Southeast Racing

Executive summary executive summary is a brief introduction to your business plan. it describes your business, the problem that it solves, your target market, and financial highlights.">.

Southeast Racing Parts (SRP) is a small, North Carolina-based automobile racing parts brick and mortar and mail order organization. SRP will remain small in order to offer unprecedented customer attention. Southeast Racing Parts will become the premier destination for entry level and novice racing parts.

The Market Southeast Racing Parts will be participating in an exciting, growing market. Motorsports has seen explosive growth in the USA in the last decade. It is now the fastest-growing sport in the USA. The market is worth $1.5 billion annually. A recent survey indicates that over 385,000 people have competed in organized motorsport events with even more people who have “souped” up their cars but have yet to compete in organized events. Additionally, TV coverage for motorsports has increased dramatically helping fuel growth. Lastly, the Carolinas has experienced record population growth, 25% within the last decade making SRP’s chosen location attractive.

The Organization Southeast Racing Parts is founded on the idea that maintaining satisfied customers is essential to the financial health of the organization. With this in mind, SRP will be working hard to ensure that all of their customer’s expectations are exceeded in all transactions. To maintain a presence within the racing community and close relationships to customers, Southeast Racing Parts will be an active member of the local racing scene through participation and sponsorship.

Products, Services, and Delivery SRP will be both a brick and mortar company serving the local community as well as offering a catalog with a mail order service. The catalog will be a four-color edition and subsequent editions will be analyzed to determine the cost effectiveness of publishing in this format. SRP will offer engine and chassis parts for a wide variety of cars. Safety equipment and set up equipment will also be offered. All of the popular name brands will be offered in addition to an array of generic label parts. SRP will offer coil rating services as well as scaling services for race cars.

Financials Southeast Racing Parts will be profitable from month one. Margins are forecasted to be respectable. Year one sales will be exceptional with a steady growth rate for the first five years.

Southeast Racing Parts is an exciting opportunity that combines a customer-centric organization with an explosive industry. Motorsports is becoming increasingly popular in the United States with more and more people becoming active participants. Even for those who are not true participants, it is now “cool” to have your car “tweaked out” even just for aesthetics. An investment in Southeast Racing Parts is a high growth, reasonable risk opportunity.

1.1 Objectives

  • To make Southeast Racing Parts the number one destination for the purchase of entry-level/novice racing supplies in the Carolinas.
  • To achieve a modest initial gross profit margin, increasing that by at least 1% per year until reaching our final target.
  • To sell a substantial amount of product the first year.
  • To maintain a solid growth rate per year for the first five years.

1.2 Mission

Southeast Racing Parts is dedicated to providing racing products that combine quality performance with value pricing. We wish to establish a successful partnership with our customers, our employees, and our suppliers that respects the interests and goals of each party.

Constantly striving to supply what the consumer is asking for, we will continually review what is available in the marketplace, and what isn’t. Improving on what is available and providing new products and services to the areas of need will help ensure our success in a market driven by consumer demand.

Success will ultimately be measured by our customers choosing us because of their belief in our ability to meet or exceed their expectations of price, service, and selection.

1.3 Keys to Success

To succeed in this business, we must:

  • Be an active member of the racing community; i.e., attend functions at local race tracks, attend regional and national trade shows.
  • Deliver our products promptly.
  • Work with our customers on a personal level, as opposed to the “What’s your customer number?” mentality of large mail order firms.

Company Summary company overview ) is an overview of the most important points about your company—your history, management team, location, mission statement and legal structure.">

Southeast Racing Parts is a new company, which upon commencement of operations will provide entry-level oval track racers with affordable products and quality service.

2.1 Company Ownership

Southeast Racing Parts is a North Carolina corporation, subchapter S, owned entirely by Tim and Molly Jones.

2.2 Start-up Summary

Our start-up costs are listed on the following page. Major costs include computer hardware, software and setup support; rent, a telephone system, approximately office equipment and furniture, parts shelving and other warehouse equipment, leasehold improvements, and a company pick-up truck.

The company will start out with about three months’ inventory on hand. This means the majority of company assets will consist of inventory and the starting cash balance will not be significant.

You will find that we will need additional funding. The purpose of this plan is to secure financing for that amount.

Later in this plan, when you view the Projected Balance Sheet, Projected Cash Flow and the Projected Profit and Loss, you will notice that we do not show any debt or interest expense. However, by examining these same charts, you will see that we project a sufficient amount of earnings to service a debt load.

Upon negotiations of debt amount and terms, modified charts will be provided upon request.

2.3 Company Locations and Facilities

Southeast Racing Parts will be located at 123 Main Street, Anytown, North Carolina. This location will afford us good visibility along with convenient access for traveling race teams wishing to stop at our location.

Another advantage of this location is the recent announcement of a go-kart/entertainment complex, which will be located directly across the street. This complex will attract many potential customers to our immediate vicinity.

By locating in close proximity to Charlotte, Southeast Racing Parts will enjoy a large built-in customer base. The skyrocketing popularity of NASCAR Winston Cup racing in the last 15 years has only strengthened its role as the hub for most race teams and all the related businesses they’ve spawned.

The sport’s explosion has been so boundless that University of North Carolina-Charlotte researchers conducted a study of the industry to try to determine its impact. The study, completed in December 1996, found that in its surrounding counties, NASCAR racing is responsible for about 2,000 jobs producing more than $200 million in expenditures annually — figures that many in the industry consider conservative in 1998. Many of the people employed within the industry along with their children, other relatives, and friends, take up racing as a hobby.

The Facility We will initially be leasing 3,000 sq. ft. of a new 10,000 sq. ft. building. As needs dictate, our office and/or warehouse facilities could be expanded into an additional 2,500 sq. ft.

We will be sharing this facility with another business that is also involved in racing, and their business attracts many of the local racers. In light of this, we will meet many potential customers simply because of our association with them.

This location will consist of a showroom, office space, and warehousing. All deliveries and shipments will be serviced at this location. We will also have ample parking available.

Southeast Racing Parts will sell racing products to the entry-level/novice racer. These products will include engine and chassis parts along with safety and set-up equipment. Services that we will provide include coil spring rating, along with a scaling service for race cars.

3.1 Product Description

Southeast Racing Parts will assist its customers in selecting the best parts for their application at a price that meets or exceeds their expectations. In the event of a problem, we will be there to assist and counsel the customer to a speedy solution.

We will carry or have quick access to most major lines of racing equipment. We will also carry generic “plain label” merchandise that we will market under our own performance name. Private labeling will allow us, in most cases, to greatly increase our profit margins since the procurement costs are much lower for these types of items.

Even though our target market is the entry-level racer, our product mix will be sufficient to fill most of the needs of even the most hard-core racer. With leisure time at a premium, our reputation for having needed items in-stock will save our customers both time and money. We will be open Monday through Saturday with hours yet to be determined.

Our experience has shown that most entry-level racers’ preference is for low prices. We believe we can offer products that indeed are lower in price without sacrificing the performance and safety concerns that our customers will demand. Southeast Racing Parts will provide precisely the level of service that today’s entry-level racer requires.

3.2 Competitive Comparison

Within our niche, we only have one significant competitor. They, however, do not carry engine parts, which should give us an edge in that respect.

In general, however, our competition is not in our targeted portion of the market. This competition consists mainly of these three groups:

  • NASCAR Winston Cup suppliers.
  • Asphalt late model chassis builders.
  • National mail order suppliers.

More discussion is included later in this plan on competitive businesses.

3.3 Sales Literature

To drive sales initially, Southeast Racing Parts will utilize an existing supply catalog. This four-color catalog will have a different cover with the Southeast Racing Parts logo, phone number, etc., printed on it.

After much research, we found that the product mix in this catalog most closely resembles the needs of the consumer niche that we are focusing upon. An agreement was reached to supply these catalogs to us at no charge. This precludes the need to invest in catalog production at the outset. In turn, we will be using the catalog company as a supplier for some of the inventory lines that we carry. We have developed a price sheet to be enclosed with each catalog.

We will produce flyers in-house on an as-needed basis. These will primarily be to showcase new products and/or to advertise special sales promotions. The flyers will be distributed in the same fashion as the catalogs.

Following are planned means of catalog distribution:

  • Give away in-store.
  • Enclose in mail order shipments.
  • Personally hand out at area race tracks.
  • Distribute at local trade shows and auctions.
  • Sell for $3 through local racing newspaper business card advertisements.
  • Upon the release of a new catalog, we would need to check into the financial feasibility of utilizing direct mail as a means of bulk distribution.

3.4 Sourcing

This is an area that we feel we will enjoy a distinct advantage over much of our competition. Because of our past work experience in purchasing, we have a vast number of supplier contacts within the racing industry. We have good, long-term, solid relationships with many of these vendors which, in many cases, will allow us to achieve decreased cost-of-goods and/or additional terms. Many of these suppliers have already committed to special deals for us, such as waiving their buy-in requirements, additional payment terms, sales referrals, etc.

We will purchase our inventory from both regional wholesalers and direct from the manufacturers. We will use the regional wholesalers more initially because of their ability to service us faster. This will lower our margins slightly; however, we feel that the upside will be that it will allow us to turn our inventory faster. As our sales volume increases, we will shift our buying patterns away from the wholesalers and purchase more of our inventory direct, which will result in increased profits.

3.5 Technology

All computer hardware and software systems that will be utilized by Southeast Racing Parts have been carefully and diligently evaluated. We will use off-the-shelf, PC-based software for accounting purposes including AR/AP, inventory, purchasing, sales, and returns. We will start out with three workstations and expand upon that as necessary.

Many of the computer systems used in the racing industry today are outmoded and obsolete. The major suppliers are reluctant to change because of the huge capital expense to change over their systems at one time. Hence, they keep going with the old and outdated.

By choosing this software, our training costs will be reduced tremendously. Much of the software used by competitors takes weeks to learn and master. Southeast Racing Parts’s use of this software will enable a basic, computer-literate employee to learn the system in one day.

This system will speed our order entry process, assist us in sales forecasting, and allow us to give a higher level of customer service.

3.6 Future Products

We must remain on top of new products and trends. The most important factor in developing future products is market need. Our understanding of the needs in our market niche is one of our competitive advantages.

