– To reach the lab, players can fast travel to the nearest discovered location and follow the in-game compass.

– The building is bordered by roads that have seen better days and the remnants of what was once a bustling urban area.

– Subway stations nearby, such as Kendall station, offer alternate routes for entry and escape, considering the lurking dangers of post-apocalyptic Massachusetts.

– Nearby landmarks serve as useful orientation points; avid explorers might recognize the distinct architecture of the neighboring buildings.

– The entrance of Cambridge Polymer Labs is marked by a sign, aiding players to pinpoint their destination amidst the chaos.

This site serves as a treasure trove for adventurers seeking advanced technology and valuable resources amidst the desolate backdrop of Fallout 4.

Detailed Walkthrough for the Cambridge Polymer Labs Quest

Upon entering Cambridge Polymer Labs, you’ll be greeted by a robotic staff member who will assign you the task of continuing a pre-war research project. The key steps in the quest include:

  • 1. Navigating the Facility: Explore the lab to find the main research terminal that will provide initial instructions. Collect any useful items along the way, such as protective gear and key cards.
  • 2. Finding Samples: Several chemical samples needed for the experiment are scattered throughout the lab. Look for U-238, Lithium Hydride, Gold, and other elements. Their locations vary, so check desks, containment units, and other surfaces.
  • 3. Using the Isolation Chamber: Once you’ve gathered the necessary samples, head to the Isolation Chamber. Deposit each sample into the chamber’s receptacle slots.
  • 4. Completing the Experiment: Use the research terminal to start the centrifuge and combine the samples. Depending on your choices of elements, you’ll synthesize different compounds.
  • 5. Unlocking the Exit: Creating the correct polymer releases the lockdown and allows you to exit the lab. If you’d prefer not to complete the experiment, look for an alternate route—a hole in the wall created by some debris may provide a way out.
  • 6. Collecting the Reward: Whether you complete the experiment or not, upon exiting, you’ll face the feral ghouls inside the facility. Deal with them accordingly, and then collect any additional loot before leaving.

Remember that your in-game decisions may affect this process, and various routes can be taken to achieve the end goal. This section of the quest requires a blend of exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat skills to proceed.

Quest Impact On Fallout 4 Factions

The decisions you make during the Cambridge Polymer Labs quest can subtly influence your standing with the major factions in Fallout 4.

  • Working with Molly, the robotic lab assistant, and engaging with the research tasks she assigns doesn’t directly affect any factions. However, it immerses you in the pre-war world, which is a subject of interest for the Brotherhood of Steel.
  • If you side with the trapped scientist and decide to release him, rather than completing the experiment, this choice aligns with the humanitarian approach often adopted by the Railroad and Minutemen, although it doesn’t have a direct impact on your relationships with these groups.
  • By finishing the experiment and creating the piezoelectric material, you can keep it for personal gain or potentially leverage it in future interactions with the Brotherhood of Steel, who have a vested interest in technology.

Remember, none of these actions will drastically change your standing with any faction, but they add depth to your character’s alignment and can provide role-playing direction.

Related Quests and Their Connection

The ‘Cambridge Polymer Labs’ quest interlinks with other missions that either lead you there or stem from events within the lab:

  • “The Molecular Level” : This main storyline quest might bring you in proximity to the lab where you can stumble across it naturally, or be led there through exploring.
  • “Hypothesis” : Built on the principles of polymer developments, this quest available through the Institute faction has ties with the technology you explore in the Cambridge Polymer Labs.

From giving Molly the 'right' answer to finding the optional exit route, here's a guide to the tricky Cambridge Polymer Labs side quest in Fallout 4.

There are many side quests in Fallout 4 , often given to the player through a companion or faction leader . But there are also side quests discovered only by talking to specific NPCs, more of the quirky characters found by exploring The Commonwealth. One of those NPCs is a Mr. Handy robot named Molly, found at the Cambridge Polymer Labs.

RELATED: Best Settlement Locations In Fallout 4, Ranked

Cambridge Polymer Labs is located just to the left of the CIT Ruins. Once inside, Molly will float over to the player to start talking about the lab. If you struggle to complete your objective in this tricky location, this guide will show you the way.

