From 1866 to 1878, Oxford Street’s Paddington Reservoir was built. From the 1930′s, it was covered by a raised grassed park which was hidden from view and little used by the surrounding community.

Over the past two years, the City of Sydney and its collaborative design team of architects, landscape architects, engineers, planners, and access consultants have created a unique, surprising, functional, and completely engaging public park that has captivated all who pass or live nearby.

Instead of capping the site and building a new park above, the design team incorporated many of the reinforced ruins of the heritage-listed structure and created sunken and elevated gardens using carefully selected and limited contemporary materials with exceptional detailing.

Course content

A Master thesis is to a large extent an independent work where the candidate(s) demonstrates his/her ability to develop an architectural design project or a research report on a specific topic in the field of sustainable architecture.

Hence, there are two different routes towards a Master of Science diploma in Sustainable Architecture:

1) Architectural design project (drawings, models, text) or

2) A research based work or anthology (written report).

Learning outcome

The candidate

  • has advanced knowledge of sustainable architecture as a field of knowledge; its theory and history as well as its technical, scientific, social and cultural basis, and can apply this knowledge in his/her own architectural design- or research work.
  • has advanced aesthetic and technical understanding and can apply this knowledge in own architectural work or in research articles.
  • has advanced experiential knowledge of the relationship between architectural representations at different levels of abstraction, and built architecture, cities and towns that are in use over time.
  • has advanced knowledge about bioclimatic design, passive climatization strategies, life cycle assessment, zero emission buildings, and Integrated energy design.

The candidate…

  • is able to give form to architecture and/or neighbourhoods at a high international architectural level through artistic and scientific investigations, concept development, and architectural design in relevant formats
  • is able to structure and develop a scientific research work relating to state of the art knowledge and ongoing research activities.
  • is trained in the use of architectural methods, tools and expressions, and can apply these in architectural design, urban design and/or research, in a targeted, professional and experimental manner.
  • is able to critically assess and recognise quality in architectural works, cities, projects and urban plans, including in his/her own work, and make use of such assessments in his/her own architectural work.

General competence:

The candidate...

  • takes independent responsibility for his/her own learning and professional development and is able to apply his/her knowledge in new fields.
  • is able to reflect critically and ethically on his/her own architectural design or research work, create new frameworks for understanding, and depart from conventions after critical consideration.
  • is able to communicate architectural work, both design and research, including his/her own and others work to specialists as well as to the general public at a professional level and in an academic context.
  • relates his/her professional competence and involvement to key societal issues.
  • can independently and critically use the knowledge acquired throughout the master programme in research or architectural design projects.

Learning methods and activities

Individual work with guidance from a supervisor. Workshops and intermediate group presentations accompany the process.

Further on evaluation

The master's thesis can be done:

1) Individually

2) In groups of two students with individual assessment

3) In groups of two students with a common assessment.

All students have the right to complete the Master thesis individually. In the assignment type 2, each student's contribution needs to be clearly identifiable. Students are allowed to choose assignment type 2 or 3 provided that they themselves organize the group and that the supervisor for the group approves this.

As a general rule, the master's thesis must be written in English. Norwegian as language can exceptionally be used, upon application to the program leader and upon agreement with the student's supervisor.

All candidates are required to submit a master thesis contract with their main supervisor before starting the master project. In the case of a group assignment, the partnership will be noted in this contract.

An external sensor will read and go through the delivered material in the weeks between the delivery date and the final presentation.

In presenting their work students can follow a standard outline including a brief introduction of the topic, including a brief state of the art analysis, an explanation of the thesis scope and the methodologies used for reaching results that are presented and discussed before the conclusion.

During the exam, the moderator will ask the external sensor to start an academic discussion in dialogue with the student, involving the internal sensor and other teachers. The sensors should provide feedback on the students work and give him/her the possibility of replying to concerns and questions related to the work.

After the presentations, external and internal sensors will meet to discuss and grade the thesis. Both sensors determine the grade together, but the external sensor has the last word. The external sensor is responsible for writing a small feedback and justification for the grade given.

The evaluation committee adopts the NTNU grading scale in the evaluation.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required: Sustainable Architecture (MSSUSARC)

Required previous knowledge

All required courses in the previous semesters in the MSc programme in sustainable architecture must have been passed (90 ECT). The faculty may accept that a maximum of one courses of 7.5 ECTS that course is not considered essential for starting the work with the master thesis.

This thesis seeks to examine the possible ways to address the problem of vulnerable communities (particularly rural village communities) by using sustainable architecture as a tool for development of the communities and improving educational quality. Through the exploration of themes of sustainable architecture, ecological schoolyards/landscapes and environmental education, along with case studies, the thesis will gather creative ideas which schools have to be successfully developed on their grounds to create opportunities that encourage children to explore the natural environment and learn about sustainability. Finally, the goal of this thesis will be to demonstrate how architecture can become an important part of educational and community development.

