Frequently asked questions

The act of putting someone else’s ideas or words into your own words is called paraphrasing, rephrasing, or rewording. Even though they are often used interchangeably, the terms can mean slightly different things:

Paraphrasing   is restating someone else’s ideas or words in your own words while retaining their meaning. Paraphrasing changes sentence structure, word choice, and sentence length to convey the same meaning.

Rephrasing   may involve more substantial changes to the original text, including changing the order of sentences or the overall structure of the text.

Rewording   is changing individual words in a text without changing its meaning or structure, often using synonyms.

It can. One of the two methods of paraphrasing is called “Fluency.” This will improve the language and fix grammatical errors in the text you’re paraphrasing.

Paraphrasing and using a paraphrasing tool aren’t cheating. It’s a great tool for saving time and coming up with new ways to express yourself in writing.  However, always be sure to credit your sources.  Avoid plagiarism.

If you don’t properly reference text paraphrased from another source, you’re plagiarising. If you use someone else’s text and paraphrase it, you need to credit the original source. You can do that by using citations. There are different styles, like APA, MLA, Harvard, and Chicago. Find more information about referencing sources  here.

Paraphrasing   without crediting the original author   is a   form of plagiarism , because you’re presenting someone else’s ideas as if they were your own.

However, paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you correctly referencing the source . This means including an   in-text citation   and a full reference, formatted according to your required   citation style.

As well as citing, make sure that any paraphrased text is completely rewritten in your own words.

Plagiarism   means using someone else’s words or ideas and passing them off as your own.   Paraphrasing   means putting someone else’s ideas in your own words.

So when does paraphrasing count as plagiarism?

  • Paraphrasing   is   plagiarism if you don’t properly credit the original author.
  • Paraphrasing   is   plagiarism if your text is too close to the original wording (even if you cite the source). If you directly copy a sentence or phrase, you should   quote   it instead.
  • Paraphrasing  is not   plagiarism if you put the author’s ideas completely in your own words   and   properly referencing the source .

✏️ How to Rephrase: Strategies to Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of stealing someone’s intellectual property. It can be deliberate but often happens unintentionally. In academia, this mostly means taking someone’s idea and not crediting the source. But don't worry: there are many ways avoid this. Here are the basics:

  • Always using a plagiarism checker . This way, you’ll know for sure that what you’ve written is 100% yours.
  • Quoting means adopting the original author’s wording directly and putting it in quotation marks. Make sure to resort to direct quoting only if it strengthens your argument, or if the quote is particularly expressive.
  • A summary is a shortened version of the source. You don’t paraphrase its entire contents but break it down into the crucial parts.
  • Taking notes while reading articles. Try to formulate the central ideas in simple words. This way, you'll automatically have a first draft of what you want to paraphrase.
  • Lastly, changing the sentence structure while paraphrasing will help you sound natural.

Keep reading to learn more about rewording sentences and quotes.

📖 How to Reword a Sentence

Paraphrasing is very similar to summarizing. Both are key skills for writers. With these recommendations, you’ll always rewrite correctly and without plagiarizing.

To some terms, such as "globalization," you’ll hardly find alternatives. However, common words can easily be replaced.

Use various conjunctions or break the sentences up.

Replace nouns with verbs, verbs with adjectives, or vice versa.

This includes:

  • Switching the voice from passive to active and the other way round.
  • Turning clauses into phrases and vice versa, e.g., by omitting or adding pronouns.

This being said, the most effective method to rephrase something is by using all these techniques combined. Here are some examples:

“Categorization has become a major field of study, thanks primarily to the pioneering work of Eleanor Rosch, who made categorization an issue. (Lakoff 1987: 7)”

“Eleanor Rosch, who was the first to point out the importance of categorization, paved the way to make it an important subject. (see Lakoff 1987: 7)”

In this version, you can see multiple strategies at work. The structure is different, and all possible words were substituted. Yet, it still contains the original meaning. That’s precisely what we want!

