For an increasing number of students worldwide, Babson is at the top of their business school target list.

However, with an impressive entrepreneurship track record and both 1 and 2-year programs, the competition to join Babson’s elite MBA is more difficult than ever.  

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you use your Babson admissions interview to stand out. We’ve rounded up not only our best tips but have also included sample interview questions to ensure you give your Babson interview your best shot. 

Making sure you shine during your Babson interview is no easy task. 

Babson interviews, since they are conducted by the admissions committee, tend to be highly personalized and based on your whole application . During the interview, the interviewer is also trying to gauge how solid your motivations for wanting to pursue an MBA are and how interested you seem in the Babson program.

Interviewers often ask many standard MBA interview questions, as well as questions designed to test just how collaborative and entrepreneurially-minded you really are. You can also expect numerous follow-up questions.

Every year, Babson searches for outstanding, entrepreneurially-minded professionals to join its annual two-year, full-time MBA class. With a strong emphasis on diversity, there is no “typical” Babson student, yet the average admitted student does tend to have a 640 average GMAT score – though the GMAT/GRE requirement has been waived for the time being.

Though no interview is 100% predictable, Babson interviews do tend to center around a fairly standard list of MBA interview questions. As such, we have prepared some model questions below that previous candidates have received in their past Babson interviews.

Though these are not all the potential questions you could possibly receive during your Babson interview, preparing for these (and any follow-up questions you think you might be asked) should give you a very solid foundation for your interview.

If you’re still not quite confident with your interview skills, our interview experts can help you craft your answers or prepare you for the Babson interview through mock interviews tailored to your profile. 

Despite your most diligent preparation, you will almost always receive a question you had not prepared. 

First, stay calm and take a deep breath . You have already made it this far in the process, and one question will not trip you up!

Second, make sure you directly answer the question the interviewer asked you. For example, if the interviewer asks you about a time you had to deal with a difficult manager, make sure to tell a story about a difficult manager and how you handled the situation. 

If you’re having trouble thinking of an answer or an example to support your answer , however, take a drink of water to give yourself a few more minutes to think. If you really can’t think of an example from your personal or professional experience, you can use a hypothetical answer about how you would act in a certain situation. 

Finally, assume that the interviewer is testing how you think on your feet and respond to questions you didn’t prepare in advance. Though your answer might not be as polished as if you’d had weeks to rehearse it, smile and confidently respond to show you can handle any question they throw at you.

Common App Personal Essay

The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response. Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don‘t feel obligated to do so.

Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

For the Babson MBA 2023-2024 application, the “Three Fun Facts” essay is a chance to showcase your personality and unique qualities. Here’s a brief blueprint for your response:

• Select Diverse Facts:  Choose fun facts that represent different aspects of your life. These could be personal hobbies, unique skills, or interesting life experiences.
• Concise Descriptions:  Keep each fact concise and to the point. You only have 150 words or less, so make every word count.

Does Babson College have supplemental essays?

Yes — there are two Babson College supplemental essays. In general, supplemental essays are additional essays that colleges ask for to provide more details about your unique interest in the school.  Each school has different supplemental essay requirements . However, there are a few common supplemental essay topics that you’ll likely see in various college applications. The most common are the  “Why School” and “Why Major” essays.

For the first of your two required Babson College supplemental essays, you will need to combine a Why Babson essay and Why Major essay into one 500-word response. You also have the option to submit a one-minute video that answers the prompt, in lieu of an essay. 

The second of the Babson College supplemental essays asks applicants to share more of their identity and background. Essentially, this is a diversity essay. In this essay, Admissions wants to learn more about what has shaped you–and, most importantly, how you will bring your unique experiences to campus.

Babson College Essay Requirements

In total, you must submit three Babson College essays. The first of these essays is the personal statement. Your personal statement is an essay that introduces critical aspect(s) of yourself to the admissions committee. You can submit the same personal statement to all of the colleges you apply to via the Common App . Applicants may choose one of the seven Babson College essay prompts for the personal statement. Babson College Supplemental Essay #1: Why Babson Essay/Why Major Essay

Here is the first of the two Babson College supplemental essay prompts:

The babson education prepares students for all types of careers across business, entrepreneurship, social innovation, and more. tell us about your interest in this area of study and in babson specifically. (500 words maximum) we invite you to submit your answer in either essay or video format. if you choose to submit a video, please limit your response to a 1-minute video, which can be submitted via a shared link to youtube or another video hosting website. please ensure your video is set to public and is accessible to the admission committee..

Let’s discuss what this Babson essay is looking for. As we shared above, schools often want to know why you wish to attend their institution as well as why you want to study your intended major. In this 500-word essay, Babson College wants you to do both. 

Specifically, this Why Major essay asks applicants to shed light on their interest in entrepreneurship and business since that is Babson’s special focus.Additionally, as a Why Babson essay, admissions asks why you hope to study at the school. Responses to this prompt need to be specific. Now is the time to research programs, internships, professors, or any other opportunities only found at Babson. Be sure to mention what most interests you about studying at Babson.

This Babson College essay prompt is unique in that you can respond in written or video format. The video option offers the advantage of allowing those who express themselves verbally to shine. Regardless of the format you choose (whether the written or video option), you must answer the prompt fully.

