Hello lovely students! In this article, I’ll be showing you what the 23 helping verbs are and why we use them.

Why do we use helping verbs?

Helping verbs, also known as auxiliary verbs, are used for many reasons in English. They allow us to construct sentences and questions and to demonstrate times. They also help us to differentiate between active and passive voice and question tags.

You must think of helping verbs like this: they are there only to support the main verb and for no other reason.

Remembering this is vital, as some helping verbs are also action verbs.

Let’s take a look at common helping verbs, do and have . Do and have are also action verbs.

Look at the difference.

I did the shopping.

I did not like what he said.

I had breakfast.

I have eaten breakfast.

Can you spot the difference? The second sentences in each section are auxiliary verbs. Did supports the main verb like and have the main verb eaten.

Auxiliary verbs are second to the main verb. Think of them as supporting actors in a film.

What tenses do we use auxiliary verbs in?

We use auxiliary verbs in every tense, but there are four where they are used consistently: have and has with perfect simple tenses, have/has and been with perfect continuous tenses, will with future simple tense and am, is, are, was and were with the past and present continuous tenses.

What are the 23 helping verbs?

Now that you know why we use helping verbs and what tenses we use them in, take a look at the table below to see what the 23 are.

Modal auxiliaries and subject-verb agreement

You may be surprised to see modals in the table. You shouldn’t be, as they are helping verbs too.

Think of helping verbs as having two categories: the main helping verbs ( be, do and have ) and modal auxiliaries (such as may, might, must ).

Modal auxiliaries sound complicated but trust me, they aren’t. Will and would are used for the future, might and may for a possibility, can for an ability, must for an obligation and should for a suggestion. Of course, there are many other ways we use modal verbs, all of which you can read about here .

When we use modal auxiliary verbs, we do not have to change the verbs to fit the subject.

For example, he must leave is correct even if he is a third-person singular pronoun. He musts leave is incorrect.

This formation is different to be, do and have . When we use these helping verbs in speech and writing, we must change the form of the verb.

For example, has, does and is are used with third-person singular pronouns ( he, she and it ) in the present.

She has done her homework.

It does not work.

He is getting here soon.

Helping verbs in subject questions and passives

1) questions.

Usually, when we use helping verbs in sentences, the form is subject + helping verb . In subject questions, it changes to helping verb + question.

For example, You like tennis becomes do you like tennis ?

It is the same for all tenses.

2) Passives

In the passive voice, we use the form object as subject + verb to be + past participle of the main verb.

The flowers were picked by me.

Examples of helping verbs

1) Be (be, am, are, is, was, were, been, being)

Do you want to be liked?

I am working.

You are playing tennis.

He is annoying me.

She was watching TV.

They were going out.

Nathan has been to Canada.

I am being grumpy.

2) Have (have, has, had)

I have published books all day.

He has asked everyone in that room three times.

Alex had banned Stefan from the party as he was trouble.

3) Do (do, does, did)

Do you want to go?

Jeff does love Tanya; he told me himself.

We did not go skiing in the end.

You wouldn’t dare.

They may enter the building.

She should finish on time.

He must pay his fine.

She might talk to you.

The verb do can be an auxiliary verb or a main verb in English.

1. do as a main verb

Verbs are essential to creating complete sentences, as they help us express physical actions ( She jumped in the puddle) , mental actions ( He thought about puppies) , and states of being ( I am hungry) .

There are several types of verbs that can each be written in different tenses, so they can be tricky to work with, especially if English isn’t your first language . We’ve put together a guide to help you use one of the most common verbs, do , in your writing . Read on below to learn more!

Action Verbs

As the name suggests, action verbs are used to express actions completed by the subject of a sentence. The base verb do is conjugated according to the tense:

1. Present Tense

In the present tense, do takes the form do or does, depending on the subject:

Consider the following examples:

We do our homework every night.

   She does her homework every night.

2. Past Tense

In the simple past tense , the base verb do takes the form did with all subjects:

   We did our homework last night.

   She did her homework last night.

