Description

If you have a site with Assignment (2.2) disabled/hidden, when somebody restores a backup with a Assignment (2.2) activity, it will show up in the restore process, saying it will be restored, etc, but when the restore is finished, it won't be available.

If the site administrator re-enables Assignment (2.2) site-wide, it will be there, so it is restored, but to the user, it just completely disappeared with no warning.

In my opinion, there should be a site setting that causes Assignment (2.2) activities to be automatically upgraded on restore - or at least add a warning to the user that the assignment won't be available.

It boils down to - if a site wants to completely upgrade to the new Assignment, they run the upgrader, disable the old Assignment (2.2), the behaviour to the end-user becomes inconsistant.

Moodle - Assignment

What does the assignment activity do.

The Assignment activity enables a lecturer to communicate tasks, collect work a s well as provide grades and feedback.

Students can submit any digital content (files), such as word-processed documents, spreadsheets, images, or audio and video clips. Alternatively, or in addition, the assignment may require students to type text directly into the text editor. An assignment can also be used to remind students of 'real-world' assignments they need to complete offline, such as art work, and thus not require any digital content. Students can submit work individually or as a member of a group.

When reviewing assignments, teachers can leave feedback comments and upload files, such as marked-up student submissions, documents with comments or spoken audio feedback. Assignments can be graded using a numerical or custom scale or an advanced grading method such as a rubric. Final grades are recorded in the Gradebook.

Are you unsure if you should use Moodle assignment or Turnitin to help deliver and manage student assessments? Check out our comparison guide to help you decide which tool is more suitable.

Adding an Assignment

Before you can make any changes to your Moodle site content, you must first enable editing . To do this, click on t he 'Edit mode' butt on located at the top right of the page.

Edit button activated in Moodle

With editing enabled, you will see in each topic the following button :

Add an activity or resource button in Moodle

Click the Assignment icon from the list to add. You can find more information about assignments by clicking "Explore this tool".

Resource browser in Moodle, assignment highlighted

Step 4 – General settings

You will now see the 'Adding a new Assignment' page. Give your assignment a name, assessment type and weighting here . You can also add a description , and choose whether to display it on the course page (if not, students will only see it when clicking on the assignment) .

You should provide instructions for students in the ' Activity instructions ' and have the option to add relevant files below this.

Adding new assignment in Moodle, assignment name, type and weighting highlighted

Step 5 – Availability settings

Next, there are a range of settings you can alter, starting with t he Availability section , which are explained below:

Allow submissions from – this allows you to set the start date for the assignment, when the students are able to submit work.

Due Date – this allows you to set when the Assignment is due for hand in.

Cut-off date – this is the cut-off for hand - ins. It allows for students to hand in after the due date, but highlights to the marker if there was a late submission. The assignment will not accept submissions or allow edits after this time.

Always show description – if disabled, the Assignment description in the G eneral settings will only be visible to the students on the “allow submission from” date.

Availability settings showing due dates for assignments

Step 6 – Submission types settings

The Submission types section has a range of options below . F or most assignments the default settings will be best .

Submission Types – you may choose between allowing students to submit files (default) or type directly into a text box on Moodle (with word limit).

Maximum number of uploaded files – allows you to set the maximum number of files a student can upload for their submission.

Maximum submission size – change the maximum size of the file students can submit.

Assignment submission types in Moodle, file submission selected

Step 7 – Feedback types settings

The Feedback types section has a range of options to set how you would like to give feedback to students:

Feedback comments - allows you to add comments to each submission.

Annotate PDF - creates a PDF of the students work, allowing comments, drawings and stamps to be placed directly on top of a students work. This is browser based, so no extra software is needed.

Offline grading worksheet - allows for a CSV (comma separated value) file to be downloaded. It should open within Excel and allow the academic to edit the grades and add feedback comments. These can then be uploaded back into Moodle, where it will automatically populate the correct students' grading area.

Feedback files - allows you to upload a file with feedback in and attach to each submission.

Comment inline – if enabled, the submission text will be copied into the feedback comment field during grading, making it easier to comment inline (using a different colour, perhaps) or to edit the original text.

