London Writers Society

About the London Writers Society

Community. information. exposure..

The London Writers Society was founded in 2007 to provide information, community and exposure for new and experienced writers in and around London, Canada.

The society has nearly 100 Full Members, who pay dues of $40 a year to support the society’s activities. Our members range from people who are interested in writing and yet are just edging into the craft to writing educators to widely published authors who have lived by the written word all their lives. You may care to browse the biographies on our LWS AUTHORS page.

Below are answers to some of the most common questions we get asked by current and prospective members. If you have a question that isn’t answered below, please email us at [email protected] .

Unfortunately, we cannot provide free editing services or act as agents or publishers. We are like you–people busy with our own projects.

However, receiving individual help with your work via personal contacts you may make at the London Writers Society is one of the fundamental attractions of our creative community. In particular, our members who join critique groups and participate wholeheartedly find a community happy to give opinions and advice.

We believe  the feeling of mutual encouragement, peer support and pride within the society is too strong for  members to ever want to use another’s work. You’ll find that — as our members work together, help each other, and support each other’s goals of getting published — the bond between us becomes very strong.

Moreover, in this era in which publishing is such a challenge, the danger that someone is going to overhear someone else’s opus and rush off to publish it is not really very high.

The London Writers Society is very inclusive–we welcome everyone interested in writing. The society exists for the benefit of all writers and all people interested in writing, in all genres of writing, at all levels of their development. There are no prerequisites or requirements. Do not feel disqualified from joining because you do not feel you are  a ‘true writer’ or because you are just starting out — while it’s true that many of our members are widely published, many are complete beginners or are people just interested in the writing field. All are welcome!

Membership in the London Writers’ Society is only $25 per year. This supports the society’s activities, which are coordinated by the elected executive committee of member volunteers. There is also an Associate Membership ($10 per year), a scaled-down version of our Full Membership for those who do not want to attend meetings, or unable to attend meetings. See our membership Tab for more details.

Course Level Guide

There’s something for everyone at the Faber Academy, whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned writer or somewhere in between. To help you select the right course for you, this guide breaks down what the different levels mean.

These courses are ideal for those who are curious about writing and have little to no prior experience in the field. There are no pre-requisite for these courses – all we ask is that you come with an open mind and a keenness to learn. That’s not to say they aren’t suitable for someone with more experience, though – if you’re looking to refresh your skills or experiment with a new area of writing, you’re also welcome to enrol.

These courses are ideal for those who have some experience in writing – as a hobby, or perhaps through academic or professional work – and are looking for challenging courses to hone their skills further. These courses are also a good next step if you’ve already taken a beginners’ class but don’t feel ready to commit to an advanced course yet.

These courses are ideal for seasoned writers who are serious about getting published. Entry to most of these courses is on an application basis and writers will usually be asked to submit samples of their work-in-progress or a past project.

Orli is the assistant to Lizzy KremerIn and she is currently building her own list. In non-fiction , she loves (primarily) female-driven works which interrogate and critique aspects of popular culture, feminism, and art in all its forms, or which accessibly explore sex and relationships, health and lifestyle, and self-development in new, risky, and empowering ways.  Favourites of hers include You Could Make This Place Beautiful  by Maggie Smith and  Come As You Are  by Emily Nagoski. She is also an avid reader of serious history, and loves to read works which fuse political and cultural history with memoir, such as East West Street  by Philippe Sands and  We Don’t Know Ourselves  by Fintan O’Toole.

In  fiction, she is drawn to works of literary fiction which have engrossing plots at their centre, and which raise questions about language and identity,  the intersection of the personal and the political, performance and literature, and love. She is particularly drawn to stories set during, or notably in the aftermath of, historical conflicts. Novels she’s loved recently include In Memoriam  by Alice Winn and  Moving Kings  by Joshua Cohen.

CREATIVE WRITING

A student sits on a stool, reading from a book into a microphone

Unlike any other creative writing program in Ontario, it enables students to hone their craft while exploring multiple art and design practices.

Collaborative by nature, our transdisciplinary and transcultural approach enriches imaginations, broadens perspectives and helps to develop each individual writer’s voice.

Our program includes the study of living literary culture and literary art practices and production, and emphasizes the practice, craft and production of spoken, written, visual and verbal texts as well as experimental language forms that exist both inside and outside established genres. We welcome ‘attitude’ translated on the page and off, through performance texts and other media.

This program combines written, performance and visual expression. You’ll participate in:

  • An online and print journal
  • Symposia, workshops
  • Showcasing and public performances
  • A book, zine and publications fair
  • Field trips to local readings, conferences and festivals
  • A digital and analog writing lab and access to sound studio
  • A reading series featuring established, emerging and student writers
  • Mentorships, as both mentees and later as mentors
  • University slam team
  • A nurturing and supportive emerging literary community
  • Mentorship by faculty

This program is for both new and emerging writers. You’ll become part of a nurturing and supportive literary community. By the end of your degree, you’ll complete a body of work aimed at publication or exhibition to launch your career.

What to expect from a career as a professional Writer

Many of us enjoy or have a passion for writing but don’t realize that it’s possible to make a career from our talents. Communication careers are booming and writers are needed for a variety of mediums from the web to advertising to television and more. Writing programs at Ontario colleges can help students polish their writing techniques and learn new forms and methods of writing that can help them in any number of careers in the industry.

If you’ve got a passion for the written word and want to develop your writing skills as part of your career path, here’s what you need to know.

Writing Courses

There are many different writing programs offered by Ontario’s colleges, so course material will vary depending on the program you choose. Examples include:

  • Creative Writing.   Whether you’re an aspiring novelist, poet or essayist, specializing in fiction or non-fiction, creative writing programs are for you. Courses on narrative style and plot and character development can help you find your own voice and style, while courses on freelance writing, editing and the business skills all writers need can help you get your work published.
  • Technical Writing.   Technical writing is very different than creative writing, requiring strong analytic skills and the ability to convey visual and technical information clearly and concisely through the written word. Students will learn to design technical documents and produce online documentation, while also learning fundamental writing and editing techniques.
  • Copywriting.   Copywriting is another form of creative writing, but one that has a direct goal –   advertising   and selling. Copywriters must learn to convey a message with their words that inspires desired behavior. Often, copywriters will work closely with   graphic designers , and therefore must learn layout and basic design skills for their content.
  • Scriptwriting.   Scriptwriting programs will give students the writing skills they need to work in television, theatre, film, new media and a variety of other venues. Students will learn to visualize the end result of their work and will learn the business end of writing, from marketing and promotion to copyright laws and grant application.

General Writing Program Requirements

Ontario college writing programs are often offered as graduate certificate programs, which means completion of a degree or diploma program in a related field is generally required. For diploma programs, an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent is required, which includes a grade 12 English credit.

In both types of programs, a writing sample may also be required.

Writing Jobs and Salaries

Jobs in the writing field can take you nearly anywhere, from marketing departments to   television  and broadcasting studios to manufacturer and corporate headquarters. Many writers also work independently, as freelance writers or in attempts to have themselves published.

Because of the broad range of job opportunities, salaries are difficult to predict. Technical writers, freelance writers and copywriters can expect starting salaries anywhere from $30,000 to $55,000 per year, depending on the position and their level of experience. For novelists, salary can only be dictated by the success of their book sales and their contract with a publisher.
