The 'I Understood The Assignment' TikTok Audio Explained

A social media trend has reached peak popularity whenever brands start participating in it; by the time junior creatives and social media interns finish pitching and explaining a trend for approval, it's probably already been seen on every platform. So, with that in mind, it should be easy to backtrack the timeline of a trend to learn more about it when a brand joins in on the fun. One glaring exception is the Duolingo Owl — that's one up-to-date bird.

McDonalds' "I understood the assignment" era on Twitter began in the second half of 2021. So did  Starbucks '. With a calculation based on conjecture, the trend can be traced back to the beginning of 2021. We looked to Know Your Meme for confirmation, and it turns out we were right. This is what high school teachers meant when they said that we'd use math after graduating.

This particular phrase has garnered extreme attention across all social media platforms. On TikTok , videos submitted under the "I understood the assignment" hashtag have received more than 600 million views; an excess of 30,000 posts wear it on Instagram . But what does it mean? And why is there an entire song dedicated to it? Read on to learn more.

The 'I understood the assignment' trend has been used by celebrities

How was the "I understood the assignment" trend created? In March 2021, a Twitter user @thering26 posted stills of Uma Thurman in numerous acting roles. "Uma Thurman will always understand the assignment," the accompanying text read. Soon, the phrase and meme format spread across Twitter like wildfire; it is used to describe someone who knows how to get the job done (via Know Your Meme ). The meme format is particularly popular for talking about actors who can pull off very different roles with top-notch acting.

A few months later, artist Tay Money put a new spin on the trend. She released a song that claimed she understood " The Assignment ." The artist herself used a part of the song that said "I understood the assignment" on TikTok. This led to a trend of people posting accomplishments and stories that proved that they knew what was expected of them and went above and beyond (via Know Your Meme ). 

Even celebrities hopped on the trend. Taylor Swift used it to promote "All Too Well" (via YouTube ) and basically immortalized the phrase. There are currently around 250 million views on the "the assignment" hashtag on TikTok . It also led to the creation of another relatable sound that remixes Tay Money's song with Reese Witherspoon in "Legally Blonde" saying, " Actually, I wasn't aware that we had an assignment ." And that's how one meme took over the internet.

Kentucky Derby post positions: Most wins from each spot at Churchill Downs starting gate

Over the course of an exhilarating two minutes on Saturday, horses will jockey (no pun intended) for position over 1 1/4 miles of Kentucky dirt, with the winner of that frenetic sprint earning a place in history as the champion of the world’s most storied race.

The winner of the 2024 Kentucky Derby , though, won’t just be determined by whoever crosses the finish line first at Churchill Downs . Historically speaking, it will be influenced by where the winning horse began the race.

Among the dozens of factors that go into prognosticating the Run for the Roses is the race’s post position — that is, where on the track’s 20-horse starting gate each competitor is before they take off.

For those who closely follow the sport and try to correctly bet on the winner of the race, last Saturday’s Kentucky Derby post position draw was an event of significant interest. Where a horse starts the race doesn’t foretell whether they’ll win it. But based on nearly a century’s worth of results, it can prevent even a top contender from galloping into the famed Winner’s Circle.

To get a better sense of what horses might be well-positioned to win the 2024 Derby, here’s a look at post positions of previous winners since the starting gate was first used in 1930, how many winners have come from each post position and more:

Kentucky Derby best post position

Post position No. 5 has produced the most Derby winners, with 10 wins in 94 starts, along with eight second-place finishes and four third-place showings.

The last winner from the No. 5 post position came in 2017, when Always Dreaming came in first by 2 3/4 lengths. For all of its historic success, however, the post position hasn’t had a top-three finisher since Audible came in third in 2018.

This year, Catalytic will occupy the No. 5 post position, though the horse isn’t among the race’s favorites. As of Thursday morning, Catalytic was at 42-1 odds to win.

Kentucky Derby wins by post position

While the No. 5 post position has been the home to the most Derby winners, it doesn’t hold that distinction by a wide margin.

Post position Nos. 8 and 10 have each produced nine Derby winners, just one behind the lead. Mage, the 2023 Derby champion, came out of No. 8. Post position Nos. 1 and 7 have each been home to eight Derby victors.

Beyond post position No. 10, a horse’s chances of winning the Derby decrease noticeably. Only one gate from Nos. 11 through 20 has produced more than five Derby winners, while six of those 10 spots have been home to two or fewer champions, including post position No. 17, which has never been the starting spot for a Derby winner.

'It's gonna be May' meme is back: Origins, what it means and why you'll see it on your feed

The calendar flips from April to May on Wednesday, meaning social media users will almost certainly see " It's gonna be May " memes featuring singer Justin Timberlake in the coming days.

The meme stems from NSYNC's 2000 smash hit "It's Gonna Be Me." When singing the titular line in the song, Justin Timberlake annunciates the word "me" as "May."

According to a 2016 article from E! News, the first iteration of the meme appeared on Tumblr in 2012 . The meme was a calendar featuring a smiling photo of Timberlake on April 30 with "It's gonna be May!" written on it. The meme caught fire and different versions of it have been in circulation ever since.