Assignment submission types in Moodle, feedback comments and annotate PDF selected

Step 8 – Submission settings

Under the Submission settings section, you can choose how you want the students to submit the work. Different combinations of these settings allow for different types of assignment:

Require students to click the submit button – if enabled, students will have to click a submit button to declare their work as final. This allows students to keep a draft version of the submission on the system. If the setting is changed from No to Yes after hand-ins have been made, those submissions will be regarded as final.

Require that students accept the submission statement – students must agree to a predefined statement stating the work is their own and does not contain any plagiarism.

Additional attempts – determines how student submission attempts are managed . The available options are:

Never – Only one attempt is permitted.

Manually – A lecturer can manually set specific students to be given a further attempt at submission.

Automatically until pass – Students are automatically given further att empts at submissions until the y achieve the G rade to pass value set in the Grade section for this assignment.

Assignment submission settings in Moodle

Steps 9 - 13

Group submission settings.

The Group submission section has a range of options to select:

Students submit in groups – when enabled, students will be divided into groups based on the default set of groups or a custom grouping. A group submission will be shared among group members and all members of the group will see each others' changes to the submission.

Require all group members submit – if this is enabled, all the members of the group must click the submit button for the submission to be considered. If disabled, the group submission will be considered as submitted as soon as any member of the student group clicks the submit button.

Grouping for student groups – this is the grouping that the assignment will use to find groups for the student groups. If this is not set, the default groups will be used.

Notifications settings

Notify graders about submission s – if this setting is enabled, the grader (usually the lecturer) will receive a message whenever a student submits an assignment. The message methods are configurable.

Notify graders about late submission – if this is enabled, it will email the graders (lecturers) when work is submitted after the due date.

Grade settings

The Grade area allows you to choose the maximum grade available for an assignment . In addition:

The Grading Method allows you to choose a standard grading option: Simple direct gradin g , a Rubric or a Marking Guide. By selecting the Rubric or Marking Guide and then sav ing the Assignment, an option to create the rubric or marking guide will appear. (These will be produced as separate guides.)

Additional settings can be altered to set a pass grade, allow anonymous submissions from students or hide the identity of the grader.

Common module settings

The Common module settings relate to the groups and grouping selection for the Assignment.

Please see the separate online guide on Groups and Groupings for a more detailed explanation.

Restrict access settings

The Restrict access section allows for the overall resource to be hidden or released to a student defined by either a date or grade condition. Click Add restriction to display 5 options:

Activity Completion - require students to complete (or not complete) another activity

Date – prevent access until/or after a specified date / time

Grade – require students to achieve a specific grade on another activity before proceeding

User profile – this section allows you to define access by a user ID, name or a range of other fields that are available for a user to complete

Restriction set – this allows you to add a set of nested restrictions to apply complex logic

For example, you can choose to release the assignment to students on a certain date, but to only those who have ach ie ved a certain grade on a previous assignment.

Additionally, toggling the eye icon to the left-hand side of each restriction allows you to choose to have the resource:

Greyed out when the student can’t access it, so that they can see it but not attempt it.

Completely hidden, until the student has met your set criteria.

When you are finished, click o n ' Save and return to course ' button.

  • Assignment FAQ

New feature in Moodle 2.3! The Assignment upgrade tool is an administrator tool for upgrading old assignment types to the new assignment module for 2.3.

It is recommended that admins upgrade all existing assignments to use the new assignment module as soon as possible, then disable the old assignment module, to avoid the confusion of having two assignment modules.

Note: 'Assignment 2.2' should NOT be disabled until the upgrade process is complete and any courses with the old assignment type have been restored too. If this is going to take some time, the capability mod/assignment:addinstance should be removed from the roles of teacher and manager. In this way, any old assignments will appear and may be used, but teachers will not be able to create any new 'Assignment 2.2' instances.

