How it works

Dogs and cats have several similarities, but even more distinctions. Both animals are easily loved by mankind and will display love and affection in return for good treatment. Some people enjoy the presence of a cat, and others are simply dog lovers. Based on the history, characteristics, and similarities of the two creatures, dogs are considered to be man’s best friend- but most likely it’s the feline who is.

Thousands of years ago, a man trapped wolves and used a selective breeding process to make canines with certain qualities.

Some of the qualities include hunting abilities, obedience, and trainability. Every dog in our modern world has the DNA of wolves, although if you look at a Yorkshire Terrier or a Teacup Chihuahua one would have their doubts. Throughout time, breeding became more selective, and more breeds were born. Humans began breeding dogs for their function. Some canines were great for hunting, while others did the best job of herding or guarding. Canines can show more human characteristics such as love, sorrow, and loyalty. Dogs are also more social than cats which is why some consider them the best companions.

Felines, on the other hand, decided on their own that they would integrate with humans. The Egyptians considered cats to be Gods, due to them protecting their homes from death and disease by killing rodents. The Egyptians thought so highly of their beloved felines that they mummified them for the journey to the next world- and even included mummified mice to accompany their pets. In the middle ages, Pope Gregory IX associated cats with Satan and witches. The accusation led to the massacre of millions of cats across Europe. After the massacre, there were no cats to kill rodents and this caused an outbreak of black rats which brought on the Black Death.

Cats are more independent than dogs and are considered loners. Felines only seek companionship from other cats when mating. They enjoy spending time away from humans and do not get lonely, whereas a dog would. All cats today still harbor the same traits as their ancestors because they were not bred into exclusivity, they were perfect just how they were. Cats are nocturnal and do the best hunting at night solitary. They have a long tail that aids in balance, and light-reflecting eyes which gives them an advantage over their prey. Cats are quick and have retracting claws for self-defense, they can jump and climb to get away from any threats. Dogs are more earthbound and not able to jump as high or climb trees such as cats. Canines hunt more efficiently when they are accompanied by their pack. While both species are carnivores, dogs can survive on plant materials if needed but cats are strict meat-eaters. All cats are considered equal and do not have ranks to determine their social status. Dogs have a particular social status, their rank is determined by how high they hold their tail. When one dog greets another and that dog holds its tail up, it means they are of higher social class. Cats only hold their tail up as a sign of content, they do not feel the need to dominate.

Aside from the numerous differences, there is also a good deal of similarities. Both canine and feline are part of the Mammalia Kingdom. Both dogs and cats birth multiple offspring at one time. The mother carries 3-12 babies in one litter. A characteristic of the female in the Mammalia Kingdom is that they have mammary glads, which allows the mothers to nurse their young. Both canines and felines are covered in fur and can carry fleas and ticks if not treated by the owner. The lifespan of these two creatures ranges an average of twelve years, and up to twenty-five for cats and eighteen for dogs. Both cats and dogs show territorial instincts that come naturally. The canine and feline alike have the ability to survive in the wild if needed, their natural hunting instinct would employ before being left to starve to death.

Some people may think more profoundly of cats due to the felines’ intelligence, while others fancy dogs for their companionship. A cat does not need your love, food, or acceptance. Felines are the ultimate hunters and voluntarily gave up their life in the wild to save man from rodent infestations and the plague, and cats know it.

Cat vs. Dog

Cat

Cats and dogs are the most popular pets in the world. Cats are more independent and are generally cheaper and less demanding pets. Dogs are loyal and obedient but require more attention and exercise, including regular walks.

Comparison chart

How to choose.

When choosing between a cat or a dog, you should consider how much time you can dedicate to the pet (dogs require more time than cats, and don’t like to be left home alone), how much you can afford to spend (dogs are more expensive than cats), and what temperament of pet you would before (dogs are more needy and affectionate than independent cats).

A dog petting a cat

When choosing a cat, consider whether you want to get a purebred cat from a breeder, or rescue a cat from an animal shelter. If you are not getting a kitten, consider whether you want an indoor or an outdoor cat and choose accordingly, as certain cats will be trained for different situations. Different breeds have different temperaments, but they vary less than dogs. For example, Siamese cats are intelligent and playful, but can be very noisy, while long-haired cats are laid back and short haired cats are usually affectionate and even-tempered. Individual cats also have different personalities, so interact with them before taking them home. Consider the hair length you can handle, as longer fur , such as the fur of a Maine Coon, Persian or Ragdoll, will require daily brushing.