Auxiliary Verbs

Auxiliary , or helping verbs, are used with another base verb to create negative sentences, questions, or add emphasis. Here’s how do should be used as an auxiliary verb:

1. Negative Sentences

Following the same subject–verb pairings introduced above, we combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the adverb not to create negative sentences:

   We do not do our homework every night.

   She did not do her homework last night.

Note that we can combine the auxiliary and the adverb to create the contractions don’t , doesn’t , and didn’t . You simply remove the space between the two words and replace the letter o in not with an apostrophe (’).

Contractions are more common in conversations and informal writing and typically shouldn’t be used in formal writing (e.g., academic or business).

2. Questions

To create questions, the auxiliary is combined with the infinitive of another verb in this way: auxiliary verb + subject + infinitive verb .

●  Simple present questions:

Do they sell children’s books?

Does he speak English?

Note that the third person verb speaks isn’t spelled with the s when paired with the auxiliary to form a question.

●  Simple past questions:

Did you buy anything at the bookstore?

Did he learn how to speak English?

Note that did indicates the past tense, so the main verbs don’t also take the past tense (i.e., bought and learned ).

3. Emphasis

In positive sentences, we can also combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the main verb to emphasize that something is true:

   We do sell children’s books.

   He did learn to speak English.

Try saying these sentences aloud and adding emphasis to the auxiliary terms with your tone. It adds a dramatic effect!

I) Main uses:

1) Past actions with results/consequences in the present. Paul has eaten all the cookies. When was the action done? In the past: a few minutes ago/yesterday. Consequence? There is no cookie left. There is nothing left for me.

2) Actions which began in the past and are still in progress. Paul has lived in London for 10 years. When did it start? 10 years ago. Is it finished? No, it isn't. Paul is still in London. He lives in London.

II) HOW TO USE: SYNTAX: HAVE (or HAS with he/she/it) + PAST PARTICIPLE I have done my homework. She has done her homework (verb: do)

NEGATIVE: I have not done my homework. = I have n't done my homework. She has not done her homework. = She has n't done her homework.

QUESTION: Have you done your homework? Yes, I have . / No, I haven't .

She has or She have: Which one is Correct?

“ Have ” is an auxiliary verb in English grammar. And “ has ” is simply the singular form of “ have .” When we say auxiliary verbs, we mean helping verbs that help the main verb in a sentence . So, the question of whether it should be “ she has ” or “ she have ” is a question related to the agreement between a verb and a pronoun .

She has or she have: which one is correct?

Helping verbs like have and has are the type of verbs that are generally used when one wants to express ownership or possession of something. Have and has are both verbs that are used in the present tense .

Now, has is a singular form of a verb with singular pronouns such as she, he, and it. On the other hand, have is a verb form with plural pronouns such as they and we , but the only exceptions are the singular pronouns such as I and you . Therefore, the answer is “ she has .” Using “ she ” and “ have ” together is grammatically incorrect.

For example:

• She has a lot of work to do today. ( correct )
• She have a lot of work to do today. ( wrong )
• She has the pencil you are looking for. ( correct )
• She have the pencil you are looking for. ( wrong )

Exception: Although “ she ” is always used with the helping verb “ has ,” there is one exception. The exception is when the pronoun she is preceded by another verb, “ does .” In this case, we need to pair she and have . For instance: “Does she have a scooter?”

• She has a natural talent for singing.
• She has a green thumb and always has a successful garden.
• She has a degree in computer science.
• She has a passion for cooking and tries out new recipes often.
• She has a lot of energy and is always on the go.

• She has a kind heart and is always willing to help others.
• She has a fear of heights and never goes on roller coasters.
• She has a good sense of humor and can always make people laugh.
• She has a part-time job as a barista at a local coffee shop.
• She has a dog named Max, who is her constant companion.
• She has a close relationship with her family and talks to them often.
• She has a black belt in karate and has been practicing for years.
• She has a knack for fixing things and is always the go-to person for repairs.
• She has a fear of public speaking and gets nervous before presentations.

