Executive Summary Recent adult immigrants 1 arrive in Canada but some find difficulty obtaining jobs or attaining employment in their fields of expertise. This prompts a substantial number to attend post-secondary education (PSE) to improve their Canadian credentials, where they often face access and completion barriers. This synthetic review is divided into two parts. The first part consists of two quantitative analyses of the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants in Canada (LSIC); the first examines the economic integration of recent ...

Most existing research indicates that working students perform more poorly than do full-time students on standardized achievement tests. However, we know there are wide international variations in this gap. This article shows that national and international contexts help to explain the gap in the academic performance between working and nonworking middle-school students. We combined data from the 2003 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study eighth-grade assessment with the countryspecific information on socioeconomic and educational conditions, as well as the timing of each country’s ratification of an international treaty regulating child labor. Our multilevel analyses show that, while student employment is generally negatively associated with academic performance, this negative association is smaller in countries that by 1995 had ratified the International Labour Organisation’s Convention 138 on child labor. These findings highlight the role of national and international policy in structuring the consequences of student employment for academic performance.

Vanessa Vinzon | Arnel Bias
Discipline: Education
The study aimed to determine the status of working students in Tanay Senior High School in the first semester of the 3-2 learning modality particularly SY 2022-2023. Likewise, to analyze the challenges and concerns of the working students and their teachers as well as the possible recommendations that surfaced to address the problems. Consequently, to come up with an action plan that would serve as an assistance to help the working students continue their studies in school. The researchers utilized a quantitative and qualitative descriptive type of research with the use of a researcher-made questionnaire supported bya focus group to solicit data from the respondents. There were two groups of respondents in the study, purposive sampling was utilized, the 10 class advisers handling working students and the 32 working students from different strands of Grade 11 and Grade 12 who were enrolled in SY 2022-2023. The findings of the study revealed that the employer of working students is aware that these students are currently enrolled in school. However, only 25% of students have an agreement or work contract with their employers while 75% of them are working without any agreement or contract. Moreover, only 12 students have a work plan made by the employer to avoid conflict with their class schedule while the rest of the 20 students have no concrete plan crafted, which indicates a future conflict on their class schedule particularly when the full swing face to face learning shallbe implemented. On the status of working students in terms of academic performance in the first semester, as perceived by their class advisers, the working students seemed to be performing despite the challenges of their work since the obtained overall mean in all 5 aspects is 3.06 with the verbal interpretation of “often”. This result signifies that the working students have the enthusiasm to learn and participate in the classroom discussion and were still able to pass their performances and assessments. Nonetheless, to submit activities on time and to attend class regularly got lowest mean obtained.

Time management is the ability of a person to balance things happening in their lives. It has a significant impact on the lives of the students especially for those who are working. Sometimes, they lack the supervision of parents and teachers and they work due to financial reasons. Working students do not have enough time to study and spend most of their time working. The researchers conducted this study to determine the effects of time management among working students of selected Grade 12 General Academic Strand (GAS) and to find solutions that might help them to manage the given variables. This research used descriptive design in such a way that the survey questionnaire was administered to fifty (50) working students of Grade 12 GAS students that were chosen purposively. The survey questionnaire was constructed to determine how time management affects the financial, academic performance and health of working students. Moreover, the theory of Maslow stating that efficient use of time helps people meet higher goals of fulfillment, spiritually and well being, but for the sake of interests, people gave up bigger things like agenda and self-satisfaction in life was utilized in this study. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively. Many respondents of this study agreed that there were effects of time management among working students. Students responded that their thinking process might not function well because of they are thinking of work and school activities at the same time. This is one of the most common factors that affected the student's working nature. In the academic performance, respondents stressed that they were unable to answer the questions given by their teachers due to lack of time for review. Lastly, in terms of financial factors, they needed to budget their money wisely for their everyday expenses or needs. The results ask for recommendations that may help working students manage their time well. The researchers gave these recommendations: students should know their priorities and should focus on important things that were needed completion the most and they should budget their time on study and work.
