As Internet use by children and teenagers increases, so do concerns about their online safety. Providing a safe environment requires an in-depth understanding of the types and prevalence of online risks young Internet users face, as well as the potential solutions for mitigating risks.

Despite the significant amount of research on these risks, improving child/youth Internet safety remains a challenge. In part, this is because definitions of terms and categories relevant to online safety (such as “cyberbullying”) often vary, making the comparison of statistics and findings among sources imprecise. In addition, there are complex overlaps among different online safety subtopics.

Overall, these factors can make identifying the specific gaps in existing research and knowledge difficult. If these gaps can be better identified and filled, a data-based understanding of issues facing youth could play a key role in driving policy decisions regarding online safety.

In this paper, Adina Farrukh, Rebecca Sadwick and John Villasenor provide:

  • an overview of existing online safety research across a wide range of categories
  • an analysis of major findings
  • an identification of knowledge gaps, and
  • a set of recommendations for specific areas of research that can further the policy dialog regarding online safety

The rationale of this conference is to socialize the public through teachers, education administrators, other education specialists and the public that education is actually the process of transferring information and experiences in all areas of education through formal and non-formal education flat forms, based on the aims, the targeted learners, the materials to be transferred, the approaches to be selected, the methods & techniques to be applied and the levels of learners. The aims of teaching and learning have been changing very rapidly since the birth of the first industrial developmental phase (education 1.0) to the present industrial 4.0 and in the process of moving into education 4.0. The latest stage of the focus of education is on the 4C; Communication, Collaboration, Critical thinking and problem solving, and Creative and Innovative. The changes of this focus have lead the process of education into developing HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) among our students based on critical thinking that has been shaped from their early childhood education levels. When HOTS and critical skills are combined with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills, as the reality has been proven many countries in the world, will lead to developing our skills into solving problems critically. When critical thinking skills are developed and shaped, our minds are opened to more than one ways of solving problems. Once the minds of our students are broadening and their our views of the world are opening into different considerations, they will be led into shaping their characters that are acceptable by the society where they are living in and based on universal views good characters culturally, religiously and socially, and finally form their characters’ identity to be practiced within their own family, society and nationality. The 2013 Indonesian curricula provides teachers to select appropriate learning methods. One of them is the STEM aproach that shape and build characters of the learners from their early stages of their lives. Building characters from this life stage will enable the learners to internally acquire the characters that are acceptable religiously and culturally.

Abstract This study aims to determine the impact of using gadgets on psychosocial, socio-emotional development, selfreliance, responsibility, and student learning outcomes. The focus of this study is elementary school students in urban areas with samples taken from six schools, three each in East Jakarta and South Jakarta in the Indonesian capital city, DKI Jakarta. The results showed that the use of gadgets had a significant influence on psychosocial, socio-emotional, self-reliance, responsibility development, then this variable became mediation which had a significant influence on student learning outcomes. Although it can have a positive or negative impact, it is difficult to limit the use of this gadget to students. For this reason, it is recommended that teachers be able to develop and utilize the use of gadgets in teaching and learning activities to students, encourage creativity, critical thinking, collaborative learning, and encourage problem solving learning. Every element in the school (headmaster, class teacher, guidance and counseling teacher, and others) must intensively explain to students about the impact of using positive or negative gadgets. Schools also need to work with parents to pay more attention to and control the use of gadgets by their children at home. Abstract The rise of violence against children in family cases show that the house which is considered the safest place turns out to be the most terrible for the family especially children. Beside physical, economic, and psychological violence, the terrible violence for children is sexual violence. In this case, children as pedophile victims have the right to accept treatment, care, and protection from positive law. Through some dialogues and discussions with several parties conducted by the companion team while mentoring in Institution for Children Protection, the author depicts that the existence of social problems is one of the factors that cause the increasingly widespread cases of sexual violence against children (pedophilia). Therefore, we have to concern about it in order to minimize the pedophilia crime. Keywords: socialization, pedophilia and child protection