Final words

The conclusion is that the verb “ has ” is always used with a singular pronoun. Therefore, stick to using “ she has ”.

Had Done vs. Have Done – What’s the Difference? (+Examples)

Have you ever had difficulties making sense of past tenses and how to use them? For example, what’s the difference between “Had Done” and “Have Done”? We want to know when each of the forms should be used and what exactly they mean in a sentence.

Let’s find out.

Had Done vs. Have Done – What’s the Difference?

Both “Had Done” and “Have Done” express actions that happened in the past. “Have Done” is the present perfect tense, and indicates an action was just finished or finished in the recent past. “Had Done” is the past perfect tense, and expresses an action taken before another action.

Believe me when I tell you it’s less complicated than it sounds. Let’s start by looking at some examples:

• I have done the dishes.
• I had just done the dishes when Howard approached me.

The first sentence indicates the dishes are done. In fact, the present perfect form expresses that the dishes were done recently and possibly the action just finished. In this context, the correct form is “Have Done”.

The second sentence indicates that the dishes were done before Howard approached the subject. In other others, a second action (the approach) took place after the first action (doing the dishes) happened.

In that scenario, the correct form to use is the past perfect, and the correct form is “Had Done”.

“Had Done” is the past perfect of the verb “Do”. It should be used to indicate that an action had been fished before a second action took place. The idea, simply put, is to express that action A was finished before action B happened.

To make better sense of how this works, let’s go over some examples of sentences that use the form “Had Done”:

• I had done the cleaning before I went to work.
• He had done the laundry before Anna, so she could take as much time as she needed.
• We had already done the organizing before the boss told us to.
• Liz had done her work and submitted it before it was due.
• Even before you reminded me, I had done the grocery shopping already.

“Had Done” will always make it clear that the action it is describing took place before another action in the past took place. The order in the sentence might be inverted (like in sentence 5) but the timeline is expresses will always remain clear.

If you’re talking about only one action, you should use the form “Have Done”.

“Have Done” is a bit simpler than “Had Done”, because it can express one stand-alone action, without the need to think about what happened before or after. “Have Done” is the present perfect of the verb “Do” and should be used to indicate an action was just recently finished.

Take a look at the sentences in the examples, that use the form “Have Done”:

• I have done all my homework.
• John has done all his work for the week.
• Luana has done the dishes, so I didn’t have to.
• The janitors have done all the cleaning this morning, in case you haven’t noticed.
• I asked Jose about the report, and he told me he has done it already.

Which Is Used the Most?

Which one of those forms is used more often, “Have Done” or “Had Done”? Take a look at the graph from Google Ngram Viewer below.

“Have Done” is used more than “Had Done”, but just by a slim difference. It was actually interesting to see, in the graph, that both expressions follow the exact same trends over the years: when one goes up, the other follows, and vice versa.

As of now, both seem to be used almost at the same frequency. We think this makes sense, because “Have Done” and “Had Done” indicate different past tenses and, consequently, tell different stories.

Final Thoughts

Both “Have Done” and “Had done” are grammatically correct. Use “Have Done”, the present perfect tense, to describe actions that just took place and are recently finished. Use “Had Done” to describe an action finished in the past, that took place before another action that happened afterward.

Why Do Y'all Hate Caitlin Clark So Much?

Is it a race thing? Do people believe she's overrated? Do people think she's too cocky? The Complex Sports team sat down to answer questions on why people hate Caitlin Clark.

We've never seen a generational (yes, generational) talent like Caitlin Clark be this polarizing of a figure in sports early in a career. You may combat that statement by mentioning a guy like LeBron James, who has a significant amount of haters but the majority of those haters have a great deal of respect for him as well. His hate was also built up over time. When it comes to Caitlin Clark, there's been a lot of hate and disrespect off the bat. Fans are going to be fans and say whatever they want whether it's based off facts or opinions but when former and current players are piling on as well, you have to stop and evaluate the situation. 

