As you apply for membership in this national organization, remember NHS membership is based on meeting criteria in four areas that the NHS calls its four pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character .  

Scholarship 

The first pillar, scholarship , requires that a student earns a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. Many high schools set a higher GPA bar for their school’s chapter. If you meet your school’s academic requirement, congratulations, you’ve passed the first hurdle. 

Now it’s important that you carefully complete the application and write a compelling essay.  Most high schools require students to write a 300-500 word essay that showcases their commitment and accomplishments in the other three pillars.

Service refers to the contributions you make to your school and or community on a volunteer basis, without receiving any compensation. For your most significant service activities, be sure to explain why you choose to support certain organizations and why you chose specific roles. 

Showcase your leadership in your school and or community while working with or for others. Remember, stating that you are the captain of a team, president of a club, or supervisor of a shift does not prove that you are a leader. A leader makes things happen, sets a good example, and inspires others to give their personal best. Clearly state why you were selected to hold a leadership position and how you effectively lead. There are many successful leadership styles. Communicate your unique brand of leadership. 

Character is how you conduct yourself with high standards of honesty, reliability, and respect for others. Does the text flow and keep the reader engaged? Last, but not least, have you checked and double-checked your grammar, punctuation, and spelling?

5. Draft, Edit, Edit, Edit, Polish

Writing is an iterative process so give yourself the time necessary to land on the best approach for explaining why you are deserving of the NHS honor. There are many ways to tackle an essay. Success is not only about improving yourself, but also about improving life for others. While my GPA shows my commitment to academics, how I spend my time and conduct myself outside of school reveal my commitment to making the world a better place, consistent with the values of the National Honor Society. 

For the two years my grandfather lived in a nursing home, each weekend I took my dog EJ to visit him. I witnessed first-hand the healing power of animals as EJ lifted his and the other residents’ spirits. Because of this experience and because monkeys are my favorite animal, when I heard about Helping Hands (HH), the only organization in the world that raises capuchin monkeys to be live-in assistants to people with spinal cord injuries, I reached out to volunteer. 

Both in the summer and during the school year, I assist the trainers. Monkeys begin training when they are teenagers. It typically takes three to five years until they are ready to be placed with a person. My first job is to clean the cages of 60 monkeys. (Not my favorite responsibility.) I also prepare meals and construct and distribute dexterity “toys.” 

While not glamorous, my work is critical to the success of the initiative. The physical support the monkeys provide is unbelievable. They turn pages of books, scratch itches, pour water, and retrieve dropped items… Most importantly, I have seen the life-changing impact a monkey’s companionship has on a partner, including a college-age student confined to a wheelchair after a spinal cord injury from hockey. 

In the spring, summer, and fall I also volunteer at Gaining Ground (GG), a non-profit that grows organic produce to donate to food pantries, shelters, and meal programs. When I volunteered at a local food pantry, it struck me that recipients receive mostly canned and packaged food. I think it is important that people in need receive fresh fruits and vegetables, and I enjoy the physical work of weeding, harvesting, cleaning, and packing produce.

Soon after I began volunteering at GG, my rabbi gave a sermon about the working conditions of tomato farmers in Florida. (It reminded me of Grapes of Wrath, and I couldn’t believe inhumane practices continue.) Her sermon motivated me to support the Coalition of Immokalee Workers by distributing postcards urging Trader Joe’s and Stop & Shop to only buy tomatoes from farms that agree to fair wages and human rights. Both chains have now agreed, showing that a little effort by many people makes a difference.

Last, I believe a story is the best way to explain my “behind-the-scenes” leadership. At the annual nighttime football game, one of my soccer teammates (not someone I hang with) was drunk. When our principal came over to the bleachers, my teammate’s friends fled. Concerned that my teammate would fall and hurt herself, I brought her outside the stadium, called her parents, and waited with her until they came — without worrying about social retribution. Despite getting grounded, she thanked me for my help.

