Business/Management Dissertation & Theses

While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a business-related research topic, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together.

Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various management-related degree programs (e.g., MBAs, DBAs, etc.) to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

The Best Final Theses in 2022

March 27, 2023

Collage of the best final theses 2022 submitted at Munich Business School

More than 170 final theses were submitted to the examination office of Munich Business School in 2022. Four of them stood out in particular: They are the best theses of the year and were included in the MBS Outstanding Thesis series. In the blog article, we present the topics of the theses in more detail and let the honorees and their supervisors have their say.

As in the previous year , the best theses of 2022 demonstrate that bachelor’s and master’s theses are not only the icing on the cake on the way to graduation, but can also make a valuable contribution to research on current topics. “Best”, by the way, does not only refer to an outstanding grade; the theses should primarily convince through innovative approaches and methods as well as new findings.

And now, clear the ring for the best theses of 2022!

Mitigating, Managing and Moving Past Burnout: An Organizational Perspective on Mental and Physical Well-Being

Bachelor’s thesis by gavin trudeau.

Gavin Trudeau, graduate of the bachelor’s program International Business at MBS, deals in his bachelor’s thesis with the topic of burnout, which has become more present in society as well as in medicine and the workplace in recent years. On the basis that burnout is not just an isolated feeling of overwhelm, but a syndrome which is experienced after ongoing negative experiences that and poses great dangers to organizations and their employees, Gavin Trudeau discusses causes, symptoms, and prevention strategies. By combining a comprehensive literature review with empirical research consisting of a self-reporting survey and in-depth interviews, the bachelor’s graduate succeeds in painting a “holistic picture” that reveals “not only what causes stress at the workplace but also shows the drivers as well as appropriate measures at the company and their relation to avoid negative impacts” – say the thesis supervisors Prof. Dr. Arnd Albrecht and Evelyn Albrecht-Goepfert.

Portrait Gavin Trudeau

We asked Gavin Trudeau how he came to address the topic of burnout in his bachelor’s thesis:

“I have always been interested in psychology and the importance of mental health so it was important for me to bring those two elements into my thesis and relate it to current issues I had been witnessing in the business landscape. At the time I started thinking about my topic we were still in the depths of the pandemic, and working from home was still mandatory for most people. I was seeing and hearing so many examples of people from my network experiencing abnormal levels of stress at their jobs and having difficulties adapting to the new way of life and working, which ultimately led me to the topic of burnout prevention, stress reduction and health promotion. I thought these topics were extremely relevant and also forward thinking. The importance of mental health in the workplace is on the rise and starting to be seen as equally important as physical health. My motivation for this research was to be able to provide valuable and insightful data and recommendations so that CEO’s, managers, entrepreneurs and employees can integrate these learnings into their lives to create healthier and more positive work environments.”

Bootstrapping New Networks – Incentivization Strategies to Leverage Network Effects within Digital Platforms by Using Blockchain Technology

Master’s thesis by philipp wohlfart.

Portrait Philipp Wohlfart

Start-ups must deal with the “cold start” problem and especially for platforms that fight the “chicken and egg” dilemma, building an initial user base is a major challenge. Since new emerging technologies such as blockchain technology have so far received only little attention in research on this topic, although they promise attractive solutions, Philipp Wohlfart addresses this issue in his master’s thesis. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship graduate explores the question of how blockchain technology can help to bootstrap new networks by using token incentives when application utility is still missing. To answer the question, Phillip Wohlfart conducted six semi-structured experts interviews – with the result that token incentives can support in many ways.

“From the factual coverage to the method to the results, a truly outstanding work: logically argued, well researched, and very structured and transparently presented. Phillip Wohlfarts findings have both theoretical and practical implications for stakeholder management and alignment within platforms. They also provide insight into how to create, evaluate or analyze sustainable blockchain-based platform designs.” Prof. Dr. Anne Tryba, supervisor of the thesis and former Professor for Entrepreneurship at MBS

Analysis of the Impact of Customer Experience Management Among B2B Companies in the Construction Industry

Mba master’s thesis by sarim mehtab hasan.

