Essay on Chandrayaan 2 in English

Chandrayaan-2 or Second Chandrayaan is India’s second lunar exploration mission after Chandrayaan-1, developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The expedition includes a lunar orbiter, a rover and a lander built in India. 

All these have been developed by ISRO. Chandrayaan 2 was launched on July 22 from the same launch pad from where Chandrayaan 1 took off. Instead of using the previously used older PSLV rocket , the spacecraft used the Advanced Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III). 

Unlike last time, ISRO refused to carry any foreign payload due to weight restrictions. But in June 2019 , it agreed to carry a small laser retroflector from NASA .

However, the orbiter will hover over the moon at a distance of 100 km and perform passive experiments as it did on Chandrayaan 1. The entire Chandrayaan 2 mission costs approximately $ 141 million . 

Unlike Chandrayaan 1, this time the hopes were quite high as the spacecraft is also carried a lunar rover , orbiter, and lander . In addition, Chandrayaan 2 is the country’s first opportunity to use self-built components and design vehicles. 

However, at about 1:52 am IST, the lander deviated from its intended path about 2.1 km from the landing and ground control with the spacecraft lost communication. On 8 September 2019, it was reported by ISRO that Vikram Lander has been detected from the heat painting taken by the orbiter. But Vikram Lander has not been contacted yet.

Main information of orbiter, lander, and rover

Chandrayaan 2 orbiter

The orbiter will orbit the moon at an altitude of 100 km. In this campaign, it has been decided to send the orbiter with five payloads. Three payloads are new, while two others are improved versions of payloads which were sent on the Chandrayaan-1 orbiter. 

Its weight at the time of flight was about 1400 kg.  The Orbiter High Resolution Camera will give high-resolution pictures of the landing site before the lander separates from the orbiter. The mission life of the orbiter is one year and is placed in a 100 X 100 km long lunar polar orbit.

Chandrayaan 2 Vikram lander

Chandrayaan 2’s lander is named after Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai , the father of the Indian space program. It is designed to function for one lunar day, which is equivalent to about 14 Earth days.  Vikram lander has the ability to communicate with IDSN as well as orbiter and rover at Bayalu near Bangalore. 

But due to loss of contact with the lander, the task of the lander (Vikram) and rover (Pragyan) seems impossible.

Chandrayaan 2  rover

The rover weighs 27 kg and will be powered by solar power Electric power generation capacity – 50 W. Chandrayaan 2’s rover is a 6-wheeled robotic vehicle named Pragyan, which translates to ‘knowledge’ in Sanskrit. It can travel up to 500 meters (½km) and make use of solar power for its functioning. 

It can only communicate with the lander. The rover will move on the surface of the moon with wheels, collect samples of soil and rocks, chemically analyze them and send the data up to the orbiter from where it will be sent to the earth station.

However, the rover has not come out of the lander due to lack of contact with the lander and if the lander is not in contact, then the rover will not be able to do its job and the information related to the moon will not reach us.

Current status of Chandrayaan 2

ISRO had planned to launch Chandrayaan-2 at 2:51 AM in the early hours of 15 July 2019 in Indian time, which was canceled due to some technical glitch, so its time was changed to 22 July 02:43 PM Due to this, this vehicle was successfully launched at the scheduled time. 

Vikram Lander has currently lost contact with ISRO at 02:00 pm on 07 September 2019 at 2.1 km above the lunar plane. Lander is being contacted again. President of the Indian Space Research Center (ISRO), K Sivan said, “The Vikram lander landed in a normal way to an altitude of 2.1 km above the lunar surface. After this, the lander lost contact with the earth. The data is being analyzed. In September, ISRO Chairperson, Dr. K. Sivan announced that the lander was viewed with the help of a thermal image of the orbiter on the lunar surface,

Chandrayaan 1 was India’s first spacecraft to travel to the moon under the lunar exploration program of the Indian Space Research Organization. Although the name of this vehicle was only Chandrayaan, the name of the next vehicle in this series was Chandrayaan-2, this campaign started to be called Chandrayaan-1. 

Chandrayaan 1 was launched on 22 October 2008 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, Sriharikota and remained active till 30 October 2009 . It used an indigenously developed Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-XL) rocket . 

Chandrayaan 1 was based on an Indian meteorological satellite called Kalpasat . It took 5 days to reach the moon but it took 15 days to set up in the moon’s orbit.