Finding The Labs And Being Hired By Molly

On arriving here and speaking with Molly, she will mention the need for extra staff and will offer a job to the player. The player must speak with Molly, as killing her or hacking her using the Robotics Expert perk will not start the quest. It will not softlock the quest either, as the player can enter the lab by themselves, but you will miss the relevant information. As such, it is advised to play as intended and answer Molly's questions.

Pressing "What?" will result in Molly repeating the question but in further detail. Pressing "No" will result in Molly telling the player they are not allowed anywhere beyond the lobby and will not activate the quest, meaning the player has to speak to her again. Pressing either "Sarcastic" or "Sure" will continue to the next part of the quest start-up, which is another question from Molly. She'll ask if the player knows about polymer synthesis.

All answers from the player will work, but each will lead to a different career option. "Threaten" will result in Molly hiring you as a security guard, "Polymer synthesis?" will result in Molly hiring you as janitorial staff, "Yes" will result in being hired as a researcher, and a successful "You need me" will result in the player being hired as a sales coordinator. After this, Molly will tell the player about the orientation, which can be further elaborated on if asked. This orientation is only there for the backstory and can be skipped outright. After either skipping or sitting through orientation, Molly will ask the player to follow her to the lab itself. Molly will hand the player clothes based on their chosen career and then lock them in a room. This is where the quest officially starts.

Creating The Piezonucleic Power Armor

You are tasked with finding the correct materials, bringing them to the terminal, and starting the procedure to create a new alloy. The three ingredients are:

  • Lithium Hydrate
  • Isotope U-238

There are multiple canisters containing an element but only one isotope, and each canister is labeled secretly. When placed on the left or right reagent dock, the computer can scan the canister to reveal the contents, but this can cause a problem for players not using mods or console commands. The reason for this is that all canisters are quest items and remain so even after completion, meaning they will be forever stuck in the player's inventory. Thankfully the canisters are always in the same location and are color-coded. The lithium hydrate is located on the first floor, directly across from the start, as pictured here:

It's the green canister on the shelf and just above it is a hazmat suit that the player can also pick up (which will prove very useful a little later). For gold, the player must go up the stairs and the room to the right, where they will find a hole in the ceiling.

Walk to the very end and find another hole leading to a sealed-off room. The canister of gold is on a table.

It is the red canister next to the terminal, and further to the left on another table is a password. On exiting the room, be warned: there is an explosive trap.

Drop back down to the bottom floor and enter the room adjacent to where the lithium hydrate was located. Here you'll find a novice-level terminal. Use the password or hack it to unlock the room on the opposite side.

This room is heavily irradiated. Players without strong radiation resistance may need to rely on the hazmat suit to progress safely. Once you've dealt with that deadly danger, simply pick up the isotope U-238.

Take all three ingredients and place them on the console; hydrate in the left reagent space, gold in the right reagent space, and isotope in the far right space. Use the terminal the start the procedure. When the process is complete, you will gain a piece of power armor. Report back to Molly.

Speak with Molly and tell her you are done. Molly will let you out of the lab and walk you upstairs to see the Director. She unlocks the master level door, where the player discovers the Director is another feral ghoul that must be defeated.

RELATED: Every Fallout Game Ever Released, Ranked

After killing the Director, Molly thanks the player for their work, pays them 25 pre-war money, fires them on the spot for being redundant, and permanently shuts off. Players can loot her corpse, but the most important thing to pick up here is the Massachusetts Surgical Journal on the desk.

Optional Exit Route

If the player chooses, they can instead instantly leave the lab without doing the experiment. In the same room as the gold is a hackable terminal. The terminal is an expert-level one, and there is no password to find. This room, again, can be accessed by a hole in the roof, but the player can also hug this wall and use a terminal to open the door from the outside.

If you choose to do this, you will take damage due to the tripwire. Walk up to the terminal to start hacking.

If successful, the override will commence, and the lab door will open back up. Molly will be hostile to you and killing her is required to end this optional route.