You don't have to like Caitlin Clark or her play style but you definitely have to recognize and acknowledge what she's done for the game of women's basketball. No other college athlete in the past 25 years has transcended their sport like Clark has. Women's college basketball is at its peak in popularity right now and that's on the back of Clark. As Dawn Staley said after the national championship, Clark is undisputedly one the greatest of all time in the sport but not everyone likes to hear that. 

Let us briefly go down some of the responses from the legends of women's basketball to Caitlin's play on the court. Sheryl Swoopes tried to invalidate her scoring record with incorrect statements, Diana Taurasi sent a warning to Clark about her future in the WNBA, Breanna Stewart said Clark needed a championship to be considered an all-time great, and Lynette Woodard said Clark didn't break her scoring record because Clark didn't play with men's basketball and without a 3-point line. These are four legends in women's basketball refusing to uplift someone who has helped changed the game instead they're nitpicking her legacy. Clark on the other hand is quick to acknowledge the groundwork that was laid before her. 

So why do so many people disrespect Caitlin Clark? Is it a race thing? Do people believe she's overrated? Do people think she's too cocky? The Complex Sports sat down to answer some of these questions.

Is it a Race Thing?

It’s hard to say that it isn’t considering the country we live in. Whether people want to admit it or not, almost everything in this country can be boiled down to race and privileges that white Americans benefit from that African Americans historically don’t benefit from. Add in the extra layer of African American women notoriously being underrepresented and marginalized and the conversation surrounding Caitlin Clark’s greatness can become even more complex. Especially considering the legends that she is being compared to and even placed ahead of are predominantly African American women, as well as the two teams she has faced in the national title in consecutive years were lead by predominantly African American women rosters and faces. 

With all of that being said, I do think that she unfairly became the face of an online race war that she didn’t ask for. She doesn’t speak negatively about anybody, isn’t disrespectful, but somehow she has become the lightning rod of race debates on X (Twitter) by merely being great at basketball. The hate that she has received is misplaced, in my opinion. - Kam  

Let's be honest, we're all on social media. We've all seen the discourse when it's come to Iowa playing against LSU or South Carolina. I'm all for Black people winning and achieving great things ESPECIALLY my favorite coach Dawn Staley but when it comes to evaluating Caitlin Clark, race should not be a factor. We get it, she's a midwest white girl cooking everyone in a sport dominated by Black people. We get it, she plays at a predominantly white school with white teammates but it's weird to make a race thing when she's done nothing but show respect to everyone including Black stars like Angel Reese. When Reese was getting criticized for mocking Clark's hand gesture in front of her during last year's national championship, Clark came out and said she didn't deserve the criticism she was getting. - Zion 

Is It Because Her Name Is in Conversations With All-Time Greats?

Listen, you always have to respect the legends that came before you. Caitlin said that herself. All the greats like Maya Moore, Sheryl Swoopes, Lynette Woodard, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, and many other names have set the foundation but a foundation is created to be built upon. Caitlin is a talent we've never seen before. She's producing numbers that we have never seen before and quite frankly, she's playing with less talent than a lot of these names. Iowa is no mid-major and they still collect top 100 talent in America but compared to the likes of UConn, LSU, and South Carolina, there's a big gap in recruiting. 

Yes, she didn't win a ring but can we add context to that? I'm sure if she went to UConn or SC, she'd have a ring but she's nearly willed her team on her back to a championship in back-to-back years. We can't deny her greatness. She's broken nearly every scoring record in the sport. Let's not penalize her for a team award in college when she's proved her greatness. It's annoying to see greats like Sheryl Swoopes, Lynette Woodard, Diana Taurasi, and Breanna Stewart not embrace Clark for what she's done. - Zion 

Most definitely. When somebody is breaking records and being compared to icons that we grew up watching and generations before us saw build a sport to prominence, there will always be some sort of pushback against new names being thrown in the conversation. It’s no different than LeBron James being added in the GOAT convo as his career progressed and passing the likes of Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird in the eyes of the public and other icons to be placed at the table with Michael Jordan. When somebody comes along that passes the iconic names of the past, it will inevitably lead to some uncomfortable conversations, and possibly even over-the-top hate. - Kam

Do You Think She's Too Cocky?

