The best way to get research notes.
If you want to craft Guild Wars 2 End of Dragons expansion items, you need the new Research Notes currency. Lots and lots of Research Notes.
Some popular uses for GW2 Research Notes are for crafting:
- Jade Bot Cores and Modules to upgrade your Jade Bot.
- Armor and weapons with the Harrier’s, Dragon’s, or Ritualist’s stats.
- Shadow Serpent weapon skins.
How to get Research Notes
Research Notes come from salvaging craftable items.
- Each kit has 250 charges.
- You get one free when you unlock Jade Bots.
- You can buy them from an assortment of vendors for 2 Silver.
- Crafted armor.
- Crafted weapons.
- Crafted tonics.
- Crafted jewelry.
- Crafted potions, Tier 2 crafting level (Initiate) and above.
- Utility items , Tier 2 crafting level (Initiate) and above.
- Loaf of Walnut Sticky Bread.
- Omnomberry Compote.
- Raspberry Peach Compote.
- Bowl of Blackberry Pie Filling.
- Bowl of Cherry Pie Filling.
- Loaf of Tarragon Bread.
- Probably a bunch of others people haven’t added to the Wiki yet.
- The Research Kit works like a salvage kit.
- Double-click the Research Kit, then click the item to salvage it.
- Research Notes are deposited directly into your account wallet.
- The higher the item’s value, the more Research Notes it drops.
- Sigils and Runes are destroyed by the Research Kit.
The fastest, easiest, and cheapest way to get Research Notes
With all that in mind, what are the best ways to get GW2 Research Notes?
Our pick: Craft Silver and Gold jewelry
Tier 2 and Tier 3 Jeweler items are virtually worthless on the Trading Post. The materials to make them (Silver Ore, Gold Ore, Lumps, and Shards) can’t be used to make anything else.
Best of all, if you’re crafting the items yourself, you can skip the salvage step. If you have a Research Kit in your inventory, tick the box on the crafting UI to automatically salvage the items you craft. They are transformed directly into Research Notes and deposited into your account wallet.
Read more about Jeweler in our Jeweler crafting guide.
If you have leftovers: Halloween foods and some potions
All the Halloween foods and some of the Halloween potions are salvageable for 1 Research Note apiece. This is an excellent way to free up space on your holiday alt !
If you have too much of a good thing: Ascended Items
Don’t buy or craft Ascended items just to salvage them for Research Notes. However, if you have unused Ascended items cluttering up your storage, each one gives 500 Research Notes .
If your Ascended item can’t be salvaged for Research Notes because it’s not craftable, the wiki says you can stat-change the item to normal Ascended gear in the Mystic Forge.
Crafted armor sets
If you plan to buy armor pieces to salvage for Research Notes, the following armor sets are craftable and yield Research Notes:
Fine and Masterwork
- Bloodsaw Leather
- Embroidered
- Iron Legion
- Tempered Scale
- Light Illustrious
- Medium Illustrious
- Heavy Illustrious
Crafted weapon sets
If you plan to buy weapons to salvage for Research Notes, the following weapon sets are craftable and yield Research Notes:
- Charged Stormcaller
- Dragonsblood
- Dragon Slayer
- Illuminated Boreal
- Restored Boreal
- Shadow Serpent
- Stormcaller
- Fiery Dragon Slayer
- Heroic Dragonsblood
- Icy Dragon Slayer

If you have unnecessary ascended equipment/boxes lying around convert them with cheapest insignia on mystic forge then research.
This will save you from trouble of processing and working on stacks of items as it gives about a few hundred notes per ascended probably cheaper since you won't be buying items to salvage.
- 6 months later...
- 1) If you have legendary gear or enough gear for your specs: converting looted ascended as you go is the best. It's the least micro intensive, but even if you can self sustain if you do T4s/cms dailies I don't think it is the best returns (you craft or buy an insigna then reroll stats in the mystic forge then it becomes "researchable"
- 2) best bang for your buck from thin air: crafting orichalcum or equivalent gear using gosshammer insignas (76 notes)
- 3) acceptable bang for your buck: crafting mithril gear or equivalent with silk insignas (5ish notes)
- 4) junk mode: buy crappiest crafted items in bulk and disassemble in bulk (most gold intensive), event food/crappy pots that nobody wants are your best bet (1 note)
I used to buy craftable armor items (blue/green) lvl 75 for max 1.4 silver each. They give 5 notes. That's max 28 copper/note.
Apparently crafting in large numbers is out atm. I used to get large amounts in the past, now I can be glad when I get 5 a day.

Share. Penthos2021. • 2 yr. ago. I got almost all my research notes for my legendary by buying stacks of potent potion of undead slaying (like 1s 74cp) and then buying a bunch of research kits and salvaging all the potions… each salvaged potion gives you 1 note with a diminishing chance for up to 25. 6.

Honestly I'm getting confused at why they keep disabling items since I thought the point of the Research Kit was to eat up all the low-value items from the econemy, but it instead feels like they want us to salvage high-value items which are already in a short supply/demand in comparison.
Acquired by deconstructing crafted items with research kits. Used at vendors in Cantha and to craft newer recipes. Research Notes are a currency and crafting material earned by salvaging crafted items with a Research Kit, or by toggling the option to automatically research crafted items in the crafting interface.

after you've exhausted all your earring components, i would pick a barbaric armor piece and craft/research that until you have all your notes. for example "Valkyrie Barbaric Helm." they only require mithril, silk, and a t5 mat like large fang. Buy like 60 stacks of mithril, put on a movie, and make earrings.
Having research notes hovering around 1s already is sort of concerning. Effectively, that means that making a T10 Jade core costs nearly 17g in research notes alone, and obviously has a lot of other material costs on top of that. (This is also not counting the notes needed to purchase the recipes). Having the notes there to get rid of lower ...
You get a research kit mailed to each character the first time you equip a jade bot core. I think it has to be at least a T6 core. Anyway, from I've seen most vendors and even crafting vendors (except chef) now sell it. Even the Tyria ones.

Then you didn't use a "Research Kit" for the salvage. If you can salvage it with the "Research Kit", it will give you "Research Notes". Don't use the normal salvage kits. Correct kit was used. I was testing to see if number of notes you get would be higher if you used a major or superior.
If you have some laying around, convert them to crafted type if necessary then use the kit. I used Cup of Light-Roasted Coffee - each one gives your around 1.3 research notes. Most expensive ingredient is a Milling Stone, cost 29c right now (used to be dirt cheap though) Sounds like something a developer would say.
