Essay – Visit to a Historical Place

During the summer vacation, our Historical Society arranged a visit to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. A tourist bus was got reserved. We had a safe and comfortable journey to Agra. It was the full moon night when we reached there.

The Taj is a magnificent building, made of white marble. It is situated on the bank of the river Yamuna. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaj Mahal. Twenty thousand labourers worked for twenty two years to build it. The main gateway to the Taj is a three-storeyed building. It stands on a platform of red stone.

From there a causeway leads to the monument. The cause way has a water channel, with fountains in the middle and a double row of cypress trees on either side. There is a big white dome in the middle with four stately minarets on its four sides. Verses from holy Quran are graved on walls. Visitors come to see the Taj and read from every stone the story of the true love of the Queen and the Emperor. The beautiful building is surrounded by a garden.

The Taj looks beautiful at any time, but at night it is no doubt, a sight to see. It glitters in the moonlight and looks like a palace of silver. The Taj is, indeed, the loveliest work of art in the whole world. It is a poem is stone. It in one of the seven wonders of the world.

Essay – A Bus Stand Scene

A bus stand presents a very lovely and busy scene. It is like a museum of human faces and fashion. Last Sunday, I went to see off my friend at the bus stand. There was a great rush. Buses were arriving and departing.

The bus for Delhi had not yet arrived. So we had to wait. There was a great rush of passengers. They were waiting for their buses. There was a lot of rushing, pushing shouting and wrangling every where. The ladies were sitting in groups. Children were playing here and there. Vendors and hawkers were selling newspapers and eatables. They were also shouting at the top of their voices. There was a rush at the water tap, tea stalls and book stalls. We went to a tea stall. We took tea.

We bought two books to pass time. There were long queues at the booking windows. Soon our bus arrived. I bought a ticket for my friend. He boarded the bus and got a seat near the window. The driver took his seat. The conductor gave a whistle and the bus started. I wished good-bye to my friend.

Television is a device with a small screen. It shows programmes that are relayed by T.V. Stations or satellites. Television is a wonderful gift of science to man. It has become very common these days. It is the greatest wonder of science. It gives us sound as well as picture. It provides us entertainment in the comfortable surroundings of our house. We can see T.V. serials, pictures, tele-films, film songs and other entertaining programmes on television.

Apart from entertainment, television is a source of knowledge also.We can know the latest news of India and other countries. Lovers of games can watch games being played. Often there is direct telecast of some games. But television has its some disadvantages also. It has a bad effect on the eyes of children. It is playing havoc with the younger generation. They become addicted to T.V. Excess of every thing is bad. So some people call it an idiot box also.

Essay on Books

Books are an important resource for many people who have a keen interest in gaining knowledge on a variety of subjects. There are certain bibliophile‘s who love the smell of old books. They find that the smell of an old book is similar to that of dust and they can smell a whole lot of culture and history in those pages. There is a word in the dictionary for loving the smell of old books and that is - Bibliosmia. Books are meant to get a quick escape from ourselves and our surroundings which might feel troublesome at times. Books help in enriching the brain with various kinds of information and it imparts the kind of knowledge that becomes useful in our day to day lives.

Reading extensively makes a person an intellectual, it enables him/her to view society and the things happening within the society in an intellectual manner. People who read books have an excellent character and other people find them attractive and easy to talk to as they can talk about any topic given the situation and circumstances. Reading books helps in the overall development of the brain as well as the character.

History of Books

Books introduce us to a world of wisdom and knowledge. Nowadays knowledge can be gained from anywhere as books have gone through years of evolution. The first book that was ever printed was the Gutenberg bible, it was printed in 1455. In primitive times, men learned how to read and write, they saw the need for writing which helped them to record transactions, send messages to their loved ones who lived afar, they made certain discoveries and wrote about them on various manuscripts.

Manuscripts are the most ancient form of paper that was used to write important information, it was made of the papyrus plant. They were introduced in Egypt and many kings and queens hired writers to write about their glorious Egyptian empires and about the wars that they had won. These manuscripts also contain information about various transactions that were made in the court and this depicts their trading lifestyle, Egyptian economy and their religion, after doing analysis we can find that Egyptians were very similar to Roman beliefs. All the little information that we know today about ancient times is because of these manuscripts, they are the only source for knowing our past closely.

