LONDON, United Kingdom — In Part Two of BoF’s Fashion Business Basics, Imran Amed explains the importance of a business plan and how to approach writing one.

KEY LEARNINGS: A business plan is an essential tool, not just for raising investment, but also for clarifying your goals and objectives, and communicating these to your wider team of employees, business partners and clients. There are five essential components:

Executive Summary: The executive summary is at the beginning of your business plan, but should be the last thing you write. It encapsulates all the key points, ideas and objectives of your business in a very short and concise "elevator pitch."

Vision & Objectives: This section will help investors, and anyone else reading your business plan, understand what particular market need you are going after and what you will offer that is unique and differentiated.

ADVERTISEMENT

Market & Competitive Landscape: This section describes the market that you plan to operate in. How big is the market? How fast is it growing and what evidence do you have that this part of the market is a viable opportunity? You also need to identify who the competitors in the market are, whether they are growing and what their position is in the market. What are you going to do that is different?

Implementation Plan: This is probably the most detailed section of your business plan, identifying the specific actions that your business will take to go after the market opportunity you have identified. Ideally, it should cover three years of activity, on a seasonal basis, and should include everything from how you communicate as a business and the staff you will hire, to the space you will need and the outside expertise you will require, in terms of marketing, communications or PR.

Financials: Your financial plan shows how your business will grow in terms of both profit and revenue and what financing you will need to make it happen. An income statement uses projections of how your business will grow at the top line, through sales and other revenues, and will also project the costs of delivering that growth. The cash flow statement shows the peaks and troughs of your cash situation on a monthly basis and identifies what funding you will need to finance growth.

Running a fashion business is challenging and time-consuming, but the results can fulfill your dreams – if you are committed to sticking to your plan. A business plan for opening your own fashion studio must include an executive summary, company vision, market and competitive analysis, and the ways your company will position itself to take advantage of your targeted market.

The Executive Summary

The executive summary of your fashion business plan is the equivalent of an elevator pitch that boils everything down to two paragraphs. It should include the name of your fashion business, the area where you want to operate, the type of clothes and accessories you plan to create, and your target market.

For example, if you were designing high-end, haute couture dresses, your summary could include, “XYZ Haute Couture will cater to wealthy women from 40 to 55 in San Francisco. Our location in the heart of Union Square will help us attract the wealthiest shoppers in the city who are looking for designer-quality clothing at less-than-market prices.”

Express Your Vision and Selling Proposition

This section helps prospective investors understand the type of clothes and accessories you’re going to offer in your fashion business and the market that you want to attract. For example, if you’re going to make hip-hop street wear, you must explain how that street wear will meet the wants, needs and tastes of your targeted market. More importantly, you must also express a unique selling proposition, which is the thing you believe will set your clothes apart from anyone else in the industry. For instance, if your hip-hop street wear is made using sustainable fabrics, it can help differentiate and brand your fashion business.

Create Your Market Analysis

Defining your target market is essential to helping prospective investors understand how they will get a return on their investment. The biggest mistake fashion designers make is to define their market too broadly. For example, if you’re designing comfortable beachwear and you write that your target market is “women between 30 and 45 who love spending time at the beach,” you’ve failed the target market test, because your market is too broad and undefined.

To make it more specific and targeted, you would write that your target market is, “active women between 30 and 45 who earn $50,000 or more per year and spend an average of $2,000 per year on casual clothing and accessories.” Your market analysis must also explain how your business will capitalize on existing fashion trends, how your pricing structure compares to that of your main competitors, and how your business will fulfill an untapped niche in the market.

Explain Your Manufacturing Process

Designing fashion is one thing, but manufacturing clothes and accessories for a product line requires a detailed plan. Questions you must answer in this section of your plan include: Where will you manufacture your clothes? Have you obtained estimates with several manufacturing companies? If you’re using an overseas manufacturing company, how does the pricing structure change when converted into American dollars?