When choosing a dog, consider its size. Larger dogs, such as a German Shepherd or a Labrador, need more space and cost more to feed and care for. Some breeds, such as Labradors, Corgis and Spaniels, are also easier to train than others, and have more friendly temperaments. Take into account the length of the dog’s fur, as those with longer coats will need more regular grooming. Although purebreds are popular, they can suffer from greater temperament and health problems. Mixed breed dogs usually have fewer health problems and can be adopted more cheaply from shelters.

Cats require a food and water bowl, a litter box, a few toys and scratching posts, and a brush for grooming.

Dogs require a food and water bowl, a leash and collar, a dog bed, toys and chews and treats.

The amount a cat needs to eat varies depending on its size, but cats require less food than most all dogs. Cat food comes in dry or canned wet form . Adult cats require between 250 and 300 calories per day.

The amount a dog eats depends on its size. Commercial dog food comes in both dry and wet forms, and most dogs need between 25 and 30 calories per pound per day.

Cats do not need bathing, but they should be brushed regularly if they have long hair.

Dogs –especially those with long hair – need grooming and bathing frequently .

Both cats and dogs can get infected with ticks, lice , fleas and other pests . When this happens, disinfectants like Frontline or Advantix are required to rid the pets of the infection. Some of these chemicals contain harmful pesticides. Care must also be taken to ensure Advantix is used only on dogs because it is very dangerous for cats.

The average life expectancy of cats is around 12 to 14 years, but they can live into their 20s or even their 30s. Medical costs for cats are around $160 per year.

The life expectancy of dogs — usually 7 to 14 years — varies depending on the breed, with larger breeds tending to have shorter lives, akin to the lifespan of wolves . The oldest dog was 29 years old. Medical costs for dogs vary depending on size and existing health conditions but will usually be at least $200 for dental cleanings and vaccines.

House Training

Cats usually already know how to use a litterbox or can easily be trained to use their litterbox. This requires cleaning once a day.

Dogs need to be trained, socialized and housebroken. Training usually takes around 2 months.

Dogs can function as watchdogs or guard dogs, protecting their owner and the house.

Cats can live in smaller areas, while dogs generally need more space to run around. Cats can be kept indoors, but dogs need to be taken for regular walks – at least twice a day.

Although some cats will learn to do tricks, they do them to please themselves, not their owners, and so are more difficult to train.

Most dogs can be trained to do some tricks with patience.

As dogs need more personal attention than cats, they are less well suited to people who travel a lot or work long hours. Dogs should preferably not be left home alone all day, while cats will cope.

According to the ASPCA, a typical cat costs $670 per year, including food, litter and medical costs.

A small dog cost approximately $580, while a medium sized dog costs $695 and a large dog costs $875.

Popular breeds

The most popular cat breeds in the US are the Persian, the Maine Coon, the Exotic and the Siamese.

The most popular breeds of dog in the US are Labrador Retriever (with over 123,000 registered individuals), Yorkshire Terrier (48,346), German Shepherd (43,629) and Golden Retriever (42,962).

According to US census data, there are around 86.4 million pet cats in the US. 33% of households in the US own at least one cat. On average, cat owners have two cats. [1]

There are approximately 78.2 million pet dogs in the US. 39% of US households own at least one dog. On average, dog owners have one dog. [2]

AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association ) statistics are slightly different — about 74 million cats and 70 million dogs. Dogs are found in more American households than cats but cat-owners tend to own a larger number of cats on average and so the over all population is larger for cats than dogs.

Common Games

Cats enjoy simple games that allow them to stalk and pounce. Popular games include bouncing a ping-pong ball on the floor for the cat to jump after, rolling a crumpled ball of paper along the floor, dragging ribbon along the floor, or playing hide and seek.

Dogs enjoy games that allow them to run and chase. As well as playing “fetch,” dogs enjoy playing tug-of-war, hide and seek, find the treat, and running races.

Dogs vs Cats Compare and Contrast Essay

Dogs vs cats comparison.

cats and dogs

Dogs used to live in a pack in the free wild, thus, they require to be with the pack in captivity, therefore they consider you and your family to be their brood. In the wild the dogs hunt in a company of their kind, and love to outnumber their prey. Dogs are usually extremely playful and want to have a job to do. Dogs love to be petted, and can sit on your lap for hours. Dogs are active during the day and sleep at nights. Dogs are extremely “communicative” and use their body language and barking to express their feelings.

