence is that it is not always the same.  Sometime the sequence rotates so that the back of the group starts first, and then the front and then the middle.  As obvious as it might seem, Eddie reminds us, “to keep it simple, stupid”.  There are also variations on the theme.  He says the best startles are when “someone is hiding in plain sight.” This means that you are looking straight at it, but you don’t realize that’s what you are looking for until it’s lunging at you.  He compares it to the scene where E.T. is hiding in the closet dressed as a doll, but the mother doesn’t register what she is seeing because, well, she wasn’t looking for an alien.  It works like that, but with zombies, vampires, killer clowns and psychopaths. Clearly his formula has worked.  They average over 30,000 visitors a season with 75% of the audience being repeat customers.

Woods of Terror is consistently named one of the best haunts in America.  Once you enter you never stop. You traverse from one attraction to the next via a black-out maze.  The first of 9 attractions is called Infestation.  This event starts with 16 aquariums full of snakes and other creepy crawlies, but then turns into an all-out sensory assault playing on a myriad of phobias: bugs, spiders, snakes, claustrophobia and darkness.

Next is Nightstalkers, a larger than usual corn maze.  It’s harvest time and you’re the crop!

This leads to Industrial Nightmare where the previous employees are now inhabiting  the defunct power plant ready to feast on the visitors.

Next up is Awakening, which I do not believe is based on the Oliver Sacks book and subsequent movie starring Robert DeNiro, unless that book was about a graveyard ransacked with zombies with a penchant for braaaaaiiiins, but I don’t think it was.

In Chaos 3D you wear 3D glasses and go through the darkness where 3D paint brings the walls alive. Psychotic clowns abound. That leads to The Blood House where beautiful vampires are thirsting for your blood.

And if you want something different from your haunt, then WOT is the place to be.  How many haunts have a Gold Mine haunted by evil, greedy dead miners?

Then we go back to a familiar trope at the Slaughter House which pays tribute to the Texas Chain Saw Massacre complete with pain and suffering, the smell of death, and the big metal door… dare to enter

The Horrorwood Cinema Grande is a very impressive recreation of an old-timey abandoned theater where you are the show, experience terror first hand!

Finally, there’s Blackbeard’s Revenge. A pirate ship that moves, unleashed from its final resting place, don’t steal the rum or treasures… note:  There will be no Jack Sparrow or pirates with squid beards.

After all is said and done, you get to enjoy the Halloween Town midway where there are performances, a gift shop, concession stand and horror memorabilia museum.  Just like a real theme park.  Some monsters will also pop out from time to time to startle you.  You know, just to keep it simple, stupid.

Things That Go Bump in the Night: 8 Haunted Places in North Carolina

Enjoy a spooky meal in a haunted restaurant, visit one of our famous lighthouses humming with spiritual activity or dare to stay the night in a haunted hotel.

Take the spookiness one step further than haunted houses this Halloween season and check out actual haunted sites across the Tar Heel State. From friendly apparitions to some straight-up creepy paranormal activity, some people loved North Carolina so much they never wanted to leave, even in death. Here are eight sites across our state to explore for the most legendary and spooky ghost sightings.

1 The Omni Grove Park Inn

scariest haunted house near north carolina

The Pink Lady is a well-known, friendly spirit roaming The Omni Grove Park Inn since the 1920s. Whether her fall from the fifth floor of the Palm Court Atrium at the Inn was an accident or something more sinister, the Pink Lady doesn’t seem to hold much of a grudge. She’s either seen as a vibrant pink mist or a young woman in a pink ballgown, most often by children. Also a fan of pranks, the Pink Lady is blamed for lights and air conditioners turning on and off, and for the rearrangement of objects in guest rooms. Book a night in room 545 – where the Pink Lady seems to be particularly active – for your best chance at an encounter.

2 Devil’s Tramping Ground

Just south of Siler City in the pine woods of Chatham County is a barren circle about 40 feet in diameter known as the Devil’s Tramping Ground . Folklore says the spot is a place where the devil himself paces in a circle each night to ponder what havoc he can wreak. Seemingly going against the law of science, not a single living thing will grow in the circle – not a tree, flower, weed or blade of grass will sprout. Even vegetation that’s transplanted there will wither and die. Thrill-seekers have traveled to the circle at night and reported that if you place an item in the circle, it will have vanished by the following morning.

3 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

scariest haunted house near north carolina

The tallest brick lighthouse in North America has quite the haunted history. The most well-known ghost story is that of the Carroll A. Deering ship, known as the Ghost Ship, that washed ashore in 1921 void of passengers or equipment. Oddly, the only items found on board were food laid out as though for a meal. There’s also the legend of the ghost cat, a large black and white cat visitors have seen in and around the lighthouse for more than 100 years. Talk about living nine lives!

4 Brown Mountain Lights

For decades, a series of unexplained lights have appeared after sunset above the peak of Brown Mountain, changing in size, shape and color. The earliest reports of the lights were from Cherokee and Catawba Native Americans, then Civil War soldiers. Today, thousands have reported seeing the lights above the mountain. Try to spot them for yourself from Wiseman’s View in the Linville Gorge ; look for small, star-like dots moving either slowly or in an almost firework-like manner. Groups of students from nearby Appalachian State University have studied the lights, and they’ve even been investigated multiple times by the US government.