Now, let’s look at the second of the Babson College supplemental essay prompts:

This Babson supplemental essay is a version of the diversity essay, another common topic for college essays. Keep in mind that diversity is a broad term. Beyond referring to race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and other common dimensions of diversity, the term can also refer to any lived experience. For example, maybe you were the only female in a house full of men, or perhaps you lived in 13 countries as a child. In this sense, every person has many dimensions of diversity in their lived experience.

At Babson, diversity and inclusion are valued. As such, this Babson supplemental essay seeks to gather more information not only about your ability to be self-reflective of your experiences but also about how you will use those experiences to contribute to Babson’s inclusive, collaborative spirit.

Four Tips for Writing Babson College Essays

1. start early.

As we stated, there are three Babson essays you will need to complete – your personal statement and two Babson supplemental essays. Starting early is critical. Normally, essay prompts are released by August 1. However, you can begin brainstorming even before the prompts are released. Think about life experiences and personality traits that are central to who you are. In August, begin to work on your essay drafts. You will likely need several drafts of each essay and time in between writing them to give yourself breaks. These pauses within the drafting process can often provide greater clarity for final edits. 

2. Choose a written or video format

For one of your Babson supplemental essays, you have the option to submit a 1-minute video that encapsulates your response to the prompt. If you choose the video option, be sure to spend time drafting a script and planning out how and where you will film your video. Though the video may seem like the easier option, it presents different challenges such as ensuring you come across as positive and professional in your speech. Be sure to provide specific examples and details in your response to the question, just as you would in your essay.

3. Answer the whole prompt

The Babson College essay prompts are unique in that they ask multiple questions in one prompt. As we mentioned, the first of your Babson supplemental essays is a Why Major essay and a Why Babson essay. Be sure you answer both of the prompt’s questions clearly in your response. Look for specific details you can highlight in your Why Babson essay. Perhaps you want to highlight which of the 24 Babson college majors, also known as concentrations, interest you.  

In the second of your Babson supplemental essays, you must discuss an aspect of your identity that is important to you along with how it will inform your engagement with Babson’s campus culture. Reflect deeply on your life experiences before responding to your Babson College essay prompts.

4. Highlight Babson values

One of the unstated but underlying goals of the Babson supplemental essay prompts is to see how aligned you are with Babson’s values . To be successful in demonstrating that you understand them, familiarize yourself with the school’s standards. What does Babson mean when they say they value integrity, collaboration, diversity, innovation, and excellence? How do you align with these values? When choosing topics for your Babson supplemental essays, consider which of your experiences can most strongly demonstrate these principles.

Are the Babson essays optional?

No, none of the Babson essays are optional. You must submit your personal statement and your two Babson College supplemental essays to have a complete application.

While none of the essays are optional, you do have the choice to submit a video instead of the first Babson supplemental essay. If you choose to do so, make sure your video responds fully to the prompt and provides details and examples to flesh out your arguments. Prepare well for filming your video– make sure it is easy to see and hear you throughout.

You also have the option of applying to Babson early or regular decision. Within the early options, you may apply Early Decision I or Early Action by November 15. Keep in mind that Early Decision is a binding agreement, meaning that you are committing to attending Babson if they admit you. If you decide you need more time to work on your essays, consider applying Early Decision II or Regular Decision by January 2. This will allow you more time to develop a strong application. Since Babson College admissions officers must read thousands of essays, one way to make sure your essay stands out is to start off with a hook. A hook is a literary term for an opening that captures the reader’s attention. Hooks can take many forms. Perhaps you start with a bit of dialogue, a vivid description of a scene, a thought-provoking question, or an unexpected idea. If you aren’t sure whether your hook is captivating, ask friends to read it and tell you if the opening makes them want to keep reading your essay.

2. Edit well

Speaking of support from others, make sure you get guidance throughout the editing process. Some writers say that editing is the heart of writing since it is through editing that you refine your voice and message. When you edit, consider the four Cs: 

• Is it clear? Do my ideas flow and make logical sense? Are any details missing that would help make my story clearer? 
• Is it grammatically correct? A grammatically correct essay demonstrates your writing abilities as well as the care you took to write a strong Babson supplemental essay.
• Is it concise? Being concise is critical for a few reasons. First, you have limited space in each of your Babson supplemental essays. By removing nonessential words or phrases, you make more space for important ideas. Secondly, a concise essay is easier to follow. When sentences are too wordy, they can easily lose the reader’s attention. Read your writing out loud to see if each sentence can be read in a single breath. If you have to pause to take a breath while reading, your sentence is probably too long. 
• Is it compelling? To answer this question with a confident “yes,” you will need to get a second or third opinion. Ask your reader to be honest about whether the essay topic and style make it interesting to read. If not, maybe you need to play with the essay format, sentence structures, or hook.

The Babson education prepares students for all types of careers across business, entrepreneurship, social innovation, and more. Tell us about your interest in this area of study and in Babson specifically. (500 words maximum)

There’s only one trick to generating a straightforward explanation of your academic interests: be honest. Don’t waste time trying to think of what admissions “wants” you to say! Try to tell a story about your choices and intended area of study. How can you use your life experiences to reveal something about what you value and what excites you intellectually? The essays that stick with us are the ones that jump off the page with concrete descriptions from real life. What interests you and why? Connect your intended major to some prior experience and/or passion; how have you gone about learning more about your subject of interest? Finally, connect your interest to Babson, specifically. Spend about a half hour doing some research on the school’s website to identify courses, clubs, or other aspects of the campus and city that will enrich your education and experience there as a student.