Aside from the role of family and peer groups, social media is also one of the major agents of sexual socialization in adolescents. Since it is relatively easy to connect to the internet these days, these people now have a wider access to pornographic content that could trigger them to engage in risky sexual behaviors. This review aimed to provide an analysis of the influence of social media exposure on adolescent's sexual attitudes and behavior as well as describe limitations of the studies being reviewed. This study was based on several electronic databases namely Google Scholar, Science Direct, Proquest Health and Medical Complete, Proquest Science and Pscycholgy Journals, and PubMed, from 2011 to 2018, which revealed a total of 1351 research articles, with only 21 articles meeting the inclusion criteria and reviews. Digital Device Access and Usage

The vast majority of adolescents (age 13-17) have access to smartphones (95%, 2023 data), desktop or laptop computers (90%), gaming consoles (83%), and tablet computers (65%) [ 1 ]. There are disparities in device access by household income level: 72% of adolescents in lower-income households have access to a computer compared to 87% of middle-income households and 94% of higher-income households. Access to smartphones among adolescents is more evenly distributed across household levels. Access to gaming consoles differs by gender, with 91% of adolescent boys having access to a gaming console compared to 75% of adolescent girls [ 1 ]. Younger children's access to technology is rising, with 31% of eight-year-olds having phones in 2021 (up from 11% in 2015) [ 2 ].

Almost all teenagers (96%) report using the internet daily, with 46% reporting being on the internet almost constantly (up from 24% in 2015). The amount of time spent on the internet varies by age and race/ethnicity. Older teens ages 15 to 17 are more likely to report using the internet almost constantly compared to younger teens (50% vs. 40%). Additionally, White teens are the least likely to report being on the internet almost constantly (38%) compared to 54% of Black teens and 55% of Latinx teens [ 1 ].

A majority of adolescents (61%) report sometimes or often neglecting their daily obligations because they are using technology, and 67% report sometimes or often losing sleep because of late-night internet usage [ 3 ].

For much more information on access to digital devices and how much time young people spend on their devices, view The Common Sense Census: Media Use by Tweens and Teens, 2021 and Teens, Social Media and Technology 2023 .

Smartphones

Smartphones are becoming a core component of young people's daily lives. According to Common Sense Media, half of adolescents (age 11-17) use their smartphones for over 4.5 hours a day. The median number of times that adolescents pick up their smartphones is 51 times per day, with 44% of older adolescents (age 16-17) picking up their smartphones more than 100 times per day. Throughout the day, more than half of adolescents receive over 200 notifications from their smartphones, with 23% of notifications arriving during school hours and 5% during school night hours. The majority of daily smartphone usage comes from social media apps (42%), YouTube (19%), and mobile games (11%) [ 3 ]. For more information on adolescent smartphone usage, view Constant Companion: A Week in the Life of a Young Person's Smartphone Use .

Social Interaction and Development

High school students text frequently, especially with friends, peers, and romantic partners but also, to a lesser extent, with parents [ 4 ].

Social Media Platforms

In 2023, the top social media platforms among teenagers were YouTube (93% of teens had ever used the platform), TikTok (63%), Snapchat (60%), Instagram (59%), Facebook (33%), and Discord (28%). On a daily basis, a majority of teens visit YouTube (71%), TikTok (58%), and Snapchat (51%), with Instagram at 47% [ 5 ]. However, usage of these social media platforms differs by teen's gender, race and ethnicity, age, and household income. More information on young people's use of these platforms can be found in the Pew Research Center's Teens and Social Media Fact Sheet .

Digital Media and Youth Development

While there has been quite a bit of research on negative aspects of the internet and social media, online environments and digital tools also offer young people positive ways to learn, grow, and connect with each other. Learn more about The Pros and Cons of Social Media for Youth on the Evidence-Based Living blog, and find resources on Youth, Media, and Technology from ACT for Youth. Visit Common Sense Media to learn about How Girls Really Feel About Social Media .

Digital Media and Bullying

Some teens use digital media (texting, gaming, social networking, etc.) to repeatedly harass, threaten, or embarrass a peer. In 2023, the Cyberbullying Research Center surveyed a nationally representative sample of U.S. youth age 13-17. They found that almost one in four (23%) teens had been bullied online in the last month, up from 16% in 2016 [ 6 ]. The Center's 2021 study found that teens who identify as transgender are more likely to be bullied online (35% compared to 24% girls and 22% boys). Similarly, youth who identify as LGBTQ (32%) are more likely to be bullied online than non-LGBTQ youth (22%). LGBTQ youth (7%) are also more likely to report that they have bullied others than are heterosexual youth (4%) [ 7 ]. For more information, visit Cyberbullying Statistics 2021: Age, Gender, Sexual Orientation, and Race .