As stated earlier, we will have our own private label brand. Not only are profit margins better than name brands, but these accessories will help build name identity and awareness for Southeast Racing Parts when they are used on the race track. As our sales volume increases, this will be an area that we can expand.

Another natural area for expansion in the future would be the implementation of a website. On-line commerce is becoming an increasingly attractive option, due to relatively low cost of operation, the global reach of the medium, and the increasing security. Our business model could quite easily expand to include a form of Internet commerce in a variety of racing equipment.

Market Analysis Summary how to do a market analysis for your business plan.">

Overall it is estimated that the total retail market for hardcore racing products is $1.5 billion annually and it still continues to grow.

The only real threat to our venture would be a similar new entry to the marketplace. This opportunity may best be described as one ready and waiting for the first entrant who arrives with a well-conceived plan, sufficient industry experience, and the required capitalization.

4.1 Market Segmentation

The racing industry is in a boom period. While there are many items from various vendors available, Southeast Racing Parts has approached the market as a specialty retailer — a provider of parts and services to the entry-level racer.

Our target customer in this segment will have a wide range of racing and automotive skills, but our most important target customers are relatively unsophisticated at racing. We will be able to serve this customer well not only by offering them parts at an affordable price, but also by giving them advice that ensures they get the task done correctly, therefore improving their on-track performance.

4.2 Target Market Segment Strategy

Our segment definition is in and of itself strategic. We are not intending to satisfy all users of racing equipment, but rather those who are just starting out and those who are struggling to keep up. We can save our customers time and money, not so much within our pricing structure, but by assessing their needs and directing them toward the proper product. Racers, by nature, tend to desire a high-end product, when often a low to mid-end product will do as good as, or sometimes even a better job. By always dealing in an honest and ethical manner, we will build customer loyalty and word-of-mouth sales that many of our competitors are lacking.

4.2.1 Market Trends

Trends are in our favor. We have identified four major trends that help us:

  • Motorsports in general, and circle track racing in particular, have experienced explosive growth in the ’90s. Most experts attribute this growth to greatly expanded television coverage of motorsports events. This coverage exposes many more potential participants to the sport. By focusing on affordable entry-level racing, we feel that Southeast Racing Parts will be filling a niche in the market.
  • This area has experienced tremendous population growth in the past decade, approximately 25%. As racing and the local population grow hand-in-hand, it should make many more potential customers available to us.
  • There are a lot of fathers dreaming their son will be the next Jeff Gordon. In fact, there are tens of thousands of serious young kart racers who have chosen this sport over baseball, football, or basketball. They’ll be the ones that fill the fields in the next decade.
  • Finally, there is the aging Baby Boomer generation. Many have discharged their duties to their children, who have grown and moved on, and now there is money and time again. They turn to something they always wanted to do, or return to the sport they loved, and they go racing.

4.2.2 Market Needs

Since our target market is the entry-level racer, the most important needs are service, price, and availability, in that order. One of the key points of our strategy is to focus on target segments that know and understand these needs and are willing for us to fulfill those needs.

4.3 Industry Analysis

With expanded television coverage and an enormous base of grassroots motorsports activity, auto racing is a thriving industry, as well as the fastest growing sport in America. As with baseball, it could be argued that auto racing has grown to such popularity because of its vital grassroots foundation. Our customers will be the Little Leagues and softball leagues of auto racing. Outsiders to the racing industry must understand that racers may be the most obsessive consumers of any industry. Because of the pressure to win, they avidly purchase new technology. In most race cars, several parts will become obsolete in the course of a season, even though they function perfectly well.

Racers are hard on their investment, too. New tires might be a weekly purchase, and several engine freshening expenditures might be called for in a season. A good whack at the outside wall, and a racing retailer has a customer or two for shocks, a-arms, fasteners, hubs, and more.

Racers spend what it takes to win; they are not out merely to enjoy the ride. Any person who has spent any time at all in the racing pit has heard the guy in front of him in the snack bar line describe how he postponed a key household expense–the telephone bill or a new household appliance–to purchase a new right rear tire, or other critical racing part.

To service this sport, there are thousands of small businesses across the country skilled in the ways of horsepower and hooking it to the ground. Whether they make their money from parts or services, retailing or building engines, these businesses make it an easy and convenient matter to go racing. Without these local ambassadors of speed, it is hard to imagine the existence of auto racing in a large scale.

4.3.1 Distribution Patterns

Generally, traditional distribution channels are followed. The products are bought from distributors and/or direct from the manufacturers, who have little say in how products are marketed. As in most industries, price levels decrease as volume increases.

4.3.2 Competition and Buying Patterns

We feel that racers understand the concept of service and availability, and are much more likely to pay for it when the offering is clearly stated.

There is no doubt that we will compete much more against the large mail order outfits than against any small local suppliers. We have good indications that racers/customers would rather pay 5-15% more for a long-term relationship with a vendor providing quality service and support. To this point, the racer thinks about price because that’s what he sees emphasized by the mail order companies.

Availability is of utmost importance. The buyer tends to want immediate, local solutions to their problems and/or needs.

By positioning ourselves at the lower end of the market, we will present ourselves to consumers just getting into racing, and we will sell to a base of customers that we can grow with together.

4.3.3 Main Competitors

  • (omitted to protect confidentiality)

The above are all targeted towards the professional (NASCAR Winston Cup, etc.) market. They carry a totally different product mix to service that market. Their prices are high, and their interest in selling to the entry-level market is basically nonexistent.

These are both late model chassis builders not targeting the entry-level market. Basically, they stock inventory that’s used just on their own cars. They are both located in the Anytown Motorsports Center business park which is in an out-of-the-way, hard to find location.

They are a large drag racing mail order firm that is skimming the circle track gravy. Since Southeast Racing Parts will cater to the circle track market, we believe that whatever local circle track customers they have will switch suppliers. We will have more knowledge and experience to suit their needs.

As implied in their name, they sell used parts, so in most cases they’re not usable for our target market. They also sell a limited amount of new parts; however, because of their name, most people are not aware of this. Also, they are located in an area which was described earlier as a poor location.

They are the only local competitor that we could identify that was targeting our niche. Following are what we feel are some of our competitive advantages: We feel that we are in a much better location. They utilize a black and white flyer as their main sales tool, and we will have a professional four-color catalog. Also, they concentrate mainly on chassis and safety equipment, where we will also offer a full array of engine parts.

4.3.4 Industry Participants

We are part of the Performance Racing Industry, which includes several kinds of businesses.

Speed Shops : Most of these are small, sometimes part-time ventures run from the individual’s home. Sometimes they will service a local race track; however, they usually carry a very minimal amount of inventory, and are usually operated by a racer or an ex-racer depending solely upon a small circle of friends or acquaintances as customers. They normally are short on business and marketing skills.

Engine & Chassis Builders : Typically these are well-respected firms supplying engines and chassis to the racing industry. Their customer profile lies in the mid to upper end of the market. They offer superb technical support; however, it is only available to customers utilizing their engine or chassis. They stock parts to service their engine or chassis, but are usually limited in areas areas beyond that. Normally their pricing structure is slightly above average.

Mail Order : The racing industry is served increasingly by large mail order firms that offer aggressive pricing on racing components. They are usually impersonal, and have little or no technical support available. For the purely price-driven buyer who purchases parts and expects no support, these firms offer a good option.

Others : There are many other channels through which people buy their racing parts, usually variations of the main three types above.

Strategy and Implementation Summary

Our strategy is based on serving the niche of entry-level racers well. This area is full of small race teams that can’t get products or services from the major vendors who focus only on professional race teams. Also:

  • What begins as a customized version of a standard product, tailored to the needs of local racers, can eventually become a niche product that will fill the needs of similar racers across the country.
  • We are planning our marketing strategy so that we can eventually reach specific kinds of racers across broad geographic lines.
  • We focus on satisfying the needs of entry-level race teams.
  • We focus on follow-on technology that we can take to the masses, as opposed to leading edge technology that aims at the professional race teams.

5.1 Marketing Strategy

The retail marketing strategy of Southeast Racing Parts centers on creating a corporate identity that clearly defines our market niche in terms that benefit our customer. Other specific strategies that will be used follow:

  • Print Ads – Keeping the Southeast Racing Parts name in front of the customer while getting established will be necessary. We plan on running limited space ads in the local racing newspapers to keep our name and phone number in front of the consumer. We may attempt to showcase a single product in an effort to return revenue from the ad. Our past experience has been that showing measurable revenue from these types of ads is difficult. In the future we plan on utilizing Stock Car Racing magazine and Circle Track magazine (both national magazines) as a method of increasing our sales revenue.
  • Press Releases – The local racing papers: The Racing News, Late Model Digest, Dirt Late Model Digest, and The Pit List have offered to run releases and/or stories concerning the opening of Southeast Racing Parts. Stock Car Racing magazine has also extended us the same offer. We will also use the above media to run new product releases.
  • Race Car Sponsorship – Entry-level racers can be persuaded into running the Southeast Racing Parts logo on their race car in exchange for a token discount on purchases and/or for receiving technical support.
  • Decals – We will have decals manufactured with the Southeast Racing Parts logo. We will include the decals with all of the orders that we ship. Entry-level racers in particular enjoy displaying decals on their race cars, haulers, tool boxes, etc.
  • Apparel – We know several people in the area who produce NASCAR apparel. A line of premium Southeast Racing Parts apparel could be designed and produced in very short runs to reduce inventory costs. These can be sold or given away with qualifying purchases to further expose the Southeast Racing Parts name.
  • Grand Opening – A Grand Opening is the most successful of any in-store promotions. With manufacturer support, a large number of door prizes can be given away while instantly building a mailing list. Loss leader pricing on a few high volume consumable products will attract in-store traffic. Vendors will subsidize loss leader pricing with a rebate or kickback. Appearances by local racing celebrities would also expose potential customers to Southeast Racing Parts.
  • Trade Shows – We will exhibit at approximately four local trade shows annually. Revenue that we produce at the shows will outweigh our expenses for attending.
  • Word of Mouth – By giving first-time customers great service and a fair price, the word is sure to spread. Also, the many industry and racer contacts that we already have in the area will prove to be most beneficial in spreading the word.

All marketing decisions with regard to specific media choices, frequency, size, and expenditures will be conducted on an on-going basis with careful considerations of returns generated.