Odds are that this isn’t the first Diversity Essay prompt you’ve come across this year—even if the prompt doesn’t explicitly use the word. If it is, however, please read on. Babson wants to accept students from a range of backgrounds who will contribute to a collaborative university community, so tell admissions about what makes you you and how you will engage with others on campus. Think about times when people have been intrigued by or curious about your identity, skillset, or background. Maybe your mom was the first female VP at the brokerage she works for, and you want to follow in her footsteps, breaking ground for women in the finance industry. Perhaps you lived abroad for a few years, which imbued you with a uniquely international perspective on the American economy, and you hope to explore that topic with your roommates. What do you hope to share with others about your lived experience? How will you incorporate this element of your identity into your college years? Show admissions that you’re eager to contribute to their inclusive campus community. Bonus points if you can reference a specific component of the Babson experience (think clubs, classes, volunteer opportunities, etc.) to show you’ve done your due diligence.

If you decide to record a video instead of writing an essay, make sure you write an outline so you don’t waste 15 seconds with “ums” and “uhs”! Everyone is different; maybe a list of bullets is enough for you or maybe you want to write an entire script and have your sibling hold it up for you like a cue card. You can record in either landscape or portrait mode, just make sure your entire face is visible in the frame and that you look tidy, but no need to go full glam or to do a full-body shot. Just be your natural self!

Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school? If I had to pick, the achievement, topping my list would be my nomination for the 2024 Poets & Quants Best & Brightest. What makes this incredibly special to me is that it came from a professor who isn’t just any faculty member, but also the Director of Faculty. Our connection went beyond the typical student-teacher relationship; he saw me in action both in the classroom and as a leading voice for my class cohort. To receive this nomination from him felt like a genuine acknowledgment of not just my academic prowess but also my leadership within our cohort.

Sure, there have been moments of pride over an A on a project that consumed my nights or being chosen by my peers as both their Class Rep and VP of the One Year MBA. But this nomination? It’s different. It weaves together all those individual accolades and efforts, painting a picture of my journey in its entirety. Without those late nights, leadership roles, and, frankly, every single win along the way – big or small – this nomination wouldn’t have been possible. That’s what etches it into my heart as my proudest moment.

What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career? I’ve had my share of measurable successes, like smashing sales targets by 145% in my first year and clinching the Sales Rookie of the Year title. Yet, my proudest moments stem more from how I achieve rather than just the achievements themselves.

As an Account Sales Engineer in my final year at Cognex, I managed some key accounts, including a major manufacturing facility in Wisconsin. We had a modest $40,000 in sales with them in the previous year. My philosophy in business, and in life, is to always be a helpful resource, and be ready to lend a hand. With this mindset, I was able to boost our sales with this facility to over $200,000 in a single year.

However, the real highlight for me came when I had to inform my contact at this facility that I was leaving Cognex for my MBA at Babson. He shared that their decision to heavily invest in Cognex solutions was not just about the product fit but significantly influenced by the value I added to the process. That acknowledgment means more to me than any sales figure ever could.

Why did you choose this business school? Choosing Babson for my MBA was a decision driven by a mix of personal and professional factors. At the time, I was living in Minnesota, far from my home state of Massachusetts. The desire to return to my roots was strong, and Babson’s location offered that perfect bridge back home.

More than just geography, Babson presented a unique opportunity that aligned with my career and financial considerations—their one-year MBA program. After six years of working in a corporate environment, the prospect of leaving a stable income for a full-time MBA was daunting, especially when most programs span two years. Babson’s accelerated program not only halved the time I’d be without a job but also eased the financial strain of further education. This was significantly sweetened by the Presidential Scholarship I received, which not only made the program more affordable but also made me feel deeply valued and recognized by the institution.

However, the decisive factor in my choice was Babson’s celebrated focus on entrepreneurial thinking. Babson champions the concept of Entrepreneurial Thought and Action, a philosophy not confined to launching startups but applicable across any business context. This approach resonated with me. I was captivated by the idea of applying entrepreneurial thinking to diverse professional scenarios, from navigating the corporate landscape of a Fortune 500 company to spearheading a nimble startup team. Babson’s ethos of innovation and adaptability in any setting was the ultimate seal on my decision, embodying the exact mindset I wanted to cultivate in my own career.

Who was your favorite MBA professor? This has been by far the hardest question to answer on this list. One of Babson’s standout features is undoubtedly its faculty. The level of engagement and dedication they show in fostering exceptional learning experiences is something I haven’t seen matched elsewhere. My approach to my MBA was to gain a broad spectrum of knowledge, so I immersed myself in a variety of courses, from Finance and Marketing to Operations and even Programming. Across the board, the professors made each class not just educational but genuinely enjoyable.