Traditional rural living environments have the potential to be instructive in numerous ways. Rural settlements, which are often created with a minimum of effort and have been around for thousands of years, can be a template for living environments of tomorrow. Starting off with that proposition, this paper goes on to emphasize the importance of examining the characteristics of traditional rural settlements in the context of sustainability. Ume kbubu, as the traditional house of the Fatumnasi community, is a cultural product from local wisdom which has continually been adapted to the environment to ensure its sustainability. This research was, therefore, conducted to explore the principles of sustainable architecture in ume kbubu using an explorative approach with an ethnographic design applied to obtain necessary information from the objects of study such as the houses of the Village Head and the leader of Hamlet 1 in Fatumnasi village which were determined using a purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained through observation, interviews, and literature study and the results showed the ume kbubu’s sustainability is due to its long adaptation and natural selection for years which makes it a sustainable architecture and was also found to fulfill the three elements required which are economic, social and environmental.

The concept of sustainability has been the subject of many academic forums (especially in the built environment) since the new millennium, due to the increased awareness of the negative effects of unsustainable practices on the environment. Studies reveal a universal accord that architectural education needs to adapt to the requirements of today’s world for a better tomorrow, (M. Adegbile 2012). Despite increased awareness of sustainability issues the Architectural curriculum in Nigeria remains unchanged. Efforts have been made by some schools of architecture and research groups (in developed countries) at reviewing the architectural curriculum for sustainability; resulting in new and modified educational programmes often with the tag ‘sustainable’ or ‘sustainability’ attached to it. These commendable efforts have brought up several new challenges, highlighting flaws and areas of needed improvement. By studying what has been done and learning from the mistakes of others Nigeria can develop a unique curriculum that satisfies local needs as well as global standards. This research is primarily based on literature review, and aims at identifying the prevalent challenges in the development and implementation of a sustainable architectural curriculum, by reviewing the findings and recommendations of recent and relevant works on the subject of ‘sustainable architectural education’. The findings revealed three common factors of concern namely; quality of staff, infrastructure/facilities, regulatory influence/pedagogical barriers. A long term plan designed to systematically address the challenges is recommended in the quest to develop a sustainable architectural curriculum for Nigeria. It is hoped that this research will provide a conceptual framework for a sustainable architectural educational system in Nigeria. Creating Through Mind and Emotions

The education system is the structural pillar to forming individuals and communities, being the most effective tool for promoting communities and nations’ qualification and human development. The present case sets from this conscience and explores, in the territorial setting of Inharrime in Mozambique, a project that promotes with the local population the conditions to study and learn in the context of creative sharing. The community of Inharrime depends entirely on subsistence farming, complemented by a fragile local economic trade system, highlighting the needs of its population aggravated by the years of civil war. Resorting to the reinterpretation of vernacular construction strategies, the new School of Ocuana’s proposal takes architecture as a strategy to empower the territory’s starting point to enhance human development. Recognizing the benefits of education for discovering the paths of progress, the project takes advantage of participation processes as strategies for integrating and developing ties of belonging with the site, working beyond the school, houses that are added to it and sow the logic of a desired urbanity, adjusted to a territory in reconfiguration. The project methodology accommodates the chosen materials, the constructive process, and the locals’ ways of living essence, articulating the functions and the intervention scales, using the school building project as an emotional anchor for sustained development.

The analysis of the current state of classrooms in the informal urban settlements or slums as they are also known is examined by referring to the different environmental conditions (e.g. Ventilation & air quality), physical conditions (e.g. Site location and context) and sociocultural conditions (e.g. Health, sanitation and culture), found in these settlements. This analysis goes towards understanding how these different conditions directly or indirectly influence the learning experiences within schools in these settlements. The sociocultural conditions response to the communities that largely live and work in the “slum” context sheds light on the different cultural backgrounds and shows how these cultures can be integrated within schools to create a strong cultural foundation that informs the quality of spaces. This thesis highlights the lack of proper educational institutions, especially for the younger population in these settlements and aims to propose a design for an elementary school that ties culture back into the architecture to produce good quality school for young children (Maina 2019). By referencing the history of the education system in Kenya, this thesis project intends to shine a light to the genesis of the problem with relation to infrastructure or as Le Corbusier put it, “We cannot escape the past or ignore the pit from where we were hewn.” (Le Corbusier 1937, x; Maina 2019, 1). This project responds to the need for good quality spaces that will in turn help the growing interest with social sustainability and architecture which has a social responsibility to design quality spaces that come with the need to equip the three main local communities (Kikuyu, Luo and Nubian) of Kibera slum in Nairobi, with the tools they need to afford them a better future.

CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURES. FROM OBJECT TO TERRITORY

Learning building as urban program punctuates the city territory, as constant diurnal attraction space. Contemporary architecture practice informs on several mutations towards sustainable discourse – from the school as community center, meeting PLACE, until the transformation of schools in strategic territorial points to extreme disaster cases. In all approached cases, pre-university learning buildings architecture proposes from now on an idea of the community sustainability, from the common examples dedicated to scarcity areas, to the ones with special design, and beyond to the communities that invests active in education as driver of the society. We could speak also about a characteristic on activation of actual educational space at global level through kindergartens, schools and high-schools construction which are acting as social empowerment, but facilitated at community level. The investigation on space dedicated to learning process is lead through analyzing different hypostasis on which education defines today, the principles of sustainability being permanently ordinators factors. Independent or forming integrated educational systems, based on intergenerational principles, materialized in children learning dedicated ensemble from 0 to 18 years old and not only (important is the lifelong learning concept), these function as attractors for local communities. Developing more and more often on sustainable principles, architecture of learning buildings could have a profound didactic character, knowing the fact that the power of example is primordial, no matter of age but especially in the process of training. Green buildings principles are analyzed both in the new buildings case studies (Primary School Duranes, New Mexico, 2008 / Baker Architecture + Design; Primary School Duranes, New Mexico, 2009 / Baker Architecture + Design; Nueva School California, SUA, 2007 / Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects; Primary School Complex Techum, Olanda, 2009 / Zerodegree Architecture; Primary School and Sport Hall, Boulogne Billancourt 2011-2013/ Chartier-Dalix architects) and in the case studies of functional conversions, for example old industrial ensembles (Fyrstikkalleén School, Oslo, Norvegia, 2010/ GASA Architects) offer support for interesting exercises in case of architecture learning programs, having double connotation, weighting between social role in community and the depolluting role at the city level.

Sustainable Learning Through Architecture Elementary School: A Synergy of Metrics

Sustainability (noun): “Sustainable development is built environment that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

When is a good time for our future generations to start learning about sustainability? Education is humanity’s best hope and most effective means in the quest to achieve sustainable future. Sustainability has become a priority and needs to be addressed as a school of thought from a very young age to be more effective and achieve better results. Research shows that sustainability education must begin in early childhood when children tend to learn, absorb, and retain values, attitudes, and form habits/behavioral patterns that will have long lasting impact in later life. Hence the goal of this thesis is to design an elementary school that teaches children the idea of sustainability at an early age to support establishing sustainability as a way of life. The school is intended to be a prototype mainly by being an active teaching tool for students through its architecture to help institute a better understanding of the principles of sustainability. The process involves research and providing a design solution for students who would reiterate the above belief for a sustainable future.

Currently sustainability is being more widely accepted and put into practice where educational organizations are embracing the concept of sustainable schools . The design exploration in this thesis is arrived at by investigating old and new educational facilities for methods being used to incorporate sustainability. Current green/sustainable school concepts and new trends, school sustainability policies and agendas, the objective and quantifying metrics, and tools employed to measure sustainability are some topics that would be reviewed upon both in literature and case studies. The effectiveness achieved due to these schools along with generic problems being faced in sustainable schools, including the impact on students (personal health) and their performance, are also comprehended within the research domain. Case studies of existing sustainable schools are examined to see how they are achieving their goals and as informants to the design proposal.

To achieve the above stated, a ‘systems approach’ towards sustainability is of primary importance. The systems approach in this context encompasses the ideology of how different metrics/branches of sustainability come together to act as one whole. This method implies integration of metrics such as daylighting, building envelope, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning), and the use of renewable resources in an interactive and inter-dependent dynamic web where the design of one attribute affects either positively or negatively on another attribute. Therefore, every aspect needs to be taken into consideration to avoid any incapacitation in the building systems. Thus, keeping all the metrics in sight of the design parameters helps guide a sustainable and synergetic output.

DEVELOPMENT OF PASSIVE VISION BASED RELATIVE STATION KEEPING FOR UNMANNED SURFACE VEHICLES

Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) offer a versatile platform for various maritime applications, including research, surveillance, and search-and-rescue operations. A critical capability for USVs is maintaining position (station keeping) in dynamic environments and coordinating movement with other USVs (formation control) for collaborative missions. This thesis investigates control strategies for USVs operating in challenging conditions.

The initial focus is on evaluating traditional control methods like Backstepping and Sliding Mode controllers for station keeping in simulated environments with disturbances. The results from these tests pointed towards the need for a more robust control technique, like deep-learning based control for enhanced performance.

The thesis then explores formation control, a crucial aspect of cooperative USV missions. A vision-based passive control strategy utilizing a virtual leader concept is proposed. This approach leverages onboard cameras to detect markers on other USVs, eliminating the need for direct communication and potentially improving scalability and resilience.

Then the thesis presents vision-based formation control architecture and the station keeping controller evaluations. Simulation results are presented, analyzed, and used to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. Finally, the thesis discusses the implications of the findings and proposes potential future research directions