High school students who are bullied online are frequently bullied in school as well, and many feel unsafe, get into fights, and carry weapons for protection [ 8 ].

Romantic Relationships and Flirting

A non-representative survey of high school students done by Montana State University on the impact of technology on romantic relationships found that almost all (95%) of high school students report that technology and social media have influenced adolescent dating relationships [ 9 ]. Many high school students also report that social media shapes expectations for romantic relationships in often unrealistic and gender-stereotyped ways. Additionally, 84% of high school students indicate that technology has become an integral part of romantic relationships. High school students report that technology helps them bridge physical communication barriers more easily, but many also note the increased risk of misunderstanding and conflict from communication that is not face-to-face.

Outside of romantic relationships, 34% of youth (age 13-24) also report using social media as a tool for flirting. Unfortunately, not all of this flirting is wanted. Adolescent girls take the brunt of unwanted online flirting. While 16% of boys age 13-17 have blocked or "unfriended" a person who was making unwanted advances, 35% of girls have done so [ 10 ]. Cell phones and social media can enable controlling behavior during and after a relationship. Among teens age 13-17 who have dated, 13% have had a partner demand that passwords be shared, 11% have been threatened with harm online or by phone, and 8% have had online posts used against them [ 10 ].

"Sexting" — sending sexually explicit messages or images electronically — is increasing among youth, and also increases through the teen years [ 11 ]. Sexting is often used as a form of flirting and is usually consensual [ 12 ]. Among youth under age 18, the prevalence of sending an explicit image or message is nearly 15% and the prevalence of receiving one is 27% [ 11 ]. Though it occurs less often than consensual sexting, non-consensual sexting is all too common: about one in eight youth forward explicit images or messages without the permission of the original sender, and nearly one in 12 youth have a sext forwarded without their consent [ 12 ].

Sexting may also be used to pressure someone into having sex or to actually extort money or sex from a victim ("sextortion") [ 12 ]. In 2019, a report found that at least 5% of teens had been the target of sextortion, with non-heterosexual teens having twice as much risk [ 13 ]. Boys are more likely than girls to be the victims of sextortion, and they are also much less likely to report their experiences to authorities because of feelings of shame and embarrassment. In most cases, victims of sextortion are targeted by current or former romantic partners or someone else they know [ 13 ]. Distributing sexually explicit images of a minor is illegal, and teens have been prosecuted in some cases [ 12 ]. Sexting laws vary greatly among U.S. states [ 12 ].

Partner Seeking

Dating apps have become increasingly popular with young people. In 2017, YTH found that 34% of youth (age 13-24) have used an online dating site [ 15 ]. Youth report using these sites for a variety of reasons, including to make friends, find romantic relationships, go on dates, flirt online, and "hook-up" with someone [ 15 ].

One non-representative, national study of young (age 14-17), sexually experienced men who have sex with men (MSM) found that just over half use MSM-specific apps to find partners for sex while 30% use general dating apps. Most of the participants (83%) who use the apps or websites reported that they do so because of a lack of access to male partners. Some (31%) do so to avoid being outed. Most of the adolescent males in this study reported that they use MSM-specific apps to meet partners for sex (69%), but they also use them to chat with friends (66%), meet new friends (61%), or find a romantic partner (50%) [ 17 ]. Some studies have linked the use of dating apps to risky sexual behavior, such as condomless anal or vaginal sex [ 17 , 18 ].

Entertainment

Video watching.

Common Sense Media reports that watching videos online is an extremely popular activity, with 77% of teens saying they watch daily [ 2 ]. Piper Sandler's Spring 2024 report identified Netflix as the most popular video platform among teens, closely followed by YouTube [ 19 ].

