Yes! Nick and I are back with one of our most popular episodes – breaking down IELTS essay questions that have been reported in recent exams! Today, we look at 6 that I think are interesting because they either

• introduce a new topic that we have never seen covered in the exam before OR
• are a common essay question format that students often find difficult

As always, the questions that we are looking at today are questions that have been posted online by students who have recently taken the test.  Although I am employed as a professional exam writer (you can read more about this here ) , it is impossible for me to recreate the questions perfectly (after all, I did not see the question!)

Therefore, I strongly recommend that you only use these questions for self-study.

In particular, I recommend that you focus most on the topics currently being used so that you can make sure that you have good ideas if a similar one appears in your test. After all, it is hard enough trying to come up with arguments when the topic is familiar, but it can be impossible if it is one you know nothing about!

As you look at each essay prompt, ask yourself the following questions:

• If you are asked to agree with a side, which one would you agree with? Why? Try to come up with two or three separate arguments. Then, consider the other view. What arguments would somebody with the opposite view offer?
• If you are asked to agree or disagree with a statement, which position would you take? Why? Can you come up with two strong but different arguments that support your position? How would you present your view so that it could be understood most clearly? Do you have any examples that could make your arguments clearer?
• If you are asked to evaluate a trend, what factors have led to this change?  What effects could the trend have in the future? Are those positive or negative? Can you think of wide arguments that consider society as a whole rather than individuals?

Once you have your plan, tune in to listen to see if Nick and I would approach the essay in the same way or a different way.

• Did we have similar ideas or were there some that you had not considered?
• Did you listen to any lexis that you could use to improve your essay once you write it?

The 6 IELTS Essay Questions from 2021 that we will break down!

Here, there will be four answers to two different topics to give the aspirants a clear idea of how to speak when different genres of topics are asked during the exam. Aspirants should keep one thing in mind, that they should not speak relevantly to the topic asked. Have a look at the below answers to make yourself clear.

My city council makes every effort to improve the lives of its residents by introducing new facilities on a regular basis.

What It Is?

Let me discuss one such facility that is now unavailable in my community but might greatly benefit if there was a park.

Actually, there isn’t a park in my neighbourhood. People, on the other hand, utilise a weekend plot to dumb down their crap. At the same time, you can always see stray animals here. This plot is more of a blemish on my community’s face. It not only stinks horrible, but it also helps to keep infections at bay. If this space is turned into a garden, I feel it will significantly improve the region.

How It Can be Done?

It would aid with the clean-up and greening of my neighbourhood.

Furthermore, it would allow community members to socialise in the same way that we see people doing in the evenings and mornings in parks, where they sit together and converse. We frequently observe elderly individuals sitting together, playing cards, or engaging in other hobbies. In the same way, it would provide a secure play place for youngsters.

What Problem will it Solve?

Most children in my neighbourhood play on the streets, which is quite unsafe because there is always the potential of an accident.

A park, on the other hand, would provide them with a safer environment in which to play. In fact, there are usually swings, rides, and other activities in parks, which would encourage youngsters to participate in these activities rather than sit at home and use their phones.

How Do You Feel about It?

Last but not least, people nowadays face several health issues; however, they can go for a walk in parks, and Yoga sessions can be held there as well, which would greatly benefit the people and ensure the community’s well-being.

Topic 2 for IELTS Speaking Exam Preparation

Describe a new skill you want to learn. – What it is – How would you learn it – Where you can learn it – and explain why you want to learn it.

Depending on their requirements and goals, various people prefer to study different sets of abilities. Some people even like learning new talents, such as new hobbies. Well, as for me, I’d like to master a talent because I believe it is vital, and I’ll explain why.

What Is It?

But first, let me tell you about a skill I’d like to learn. “Fixing motorcycles” is the name of this expertise. Well, I understand if you don’t find this skill as interesting or inspiring as many others, but believe me when I say that if you have a motorcycle that gives you difficulties on a regular basis, this skill will come in handy.

You’re obviously figuring by now that I must own a motorcycle in order to care so passionately about this motorcycle repair skill, and you’re correct. Despite the fact that I adore this old metal bird, I do own an old motorcycle that likes to bother me every now and then.

How Would You Learn It?

However, just because I enjoy it a lot doesn’t mean I’m willing to spend a lot of money on it every week to fix it. As a result, I’ve chosen to master this talent so that I won’t have to rush to a mechanic to get my clumsy motorcycle fixed.

Where Can You Learn It?

To do so, I’d have to enrol in a technical school first and then read some relevant literature on the subject. Furthermore, watching any practical tutorials on this trade skill would be quite beneficial.

Anyway, I’d like to develop this talent because it’s critical to have the necessary safety and security on the road when riding a motorcycle. Furthermore, I want to study it since it will teach me how to repair my own motorcycle, which would save me a lot of money.

The IELTS Writing Task 2 Two Questions Essay: Causes & Positive/Negative Trends .

There are a number of different types of IELTS essay questions. There are Opinion Essays, Discussion Essays, Advantage/Disadvantage Essays, Solution (including Cause/ Solution) Essays and there are Direct Question Essays (such as the Two Question Essay). However, please note that different teachers use different names for essay types. This model essay below looks at the Direct Question Essay with Two Questions. 