Then came the 1900s when people started hand stitching books, this process made the books extremely expensive to purchase. In the 1930s some publishers like the Penguin publishers started to glue their books together which helped in reducing the cost of production, which then made the books affordable for everybody.

Now as we are moving towards a digitalised era, we can now download any book that we want to read through the Internet, the books are available in PDF and other various versions, With the coming up of Kindle, people started reading books on the Kindle tablet, enabling readers to reach a wide range of genres all while sitting at the comfort of their home. Books occupy a significant meaning in our lives and people should share their books with others or the information that they gathered while reading a particular book as such knowledge can become an inspiration for others and they might start reading as well.

More About Books

If one has enough books, then the person can never be friendless. Books are one of the biggest friends that one can ever ask for. It has helped to evolve mankind since time immemorial. Books which are good in subject matter and quality can be a storehouse of wisdom and information. They enrich our hearts and souls. Some books can leave a permanent mark in our lives. Yet, they are unbelievably inexpensive. So, everyone can afford at least some good books. Those who cannot afford too many books can always visit the library.

Starting Early

My parents have always encouraged me to read books ever since I learnt to read. There are books to suit readers of all age groups. Also, there are books on various subjects. No matter what interests you, there is going to be a book in that subject. So, once we pick a book that interests us, we can get hours with it.

Advantages of Reading Books

A regular reader can enhance his or her knowledge on an array of subjects. It helps us to learn a lot of new things about the subjects that interest us. And it is a fun way to explore a new world in a fun way. So learning with entertainment is a perk of reading regularly. They can be a very powerful answer to boredom. Whenever I am alone, a book can be the only companion that we might be needing.

Moreover, the fact that different books deal with different subjects has an advantage. It allows us to explore different subject matters. It can help to identify our different aspects of interest. Our choice of books can also go a long way to decide on our career in the future.

Another important benefit of reading books is that it helps to improve our word power. We can read the works of different authors. This will make us come across different new words. By learning new words, we can nurture our vocabulary. When we use the newly learned works in day to day conversation, people do appreciate that. Also, it helps to improve our writing skills, as well.

With new words and new expressions empowering us, we can also participate in the debates, public speaking competitors, and the quiz sessions with more confidence than ever.

Different Types of Books

There seems to be a book for almost every subject under the sky. There are creations of literature, as well as academic books and travelogues. There are books on historical events, mythology, cookery, mechanics, astronomy, astrology, fashion, and whatnot. Though I love reading different genres of books, I have my own selection and favourites. Here's a lowdown on the different genres of books that I find interesting.

Folklore: Almost every country in the world has its bounty of rich folklore. They are evidence of the heritage of a country. Folklores are all about songs from the bygone days, ballads dedicated to the ancient kings, queens, princes and princesses, legends, myths, and traditional tales. In most cases, there is no known author of these folklores.

Fantasies: These are the fascinating takes of an imaginative world. Often, fantasies come with references to make-believe places. There are charming stories with beautiful yet imaginary countries in the background. We come across interesting characters and intriguing creatures. But none of them exist in the real world.

Science Fiction: The sci-fi tales are primarily based on real-life scientific facts and principles. Though the plots might be imaginary, the stories often have some true references to what might happen in the future.

Realistic Fiction: These are my favourite set of "what if" novels and stories. This genre comprises imaginary situations that might occur just anytime. The characters seem to be real, as well.

Biography: The themes of biographies revolve around the life of famous people. A biography comes with a person's memoirs, letters, journals, and the like.

My Favourite Book Essay – Essay on My Favourite Book for Class 6, Class 7

September 20, 2019 by Leya 2 Comments

Favourite Book Essay – Here are essays on some of the favourite books of Grade 6 and 7 students:

Table of Contents

Essay on My Favourite Book for Class 6

1. best read: diary of a wimpy kid.

My favourite book is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ as it is essentially a novel in cartoons. It is written and illustrated by the talented Jeff Kinney and is the first book in the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series. The book has also been adapted to a film.

This book is written in the form of diary entries of a boy named Greg Heffley who struggles to gain popularity in middle school. He strictly refers to the diary as a journal and intends to be rich and famous one day. The author takes the reader through hilarious incidents that take place at Greg’s school and home.

Rowley, Greg’s friend, gains popularity in school. Greg tries to take advantage of this and hence, ends up in situations that test their friendship.