I must emphasize that all Babson faculty deserve recognition for their incredible work. Yet, if pressed to choose a favorite, Professor Gary Ottley would be my unequivocal choice. He taught my Marketing course during a particularly intensive summer semester. I met Gary at our orientation, and his passion for teaching was palpable from the start. He warned us that his course would be challenging, but something told me it would also be rewarding. My intuition didn’t lead me astray; it turned out to be one of my most memorable academic experiences.

Case studies, a cornerstone of MBA programs, often lean towards the tedious side. However, Gary had a unique talent for making these discussions not only engaging but also entertaining—a remarkable feat for a class of 50 students over the course of a two-and-a-half-hour period. His ability to do this speaks volumes about his passion for his job. It’s evident he loves what he does, and this enthusiasm radiates in his classroom. That’s why, for me, Gary Ottley stands out as my favorite professor at Babson.

What was your favorite course as an MBA? Reflecting on my time at Babson, I’ve dipped my toes into a wide range of classes, given my urge to grasp a bit of everything. But if I had to pinpoint one class that truly resonated with me, it would be Programming for Business Analytics. You see, coming from an engineering background, I surprisingly never got around to diving deep into programming languages. That changed dramatically with my MBA, especially with my focus on Business Analytics & Machine Learning.

Imagine this: Spring semester arrives, and I’m suddenly wrestling with R, Python, SQL, and Advanced Excel—all at once. It was a mountain of a challenge. Yet, the journey was made surprisingly smoother, thanks to some incredible professors. But the real game-changer for me was the Programming for Business Analytics class. Led by the fantastic Professor Nada Hashmi, this class was split into two thrilling parts—one dedicated to SQL and the other to Python.

What made this class my favorite wasn’t just the content. Professor Hashmi brought an energy and clarity to the material that made everything click. In just 14 weeks, I went from novice to feeling genuinely proficient in SQL and Python. But it didn’t stop there. Professor Hashmi wove Generative AI into our learning, showing us how to supercharge our scripts and really push the boundaries of what we could achieve. It was this class that not only solidified my programming skills, but also sparked a real excitement in me about the possibilities these skills opened up in the real world. It was an incredible journey, and I walked away not just with knowledge, but with inspiration.

What was your favorite MBA event or tradition at your business school? Oh, Babson really went all out with events – you wouldn’t believe the number of notifications I’d get every week about something new happening on campus. There was such a variety, from the big, lavishly-sponsored gatherings to the more intimate, casual meetups. But if I had to choose my absolute favorite, it would be this seemingly unassuming one-hour webinar I attended in my spring semester.

The webinar was led by Jeremy Schifeling, a guru in the marketing world and the Marketing Director at Khan Academy at the time. It was titled “Job Search 2.0: LinkedIn + ChatGPT”, focusing on how to harness generative AI to enhance your LinkedIn profile and tailor your job applications. Jeremy wasn’t just a speaker; he was a performer, blending deep insights with charisma in a way that made everything click.

Honestly, I was kind of at a standstill with my job hunt before that webinar. Yet, after applying just a handful of Jeremy’s strategies, I suddenly saw a spike in interview invitations. It was like I found the secret code to the job market. That webinar didn’t just change my approach to job searching; it gave me a boost when I needed it most. Calling it my favorite Babson event doesn’t quite do it justice; it was a game-changer for me.

Looking back over your MBA experience, what is the one thing you’d do differently and why? Reflecting on my MBA journey at Babson, there’s honestly little I’d change. I’ve poured my heart and soul into this experience, reaping rewards far beyond my expectations. Yet, if I were to pinpoint a minor adjustment, it ties back to an early logistical decision.

After moving from Minnesota back to Massachusetts, my wife and I initially were living at my parents’ house until we found a place to live that worked logistically both for my school and her work. The commute to Babson was a beast—over an hour each way. Eventually, my wife landed a job in Newton, and we settled in Needham, perfectly sandwiched between our commitments. This slashed our commutes to a mere 10 minutes, a change that felt nothing short of miraculous.

But here’s the twist: living so close to campus meant I could easily zip home between classes. Sounds perfect, right? In many ways, it was, especially for lunch breaks or quick study sessions. Yet, it also meant I missed out on some of the spontaneous interactions and deeper campus engagement I might have had if I’d stayed around more.

I wouldn’t trade those short commutes for the world, though, especially since it meant more time with Olive, our 28 pound Goldendoodle. Knowing she wasn’t alone all day was a comfort I can’t put a price on. Still, part of me wonders if staying on campus more would have enriched my MBA experience with deeper connections and fuller immersion in Babson’s vibrant community. It’s a small pondering, though, in an otherwise invaluable chapter of my life.

What did you love most about your business school’s town?  That’s an easy one: the surrounding neighborhood. Babson sits nestled in a cozy residential area, surrounded by stunning homes that catch your eye. There’s this one side street right next to the school, lined with gorgeous colonial-style mansions. My wife and I drove by them during our first visit to the campus, and wow, were we blown away! In that moment, it all clicked for me. I understood exactly why I was heading to Business school: one day, I wanted to call a beautiful area like that my home.

What surprised you the most about business school? The most eye-opening part of business school for me was definitely the hands-on, real-world applications. Coming from an engineering background, where most of what I learned was theoretical, the shift to practical learning was both surprising and enlightening. Suddenly, I was not just studying business concepts, but I was also seeing how these strategies and philosophies played out in actual companies. Babson took this to another level by allowing us to dive into a product development project, making it feel like we were part of a corporation tasked with launching their next big thing. It was this blending of education and real-world experience that I found incredibly valuable. It went beyond traditional learning; it felt like I was truly gaining firsthand business experience.