Explain Your Distribution Process

After you’ve made plans to design and manufacture your clothes and accessories, you have to explain your distribution plan. You may want to hire a distributor to help you gain access to retail stores in the area as well as big trade shows where you can showcase your designs and secure orders from independent fashion retailers.

Include Your Financial Plan

Your fashion company’s financial plan must include financial statements that show the relative health of the business and provide investors and lenders with vital company data. An income statement shows how much revenue the designer expects to generate, as well as the costs the designer expects to encounter as the clothing line develops. The financial plan should also include a break-even analysis that tells investors the threshold of profitability.

It will be published on September 19, as part of IMAGE magazine, a living document of how L.A.’s creative forces — style, fashion, culture — are impacting the world. With a strong tie to the city of L.A., IMAGE reveals what’s new, what’s now and what’s next. IMAGE is distributed to 387,000 paid print and digital subscribers with bonus distribution to luxury hotels in and around West Los Angeles.

We invite you to nominate remarkable individuals for consideration. The B2B Publishing executive committee will profile select individuals for their successes and accomplishments based on the following criteria:

  • Noteworthy successes and accomplishments during the last 12-24 months
  • Consistent demonstration of strong leadership throughout the span of his/her career
  • Long- and short-term impact he/she has made to their organization’s and/or the industry’s growth
  • Community involvement and board memberships that showcase the nominee’s leadership beyond their organization

Below are the five most common legal structures:

1) Sole proprietorship

This means that the corporation pays taxes on its profits, and the shareholders also pay taxes on their dividends.

5) S Corporation

An S Corporation is a type of corporation that provides its owners with limited liability protection and allows them to pass their business income through to their personal income tax returns, thus avoiding double taxation. There are several limitations on S Corporations including the number of shareholders they can have among others.

It is important to establish a bank account in your fashion business name. This process is fairly simple and involves the following steps:

  • Identify and contact the bank you want to use
  • Gather and present the required documents (generally include your company’s Articles of Incorporation, driver’s license or passport, and proof of address)
  • Complete the bank’s application form and provide all relevant information
  • Meet with a banker to discuss your business needs and establish a relationship with them

9. Get a Business Credit Card

You should get a business credit card for your fashion business to help you separate personal and business expenses.

You can either apply for a business credit card through your bank or apply for one through a credit card company.

  • Fire Department Approval : a process by which the local fire department reviews and approves the installation of a fire alarm system.

Depending on the type of fashion business you launch, you will have to obtain the necessary state, county, and/or city licenses.

11. Get Business Insurance for Your Fashion Business

Other business insurance policies that you should consider for your fashion business include:

While only 14 years old, On Running has exploded onto the scene, breaking through the stronghold of competitors and becoming one of the most popular running sneakers in the world. Can it pull off big promises around sustainability at the same clip?

At its headquarters in Zurich, environmental principles are visible on the surface: recycling, solar-powered electricity and a community garden are all fixtures of the several-floor compound, and biking, walking and even swimming to work are norms for employees. When it comes to the product, however, those goals are not as simple to execute — footwear has been relatively stagnant in reducing its environmental impacts, largely because of the need for technical performance and a lack of eco-friendly solutions to provide it.

Then there’s the issue of growth, the pursuit of which is one of the key obstacles to sustainability in the fashion industry at large. On’s current rapid-growth period seems at risk of negating the benefits of any product-level sustainability efforts it may have underway.

Begüm Kürkçü, global director of sustainability at On, says the company is up for the challenge of growing product sales while reducing its footprint alongside. “Our impact is getting bigger because we are going to produce more products [and] sell more products. That’s why there’s a heavy focus on how we can reduce our impact per product,” says Kürkçü, adding that the brand’s main impact comes from materials and processes, so she feels bringing the focus there internally will help them achieve overall-impact-reduction goals.