Cats, on the other hand, usually hunt on their own, and do not need any company. Certainly they can live together, although they do not require to be with one another or with anyone else. Usually cats do not want to sit with you, and some of them dislike being held. Cats are active at night, and can sleep all day long. Cats can meow, but they are definitely not as noisy as dogs, and much less expressive with their body language.

Thus, both cats and dogs bring…

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Cats Vs Dogs

Introduction to cats and dogs.

Cats and dogs are two of the most loved pets around the world. They are very different in many ways. People often choose one or the other based on their personalities and lifestyles.

Personality Traits

Cats are known for being independent and calm. They usually take care of themselves. Dogs are more social and often need more attention and time from their owners.

Care and Needs

Dogs need daily walks and playtime, which makes them great for active people. Cats are more relaxed and can be happy living indoors, making them good for quieter homes.

Training and Intelligence

Dogs can be trained to do many tasks and tricks. Cats can also be trained but they tend to do things their own way.

Both cats and dogs can be loving companions. The choice between them depends on what kind of pet fits better with your life.

250 Words Essay on Cats Vs Dogs

Pets like cats and dogs are loved by many people. They can be great friends and bring joy to families. Cats and dogs are different in many ways, from how they act to what they need from their owners.

Caring for Cats

Cats are known for being independent. They can often take care of themselves and don’t always need people around. Cats clean themselves, don’t need to go outside to use the bathroom, and are usually quiet. They are good for people who work a lot or have a small living space.

Caring for Dogs

Dogs are more like loyal friends who need attention and love. They need to go on walks and play outside. This means they are great for active people. Dogs also need to be trained so they know how to behave well.

Playing with Pets

Cats love to play with small toys or chase a light from a laser pointer. They can play alone or with their owners. Dogs often want to play games like fetch or tug-of-war with their owners. They usually need more time and space to play than cats.

The Bond with Humans

Cats can be loving, but they might not always show it. They may sit on your lap when they want to be close. Dogs often show love by wagging their tails, licking, and staying close to their owners.

In the end, whether a cat or a dog is better depends on what a person likes and how much time they can spend with their pet. Both can be great friends and bring happiness to their owners.

500 Words Essay on Cats Vs Dogs

When it comes to choosing a pet, cats and dogs are the most popular options. Some people prefer cats, while others are true dog lovers. Both animals make great companions but in different ways. This essay will compare cats and dogs, looking at their behavior, care needs, and how they interact with people.

Personality Differences

Cats are often seen as independent and mysterious. They usually do their own thing and might not always want attention. Cats can be playful, but they also enjoy their alone time. On the other hand, dogs are known for being friendly and loyal. They love to be around people and often want to play or go for walks. Dogs are also known to protect their homes and families.

Caring for Cats and Dogs

Taking care of a cat or dog requires time, money, and love. Cats are generally easier to care for because they use a litter box inside the house. They also groom themselves, so they don’t need baths as often as dogs. Cats need to be fed, have their litter box cleaned, and get regular check-ups at the vet.

Dogs need more attention compared to cats. They have to be taken outside several times a day to use the bathroom and get exercise. Dogs also need to be trained so they know how to behave, and they should be bathed regularly. Like cats, dogs need to be fed and taken to the vet for check-ups and shots.

Space Needs

Cats don’t need a lot of space. They are happy living in small apartments as long as they have windows to look out of and toys to play with. Dogs, especially big ones, need more room to move around. They do best in homes with a yard or near a park where they can run and play.

Bonding with People

Cats can form strong bonds with their owners, but they often show their love in quiet ways, like sitting on your lap or sleeping near you. Dogs show their love more openly by licking, wagging their tails, and following their owners around. Both cats and dogs can sense how their owners feel and will try to comfort them when they are sad or sick.

Cats can be trained to do simple things like use a scratching post or come when called, but they are not as interested in learning tricks as dogs. Dogs can be trained to do many things, from basic commands like sit and stay to more complex tasks like guiding the blind. Both animals are smart in their own ways, but dogs are usually more eager to please their owners.