The key to the office will be on her corpse, so the player can still acquire the Massachusetts Surgical Journal if they complete the quest through this optional path.

how to complete the research project at cambridge polymer labs

News tip Cambridge Polymer Laboratory Fallout 4: How to complete this quest?

Published on 04/23/2024 at 9:35 p.m.

Did you want to get back into Fallout 4 following the success of the series and are you stuck on the secondary map of the Cambridge Polymer laboratory? No worries, in this article, we will guide you step by step so that you can overcome it!

  • How to start the Cambridge Polymer laboratory quest in Fallout 4?

Collect samples

Start the crafting procedure and complete the quest, alternative solution for cambridge polymer lab quest.

Once there, chat with Molly and follow her into the meeting room to listen to the briefing. Then go to the laboratory and the quest will activate, blocking you in the decontamination zone. To avoid taking too much damage, move forward into the opening on the right to get out of there.

Your quest for samples then begins and the first, No. 11317, is located near the terminal on the right in the next room. Then go to the room behind and then to the one furthest to the left afterwards. On the bookshelf, you collect the dry suit and sample No. 3111.

Then enter room C4, collect sample No. 413 and go through the hole in the wall. In this new room, collect sample No. 65 and use the terminal on the right to lock the isotope containment room . Then go up the stairs to reach the upper floor.

Cambridge Polymer Laboratory Fallout 4: How to complete this quest?

Once arrived, turn right and pass over the chairs to arrive in the room on the left where sample No. 49 is on the desk. Then go up through the hole in the ceiling. You arrive in conduits, turn right, then left. Then drop down and collect sample #611 near Bergman's computer.

Use the terminal to unlock the door and go back down to the central area. Put on the suit recovered earlier and enter the isotope containment zone. Eliminate the luminescent and collect the U-238 isotope from the shelf at the back.

Cambridge Polymer Laboratory Fallout 4: How to complete this quest?

You have now collected everything you need and all you have to do is return to the quest marker. There, insert the samples into the slots so that you can identify them. Once it's done, insert the lithium hydride and gold into both compartments.

Be careful, there is a bug that causes lithium hydride to bug if you remove it, So don't touch it once it's in place! Then insert the isotope on the right and use the computer to start the manufacturing procedure. Then collect the breastplate. All you have to do is return to the decontamination room and speak with Molly.

She then unlocks the door for you. Follow her to the principal's office and kill the ghoul before talking one last time with Molly . Once that's done, you're officially done with this Cambridge Polymer Lab quest in Fallout 4!

Cambridge Polymer Laboratory Fallout 4: How to complete this quest?

Before leaving us, know that there is an alternative solution for this quest. When you are in Bergman's office, you will be able to use your computer to activate the defense system . By doing this you open all doors in the complex.

Be careful though, because even if you will succeed in the optional objective by doing this, Molly won't really like it and will attack you . You will then have no choice but to destroy it. So see if you want to do it or keep her alive.

Fallout 4 Player Loses Survival Mode Progress in Most Heartbreaking Way Possible

Fallout 4 fan makes unique custom pip-boy, fallout 4: how to recruit more settlers.

Few RPGs can match the sheer variety of quests that the  Fallout   franchise is known for. Each major entry in the franchise has dozens of unique quests for players to uncover.  Fallout 3's unique quest premises and  New Vegas's excellent writing have made some of the most memorable quests in gaming, but few mention how good some of  Fallout 4 's quests are.

RELATED:  10 Hidden Locations In Fallout 4 You Didn’t Know Existed

Many of the game's locations offer a degree of environmental storytelling that few can match. A great example of this is the Cambridge Polymer Labs, a defense research facility that has a terrifying history that is told almost entirely through its environment. Ranging from quests secrets to lore, here are 10 hidden things players likely missed in the Cambridge Polymer Labs in  Fallout 4 .

10 Massachusetts Surgical Journal Issue #6

Once players can leave the labs proper, they might have to enter the director's office based on decisions made during the quest. Inside a master safe near the director's desk is the sixth issue of the Massachusetts Surgical Journal. Collecting this magazine increases the damage a player does towards limbs by 2%.