The spacecraft successfully entered lunar orbit on 8 November 2008 and released its lunar impact test just six days after that. The purpose of the Chandrayaan was to find detailed maps of the lunar surface and traces of water and helium. 

Its tenure was to be around 2 years , but it was closed earlier due to loss of contact with the control room. With Chandrayaan, India became the sixth country to send satellite on the moon. 

This venture opened the way for sending manned aircraft to the moon and Mars.  Cruising just 100 kilometers above the lunar surface, Chandrayaan 1 took several high-resolution images of the moon’s topography. It also performed mineralogical mapping and scoured the surface for any radioactive elements.

One of the major achievements of the mission was the discovery of a large number of water molecules present in the soil of the moon. This mission cost only $ 56 million and gave us important information about the lunar surface.

  • Mineral and chemical imaging of the north-polar and south-polar regions permanently under the shadow. 
  • Look for surface or subsurface lunar water-ice, especially at lunar poles.  Identification of chemicals in rocks. 
  • Chemical taxonomy of the layer, imaging of internal material from the telepathy and by the South Pole Aitken Region (SPAR). 
  • Mapping the variation of elevation of the lunar surface. 
  • Observation of most stereographic coverage of the lunar surface with an X-ray spectrum greater than 10 kV and 5 m (16 ft) resolution. 
  • To provide new insights into understanding the origin and evolution of the Moon.

Achievement of the Century by Chandrayaan 1

The Indian Space Research Organization [ISRO] claimed that water on the moon is an exploration of India. The presence of water on the moon was detected by India’s own Moon Impact Probe [MIP] on Chandrayaan-1. 

US Space Agency NASA equipment has also confirmed water on the moon. Chandrayaan-1 has made an important discovery of this century by finding the presence of water on the moon. According to ISRO, water on the moon is not present in the form of seas, waterfalls, ponds or drops, but on the surface of minerals and rocks. The presence of water on the Moon is much higher than earlier estimates.

Chandrayaan 2 Mission Essay [UPSC Notes GS III]

Chandrayaan Mission was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was India’s first mission to the moon. The spacecraft was launched on 22nd October 2008 by a modified version of the PSLV C-11 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The vehicle was successfully inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008.

ISRO is planning mission Chandrayaan-3 in late 2021 or early 2022. India launched Chandrayaan-2, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota on 22nd July 2019.

What is Chandrayaan 1?

In 1999, the Indian Academy of Sciences initiated an idea of undertaking an Indian scientific mission to Moon. This initiative was followed by a discussion with the Astronautical Society of India in 2000. Based on the recommendations, a National Lunar Mission Task Force was constituted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) . Thereafter, India’s first lunar mission Chandrayaan – 1 was launched on 22nd October 2008 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

Objectives of Chandrayaan 1:

  • To perform high-resolution remote sensing of the moon’s surface.
  • To provide a three-dimensional atlas of the Moon (near and far side).
  • To conduct chemical and mineralogical studies for mapping of the entire lunar surface.
  • To test the impact of a sub-satellite on the lunar surface for its future soft-landing missions.

The mission successfully detected the presence of titanium and calcium along with the accurate measurements of iron, aluminium and magnesium on the moon. The Chandrayaan Mission 1 ended on 28 August 2009 after the communications to the probe were suddenly lost. The probe lasted for 312 days. The estimated cost of this project cost was Rs.386 Crore or US$60 million.

Chandrayaan – 2 is the second lunar mission of India after the success of Chandrayaan 1. This mission was conducted for topographical researches and mineralogical studies to have a better understanding of the Moon’s origin and evolution. Chandrayaan 2 Mission was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space on July 22, 2019, by GSLV Mk III-M1 . The main aim of Chandrayaan 2 was to trace the location and abundance of lunar water on the moon’s surface.

  • Chandrayaan 2 fostered the findings of Chandrayaan 1 as reported by the ISRO.
  • The mission targeted the “South Polar region” of the Moon which was completely unexplored.

The orbiter, lander and rover collectively carried 14 scientific payloads, including a Laser Retro Reflector Array from NASA that provided precise measurements of the distance between the Moon and the Earth. Chandrayaan-2’s orbiter shall continue its mission for around a year.

Significance of Chandrayaan 2

In all the space missions, no country has ever attempted to land a spacecraft in the polar regions of the moon. This gave India a lead in space exploration on an international level.