In the end, whether a cat or a dog is the better pet depends on the person’s lifestyle and what they want in a companion. Cats are great for people who want a more low-maintenance pet that is independent. Dogs are good for those who want an active friend and have the time to train and care for them. Both cats and dogs can bring a lot of joy and love into a home. It’s important to think about what pet fits best with your life before making the choice.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Compare and Contrast Essay: Cats vs. Dogs

What is your favorite type of pet? In my opinion dogs make greater pets, due to the fact that they tend to be more loyal and loving. Just to name a few, here are some of the reasons that I feel that dogs are better than cats. They will always give 110% to please there owners. They have absolute unconditional love. Dogs can be easier to train than their feline counterparts. Moreover,  dogs make great life long companions, that fill our heart with joy and memories for years to come. By the end of this article you too might see why dogs make greater better pets than cats.

Have you ever noticed how dogs are willing to go the extra mile to make us happy? This is because they will give 110% of what it takes to please us. Throughout history, many dogs, of many different breeds have been utilized in various ways in the assistance of chores. Dogs are known for being extremely loyal companions. Certain breeds of pooches may have been selected for guaranteed competitiveness. Along with being people-pleasers, dogs can too be exceptionally caring and adoring pets.

Their love is without a doubt an unconditional bond. In my experience, it is a dog’s instinct to be caring. Just as they nurture their young, they show their owners the same love in return. Dogs reflect on the way that their owners treat them and this provides them with a way to learn how to love their owners. Dogs can be very quick learners. They learn good behaviors through gentle tones and rewards when they have demonstrated the proper behavior as expected. Rewards are a way to show love to your dog for their hard work and loyalty to you. As part of rewarding good behavior, making rules and setting boundaries can be a great way to teach your dog what you expect of them. I know I just can't help myself when I see your big ole eyes staring at me like I'm someone special, which melts my heart.

Training dogs isn't always easy, is it? Depending on the dog sometimes it can be difficult but with patience and persistence training a dog can be easier than you might think. Dogs are people pleasers and rely on the owners for instructions, unlike cats who are more independent creatures, dogs are willing to take on the task that their owners expect of them. Teaching routines with similar patterns can be very beneficial to not only the dog but also the owner too, in learning how to teach and train their dog most efficiently. Rewarding good behaviors can aid in teaching the dog the proper actions of which are expected. Given the right training and teaching you could see why dogs are so much better than cats hands down. All this training and teaching over time, can turn into one of the best companionships we may ever know as humans.

Dogs may not live as long as we do, but they sure do make many years with them that mmuch more enjoyable. Having a dog as a companion can be so rewarding on its own throughout the years. After all, iisisn’t that why they call a dog "Man's Best friend". In my lifetime, I've been very blessed withisn’t dogs in the last 30 years, all of which I considered very good friends. Some of the dogs I had were even better than I felt I deserved in a lifetime. Being loyal, caring, compassionate, and such a great companion, in general, are all great reasons why I feel dogs make better pets than their counterparts the cat.

In summary, I have listed many reasons why I feel that dogs are better pets than cats, in my opinion, they are more loyal, loving, compassionate, and all-around make better companions due to their willingness to please their owners. I hope that you too can see why I feel that cats just don’t hold up to the praise of the dogs we have come to know and love in our lives. Even though cats can be more independent they just miss some of the important qualities that dogs bring us.

Free Domesticated Cat and Dog Comparison Essay Sample

A cat and a dog are both domesticated animals, even though they do not belong to the same family or species. The cat belongs to the feline family, while the dog belongs to the canine family. There are various similarities, as well as differences, between the cat and the dog. One of the similarities is that both animals are domestic and belong to the same kingdom and division. The differences between the cat and the dog can be analyzed in terms of behavior, physical appearance, biological composition, nature and character among others.

Similarities

The dogs and the cats are domesticated mammals with fur or hairs, teeth and four legs. These two pets were originally belonging to the carnivore order. The two animals are good friends of human beings, so they were easily domesticated.  It is easy to train these pets; however it is easier to train the dogs to perform the basic commands. The two pets require love and affection from their owners. Both pets rely on flesh and cereals for food, give birth to multiple offspring at once and suckle their younger ones.

Differences

Despite the similarities mentioned above, there are many differences between the cat and the dog. First of all, the dogs are more affectionate. They like playing around with people trying to please them,  unlike the cats, which rarely play with people; even if they do, it is just for pleasing themselves. While the dog can wag its tail, or even the whole body, to show its love for the master, a cat can only show its love by walking closer and allow people to scratch behind its ears. This attribute of dogs makes it easy for man to train them to obey and remember the basic commands.

It is very important to note that despite the fact that both animals are domesticated, cats are lone rangers while dogs are pack animals. This means that while the cat enjoys walking alone, the dog likes walking in the company of other dogs. This attribute contributes towards the level of interaction between the two animals. The dog is, therefore, considered an animal of higher social class, and it is friendly to other dogs.