While B2C companies have been firmly incorporating customer experience management (CXM) strategies into their business models for quite some time and there is accordingly sufficient research on the subject, the relevance of CXM in the B2B context has only recently been repeatedly emphasized. To investigate the importance of CXM in the context of his master’s thesis, Sarim Mehtab Hasan chooses the construction industry, for which the requirement of customer experience is even more vital due to diverse stakeholders. Interviews with senior professionals from construction companies show that the construction industry is still traditional, focuses on short-term returns, which doesn’t align with customer’s needs, and overall lacks awareness of CXM and its benefits. Sarim Hasan uses these – rather sobering – results to derive recommendations as well as short- and long-term implementation strategies for the construction industry in terms of customer experience, which earned his thesis the rating “outstanding”.

Portrait Sarim Mehtab

We asked Sarim Hasan what it means to him that his thesis in the MBA General Management was awarded as MBS Outstanding Thesis:

It was my first time writing a thesis and I learnt a lot during the entire process. Not only was I able to get an extensive understanding of the topic of CXM in the B2B environment but also improve my personal & professional skills. This, combined with the experience I gained from the business projects during my studies at MBS, really elevated my capability to manage projects effectively, which is something I currently apply on a daily basis in my full-time job. Getting this award gave a substantial boost to my confidence levels, especially to take on new risks for a higher reward, and validated the importance of CXM in today’s customer-driven business world. After working for almost 8 months in a customer-facing role post-MBA, I can undoubtedly confirm that my thesis has played a major role in my performance as a Customer Experience Manager at A2MAC1 and I hope that other business students find value in my research and take it even further.

Economic Evaluation of Digitized Health Data for the German Health Care System Using the Example of the Electronic Health Record

Mba master’s thesis by dr. sven grösgen.

Portrait Sven Grösgen

Dr. Sven Grösgen dedicates his final thesis to a highly topical and explosively discussed subject: Germany’s plans to introduce of an electronic patient record. Such a digital file promises not only to improve healthcare, but also to have a positive impact on the economy. However, the status quo is that only 1.8% of total annual spending has been devoted to driving digitization in healthcare, while per capita spending continues to rise at the same time. With a general analysis of the electronic patient record and a detailed cost benefit analysis, Sven Grösgen shows that digital storage of health data has potential to counteract inefficiencies in healthcare and that the costs would be offset within the first ten years. In addition, the MBA graduate advocates an “opt-out” instead of an “opt-in” model and provides further impulses on how the implementation of an electronic patient record can be increased and further developed into an electronic health record.

“The author provides a very good and knowledgeable overview of existing literature and discusses all relevant aspects of the topic. At the time of the research, various reservations of both medical practitioners and patients shaped the discourse, so the focus on the economic benefits is particularly enlightening. As the relevance of the topic has recently increased even more, reading this thesis can be recommended to anyone seeking a sound basis on this topic area.” Prof. Dr. Eva Stumpfegger and Prof. Dr. Florian Bartholomae about why they decided to nominate Sven Grösgen’s thesis as MBS Outstanding Thesis

Analyzing the Role of Impact Management in Sustainable Business Practices

1. introduction.

The business operates in a set of markets that are regulated, with one level of competition implied, and focused on common objectives such as maximizing the interests of their owners and leading with sustainable practices. Both private as well as publicly traded businesses have a unique relationship with human society, so they are accountable not only to their stockholders but also to their entire heap of stakeholders, including employees, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, commercial partners, public officials, civil society, governments, and society, who rely on the business and invest forces in the work enterprise. Differences among the large amount of stakeholders, influenced through the corporate work, along with juggling, maximize harmful stakeholder concerns through the operations of the enterprise, therefore benefiting the company both directly and indirectly. Negative impacts have recently been discovered, particularly in leading business practices to better evaluate, address, and continuously improve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts, which could include risk, cost, and efficiency. Both providing and using investment and strengthening business decision-making, as well as verifying the impact of the organization, require investment. Realizing and analyzing compromises (social, economic, and environmental/physical) and trade-offs between groups of key or segmented stakeholders should collaborate to measure or check both non-financial and financial strategies and positive impacts.