9 Scientists Helped Create Liberty Prime

When players first enter the Cambridge Polymer Labs, they will be told by Molly that the scientists that work here are partially responsible for the creation of Liberty Prime . The Brotherhood of Steel's greatest weapon exists because of the scientists who died here.

Strangely, it seems that Bethesda has inadvertently retconned  Fallout 3's lore. Molly also mentioned that Liberty Prime was responsible for taking back Anchorage, even though terminals in the third game explicitly state that it was never ready during this time.

8 Power Armor Project

Entering the labs of the facility will lock the players inside until the scientific project inside is complete, something that seems random when the player enters here. What players learn during the "Cambridge Polymer Labs" quest is that this project has been going on since before the bombs fell .

Scientists inside of the labs were tasked with producing a new piece of power armor for the United States military during the war. However, they never figured out how to complete the armor hence why the player must experiment with isotopes to craft the armor.

Unfortunately, the scientists were stuck inside after the bombs fell due to the government forcing them to complete the project. The director of the facility, Jon Elwood, was told that they could not leave until the project was complete. Jon never told the scientists, which ended up making matters worse. The team would attempt to escape the facility throughout the coming weeks as they suffered from radiation poisoning.

7 Ghouls Are The Remaining Scientists

All of the panicked scientists tried to escape through multiple methods, mainly by attempting to drill out of the labs or trying to unlock the facility by triggering the security systems. Regardless, all of them died. Most of them were killed by the security measures inside the facility, but there were a few that lived through it.

RELATED:  Fallout 4: The 10 Most Exceedingly Rare Items In The Game

Those scientists are the enemy Ghouls that players fight during their time at the lab. The Glowing One that resided next to the final isotope is none other than Mary Goodman, a scientist that tried to grab U-238 but was locked by her coworker Wilfred Bergman. This would trigger the security alarm that would kill nearly everyone inside the laboratory.

6 Tom Franklin's Suicide Note

Working conditions inside of the labs became so bad that some scientists decided to take their own lives. One of these scientists was Tom Franklin. The radiation from outside of the labs became so bad that Tom began to go blind and lose his hair. He ended up poisoning himself, as is detailed in his suicide note near his skeleton.

5 Job Title Items

During the start of the "Cambridge Polymer Labs" quest, players are interviewed to see which role they could fulfill. What players likely missed is how they answer the interview directly correlates to what Molly gives the player.

Succeeding in a speech check with her will make players a salesman, complete with a dirty tan suit and a pen. Failing that same speech check will make the player a lab assistant, granting them a lab coat and a battered clipboard. Players will also receive a mop and jumpsuit if they are deemed a janitor, while security personnel are given dirty armory fatigues, sunglasses, and a baton.

4 Removing The Samples After The Quest

Completing the "Cambridge Polymer Labs" questline will still mark the canisters as essential, meaning players can't drop them under any circumstances.

Those who want to get rid of these items can do so by telling their companions to inspect the reagent near a terminal. Tell them to inspect the chemical reagent again, place another isotope inside the machine, and repeat this process until every quest item is removed.

3 Dr. Bergman's Terminal Password

One of "Cambridge Polymer Lab's" stranger quest requirements is for the player to find Dr. Bergman's password. It seems incongruent with the rest of the quest, but this objective actually comes up during another quest, specifically the "Underground Undercover" quest for the Railroad .

RELATED:  Every Major City In Fallout 4 & How Many NPCs Live There

Bergman's password is key to uncovering information relating to the Institute.

2 Multiple Mollys

Some players have experienced a strange bug during the "Cambridge Polymer Labs" quest that causes Molly to become hostile. It seems that Bethesda knew this was an issue because multiple Mollys exist throughout the zone.

Should Molly be killed during the opening portion of the quest, a second Molly will appear from an inaccessible room to continue the quest. This second Molly is sometimes considered essential and cannot be killed. Whether this is a bug or intentional is unknown.

1 "Cambridge Polymer Labs" Quest Skip

Speaking of killing Molly, players have the ability to skip most of the area's quest entirely by killing Molly towards the start of the quest. When she dies, players can loot the corpse to obtain the director's quarters key.