Let’s have a look at this variant instead:

Paraphrase:

“Categorization is now a major field of study. It can be credited to the pioneering work of Eleanor Rosch, the first person to make categorization an issue.”

While the voice is switched in this paraphrase, it still is too close to the original. It uses the same wording and doesn’t credit the source.

Here’s another example:

“In a rare instance of consensus, linguists agree that grammar is extremely complex and hard to properly describe. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

“Linguists rarely agree with each other, but they all acknowledge that grammar is problematic and that it’s nearly impossible to explain it correctly. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

This version has synonyms and adds an extra preposition. Unfortunately, the alternatives "problematic" and "explain" tamper with the original meaning. Let's see how to paraphrase this paragraph properly:

“While linguists rarely share the same opinions, they all admit that grammar is almost impossible to depict comprehensively due to its intricate nature. (Langacker 2008: 27)”

In this case, the concept stays the same. The phrases are changed; there are a new structure and extra conjunction. Perfect!

💬 How to Reword a Quote

If you want your assignments to sound natural, provide the proper context for your quotes. It includes introducing them with phrases such as according to, in the words of, as defined by . Citing is appropriate, if:

  • The wording is especially valuable;
  • You need to support a claim;
  • You want to debate and analyze the author’s position.

When writing, use a mix of direct quotes and paraphrases with an emphasis on the latter. Once you cite a source, adhere to specific standards. Stick to any one of these styles throughout your entire text:

  • An in-text APA style reference can be either narrative , e.g. Zaliznyak & Šmelev, 1997, or parenthetical , e.g. (Zaliznyak & Šmelev, 1997).
  • MLA formatting style requires the author’s last name and the page, for example, Clasmeier 37.
  • When citing Chicago style , all source data (name, title, publisher, year, page) goes into the footnotes.

Domestic violence victims are often criminalized. A California bill wants to change that

Many say the bill would help survivors be heard, broadening the range of people able to petition to see their sentence reviewed

I n 1995, on the day before Kelly Savage-Rodriguez planned to flee her abusive husband, she ran some final errands while her children, ages three and one, napped. She hoped to take them on the early morning Amtrak from Porterville, California , to Los Angeles and stay with her brother, but when she returned, she said, she found that her husband had beaten and killed her three-year-old son, Justin. She called 911. The police arrested her along with her husband.

Savage-Rodriguez was jailed as she awaited trial, and said her lawyer did not have training in advocating for clients who suffered domestic violence. The judge used her history of abuse against her, she said, and said she was equally at fault for her son’s death under California’s “ failure to protect ” charges that can criminalize the non-abusive parent in a domestic violence case because she had not fled. She was later convicted and sentenced to life without parole, same as her abuser.

Woman holds a child

In the United States, survivors who are criminally charged often do not have their history of abuse taken into account during court to help judges and juries understand the circumstances, and they can face scrutiny or disbelief when they do share their stories.

“It didn’t matter what I did or didn’t do, it didn’t matter how much I was trying,” said Savage-Rodriguez, who was released in 2018 following a pardon and is now a coordinator for California Coalition for Women Prisoners. “None of it mattered. They wanted a conviction and that’s all that they were concerned with.”

Across the country, advocates are pushing for sentencing reforms that would provide a more trauma-informed approach to survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. In the past five years, lawmakers in New York, Louisiana, Georgia, Virginia and Wyoming have passed legislation to vacate the sentences of survivors.

Now, organizers in California, where Savage-Rodriguez is from and where many other survivors are still incarcerated, are mobilizing for sentencing reform. Since 2021, the state already mandates courts to consider the experiences of survivors who have been convicted of non-violent crime. But a new bill championed by assembly member Mia Bonta would go much further, allowing all abuse survivors to petition the court to vacate their arrests, convictions or adjudications, and also order law enforcement and courts to seal records related to the arrest and offense.

D omestic violence is estimated to impact up to 10 million people in the US, and as many as one in four women and one in nine men. Among the prison population, the rate is even higher. According to the Felony Murder Elimination Project , up to 90% of people incarcerated in US women’s prisons report having experienced emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse. This doesn’t just pertain to adult women – 84% of girls in juvenile detention have experienced family violence.