2. The Concept of Impact Management

The core tenet of impact management hinges on the premise often iterated from the outset that when a company pursues profit, it causes side effects beyond those direct and immediate effects of that profit. The secondary effects may be either beneficial or detrimental - and it does not matter. They are "external" to the modern mainstream concept of the company's activity: the pursuit of profit. As the side effects of business activity, they are known. Recognizing these effects places a better-informed corporation in the acceptable position where it can measure, assess, and in particular, actually manage them. Therefore, impact management presenting to coordinate the side effects of business activity under a given set of parameters such as corporate values, traditions, existing capital, strategic needs, etc., makes good business and ethical sense. It improves the business sector's good health on behalf of the community's good health. Unreal in the economic analysis of most business examples are the numerous internally risky long-term essentials which frequently have the most significant long-term bearing on the nation's health, wealth, and welfare, chief among them matters concerning long-term health care. By focusing and institutionally name-positioning corporate brainpower on an improving not-way-to-small-stakes contest in better management of externally risky essentials, the concept of impact management offers an important new process for creating wealth on behalf of the community's good. In other words, co-management under strategic direction of the CEO's office. The bottom line is finding the most desirable balance of risks and rewards - via perceptions, a methodology for, at least some degree of corporate brainpower as socially responsible investing understands the term and as the investing portfolio decides.

3. Frameworks for Impact Measurement and Management

Aims: Practitioners and scholars increasingly stress the importance of both impact measurement and impact management for achieving sustainable business practices. This study addresses the question of how impact measurement frameworks are utilized in practice and how these link to impact management initiatives. The investigation examines whether businesses are indeed 'rational' and whether practitioners employ the logical 'order' between measurement and management. Methodology: The aim is addressed by inviting practitioners to participate in profiling their impact measurement and management initiatives. Data is collected from online self-administered questionnaires and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Findings: Surprisingly, many recognized impact measurement frameworks are not that popular in practice. Findings reveal that the choice and use of measurement frameworks are influenced by various issues within businesses. Businesses with explicitly listed impact outputs measure the success of their business from an economic, environmental, and social perspective at the same time, are under more pressure and feel more obligated. This group more often measures the potential positive impacts and/or costs at the project propositions phase. Guide them successfully through the project cycle, careful goal setting is seen as an important aspect for the impact measurement and management process at your project's design phase. Emphasizing the alignment with other companies and stakeholders' benefits and making impact alignment easier gained highest potential positive impact. This study examines the opportunities for the development and adoption of integrated impact frameworks. For this purpose, interpretative structural modeling has been applied to understand the complex dimensions of integrated impact management framework phenomena. Results offer key insights and possibilities for policymakers to consider when taking decisions to broaden the policy, tools, communication and engagement elements and resources to introduce change and foster sustainable business practices.

3.1. Environmental Impact Assessment

There are different programs and models, such as Life Cycle Analysis, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Energy Audit among others, to identify environmental impacts, comply with environmental legislation, establish operational controls, and minimize the environmental impacts. Although it is a systematic process, Environmental Impact Assessment focuses significantly on the initial phases of a corporate project and does not generally require the use of any specific environmental tool. Such considerations signify differences in the deployment of these types of programs or models. It is not possible to say that an organization is active in environmental management only because it has adopted some sustainable business practice. In order to define strategies for the recovery of these impacts, we need to identify and assess impacts. In this context, this chapter develops a process for integrating environmental impacts of enterprise projects. The purpose of the developed process is to reduce the environmental impacts of the projects before operations commence. Like the commitment of top management, goal-setting, and continuous improvement can be considered the most significant factors in the effectiveness of environmental management.

3.2. Social Impact Assessment

Social Impact Assessment is a part of classic Strategic Environmental Assessment used to measure the effect on social life. The signal of a corporate organization's relationship created through social interaction with all its stakeholders, which deliberately has any concerns about the quality and/or quantity of social attitudes from direct or explicit communication, is generally referred to as social activity. Social impact evaluation measures both positive and negative outcomes, both expected and unexpected. This should be taken into account when large-scale activities have the potential for influence. The social impact assessment helps stakeholders in the decision of the need to better understand the effects on society. Non-governmental organizations have become widely funded worldwide through a process of enhancing economic performance and associating donors in the corporate decision-making process. Social impact requirements are largely focused on the analysis of strengths and limitations and on the choice of interventions which result in an equitable distribution of effects on targeted and/or marginalized groups. The private sector has also begun to recognize the implications of social and sustainable development, and social responsibility and positive impact on society. Methods used branches of social activity can overlap with various theories and topics in this area because human involvement exists through any social theory or practice. The emphasis of development has switched to the enforcement of a desired society that places more highlight on balancing development goals instead of economic growth and on increasing the emerging interaction between the state, the private, and non-governmental sectors. Periods where businesses fluctuate from the positive external socioeconomic impacts to exerting pressures on local strength and regional services are called negative consequences or activities, also referred to as the decline of corporate assistance. Archive business strategies lay down the grounds for enhancing the possible positive and negative influences of corporate project ventures.