Gaming is also very popular, particularly among boys. The Common Sense survey found that 60% of boys and 24% of girls age 8-18 said they like playing video games "a lot." On average, teen boys spend almost 2.5 hours per day playing video games compared to 1 hour per day for teen girls [ 2 ].

Pornography

Most adolescents (73%) report having seen pornography by age 17, and 54% report having seen pornography by age 13. However, only 44% of adolescents report having viewed pornography intentionally. Rates of intentional pornography consumption are higher among cisgender boys (52%) and transgender and nonbinary youth (66%) than among cisgender girls (36%) [ 20 ].

Just under half of youth who have seen pornography (45%) report that pornography provides helpful information about sex while only 27% report that it accurately shows sex. A slight majority of teen viewers of pornography (52%) say they have been exposed to pornography depicting violence, aggression, or a lack of consent. Many youth of color report having been exposed to pornography depicting people of their own race or ethnicity in a stereotypical way [ 20 ].

Health Information

Hopelab conducted a survey of teens' (age 14-17) and young adults' (age 18-22) use of digital media to access health information and resources. In 2018, they found [ 21 ]:

  • The vast majority (87%) of teens and young adults go online for health information, particularly about fitness, nutrition, stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Nearly half of teens (49%) and most young adults (76%) have used mobile health apps.
  • 90% of respondents with symptoms of depression go online for information about mental health.

For more of the study's findings, visit Digital Health Practices, Social Media Use, and Mental Well-Being Among Teens and Young Adults in the U.S.

A 2017 qualitative study by YTH described Google as a popular but not entirely trusted way to get sexual health information [ 15 ]. According to the study, young people regard health professionals as the best resource for answering their sexual health questions, but Google was often the first stop, sometimes replacing a health care visit. The privacy and speed offered by the internet make it especially appealing to young people. Young people who are afraid to turn to parents or other adults with their questions are especially likely to use the internet to find sexual health information. The study is reported at TECHsex: Youth Sexuality and Health Online .

100 Words Essay on Impact of Social Media on Teenager

Introduction.

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, especially for teenagers. It provides a platform to connect, share, and learn.

Positive Impact

Social media can be beneficial. It helps teenagers to express themselves and connect with friends. It’s also a source of information.

Negative Impact

In conclusion, while social media has its advantages, it’s essential for teenagers to use it responsibly.

250 Words Essay on Impact of Social Media on Teenager

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, particularly for teenagers. It’s a platform that offers a myriad of opportunities for communication, entertainment, and learning. However, it also presents challenges and potential harms.

Firstly, social media offers a platform for self-expression and identity formation, critical aspects of adolescent development. Teenagers can explore various facets of their personalities, interests, and values. Moreover, it provides an avenue for social interaction and friendship formation, connecting teenagers globally.

On the flip side, the pervasive nature of social media can lead to addictive behaviors, impacting teenagers’ mental health. The constant need for validation through likes and comments can lead to anxiety and low self-esteem. Furthermore, cyberbullying is a significant concern, with its effects often devastating, leading to depression or even suicidal thoughts.

Role of Digital Literacy

To mitigate the negative impacts, it’s crucial to foster digital literacy among teenagers. They need to be educated about responsible social media use, privacy settings, and how to handle cyberbullying.

In conclusion, while social media offers significant benefits to teenagers, it also poses considerable risks. It’s a double-edged sword that can either enhance or hinder adolescent development. Therefore, it’s crucial to provide teenagers with the necessary tools and education to navigate this digital landscape safely and responsibly.

500 Words Essay on Impact of Social Media on Teenager

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, shaping our interactions, relationships, and the way we perceive the world. However, its impact on teenagers, who are at a critical stage of their development, is a topic of intense debate and concern.

The Positive Impact

Moreover, social media helps teenagers build connections and socialize, especially those who may be introverted or socially anxious. It offers a space where they can engage in discussions, participate in online communities, and build friendships beyond geographical boundaries.

The Negative Impact

Conversely, the pervasive use of social media also has potential downsides. Cyberbullying is a significant issue, with teenagers being particularly vulnerable to online harassment and abuse. This can lead to serious emotional and psychological consequences, including depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.