Domestic abuse and human trafficking survivors are particularly vulnerable to falling into the criminal justice system. They might face various hurdles to leave the violent situation, such as risks of losing financial or housing security, or experience victim-blaming. Additionally, law enforcement and courts are often ill-equipped to meet survivors’ victimization and may not perceive that their actions might be based on a history of abuse rather than an immediate physical altercation.

“Nobody wins because we want justice for the victim and at the same time, the survivor [of abuse] is also a victim,” said Ny Nourn. Nourn was sentenced to life without parole when she was 21 , for her witness of a murder committed by her abusive boyfriend. “The focus should be about healing by ways of holding people who have done harm accountable, and criminalization or incarceration is not the answer.”

Growing up in San Diego, California, seeking love and validation after witnessing her mother abused by her stepfather, Nourn got into a relationship with a man twice her age, she said. She had a one-night stand with the supervisor at her job while she was a high school senior, and when her boyfriend found out, he beat and raped her, she recalled. He then killed her supervisor, in front of her, and threatened to kill her family if she told anyone, she said.

Nourn kept the secret to herself. But two years later, she confided in two co-workers, telling them about her rape and the murder of her supervisor, she said. They encouraged her to talk to the police.

Nourn was arrested and charged with first-degree murder of the supervisor following a 10-hour interrogation, she said. She went to trial with her abuser as her co-defendant. Her defense attorney knew about the history of abuse, but told her it didn’t matter, she recalled.

“A judge said I was responsible for my abuser’s behavior,” Nourn said. “I couldn’t control him. Yet I was responsible for his actions.”

Nourn and her abuser were both sentenced to life. She was sent to the Central California Women’s Facility – the largest women’s prison in the world. There she started attending a support group for intimate partner violence, where she met many other women who shared similar experiences.

Nearly four years into her sentence, Nourn filed a habeas writ that resulted in her life sentence being vacated and was granted a second trial, during which the court decided her defense attorney was ineffective counsel because he failed to present evidence of intimate partner violence. Nourn’s sentence was commuted to 15 years, and she was released in 2017. Three years later, she was pardoned by the California governor , and she now serves as co-executive director of the Asian Prisoner Support Committee, an organization that provides support for Asians and Pacific Islanders who are incarcerated, and a volunteer member of Survived and Punished, which supports criminalized survivors.

“It’s important to give survivors a voice,” Nourn said. “I think it starts with individuals, a community of people that have power to really broaden or expand this bill. That’s my hope.”

C alifornia’s new bill will broaden the range of domestic violence survivors able to petition to see their sentence reviewed, said Darya Larizadeh, a senior policy attorney at the National Center for Youth Law who has been working on the bill with the Justice for Survivors Coalition.

“We really want to bring California to be in line with other states that are already seeing this as a priority and doing much better to support survivors,” said Larizadeh.

The bill would also prevent survivors who have an immigration hold from being transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) and deported. It also helps survivors to clear their record, which might otherwise cause adverse consequences , such as trouble finding employment or housing.

With no federal pathway providing relief to survivors, they are left to work with the laws in place in their individual states. While there were only five states that did not offer some kind of relief to survivors as of spring 2023, most of the legislation only applied to prostitution and human trafficking victims, did not apply to domestic violence survivors and had narrow scope of eligibility such as only applying to minors or not including retroactivity.

Larizadeh also said that she had heard from public defenders across California that the original Justice for Survivors Act passed in 2020 had had an impact providing relief to some survivors, and she hoped that this bill would expand the relief to all incarcerated survivors of violence.

“Survivors need some kind of relief, some kind of acknowledgment to what they’ve also gone through,” said Susan Bustamante, a volunteer with Survived and Punished and member of the California Coalition for Women Prisoners. “People’s voices need to be heard.”