5.1.1 Promotion Strategy

Our most important vehicle for sales promotion will be our catalog, which is discussed earlier in this plan.

5.1.2 Distribution Strategy

Our customers will buy our products at our location. However, we anticipate a significant amount of mail order sales in order to meet or exceed our Sales Forecast. We will receive orders by mail, phone, or fax, process them immediately, and ship the goods via United Parcel Service.

In the event we are out of an item or we don’t stock it, many of our vendors have offered drop shipping as a service to us. This will allow us to keep our service at a high level, yet let us keep our inventory levels in check.

In the future, electronic commerce with a secure website will be thoroughly investigated for feasibility.

5.1.3 Pricing Strategy

Our customers are especially sensitive to value. We must ensure that our price and service are perceived to be a good value to the racers. However, in the nearly thirty years of experience that we have accumulated in the racing industry, one message rings true: someone can always beat you on price.

Therefore, our pricing strategy is to be competitive within the various product categories, but not to rely on the selling price to overshadow the other advantages of doing business with our company. We will sell ourselves on the basis of a diverse line of quality products, that are readily available, reasonably priced, and backed up by our extraordinary customer service. The products will be checked prior to shipment and all promised shipping dates will be met.

We will strive for a modest gross profit margin, increasing that steadily by year four.

5.2 Sales Strategy

Because Southeast Racing Parts is a new entity, we understand that we will have to prove our company’s worth to racers in order to earn their respect and business.

Most importantly, we need to sell our company, not necessarily the products. We will need to push our service and support capabilities.

5.2.1 Sales Forecast

The following table and related charts show our present sales forecast. We are projecting sales to grow at steadily for the next three years.

Our seasonality, as shown in the chart, is a factor in the racing industry. We will tend to sell much better in the period January through June, while sales trail off in late summer and fall.

Management feels these forecasts are highly attainable.

When Performance Racing Industry completed its annual survey, the resulting figure for total number of racers was 385,000. Within the survey they also found that 150,000 of those were oval track racers. The survey also showed $1.5 billion in annual retail sales for all segments, with 48% of that total ($720 million) derived from the oval track segment.

By dividing that number ($720 million) by the number of oval track racers (150,000), the average annual retail purchases of oval track racers equals $4,800. From our past experience, we believe that each customer we have would spend on average 25% of that figure ($1,200) with our company. Finally, by dividing our first year sales forecast ($350,000) by $1,200 (average annual customer purchases), it shows that we will need 292 customers to support the sales forecast numbers. We believe, by and large, that these are realistic and attainable numbers.

5.3 Strategic Alliances

We have the ability to build strong strategic alliances with many of our suppliers, some of which are listed below.

  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will set us up as a Warehouse Distributor (W.D.) without the buy-in requirement.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will do “whatever they can” to help us succeed. Possibly supply us with a show car to display in our showroom.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will set us up as a W.D. without the buy-in requirement.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will set us up as a W.D. and could also be persuaded into extending us special terms.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will set us up as a W.D. and help out as needed with additional terms.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They have set us up as a dealer and will drop ship when needed.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will work with us by drop shipping direct to our customers and also by acting as a “paper” warehouse so that we may order direct from the manufacturer for a nominal billing fee.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). Could be persuaded into giving us extended dating on our initial stocking order.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will supply us with used testing equipment at no charge. They have indicated that they would also extend special terms and/or dating on initial stocking order.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will supply us with their 94-page 4-color catalog at no charge.
  • (omitted to protect confidentiality). They will set us up as a direct W.D. without the buy-in requirement. Will also assist us in marketing their products in this area.

The following two local warehouses will help us immensely in keeping our own inventory levels in check, while still giving our customers fast service:

  • (omitted to protect confidentiality).

Approached properly, these vendors and many others will assist Southeast Racing Parts in becoming a force in the marketplace.

5.4 Milestones

Sample Milestones topic text.

The milestones table and chart show the specific detail about actual program activities that should be taking place during the year. Each one has its manager, starting date, ending date, and budget. During the year we will be keeping track of implementation against plan, with reports on the timely completion of these activities as planned.

Management Summary management summary will include information about who's on your team and why they're the right people for the job, as well as your future hiring plans.">

We are a small company owned and operated by Tim and Molly Jones, husband and wife, as a Subchapter S corporation.

Tim Jones – President Tim will be the main salesperson. He will also be responsible for shipping and receiving, inventory management, and the marketing and promotion of products. Tim will assist with record keeping and cost containment.

Molly Jones – Corporate Secretary Molly will maintain the company records and be in direct communication with the accountant and other advisors. She will also be in charge of the computer system and perform all of the desktop publishing for the company. She will assist as needed with sales, shipping and receiving, and customer service related issues. In addition to her regular duties, Molly will be doing Internet marketing from her office at Southeast Racing Parts. We anticipate that 20 hours every week will be dedicated to this marketing. The revenue that will be generated by this is reflected in the Sales Forecast.

The initial management team depends on the founders themselves, with little back-up. We plan on hiring additional personnel as the need for them arises, and as we have the ability to pay them.

6.1 Management Team

Tim and Molly not only have the desire to succeed, but will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Southeast Racing Parts team. They have nearly thirty years of combined experience in the racing industry and have both performed nearly all facets of daily operations for a racing business. Following is a synopsis of their abilities and accomplishments:

Tim Jones (40) – President (background omitted to protect confidentiality)

Molly Jones (29) – Corporate Secretary (background omitted to protect confidentiality)

6.2 Management Team Gaps

We depend on professionals, particularly our CPA, for some key management help. We have retained a local CPA to help us with financial and business management questions since we don’t have a strong background in those areas. Also, we are short on experience concerning human resource issues; however, we plan on utilizing our network of business associates to advise us when the need arises.

6.3 Personnel Plan

The cornerstone of the personnel plan is to maximize productivity and minimize the labor burden on the company’s operating expenses. As we grow, we expect to see steady increases in our personnel to match the increases in sales.

2. Products & Services Offered by Your Auto Parts Business.

The next step is to outline your products and services for your auto parts business.

When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my business?
  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?
  • Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.

If you don't have a marketing plan for your auto parts business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

A good marketing plan for your auto parts business includes the following elements:

Target market

  • Who is your target market?
  • What do these customers have in common?
  • How many of them are there?
  • How can you best reach them with your message or product?

Customer base

  • Who are your current customers?
  • Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
  • How can their experience with your auto parts business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

Product or service description

  • How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
  • Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
  • Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
  • How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

Competitive analysis

  • Which companies are competing with yours today (and why)?
  • Which ones may enter into competition with yours tomorrow if they find out about it now through word-of-mouth advertising; social media networks; friends' recommendations; etc.)
  • What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

Marketing channels

  • Which marketing channel do you intend to leverage to attract new customers?
  • What is your estimated marketing budget needed?
  • What is the projected cost to acquire a new customer?
  • How many of your customers do you instead will return?

Form an LLC in your state!

4. Write Your Operational Plan.

Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step
  • Milestones & KPIs
  • Location of your business
  • Zoning & permits required for the business

What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a auto parts business?

  • Computer or laptop
  • Inventory management software
  • Secure storage for inventory and parts
  • Phone system with multiple lines
  • High-speed internet connection
  • Printer and printer supplies
  • Receipts and invoices for transactions
  • Business license from the relevant state and local authorities
  • Permits to stock, sell and distribute auto parts, if applicable

5. Management & Organization of Your Auto Parts Business.

The second part of your auto parts business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your auto parts business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Auto Parts Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a auto parts business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a auto parts business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your auto parts business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your auto parts business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your auto parts business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
  • Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.

IBIS World projected that the Auto Parts Stores industry is expected to grow slowly over the five years to 2016. They stated that per capita disposable income and corporate profit boosted the demand for auto parts. Furthermore, favorable car usage trends have led to growth in demand for industry products in the short term.

Nevertheless, advancements in motor vehicle technology have made it increasingly difficult for vehicle owners to repair and maintain vehicles without professional help. Going forward, the revenue generated by operators in the industry is expected to grow at the same pace as the previous period.

We are quite aware that there are several auto parts retail stores all over Charleston and even in the same location where we intend locating ours, which is why we are following the due process of establishing a business.

We know that if a proper SWOT analysis is conducted for our business, we will be able to position our business to maximize our strength, leverage on the opportunities that will be available to us, mitigate our risks and be welled equipped to confront our threats.

Freeway Auto Parts Stores®, LLC employed the services of an expert HR and Business Analyst with bias in retailing to help us conduct a thorough SWOT analysis and to help us create a Business model that will help us achieve our business goals and objectives. This is the summary of the SWOT analysis that was conducted for Freeway Auto Parts Stores®, LLC;

Our location, the business model we will be operating on both (physical store and online store), varieties of payment options, wide range of auto parts from different manufacturing brands both from the United States and abroad and our excellent customer service culture will definitely count as a strong strength for Freeway Auto Parts Stores®, LLC. So also, our team of highly qualify staff members is also a plus for the business.

A major weakness that may count against us is the fact that we are a new auto parts retail store outlet in Charleston – South Carolina and we don’t have the financial capacity to compete with multi – million dollars’ auto parts retail store outlets like Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone Inc., Genuine Parts Company, O’Reilly Automotive Inc and co when it comes to retailing at a rock bottom prices for all their auto parts.

  • Opportunities:

The fact that we are going to be operating our auto parts retail store close to one of the largest residential estates in Charleston – South Carolina provides us with unlimited opportunities to sell our auto parts to a large number of individuals, auto repair, services and maintenance garages and transport companies.

We have been able to conduct thorough feasibility studies and market survey and we know what our potential clients will be looking for when they visit our auto parts store outlets; we are well positioned to take on the opportunities that will come our way.

Just like any other business, one of the major threats that we may face is economic downturn. It is a reality that  economic downturn affects purchasing / spending power. Another threat that may likely confront us is the arrival of a new auto parts retail outlet in same location where ours is located. So also, unfavorable government policies may also pose a threat for businesses such as ours.

  • Market Trends

If you are conversant with the Auto Parts Stores Industry, you will quite agree that the changes in disposable income, consumer sentiment, and ever changing trends are major growth drivers for sales in this industry. No doubt, a massive rise in consumer confidence has also contributed in helping the industry experience remarkable growth, but uneven performance in these drivers has led to slightly constrained revenue growth for the industry.