Furthermore, excessive use of social media can negatively affect teenagers’ physical health. It can lead to sedentary behaviors, sleep disturbances, and even addictive tendencies, disrupting their overall wellbeing and development.

Given these impacts, it is crucial to promote digital literacy among teenagers. They need to be educated about the potential risks and benefits of social media, and how to use it responsibly. This includes understanding privacy settings, recognizing and reporting inappropriate content or behavior, and being mindful of the amount of time spent online.

In conclusion, while social media can be a beneficial tool for teenagers, it also presents significant challenges. It is imperative that parents, educators, and policymakers work together to ensure a safe and positive online environment for teenagers, fostering their growth and development in the digital age. The key lies in balance and mindful usage, allowing teenagers to harness the potential of social media while mitigating its risks.

Besides rallying people around social causes and political campaigns, social media in the Arab region has also been used to enhance citizen journalism and civic participation (Turkle, 2011).

This paper looks at the role of social media in the UAE, and its impact on the youth. In order to achieve this, this paper looks at various social media that are used by the youth in the UAE, what he youth see as the main benefits of social media, level of trust in social media, and the limitations that they face with regard to social media.

Social networking has become the easiest way for individuals to communicate, whether they live in the same country, or across the world from each other.

Social networking refers to the “network of social interactions and personal relationships” that consists of devoted websites or applications, which permit users to communicate with each other through posting messages, pictures, and sharing comments, among others (Oxford Dictionaries, 2010).

The drastic impact that various social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace have on people’s lives, and the way they communicate with one another, has made this topic relatively crucial.

People who are often addicted to such networks get fairly attached to it, causing them to communicate less with their families and replace the need for face-to-face interaction with their friends. This paper examines the effect of social media on the youth of the United Arab Emirates.

Studies show that the media is used for three primary reasons. First, it is used to bring meaning of the social world. Second, it informs people on how to act within a society. And third, it promotes pleasure and entertainment (Lenhardt & Madden, 2011). Based on these three elements that motivate media, it is apparent that various individuals are impacted in different ways by the media.

The audience has varied degree of reliance on the media based on their relationship with both the society, and the media. Studies show that the reliance of an audience on particular media gives that media a certain degree of authority over that audience. This theory is useful in the explanation of the impact of media during crisis, and will also be useful in the analysis of the impact of social media on the youth of the UAE (Boyd, 2007).

According to Al-Jenaibi (2011), social media has also been useful in developing forums for debate and interaction between governments and the communities, as well as, to enhance innovation and collaboration within the government. Social media has been used for various purposes including relaying information and cultural production, as well as, entertainment.

The rapid increase in the number of youth accessing various social media in the last decade has been driven by accessibility of the internet, especially through the mobile phones (Al-Jenaibi, 2011).

According to Al-Jenaibi (2011), the recent trrnsformations in both political and societal matters have been effected by the rapid adoption of social media as a driver for regional change, especially among the Arab youthm “netizens” and women. There has been increased involvement of both youth and women in political and civic actions owing to increased access to the internet.

At the same time, regional and international level policy makers have taken an active role in the regulation of access to the internet and the use of social media for political and societal activism.

The use of the Internet has grown rapidly in the Arab world due to the diversification of its uses from social neworking and entertainment, to more professional engagements between businesses, as well as, in enhancing the transparency and participatory objectives of governance models (Hinduja & Patchin, 2007).

Although some may believe that social networking has helped our youth in many ways, social networking also possesses several negative features that are not widely recognized. Since social networking involves the Internet, it is prone to several dangers that people can easily come across.

Online predators can easily gather certain information; therefore, people are more likely to get security attacks and are prone to hackers due to the personal information they reveal on these social networking communities (ProCon.org, 2012).

A popular example of this involves people who provide detailed information about themselves on MySpace, without having the option of limiting this information to only people they know/accept. In addition, cyber bullying is very common on such websites and can lead to decreased self-esteem and declining of grades (Hinduja & Patchin, 2007).

The various social media investigated in the study include blogs, micro blogs, social network service, video-sharing service, social bookmarking, and image sharing websites (Ito & Baumer, 2010). The quantitative study involved 30 surveys that were randomly distributed in a population of youth aged between 15 and 30 years from different parts in the seven regions of the United Arab Emirates.