When I was a student of the second grade, I started wearing glasses. As it happens pretty often, unfortunately, I was bullied. I did not know what to do. I was weak, lonely and scared. I did not tell my parents, had no will to go to school, study and sometimes even live. It continued for almost a year. At some point, I got tired of being a victim and stood up against the bully. I am proud of that boy I became that moment. Becoming older, I started trying kids understand all the horror of bullying. Every year I organize anti-bullying day. With the permission and assistance of the leaders, teachers and other active students of our school, we inform students about bullying and teach them to fight it. I believe that our effort is not worthless. In future, I want to do more to victims from bullying, violence and crimes.

Three evenings a week I spend in the swimming pool training. I have been practicing jumping into the water since I was seven years old. I don’t see my future connected with professional sport. I don’t dream of becoming an Olympic champion. But I believe that physical training strengthens not only body but character, too. Every time when you have to overcome pain, fatigue, and laziness, you become a stronger person. All the medals and diplomas I have make me believe that when I want something, I achieve it.

Becoming a chosen candidate for national honor society, I see that my school is the place where my leadership qualities are valued. I am proud to be its representative whenever I get such an opportunity.  My personal traits of character help me to gain trust and respect of my peers and teachers. The National Honor Society is an American organization with chapters in high schools in all 50 states, several U.S. territories, and Canada. The NHS allows high school students with a dedication to the society's core values - scholarship, leadership, service, and character - to receive recognition, participate in volunteer activities, apply for college scholarships, and more.

Embodying NHS Values

• Members of National Honor Society must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher on the 4.0 scale. On a 5.0 scale, this would be at least a 4.375 and 5.25 on a 6.0 scale. On a letter grade scale, this would be at least a B+ and 90% or higher grade average on a 100 point scale.
• Start working on your grades early in high school. If you start off with a low GPA you'll have to work extra hard to pull it up in the following semesters. Take your studies and homework seriously.

• Most bookstores, as well as Amazon, sell up to date study guides for most standardized tests. Many colleges and organizations like Kaplan offer prep courses, which can be taken in person or online. If you're serious about NHS membership, consider asking your parents if you can enroll in one of these courses.
• Remember, you can retake most standardized tests if you do not like your score the first time.

• Get involved in your school. Join a club that speaks to your passions and go for a leadership role. You might not be able to be say, president, right away but you can always take a smaller position as a board member or treasurer. Consider running for student council. • You can also get involved outside of school. If you play sports, being the captain of your hockey or soccer team can convey leadership skills. Consider volunteering to coach little league, taking on the role of coach to kids younger than yourself. If you're involved in any other type of community, you can try to be a leader there as well. Say you take art lessons at the community art center. See if they need volunteers to tutor younger students.

• There are many ways to volunteer. You should pick a cause you feel passionate about as you'll be more motivated to stick your service out. Love animals? Work for your local Humane Society. Interested in politics? Try doing campaign work for a cause you support. Big reader? Ask your local library if they need assistance.
• If you're struggling to find volunteer opportunities, go to a local community center, church, hospital, or coffee shop. People often leave flyers in these kinds of establishments trying to recruit volunteers. You can also ask the school counselor or principal of your school. He or she might be in contact with a variety of local organizations seeking out student workers.

Applying for NHS

• Remember that individual chapters differ in their precise rules. Some require you to complete an application to even be considered for membership, while others don't require you to apply until after you've been singled out as eligible. When in doubt, always consult your local chapter for precise instructions.

• Include all the experience you have related to NHS's core values: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Include things like work on school clubs, experience with sports, volunteer work, after school jobs, and any awards or achievements.
• Many chapters of NHS require an essay as part of the membership application. The essay might be a broad overview of your qualifications or it might ask a specific question, like "If you had to have dinner with anyone living or dead who would you pick?" Spend a lot of time on your essay. Write a couple of drafts and have a friend or family member look it over for you.
• If you are not granted membership, you have the right to appeal the council's decision. However, appeals must be made to the local chapter itself - state and national NHS agencies do not hear membership appeals. Do not be discouraged. • Students cannot apply to enter the NHS at the national level, via the organization's website or any other means. All admissions to the NHS are handled at the local level - you must apply to your high school's NHS chapter and no other. • If your school doesn't have an NHS chapter, all is not lost. Try asking your principal, academic adviser, or teacher to establish an NHS chapter at your school. This spring, many students felt the relief and exuberance that comes with an acceptance letter from one’s dream school. Many students attending Ivy League and other top universities are valedictorians and leaders in their high school communities; they excelled throughout their high school careers and graduated with the accolades to prove it. Yet, these students are often in for a rude awakening when they arrive on campus. Though they were exceptional at their high schools, they are a dime a dozen in the Ivy League. This realization can cause many students to feel imposter syndrome and wonder how they can stand out and make an impression on their professors and peers in such a competitive environment.