  • Due to the moon’s axis, few regions on the South Pole always remains dark especially the craters and have higher chances of containing water.
  • The craters might have never received sunlight because it at very low angles in the Polar Regions and thus, increasing the chances of presence of ice on such surfaces.
  • The lunar surface area at the south pole of the Moon that remains in shadow is much larger than the North Pole thus making moon’s South Pole interesting. This also increases the probability of the existence of water in permanently shadowed areas around it.
  • The second de-orbiting manoeuvre for Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft was performed successfully today on September 04, 2019, beginning at 0342 hrs IST as planned, using the onboard propulsion system. The duration of the manoeuvre was 9 seconds.
  • On October 14, 2019, Chandrayaan-2 detected the presence of Argon-40 in the lunar exosphere.
  • On July 30th, 2020 Chandrayaan-2 imaged the Sarabhai Crater located on the north-east quadrant of the moon

Chandrayaan-2 Mission: Updates

  • The orbital insertion was achieved on 20th August 2019. The Orbiter has a life duration of 7 years and will continue its mission.
  • Vikram Lander had a mission life of 14 days. The landing on the moon’s surface was planned on 7th September 2019. However, the landing failed at the final stages. Vikram lander crash-landed on the moon’s surface as the velocity was higher than desired velocity (2 m/s) and the Failure Analysis Committee of ISRO concluded that a software glitch was the cause of the failure.
  • Pragyan Rover was planned for a duration of around 14 days. As the landing failed, the rover could not be deployed on the moon’s surface.

(ISRO) has released the data from the country’s second mission to the Moon, the Chandrayaan-2, for the general public.

  • The Chandrayaan-2 data is required to be in the Planetary Data System-4 (PDS4) standard, and is required to be peer reviewed scientifically and technically before acceptance as PDS archives and declared ready for sharing with the global scientific community and the general public.
  • ISSDC is the nodal centre of planetary data archive for the planetary missions of ISRO.
  • All experiments have been performing well and the data received suggests excellent capability to deliver on the pre-launch promises.
  • ISDA is the long-term archive for ISRO planetary missions.

The Chandraya-2 mission is a highly complex mission, representing a significant technological leap in comparison to ISRO’s previous missions. It included an orbiter, lander, and rover to explore the unexplored South Pole of the Moon.

The mission is designed to expand lunar scientific knowledge through detailed studies of topography, seismology, mineral identification and distribution, surface chemical composition, thermo-physical characteristics of topsoils, and the composition of the weak lunar atmosphere,  leading to a new understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon.

The Chandrayaan-2 Mission has launched on 22 July 2019 at 2:43 PM IST by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) on its course to the Moon from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Center. The craft reached lunar orbit on 20 August 2019 and began orbital positioning maneuvers for the landing of Vikram Lander.

Essay on Chandrayaan 2 Mission

Vikram and the rover were scheduled to land on the near side of the Moon in the south polar region at approximately 1:50 AM on 7 September 2019 at a latitude of about 70° south and conduct scientific experiments for one lunar day.

However, the lander deviated from its intended trajectory starting at 2.1 kilometers (1.3 mi) altitude, and communication was lost when touchdown confirmation was expected. ISRO chairman K. Sivan has confirmed initial reports suggesting an accident, stating that the location of the lander had been found, and that “it must have been a hard landing”.

Component of Chandrayaan 2 Mission

If the Chandrayaan-2 mission had successfully landed on the moon, India would have become the fourth nation in the world to do a soft landing on the moon, but this does not mean that this mission was unsuccessful. According to ISRO, Chandrayaan-2 has done 95% of its work. Technically, Chandrayaan-2 was divided into three parts, the description of all three parts are given below:

Lunar Obiter

The orbiter weighing 2379 kg will orbit the moon for one year. It has eight payloads, which will carry out different experiments. This orbiter will be able to communicate with the Indian Deep Space Network based in Bangalore. Apart from this, it will also be in contact with the lander. This orbiter is capable of generating a thousand watts of electricity from the sun’s rays. It will do the work of sending information to the earth.

Vikram Lander

The Vikram lander had to separate from the orbiter and descend into a low lunar orbit of 30 km x 100 km using its main engines. It was to then perform a  comprehensive check of all its onboard systems before attempting a soft landing that would have deployed the rover and enabled it to perform scientific activities for approximately 14 Earth days. It had the capability to communicate with Earth as well as with the orbiter & rover.

