Vice President   Cover Letter

Vice president cover letter (with examples).

Where a resume is considered a necessity when applying for jobs , a cover letter is often thought of as an optional addition. You need to change your way of thinking — especially when applying for jobs at an executive level.

More than half of hiring managers will give your application more attention if you include a cover letter in addition to your resume. It’s your opportunity to demonstrate why you’re the right person for this particular position.

A resume simply lists your accomplishments and relevant experience in chronological order. A cover letter, on the other hand, helps to paint the hiring manager a picture of what you will bring to the company and the position you’re trying to fill.

Your application is your first impression. Don’t you want your first impression to be a lasting one -- one that leads to an interview? Your cover letter can help you stand out .

Looking for a job? These position are hiring now near you:

  • Vice President
  • Executive Vice President
  • Senior Vice President
  • Managing Director
  • Division Vice President

Parts of a Vice President Cover Letter

You want both your resume and your cover letter to display professionalism fitting for an executive team member. Keep this in mind when crafting your cover letter for any vice president positions you will be applying to. Don’t get fancy with your fonts or formatting; stick with the standard .

There are several different cover letter templates you can choose between when formatting your VP cover letter. You are not simply another employee, but a VP — regardless of whether that is VP of a specific department or vice president of the entire company. No matter which template you choose, your resume should include all of the following parts:

Header. The header should include your contact information, the information of the company you are applying to, and usually the date the cover letter is submitted. You may also want to include your LinkedIn here.

Greeting. You should open your cover letter with a professional greeting . “Dear” is the standard choice on cover letters. Be sure to address a specific person.

If the hiring manager’s name is not included in the job description, check the company website, try LinkedIn, and call if you have to. You should never address a cover letter meant for a vice president position with “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir/Madam”.

Opening paragraph. This should be an attention grabber that conveys your value as a potential employee.

Body paragraph(s). This is your sales pitch. Be sure to include keywords from the job description.

Closing paragraph. How do you close a sales pitch? With a final note and a clear CTA. Your closing paragraph is no different.

Sign-off. Your sign-off should be professional and include your full name. You may want to include your contact information here as well or instead of in the header.

Vice President Cover Letter Opening

As with the opening paragraph of any form of written communication — books, articles, academic papers — you want to immediately grab the attention of your reader . In this case, you want to appeal to the hiring manager.

Each position you apply for will have dozens, if not hundreds, of other applicants. Hiring managers are busy; they only have so much time to dedicate to each application so be clear and concise in your writing.

You want to show that you are very interested in this position and this company without coming off as fake. Your opening paragraph should be demonstrating that you are not just suitable for this position, you are their best possible choice.

The body of your cover letter may be one or more paragraphs. This is your chance to truly sell yourself as the perfect candidate for this role. What is it that makes you stand out from the competition?

Use this section to convey that you are not only the right fit for the role but a good fit for the company. Try to focus less on what you’ve already done — your resume covers your experience — and highlight what it is you can do for them in this position .

The first paragraph of your body (or the second paragraph of your cover letter) should include relevant qualifications and experiences. Don’t copy your resume word-for-word here; though bullet points are often included in this section. Some use the second paragraph to highlight their hard skills.

If you are including an additional body paragraph, use it to push knowledge of the company. Show them that this isn’t a canned response and you have done your research. Use what you’ve learned to really push that you are the best fit.

It is important to include the correct keywords in this section. Many companies will use AI to scan incoming applications for the right words — consult the job description. Generally speaking, a VP should have:

This is typically one paragraph at the end of your cover letter but can be separated into two. As with any sales pitch, you want to summarize and provide a CTA.

This isn’t the place to rehash the rest of your letter or your resume. Instead, you want to once again express your enthusiasm for the company and this position while reiterating what you could bring to the role. Leave with a clear CTA to reach out.

A  Vice President Cover Letter  should include strategic vision with the ability to execute, strong communication, interpersonal, public speaking, and leadership skills, an innovative and motivational mentality, and business acumen. A cover letter is a one-page paper that outlines why you are the best choice for the position to the recruiting manager. It goes into your resume to detail how you will contribute to the company’s success.