Open the room, defeat the enemy inside, then loot the room to complete the quest. This bypasses nearly the entire quest chain, although players can still return to the labs at any time to complete the research project and obtain the unique Piezonucleic power armor .

Thermal dissipation [ ]

Tensile strain [ ], trapped [ ].

We've been trapped in the lab for days now and tensions are running high. The team is fractured and falling apart. They don't know what is going on outside and have started making attempts to escape the lab. While I was sleeping they managed to cut a hole through the thinner interior wall of the clean room, but have been unable to break through the hardened outer wall. Wil started talking with some of the others about going at the problem from "a more oblique angle", which got me to thinking about the thermal dissipation problem when it dawned on me. If we change dosing pattern so it isn't producing nanoholes perpendicular to the surface but instead at an angle, we might be able to reflect the most direct radioactive particles and trapping only those coming in at an oblique angle to the material. We would achieve a lower energy harvest, but the heat dissipation issues might be solved. Tom , Mary , and I are going to gather the samples needed to try it.

We're so close [ ]

We've been unable to gather the samples needed to try the new dosing pattern. Wil has locked himself in one of the labs, and has been attempting to hack into the administrative systems. When we tried to get the U-238 we need from the isotope containment, he locked it down leaving Mary stranded inside. He said he is going to set the facility defense systems so that it looks like the lab has been breached. This will unlock the clean room, but will also activate the automated defenses which will see us as attackers. He means to fight his way out, but that's suicide. He's the only one in the lab with military training, and we don't even have real weapons. I've tried to tell him that we can complete the project, that we have the answer now, but he refuses to see reason and doesn't believe Jon will actually let us out. We've managed to pull down part of the ceiling in C1, which will get us into the utility crawl space. It can't get us out, but it should be able to get us above the lab Wil has barricaded himself in. I don't like it, but we have to get the drop on him.

[W. Bergman] - I'm getting us out [ ]

2078.1.16.04:17 Sender: [W.Bergman] >> I'm getting us out I'm not letting Jon play tyrant any longer. The isotope containment is leaking and he still won't let us out. I've gotten through his updated security subroutines and it's only a matter of time till I get control of the Facility Defenses. He's so busy trying to keep me out of the Clean Room Controls, he probably hasn't realized that by triggering a Facility Breached sweep, all the doors will open to allow the robots access. We're fighting our way out and then I'll deal with your husband. - Wil

Sender: [J.Elwood] >>Mandatory Overtime Good morning everyone, I know you've all been here over night and everyone is tired but I need everyone to push through just a little longer. Dr. Elwood-Woolum has said that you are very close to cracking the problem with the Nucleostrictive lining project and I have a good feeling that today will be the day. Along with our normal snacks, I've sent a runner to Slocum's Joe for coffee and donuts. We'll be ordering Spuckies later this afternoon. I also just got off the phone with Col. Kemp and he said there may be some training exercises happening around town today, so if you hear what sounds like tanks or gunfire, don't panic, it's just a drill.

[E. ElwoodWoolum] - Isotope Containment [ ]

Sender: [E. EldwoodWoolum] >> Isotope Containment Wil, this is insane! Even if you manage to hack into the administrative controls, do you know what will happen if you trigger a security breach? Yes, the doors through the clean room will be open, but the first thing through them will be a wave of robots to kill every living "Intruder" in the lab! Even if we manage to get past them, there are also the turrets. There's one right here in the lab, remember? If you do this you are more likely to get us all killed than set us free! -Ericka

[J. Elwood] - Hacking Admin [ ]

Sender: [J. Elwood] >>Hacking Admin Wilfred, do you think I wouldn't catch on to what you're doing? I got a network alert the moment you took control of the Isotope Containment. You may have been the best hacker on campus back at CIT, but that was years ago and while you were busy up in Alaska, pretending to be a soldier, we had the best programmers working on our security system. I told you weeks ago that I'll let you all out of the lab once the research is completed. Locking Ericka and the rest of the team out of the Isotope Containment just to spite me doesn't accomplish anything. - Director Elwood

FROM: W. Bergman To: Dean Vernon I want it on record that I HIGHLY object to giving admin rights to anyone that isn't on our core team. Admin access isn't a bauble for Doctor Williams to lord over his colleagues. We have designed a nigh perfect system and idiotic moves like this risk EVERYTHING. I have been informed that legally I must comply with this request, no matter how moronic it is. username: TWilliams password: Vernon! Is!An!Idiot!

