Statement: Women and girls must be at the heart of the fight for climate justice

Gender equality and climate justice are inextricably linked. In any climate crisis, it is women and girls who often face the greatest impacts from environmental degradation and natural disasters – from increased poverty to escalations in gender-based violence. Yet despite creating and leading solutions, they are all too often missing from formal climate leadership, innovation and jobs. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified many of these inequalities.

Gender-responsive climate and environmental action starts with ensuring women have equal access to productive resources, such as finance, land, water and clean energy. It must also support women’s skills-building, advocacy and access to technologies, with disaggregated data to inform planning and action.

Ahead of this month’s Generation Equality Forum in Paris, we have an opportunity to put women and girls at centre stage in the fight for climate justice and a decisive shift towards a greener economy. The Forum’s Action Coalition on Feminist Action for Climate Justice has put together a concrete agenda that includes financing women’s and girls’ climate solutions, supporting the efforts of women – in particular at grassroots and rural levels – to respond to climate crises, and increasing the number of women in climate and environmental leadership and jobs. They are calling on organizations around the world to join them in making commitments to advance women’s climate resilience and leadership.

The coalition’s work envisions a world with equitable access to climate finance, technologies and knowledge, and where the voices and solutions of grassroots and indigenous women are respected and amplified.

This World Environment Day, let’s demand concrete actions that will advance gender equality and combat climate change for a more equal and sustainable world.

World Environment Day Speech for Students

World Environment Day is annually observed on 5th June. The United Nations launched a popular hashtag, #BeatPlasticPollution, which initiated a campaign to find solutions to stop plastic use. On World Environment Day , different organizations are brought together to raise awareness about environmental concerns and work together to achieve collective goals.

Every living, non-living, and even parasite is dependent on the environment. Therefore, protecting the environment is one of the major concerns of developed, developing, and underdeveloped countries. The COP or Conference of Parties is an international treaty or convention, where annual summits are conducted for environmental conservation, such as GFGs reduction, ban on single-use plastics, etc. Today, we will provide you with a ‘World Environment Day’ speech. Good morning teachers and my dear friends. Today, I stand before you to present my World Environment Day speech. World Environment Day is observed every year on 5th June. Our environment is our home, and it is our responsibility to safeguard its health from every challenge standing against it.

Today, we hear news like the loss of biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest, the rise in global temperature, water pollution, the accumulation of plastic waste on beaches, climate change, etc. All of these challenges are the result of our careless and selfish attitude towards the environment. This planet is sustaining on a limited amount of resources and degrading and 

In 2022, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) celebrated its 50th anniversary. 

The 1972 Stockholm Convention was the first major environmental summit, which was named the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. All the participating countries were encouraged to work to meet environmental challenges in all spheres of life. A total of 26 principle issues were put on the table.

After this, several environmental summits were conducted to raise awareness about global environmental conservation and how to meet sustainable development goals. Some of them were the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, the Kyoto Protocol of 1992, the Paris Peace Agreement in 2015, etc.

The objectives of World Environment Day address every issue related to our environmental concerns.

• Environment Day aims to increase public awareness and understanding of environmental issues.
• Encourages everyone to take sustainable steps towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
• It encourages collaboration among countries, organizations, and individuals to work together for the common goal of environmental sustainability.

World Environment Day

The United Nations designated 5 June as World Environment Day to highlight that the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world. The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. 

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics, with the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the  Conference on the Human Environment , or the Stockholm Conference. Later that year, on 15 December, the General Assembly adopted a resolution ( A/RES/2994 (XXVII) ) designating June 5 as World Environment Day and urging "Governments and the organizations in the United Nations system to undertake on that day every year world-wide activities reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness."

"As 2021 marks the beginning of United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, led jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and with which UNESCO is closely associated, the formidable reservoir of experience accumulated in our biosphere reserves will now be of service to the world."

UNESCO has an important track record in advancing ecological sciences through pioneering work on ecosystems, biosphere reserves, capacity building, scientific assessments and policy briefs to assist decision-makers in managing natural resources sustainably. UNESCO mobilizes the knowledge, know-how and practices of local communities and indigenous peoples to support their inclusion in environmental decision-making. Its World Network of Biosphere Reserves demonstrate ways to safeguard natural ecosystems and biodiversity through science, education and participatory approaches while promoting innovative economic development that is environmentally sustainable and socially and culturally appropriate.

With its unique designated sites, UNESCO has been a leader in promoting in-situ solutions to the global challenges of terrestrial, coastal, and marine biodiversity loss.