When you apply for a position, your cover letter is responsible for making a good first impression. Your cover letter serves as an introduction to yourself and your resume. Your cover letter is a prospective employer’s first impression of you. This single paper provides HR managers and prospective employers with their first impressions of you as a professional and an individual. The interview is not open to all applicants. An interview is not offered to anyone who applies for a position. In this first round of interviews, you could use your cover letter to attract attention to yourself. Make sure the cover letter is tailored to the specific work and free of spelling and grammatical errors.

How To Write an Executive Cover Letter

The first step in writing a great executive cover letter is to identify the needs of target employers. Take time to reflect on your career, and determine how your industry knowledge can support their long-term goals. Companies are truly looking for thought leaders who can provide invaluable thought leadership at the highest levels of an organization. Branding yourself as both a leader and an industry expert should be the primary objective of your document. Below, we’ll provide additional guidance to help you craft each section of your executive cover letter:

1. Contact information and salutation

List your name, phone number, email, and LinkedIn URL in the header of your executive cover letter. Be sure to address the hiring manager by name — Mr. or Ms. [Last Name]. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.” This shows you’ve taken the time to research the company before applying and conveys your genuine interest in the role.

2. Introduction

Lead with a powerful introduction at the top of your executive cover letter to leave a lasting impression on the hiring manager. Feature one of your strongest career achievements and emphasize your years of industry experience. This will create a connection in the reader’s mind for why your qualifications match the company.

As an executive, be sure to mention your background in leading diverse organizations and interfacing with the C-suite. Remember, hiring managers want to see you possess both the industry knowledge and leadership traits to help guide their organization.

3. Body paragraphs

The body paragraphs of your executive cover letter should feature qualifications, experience, and achievements that mirror the employer’s needs. Mention something specific about the company’s reputation, culture, or mission statement and how you can support their long-term goals. Showcase tangible examples of you transforming organizations and providing strategic leadership at the highest levels of management. This will send a clear message you’re a senior-level executive who can deliver substantial value to potential employers.

4. Executive skills and qualifications

Hiring managers aren’t interested in reading a long-winded list of skills on your executive cover letter. They want to see how you’ve applied your industry expertise and skill sets throughout your career. As you craft your paragraphs, feature key terms from the job description where they fit naturally. This helps to further showcase how your background uniquely positions you as an ideal candidate for the position. Below, you’ll find a variety of potential skills you can highlight in your document:

Key Skills and Qualifications
Business development Change management
Client relations Cross-functional leadership
C-Suite Data-driven decision making
Executive leadership Health care management
Organizational development Product management
Program management Project management
Sales leadership Stakeholder management
Strategic planning Strategy development
Talent acquisition Technical project management

5. Closing section

Finish your executive cover letter with a call to action (CTA), such as inviting the hiring manager to bring you in for an interview or welcoming them to contact you for additional information on your background. Be sure to thank the reader for their time and consideration, as showing respect also demonstrates your professionalism.

Executive Cover Letter Tips

1. feature your executive leadership experience.

Executive leadership should be a focal point of your cover letter. Companies want to see you build successful teams, establish strong work cultures, and define long-term strategies for large organizations. Provide examples of you interfacing with the C-suite, as it’s important to send a clear message that you can collaborate effectively with high-ranking executives in corporate settings.

2. Quantify your career achievements

As an executive, you need to establish a sense of scope for your achievements by incorporating hard numbers, metrics, and monetary figures. For example, you might mention the size of the company or gross annual revenue figures. If you can’t quantify an achievement, focus instead on how your strategies, initiatives, and contributions positively impacted the organization.

3. Brand yourself as an industry thought leader

Companies expect executive candidates to be well-versed in their industry, providing strategic leadership to improve market positioning and drive positive business outcomes. As you craft your cover letter, emphasize your experience as a thought leader within your space. Why should i include an executive cover letter -.

Cover letters play a more substantial role in the hiring process for executive candidates. Companies want to gain a better sense of who you are as a professional beyond what’s already been stated on your resume. Use this opportunity to provide unique insights into your personal values and why you’re the right fit for the organization’s culture.