We can use the sound produced by these two animals as the distinction between them. It is beyond reasonable doubt that the two pets produce different sounds. The dogs bark, woof and growl, while the cats usually meow. Any person who has ever domesticated these pets can easily distinguish the cat from the dog by their sounds, without seeing them. It is also important to note that the sound produced by the dog is of higher intensity compared to that of the cat.

The dogs need a lot of space, because most of them are huge and like playing with each other, while the cats are completely satisfied with little space. The dogs are usually more playful compared to cats, which are more quiet and slowly. The other fact is that the dogs of special species can even be used in hunting or as a workforce and be very helpful for people. The cats are considered to be a little bit lazy and selfish animals.

The dogs are very dependent on human beings unlike the cats which are more independent. Cats are good hunters of birds, rats and mice for food but they also depend on human beings who feed them. It is important to note a very interesting fact that female cats would hunt and bring food to the kittens apart from breast feeding, while female dogs only breast feed their puppies. Despite the fact that the dogs can also hunt by chasing the prey, they need people to take care of them.

The dogs are very alert and usually feel happy to be woken by their masters, while the cats do not like being troubled, and especially, woken up. This alert character of the dogs makes them good friends and bodyguards, especially at night since they scare away intruders, while the cats can only run away for their safety.

The dogs can tolerate lack of food for much longer period than the cats, since dogs are better at using their fat reserves. The cats, on the other hand, have to be fed regularly, because their fat reserves are not burnt efficiently and cannot be used as a source of energy; this leads to the process of breaking down of non-fatty tissues for energy, when there is not enough food for the cat. This action puts the liver of the cat at risk of the disease called hepatic lipidosis.

The dogs and the cats are domesticated mammals of the carnivore order. Both animals are good friends of man, despite of the fact that these two animals differ in many ways. The dogs can easily scare intruders away, while the cats are not considered to be good bodyguards. The dogs are more friendly and affectionate compared to cats. Cats are more independent compared to dogs which highly depend on people who take care of them. The cats are usually happy with little space, while the dogs need a lot of space to run around and play. The dogs are pack animals since they enjoy the company of other dogs, while the cats are lone rangers. The dogs and the cats differ greatly from each other in terms of behavior, nature, physical appearance and even character.

Compare and contrast dog and cat essay sample

Cats and dogs have been living with humans for ages. They both make good companions but are not the same in so many aspects. That’s why it’s advisable to conduct in-depth research to know more about a pet before buying one. Knowing their traits will help you decide whether having one in your home is a wise decision.

So, the compare and contrast dog and cat essay is an eye-opener for wannabe pet owners. But to the writer or student, it’s basically to earn marks. Also, whether you are looking for how to write or need writing help to deliver a top-notch paper on the said topic, this post is for you.

The similarities that exist between dogs and cats

  • Domestication

Pets like dogs and cats were domesticated by humans hundreds of years ago. They both can live with humans peacefully and offer several benefits besides being a companion. For instance, the cat is known for keeping rodents at bay. Dogs, on the other hand, when matured, can help to prevent intruders or protect the owner from attack.

It’s also possible to train dogs and cats. But it’s advisable to start teaching them from a tender age. Both animals can be trained to sit down, display different signs, or obey specific commands.

  • Maintenance

Dogs and cats require regular care besides offering them balanced nutrition. The ones with fur need regular bathing to keep fleas at bay. Dogs and cats with coat also shed their hairs. So, the owner still needs to do some general cleaning, which covers the living area of the pet and the entire house.

The differences that exist between dogs and cats

  • Relationship with the owner

It’s hard to see cat owners walk down the road with their cats by their side. But the same cannot be said of dogs. Dogs enjoy playing with their owners and are super active during the day. They also sleep at night when their owner is at sleep, which makes them a wonderful companion.

But cats are the opposite. They can sleep all day long but become super active at night. They can live comfortably in the absence of their owner, provided there is feed to fill their stomachs.

  • The emotional side

Dogs are more emotional than cats. Cats can live without worries for days in the absence of their owners. But dogs quickly show signs of boredom when they can’t find their owners after a while.

In a nutshell, both animals make great pets. But looking at their similarities and differences, it is evident that dogs tend to require more attention than cats. Hence, cats are more compatible with super busy individuals. But dogs need the company of their owners all the time. So they require much attention.