One of the memorable incidents in the book is the discussion around the “Cheese Touch”. Greg narrates that someone had left a piece of cheese in school and it got mouldy. Anyone who touched it would have the “Cheese Touch” and would have to pass it on to someone else by touching them. Luckily the last person of the infamous “Cheese Touch” moved away!

Greg also introduces his family to the reader and narrates hilarious incidents involving his family members. The little adventure on which Greg and his friends embarked on Halloween day was really very funny.

Greg is not fond of Patty Farrel as she is always looking to get him into trouble. There are instances where he had a chance to get back at her, and these are some of the memorable parts of the book.

I like the fact that the book is written in a style that is very different from the conventional reads today. The storyline and illustrations strike a chord with the reader as they are able to relate to the incidents easily.

2. Favourite Book: Dork Diaries

Dork Diaries is a children’s book series that is written in the format of the diary of a 14-year old girl, Nikki Maxwell. The books have drawings, comic strips, and doodles of incidents from the girl’s life.

The first book of the ‘Dork Diaries’ series is my favourite. It narrates the life of Nikki Maxwell who is unhappy to attend Westchester Country Day, a middle school that her father arranges. She is unable to make friends among the wealthy children attending the school.

Nikki gets a locker right next to the most popular girl in school, MacKenzie Hollister, who calls her a dork. MacKenzie also tries to bully Nikki as and when she gets a chance. Nikki soon makes friends with two other girls, Chloe and Zoey. She also starts to like Brandon from school.

When Nikki enters an art show in school, she finds that MacKenzie will be competing with her and she is determined to win.

The book follows the life of Nikki through diary entries and comic strips. There are several hilarious descriptions of her family that made me laugh out loud. I really like the format of the book, wherein the monotony of the text is broken by the illustrations.

This is a very popular book across the world and has a large reader base among middle school children.

Essay on My Favourite Book for Class 7

1. best book: harry potter and the chamber of secrets.

I have read most of the books in the Harry Potter series and my favourite is ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’. This is the second novel in the series written by the famed author, J.K. Rowling.

The story of the book is as enchanting and mysterious as the other Harry Potter books. It narrates the incidents that take place during the second year of Harry’s studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

As Harry was packing his bags to return to school after a hideous summer, he gets warned by an impish creature, Dobby. The creature says that Harry will be in the midst of disaster if he returns to Hogwarts.

At Hogwarts, Harry has to tolerate a new professor, Gilderoy Lockhart. A spirit named Moaning Myrtle also starts haunting the girl’s bathroom. In the midst of all this, the children find a series of messages on the corridors of the school that mention the “Chamber of Secrets” being opened and the “heir of Slytherin” intending to kill students who do not belong to all-magical families. This is followed by attacks on the residents of the school.

Harry starts investigating the attacks with the help of his friends Ron and Hermione and has an amazing adventure that keeps the reader gripped to the novel. The book has been adapted into a film that has won a lot of accolades and received international acclaim. There are some video games loosely based on this book as well.

2. Not to be Missed: Percy Jackson – The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief is the first book of the ‘Percy Jackson’ series. I love this book as it is an intriguing mix of fantasy, action, and adventure.

The book narrates the adventures of a twelve-year-old boy named Percy Jackson who is unable to control his anger as he suffers from ADHD and dyslexia. He is also not able to focus on schoolwork.

Percy finds that his math teacher turns into a mythical creature and tries to attack him. He goes to a summer camp with his mom and friend Grover Underwood. There, his mother is taken away in a fight with a Minotaur. He rescues his friend and goes on to find out that he is a demigod, the son of the Greek god Poseidon and a mortal woman.

Percy goes to Camp Half Blood and makes friends with Luke Castellan and Annabeth Chase. Grover and Annabeth accompany Percy on a quest to find the missing lightning bolt of Zeus in order to avoid a war between the gods.

Percy locates the bolt and brings it back to Zeus on Mount Olympus. He rewards the boy by not killing him. Percy then spends the rest of the summer at the Half Blood Camp.

Subsequently, he finds the real thief of the lightning bolt and returns to his mother to spend the school year at home.

The book has been highly acclaimed throughout the world. It was also adapted into a movie. ‘The Lightning Thief’ had a number of sequels, owing to its popularity. All these books went on to receive positive reviews as well.