UNESCO’s strategy for biodiversity is implemented in its designated sites. Over 10 million km², roughly 6% of the earth’s landmass, is already under one or more UNESCO designation, through its 1,121 World Heritage sites (including 252 natural and mixed sites and 114 cultural landscapes), its 714 Biosphere Reserves and its 161 Global Geoparks. UNESCO is also about the soft power to convene diverse interests, unite diverse cultures and emphasize shared human values. UNESCO believes that it is possible to transform mind sets to achieve sufficient momentum to bring change in this critically important  UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration .

Resident Representative Speech on World Environment Day

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am delighted to participate in the celebration of this year’s World Environment Day, which comes at a time when the world is focusing on the impact of climate change affecting our world.

I would like to recognize the Government’s leadership, through the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), in organizing the World Environment Day 2021 activities in Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount and for its continued partnership with UNDP.

On this historic day, the UN will launch the “UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration” (2021 to 2030). The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent.

Today, as we commemorate World Environment Day, we are reminded of the call for urgent action to revive our damaged ecosystems. In this regard, the significance of hosting this meeting at Robertsport is not lost on us— Robertsport has varied and unique ecosystems, including the Lake Piso multi-purpose Reserve, which is the first Ramsar Site in Liberia.

The ecosystems of Robertsport and its surroundings, including the Lake Piso, the Ocean, the mountain forests, and the mangrove vegetations, support life and are very important sources of livelihoods.

These ecosystems are seriously under threats from unsustainable fishing practices, unsustainable harvesting of mangrove vegetations, deforestation, unstainable farming practices, etc.  We need to take positive actions to repair these ecosystems because we all depend on healthy ecosystems for our survival.

Ecosystem restoration is a global undertaking at a massive scale. It means repairing billions of hectares of land so that people have access to food, clean water and jobs; it means bringing back plants and animals from the brink of extinction, from the peaks of mountains to the depths of the sea; it also includes the many small actions everyone can take, every day— growing trees, greening our cities, rewilding our gardens, and cleaning up trash along the rivers and coasts.

These actions to restore Liberia’s ecosystems carry substantial benefits for people— restoration also creates jobs in rural areas where they are most needed. Increasingly, we are seeing countries invest more in restoration activities and strategies, to adapt to the impact of climate change, and to support efforts to mitigate Climate Change.

Ladies and Gentlemen, UNDP is committed to continuing support to the Government and people of Liberia to protect the environment and better manage its natural resources more sustainably.

To date, through our partnership, Liberia ratified the Paris Agreement and developed its first State of the Environment Report . In addition, UNDP has established a Climate Change Early Warning system to provide climate and weather information for Liberia.

We have also created a Graduate programme in Environment and Climate Change Studies at the University of Liberia to support the Government’s efforts to build national capacity to address the country’s environment priorities and challenges. Our Solar-for-Health initiative has improved the delivery of health services in rural health facilities, by providing consistent and clean energy.

We are implementing Coastal defence interventions to reduce the impact of climate change on coastal communities, and Community-based adaptation initiatives to increase resilience to climate change in communities. UNDP’s Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme provides small grants for local non-state actors to address community-based environment priorities. Last, but not least, UNDP trained up to 75 representatives from around Lake Piso on biodiversity conservation. The same group of trainees are involved in the Clean- Up campaign, which UNDP is supporting today.

As our survivals depend on healthy ecosystems, everyone needs to be part of the drive for restoring and protecting Liberia’s ecosystems. Earlier this week, we joined the Youth Environment and Climate Change Action (YECA) Summit and witnessed the dynamism of the youth engaged to guarantee the future of our environment and planet.

Looking forward, I encourage the Government and people of Liberia to continue to take bold actions to protect its ecosystems around the country. For instance, an active Youth brigade in different communities will accelerate Liberia’s efforts to restore the country’s valuable ecosystems.

The number of participants in today’s Clean-Up Campaign and the results show that this  works. We can and should channel the energy and passion of the youth into a more sustained movement for ecosystem restoration and protection in Liberia. A Youth Brigade for the Environment is that sustained movement that is needed!

I wish to conclude by reiterating the UN Secretary- General’s global call to action. Let us work together and strengthen our efforts to reverse the damage we have done. Let us take urgent and sustained actions to restore and protect Liberia’s ecosystems. Together, we can replant and protect our forests.  We can clean up our rivers and seas.  And we can green our cities.  We will only succeed if everyone plays a part.

When I was talking to our farmer friends, they were explaining in a lucid way how they are easily adopting the systems related to bio-fuel. It reflected confidence. It is natural that the agriculture sector of the country gets a huge benefit from the massive clean energy campaign that is currently underway in the country. On the occasion of World Environment Day, India has taken another major step. Today I have the privilege of releasing a detailed roadmap for the development of the ethanol sector. The ambitious E-100 pilot project for the production and distribution of ethanol across the country has also been launched in Pune. I congratulate the people of Pune and the Mayor of Pune. I wish all the very best that we are able to achieve our targets on time.