The more that students prepare themselves for this adjustment, the better. Standing out in college is a different endeavor than standing out in high school—it requires time, intentionality, and a willingness to be uncomfortable and challenge yourself. Most importantly, it takes practice, and if students seek to hone this skill from their first semester on campus, they will set themselves up for success for the next four years.

For students preparing for their first semester in college, here are five strategies to navigate the transition into the Ivy League with confidence, purpose, and distinction:

1. Make your voice heard in the classroom

At Ivy League and many other top schools, faculty-to-student ratios and class sizes tend to be small, allowing greater opportunity for you to establish yourself in the classroom and engage with your professors directly. Many students are weighed down by self-doubt and the desire to avoid making mistakes in their first semester, and as such, they are reluctant to raise their hands or offer their input. But one of the best ways to establish connections with professors is to use your voice in the classroom—college is about learning and growing, so don’t be afraid to get a question wrong or develop your ideas through conversation. Doing so will allow you to connect with others in class, build your intellectual skill set, and demonstrate your curiosity and earnest desire to learn.

2. Engage in activities outside of the classroom

Beyond academics, the Ivy League is known for vibrant opportunities to learn and connect with others outside of the classroom. Whether you're interested in student government, the performing arts, guest lectures, community service, or intramural athletics, there’s an opportunity to explore your passions. Join clubs and organizations that align with your interests and values, and consider taking on leadership roles to showcase your initiative and organizational skills. Engaging in extracurricular activities will not only enrich your college experience but also afford you the opportunity to get to know people outside of your major or residence hall.

One of the most valuable assets you'll gain during your time in the Ivy League is your network of peers, professors, and mentors. Take the time to connect with your classmates and professors, attend faculty office hours, and engage in meaningful discussions. One of the best ways to build your network is to simply put yourself out there—a student’s college years are the prime opportunity to connect with even the most distinguished scholars in their field, as they not only likely have connections through their institution, but professors (even at other universities) are more likely to respond to students who reach out for their advice. If one knowledgeable person doesn’t respond or have the bandwidth to advise you on a particular project or query, move on to the next person on your list!

4. Pursue Research, Internship, and Study Abroad Opportunities

The Ivy League offers unparalleled access to research, internship, and study abroad opportunities that can complement your academic studies and expand your horizons. For instance, Harvard offers a multitude of distinguished research positions for undergraduates, ranging from thesis research to research assistantships. The University of Pennsylvania sent students to 48 countries through their study abroad offerings in the 2022-2023 academic year. Meanwhile, Princeton offers more than 400 programs in 140 countries through which students may study abroad. Whether conducting groundbreaking research in your field of study or gaining real-world experience through internships, the plethora of opportunities available to you at an Ivy League university will not only enhance your resume but also deepen your understanding of your chosen field and prepare you for future success.

5. Carve out your niche

Finally, just as high school is a time to hone your passions and demonstrate them in action in your community, college is a more rigorous opportunity to identify and make a name for yourself within a niche industry or discipline. The best way to begin doing so is to have conversations with professors, graduate students, and older students in your field. Ask them questions like: Where do you see the field expanding or moving in the next five years? What are the most significant recent developments in this profession/field? What subjects do you think have been largely unexplored? What advice would you give to emerging scholars in this discipline? While pursuing a subject of true interest to you is indeed important, it is also important to consider how you will contribute uniquely to your subject of interest, and thereby maximize your odds of success in the job market.

Finally, keep in mind that you can (and should) begin practicing these skills in high school. The more you engage in these activities, the more natural they will be when you are on campus at a top university.