Which MBA classmate do you most admire? Picking just one classmate to talk about feels almost unfair, you know? I’m surrounded by so many incredible people at Babson, each with their own unique stories and achievements. But, if I have to choose just one, it’s got to be Samantha, or Sam Chin as we know her. Sam’s journey to Babson is nothing short of inspiring. She didn’t just start a business; she saw it through to a successful exit—a dream ticked off the entrepreneurial wish list. And yet, selling her business wasn’t a finish line for her. It was a stepping stone. Sam saw it as an opportunity for growth, for learning, and Babson was her chosen next step. That’s the kind of forward-thinking I admire.

But what really stands out about Sam isn’t just her professional success. It’s her humility. Despite having achievements that many of us aspire to, Sam’s never carried herself as if she’s above anyone else. She’s humble, endlessly curious, and genuinely passionate about learning. Her engagement isn’t limited to just the classroom; she’s a presence felt everywhere, always ready to support her peers and lend a hand without a second thought. Sam’s approach to life, her care for others, and her drive make her not just a person I admire but a future leader I’m excited to see in action. She’s the kind of classmate who inspires you to be better, simply by being herself.

What are the top two items on your professional bucket list?

1) Either be at the helm of my own venture or to lead a major corporation as its CEO. I’ve always felt a deep connection to leadership roles; there’s something incredibly fulfilling about guiding a team towards a common goal. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t shy away from the spotlight or the tough decisions that come with it. I believe my optimistic nature plays a big role in this; it’s something that not only keeps me going but also seems to uplift those around me.

Throughout my academic life and into my early career, I’ve gravitated towards leadership positions, each experience enriching my understanding and love for guiding others. Holding a significant leadership role in a professional context is more than a goal—it’s where I see my passion, skills, and optimistic outlook converging. It’s a dream I’m actively working towards, with every step of my journey bringing me closer to that reality.

2) Be in a role that affords me the ideal work-life balance. I envision myself in a position where I’m financially successful yet not at the expense of precious moments in my personal life. For me, family takes precedence. My wife and I are eagerly looking forward to starting our family within the next couple of years. And one thing I’m certain of is my desire to be present for those irreplaceable, once-in-a-lifetime moments with them. This aspiration drives my career choices, as I seek opportunities that allow me to thrive professionally without compromising my commitment to my family.

What made Ryan such an invaluable addition to the Class of 2024?

“As Faculty Director of the MBA program in which Ryan is enrolled – Babson’s One Year MBA – I have direct contact and interaction with all of Babson’s MBA students. I met Ryan on his first day as an MBA student (during Orientation), and was immediately impressed with his maturity, ambition, and drive. It was no surprise to me at all when he was elected one of two Section Representatives from his cohort, chosen by his fellow students.

Following his election, I met and was in close contact with Ryan (and his colleague Ana Paula Shleske Oliveros, the other elected Section Rep) consistently throughout the first half of his year at Babson. As a representative of his class, Ryan was always vocal and vociferous in his advocacy for his fellow students, truly looking out for their interests. His contributions directly (and positively!) impacted his fellow students’ experiences at Babson. Babson Olin Essays Writing and Editing Support

I enrolled with Experts’ Guidance Program in 2009 (I am writing this piece in 2013). The material was simply superb, it covered, in an organized and selective way, almost everything that is worthwhile in the GMAT world. However I couldn’t beat the GMAT beast and couldn’t score more than 610 in my multiple attempts. In 1919, 27 students enrolled into the Babson Institute and the first classes commenced in the former home of Roger and Grace Babson on Abbott Road in Wellesley Hills. Uniqueness in MBA Pedagogy

Babson MBA focuses on experiential learning by exposing students to real-world situations that enable them to access the current trends and provide value-added solutions to the companies. Students work in groups over Student Consulting Projects while solving problems that inculcates critical thinking approach and instills teamwork skills in them. The students can choose the Management Consulting Field Experience (MCFE) elective course that would further expose them to real-world challenging situations. Managing the Consulting Experience is another elective course that instills leadership skills in students. The MBA students are supposed to act as Project leader for an undergraduate consulting team who work on a Consulting project with the client organization.

In order to imbibe Entrepreneurial Thought and Action in students, the Babson Consulting Alliance Program BCAP partners with global organizations, where the students work in groups over projects and provide valuable recommendations to the consulting organizations. Babson has been a leader in entrepreneurship over the past few years. The unique Entrepreneurial Thought and Action methodology teaches students to create a balance between creativity, action and experimentation while approaching business issues. Students are encouraged to identify and assess opportunities, think out of the box, and challenge the status-quo that imbibes an innovative, analytical and problem-solving approach in them. The Arthur M. I was looking only for direction for my essays from expert’s global when i signed up with them. Once i did sign up they gave me this direction in the form of a self assessment document which would help them understand me & my perspective better. This was all I needed from them and the self introspection inspired me to write my own MBA admission essays. My mentor did write me some essays. How to Write a College Essay: The Personal Statement and Writing Supplement

Whether you are applying to college through The Common Application or directly from the college’s website, you will be asked to write a college essay, sometimes called the personal statement. Here, we will explore how to write a college admission essay you feel proud of by exploring tips from college admissions counselors and looking at college essay examples for admission.