  • 1 Upgrading assignments
  • 2.1 New grading options
  • 3 Disabling the old assignment module
  • 4 Restoring Assignments (2.2) into a 2.3 site

Upgrading assignments

To upgrade existing assignments to use the new assignment module

  • Go to Settings > Site Administration > Assignment Upgrade Helper .
  • Click List assignments that have not been upgraded to display a list of assignments created in a previous version of Moodle. This page lists the assignments created with an older version of Moodle that have not been upgraded to the new assignment module in Moodle 2.3. Not all assignments can be upgraded - if they were created with a custom assignment subtype, then that subtype will need to be upgraded to the new assignment plugin format in order to complete the upgrade.
  • Select the assignment(s) you wish to upgrade and click the Upgrade selected assignments button in the Batch operations box at the bottom of the screen. Or click the Upgrade all assignments button in the Batch operations box.
  • Confirm by clicking Continue .

A confirmation screen will appear. From here you can view the courses with the converted assignments.

Settings Mapping

The following table maps the settings in the old assignment module to the settings in the new assignment module.

'*'Implies no change in functionality, ie. the equivalent setting will be maintained.

New grading options

Versions of Moodle older than 2.2 did not contain Advanced Grading Methods. Likewise all versions of Moodle older than 2.3 did not contain the Marking Guide type of grading method included in Advanced Grading Methods. Owners of any upgraded assignments may wish to investigate the use of the Advanced Grading Methods feature.

Disabling the old assignment module

Once all existing assignments have been upgraded, the old assignment module can be disabled.

  • Go to Settings > Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Manage activities
  • Hide the Assignments 2.2 module by clicking on the eye in the hide/show column

Teachers will then have only the new assignment module available for selection in the activity chooser.

Restoring Assignments (2.2) into a 2.3 site

Currently, if a course with an old (2.2) type assignment is restored into a 2.3 site which has the old assignment module disabled, it will appear in the restore process but not then appear for the users, causing potential confusion. See the tracker issue here MDL-33952

One temporary workaround if you are going to be restoring courses with old-type assignments is to NOT disable the old assignment module but instead to revoke the capability mod/assignment:addinstance from all users. In this way, the assignment will appear in its original form and may be used, but teachers will not be able to create any new Assignment 2.2 instances.

Creating an assignment

The Turnitin class end date will automatically be set to one month after the course end date in Moodle.

A Turnitin Moodle Direct assignment links an activity in Moodle to an assignment or assignments on Turnitin. Once linked, the activity allows instructors to assess and provide feedback to student's written work, using the assessment tools available within Turnitin's Viewer.

If the administrator did not enable course migration, a course was not migrated, and/or a Moodle course does not exist, instructors will need to contact their Moodle administrator.

Basic assignment options

moodle assignment 2 2 disabled

  • Select the number of parts you would like the assignment to have from the Number of Parts  drop down menu. Each Turnitin assignment in Moodle Direct V2 can have multiple parts associated with it. The student must submit a file to each part to complete the assignment. By default, Moodle will create a one part assignment.
  • Select the Maximum File Size for submissions. Turnitin allows up to 2MB for a text only submission and 100MB for a text and graphic submission. The maximum file size can be adjusted in this setting in line with your requirements.
  • Opt to allow or disallow any file type. By selecting  Yes , submissions will be checked for originality where possible, submissions will be available for download and online grading feedback tools will be available where possible. By selecting No , only file types that allow originality reports to be generated will be accepted.
  • The option to Display Originality Reports to Student provides instructors with the ability to control whether students are allowed to view Originality Reports within each created assignment. Select Yes to allow students to see the Originality Report for the assignment. The default setting is No .
  • Opt to show student grades as fractions or percentages.

We advise you check Set these values as assignment defaults to save time when creating a Turnitin Assignment 2 in the future.

Entering grade information

moodle assignment 2 2 disabled

• If selecting point grading, enter the maximum points for this assignment. The default maximum points is 100.

• Alternatively, if you opt for scale grading, select the scale from the drop-down list.  Click here for guidance on setting up a Moodle grading scale .

  • If available, enter a grade category; this setting controls the category in which this assignment's grades are placed in the grade book.
  • Enter the minimum grade required, which should be less than the maximum point value.

Creating an assignment part

Enter the information for part one of your assignment: your assignment's name, start date, due date, post date, and the maximum marks available for this assignment part. The default maximum point is 100.