To be honest, I don’t think she is cocky enough. Angel Reese is cocky, and has earned the right to be with the resume and body of work she has amassed in her four years in college. She is one of the most dominant and decorated players of a generation and delivered a national title to LSU when they had never won one before. And truth be told, I think the game is better when you have a dynamic personality like Angel Reese in it, it’s much more entertaining. If Caitlin Clark were just as cocky as Reese, it would be well deserved and well within her right. The fact that she hardly speaks at all from what we see tells me she isn’t as cocky as she could be. Lord knows if I were as good as any of these women at basketball, I would be unbearable on the court, and even to my detractors on social media. - Kam

NO! We are the same basketball fans that celebrate and laugh at Steph Curry's shimmy & gallop down court after threes. We praise Kobe and Michael Jordan for their killer mentality and always wanting to smack talk. Heck, we compare Anthony Edwards to MJ because of it! We are the same fans that criticize players for being too friendly in basketball culture today. Caitlin Clark's on-court gestures and confidence is what we ask for daily so why would we hold it against her. She's competitive and she has earned the right to talk her talk because at the end day, you can't stop her. - Zion 

Is it Because You Think She's Overrated or Overhyped?

I just don't get how you can call her overrated. She just averaged 32-7-9 with every defense keying in on her. She's a talent we've never seen before in the women's game. She's brought attention to the game like nobody else. Like Dawn Staley said, she's one of the greatest to ever play. All the record-breaking television ratings included games revolving around Caitlin Clark. Sure, she doesn't have a ring but that doesn't away from what she's done for the game and what she's produced on the court. 

I mean, she dropped 18 points in the first quarter of a national championship game against undefeated South Carolina. You'd think the discourse would be about her performance. Nope, most people were complaining that refs were blatantly favoring Iowa. Instead of uplifting a great performance, we are finding ways to belittle it. - Zion

I honestly think she is appropriately rated. Whether you think she is the GOAT is your own prerogative, but she has forced her way into the conversation and is not out of place. The NCAA’s all-time leading scorer for men’s and women’s basketball as well as one of the greatest passers we have seen means she belongs in the conversation. Factor in that she took a program that had one Final Four appearance in their programs history before she arrived to two consecutive national championship games, it’s hard to see how you can slight her. She might not have won the national title, but you can’t say she isn’t a winner. 

She defeated an undefeated South Carolina team in a Final Four, got even with the LSU team that beat her in the national title to advance to the Final Four this year, and then bested the player most directly compared to her in Paige Bueckers to reach the national championship this season. If you are trying to slight her and knock her down, I don’t understand it. If you recognize her greatness while also believing somebody like Breanna Stewart or Maya Moore or Sheryl Swoopes or Candance Parker is better, you’re not wrong at all. - Kam

Woman claiming God told her to go on shooting spree because of solar eclipse shoots drivers on Florida interstate, police say

A woman checked out of a Florida hotel and told staff that she was going on a God-directed shooting spree because of the solar eclipse , then shot two drivers on Interstate 10 before being arrested and charged with attempted murder Monday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Taylon Nichelle Celestine, 22, of Georgia, entered the highway 115 miles from the Alabama border in the Florida Panhandle and headed west. She was driving a purple Dodge Challenger with Georgia plates, officials said.

Within 5 miles, she fired into a passing car several times, spraying auto glass and grazing the driver in the arm, the department said in a statement .

She then fired at a second vehicle, hitting the driver in the neck. The driver was injured and treated at a hospital.

Troopers stopped the woman after she drove for about 16 miles and found her with an AR-15 rifle and 9mm handgun. She was arrested and booked into the Holmes County jail. She was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and improper discharge of a firearm.

The Florida Highway Patrol didn't provide details about bail or Celestine's legal representation.