The Basics: How to Write a College Essay

Before we talk about how to write a college admission essay, let’s take a step back and talk about the process and how to set yourself up for success.

Start early

It may be intimidating to sit in front of a blank computer page and start writing, so think about gathering your thoughts in a different format. Before you sit down to write, consider taking notes on your phone or on sticky notes around your room as ideas come to you. When you do sit down to write, try laying out your ideas in an outline first and then draft it into complete sentences later. Breaking down the process in this way can be less daunting and will allow you to focus on the topic and the most important part of the essay—YOU!

Schedule time to write

No matter how hard you try, there will always be something that seems more pressing than sitting down to write your essay. As you prepare for your college application process, schedule time into your day to write. Find a quiet, distraction-free space, and write your thoughts down. Whether you just work on a few sentences or you’re able to write the bulk of your essay, you’ll be glad you set time aside once it comes time to submit your applications.

Read the instructions

This is the most simple yet possibly the most important part of the essay-writing process. You want to read each part of your application carefully, including the essay prompt. If you submit something that doesn’t follow directions, the admissions counselors may assume you won’t know how to follow directions, and it could affect your chances of getting into your desired school.

The Common Application

The Common Application, known as Common App, is accepted by more than 900 schools , and helps streamline the tedious process of applying for colleges. Information, including your name, address, grades, extracurriculars, and parental employment, will just be entered one time so you don’t have to spend extra time inputting this in multiple applications.

It’s a good idea to start your Common Application around August 1, when applications open up. This will give you enough time to get all of your background information in and explore any questions you have before you get ready to start your senior year. The essay you will write in the Common App will be used by all colleges you choose to apply to, so it’s important to keep your essay broad but specific to yourself.

When you apply via the Common Application you will be asked to write an essay responding to one of seven prompts . Be sure to read each prompt carefully and choose the one that speaks to you the most or the one you feel you have the most to write about.

Editing the College Essay: Dos and Don’ts

Before we get into tips for college application essays, we want to make sure we don’t skip over an important step in the writing process. It is essential that you go into your essay-writing process with the expectation that you will write multiple drafts of your essay. Admissions counselors are expecting your best work, so you don’t want to submit a first draft.

There are many options when it comes to editing your essay. You can have a parent or guardian read your essay if you feel they are capable of giving good feedback, you could seek outside help from a paid service, and you can ask peers or teachers to help edit your essay. Any of these choices can be a good option, but just be sure to not let anyone overedit your essay. You still want it to sound like yourself.

Things to look for when editing your essay

Edits can be done in a couple of rounds, and while you want to make sure your essay is perfect, that doesn’t mean each draft needs to be perfect. Your first draft should get all of your ideas onto paper. Your second draft should sharpen up your ideas and focus on your content. Show, don't tell. Your third and final draft should be checked for grammatical errors, spelling, and punctuation.

When you receive feedback from someone editing your essay, take each suggestion for what it is—a suggestion. The important things to remember are to keep the essay in your voice, the way you would say it, and not to let someone rewrite your essay for you.

College Essay Tips from Admissions Counselors

When you’re learning how to write a college essay, it can be helpful to hear directly from the source who will be reading your work. We talked to two Babson College Admissions Counselors: Jared Pierce, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, and Eric Laboissonniere, former Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions. Here are their top tips for college admissions essays.

• “ Keep it simple. My favorite essays have consistently been those essays that are about the seemingly most mundane and ordinary aspects of an applicant’s life—it is these topics that often showcase a student in the best light.”
• “ Don’t write what you think we want to hear, write about YOU —your passions, what excites you, life experiences that have shaped you into the young adult you’ve become.”
• “ Use the essays as an opportunity to share something about yourself that you may not already have shared in the rest of your application.”
• “ It’s all about the hook! A catchy opening line, when used properly, can do wonders for an essay, baiting the reader to hang on the edge of every sentence.”
• “Don’t restrict yourself with the traditional three- or five-paragraph essay. This is a great opportunity to express yourself creatively and take some risks. Structure your essay in the way that you feel will best tell your story!”​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
• “Choose a topic that might not be as easy to see in your application.” Maybe you have a hobby that doesn’t show up on your transcript. Your essay is the place to talk about that passion and show your authentic self.
• “Don’t stress.”

Babson College essay examples for admission

“When it comes to defining yourself, no one knows you better than yourself, so don’t be afraid. You don’t have to package yourself into an ideal student, because there isn’t one; you just have to tell them who you are.”​

Writing Prompt:  Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

“...everyone believes the world’s greatest lie.” A boy asked, “What’s the world’s greatest lie?” “It’s that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie”  –The Alchemist.

I was in Mr. Franklin’s World Literature class as he brought Paulo Coelho’s words to life. For me, there was no one point in which my life became controlled by fate. Instead I believed my life was shaped by my ethnicity and the world I grew up in. Mr. Franklin prompted me to take control of my life rather than let fate, and the world’s greatest lie, control who I am.