From Lakewood to Yale: Well-rounded William Kohut making history as first Ivy Leaguer

HEBRON – To put it mildly, William Kohut is creative.

Be it making a plastic out of thin air, beautiful music with his violin playing and singing or writing inspirational essays, the Lakewood High School senior always takes the next step to accomplish what he wants.

That talent and intuition has driven him to make history for his school, as this fall he will become its first Ivy Leaguer when he attends Yale University.

"He loves math and science, but it's not one-sided," said Candace Haudenschild, Kohut's Honors Chemistry and AP Chemistry teacher at Lakewood. "He's well-rounded. He's very inquisitive. When he learns something, he has to know everything about it. He has to know why, and does not take things at surface level."

"Well-rounded" may not do him justice.

He was president of Student Council, vice president of the National Honor Society, was active in drama club and choir and played violin at Denison University through the Suzuki program where he has played with the Martin Ensemble. Kohut also plays with the Newark-Granville Orchestra.

"He has been one of our go-to's for representing Lakewood High School," Principal Kevin Krier said. "He was one of our Newark Rotary Club students and was a student representative on our school board. He pushes himself in class and never takes a step back, doing a lot of hours after school with his AP Prep studies."

Kohut recently was Licking County's honoree for the 35th Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award from the Ohio Educational Service Center Association, representing Licking Regional ESC along with Tri-Valley's Alivia Sims in Muskingum County. He was nominated by Lakewood counselors Phil Sikorski and Valerie Kieffer.

"I was pretty happy. I was pretty excited," Kohut said. "I was not able to go (to the awards ceremony) because I was visiting Yale at that time, but it is quite the honor."

It was quite the process to become a "Yalie." There were only 2,000 students accepted for this fall at Yale, which was just 3.7%, the lowest ever. Kohut also visited other schools along the east coast, and narrowed it down to Harvard and Yale.

"Basically, it came down to my heart," William said. "We ran into this student at Yale, and he ended up getting us to where we needed to be, and even took us on a tour of the whole campus. His name was also William. You get that goal in your mind, that you want to be here and that you can do it. It's surreal. It's magnificent."

As part of the application process, Kohut had to write essays, and that's what set him apart, he said. He set his priority to get into Yale during the fall, and he stepped away from his extracurriculars for a couple of months. "I had a great team behind me," he said.

"I lost my father last year, Tim Kohut, to Parkinson's disease," he continued. "He was an Air Force veteran who worked in the Pentagon and served many countries. I wrote about him in my essays. It was a lot of self-exploration, and I learned a lot about myself."

His mother, Maryna, came to the United States from Ukraine, and he still has around 50 family members there, some in other countries. "I still talk to family daily," Kohut said. "Every two or three years, we go to Ukraine."

He couldn't be where he is without his guidance and knowledge from Lakewood.

"It's been a great thing to watch him progress and become a critical thinker," Haudenschild said. "He takes the data and works through problems and is not afraid to fail. He's learned to be resilient and keep going, to be proactive and think things out and apply what he's learned. We are mostly theory here, and he's taken what he's learned and put it into action. It's not just me. It's our whole staff, and we're really proud of him."

Liz Hawthorn, now a high school teacher, stoked his interest in science fair during the eighth grade. It has led to big things with his latest science project, which is actually more than that. He scored 40 out of 40 in the district, earned a superior rating and has won two other awards. It's called co-polymerization of carbon dioxide.

"I've basically created a polymer, or plastic, out of thin air," he said. "It's not the same as the plastic in water bottles. It has the consistency of maple syrup, and I've tested it. I've bonded it together with water and dry ice. The biggest thing is to get the cost further down and get sustainability."

To complete the project, he enlisted the help of Denison University chemistry and biochemistry professors Joe Reczek and Quintin Cheek.

Kohut is in line to be salutatorian of his Lakewood senior class, and is good friends with valedictorian Jacob Rafferty, who will be entering pre-law. "He also recently lost a parent," Kohut said.

He plans on being a doctor and making a difference in the world. He'll major in chemistry and will be on the pre-med track.

"The classes at Yale will open some wide doors for me," Kohut said. "There's a lot of different opportunities, such a variety of options now in the medical field."