Florida was not in the  total solar eclipse's  path of totality , but millions watched the eclipse as it worked its way across a swath of the country.

While officials did not warn of any expected spike in crime during the eclipse, experts did caution that the rare event could cause an uptick in fatal car crashes.

The U.S. saw a temporary but substantial increase in deadly car crashes during North America's previous total solar eclipse in 2017, researchers said in a letter published in the journal  JAMA Internal Medicine . It is unclear if there were any fatal crashes related to the eclipse on Monday.

• O.J. Simpson died on April 10, according to a statement from his family.
• He was found not guilty of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, in a highly publicized 1995 trial.
• He had two children with Brown and three with his first wife, Marguerite Whitley.

O.J. Simpson 's family confirmed on Thursday that the former football player had died on April 10 after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 76 years old.

While Simpson never directly confirmed his diagnosis, he did allude to it in February, sharing a video to X where he told his followers: "My health is good, obviously I'm dealing with some issues."

Simpson, who was married twice, fathered five children.

Simpson married Marguerite Whitley in 1967 when they were both teenagers, and they had three children together. In 1977, the football player started dating Nicole Brown , and he divorced Whitley in 1979.

He and Brown got married in 1985, and they were together for seven years. They had two children before she filed for divorce in 1992.

In 1995, Simpson was acquitted of the 1994 murder of Brown and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

Arnelle Simpson

Arnelle Simpson is the ex-football star's first daughter with Marguerite L. Whitley. She was born in December 1968, saying during her father's murder trial that it was "the same day my dad won the Heisman trophy," The Washington Post reported at the time.

Arnelle told the jury during the trial that her father was "very upset, emotional, confused" when she spoke to him after police told him about the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, per the Post. At the time of the June 1994 murders, Arnelle was living in a guest house on Simpson's property.

Arnelle also spoke during her father's parole hearing after he spent nine years in prison in relation to a 2007 robbery. During her statement, she called him her "best friend" and "rock," ABC News reported.

"We just want him to come home," Arnelle said at the time. "This has been really, truly hard… I know that he is remorseful."

Jason Simpson

Jason is Simpson and Whitley's first son. He was 24 at the time of the 1984 killings , born in 1970.

As NBC News reported, Jason tried to speak with his father when Simpson arrived at his Brentwood home after his famous televised 1994 car chase. Police, however, stopped Jason before he could reach Simpson and detained him. Jason did not face any charges.

The Los Angeles Times reported in 2016 that Jason was living a quiet life out of the public eye and working as a chef at an Atlanta restaurant called St. Cecilia. A profile that appears to belong to Jason on the Charleston Wine + Food Festival website indicates that he has more recently worked as the executive chef at Golden Eagle and Muchacho , two sister restaurants in the Atlanta area.

Aaren Simpson

Simpson and his first wife had one more daughter, Aaren, who was born in 1977. However, Aaren died at 23 months old after drowning in a swimming pool.

Sydney Brooke Simpson

Sydney Brooke Simpson was born in 1985 and was 8 years old when her mother was murdered in 1994. After Brown's death and amid her father's trial, she was looked after by her maternal grandparents, Louis Brown and Juditha Brown.

According to The Los Angeles Times , she studied at Boston University where she graduated with a degree in Sociology. She later moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, near her brother Jason.

Simpson seemingly has no presence on social media and appears to keep her life private.

Justin Ryan Simpson

Simpson's youngest child Justin was born in 1988 and was 5 years old at the time of his mother's murder. Along with his sister, Justin was also looked after by his grandparents during his father's trial and kept away from the media growing up.

When "The People v. O.J. Simpson," a TV series that dramatized the case, was airing on FX in 2016 and catapulted the Simpson family back into the spotlight, the Tampa Bay Times spoke to Justin about his life at the time. He told them that he was working in real estate and explained why he lives in Florida.

"It's a great place to live, why not St. Pete? It's great here," he said.

A Zillow profile that appears to belong to Justin reads: "Justin has seen a diverse spectrum of markets from Los Angeles to Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Having spent years in multi-family renovation and income properties, Justin has turned his focus to helping others succeed as he has."