I had believed fate was the only thing that could explain the near impossibility of my parents falling in love. My dad from Taiwan and my mother from Korea, they traveled separately to Australia to learn English. Neither’s English was very good, but they met and found common ground speaking Japanese. A few years later, my mom was wondering what to call her next baby and “Demi” stood out, mainly because Demi has no “l,” “n,” or “f,” so it was easy for both my parents to pronounce.

Demi fits me in so many other ways too. Demi represents how my Korean and Taiwanese sides meet in the middle of the American culture in which I study. As I learned how others saw me, it seemed impossible to find a definite answer for who I am. Half did not mean one foot in two cultures; it meant each foot stepping quickly over the hot coals of each culture; I never fit in anywhere.

In Korea, I am often made aware that I am not Korean “enough.” While shopping, store clerks seem to intuitively understand I am not entirely Korean—speaking English to me or turning to my mom to answer questions I had asked. I speak fluent Korean and wondered what “gave me away” as a foreigner; looking in the mirror, I suspected my undyed black hair in a sea of trendy brown hair was the culprit. Surprisingly, once I dyed my hair, I was more accepted as Korean.

Yet, the minute I started to find my bearings in the Korean half of my life, my grasp of the other eluded me. When I returned to Taiwan where jet black hair is fashionable, people negatively viewed my lightly colored hair—leading to the surreal feeling of being treated as an outsider in my hometown. Even my fluent Mandarin was not enough to shake the assumptions of some. Demi, cutting across two cultures, left me with two seemingly incompatible halves.

Eventually, doodling helped me understand how artificial boundaries are. I saw how my creativity often went beyond borders, something instinctive inside me that resisted limitations. During my summer internship with the Bach Institute, a Taipei-based music conservatory, my ability to cross cultures through art found expression in the commemorative T-shirt I designed for performers of the Chelsea Music Festival to mark their trip to Taipei. Uniting the imagery of Taipei and New York in my design allowed me to explore how the cultural forces of Taiwan, Korea, and my American education have shaped my creative expression.​

Growing up between two borders in a world in which everyone else tried to define who I am, Demi has come to represent the whole of me; two sides that may not always be in harmony, but the tension inherent in my identity has empowered me to assert my independence. Mr. Franklin’s speech reminded me that half of life is where you come from and the other half is finding who you want to become. When Mr. Franklin finished reading, I realized that I’m the writer of my story—someone who does not believe the world’s greatest lie.

My mother was 15 years old when I was born.

My father has been in prison since my first birthday. He is not coming home.

When I was younger, I would go on the long drive with my father’s family to visit him. At first, I enjoyed the two hour long rides; they were adventures. Soon enough, however, those two hours began to feel like two years—I did not want to see him anymore. I did not want to deal with the awkwardness of pretending to be a family and ignoring the fact that he had killed another human being. He was the hero in their stories, but from my mother’s tears, I knew soon enough he was much less than the courageous hero they made him out to be.

My father’s family could not accept that I wanted to be as far away from their world of ignorance and verbal abuse as possible. I put up walls to keep them out. It seemed everyone did what they thought was best for me, but never once did they ask how I felt. Eventually, I decided I did not want to exhaust myself trying to care for my identity against their expectations. I closed myself off from the world in order to save myself from drowning in the confusion, manipulation, and emotional drama I battled every day.

Over time, this became too difficult. The mental torture of feeling lost in my own mind was worse than what awaited outside of the walls. This past September, I faced one of the tallest and widest walls: my name. For nearly 17 years, I lived with my father’s name—“Reyes.” I was Angellica Reyes. I am now Angellica Diaz. More aware of my past and the realities of my life, I chose to sever off the only connection to my father I had left, his name. I was now the “villain” of his family’s stories. Yet, I believed this action would finally release me from my walls because it would erase my past. I wanted to forget that I had wasted 17 years shutting myself away. All my life I had believed I found strength in silence and reservation. Now, I am deeply ashamed that it took me 17 years to realize vulnerability is the truest measure of our strength and character.

I regret my silence.

I understand now that a name can not fix the void I have created for myself. I know these walls will hold me for years to come, but today I acknowledge that I will always be a product of the past. What matters is I am still searching for that place that exists free from the walls. Today, I do not allow spite or hate to faze me or my visions for the world. I am grounded and balanced. From living in the shadow of ignorance I am now driven to change the lives of others, to inspire with peace and compassion. I am fighting hunger and food waste in my community, I will soon start teaching yoga classes to underprivileged children, and I hope to start a healthy lifestyle education program at my local youth center.

My confidence stems from the understanding that as an active agent, the world I envision is the world that will be. I am still breaking through a world blocked behind walls but no longer do I wait for the world to change. Every day I challenge my family’s categorization of my place in the world.

Today, I will not wait for anyone’s approval. I am not coming home.