Should I use an artificial intelligence tool to write my cover letter? -

Using an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to start your cover letter can be a viable option, but avoid having AI write the entire document for you. Despite recent technological advancements, AI-generated documents are often generic and prone to grammatical errors. Your cover letter needs to tell your unique story, and that isn’t possible without your input.

How long should my cover letter be? -

As an executive, it’s easy to end up with a long cover letter due to your extensive work history and experience. That said, it’s normally best to keep your cover letter concise and focused, even at the executive level. Limit your document to only three or four paragraphs. This ensures your cover letter emphasizes your most impressive and relevant qualifications.

How to create a good cover letter for a vice president: free tips and tricks

An entry-level candidate will find it rather hard to be considered when you're applying for a leadership role. However, if you have solid experience, here are some recommendations to polish your document and make you instantly appealing for a hiring manager. The following vice president cover letter example will give you a clear idea how to craft one of your own.

Do a little bit of research and find out what the company wants from a person in this position. If you write your letter using the company’s keywords and vision, you will sound diligent and resourceful.

Don’t think you can get away with vague and generic phrases. If you fail to point out to the company’s problem areas and performance, you will not sound convincing and knowledgeable.

The opening paragraph is important. For example, if you became aware that the company is struggling financially, you can open up as, “At Soft Serve Inc., a sales department in my charge increased revenue by 200 percent and cut down expenditure by 10 percent.”

Don’t start your letter by using clichés such as ‘“I'm writing to apply…” or “As you can see on my resume…” Especially when the position you’re applying to is expected to solve the company’s problems. Use some attention-grabbers and point out to areas where you can really help.

You can use bullet points to make it easier to look through your letter. However, make sure that you not only mention your duties but also point out the impact of your efforts. Also, line up your achievements and qualifications with the job requirements.

Don’t end your letter with a bland ‘thank you for your time.’ Experts advise to add a call to action. Say that you would like to meet up for an interview. Some specialists suggest you to say that you will follow up with a call and an email but it can sound too pretentious, so it’s up to you.

Must Read: How to Get Your Cover Letter Noticed by Employers

The cover letter is kind of a test for you. It tests to see whether you can craft a compelling narrative about yourself. By testing your cover letter writing abilities, the company is trying to assess whether or not you would be able to craft compelling narratives on behalf of that company in the future.

Many companies will let you optionally attach a cover letter along with your application. If you take this as a challenge for yourself and do so, it will showcase your firm commitment to the company, and allows you to tell a story about yourself as a leader and as a collaborator. A solid cover letter will leave a long-lasting impression in the recruiters mind and will help make you stand out from other candidates.

And here's the most important reason of all: the process involved is more important than the output. When you get into the cover letter writing process, you're compelled to figure out the story about yourself, and how you are the best solution for the company's pain.

You're advised to conduct pre-interview research about the company so that you know exactly what you're meant to tackle, and you know exactly how to position yourself throughout the interview. Once you've written your Executive Vice President cover letter, you'll have a mental reference point about how you want to talk about yourself across all of your interviews, and that's incredibly valuable!

Structure of the Executive Vice President cover letter

The most effective and impact making cover letters consists of three core parts.

The first part is the introduction. The first paragraph should include the following key details: which company you're applying to, what role you're applying to, and a summary of how you will add value to the company.

Many cover letters fail to mention either the job title or the name of the company. This provides a clear indication to the employer that you're using the same cover letter for many companies, which further indicates that you aren't serious enough or you don't care enough about making a good impression. If this is the case, it's better to not write a cover letter at all! And, always make sure you're sending the right cover letter to the right company.

Most of the time, applicants take advantage of cover letter examples or cover letter samples , and forget to clean it up. You need to ensure that you've put in all the hard work in personalization of your cover letter - be professional!

It shouldn't really be about you - rather, it should be about how you're excited about what the company is doing, and about how you're the perfect fit to solve their needs. And if you feel that you can't directly address the job requirements on the company website, you may need to consider applying for a different role instead.

The second part is the narrative. The second paragraph includes your story where you tell about yourself, and where you showcase that your past experiences have made you capable enough to be the best suited candidate available for that specific position.

Use it to address questions that might come up in an interview, such as “what was your proudest moment”, “how did you overcome failure”, and “tell us about a time when you took an initiative from start to end successfully.”