Similarity Report options

moodle assignment 2 2 disabled

  • Allow Late submissions after the Due Date: Students have the option to submit work after the assignment due date. Late submissions are always marked as being late and the actual submission date is recorded.

Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed):

  • Similarity Reports for all submissions will be generated immediately.
  • Students cannot resubmit papers.
  • Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission.

Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until due date):

  • Similarity Reports will be generated immediately for each student's initial submission to the assignment.  The first submission and three resubmissions will generate a similarity report instantly. Any subsequent submissions will incur a 24-hour delay between reports generating. Any resubmissions will overwrite the previously uploaded file.
  • Students may resubmit as often as they wish until the assignment due date. However, only the latest submission is available to both the instructor or student. Previous versions are removed.
  • Student submissions will compare against one another within the assignment on only the due date and time, which may result in a change in the similarity score and results at the due date and time. This option is typically used when students are self-reviewing and revising their submissions.
  • Resubmissions after the due date and time of the assignment are not permitted.

Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until due date):

  • Similarity Reports will not be generated for any submission until the due date and time of the assignment.
  • Students may resubmit as many times as needed until the due date and time without receiving reports.
  • Resubmissions after the due date and time of the assignment are not permitted.

The first four submissions will generate a new similarity report instantly. Any subsequent submissions will incur a 24-hour delay between reports generating. Any resubmissions will overwrite the previously uploaded file.

  • Opt to store student papers in the standard repository or no repository. By storing papers in the standard repository, this will allow these papers to be checked against in future. By selecting No repository , submitted papers will not be saved in the Turnitin repository. However, this means that if two students submit the same paper to the same assignment, Turnitin will not find a match.

If you do not select Yes for at least one of the Check against...  options, a Similarity Report will not be generated.

• Bibliography: Text appearing in the bibliography, works cited, and references sections can be excluded.

• Quoted Material: Text appearing in the quotes of student papers can be excluded.

• Small Matches: Matches that are not of sufficient length can be excluded. The number of words or paper percentage to be excluded is determined by yourself and entered into the text box.

This setting can be overridden in individual Similarity Reports.

GradeMark Grading options

GradeMark options allows you to attach a rubric to an assignment. You can do this by selecting a rubric from the dropdown list.

moodle assignment 2 2 disabled

Alternatively, select Launch Rubric Manager to edit or create a rubric.

Moodle groups

The Moodle functionality for managing groups and groupings of students within Moodle courses / activities is fully supported in Moodle Direct. You can find this under Common module settings .

ONLYOFFICE Assign Submission plugin v2.1.0 for Moodle: use documents, spreadsheets and presentations in your assignments

Good news for Moodlers!

We have significantly improved the functionality of our assign submission plugin for the Moodle platform allowing teachers and students to work with documents, spreadsheets and presentations while creating and completing assignments in their Moodle courses. Read this article to learn more.

ONLYOFFICE Assign Submission plugin v2.1.0 for Moodle: use documents, spreadsheets and presentations in your assignments

Docs, sheets and slides in Moodle assignments

The previous version of the ONLYOFFICE Assign Submission plugin for Moodle made it possible to use PDF forms to complete assignments, which was great in general but not enough in some educational scenarios. Following the requests of Moodle users, we updated the plugin to version 2.1.0 allowing teachers and students to work with text documents, spreadsheets and presentations while creating and completing their assignments.

With the updated plugin, teachers have the ability to choose the required document type depending on what they want their students to do when they complete an assignment. For example, if the students have to write an essay on a certain topic, the teacher can choose “ Document ” as the submission format. The “ Presentation ” option works well if the teacher wants their students to create informative slides with images and text. “ Spreadsheet ” seems an ideal choice for assignments which imply data calculations.

The default submission type is “ Form ”, and you can choose another option from the drop-down list when creating a new assignment.

ONLYOFFICE Assign Submission plugin v2.1.0 for Moodle: use documents, spreadsheets and presentations in your assignments

When you choose “ Document ”, “ Spreadsheet ” or “ Presentation ”, your students will be able to open a blank file of the corresponding type, edit it using the functionality of the ONLYOFFICE suite and submit their work for grading. That’s how this plugin works.