My name is Oussama. Yes, it is pronounced Osama. Growing up with this name, especially post 9-11, was not easy. Although it’s spelled differently, the reaction produced is still the same. I will always remember the painful first days of every new school year, but I particularly recall my first day of eighth grade. I dreaded morning attendance. As the teacher moved down her roster, past the L’s and the M’s, my heart thumped furiously. With the O’s looming closer, I wanted to grow smaller. When she got to my name, she paused for what seemed like an eternity. A look of confusion crossed her face, and then her mouth writhed in a feeble attempt to say my name: Oussama Ouadani. I meekly mumbled a “here.” Shocked, all of the students swiveled in their seats to gawk at me, and a few muffled snickers arose from the edges of the class. Eyes probed my Algerian features, and I sat with cheeks ablaze, wondering what they made of me. I remember going home and crying, wishing that I had a “normal” name, or at the least, a middle name I could use. It became so unbearable that I even questioned my parents’ choice to name me Oussama. Looking back, I realize that these awkward days of school have revealed a great deal to me about human nature.

My name in Arabic means the lion, the brave. To others, I’ve found out, it may mean a whole host of things. I work at Staples, where I wear a name badge that openly states who I am. I get different reactions to it each day. Some people get nervous as a result of my nametag. They glance at it surreptitiously, and then delicately look back at me. Some people are more blatant about it and stare, shamelessly, at my nametag. Some question it, curious about its pronunciation and its roots. Some try to sympathize with the troubles my name has brought me. But then there are those, a very select few, who simply call me “Oussama.” Even though it is such a basic form of respect, it always catches me off guard. It makes me feel normal. I don’t want people to be afraid of my name, or falsely sympathize with me. I simply wish to be me.

Although my name has been an object of hardship, it has also been my greatest teacher. It has put me in positions characterized by emotions ranging from irritation to humiliation. However, I believe these situations have served as the catalyst for my growth in character, and as result, I am a more resilient person. The fact that I no longer want to change my name proves this. My name also acts as a portal through which I can empathize with others. I grasp what it means to truly respect someone, to the core, so they feel important. I appreciate what it means to feel ostracized. I know what it’s like to be shamed by others, and how it feels to reject your own name, your sole identifier, your individuality. Being laughed at has taught me not to laugh at others. Being shunned has taught me to open my arms to others. Being pitied, I’ve learned not to pity others. I try my best to consider the struggles of others, and why their actions and words may be the product of a storied past. I sympathize with the shy, the loud, and the attention seekers. It has allowed me to acknowledge that potentially everyone has a secret fear or personal struggle that I might not know about. My name is an integral component of who I am, for not only does it reflect my cultural heritage and lend me a visionary quality, but it also represents an eternal gift from my parents.

The essay is your chance to give evaluators some insight of who you are, not only as a student, but as a person.”

Christmas has always made me happy. The mountains are glossed by snow as the nearby branches hang low from the weight of the recent blizzard. The smell of fresh Maine pine trees and burning wood fill the crisp air. My family decorates the tree humming along to James Taylor’s Christmas album. But above all else, at the focal point of every Sheehan Christmas, is my favorite Christmas movie,  It’s A Wonderful Life .

The movie follows the life of George Bailey, who, after many years of selflessness runs into a financial crisis. As George begins to act out, family and friends ask God to help him through his tough times. In response, God sends an angel named Clarence to sort out the issue. George asks to see a world in which he was never born to which Clarence reluctantly obliges. In this new George-less world, George witnesses a dreary, alternative universe in which all of his family and friends lead miserable lives. Seeing this allows George to see how important his life actually is and he begs God to let him live again. The story is meant to show people what is truly meaningful in life—that, whether they realize it or not, one person’s actions can cause a positive ripple effect in the lives of so many.

To say this movie is my personal Bible is an understatement.  It’s A Wonderful Life  has been the centerpiece of many dinner conversations and family gatherings. I try to bring it up as often as possible because it gives me an appreciation for the lives of those around me. Each person’s life touches so many, and when that person isn’t around, there’s an awful hole that can’t be filled.

Certainly there are other influences in my life, but none have quite affected my definition of what it means to live well. I have the choice to be an integral part of everyone’s life. The movie particularly made me curious about people’s passions and caused me to do a lot of self-reflection. I couldn’t remember the last time I asked the people closest to me what it was that made them happiest; I couldn’t tell you their favorite things, or much about their personal lives. These were some of the most important people in my life and I couldn’t even understand why they were the way they were. There’s a difference between knowing someone on the surface and truly knowing who they are.  It’s A Wonderful Life  encouraged me to delve into the lives of those around me.

There’s a line from another great movie,  Patch Adams , that says: “Our job is to improve the quality of life, not just delay death.” The message resonates well with what  It’s A Wonderful Life  did for me. It’s easy to get caught up in our personal lives and not worry about the surrounding world. But what’s easy is not always what’s best. My biggest fear is to have the opposite effect that George Bailey had—If I were to not be a part of the world, that nobody’s life would be different. So I’ve dedicated my life to making sure that every day I seek to improve the quality of life of those around me.

Every person I’ve met, every relationship I’ve had, every hello I’ve said, my actions stem from the lessons I’ve learned in  It’s A Wonderful Life . I now realize that I can have a serious impact on the lives of those around me. I’m more curious, I’m more engaging, I’m more positive in my relationships with other people all because of a two hour and fifteen minute Christmas movie. Every year, as the snow begins to fall, as the temperature drops, as I set up my family’s nativity scene, I can’t help but feel excitement knowing that it’s time to watch  It’s A Wonderful Life  again, the movie that changed my life.