Always remember to customize your cover letter to the specific employer and the specific role that you're applying for rather than using a standard one for all which lands in the bin.

Finally, the last part is the conclusion. In the last & closing paragraph, summarize what value addition you'll bring to the company and why you're the perfect fit for the specific role. Express your excitement about being a part of the team in the near future. Remind them that they should reach out to you to schedule an interview so that they can learn more about how you're the best person to solve their problems.

With a cover letter created with the above structure, you're definitely gonna leave a solid impression that will grab the attention of hiring managers which significantly increases your chances of getting a job interview.

Must Read: Tips for Customizing your Cover Letter

Before you write a single word of your cover letter, you must first prepare your thoughts and pen down on a blank paper.

Ask questions to yourself like: What are your strengths? Where do you stand as a Executive Vice President? Which of your work experiences is the best so far for the companies you've worked with?

Similarly, conduct research on the company . What is their product, their competitors, their mission, and what is their culture? What problem statement are they trying to solve with the Executive Vice President role that you're applying to?

So now you must be having 2 stories - one for you and the other of the company. Write down both the stories on a paper. Review your two stories and your pre-interview research, and use that to hammer out your introduction and your conclusion. !

Now bring the whole thing down to a single page eliminating all the unnecessary and unrequired stuff. When the hiring managers assess your cover letter or your resume, they do not evaluate you on the basis of your sum of your experiences but on the average of your experiences. Hence, try to eliminate or cut out every single irrelevant word you've put in as it's gonna bring down the averages of your experience.

One of the simple ways to make sure that your cover letter stands out from the numerous other candidates' cover letters is to personalize your cover letter which helps you grab the hiring manager's attention. Express your enthusiasm about the job showcasing why you're the perfect fit for that specific role and how excited you are to be the part of the team.

Make use of the job description to which you are applying for which will help you to write a cover letter that clearly demonstrates how your skills, experience, or background make you the best available candidate to be a Executive Vice President for the company. You should demonstrate exactly how much you are interested in the organization and the position, showing that you are able to meet the needs of the company.

Don't forget to learn about the organization. Take some time out to peruse the company's website and learn their values, mission, and then incorporate that information in your cover letter. Let the recruiters know how you came across this position and detail how your ideals are in line with the organization's goals and how your plans for your career can benefit their objectives.

Always make sure you only focus on the skills in the cover letter which the organisation demands and have highlighted in their job description. Specifically, the ones that are listed as being required separately, do not forget to put them in. Give a brief on these skills by offering concrete examples of how you are using or have used them with any success story(if any).

Proofreading & Iterating - Once you're finished writing your cover letter, edit your cover letter and ask for the feedback from your friend or of you have any consultant/mentor, and repeat this process until you and your reviewer agree and are satisfied that you are the best fit for the job from all other candidates that are applying. Learn to use grammarly .

Key points to remember - don't worry too much about the salutation or the greeting. It doesn't matter whether you use "dear sir or madam" or "dear hiring manager" or "to whomsoever it may concern" - the ultimate goal is to demonstrate that you're the stand out candidate out of everyone who's applying for that job posting. Just focus on the core value that you're bringing to the company! If you experience difficulty in composing your cover letter professionally, you can hire an essay writer at CustomWritings to have your cover letter or job application paper written from scratch.

Must Read: Things to remember while sending a Cover Letter

Even with a use of a cover letter sample or template, sometimes it can get even more trickier to make a perfect cover letter. Below listed are some tips to keep in mind when writing your Executive Vice President cover letter.

  • Use a proper cover letter format (one-inch margins, line spacing of 1.15, and an 11pt or 12pt classic font).
  • Always have an attractive yet professional cover letter header.
  • Show you're the best for the position and explain why you want to be part of the company and the value you will bring.
  • Always remember to provide your contact information (e.g. phone number and email address), and if possible add a link to your LinkedIn profile which brings more professionalism.
  • Do not add or share other social media links such as Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.
  • Always proofread your cover letter before sharing with hiring managers. Double check for any typos or grammatical errors. Spell check is your best friend here! Use grammarly!

Make note of these key points and remember that you're selling yourself to not only the hiring manager but also the company.