It continued: "Having a family immersed in hospitality, Justin sets himself apart by dominating customer service and his communication/negotiation skills give his clients the competitive edge.''

Growing the game is Caitlin Clark's greatest legacy

Caitlin Clark broke the NCAA Division I scoring record and had unprecedented success at Iowa, but growing the game of basketball might be her greatest legacy. (1:57)

CLEVELAND -- Let's talk about Caitlin Clark .

I mean, everybody is talking about her. Has been for months.

People have been debating whether she's the GOAT. Sports fans have been arguing whether she's the best player of her generation. Analysts, like me, have been pontificating that the Iowa Hawkeyes senior guard is the best offensive player to come around in decades.

But one fact is beyond debate: Caitlin Clark has been a singular force who has grown the women's game in ways no college player ever has before.

We've never seen a player sell tickets like Clark, both at home and on the road. We've never seen a player drive ratings like she has. We've never had a player bring this many eyeballs to women's college basketball.

Caitlin Clark has captivated the broader sports fan. The casual sports fan. Even the non-sports fan.

People simply love watching her play.

She plays the game differently . We've never had a player who consistently takes and makes logos 3s. A player who can space the floor like this and then manipulate defenders and pass with accuracy and velocity. She's one of the best passers the women's game has ever seen.

And yes, she broke dozens of records . She scored 3,951 points in her career, including 30 on Sunday when Iowa lost 87-75 in the national championship game. She averaged 31.6 points per game her senior year, and 28.4 points for her career. She passed scoring legends like Pete Maravich and Lynette Woodard.

Those numbers and records are incredible. They might even be insurmountable. But Clark's legacy stretches far beyond the record books.

She shined a spotlight on women's basketball that was greater than any we've ever seen. A record 9.9 million viewers tuned in to watch LSU's win over Iowa in the 2023 national championship game. And on Monday, Iowa's 94-87 victory over LSU in the Elite Eight of averaged 12.3 million viewers, the most watched women's college basketball game in history and one of the most-viewed games in any sport other than NFL football over the past year.

In the regular season, seven different television networks and streaming platforms recorded their highest-rated women's college games ever when Iowa played on their air.

Iowa sold out all of its home games this year and all but two on the road. Ticket prices for Iowa's regular-season home game against Ohio State were the highest on record for a women's basketball game.

The beauty is, people aren't just watching Iowa. Per the NCAA, 292,456 fans attended women's first- and second-round games of this year's NCAA tournament, an increase of 60,779 fans from 2023. Just five years ago, per NCAA records, 274,873 fans attended the entire 2019 women's NCAA tournament.

Does that happen without the Caitlin Clark effect? Probably not.

Who knows where it goes from here. Is this the beginning of a consistent uptick in women's college basketball popularity? Is it a unique phenomenon that will follow her to the WNBA but won't continue in college after Clark moves on? We don't know.

But this is an undeniable point in the evolution of the popularity of women's basketball.

While the women's game has had great teams and players for several decades, no player before Clark has had the kind of impact on the number of people watching.

If you're a women's basketball fan, you have to recognize and appreciate what she has done to grow the sport.

Clark's college career came to an end Sunday. She didn't win an NCAA championship.

But no player has done more to elevate the popularity of the women's game than Caitlin Clark.

Angel Reese Is Taking Her Talents to the WNBA

“Of course, I like to do everything big,” LSU basketball star Angel Reese tells me. It’s mid-March, a week before the start of the NCAA tournament, and the 21-year-old has just shared her plans to enter the WNBA draft with Vogue. She could have dialed up a sports outlet or simply mentioned her decision in a press conference, but “I didn’t want anything to be basic,” she says, speaking via Zoom from her off-campus apartment in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Reese says she was inspired by Serena Williams to break the news with a fashion shoot. (The tennis legend, of course, announced her retirement in the September issue of Vogue in 2022.) “I’ve done everything I wanted to in college,” Reese says: “I’ve won a national championship, I’ve gotten [Southeastern Conference] Player of the Year, I’ve been an All-American. My ultimate goal is to be a pro—and to be one of the greatest basketball players to play, ever. I feel like I'm ready.”