So also, the rising demand for parts manufactured by a third-party manufacturing company, as a result of increasing disposable income and consumer sentiment, will result in revenue growth, but profit margins will stagnate as auto retail stores keep prices low to attract more sales amid growing competition.

Lastly, in recent time, the auto parts retail stores landscape has seen tremendous changes in the last 20 years; it has grown from the smaller outlets to a more organized and far reaching venture. Next, you will need to determine the specific licenses and permits that are required to operate your business legally. These may include general business licenses, manufacturing permits, import/export licenses, and any other industry-specific certifications that are necessary to ensure compliance.

Starting a used auto parts business can be an excellent way to make money and prevent older car parts ending up in landfills. In addition to helping the environment, you can assist people who cannot afford brand-new car parts to keep their cars in working condition.

Planning for Your Used Auto Parts Business

Step 1 Know your market.

  • Do an internet search, look in the local phone book, and pay close attention to advertisements on local television to identify similar businesses in your area.
  • Account for the size and population of your city and compare that to the geographic location of existing used auto parts businesses.
  • Used auto parts businesses are more likely to thrive in lower income areas, as wealthier segments of the society generally don't buy used auto parts as often.

Step 2 Develop a business...

  • Your specialty areas may be in imports, exports, motors, or bodywork. Do some research to determine what area can work for your business.
  • A used auto parts business can be particularly lucrative if you provide rare or hard to find parts for more obscure vehicles. [1] X Research source
  • In your business plan, be sure to account for all costs and expenditures related to the business, project realistic sales goals, design a plan to reach new customers, identify potential demographic segments of the community who will utilize your services, and plan for the growth potential of your business. Be sure outline where and how you expect to generate the necessary capital to get your business off the ground and to ensure that you can expand when needed. [2] X Research source

Step 3 Obtain the necessary paperwork.

  • Most states require a license for businesses that buy, restore, recycle, and resell used car parts.

Step 4 Find a suitable location.

  • You will need a location that is big enough to house and properly catalog a variety of used parts for all the makes and models of cars you cater to. [5] X Research source
  • Hire employees. If you are looking to open a used auto parts business, chances are that you have at least rudimentary knowledge about cars and how they work. However, you will likely need a licensed mechanic in your business to help refurbish old parts and identify parts that have potential resale value. Posting an add in local newspapers or on job search websites can help you find potential candidates for employment.

Step 5 Identify supply sources.

  • Identifying the parts you need and where to find them depends largely on your business plan. Your business may choose to focus on providing parts for rare vehicles not in production anymore, as these will be in high demand among a small segment of the population. Alternatively, you may choose to specialize in providing parts for very common vehicles in an effort to expand your potential sales base.
  • Try finding these parts in junkyards, from cars sold at salvage auctions, or contact insurance agencies to try to purchase "scrapped" cars from them at a discounted price.
  • As a used auto parts business owner, you will need to educate yourself on the mechanics of how a car operates in order to find the right parts. Also, be prepared to test the parts you find to know if they are still operational or can be refurbished to become operational again.

Running Your Used Auto Parts Business

Step 1 Connect with existing businesses.

  • Insurance companies may be willing to sell you parts of a vehicle to recoup some of their money, especially when selling the entire vehicle is not a practical option.

Step 2 Buy “scrap” vehicles.

  • Offer to take the old parts from your customers who purchase their used parts from you. You may be able to salvage car parts, refurbish them for a low cost, and place them back on your shelf.
  • You could also consider offering a discount to customers who bring “trade-in” parts to your business.
  • Consider selling online. When you deal with very specific parts for specific vehicles, you may find that no one in your immediate area will need the parts you are offering. As a result, it is wise to consider listing your inventory online to reach a much wider customer base. If you do choose to sell parts online, you need to account for the cost of packaging, shipping and handling in your prices and business model.

Step 5 Manage and monitor your inventory.

  • Paying employees and staff (if necessary) [6] X Research source
  • Paying rent or mortgage on your business' property [7] X Research source
  • Paying bills, like electric, water, and gas, that are necessary to your business' operations [8] X Research source
  • Paying property taxes and insurance [9] X Research source

Starting Auto Spare Parts Store Business Plan (PDF)

auto spare parts store business plan

Starting an auto spare parts store business presents an exciting and profitable venture in today’s dynamic market. As the automotive industry continues to flourish, the demand for quality spare parts has skyrocketed, creating a lucrative opportunity for entrepreneurs. This business not only promises substantial profit margins but also offers a steady stream of revenue, thanks to the ever-growing number of vehicles on the road. With cars becoming a necessity for many, the need for maintenance and replacement parts becomes inevitable, positioning auto spare parts stores as a pivotal component of the automotive ecosystem. The allure of this business lies in its resilience and the constant demand. Unlike other industries that might experience seasonal fluctuations, the auto spare parts sector remains relatively stable, driven by the continuous need for vehicle repairs and maintenance. This stability is a significant draw for business owners looking for a dependable and profitable venture.

At least 18 percent of the global population own at least one vehicle. That translates to over 1.4 billion vehicles in the world. That is a staggering number of vehicles and the figure keeps growing. Vehicles constitute several electrical and mechanical aspects. That is why they are always likely to malfunction or get worn out over time. The average vehicle has approximately 30 000 parts. If we are to look at substantially big parts or components, that is roughly 1800 parts. Vehicle ownership has been on the rise and will continue to be; even multiple vehicle ownership. The other notable dynamic is that vehicle owners are generally now keeping their vehicles for longer. As such that increases the likelihood of them needing auto spare parts at some point. That clearly shows you there is money to be made in starting an auto spare parts store business. Despite whatever the state of the economy might be in, the demand for auto spare parts will always be high. This article will outline how to start the auto spare parts store business, and the auto spare parts business plan – PDF, Word and Excel.

Market Research

The need to gather comprehensive up-to-date data.

Market research for auto spare parts business is basically 3-tier i.e. market identification, product research, and consumer research. You can conduct market research by conducting surveys, observations, interviews, and desk research. Desk research involves gathering and analysing information from print and electronic media. The reason why you must conduct market research for motor spares business is to figure out whether or not a market exists. Then if it does you would want to comprehensively know all its characteristics.

Several Variables To Consider

There are numerous different types of vehicles, brands, and makes. The most populated segment is light motor vehicles. However, that might not hold true everywhere. Thus you have to zone in on your intended target market and know its characteristics. All these are examples of variables that call upon you to conduct market research. What are the most sought after auto spare parts and for which types of vehicles?

Figuring Out The Roll Out Plan

You also have to gather enough information to know how to roll out your auto spare parts store business. Do you have to operate from a physical outlet? Should that physical outlet exclusively just focus on auto spare parts? Do you have to marry the auto spare parts element with an already existing business e.g. a fuel station, a garage, or workshop?

Maybe it could be best to consider franchising. How about rolling out the motor spares business exclusively using an online store approach? You have to know where you will score as many customers as possible. Making a decision out of all those options can only be accurate if your market research is thorough.

Make sure you have a comprehensive auto spare parts business plan

The failure to plan is the beginning of business failure. The auto parts business plan must be clear and succinct enough to give your potential partners, clients and investors an overview of what your objectives are. At the same time, it must be detailed enough to explain your business well. Your motor spares business plan should have financial statements which show that your business is viable and profitable.

Location And Premises for an Auto Parts Store

Your choice of location is of critical importance with respect to customer inflows. An appropriate location must take into account places where there are good road networks and high vehicle traffic. Your choice must also be done after being absolutely sure that your target area has people with substantial income levels. It would also be wise to scout your intended location and see whether or not there are other players active in the same trade. Once you get comprehensive details on that it’ll help you setup shop in a way that wards off competition.

As can be noticed from some central business districts, such stores can be located in streets lined up with auto spare parts shops. That can be strategic in that you get easily located due to people’s knowledge of the street. However, considering that you’ll be close to your competitors you’ll have to be very competitive. Deciding to locate yourself as a standalone shop can be expedient but do your homework to ensure customer inflows will be easy to mobilize. In general, the best location is in a central business district, shopping centres, or near places or residential areas that have high vehicle populations. The store must be sufficiently spacious with spare parts stacked neatly on clearly labelled rakes or sections. There must also be ample and secure parking space with even a loading bay where applicable. The auto spare parts store business plan should cater for the costs of purchasing or leasing the premises.

Competitive Analysis

Your auto spare parts store business cannot operate in a vacuum. There are competitors and you must study them closely. What are their business offerings? What is the nature of their customers and where are they from? Generally how are they running their auto spare parts store businesses? You are looking at all these and more to find out loopholes or gaps. The auto spare parts store business is extremely competitive. Your success can only be borne out of having superior differentiators. It will take conducting an in-depth competitive analysis to figure them out. The auto spare parts store business is highly segmented. Most players are not diligent enough in studying and finding out the finer details of their intended target markets. Take time to dig into that and you will discover how to set apart your auto spare parts store business.

Permits/Licenses, Insurance & Business Bank Account

Your business entity i.e. your auto spare parts business must be registered first and foremost. If you are going to be operating using a physical auto spares store, a store license will be needed. The requirements vary depending on your specific location. Mostly you can seek guidance on that from the local authorities of your respective location. There may be special permits or licenses that may be required depending on the nature of your services. It is possible that you might be dealing with auto spare parts, substances, machinery, or processes that require special licensing.

It could also be that some of your personnel may be required to be licensed for their respective trades. You have to see to it that you are not found wanting by operating without proper permits or licensing. Insurance is a no-brainer in running an auto spare parts business. There is an array of possible risks which need to be covered by insurance. As always it is smart to separate yourself from your business in terms of financial management. That is why you must open a business bank account solely for your auto spare parts store business. The costs of insurances and licenses must be included in your motor spares business plan.

Auto Spare Parts Products

Your product range will be hugely based on your targeted market. There auto spare parts market is huge and there several niches which your auto parts business can target. Your motor spares parts can specialize with selling auto parts for only one vehicle make eg Mercedes-Benz, Audi etc. Specialisation can also be according to product lines, eg gearboxes, suspension parts, engines, cooling systems, braking system, tyres etc. Focus can also be made to sell quick replacement auto spare parts eg brake pads, brake shoes, high pressure pumps, filters etc.  Other auto spare parts stores act like one-stop stores which sell a variety of products without specialising in anything.