The mean age of the sample used was 21 years, with most of the respondents pursuing tertiary education. However, all of the respondents selected had graduated from high school. Reliability of the survey questions was enhanced by rewording the questions in various ways in order to identify the stability of the responses provided.

No inconsistencies were noted in the retests; hence, all 30 surveys were used in analysis of the research question. The survey was administered online, and comprised questions that sought to measure the emotional and social well-being of the youth.

Some of the questions inquired about their state of happiness or sadness compared to other people who did not have access to social networking, whether they had many friends or were lonely at times, and more questions along those lines.

Face to face communication

Favorite way to communicate with friends

The study revealed that despite the prevalence of the use of technology among the youth, most of them still preferred to communicate face to face. Text messaging came in second and the use of social network s third.

Social and digital communication

Use of Social and Digital Communications

The sample was also surveyed for their use of social and digital communications. Texting was observed as a common trend among 87% of the sample, followed by social networking and emailing. These three activities were also the most prevalent on a daily basis, in the same order.

Social networking

Main social networking sites

This analysis of the use of social networking sites showed that it forms a crucial part of the youth’s lives, since more than half of the sample stated that they visit a social site on a daily basis. About 75% of the youth indicated that they were familiar with the privacy policies on social networking sites.

Social networking and social-emotional well-being

Perceived Effect of Social Networking on Social and Emotional Well-Being

Most of the study group indicated that the use of social networking did not influence their social or emotional well being. Some indicated that social networking had a positive effect on them, like for those who were less shy due to social networking, or more outgoing, and more confident.

Social media and relationships

Impact of Social Networking on Relationships

Many youth feel that social media has been useful in enhancing their relationships with both related and non-related people. Conversely, the sample stated that social networking impacted on the time that they spent with their friends or other people in person.

Hate Speech Online

Hate Speech in Social Media

One of the impacts of social media that has not been explored is the use of social media to spread hate speech. The study noted that about half of the sample had encountered various forms of discriminatory content in the various social media indicated earlier. About 25% of the sample also indicated that they encountered hateful content on various social networks on a regular basis.

Cell Phone and Social Networking “Addiction”

Table 15: Frustration with Gadgets and the Desire to Unplug.

Strongly or somewhat agree that they:

  • Get frustrated with friends for texting or social networking when hanging out together 45%.
  • Wish they could unplug for a while sometimes 43%.
  • Sometimes wish they could go back to a time when there was no Facebook 36%.
  • Wish their parents spent less time with cell phones and other devices 21%.

The study revealed that a considerable proportion of the youth could not operate without a cell phone. A considerable number stated that they occasionally felt the need to do away with social networking. This was especially evident in the frustration that most youth expressed due to the distraction that is caused when they were hanging out with their friends.

During the study, it was identified that the most common types of social media were social networks like Facebook, video-sharing websites like YouTube, and micro-blogging sites like Twitter, among others. The respondents in the study showed high familiarity with a variety of social media, including the privacy policies, and the potential ethical and practical shortcomings.

Social networking was identified to have a positive impact on the youth in terms of boosting their confidence and level of interaction. Social media also served as a reliable means of conveying social issues in the UAE. Further research on the topic can be narrowed down to the impact of social media on women in the UAE.

In addition, more research can be conducted to draw a complete picture of the merits, demerits, and possibilities of social media that have made the UAE one of the regions in the world with the highest internet migration rates.

Does internet use improve well-being? Study suggests it does for everyone except young women

A large study with data from over two million people looked for links between online activity and variables such as personal satisfaction, social relationships and daily motivation. some experts remain skeptical about the findings.

Un gran estudio revela que es beneficioso salvo para chicas jóvenes

Daily use of the internet generates the same feeling of well-being as taking a walk in the park. So say Andrew Przybylski, a professor at the University of Oxford, and Matti Vuorre, from the University of Tilburg, after discovering that people with internet access were 8% more satisfied with their lives than those who did not have access to the internet. “The differences in happiness between people who go for a walk and those who don’t are of a magnitude similar to what we see at this very high level between people who go online and people who don’t,” says Vuorre. However, women between 15 and 24 years old who used the internet were less happy, according to a recent macro study published in the journal Nature.