Bustamante is a re-entry coach at Home Free , a transitional housing program that helps domestic violence survivors and other women who have experienced trauma reenter communities after being released from prison. She is a survivor herself.

‘Free all criminalized survivors now!’ on a banner with posters with people’s photos underneath

Her husband abused her for six years until she confided in her brother, who promised to take care of it, she said. In 1987, on the day before she turned 25, Bustamante’s brother killed her husband. Her brother died before the trial, and Bustamante was blamed for her husband’s death, she said. She was sentenced to life.

“It was really, really heartbreaking. You have no hope,” Bustamante, 68, said.

As a re-entry coach, Bustamante helps incarcerated survivors prepare for their parole board hearings, hosts domestic violence events at the prisons and supports them on their needs following release. She hoped the bill would help survivors be seen and acknowledged.

“It’s such an important cause,” Bustamante said. “They just are so busy trying to lock people up, they’re not hearing them, because if they heard them, they wouldn’t get these harsh sentences.”

A Culture Warrior Takes a Late Swing

The editor and essayist Joseph Epstein looks back on his life and career in two new books.

NEVER SAY YOU’VE HAD A LUCKY LIFE: Especially If You’ve Had a Lucky Life , by Joseph Epstein

FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTENT: New and Selected Essays , by Joseph Epstein

When Tammy Wynette was asked to write a memoir in her mid-30s, she initially declined, she said in an interview, because “I didn’t think my life was over yet.” The publisher responded: Has it occurred to you that in 15 years no one might care? She wrote the book. “Stand by Your Man: An Autobiography” (1979) was a hit.

The essayist and editor Joseph Epstein — whose memoir “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life,” is out now, alongside a greatest-hits collection titled “Familiarity Breeds Content” — has probably never heard Wynette sing except by accident. (In a 1993 essay, he wrote that he wished he didn’t know who Willie Nelson was, because it was a sign of a compromised intellect.) But his memoir illustrates another reason not to wait too long to commit your life to print.

There is no indication that Epstein, who is in his late 80s, has lost a step. His prose is as genial and bland, if comparison to his earlier work is any indication, as it ever was. But there’s a softness to his memories of people, perhaps because it was all so long ago. This is the sort of memoir that insists someone was funny, or erudite, or charismatic, while rarely providing the crucial details.

Epstein aw-shucks his way into “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” — pretending to be self-effacing while not being so in the least is one of his salient qualities as a writer — by warning readers, “I may not have had a sufficiently interesting life to merit an autobiography.” This is because he “did little, saw nothing notably historic, and endured not much out of the ordinary of anguish or trouble or exaltation.” Quickly, however, he concludes that his life is indeed worth relating, in part because “over the years I have acquired the literary skill to recount that life well.”

Here he is wrong in both directions. His story is interesting enough to warrant this memoir. His personal life has taken complicated turns. And as the longtime editor of the quarterly magazine The American Scholar, and a notably literate conservative culture warrior, he’s been in the thick of things.

He does lack the skill to tell his own story, though, if by “skill” we mean not well-scrubbed Strunk and White sentences but close and penetrating observation. Epstein favors tasseled loafers and bow ties, and most of his sentences read as if they were written by a sentient tasseled loafer and edited by a sentient bow tie.

He grew up in Chicago, where his father manufactured costume jewelry. The young Epstein was popular and, in high school, lettered in tennis. His title refers to being lucky, and a big part of that luck, in his estimation, was to grow up back when kids could be kids, before “the therapeutic culture” took over.

This complaint sets the tone of the book. His own story is set next to a rolling series of cultural grievances. He’s against casual dress, the prohibition of the word “Negro,” grade inflation, the Beat Generation, most of what occurred during the 1960s, standards slipping everywhere, de-Westernizing college curriculums, D.E.I. programs, you name it. His politics aren’t the problem. We can argue about those. American culture needs more well-read conservatives. The problem is that in his search for teachable moments, his memoir acquires the cardboard tone of a middling opinion column.