The types of auto spare parts products you can sell are many and diverse. Some of them are bumpers, radiators, filters, batteries, plugs, fenders, ball joints, shock absorbers, body parts, bearings, plugs, lamps and lights (i.e. headlamps, corner lamps, tail lights and so on), sensors, rims, grills, lubricants, amongst others. It’s important to source your stock from reputable suppliers and at favourable prices so as to subsequently price them competitively at a profit. Your auto parts store business plan should obviously cater for the costs of purchasing the products which your store will be selling. You can source your auto spare parts from local and international suppliers.

Inventory Management

Effective inventory management is pivotal for the success of an auto spare parts store, as it ensures the right parts are available when needed without overstocking or facing shortages. First and foremost, understanding market demand is crucial; you should analyze which auto parts are most needed based on local vehicle types and seasonal trends. Implementing a reliable inventory system, such as real-time tracking software, is essential for monitoring stock levels, forecasting future demands, and identifying sales trends. This system should be complemented by regular inventory audits to verify physical stock against system records, thereby preventing discrepancies and theft. Organizing inventory into easily accessible categories based on part type, vehicle make, or sale frequency is also vital for efficient operation and customer satisfaction. It’s equally important to establish strong supplier relationships for a consistent supply chain, which can also aid in negotiating better prices and terms.

Adopting advanced inventory practices like Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory can further optimize stock levels, minimizing the cost of holding large quantities of inventory. This approach, coupled with offering special orders for less common parts, helps in managing space efficiently and reducing the risk of unsellable stock. Investment in employee training is essential, ensuring that staff members are proficient in using inventory systems and understand the importance of accurate stock keeping. Embracing technological advancements, such as barcode scanners, RFID tags, and cloud-based inventory systems, can significantly streamline inventory processes and improve overall efficiency. Constant monitoring and adjustment of inventory management strategies are imperative to align with evolving market trends, customer needs, and business growth.

Budgeting and Financial Planning

Budgeting and financial planning are integral components when embarking on the journey of starting an auto spare parts store business. To ensure the long-term success of your venture, it is imperative to carefully consider various financial aspects. First and foremost, assess your initial investment requirements, encompassing expenses like leasing or purchasing a suitable retail space, store setup, inventory acquisition, and legal fees. Crafting a comprehensive budget that delineates your startup costs is essential in understanding your financial footing from the outset.

Once your business is up and running, meticulous management of ongoing operating expenses is paramount. This includes accounting for monthly expenditures like rent or mortgage payments, utilities, employee salaries, and marketing costs. Simultaneously, managing your inventory efficiently is critical in this line of business. Implementing robust inventory tracking systems and setting reorder points will help you strike the right balance between having enough stock to meet customer demands without overstocking or risking shortages of essential parts. A well-thought-out pricing strategy, based on factors such as cost of goods, competition, and perceived value, should be developed and regularly reviewed to maintain competitiveness and profit margins.

Moreover, financial forecasting plays a pivotal role in your business’s success. Begin by creating a sales forecast, supported by market research and historical data, enabling you to set realistic revenue goals. To complement this, financial projections spanning the initial years of operation, including income statements, cash flow statements, and balance sheets, should be developed. These projections not only provide insights into your business’s financial health but also facilitate the identification of potential cash flow issues. Additionally, incorporating contingency planning and exploring various financing options, while remaining cautious about overburdening the business with debt, are essential steps. Collaborate with a tax advisor to ensure you are compliant with tax obligations and make the most of industry-specific deductions or credits. Regular financial reviews, comparing performance against your budget and projections, will help refine your strategies and ensure the continued prosperity of your auto spare parts store business.

Staff And Management

This will be depend on the size or scale of your auto parts business operations. At the minimum you need cashiers and store attendants. I can’t overemphasise the importance of having staff that’s well acquainted with auto spare parts and the technical details thereof. Hiring either qualified personnel with the necessary expertise or employees wielding a comprehensive background regarding vehicle repairs and maintenance will be strategic. The staff must also be passionate about engaging with customers, and be good at offering quality customer service and care. Size of management also depends on the size of the business, for small auto spare store businesses, this can just be the business owner. The salaries of all the staff should be budgeted for in the auto spare parts business plan.

Market for Auto Spare Parts Store Business

In the world of auto spare parts retail, recognizing and comprehending your potential customers is an essential aspect of building a thriving business. Consider automotive enthusiasts and do-it-yourself mechanics. These individuals are on the lookout for high-quality parts, accessories, and tools to maintain or enhance their vehicles. Your store’s success can hinge on providing a comprehensive range of products and expert advice tailored to their needs. Professional mechanics and auto repair shops represent another lucrative customer segment. They require a consistent and dependable source of spare parts for their daily operations. By offering competitive pricing, timely delivery, and exceptional customer service, you can establish lasting relationships with this critical demographic. Fleet managers, overseeing businesses with vehicle fleets like delivery services or taxi companies, present an opportunity for bulk purchasing options and tailored service agreements.

Additionally, don’t overlook the potential of car dealerships in need of spare parts for vehicle maintenance and repair. Forge partnerships with local dealerships by offering attractive pricing and efficient order processing. In the digital age, a significant portion of customers prefer online shopping. To capture this market segment, it’s crucial to create a user-friendly e-commerce website with easy navigation, secure payment processing, and efficient shipping options. Vintage car enthusiasts are another specialized group, often seeking rare and hard-to-find parts for their beloved classics. Providing expertise in sourcing and stocking unique components can win the loyalty of this passionate customer base.

Local car owners seeking parts for routine maintenance or minor repairs represent a valuable demographic within your community. Building a strong local presence through advertising and word-of-mouth can effectively reach and engage this group. Off-road and specialty vehicle owners, including motorcycle enthusiasts, require specialized parts and accessories. Tailor your offerings and knowledge base to cater to the distinct needs of these niche areas. For a consistent stream of business, consider pursuing contracts or partnerships with government agencies, municipalities, and public transportation services, as they frequently require spare parts for their vehicle fleets. Businesses in the agricultural and industrial sectors rely on vehicles and machinery that demand spare parts. Targeting these sectors with relevant products and specialized services can unlock additional revenue streams.

Marketing Plan

Study your competitors’ pricing strategies and find the equilibrium that allows you to remain competitive while preserving healthy profit margins. Regularly reviewing and adjusting your pricing according to market fluctuations is essential for sustained profitability. Exceptional customer service can make or break your business. Establish strong customer relationships by offering expert advice, timely assistance, and a seamless shopping experience. Managing operating costs effectively is paramount, with regular reviews to identify areas for cost reduction while maintaining quality and service standards. Expanding your product range beyond spare parts, offering related products or services, can diversify revenue streams. Continuous improvement is a constant endeavor, with feedback from customers and employees serving as valuable inputs. Stay abreast of industry trends and leverage technology to remain competitive and profitable. Is a solid business plan important?

As an entrepreneur you must need to have a solid business plan if you wish to learn how to start an automobile parts business. Having a meticulously drafted action plan ensures to meet the goals. We might be able to help you with that if you’re interested.

How do you start a business selling automobile spare parts?

A business can be started in a variety of ways depending on your investment capacity, just like any other business. As, to be successful in a business, continuous dedication and effort are required. Also, the trick is to never attempt to start your business as a part-timer. Having developed an automobile business plan is the next step to figuring out how to start an automobile spare parts business. After deciding what type of business you want to start. By developing the business plan, you can keep track of all the essential details related to the business that you need to consider. There are a few basic details that should be included in your automobile spare parts business plan:

Market Research and Understanding the Industry:

To understand the market conditions and opportunities, you must conduct a market feasibility study first. Although there is no specific educational requirement for this, still you will need to have some knowledge about the industry. You must have a clear understanding of the specifications of the different spare parts, as you might need to advise your customers about what to buy and whatnot. These all demand specific knowledge about the spare parts industry. Doing good market research and understanding the industry is the most important aspect you must consider before commencing any business.

Moreover, this will assist you in understanding the competition from other operators. Also, it will enable you to develop winning strategies that will help you get break-even within a few months of starting a business. Furthermore, you can identify the most popular spare part brands in your local market. Moreover, you will also need to identify the different models of bikes and cars that are common in the city. For all this, working with other established owners might enhance your trade knowledge.

Planning and Calculating the Cost

For a successful automobile spare parts business, you need to create a detailed business plan. Which will be defining the goal and the path of reaching there. This will serve as a blueprint but most importantly, it will help in securing the startup. Your business plan should include information about your operations and marketing plans. If you have any specialties, mention them and how you plan to open and maintain your business. How you will obtain your car parts, and how you will price them to earn a profit.

The marketing part should include information about your target audience and your local competition. As well as how you intend to reach your target audience. You must calculate startup capital after receiving knowledge and finalizing the business model. In general, you have to consider the rent of the retail space, store setup costs, and purchasing the spare parts from the wholesaler or manufacturer. It is also important to calculate and keep track of operating expenses. It will help you in calculating the breakeven and expected ROI of your business. As an alternative, you can hire a professional to assist you in making this plan.

Starting up

  • Paper Work : Licensing and Registration might vary from state to state and country to country. You can register your company either as a limited liability company or a sole proprietorship business. Checking up the registration and licensing issues of your state is the first thing you need to do. To start an automobile spare parts business in Bangladesh, trade license and tax identification numbers along with other local requirements. If you follow zoning requirements, you’ll get all the necessary paperwork that you need. Also, there may be a value-added tax on some of your inventory. As the paper works are essential, you can’t start your business without them. But, there is another option that you can talk to your lawyer if you’re not familiar with the terms.
  • Supply Sources of Spare Parts: The parts you need and where to find them depend largely on your business plan. You might decide, for instance, to stock new parts or old parts only. However, make sure clients know exactly what they are buying and give them full disclosure, this will help you to achieve their trust and long-time clients. For this, all you need to do is explain how used and new parts differ in price, merits, and demerits.

China for new parts and junkyards for used ones are the best sources of spare parts. If you approach the manufacturers of spare parts, they will welcome you as new distributors and wholesalers. Another source of used parts is purchasing used vehicles and scrapping.