The Best Realistic Fiction Books for 6th Graders

essay books for class 6

Got a 6th grader or advanced elementary schooler who loves fiction rooted in reality? Then these realistic fiction books for 6th graders will interest you. Typically, 6th graders are new middle schoolers, many of whom are strong readers. Still, I like to recommend gentler fiction for kids in this age group. So on this list, you’ll find books that tackle serious issues in a sensitive way and some others that are just heaps of fun.

Look out for a graphic novel about moving and Black hair, a book about a house swap with many surprises, a story of a young Black boy who loves a good card game, and many more. I’ve added a little “award” containing subject/theme buzzwords for each book to help you match it to its perfect reader.

20 Fantastic Realistic Fiction Books for 6th Graders

Here are 20 realistic fiction options for 6th graders:

For the Animal Lover

Allergic: A Graphic Novel

Published: March 2, 2021

Let’s start with this crowd-pleaser! Allergic  is a sweet, realistic depiction of what it’s like to suffer with allergies. This graphic novel features stunning illustrations, a lovable protagonist, and  a rambunctious family .

Maggie loves animals and has been waiting patiently to get a dog, only to discover that she’s allergic. She’s also dealing with a changing family in which she feels less and less like she belongs. Her two little brothers are seemingly obsessed with each other and couldn’t care less about her. Her mother is heavily pregnant and excited for the new baby.

Maggie starts getting shots to get her allergies under control while on the hunt for a hypoallergenic pet. Things appear to be looking up when Maggie meets Claire, an only child living with her single dad, who indulges her every whim. Claire is one grade above Maggie, but the two become fast friends — until Claire gets a dog.

For the Math Whiz

AfterMath

Published: September 7, 2021

This is a sadder but important middle grade book with moments of levity in theater, school friendships, and repairing a fractured family.

In the aftermath of her little brother’s death, Lucy and her parents move to a small town that is still healing from a school shooting four years ago. It’s jarring for Lucy to be around all these kids who lost friends when they were in the third grade, but it’s even harder because, unlike the situation in her home, the kids talk a lot about the shooting, their grief, and seeing therapists.

However, in all their sharing, the students have cast the shooter’s younger sister and their classmate, Avery — whom Lucy befriends — as an outsider. Will Lucy ever find her place and deal with her grief?

Funny with Plenty of Heart

No Fixed Address

No Fixed Address

Published: September 11, 2018

12-year-old Felix Knuttson is a sweet kid whose brain soaks up trivia like a sponge. His mom Astrid (whom he calls by her name), is loving but unreliable and can’t seem to hold on to a job or a house. When they lose their apartment in Vancouver, Astrid “borrows” a camper van from an ex and moves them in there “just for August” until she finds a job.

But September comes, and there’s still no job or house, and Felix needs an address to enroll in school. Astrid figures out a way to do that, but Felix can’t tell anyone about their home situation. At the new school, he makes two new friends and finds out about a trivia contest that might change their housing situation. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned.

I loved this one so much but heads up for some content issues . Please read my full review before purchasing.

Perfect for the Foodie

The Thing About Leftovers

The Thing About Leftovers

Published: July 19, 2016

Although the start of this one was a bit slow for me, I warmed up at about the 15% mark — and then I loved every word. Fizzy is the daughter of divorced parents. Her father has remarried, and her mother is in a serious relationship. Fizzy is also an excellent cook — so good that she’s entering the Southern Living cook-off. But she has other struggles to contend with.

At school, she doesn’t have any real friends, and then her mom announces that she’s marrying her boyfriend, Keane (whom Fizzy dislikes). Fizzy also has to shuttle between both parents’ homes, and she’s constantly feeling like the “leftover” child since both her parents are moving on and forming new families.

Eventually, she does make two friends at school, a Japanese-American girl Miyoko, and a foster kid named Zach. As she gets to know both kids, Fizzy realizes that family comes in different shapes and sizes — and that each family has its quirks. But will she finally find her place in hers?

For the Friendship (or Hair) Enthusiast

Culfriends: New in Town

Curlfriends: New in Town (A Graphic Novel) (Curlfriends, 1)

Published: October 10, 2023

Charlie is the new kid for the umpteenth time, but this time things will be different. Her dad is no longer in the military, and this is a more permanent home, so she feels more pressure to find and impress some new friends. When she meets a cool group of Black girls with varying interests, she decides to hide her “babyish” style and hobbies to befriend them. But she soon learns that with true friends, you can be your whole self.