IELTS Essay Question  – Computer Games

More and more adults are playing computer games. Why is this happening? Is it a positive or negative trend?

The main topic in the essay question is Technology and the specific topic is Computer Games. It is a current essay question because it is about a current trend in the world today. I’ve provided a list of tips to help you tackle this type of essay question.

Points to Consider

• There is only one issue to tackle : computer games. This is lucky. It is an easy essay question. Some essay questions are more complex and have two separate issues to tackle.
• There are two questions to answer . I call this type of question a “Direct Question Essay”. The first question is about causes of the trend. The second question is about evaluating whether it is good or bad. Whenever you are asked to choose, it means you must give your opinion.
• Pay attention to the wording of the essay topic . This is about adults, not children. It is about computer games which some people consider are for children. Always pay attention to all keywords in the essay question when you brainstorm or you will go off topic. Ask yourself questions to stimulate ideas. Why are adults playing games on a computer? We know that children like to do this, but why are adults doing this? And is this good? Is it good that adults are playing computer games? If it is bad, why? 
• Next think about the concept of “computer games”. Spend time analysing the issue given . We often consider computer games to be silly entertainment fore children. But is that correct? Are all computer games actually silly? If we think about this carefully, we will realise that actually some computer games are complex and strategic. Some games require skill and intelligence to play. This means that the issue of computer games is not a simple one. Computer games are varied. Does this essay question apply to childish computer games or complex games? The answer is – it applies to both. So, now we know we can tackle this issue at a level of more depth. Getting to the depth of the issue is essential for a high score.  So, while we can see there is only one issue (computer games) that single issue is complex and can be divided into different aspects.
• After you brainstorm, choose the ideas that are the most relevant and the easiest to explain well. You don’t get a high score because you have lots of ideas. You get a higher score for presenting specific ideas which are well developed and highly relevant.
• If you have two questions to cover. It is logical to have two body paragraphs . Being logical in your choice of paragraphing is important. 
• Provide a clear position in your introduction as to whether you think this is a positive or negative point. Being clear in the introduction helps the examiner follow your body paragraphs more easily and this will increase your score. If you think it is positive – make it clear. If you think it is negative – say so. If you think “it depends” – make sure you word it clearly and explain it clearly in the body paragraphs. The easiest approach is a positive or negative one (a one-sided approach). The “it depends” approach is harder and requires stronger language skills. 

Model Essay: Computer Games (2024)

It seems that the current trend is for an increasing number of adults to enjoy playing computer games in their free time. With the development of game technology, it is hardly surprising that adults are playing games, but whether it is positive or negative depends on the games played and the time spent on them.

In terms of why so many adults are choosing to spend time playing computer games, it is mainly because the technology behind the games is becoming more sophisticated. Initially, when games first came out, they were very simplistic and appealed mainly to children. However, things have moved on since then and games have become visually appealing, very absorbing, require great dexterity and some also have a strategic challenge to them which adults particularly like. Such games can attract professional adults looking to hone tactics and skills to other adults wishing just to relax and switch off.

However, whether this trend in adults towards computer games is beneficial or not can be challenged. Some adults use complex, challenging games as a form of escapism which keeps their mind sharp and helps them relax at the same time. As long as the time spent on such games is balanced with other healthier pursuits, it can be constructive. Unfortunately, adults who ignore their physical health and spend too much time on mindless, repetitive games develop a sedentary lifestyle which can be detrimental to their wellbeing. 

In conclusion, computer games have become more fascinating and tempting to adults. While games that help develop tactics and knowledge might be advantageous, no game, particularly senseless games, should be played to excess and certainly should not replace healthier leisure activities.

The IELTS Cambridge Test Books are copyrighted so I can’t share them. However, you can find new as well as second hand copies on Amazon or possibly in a local educational store.

I don’t feel the introduction is clear, and there is no clear opinion.

“it depends” indicates the opinion. It shows that the writer intends to be specific about when it is positive and when it is negative because their opinion covers both. This can often be the case with IELTS essays that require an opinion. You do not have to choose positive or negative and be 100% on one side. It is 100% acceptable in IELTS but it is a more difficult opinion to create if one’s English language isn’t strong.

This is not an agree/disagree essay. The Opinion Essay is an agree disagree essay which requires you to agree, disagree or have a partial agreement with an opinion given by IELTS. That essay is not an Opinion Essay because you aren’t being asked to respond to an opinion given by IELTS. This essay is a Direct Questions Essay which may or may not require an opinion depending on the questions you are given. In an Opinion Essay, you introduce your opinion in the introduction and the whole essay explains your opinion. You can’t suddenly put a different opinion further down the essay. Your opinion must be consistent throughout the whole essay. I recommend you get my advanced lessons because they explain in detail how to tackle an Opinion Essay. This is due to indulgence of parents and can have possible detrimental effects.” I know you don’t comment on write ups, but this is with a hope, in case…

I’ll just make one comment. I made a list of points to consider. Point 3 was important. This isn’t about youths. It’s about adults, which means people in their early 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s etc. And because it is about adults, it cannot be related to “indulgence from parents”. If you make this mistake, most of your essay will be off topic. That is the reason I wrote point 3. Take a look again because it’s an important lesson to learn.