  • Having a Retail or Online Store: The most traditional and profitable way of starting this business is through a retail store. You can, however, open an online automobile parts store if you don’t want to run a brick-and-mortar store and at first, want low startup capital investment. To open a retail store, you will need to find retail space that is in a good location. From that retail counter, you will sell spare parts to your customers. Additionally, this business model can be run and operated from home for both retail and online stores.
  • Store with Workshop and Franchise: Entrepreneurs have another lucrative opportunity here. In an auto spare parts store with a workshop, customers can buy parts and repair them. It does require some experience, though. It is better to start your business as a franchisee if you have no prior experience in the automobile industry. Furthermore, you can consider spare parts distribution, dealerships, and franchises. These are both cash-intensive businesses. Both can be initiated with significant capital investment and strategic planning.
  • Hire the right manpower. In any startup business, the initial employees play a crucial role in its success. Also, if you plan to open the store with a workshop, you might need to hire a freelance automobile engineer.
  • Promoting business: It requires a lot of promotion and advertising in the beginning. In addition, the success of this type of niche business is high dependence on B2B networking. It is imperative to network with other businesses in the field. For instance, automobile workshops buy spare parts in bulk frequently. Considering offering a discount to them might help you better to create an impact.

Also, think about selling online. The internet audience is too important to ignore in today’s digital world. Your own online store or an online marketplace can be used to sell auto spare parts.

What’s the key to growing the automobile spare parts business?

Providing quality spare parts is the key to growing the business. Though quality automobile spare parts are more expensive, they are more durable, so they are a better alternative to cheap parts of low quality. The reason is that it’s hard to find and attract premium prices. Moreover, it requires the constant replacement of high-volume parts. Yet, choosing quality over quantity will be a wise decision.

Apart from the above steps relating to starting an automobile spare parts business, other things might help you. Such as offering wholesale/retail both, building an Inventory of spare parts, offering delivery services, obtaining insurance, etc.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Takes Action to Protect American Workers and Businesses from China’s Unfair Trade   Practices

President Biden’s economic plan is supporting investments and creating good jobs in key sectors that are vital for America’s economic future and national security. China’s unfair trade practices concerning technology transfer, intellectual property, and innovation are threatening American businesses and workers. China is also flooding global markets with artificially low-priced exports. In response to China’s unfair trade practices and to counteract the resulting harms, today, President Biden is directing his Trade Representative to increase tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 on $18 billion of imports from China to protect American workers and businesses.   The Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda has already catalyzed more than $860 billion in business investments through smart, public incentives in industries of the future like electric vehicles (EVs), clean energy, and semiconductors. With support from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act, these investments are creating new American jobs in manufacturing and clean energy and helping communities that have been left behind make a comeback.   As President Biden says, American workers and businesses can outcompete anyone—as long as they have fair competition. But for too long, China’s government has used unfair, non-market practices. China’s forced technology transfers and intellectual property theft have contributed to its control of 70, 80, and even 90 percent of global production for the critical inputs necessary for our technologies, infrastructure, energy, and health care—creating unacceptable risks to America’s supply chains and economic security. Furthermore, these same non-market policies and practices contribute to China’s growing overcapacity and export surges that threaten to significantly harm American workers, businesses, and communities.   Today’s actions to counter China’s unfair trade practices are carefully targeted at strategic sectors—the same sectors where the United States is making historic investments under President Biden to create and sustain good-paying jobs—unlike recent proposals by Congressional Republicans that would threaten jobs and raise costs across the board. The previous administration’s trade deal with China  failed  to increase American exports or boost American manufacturing as it had promised. Under President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, nearly 800,000 manufacturing jobs have been created and new factory construction has doubled after both fell under the previous administration, and the trade deficit with China is the lowest in a decade—lower than any year under the last administration.   We will continue to work with our partners around the world to strengthen cooperation to address shared concerns about China’s unfair practices—rather than undermining our alliances or applying indiscriminate 10 percent tariffs that raise prices on all imports from all countries, regardless whether they are engaged in unfair trade. The Biden-Harris Administration recognizes the benefits for our workers and businesses from strong alliances and a rules-based international trade system based on fair competition.   Following an in-depth review by the United States Trade Representative, President Biden is taking action to protect American workers and American companies from China’s unfair trade practices. To encourage China to eliminate its unfair trade practices regarding technology transfer, intellectual property, and innovation, the President is directing increases in tariffs across strategic sectors such as steel and aluminum, semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries, critical minerals, solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes, and medical products.   Steel and Aluminum   The tariff rate on certain steel and aluminum products under Section 301 will increase from 0–7.5% to 25% in 2024.   Steel is a vital sector for the American economy, and American companies are leading the future of clean steel. Recently, the Biden-Harris Administration announced $6 billion for 33 clean manufacturing projects including for steel and aluminum, including the first new primary aluminum smelter in four decades, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. These investments will make the United States one of the first nations in the world to convert clean hydrogen into clean steel, bolstering the U.S. steel industry’s competitiveness as the world’s cleanest major steel producer.   American workers continue to face unfair competition from China’s non-market overcapacity in steel and aluminum, which are among the world’s most carbon intensive. China’s policies and subsidies for their domestic steel and aluminum industries mean high-quality, low-emissions U.S. products are undercut by artificially low-priced Chinese alternatives produced with higher emissions. Today’s actions will shield the U.S. steel and aluminum industries from China’s unfair trade practices.   Semiconductors   The tariff rate on semiconductors will increase from 25% to 50% by 2025.   China’s policies in the legacy semiconductor sector have led to growing market share and rapid capacity expansion that risks driving out investment by market-driven firms. Over the next three to five years, China is expected to account for almost half of all new capacity coming online to manufacture certain legacy semiconductor wafers. During the pandemic, disruptions to the supply chain, including legacy chips, led to price spikes in a wide variety of products, including automobiles, consumer appliances, and medical devices, underscoring the risks of overreliance on a few markets.   Through the CHIPS and Science Act, President Biden is making a nearly $53 billion investment in American semiconductor manufacturing capacity, research, innovation, and workforce. This will help counteract decades of disinvestment and offshoring that has reduced the United States’ capacity to manufacture semiconductors domestically. The CHIPS and Science Act includes $39 billion in direct incentives to build, modernize, and expand semiconductor manufacturing fabrication facilities as well as a 25% investment tax credit for semiconductor companies. Raising the tariff rate on semiconductors is an important initial step to promote the sustainability of these investments.   Electric Vehicles (EVs)   The tariff rate on electric vehicles under Section 301 will increase from 25% to 100% in 2024.   With extensive subsidies and non-market practices leading to substantial risks of overcapacity, China’s exports of EVs grew by 70% from 2022 to 2023—jeopardizing productive investments elsewhere. A 100% tariff rate on EVs will protect American manufacturers from China’s unfair trade practices.   This action advances President Biden’s vision of ensuring the future of the auto industry will be made in America by American workers. As part of the President’s Investing in America agenda, the Administration is incentivizing the development of a robust EV market through business tax credits for manufacturing of batteries and production of critical minerals, consumer tax credits for EV adoption, smart standards, federal investments in EV charging infrastructure, and grants to supply EV and battery manufacturing. The increase in the tariff rate on electric vehicles will protect these investments and jobs from unfairly priced Chinese imports.   Batteries, Battery Components and Parts, and Critical Minerals   The tariff rate on lithium-ion EV batteries will increase from 7.5%% to 25% in 2024, while the tariff rate on lithium-ion non-EV batteries will increase from 7.5% to 25% in 2026. The tariff rate on battery parts will increase from 7.5% to 25% in 2024.   The tariff rate on natural graphite and permanent magnets will increase from zero to 25% in 2026. The tariff rate for certain other critical minerals will increase from zero to 25% in 2024.   Despite rapid and recent progress in U.S. onshoring, China currently controls over 80 percent of certain segments of the EV battery supply chain, particularly upstream nodes such as critical minerals mining, processing, and refining. Concentration of critical minerals mining and refining capacity in China leaves our supply chains vulnerable and our national security and clean energy goals at risk. In order to improve U.S. and global resiliency in these supply chains, President Biden has invested across the U.S. battery supply chain to build a sufficient domestic industrial base. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Defense Production Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, the Biden-Harris Administration has invested nearly $20 billion in grants and loans to expand domestic production capacity of advanced batteries and battery materials. The Inflation Reduction Act also contains manufacturing tax credits to incentivize investment in battery and battery material production in the United States. The President has also established the American Battery Materials Initiative, which will mobilize an all-of-government approach to secure a dependable, robust supply chain for batteries and their inputs.   Solar Cells   The tariff rate on solar cells (whether or not assembled into modules) will increase from 25% to 50% in 2024.   The tariff increase will protect against China’s policy-driven overcapacity that depresses prices and inhibits the development of solar capacity outside of China. China has used unfair practices to dominate upwards of 80 to 90% of certain parts of the global solar supply chain, and is trying to maintain that status quo. Chinese policies and nonmarket practices are flooding global markets with artificially cheap solar modules and panels, undermining investment in solar manufacturing outside of China.   The Biden-Harris Administration has made historic investments in the U.S. solar supply chain, building on early U.S. government-enabled research and development that helped create solar cell technologies. The Inflation Reduction Act provides supply-side tax incentives for solar components, including polysilicon, wafers, cells, modules, and backsheet material, as well as tax credits and grant and loan programs supporting deployment of utility-scale and residential solar energy projects. As a result of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, solar manufacturers have already announced nearly $17 billion in planned investment under his Administration—an 8-fold increase in U.S. manufacturing capacity, enough to supply panels for millions of homes each year by 2030.   Ship-to-Shore Cranes   The tariff rate on ship-to-shore cranes will increase from 0% to 25% in 2024.   The Administration continues to deliver for the American people by rebuilding the United States’ industrial capacity to produce port cranes with trusted partners. A 25% tariff rate on ship-to-shore cranes will help protect U.S. manufacturers from China’s unfair trade practices that have led to excessive concentration in the market. Port cranes are essential pieces of infrastructure that enable the continuous movement and flow of critical goods to, from, and within the United States, and the Administration is taking action to mitigate risks that could disrupt American supply chains. This action also builds off of ongoing work to invest in U.S. port infrastructure through the President’s Investing in America Agenda. This port security initiative includes bringing port crane manufacturing capabilities back to the United States to support U.S. supply chain security and encourages ports across the country and around the world to use trusted vendors when sourcing cranes or other heavy equipment.   Medical Products   The tariff rates on syringes and needles will increase from 0% to 50% in 2024. For certain personal protective equipment (PPE), including certain respirators and face masks, the tariff rates will increase from 0–7.5% to 25% in 2024. Tariffs on rubber medical and surgical gloves will increase from 7.5% to 25% in 2026.   These tariff rate increases will help support and sustain a strong domestic industrial base for medical supplies that were essential to the COVID-19 pandemic response, and continue to be used daily in every hospital across the country to deliver essential care. The federal government and the private sector have made substantial investments to build domestic manufacturing for these and other medical products to ensure American health care workers and patients have access to critical medical products when they need them. American businesses are now struggling to compete with underpriced Chinese-made supplies dumped on the market, sometimes of such poor quality that they may raise safety concerns for health care workers and patients.   Today’s announcement reflects President Biden’s commitment to always have the back of American workers. When faced with anticompetitive, unfair practices from abroad, the President will deploy any and all tools necessary to protect American workers and industry.