I love that this book exists because there are so few stories about Black hair for middle schoolers, and I love how different all four girls are and the fact that the story is about mundane day-to-day life, which is rare for POC stories. This is a cute first book in a new graphic novel series perfect for readers looking for stories about Black hair, girlfriends, fashion, and adjusting to change.

For Coping with a Friend Break-Up

My Not-So-Great French Escape

My Not-So-Great French Escape

Published: March 14, 2023

My Not-So-Great French Escape  is a funny, emotional, and adventure-filled book about changing friendships, cultivating self-worth, and learning the value of hard work. It does start a bit slow, but the protagonist has. a nice sense of humor that propels the story.

Rylan agrees to work as a farm hand in France in order to reconnect with his used-to-be best friend, Wilder. Both their moms are friends, and Wilder’s wealthier mom is happy to pay Rylan’s way. Wilder and Rylan’s friendship has been shaky since Wilder has been ditching Rylan for the cool kids. And the trip is about to get more complicated when Rylan’s mom tells him that his estranged father lives in France and wants to reconnect with him.

When they arrive in France, Wilder quickly joins a different group of kids on the farm from Rylan’s deflating his hopes of reconnecting. Rylan has to find his way and decide whether or not to meet his dad. Will his French escape be worth it?

For Finding Your Voice

Make a Move, Sunny Park!

Make a Move, Sunny Park!

Published: August 15, 2023

Sunny Park is a socially anxious girl obsessed with her favorite K-Pop band, Supreme Beat. She has one friend, Bailey, and tries to be there as much as possible (to a fault) for her—even when it means quitting ballet which she loved.

But when Bailey drags her to audition for her school’s dance team, Sunny gets in, and Bailey doesn’t. Sunny’s mom insists that Sunny continues on the team, to Bailey’s dismay. As Sunny makes new friends, she starts to realize that maybe Bailey isn’t such a great one.

This was a fun, relatable (at times frustrating) story about standing up for oneself, dance, fandom, and finding true friends. Like  Kim’s Yumi Chung , this is on the longer side, but Sunny is an engaging character who I think young readers will identify with.

For the Anxious Artist

Drawing Deena

Drawing Deena

Published:  February 6, 2024

Deena struggles with anxiety (although she doesn’t know that’s what it’s called yet). She likes to paint and wants to be an artist when she grows up (even though her parents don’t think it’s a real career). They have some financial challenges, so Deena decides to help promote her mom’s business using art and social media.

But when things pick up and her cousin who’s modeling her mother’s merchandise, starts getting plenty of attention, there’s an extra reason for anxiety. Soon Deena realizes that she can ask for help. Like everything Hena Khan writes, this book is warm and relatable and centers a Pakistani-American family. Hand to fans of Amina’s Voice and kids who want stories about anxiety.

For the Future Gardener

The Summer of June

The Summer of June

Published: May 31, 2022

Meet June Delancey. June is tired of having anxiety rule her life and has made a plan to kick it to the curb this summer. She’s going to put herself out there—she and her fierce single mom who works at the library. Fortunately, June meets Homer, a middle school boy who loves reciting poetry and believes in June! But there are a few bumps in the road for June. Will she win this summer?

I loved how realistic, heartrending, and satisfying this story is. If you’re looking for a book about anxiety (June is so anxious she pulls her hair out—LITERALLY), summer, and friendship set in the library (June’s mom works there!), don’t miss this one!

Unlikely Friends Unite

Honeybees and Frenemies

Honeybees and Frenemies

Published:  June 4, 2019

Flor’s parents’ mattress store is struggling this summer, and her parents are fighting more than ever. The summer seems to get brighter when she gets a chance to be in their town’s local honey pageant with her frenemy (former friend turned bitter enemy) Candice. The girls’ friendship was ruined when Flor won the pageant in third grade, and Candice (the runner-up) suggested that she only won because she was half-Indian. Can the girls make it work now? And with Flor make it through the summer with her family intact?

This is a warm, humorous, and relatable middle grade  book about bees , family, and frenemies.

The Relatable Graphic Memoir

Four Eyes: A Graphic Novel (Four Eyes #1)

Published:  May 2, 2023

Sixth grade is off to a rocky start for Rex. His district moved most of his elementary school to another middle school, his best friend ditches him for the popular crew, and his blurry vision means he has to get clunky new glasses–the only kind his family can afford. This sweet graphic novel  for fans of Telgemeier  is an ode to middle school, family, and finding your people.