Latest patch notes [ ]

===================== Change log for v1.10b =====================

  • Fixed Darren 's dirty, dirty hack.
  • Restricted students to having one account per student ID number. No exceptions.
  • Squashed a ton of bugs
  • Major revisions to the main UI. Should be "pretty" for the dog and pony show.
  • Minor tweaks to the brute force counter-measures. Even Volkov couldn't find a hole.

[J. Elwood] - Lockdown status [ ]

Sender: [JElwood] >> Lockdown status Everyone needs to just calm down. Yeas as you've heard by now, I have locked you out of the clean room. As my previous email stated, this push to finish the project IS mandatory. As soon as I have the data for a successful prototype I will unlock the doors and everyone will be free to go home. To address concerns about the noise outside, those are the military exercises I mentioned. I'm aware they're very loud and that some of you have been disturbed by it. I assure you everything is fine. Though we are not openly at war with China, things are stil tense, and the military feels that ground defense exercises are necessary to our safety. Finishing our project here isn't just vital to the company, but also to helping protect our country. -Director Elwood

Call from Kemp [ ]

It was a warning [ ].

He was trying to warn me. They hit us with a nuke. The lab was built to withstand nearly anything but a direct hit, but the EMP has blown out all the external communications. I told the team that there are training maneuvers going on around town, but I don't know how long they are going to buy that. I need to find a way of to get ahold of Col. Kemp to see if they can extract us to a safe location. Even if I can find a working phone somewhere, I'll never be able to get through. Maybe if I can get ahold of a ham radio I can try to reach them on an open channel.

We have to finish the project [ ]

Can't hold out much longer [ ], ericka, please read [ ].

Ericka, I'm sorry. I know I haven't been the best husband, but I've done everything I can to try and protect you since the attack. If you are reading this, I hope it is because you finished the project and can use the radio to signal for extraction. I can't hold out any longer.

[E.ElwoodWoolum] - Are you there? [ ]

Sender:[E.ElwoodWoolum] >> Are you there? Jon, are you there? I can't see you moving in your office and we can't wait any longer. He's going to trigger the automated defenses if we don't do something. We've managed to get into the crawl space and are going to try and take him by surprise. Despite everything that's happened, I want you to know that I still love you. - Erika

[W.Bergman] - I'm getting us out [ ]

Sender:[W.Bergman] >> I'm getting us out I'm getting us out of here, you son of a bitch. Do you hear me Jon? You may have had the connections to get this company started, but I always the better hacker. If you don't release us, you'll leave me with no choice but to trigger the automated defenses. We'll have to fight our way out and Erika may be hurt in the process, is that what you want?

[E.ElwoodWoolum] - He's locked us out [ ]

Sender:[E.ElwoodWoolum] >> He's locked us out I've got the thermal problem solved, but we need the samples to produce a prototype. Wil's barricaded himself in a lab and has locked us out of the isotope containment. I've told the others what is going on, and they hate us for it, but they see this is the only way out right now. We need you to get back control so we can finish the project and get out of here - Erika

[E.ElwoodWoolum] - RE: Confidential [ ]

Sender:[E.ElwoodWoolum] >> RE: Confidential Jon, I don't know if we can do it. We've been working on the problem for weeks and not been able to find a way to prevent the nanoweave from falling apart under the strain of use. Even if we find a solution, it may take days to program the new dosing pattern, and I don't know if I can cover this up that long. Even if I can, I don't know if it's right for us to make that decision. Some of them have families out there, and shouldn't they have the choice to try to protect them? - Erika

The newer dosing patterns have been successful at dissipating the heat generated by the reaction. We've taken a slight hit to the harvest efficiency, but extended the static material lifetime from a matter of days to a several years. While this is, from our perspective, already a successful experiment, the project parameters require a flexible lining that can be applied to power armor.