It had all the equipment to select a suitable landing site and slow down its speed to enable a soft landing. However, this failed to slow down the Pragyaan rover sufficiently to enable it to complete its task of exploring the lunar surface. The lander had a power generation capacity of 650 watts and a weight of 1471 kg, including a rover weighing 27 kg.

Pragyan Lunar Rover

The name Rover Pragyan is derived from Sanskrit, which means knowledge. Weighing 27 kg, this rover has two payloads. It is a robotic vehicle with six wheels. Through the payloads engaged in Lander Vikram and Rover Pragyan, the surface of the Moon was to study thermal physics, earthquakes, element composition of the soil, etc., but due to the loss of contact with Lander Vikram, the situation is still not clear in this context.

The objective of the Chandrayaan-2 Mission

The primary objective of the Chandrayaan-2 lander was to demonstrate the ability to soft-land on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover on the surface. Scientific goals include orbital studies of lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance, lunar exosphere, and signatures of hydroxyl and water ice. The orbiter will map the lunar surface and help in preparing its 3D map. The onboard radar will also map the surface by studying the water ice in the south-polar region and the thickness of the lunar regolith on the surface.

Advantages of Chandrayaa-2 Mission

Chandrayaan mission also has economic benefits, through this India has demonstrated cheap technology and efficient technology. This will increase India’s stature in the space market and due to cheap services, India will become a major favorite country for space trade. Will also search for a large number of minerals on the Moon, the most important of which is Helium-3 . In this way, if there is a possibility of space mining in the future, then India will be in a position of great advantage.

Along with the economic benefits, the Chandrayaan mission also has political significance. India’s stature has increased with this mission. If there is any kind of agreement regarding the right to space in the future, then India will be in the form of a major leader and policymaker. At the same time, India’s space proficiency will strengthen India in the event of future space militarization.

Importance of Chandrayaan-2 Mission for India

Even though the mission has not fulfilled all its stated objectives, it has enhanced the national pride of India. It will motivate the youth to develop a scientific temper and adopt real-life applications of science and technology. The mission is to improve the understanding of the Moon and benefit India as well as the entire humanity.

It will also promote indigenously developed space technology which will be critical for future launches and technology missions. It is important to inculcate the spirit of scientific temper, innovation, and high standards of manufacturing in India’s space sector. ISRO’s partnership with Indian startups in the space sector such as ‘Team Indus’ will also nurture space startups in India.

Budget of Chandrayaan-2 Mission

The Chandrayaan-2 Mission was launched aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) with an estimated lift-off mass of 3,850 kg (8,490 lb) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center on Sriharikota Island. As of June 2019, the allocated cost of the mission is ₹978 crore which includes ₹603 crore for the space segment and ₹375 crore as launch cost on GSLV Mk III. The Chandrayaan-2 stack was initially placed in an Earth parking orbit of 170 km perigee and 40,400 km apogee by the launch vehicle.

Present Status of Chandrayaan-2 Mission

The orbiter is successfully orbiting the Moon in its designated orbit. It is continuously transmitting data in the form of images to ISRO ground stations through various onboard sensors and cameras. On July 30, 2020, the Terrain Mapping Camera captures the Sarabhai Crater on the Moon’s northeast quadrant.

“Even after the crash of the lander and the rover, the Chandrayaan-2 mission can be said to be 95% successful as the orbiter part is intact and doing its job perfectly,” says K Sivan, Chairman, ISRO. It is true that we have reached the moon again with Chandrayaan-2.

Further lunar missions are planned by ISRO, with another attempt at a soft landing with Chandrayaan-3 by 2021. The proposed configuration would include a detachable propulsion module, a lander, and a rover, but not an orbiter. We hope that this time ISRO will get 100 percent success in the mission.

The cost of Chandrayaan 2 was approximately $141 million. It is lower than any Marvel Avenger installment.

It was able to carry 11 payloads from ISRO and other space agencies, including NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency (BAA).

Chandrayaan 1, hovering at just 100 km above the moon’s surface, took many high-resolution photographs of the moon’s topography. It also carried out mineralogical mapping and searched the surface for radioactive elements.

One of the significant accomplishments of the mission was the discovery that there were a lot of water molecules in the moon’s soil. It cost $56 million but provided crucial information about the moon’s surface.

Following the previous missions, Chandrayaan-3 is launched on 14 July 2023 from Sriharikota.

The Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM-III) sent the Chandrayaan-3 project into space from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.Chandrayaan-3 has a lander, a rover, and a module for moving forward. The whole weight of the Chandrayaan-3 spaceship is 3,900 kg. According to ISRO, Chandrayaan-3 will have three main goals. One is to show that it is safe and easy to land on the moon’s surface. Success of Chandrayaan-3

Chandrayaan-3 mission is the first to do the soft landing near the moon’s South Pole. The lander touched down on the moon at 6:04 p.m. on August 23.The Vikram lander began the last phase of the mission on August 17 when it detached from the propulsion module. They looked for sulphur and other minor elements, took measurements of the temperature, and watched for movement. Both the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover were supposed to go to sleep on September 2 and 4, when the sun went down at the landing spot. On September 22, the lander and rover are scheduled to resume operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi named the Vikram lander’s location as Shiv Shakti. He also declared August 23 as National Space Day.

The first lunar exploration mission in the history of ISRO was Chandrayan. It was launched in the year 2008 and since then 2 more follow missions have been launched under this program. 

The second follow-up mission was launched in 2019 and followed by a third follow-up mission in 2023. The success of Chandrayaan 3 has marked the country in different records such as the first country to land on the moon’s south pole and the most cost-effective execution. 

It was launched on July 14, 2023, from Sriharikota’s SDSC SHAR and landed successfully on 23rd August 2023. The mission will be carried down for 14 Earth days i.e. the Rover on the ladder will roam around the moon and study its surface for 14 days. This successful attempt has made India very sure of further development and planned missions for the Moon.

Chandrayaan-3 is India’s ambitious space mission which has made India proud. It was a successful space mission aimed to conduct a soft landing at the lunar south pole of the moon through the Vikram Lander. The spacecraft is also equipped with a Rover Pragyan consisting of payloads to study the moon’s surface. Apart from this, there were 9 sensors in the Lander.

Talking about the Payloads, there were 4 payloads in the lander namely ChaSTE, ILSA, RAMBHA, and LRA. 2 Rover payloads were APXS and LIBS. The propulsion module also contains a payload i.e. SHAPE. These payloads are designed to study the moon’s surface.

Chandrayaan-3 was active for 14 Earth days in the presence of the sun. After which, the Lander and the Rover were kept to sleep on 2 September because they could not function in the absence of sunlight. Later, efforts were made to wake Lander and Rover when the sunlight hit the moon’s surface. But ISRO revealed that there were no signals from the Lander and Rover.

Despite this, the project was a successful one and it has marked the name of India in Golden words in the history of Space.

Chandrayaan-3 is the most successful follow-up mission in the history of Indian space missions. It was followed by the successful Chandrayaan 1 and partly successful Chandrayaan 2. It also marked India as the first country to land on the Moon’s south pole. It examined the presence of water and also gathered some valuable scientific information and data about its mineral composition and its geology.

On 7th September 2019, ISRO’s Chandryaan 2 crashed while attempting a soft landing on the lunar surface. Since then, the Indian Space Research Organisation decided to build a successor to the Chandrayaan 2.

  • 06 July 2023 – Chandryaan 3 is scheduled to launch on July 14, 2023, at 14:35 Hrs. IST from the Second Launch Pad, SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota.
  • 07 July 2023 – Vehicle electrical tests completed. 
  • 11 July 2023 – The ‘Launch Rehearsal’ simulation the launch preparation and process lasting 24 hours was concluded.
  • 14 July 2023 – LVM3 M4 vehicle successfully launched Chandrayaan-3 into orbit. Chandrayaan-3, in its precise orbit, started its journey to the Moon.
  • 15 July 2023 – The first orbit-raising manoeuvre was performed at ISTRAC/ISRO, Bengaluru. The spacecraft was in 41762 km x 173 km orbit.
  • 17 July 2023 – The second orbit-raising manoeuvre was performed. The spacecraft was in 41603 km x 226 km orbit.
  • 25 July 2023 – The last orbit-raising manoeuvre was performed.
  • 01 August 2023 – The spacecraft entered the translunar orbit.
  • 05 August 2023 – Chandrayaan-3 was successfully inserted into the lunar orbit.
  • 14 August 2023 – The mission was in the orbit circularisation phase. 
  • 17 August 2023 – The Lander Module was successfully separated from the Propulsion Module.

About Chandrayaan Project

The Chandrayaan Project is one of the most successful projects in the history of India’s space agency. It was launched by ISRO for the exploration of the lunar surface.