It is the first sample to address internet access and well-being on a large scale: it analyzed internet access data for 2,414,294 people from 168 countries. “There are studies on that, but most have been small-scale in developed Western countries, usually English-speaking. This is a fairly new look,” says Matti Vuorre. Researchers took data from the Gallup GWP World Poll carried out by the analysis company Gallup, between 2006 and 2021. Respondents were asked if they had internet access at home, if they had internet access on their mobile phone and if they had used the internet in the last seven days, from a mobile phone, computer or other device.

For the study, the authors took into account eight indicators to assess “ well-being ”: life satisfaction, the degree of negative and positive experiences, social relationships, physical well-being, comfort in the place of residence and employee motivation. “We first queried the extent to which well-being varied as a function of internet connectivity. Then, we examined these associations’ robustness in a multiverse of 33,792 analysis specifications,” wrote the authors. “Of these, 84.9% resulted in positive and statistically significant associations between internet connectivity and well-being. These results indicate that internet access and use predict well-being positively and independently from a set of plausible alternatives.” The “multiverse” system repeatedly fitted a similar model to potentially different subgroups of the data using potentially different predictors, outcomes, and covariates in order to rule out that the associations between internet use and well-being were being caused by something else.

Cyberbullying and social media

The authors note that even though 84.9% of the associations were significantly positive, and only 0.4% were negative, “we did, however, observe a notable group of negative associations between internet use and community well-being. These negative associations were specific to young (15–24-year-old) women’s reports of community well-being.”

“Although not an identified causal relation, this finding is concordant with previous reports of increased cyberbullying and more negative associations between social media use and depressive symptoms,” adds the study, which calls for further analysis. For Andrea Vizcaíno Cuenca, a psychologist and CEO of the Spanish medical center Policlínica Maio who was not involved in the study, the problem lies in social media : “They encourage social comparison, especially among young women. Viewing carefully selected and edited images of others can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Constant exposure to unrealistic beauty standards for women contributes to lower emotional well-being and a negative perception of the environment.”

To measure community well-being, respondents were asked if the city in which they lived was a perfect place or if in the last 12 months they had done something to improve the area in which they lived. Girls who used the internet confessed to being less happy with the place where they lived, according to the study. Przybylski says it could be because people who don’t feel welcome in their community spend more time online.

Cyberbullying is a serious problem that “disproportionately” affects young women, says Vizcaíno: in Spain, 3% of 15-year-old girls claim to have suffered bullying at school at least two or three times a month, according to a report from the World Health Organization (WHO). Its effects can be “devastating” for mental health, such as increased levels of anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. “They can directly contribute to a negative perception of community well-being, as experiences of bullying can cause victims to feel isolated and disconnected from their community,” adds Vizcaíno. One in six adolescents suffers from cyberbullying, representing an increase from 13% to 16% among girls and 12% to 15% among boys since 2023, according to the WHO. The study calls for future research to look at whether low community well-being drives engagement with the internet or vice versa.

From internet to cinema

Although the debate between technology and well-being continues, it now seems unthinkable to live without the internet . Not everything is harmful in cyberspace and that is what the study tries to explain. Rebeca Cordero, a professor of applied sociology at the European University of Madrid, reflects on this: “We have to escape from that negative vision that the internet is something bad or harmful . A well-used tool can generate well-being.” Digital disconnection can even decrease life satisfaction, as explained in another study in November of last year. Social media offers powerful social rewards, and restricting it can reduce positive emotions.

Despite this, experts such as the health psychologist José Antonio Tamayo do not agree with the findings of the study. Tamayo underscores that the GWP Global Survey is not a psychometrically validated instrument, and that the questions are based on a definition of “well-being” unique to GWP. Additionally, respondents’ responses present risks of recall bias, social desirability or conformity, he explains. “When we talk about well-being it is a personal perception, what we do is study perceptions. I may have the feeling that what I am exposed to generates my well-being, but in reality it does not.” Tamayo also does not rule out that other factors intervene between internet use and well-being, such as income level. The study does take economic differences into account, even though “data and model selection were limited.”