Sibling Drama

Twin Cities

Twin Cities: (A Graphic Novel)

Published: July 19, 2022

Twins Teresa and Fernando are starting 6th grade on different paths. Teresa is ready for some independence and is happy to start school in the US, just across the border, while her twin loves being part of a duo and is remaining in Mexico because he thinks most of his friends are staying too. As Teresa crosses the border daily for school while facing new challenges, and Fernando attends middle school without a friend, both kids need each other more than ever.

This is a beautiful graphic novel in terms of art and story! It’s the best kind of slice-of-life story, with both kids’ lives depicted in separate panels, complete with representations of Mexican food and scenes. Heads up for a teeny content issue (one of the kids is offered weed by a friend and does take it — although this is implied), but it’s portrayed in a very negative light.

For the Dance Fan

Freestyle: A Graphic Novel

Published: October 18, 2022

Cory’s dance crew is getting ready for a major competition. It’s the last one before they graduate eighth grade and go their separate ways to high schools all over New York City, so they have to make it count! The group starts to have problems as their crew captain gets increasingly intense about nailing the routine, and things go from bad to worse when Cory’s parents ground him for not taking his grades seriously.

He gets stuck with a new tutor, Sunna, who he dismisses as a boring nerd… until he catches her secretly practicing cool yo-yo tricks. Cory wants to learn the art of yo-yo, and as his friendship with Sunna grows, he ends up missing practice and bailing on his crew — and they are not happy about it. With mounting pressure coming from all sides, how is Cory supposed to balance the expectations of his parents, school, dance, and his new friend?

Rethinking Body Image

A Work in Progress

A Work in Progress

Will feels like the only chubby kid in his class and feels insecure about his weight. Add to that the bullying he faces and his observations of his mother’s attitude toward food, and he falls into a pattern of disordered eating and over-exercising. Thankfully, a budding friendship with a new classmate changes his view. This is a great book about body image issues, and it’s done in an illustrated verse format that I think kids will love.

A Protagonist to Root For

The Wild Journey of Juniper Berry

The Wild Journey of Juniper Berry | A Middle Grade Book for Kids to Learn about Animals, Nature, and Surviving Middle School

Published:  August 15, 2023

Juniper and her family live off-the-grid, and she loves it. Her mom has warned her that life in society is stressful, but Juniper’s older sister still wants to try living there. Unfortunately, regardless of the family’s desires, they all have to move to the nearest town when their youngest family member becomes seriously ill. Juniper’s dad even has to work to pay the hospital bills while the girls live with their uncle and his daughters.

It turns out that school is hard for Juniper. The kids treat her like a weirdo, and her cousin doesn’t even want to be seen with her — she prefers to hang out with the kids who bully her. Juniper wants to help her dad pay the bills, so she gets a job helping a neighbor with her garden and starts a YouTube channel to teach people about the woods, which leads to more bullying but also heartwarming surprises.

I loved learning about off-the-grid living, and this one reminded me a lot of Carr’s 365 Days to Alaska . This is one of my favorite books this year, and I think kids will love learning about Juniper.

For the Business Savvy

The Do-Over

The Do-Over (Do-Over, 1)

Published: May 23, 2023

Mariana is a shy girl looking for friends in a new town. Things seem to be looking up when she befriends two creative kids, and they start running a salon together. Soon, though, they have more demand than they can keep up with. This is a great graphic novel for kids who are always thinking about starting a business, love being creative, or just love a good graphic novel.

The Perfect Cozy Read

The House Swap

The House Swap

Published:  February 28, 2023

Allie and Sage are forced together when their families’ plan to swap houses goes awry. Allie is a British girl living in the countryside and preparing to be a spy when she grows up. She’s also the (overlooked, she feels) middle child, stuck between a teen brother and a talkative little sister.

Sage is an only child in sunny California, growing up with parents who seem to be growing apart. She gets more worried when she discovers that only her mom will be coming with her to the English countryside. Both girls realize that they have more in common than they think and decide to help each other — Ally with Sage’s parents and Sage with being Allie’s friend.