From 2022 to 2023, On reported that net sales increased by 46.6 per cent to CHF 1.8 billion ($2 billion), which is in no small part thanks to a 45.5 per cent growth in apparel profits — the brand placed a major focus on the division by hiring Belgium fashion designer Tim Coppens in 2022. At On, Coppens is responsible for a shift into the luxury sportswear space with a popular Loewe collaboration . “The level of how we look at materials, whether it’s [at] the lower price point or the higher, it’s still made with the intention to last,” says Coppens.

But when the most sustainable thing to do is produce less, where does that leave a company focused on sustainability yet also set to expand with 100 new stores by the end of 2025?

Experts aren’t entirely convinced that a brand can do both, suggesting that per-product impact may not be enough. Innovation should be encouraged, but what matters is the net effect, says Maxine Bédat, executive director of think tank New Standard Institute. Do they add up to change the big picture? “The planet does not compute individual product innovations. What the planet notices is greenhouse gas emissions,” she says.

Rapid growth in the sustainable apparel and footwear space certainly isn’t new; however, recently, there have been clear examples of the pitfalls of those promises. Allbirds, a B corp-certified natural material sneaker brand, reported a 14.7 per cent decrease in revenue in 2023, resulting in plummeting stock prices. Coppens feels that On is considering those potential hurdles and curving them through innovation and ever-changing aesthetics.

“[It’s about asking] how do we tap into a way of dressing that other brands may have done, but not from our perspective as a sportswear brand?” he says. “It comes down to teams and how you inspire them to be part of that journey. It’s a constant exploration. [Yes] the product is good, but if you can’t really convey the energy that continuously has to be there, then at some point it just dies.”

Kürkçü, who previously held positions at the United Nations and at PVH Corp, says she has a plan of her own: textile innovation, a more aggressive focus on emissions and developing end-of-life solutions. CleanCloud, for example, dubbed the brand’s flagship sneaker line, uses carbon emissions to produce Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) foam, via working with Lanzatech to capture and convert industrial emissions before they enter the atmosphere.

The sportswear brand is also focused on supply chain transparency, in the form of a newly rolled out “ responsible manufacturing blueprint ” — a collaborative, three-tier approach with suppliers, particularly in Vietnam, to combat “audit fatigue”. (Kürkçü says suppliers are publicly listed, but more on due diligence standards will be available to the public from June.)

Now, it’s about embedding these principles into the everyday work of all employees, she says. Kürkçü points to the brand’s partnership with Carbonfact, a software programme that allows designers to see the carbon impact of their pieces during the design stage — from the materials to the process of getting it to market and even its end of life. “We onboarded all the designers in footwear. That was the first part since it’s 90 per cent of our business. And the second piece will be [onboarding] apparel teams.”

She went on to add that having individual team members acknowledge the full scope of a product’s impact, will likely improve overall sustainability goals. “Putting numbers next to their design in terms of impact is a very different way of looking at things moving forward.” The exact outcomes of this programme are yet to be reported, but Kürkçü believes this buy-in will contribute more widely for On.

On Running is trying to tackle circularity in a way other brands have not yet been able to, she flags: “Lots of cool things are happening, but if you ask me, is it happening in the big scale? Then no.” Kürkçü says the brand will launch several pilots that could include more recycling programmes, alongside its current subscription service, Cyclon, which as of this week includes a shirt, two running shoes and a pair of walking shoes. The sneakers are, in part, made from bio-based materials like castor beans, among other recycled components. Rental and peer-to-peer reselling are also likely in the pipeline. “When we look at circularity, we want to focus on three elements: circular design, circular business models and a strong operational backbone for scale.”

Kürkçü says that conveying this energy to employees throughout the supply chain, both in retail and in factories, is also part of it. “I think with the brand becoming bigger and the scopes getting bigger, there will be interesting challenges ahead of us. It’s not just about the product ultimately, right?” she says. “There are a lot of people working on a pair of shoes who probably never really see that shoe in its full context of how it was ideated in the beginning… that vision is super important.”