Reese’s final game with LSU on Monday night, which saw the Tigers fall to Iowa in the Elite Eight round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, capped off an extraordinary college run. To summarize: After two seasons at the University of Maryland—with Reese sidelined for months during the first year with a foot injury—she transferred to LSU to play under legendary coach Kim Mulkey, and a whirlwind junior year ensued. Adoring fans nicknamed Reese the Bayou Barbie—a wink to her signature long lashes, cascading hairstyles, bold manicures, and unapologetic love of fashion. The 6’3” forward quickly became one of the highest-earning student athletes of the NIL era , inking deals with Amazon, Beats by Dre, Goldman Sachs, and more—and her dominance on the court led LSU to the 2023 national championship, where they won the first NCAA basketball title in school history, with Reese named the tournament's most outstanding player. A trash-talking gesture in the championship game, meanwhile—watched by a record-breaking 9.9 million viewers—propelled her to viral fame.

“You don't really realize it in the moment,” Reese says about all the attention on her during the matchup, “but obviously the things you say and do can change everything. I literally woke up the next day and I was a celebrity.” In short order, Reese attended the ESPY Awards, taking home the trophy for breakthrough athlete; she graced the pages of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue; she gifted herself a Benz for her 21st birthday and jetted off to Jamaica for vacation; she made a cameo in Cardi B and Latto’s “Put It on Da Floor Again” video; I profiled her for Teen Vogue .

None of this was enjoyed without criticism. We’re still in the early days of the brave new world in which college athletes can be compensated for the use of their name, image, and likeness, and plenty of talking heads have argued that these NIL deals, along with the commitments and visibility that come with them, are distractions—that student athletes can’t compete to the best of their ability while walking red carpets and creating sponsored social media posts. Some saw LSU’s season-opening loss to Colorado as proof of all of this—but, true to form, Reese was unbothered. “I wrote down: ‘People are going to doubt me thinking I got too Hollywood, I got too big-headed,’” she tells me. “But I said I was going to be SEC Player of the Year, and I was SEC Player of the Year.” Reese ends her college career having set numerous records, including the NCAA single-season record in double-doubles.

“To sum it up, it’s been crazy,” she says of her time at LSU. A self-described “girly girl” who’s also calls herself “a killer on the court,” she relishes the opportunity to be herself. “I didn’t have to be in a box,” she says. A fan of crop tops and mini skirts, Reese’s youthful, splashy outfits are punctuated with designer accessories: Chanel bags , Rick Owens sneakers, Prada beanies, etc. While Mulkey—who herself is known for her high-wattage personal style —encouraged Reese to embrace her individuality, at the same time, Reese says, the coach pushed her. “She gets on me hard, and that’s something I need. We have that kind of relationship where we can bump heads but also be on the same page: We just want to win.”

With another year of college eligibility left, her decision to go pro, Reese says, was not made lightly—especially considering all that she’s leaving behind. She may never experience a fan base like the one she has in Baton Rouge, she tells Vogue; the resources in most WNBA organizations, from the staff down to the locker room facilities, pale in comparison to those at LSU; and flying private, as she has rather frequently over the past few years, will no longer be the norm. Reese, though, is okay with all of that. “I want to start at the bottom again,” she says. “I want to be a rookie again and build myself back up; I want to be knocked down and learn and grow at the next level.”

Reese is also keenly aware of how competitive that next level is. There are just 144 spots across 12 teams in the WNBA, with only 36 new athletes drafted into the league each season. If Reese is among those picks during the draft on April 15, as she’s predicted to be, “I’ll be working with grown women,” she says. “I’ll be working with women that have kids, women that have a family to feed. I’m going to have to work my butt off every single day and grind. And who wouldn’t want that? I don’t want anything in my life to be easy.”