Mitsubishi's Ambitious Plan To Save Itself In America Might Just Work

Mitsubishi's American operations haven't been healthy for some time, but a new five-year plan aims to turn that around with a slew of new cars.

Key Takeaways

  • Mitsubishi's new five-year business plan (Momentum 2030) aims to overhaul its lineup with one new model every year from 2026.
  • The plan focuses on electrification, product lineup expansion, modernized sales, and dealer network enhancements.
  • Mitsubishi plans to introduce new models, including a plug-in hybrid crossover and an adventure-focused passenger van.
  • Small pickup truck not ruled out.
  • Production in the USA will leverage Nissan facilities.

A year or so ago, I didn't see Mitsubishi surviving past 2030 in the US market without drastic changes. In my op-ed, I labeled it "just another Lancia waiting to die." Clearly, Mitsubishi was aware of the pickle it found itself in for the American market, as it's now announced a new five-year business plan to rescue the brand before the decade's end. Dubbed Momentum 2030, this ambitious five-year business plan will overhaul the Japanese automaker's current lineup, with one new or completely refreshed model to be launched every year between 2026 and 2030.

Mitsubishi is a Japanese automaker founded in1870 and is part of the Mitsubishi Group and broader Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Mitsubishi Motors officially started producing passenger vehicles in 1917, the Mitsubishi Model-A, before building a legacy as the manufacturer of off-roaders like the Pajero. Mitsubishi established a strong presence in motorsport, with models like the Lancer Evolution competing in WRC and the Pajero Evolution taking multiple wins in the Dakar Rally. Its best ever sales year in the USA was in 2002, when it sold 345,915 cars.

"Mitsubishi Motors is at a pivotal point in North America, charting a bold, clear and attainable plan for our future success in the United States."

- Mark Chaffin, MMNA president and CEO

The plan is built around four core pillars:

  • Electrification
  • A renewed and expanded product lineup
  • Modernized retail sales
  • An expanded dealer network and sales growth

Tell Me About The New Cars...

As is often the case with these plans, Mitsubishi didn't spill the beans on the exact models we can expect, but did say that the lineup will be nearly doubled by 2030. At present, the brand sells just four models in the US: Outlander , Outlander Sport, Mirage, and Eclipse Cross. The Outlander Sport will soon become defunct - a replacement has already been announced in Europe as a rebadged Renault that won't come to the US - and the subcompact Mirage will end production in late 2024, with a surplus of model production seeing it through the 2025 model year.

According to Automotive News , a new plug-in hybrid small crossover will launch in late 2025 as a de facto replacement for the Mirage, as confirmed by a dealer who attended the presentation of the new business plan. That's not the only model in the pipeline, though.

Leaning Into The Spirit Of Adventure

A passenger van is also expected, with a focus on outdoor adventure. It's believed this will be a production version of the D:X Concept - a six-seater plug-in hybrid minivan that launched at last year's Japan Mobility Show. This concept also appears in the shadowy teaser image accompanying Mitsubishi's announcement. The automaker will lean into the adventure theme and is planning a lifted Outlander Rugged Edition described as "Subaru Outback-like" in the same vein as the Outback Wilderness.

According to AN, there is also the potential for a small pickup truck. This won't be the Mitsubishi Triton/L200 available in other markets, however, as Mitsubishi is eyeing - but won't confirm - the potential of a compact, battery-electric pickup for the US market. Brand CEO Takao Kato previously said, "There is demand for environmentally friendly pickups with shorter driving range [...] so we would like to consider such a possibility as well."

Chaffin confirmed that Mitsubishi will debut two all-new vehicles in "segments in which the company does not currently compete." If one of these is the D:X minivan, then the other may well be a pickup. Whichever segments they fit into, they'll be a welcome addition to an aging lineup with ailing sales figures.

Multiple Steps To Electrification

Mitsubishi is one brand that has lagged behind the EV trend despite its ties to Renault and Nissan, both of which have several EVs already in production. While this might not be the worst thing, as EV adoption plateaus, the Japanese brand wants to embrace electrification beyond just the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid. It says the new onslaught of models will "advance with a blend of powertrains - hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric." In addition to the production D:X, we expect PHEVs to form a major part of this strategy, as this is an area where Mitsubishi has always been ahead of the curve. Standard hybrid powertrains will likely make up the bulk of its mass-market sales. But non-hybrid derivatives may still have a place in the lineup, described by Mitsubishi as "advanced-technology internal combustion engines" alongside the electrified options.

Mitsubishi Is The Big Winner In New Renault-Nissan Alliance

Nissan factories play a vital role in mitsubishi's future.

The Momentum 2030 plan will invest in North America by expanding the dealer network, but also by producing vehicles locally through Alliance assets. Those Alliance assets are courtesy of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, which means we can expect Mitsubishi vehicles to be produced at local Nissan plants. The likely candidate is Nissan's Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in Tennessee, which already produces the Nissan Pathfinder, Rogue, Murano, Leaf, and Infiniti QX60. Production of the Rogue is reportedly moving to Japan for the next generation in 2026, and the Leaf may move to the UK , leaving capacity at Smyrna for a crossover and a battery-electric vehicle to be produced. The latter is massively important, as it would mean plug-in and electric Mitsubishis may be eligible for the $7,500 tax credit.

"The next 10 years will be great for this brand. MMC is making a significant investment to ensure our collective future. Momentum 2030 will drive more sales, more service, more Mitsubishi vehicles on the road and more Mitsubishi dealer partners around the country. Yes, this is our time, Team Mitsubishi."

A man's social media post has gone viral (it's been viewed more than six million times) after it showed him being quoted £786.80 for two return train tickets from Newcastle to London.

X user Lee later clarified the tickets were for a Tuesday to Thursday trip in seven days time.

A screenshot of the quote showed the tickets he was trying to purchase were anytime single tickets, which had been advertised on the website as the "cheapest" option.

"Are you out of your actual minds?" Lee said in his post.

Other social media users were just as shocked, with many also complaining about increased fares.

"I book train travel for work colleagues and it's eye watering.. if it was cheap to use public transport, as it is in other countries, more people would use it," one replied.

"We live an hour away from London and train tickets on the weekend can set us back over £100 each. So then we drive which is the total opposite of what public transport is supposed to encourage?" said another.

Rail tickets increased by 4.9% in England and Wales in March.

An LNER spokesperson told the Money team: "We haven’t been provided with the full details for this journey. However, it appears the prices quoted are for peak time travel during a period of very high demand.

"Alternative trains have much cheaper Advance and 70 Minute Flex tickets available for travel in Standard from Newcastle to London King's Cross, subject to seating capacity being available.

"We always encourage customers to book as early as possible for best value fares."

Barclays has significantly increased its rates across a wide range of its purchase and remortgage deals.

Many of the major lender's deals are increasing by around 0.25%.

This includes its two-year fixed rate for remortgage at 60% loan to value, which will rise from 4.61% to 4.86%, which comes with a £999 fee.

Its two-year fixed rate for purchase or remortgage at 75% loan to value will also rise from 4.75% to 5.05%, and comes with a £1,999 fee.

The increases come at a time when several other lenders, such as TSB and Santander, have started cutting rates.

Respected predictor Cornwall Insight has a final prediction for tomorrow's energy price cap announcement.

Based on wholesale costs, the cap is expected to fall to £1,574.37 per year for a typical dual-fuel household - a 7% decrease.

The current price cap sits at £1,690 a year for a typical household.

In October 2021, the last time the cap was set before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was £1,277 per year.

Here's what else you need to know...

We'll be hearing tomorrow morning what the new energy price cap will be from July.

The cap is controlled by energy regulator Ofgem and aims to prevent households on variable tariffs being ripped off.

It doesn't represent a maximum bill. Instead it creates an average bill by limiting how much you pay per unit of gas and electricity, as well as setting a maximum daily standing charge (which all households must pay to stay connected to the grid).

It changes every three months - in January, April, July and October.

The changes are mostly based on the costs faced by suppliers for providing energy.

Who is covered by the energy price cap?

Most households will be covered by the energy price cap.

You'll know your bills are price-capped if you're on a standard variable tariff.

The owner of Toblerone, Milka and Oreo has been fined €337.5m (£288m) for anti-competitive practices in the EU.

Mondelez, which is one of the world's biggest confectionary companies, was found to have been involved in 22 unfair trade practices by the EU's competition commissioner.

In some instances, wholesalers, shoppers and traders were prevented from buying chocolate bars in another member state where they could be up to 40% cheaper or selling into a market where they could get a higher price for their product.

The EU's competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said it was "blatantly illegal".

She said the EU's investigation found customers were paying higher prices for chocolates, biscuits and coffee because of the practices.

A worrying proportion of households are experiencing problems with their smart meters, research from Citizens Advice suggests.

The charity has said energy companies are failing to fix problems with meters, with roughly 20% of households with a smart meter still having to regularly submit meter readings because their device isn't doing so automatically.

It warned people could end up with huge unexpected bills if their supplier isn't able to take an automatic reading for an extended period of time.