5 The Duke Mansion

scariest haunted house near north carolina

The story goes like this: Jon Avery, a former owner of the Duke Mansion , began an affair with a young writer while his wife was institutionalized. Despite Avery telling the woman he would always come for her, dead or alive, it became clear he was not going to leave his wife. The writer ended the affair. Devastated and desperate, Avery asked her to meet one year later at midnight. Upholding her end of the bargain, she arrived a year later, saw him approach and reached out to grab his wrist – and her hand went right through him. He turned around and said, “Dead or alive.” Later, she learned that Avery had died a week earlier. Today, eerie story aside, you can stay in one of the Duke Mansion’s 20 beautifully decorated rooms, or enjoy events in the gardens during warmer months.

6 The Country Squire Restaurant, Inn & Winery

Ever wanted to dine with a ghost? That’s exactly what you can do at The Country Squire Restaurant, Inn & Winery in Kenansville , where the spirit of original owner Joe West is rumored to still hang around making sure everything runs the way he likes. After enjoying your meal in a cozy, vintage setting, watch where you walk near the dartboard – darts have been known to fly through the air on their own. Merry chatter and phantom footsteps have also been heard in the Jester’s Court and throughout various hallways.

7 Battleship North Carolina

Aerial shot of Battleship North Carolina in river with city in background during daytime.

Battleship North Carolina participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific during World War II. One of the deadliest attacks on the battleship was a Japanese torpedo strike in the hull, where five men died. One young soldier was killed in the battleship’s washroom, and his spirit has been seen there. There have also been sightings of other apparitions in passageways, shadowy figures peering through portholes, hatches and doors opening and closing on their own, sounds of running and even objects being hurled through the air. For even more of Wilmington’s haunted sites, join the nationally acclaimed Ghost Walk and Haunted Pub Crawl of Old Wilmington , a walking tour of the most actively haunted homes and burial grounds nearby.

8 The Biltmore Hotel

Sometimes ghosts hang around a certain site due to unfinished business, which might be the case for both Philip and Lydia, the resident ghosts at The Biltmore Hotel . Built by the Cone Brothers in the early 1900s, the hotel served as their office and that of their accountant, Philip. Philip died in the alley next to the hotel under mysterious circumstances, and the lore is that he was murdered for discovering financial discrepancies. Guests have complained about loud footsteps, the shuffling of paper and conversations coming from room 332, Philip’s former room. But Philip isn’t the only ghost known to roam the halls. In the hotel’s boarding house days, Lydia, a lady of the night, was thrown down the stairs by a client. Her spirit still lingers around room 223, which is now painted pink in her honor.

Haunted Forest at Panic Point

2808 cedar creek rd, youngsville, nc 27596.

Haunted Forest at Panic Point – “11 short years ago we found an unhallowed plot of land, planted our little seeds of  panic, and gently nourished them with terror & dread until a full forest of fear emerged. The half-mile “Haunted Forest” Trail is our featured attraction. A 12 scene scream-fest with over 30 haunters to hound your every step. But that’s just the beginning. Some victims prefer the slightly shorter “Dark Trail” for its lack of light and unexpected twists. The “Haunted Hayride” rambles aimlessly through the woods among murderers, spiders & aliens.

“Killers in the Corn” is an assortment of distorted figures enough to make you want to hop the fence and flee with no regard for your own safety. It is the newest attraction but has taken its rightful place among our “Big 4”, purchased together as the Quad Fright. You’ll spend a couple hours going through 32 unique scenes and meet more than 70 creatures whose only purpose is to see you cower in fear.”

Pinhead’s Graveyard

168 main st, canton, nc 28716.

Pinhead’s Graveyard , located at 168 Main Street, Canton, North Carolina 28716, is one of the Best & Top Rated Haunted Houses and Haunted Attractions in North Carolina and the South. We were Voted #1 North Carolina Haunted House & Attraction in 2018 & 2019 by NorthCarolinaHauntedHouses.com and Haunts.com

You will see main horror movie characters who do not want to be bothered including Pinhead, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Art The Clown, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Jeepers Creepers, Pennywise, Otis, Victor Crowley  and many more.

In 2021, Pinhead’s Graveyard has moved inside! We found a century old building with rich history, creepy character and we are now able to operate our Haunted House in a truly Haunted Building. During preparation for the attraction, we have already experienced several supernatural events including orbs, moving objects, loud footsteps and other things that will make the hair on your arms stand straight up.

Being inside is allowing us to elevate the Graveyard from its outside roots and build elaborate sets, create jump scares and the addition of animatronics to supplement our already solid foundation of characters.

The graveyard is appropriate for all ages and groups with small children can expect a toned down version of scares. Even though we take pride on the realism of our haunted house, we also take pride that we are family orientated and family friendly. We are a fun and safe haunted house that people visit in October.