This is a cozy, charming middle grade book about family (history & secrets), new friendships, and  navigating parental divorce . Reminiscent of the beloved movie,  The Holiday , this middle grade book is perfect for anyone looking for a  feel-good reading  experience

From the Bully’s POV

Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone

Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone

Published:  April 26, 2022

Tae Keller’s newest middle grade book,  Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone , opens with new girl Jennifer Chan declared missing at her middle school. As whispers begin, her next-door neighbor Mallory Moss worries that Jennifer may have been abducted by aliens (which Jennifer believed existed). Mallory reunites with two former friends begging them to help her find Jennifer following clues from her time with Jennifer and the diary Jennifer left behind.

The story alternates between past and present as readers discover that Mallory’s search is also motivated by an ulterior motive: the need to prove that she and her popular friends didn’t run Jennifer Chan out of town with their bullying.

A New Type of Masculinity

But she’s smart and tough and pretty and knows every card trick in the book. So Ant decides to join forces with Shirley — and keep his plans a secret.

Then Ant’s best friend gets grounded, and he’s forced to find another spades partner. And Shirley, the new girl in his class, isn’t exactly who he has in mind. She talks a whole lot of trash — way more than his old partner. Plus, he’s not sure that his father wants him to play with a girl. But she’s smart and tough and pretty and knows every card trick in the book. So Ant decides to join forces with Shirley — and keep his plans a secret.

Only it turns out secrets are another Joplin Man tradition. And his father is hiding one so big it may tear their family apart. I loved this one on audio and think it’s a fantastic pick for 6th graders about toxic masculinity, addiction, and male friendships.

6 Y.A. Novels That Open Conversations About Teen Chronic Illness

Maya Van Wagenen, the author of “Chronically Dolores,” shares her favorite young adult books that authentically represent being a teenager living with illness.

  • Share full article

This illustration showcases a teenager standing and reading a book. Over the teen’s torso and legs is an X-ray screen that shows her skeleton and a pink burst over her heart, implying she is dealing with a chronic illness.

By Maya Van Wagenen

Maya Van Wagenen’s debut novel, “Chronically Dolores,” is inspired by her experiences as a teenager with an incurable bladder condition.

Sometimes when you’re a teenager, you have to plan make-out spots around accessible public bathrooms. At least I did. As a kid with interstitial cystitis, I longed for books that reflected the experience of navigating high school with the added complication of an embarrassing, long-term condition. Where was my sassy heroine with a head full of plans and a bladder full of sores? And what about my friends with I.B.S., endometriosis and chronic fatigue? Don’t they deserve representation, too?

Fortunately, we’re starting to see more stories like these in mainstream publishing. Here are six Y.A. novels that authentically depict what it’s like to be a teenager with a chronic illness.

The Edge of Anything , by Nora Shalaway Carpenter

Sage, a high school volleyball star, is almost guaranteed a spot playing for her dream college after graduation, but a silent, genetic heart condition threatens to ruin everything. Then she meets Len, a junior who’s terrified that her thoughts and actions have the power to influence the destiny of the people she loves. The girls’ interwoven stories show the impact that socioeconomic status, family structures and community expectations have on how someone is able to get emotional support for a disability. This book is a must-read for anyone who is not sure what to say to, or how to help, someone grappling with a diagnosis.

Two Girls Staring at the Ceiling , by Lucy Frank

This stunning novel in verse tackles what it’s like to live with stomach problems. The premise is simple: Two teenage strangers stuck in the same hospital room go through treatment for Crohn’s disease. This story is real, painful and hilarious, and the author draws on her own life to create vibrant characters and impart helpful, often profane, advice. This one will particularly speak to anyone who’s ever been hospitalized.

Deenie , by Judy Blume

“Deenie,” a novel about a teenager with scoliosis, was first published in 1973, but the book’s portrayal of feeling betrayed by your own body is just as relevant now as it was 50 years ago. Blume has said that with “Deenie,” she wanted to explore the relationship between a teenager who’s coming to terms with the impact of a diagnosis and a parent who’s dramatically mourning the person her daughter could’ve been. This dynamic makes 13-year-old Deenie’s eventual acceptance of her body, and her decision to honor its needs, feel like a real triumph.