Ethanol was rarely discussed in the country about 7-8 years ago. No one even talked about it. And even if it was, it was in a casual manner. But now ethanol has become one of the major priorities of 21st century India. The focus on ethanol is having a better impact on the environment as well as on the lives of farmers. We have resolved to meet the target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by 2025. When we first thought about the target, it was decided to achieve the target by 2030. But in view of the successes in the recent past, public support, awareness among people and the realization of its importance by everybody, we have now decided to meet the target by 2025, five years before the original target.

The courage to take such a big decision is due to the goals the country has achieved in the last 7 years, the efforts the country has made, and the success it has achieved. Till 2014, on an average, only 1.5 percent of ethanol could be blended in India which has now reached about 8.5 percent. In 2013-14, about 38 crore liters of ethanol were purchased in the country. Now it is estimated to be more than 320 crore liters, i.e., the purchase of ethanol by almost eight times. Last year alone, oil marketing companies bought ethanol worth about Rs 21,000 crore. A large part of this 21,000 crore rupees has gone to the pockets of the country’s farmers. It has especially benefitted the sugarcane farmers. When 20 percent ethanol will start blending in petrol by 2025, you can imagine the huge amount of money farmers will get directly from oil companies. It will help in mitigating the challenges associated with over-production of sugar. Sometimes, there is no buyer in the world due to higher yields and the prices also crash in the country. Then there is a big challenge where to store it. Mitigating all such challenges will benefit the sugarcane farmers directly.

The 21st century India can get energy only from the modern thinking and modern policies of the 21st century. With this thinking, the government is continuously taking policy decisions in every field. A lot of emphasis is being laid on building the necessary infrastructure for the production and purchase of ethanol in the country. So far, most of the ethanol manufacturing units were concentrated in 4-5 states where sugar production is high. Now Food Grain Based Distilleries are being established to use the rotten grain and expand this to the whole country. Modern technology based plants are also being set up in the country to make ethanol from agricultural waste.

India has emerged as a ray of hope in the global efforts to tackle the menace of climate change. Today, India has made its mark as a trusted partner for the welfare of mankind. The world once used to see India as a challenge to climate change because of its huge population. Today the situation has changed. Today our country is emerging as the leader of climate justice and is a big force against a formidable crisis. India is moving ahead with a lofty global vision like the founding of International Solar Alliance for realizing the vision of One Sun, One World, One Grid and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure initiative. India has established itself as the top 10 countries of the world in the Climate Change Performance Index.

India is aware of the challenges that are being faced due to climate change and is also working actively. While on the one hand, we are sensitive towards energy justice in the Global South and advocate for the responsibilities of Global North, on the other hand, we are also discharging our role with utmost seriousness. India has chosen a path of energy transition in which both hard and soft components are equally important in our policies and decisions. If I talk about hard components, the world is watching very closely India’s unprecedented speed to implement the big goals. Our capacity for renewable energy has increased by more than 250 percent in the last 6-7 years. India is today among the top 5 countries of the world in terms of installed renewable energy capacity. Importantly, the capacity of solar energy has increased by about 15 times in the last 6 years. Today India is building the world’s largest solar and hybrid energy park in the Kutch desert of Gujarat, and has also closed 14 GW of old coal plants. The country has also taken historic steps with a soft approach. Today the common man of the country has joined the pro-environment campaign and he is leading it.

We can see how awareness has been created regarding single use plastic. People are also trying a little bit in their own way. Still more needs to be done. Look at the cleanliness of our beaches, youth are taking initiative. Or be it a campaign like Swachh Bharat, the common citizens of the country took it upon as their responsibility and have taken it forward today. Distributing more than 37 crore LED bulbs and more than 23 lakh energy efficient fans has impacted the environment protection and people have forgotten to even discuss it. But it should be a subject of a major discussion. Similarly, crores of people’s dependence on wood has greatly reduced after they were provided free gas connections under the Ujjwala scheme and electricity connections under the Saubhagya scheme. Earlier, they had to spend their life in smoke by burning wood in the kitchens. Apart from reducing pollution, it has helped a lot in improving the health of our mothers and children and strengthening environmental protection. But this too is not discussed much. India has prevented the emission of millions of tons of carbon dioxide through these efforts and has made India a leader in the direction of climate change mitigation. Similarly, the country is preventing millions of tons of carbon dioxide from dissolving in the air today by setting up more than three lakh energy efficient pumps.

India is setting an example to the world that it is not necessary to halt developmental works for protecting the environment. Both economy and ecology can go together and move forward. And this is the path India has chosen. Along with strengthening the economy, our forest cover has also increased by 15,000 square kilometers in the last few years. The number of tigers in our country has doubled and the number of leopards has also increased by about 60 percent in the last few years. Amidst all this, the Wildlife Friendly Corridor in Pench National Park is also a topic of discussion today.