4. Integration of Impact Management into Business Strategies

To incorporate impact management into their business practice, companies should consider impacts in the same way that they consider other elements of their business model, such as revenues, costs, customer benefits, and assets. Impact should be a criteria in decision-making, just as margin or scalability are used now. In addition, to consider trade-offs and maximize the balance of positive impacts and negative impacts, businesses can actually use the same reasons to model to approaches they use for financial or environmental performance. The logic model includes seven stages, which are planning, organization, agent, input, activities, output, and outcomes and impacts. The logic model provides a simple clarification of expectations, relationships, and process which can guide strategy and action. Our typical framework provides such guidance. In addition, to produce a concise summary, the logic model can specify the components of a performance that support operational decisions and prioritize potential impacts for management attention. There is a positive relationship between environmental and financial performance. Firms with strong environmental performance, as measured by the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxic Release Inventory, have higher financial and stock performance than their low environmental performance counterparts. Companies implementing environmental management systems that comply with the International Organization for Standardization's ISO 14001 standard also experience greater stock market returns. In terms of operational benefits, environmental management yields cost savings, risk management, improved competitive position, and internal efficiencies.

5. Case Studies and Best Practices

Multiple companies across sectors have successfully integrated and benefited from environmental and social risk management practices using innovative and customized approaches. Eastman Chemical Company and SustainValue found that robust materials analysis isolates critical regulatory constraints that the Circular Economy initiative faces and the need for a policy framework within which stakeholders together can design feasible solutions and business opportunities across the value chain. The companies found that some enhanced value opportunities are accessible and bring the proprietary risk of inflection point adjustment to Circular Economy competition challenges over horizontal sustainability criteria. These first movers are positioned to drive incremental growth strategies and seize the investment opportunity from the long horizon for generic value initiation, financing at the value of environment spending and cost savings over the short horizon uptake of process innovations. Researchers and industries can further evaluate use cases that are defined by these initial insights. These companies found value-creation opportunities by redefining waste disposal to waste handling.

6. Conclusion and Future Directions

Under the dominant mainstream economic approach to business and investment, social and environmental performance mainly play an instrumental role in achieving financial returns. Impact investment, however, deliberately selects investment opportunities that strive to achieve positive social and environmental impacts while also aiming for financial returns. Its focus on outcomes rather than inputs is compelling, particularly in the face of sustainability challenges, such as climate change, that require investors to consider the long-term positive or negative outcomes of their investments. In this paper, we go beyond established ESG measurement and assessment tools that are tailored to publicly listed companies to illustrate how impact investors propose to avoid or solve social and environmental problems, and manage the risks and tensions that might arise in implementation. Although impact investors claim that their investments outperform traditional investments, we note that this claim has not been conclusively evidenced and point out that the value of impact management processes needs to be evaluated alongside social and environmental performance. We argue that impact investment should not only consider outcomes but also input quality. Using the example of sustainable food and agriculture investments, we show that healthy inputs, including the quality of social and environmental relationships, make a more significant positive contribution to resilience and the long-term health of food ecosystems. Regulations to ensure transparency about input quality would benefit both conventional and impact investors, businesses, society, and the environment. Furthermore, these discussions should not be confined to private financial markets; rather, they are also relevant in the context of publicly listed companies, whose sustainability measurement and reporting systems could also benefit. Notwithstanding positive impact intentions, impact management processes and practices could inadvertently result in less ethical behavior and investment in less fragile landscapes. Increasing transparency about the building blocks of quality impact would support better processes and practices which, in turn, would contribute to achieving positive long-term conditions.