Timberlake even got in on the fun himself in 2020, posting a version of the meme on X where his mouth is covered by a mask during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Timberlake said in a September 2023 interview on popular YouTube interview show " Hot Ones " that he was not the one who came up with idea to sing the line in the song that way.

Timberlake confirmed on the show that he sang "It's gonna be me," and a producer told him to say "may" instead, with fellow NSYNC member JC Chasez chiming in to remind Timberlake the producers and songwriters Max Martin, Andreas Calsson and Rami were Swedish and had accents.

"What's funny specifically to Max Martin is, the parts of their English that were broken actually made them catchier songwriters because they would put words in a way that almost didn't make sense, but when you sang them they were more memorable," Timberlake said.

"I knew one day they're going to invent this thing called memes," Timberlake joked. "But yes, it was a specific note and I did it the way he requested and that's what made the record," he concluded.

Rangers’ Max Scherzer scratched from 2nd scheduled rehab start because of sore thumb

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer was scratched from his second scheduled rehab start Tuesday because of thumb soreness.

The soreness is similar to what Scherzer experienced last year before being sidelined for the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs for the World Series champion Rangers.

Scherzer is rehabbing from surgery in mid-December to repair a herniated disk in his lower back , and said that isn’t giving him any issues.

“I’m frustrated. You want to be out there pitching. I’ve put myself in a position to get back out there,” Scherzer said in the Rangers’ clubhouse. “Coming off the back surgery, I’ve jumped through every hoop and really been putting myself in position to help the team out sooner than anybody thought. And the reason I’m not going out there is a thumb injury.”

Texas manager Bruce Bochy classified it as a “minor setback” for the three-time Cy Young Award winner.

“You’re talking days, not weeks,” Bochy said.

The 39-year-old Scherzer had been scheduled to start for Double-A Frisco at Corpus Christi on Tuesday night. That was six days after the eight-time All-Star threw 52 pitches into the third inning of his first rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock.

Scherzer said the inside ligament on his right thumb bothered him some in a simulated game before that, but he was able to manage in the start for Round Rock. Things changed in the last few days while preparing to start another game.

“Coming out of the bullpen, it was just going to get worse. And then it was starting to leak into the forearm. The forearm was starting to get tight on me,” he said. “Just need a couple days to let everything breathe, get everything back underneath me. There’s nothing really structurally wrong. It’s just some discomfort and just need to let it subside so nothing bad happens.”

The Rangers acquired Scherzer from the Mets in a deadline trade last July after the pitcher agreed to opt in on the final year of his contract for this season at $43.3 million. New York is paying $30.83 million of that to Texas in twice-monthly installments.

After the trade, Scherzer was 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts for the Rangers, the last in the regular season on Sept. 12 before being sidelined by a muscle strain in his shoulder . He returned to make two starts in the American League Championship Series, then Game 3 of the World Series before exiting after three innings because of his back.

Scherzer said Tuesday he had some thumb soreness in the regular season last year that became forearm tightness and led to the shoulder issue.

“That was the progression last year, and this was starting to mimic it,” he said.

As for the rehab of his back and how it was recovering, Scherzer said he had the kind of velocity he would have in spring training in the start for Round Rock. He said it was a normal ramp-up in an effort to get back into the Rangers’ rotation.

His 3,367 career strikeouts are the most among active pitchers, and he’s second on the active list with 214 wins and 448 games started.

“We’ll let this thing clear up a little,” Bochy said. “You have to expect these things, especially when a guy’s coming back from a pretty good layoff. The good news is it’s not his back. His thumb’s a little sore, and that will clear up.”

Former Giants Tight End Aaron Thomas Dead at 86 

Thomas etched his name in the Giants franchise record books.

Former NFL tight end Aaron Thomas, who played for the New York Giants during the 1962-1970 seasons, passed away on April 26 at his home in Corvallis, Oregon, after a long illness. He was 86.

Thomas played 116 regular-season games, etching himself in the team’s record books with 254 receptions (17th), 4,253 yards (14th), and 35 touchdowns (tied for sixth with Homer Jones and Del Shofner). The sturdy Thomas missed only seven games during his NFL career.

 Thomas also had two receptions in the 1963 NFL Championship Game, in which the Giants lost 14-10 to the Chicago Bears.

Thomas, who played college ball at Oregon State, first became a potential Giants draft target during the Senior Bowl, where Giants head coach Allie Sherman coached him. Sherman was so impressed with Thomas that he told him he would find a way to trade for him if he couldn’t draft him.

Thomas was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 1961 draft and by the Dallas Texans (later the Kansas City Chiefs) in the 16th round of the American Football League draft. Sherman and the Giants acquired Thomas via trade from the 49ers by sending halfback Bob Gaiters to the 49ers.

In 1964, Thomas led the Giants with 43 receptions for 624 yards and six touchdowns, earning a Pro Bowl berth. In 1967, he recorded career highs in receptions (51), receiving yards (877), and touchdowns (9).

Thomas retired following the 1970 season. His son, Robb Thomas, later went on to have a ten-year career in the NFL as a wide receiver, entering the league as a fourth-round draft choice by the Chiefs in 1989.