The Clean and Efficient Energy Systems, Resilient Urban Infrastructure and Planned Eco-Restoration are a very important part of the AatmaNirbhar Bharat Campaign. Be it highway-expressways with green cover, solar powered metros, focus on electric vehicles, or promotion of research on hydrogen-powered vehicles, all these are being worked out with a detailed strategy. New investment opportunities are being created in the country and lakhs of youth are also getting employment due to environment-related efforts.

The general belief is that air pollution spreads only through industry. But the fact is that many factors like transportation, unclean fuels and diesel generators contribute to air pollution in some way or the other. Therefore, India is working with a holistic approach through the National Clean Air Plan in all these directions. The ongoing work on waterways and multimodal connectivity will not only strengthen the mission of green transport, but also improve the logistics efficiency of the country. Creation of CNG based infrastructure in hundreds of districts of the country and modern systems like FASTag are helping a lot in reducing pollution. Today, the service of metro rail in the country has increased from 5 cities to 18 cities. The suburban railway project has also helped in reducing the use of personal vehicles.

A large part of the country’s railway network has been electrified. Solar power based airports are also being built rapidly. Before 2014, only 7 airports had a solar power facility, whereas today this number has increased to more than 50. More than 80 airports have been installed with LED lights. I would like to give another example related to future preparations.

The Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest monument of Sardar Vallabhbhai, has been built in Gujarat. Work is also underway to develop the beautiful Kevadiya city as an electric vehicle city, where the Statue of Unity is located. In future, only battery based buses, two-wheelers and four-wheelers will run in Kevadiya. For this, necessary infrastructure will also be made available there.

The water cycle is also directly related to climate change and imbalance in the water cycle also directly affects water security. The work that is being done regarding water security in the country has never been done before. The work is being done with a holistic approach from creation and conservation to use of water resources in the country. Jal Jeevan Mission is also a great medium for this. And I would like to remind you that this time a program is going on in the Jal Jeevan Mission in which I need the help of the citizens of the country. That is, save the rain water, catch the rain water.

In about 7 decades, piped water reached about 30 million rural households in the country, while in less than two years more than 40 million households have been provided tap water. Therefore, India’s efforts are also increasing regarding the efficiency of its resources. In the circular economy that is being talked about today, the focus is on such products and processes, in which there is least pressure on resources. The government has identified 11 sectors which can make good use of resources by recycling them through modern technology. A lot of work has been done in the last few years on the Kachra to Kanchan (Waste to Wealth) campaign and now it is being taken forward very fast in mission mode. Be it waste from households and farms, scrap metal or lithium ion batteries, recycling is being encouraged through new technology in many such areas. Action plan related to this, which will have all aspects related to regulatory and development, will be implemented in the coming months.

It is very important to organize our efforts to protect the climate and environment. We will be able to give a safe environment to our coming generations only when every citizen of the country makes a united effort to maintain the balance of water, air and land. It was the wish of our forefathers and they have left behind a very important message for us. The UN Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day(WED) in 1972. Established in 1970 in the US, the annual event brings together millions of people from around the world in support of the environment, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our planet.

Earth Day 2024 comes as a worrying new report found that global concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—the top three heat-trapping gases—reached a record high again in 2023. Meanwhile, a separate study found that Antarctica saw an astonishing rise of 38.5 degrees Celsius above its average seasonal temperature back in 2022, leading to major concerns about the alarming rate at which global warming is affecting our planet.

What is Earth Day?

Marked by millions around the world, Earth Day is an annual event designed to shine a light on the serious environmental problems we’re facing, from the climate crisis to air pollution and deforestation.

When is Earth Day 2024?

Earth Day takes place on April 22 every year, but the entire month of April (sometimes called Earth Month)—and especially the week running up to Earth Day (sometimes called Earth Week)—is a time when environmental issues take center stage.

Why is Earth Day on April 22?

Earth Day was the brainchild of US senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson, following a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California . He came up with the idea of having college teach-ins to highlight the importance of clean air and water, with April 22 chosen as a convenient date between Spring Break and finals.

Organizers decided to name the date Earth Day , with the first event in 1970 leading to an astonishing 20 million people across the US taking to the streets—around 10 percent of the country’s population at the time. The event undoubtedly had a major impact, with President Richard Nixon creating the Environmental Protection Agency just months later in December 1970, as well as signing the Clean Air Act.

Earth Day later became an international campaign in 1990, when environmental activists asked one of the original organizers, Denis Hayes , to help create another event to spotlight the ecological challenges facing our planet.