Breathe and Count Back From Ten , by Natalia Sylvester

The protagonist of this novel is Verónica, a high school senior with hip dysplasia. The painful condition holds her back on land, but she shines in water as an accomplished swimmer. She dreams of someday performing with the mermaid troupe at the lovably kitschy theme park in her Florida town, much to the chagrin of her Peruvian parents. When the theme park announces a mermaid audition, Verónica has to figure out what kinds of pain she can live with, both physically and emotionally. In this book, Sylvester beautifully illustrates the parallels of sexual and medical objectification, of being seen only as a collection of parts and not as a human being. As the story progresses, Verónica realizes that owning her body means being in control of decisions regarding how she cares for it, challenges it and shares it.

Cursed , by Karol Ruth Silverstein

At the beginning of “Cursed,” the protagonist, Ricky Bloom, declares that “pretty much no one gives a crap” about her disease. Overwhelmed by her diagnosis of juvenile arthritis, she has been skipping school in secret, but to avoid accruing so many absences that she’ll have to repeat ninth grade, she has to go back and face the unsympathetic administrators and asinine bullies waiting for her. Foulmouthed and fractious, Ricky is a pro at building protective emotional walls, but can she learn to love the vulnerable, hurting parts of herself that she tries so hard to hide? This book really highlights the role of advocacy and accommodations in improving someone’s life.

Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses , by Kristen O’Neal

A single tick bite completely derailed Priya’s freshman year at Stanford. Suddenly she’s home recovering from Lyme disease while taking comfort in an online chronic illness support group. But when a fellow member, Brigid, stops responding to messages, Priya steals the family car and crosses state lines to make sure she’s OK. Upon her arrival, however, Priya realizes the mysterious monthly illness Brigid told the group about is more complicated than she let on: Brigid is a werewolf. “Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses” is a funny, heartfelt book with a phenomenal premise, and it manages to represent a lot of identities and intersectionalities: trans and disabled, chronically ill and racial minority, queer and cryptid. At its core, the novel feels like a love letter to the internet communities that connect people; it’s a reminder that friendships, both virtual and in-person, can save lives.

500+ Words Essay on My Favourite Book

Essay on My Favourite Book: Books are friends who never leave your side. I find this saying to be very true as books have always been there for me. I enjoy reading books . They have the power to help us travel through worlds without moving from our places. In addition, books also enhance our imagination. Growing up, my parents and teachers always encouraged me to read. They taught me the importance of reading. Subsequently, I have read several books. However, one boom that will always be my favourite is Harry Potter. It is one of the most intriguing reads of my life. I have read all the books of this series, yet I read them again as I never get bored of it.

essay on my favourite book

Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter was a series of books authored by one of the most eminent writers of our generation, J.K. Rowling. These books showcase the wizarding world and its workings. J.K. Rowling has been so successful at weaving a picture of this world, that it feels real. Although the series contains seven books, I have a particular favourite. My favourite book from the series is The Goblet of fire.

When I started reading the book, it caught my attention instantly. Even though I had read all the previous parts, none of the books caught my attention as this one did. It gave a larger perspective into the wizarding world. One of the things which excite me the most about this book is the introduction of the other wizard schools. The concept of the Tri-wizard tournament is one of the most brilliant pieces I have come across in the Harry Potter series.

In addition, this book also contains some of my favourite characters. The moment I read about Victor Krum’s entry, I was star struck. The aura and personality of that character described by Rowling are simply brilliant. Further, it made me become a greater fan of the series.

What Harry Potter Series Taught Me?

Even though the books are about the world of wizards and magic, the Harry Potter series contains a lot of lessons for young people to learn. Firstly, it teaches us the importance of friendship. I have read many books but never come across a friendship like that of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron. These three musketeers stuck together throughout the books and never gave up. It taught me the value of a good friend.

Further, the series of Harry Potter taught me that no one is perfect. Everyone has good and evil inside them. We are the ones who choose what we wish to be. This helped me in making better choices and becoming a better human being. We see how the most flawed characters like Snape had goodness inside them. Similarly, how the nicest ones like Dumbledore had some bad traits. This changed my perspective towards people and made me more considerate.

Finally, these books gave me hope. They taught me the meaning of hope and how there is light at the end of the tunnel. It gave me the strength to cling on to hope in the most desperate times just like Harry did all his life. These are some of the most essential things I learned from Harry Potter.

In conclusion, while there were many movies made in the books. Nothing beats the essence and originality of the books. The details and inclusiveness of books cannot be replaced by any form of media. Therefore, the Goblet of Fire remains to be my favourite book.