In one instance, a 71-year-old man was landed with a shock catch-up bill of almost £5,000.

Franc Kolar said he had been assured by his supplier the meter would work in his home, and this was the main reason he switched to them.

Current rules allow suppliers to back bill customers for a whole year, whether they have a smart meter or not.

Government figures show by the end of last year more than 10% of smart meters weren't working properly.

However Citizens Advice said this is "just the tip of the iceberg".

"The whole point of smart meters is to empower households to save energy and money, but in reality millions are missing out on those benefits due to problems with technology and poor supplier service," said the charity's chief executive, Dame Clare Moriarty.

"Energy companies are very keen for customers to get a smart meter but when issues arise they are often nowhere to be found. That has to change."

Nationwide has revealed it will give its customers a share of a £385m cash pot.

Those who are eligible will receive a £100 payment directly into their bank accounts as part of the Nationwide Fairer Share scheme, which aims to reward customers who meet certain criteria.

Customers will need to hold a qualifying current account and either a qualifying saving or mortgage product.

You will have need to have held the account since 31 March or earlier, and have the account still open in June.

The building society will be contacting customers between now and the end of May, and the payment will be sent out automatically.

Parsing out whether there's been any market election reaction is tricky given the big economic news yesterday - we learned inflation fell sharply (but was still higher than forecast) and the UK government borrowed the fourth largest amount in any April since records began.

The pound is still up against the euro - and so buys more of the Eurozone currency than before yesterday morning's economic announcements. It's still at a high not seen since early March with £1 equal to €1.1745.

Sterling has come down from its highs against the dollar seen yesterday morning but is still higher than most of the last month with a pound buying $1.2731.

The FTSE 100 (Financial Times Stock Exchange index of most valuable companies on the exchange) is down again this morning, 0.23%, after a sharp 0.56% drop in response to the inflation data.

The cost of UK government borrowing rose for the second day in a row as the interest rate on the benchmark 10-year government bond rose to 4.276%. Government bonds are IOUs sold on the market to raise funds.

It's a busy morning on the corporate front as many major companies listed on the London Stock Exchange have updated the market and issued full-year results.

The biggest contributor to the FTSE 100 fall was National Grid, the British and US electricity systems operator. In an effort to raise £6.8bn to fund grid investment, it said it would issue new shares and sell its US onshore wind business and a liquefied natural gas terminal.

Online retailer Oh Polly has introduced a new returns policy to clamp down on "repeat refunders".

The fashion site announced customers would be charged based on how much of their order they want to return.

Customers returning up to 50% of their order will be charged £2.99, while those who return more than 90% will be charged £8.99.

The company had previously charged a flat fee of £2.99 for all returns.

Oh Polly explained in an email to customers: "Customers with high return rates increase the cost of the business, and we can either alter prices collectively for all, or only for those who fall into the high returner category."

The UK's competition regulator has issued three tips for pet owners amid concerns they are paying too much on vet bills and are not given enough information about treatment options.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said today it was launching a full market investigation into the UK's veterinary sector.

It advised animal owners to:

  • Shop around for a vet and don't always go to the closest
  • Ask the vet if there are other treatment options
  • Think about buying medication from places other than your vet if it's not an emergency

Ocado has struck a deal with rapid grocery delivery service Getir to acquire its customers, after the latter pulled out of the UK.

Customers who were using Getir are being sent emails urging them to switch to Zoom by Ocado.

They also received a 25%-off discount and free delivery on their first Zoom by Ocado order.

Most younger workers want the chance to have a job in another country, research suggests.

A survey of 1,000 people aged 18-34 found half of respondents would be more likely to stay in a role for longer if they had the option to move overseas for a period of time.

The young people cited a better quality of life, salary and benefits, and better work-life balance, as the main reasons for wanting to move overseas for work, according to employee mobility platform Jobbatical.

"A decade ago, candidates were searching for the most exciting office and work perks possible, but today the draw of international living, better quality of life and smoother work-life balance is top of the wishlist for ambitious, high-quality talent," said Karoli Hindriks, co-founder of Jobbatical.

Fact sheet: president biden takes action to protect american workers and businesses from china’s unfair trade practices, office of public affairs.

American workers continue to face unfair competition from China’s non-market overcapacity in steel and aluminum, which are among the world’s most carbon-intensive.

How Biden’s Trade War With China Differs From Trump’s

The president is trying a targeted approach, with allies, to beat Beijing in the race to own the clean energy future. Those weren’t his predecessor’s goals.

Jim Tankersley has covered tariffs and China policy across several presidential administrations.

Joseph R. Biden Jr. ran for the White House as a sharp critic of President Donald J. Trump’s crackdown on trade with China. In office, though, he has taken Mr. Trump’s trade war with Beijing and escalated it, albeit with a very different aim.

The two men, locked in a rematch election this fall, share a rhetorical fondness for beating up on China’s economic practices, including accusing the Chinese of cheating at global trade. They also share a building-block policy for countering Beijing: hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs, or taxes, on Chinese imports. Those tariffs were first imposed by Mr. Trump and have been maintained by President Biden.

On Tuesday, Mr. Biden announced that he is increasing some of those tariffs. That includes quadrupling electric vehicle tariffs to 100 percent, tripling certain levies on steel and aluminum products to 25 percent, and doubling the rate on semiconductors to 50 percent.

But Mr. Biden’s trade war differs from Mr. Trump’s in important ways. Mr. Trump was trying to bring back a broad swath of factory jobs outsourced to China. Mr. Biden is seeking to increase production and jobs in a select group of emerging high-tech industries — including clean energy sectors, like electric vehicles, that Mr. Trump shows little interest in cultivating.

Mr. Biden has pulled more policy levers, some of them created by Mr. Trump. He has imposed more restrictions on trade with China, including limiting sales of American technology to Beijing, while funneling federal subsidies to American manufacturers trying to compete with Chinese production.

And in a sharp break from Mr. Trump’s go-it-alone posture, Mr. Biden’s strategy relies on bringing international allies together to counter China through a mix of domestic incentives and, potentially, coordinated tariffs on Chinese goods.

As they compete for the White House again, Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump are both promising to further increase trade pressure on China, which both men accuse of unfair trade practices that disadvantage American workers. Here is how their plans overlap, and where they diverge sharply.

Mr. Trump’s plan includes more tariffs and less trade.

Mr. Trump broke decades of political consensus by pushing aggressive restrictions on trade with China as president. He imposed tariffs on more than $360 billion worth of Chinese products, including toys, electronics and household furnishings, drawing retaliatory tariffs from Beijing.

In 2020, he struck an agreement with Chinese officials that called for China to increase its purchases of exported goods from America, including agricultural products, and carry out a series of economic reforms. China came nowhere close to fulfilling those terms . Lael Brainard, the director of Mr. Biden’s National Economic Council, told reporters this week that the deal “did not deliver on its promises.”

Mr. Trump has pledged new efforts to sever the nations’ trading relationship if he is elected to a second term. Those include barriers to investment between the two countries, along with bans on imports of Chinese steel, electronics and pharmaceuticals. He has also proposed an additional 10 percent tariff on all imports to the United States, not just those from China. And he has criticized Mr. Biden.

Chinese officials were “petrified of me putting on additional tariffs,” Mr. Trump told CNBC in March. “And we don’t use that, China is right now our boss. They are the boss of the United States, almost like we’re a subsidiary of China, and that’s because the Biden administration has been so weak.”

Mr. Biden is building on his predecessor’s efforts.

Mr. Biden was once a critic of Mr. Trump’s tariffs. “President Trump may think he’s being tough on China,” Mr. Biden said in a 2019 speech , as a candidate for president, “but all he has delivered is more pain for American farmers, manufacturers and consumers.”

Early in Mr. Biden’s administration, his aides debated rolling back many of Mr. Trump’s taxes on Chinese imports to ease the pain of rapid price increases. They ultimately decided against it. Instead, Mr. Biden will announce on Tuesday that he is increasing tariffs on about $18 billion worth of Chinese imports, including solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes and certain medical technologies.

His administration has also imposed new restrictions on exports of American semiconductors and chip-making materials to China, and it has taken the first step to cracking down on imported Chinese smart-car technologies .

Administration officials offer economic rationale for all of those moves. But Mr. Biden is also responding to swing-state political pressures — and seeking to outflank Mr. Trump on the China issue. Last month, he called for higher taxes on Chinese heavy metal imports in a speech to steelworkers in Pennsylvania, a crucial state where polls show he is struggling to overcome voter anxiety about the economy.

And while Biden aides say his tariff approach is more targeted — and, by extension, more effective — than Mr. Trump’s, the president has notably decided not to roll back any of the original tariffs that Mr. Trump imposed on Chinese products.

A greener war, with allies this time.

Mr. Biden has tailored his policy, though. He has consciously coupled new restrictions on China trade with the strategic investments, in the form of government spending and tax credits, that he has used to entice new factory production in a handful of targeted sectors.

Perhaps no product better exemplifies the divergence between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump on trade policy than electric vehicles. Mr. Trump sees them as a scourge, and has said efforts to accelerate their adoption will result in an “assassination” of American jobs .

Mr. Biden has signed multiple laws meant to supercharge electric vehicle production and consumption in the United States, including an infrastructure bill with funding for 500,000 charging stations and a climate law with lucrative incentives to make and sell the vehicles in the United States. They are part of an ambitious industrial strategy to build up American factory capacity for a host of clean energy technologies meant to fight climate change and to dominate advanced manufacturing industries globally for decades to come.

Mr. Biden is increasingly worried that a flood of low-cost electric cars and other goods from China could undermine those efforts, and he is using trade policy to protect his industrial investments. His tariff increases planned for Tuesday include a quadrupling of the rate on imported electric vehicles, to 100 percent.

And while Mr. Trump antagonized allies by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum from Japan, the European Union and elsewhere, the president has sought to bring together a coalition of wealthy democracies to battle China in clean energy. His administration led an effort at the Group of 7 summit last year to outline a harmonized strategy of subsidies to compete with China’s state funding for new technologies.

Many current and former administration officials hope that cooperation will now extend to tariffs as well, starting with Europe, which is conducting its own investigations of Chinese trade practices and appears poised to raise its existing tax rate on imported Chinese electric vehicles.