His youth was not all tennis lessons and root beer floats. He and his friends regularly visited brothels because, he writes, sex was not as easy to come by in the 1950s. He was kicked out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for his role in the selling of a stolen accounting exam to other students.

He was lucky to find a place at the University of Chicago, a place of high seriousness. The school changed him. He began to reassess his values. He began to read writers like Irving Howe, Sidney Hook, Midge Decter and Norman Podhoretz, and felt his politics pull to the right.

After college, he was drafted into the Army and ended up in Little Rock, Ark., where he met his first wife. At the time, she was a waitress at a bar and restaurant called the Gar Hole. Here Epstein’s memoir briefly threatens to acquire genuine weight.

She had lost custody of her two sons after a divorce. Together they got them back, and she and Epstein had two sons of their own. After their divorce, Epstein took all four of the boys. This is grist for an entire memoir, but Epstein passes over it quickly. One never gets much of a sense of what his boys were like, or what it was like to raise them. He later tells us that he has all but lost touch with his stepsons and has not seen them for decades.

He worked for the magazine The New Leader and the Encyclopaedia Britannica before becoming the editor of The American Scholar in 1975. It was a position he would hold for 22 years. He also taught at Northwestern University for nearly three decades.

At The American Scholar he began to write a long personal essay in each issue, under the pseudonym Aristides. He wrote 92 of these, on topics such as smoking and envy and reading and height. Most ran to 6,500 words, or about 4,000 words longer than they should have been.

Many magazine editors like to write every so often, to keep a hand in. But there is something unseemly about an editor chewing up acres of space in his own publication on a regular basis. Editorially, it’s a droit du seigneur imposition.

A selection of these essays, as well as some new ones, can now be found in “Familiarity Breeds Content.” In his introduction to this book, Christopher Buckley overpraises Epstein, leaving the reader no choice but to start mentally pushing back.

Buckley calls Epstein “the most entertaining living essayist in the English language.” (Not while Michael Kinsley, Lorrie Moore, Calvin Trillin, Sloane Crosley and Geoff Dyer, among many others, walk the earth.) He repurposes Martin Amis’s comment about Saul Bellow: “One doesn’t read Saul Bellow. One can only reread him.” To this he adds, “Ditto Epstein.” (Epstein is no Saul Bellow.) Buckley says, “Joe Epstein is incapable of writing a boring sentence.”

Well. How about this one, from an essay about cats?

A cat, I realize, cannot be everyone’s cup of fur.

Or this one, from an essay about sports and other obsessions:

I have been told there are people who wig out on pasta.

Or this one, about … guess:

When I was a boy, it occurs to me now, I always had one or another kind of hat.
Juggling today appears to be undergoing a small renaissance.
If one is looking to save on fuel bills, politics is likely to heat up a room quicker than just about anything else.
In tennis I was most notable for flipping and catching my racket in various snappy routines.

The essays are, by and large, as tweedy and self-satisfied as these lines make them sound. There are no wild hairs in them, no sudden deepenings of tone. Nothing is at stake. We are stranded with him on the putt-putt course.

Epstein fills his essays with quotation after quotation, as ballast. I am a fan of well-deployed, free-range quotations. So many of Epstein’s are musty and reek of Bartlett’s. They are from figures like Lord Chesterfield and Lady Mary Montagu and Sir Herbert Grierson and Tocqueville and Walpole and Carlyle. You can feel the moths escaping from the display case in real time.

To be fair, I circled a few sentences in “Familiarity Breeds Content” happily. I’m with him on his distrust of “fun couples.” He writes, “A cowboy without a hat is suitable only for bartending.” I liked his observation, which he borrowed from someone else, that a career has five stages:

(1) Who is Joseph Epstein? (2) Get me Joseph Epstein. (3) We need someone like Joseph Epstein. (4) What we need is a young Joseph Epstein. (5) Who is Joseph Epstein?

It’s no fun to trip up a writer on what might have been a late-career victory lap. Epstein doesn’t need me to like his work. He’s published more than 30 books, and you can’t do that unless you’ve made a lot of readers happy.
