What is a Methodology?

In order to make decisions about your study such as when and how it is conducted it is important to think carefully about why you are considering those decisions. 

A methodology in a dissertation can vary depending on the subject you are studying so please see your dissertation supervisor for specific information about the expectations on your programme.

You may think- why do I need to think about these paradigms?

Paradigms are different ways of thinking depending on your values and beliefs. If you don't know what you believe or what you think is important it will be difficult to design a research question and decide on appropriate methods to discover an answer. 

It is important to discuss these topics with your supervisor who will be able to advise you and has an in depth knowledge of your subject discipline. They may potentially be able to discuss past topics that students have researched.

Qualitative methods are those collected without the use of numbers or statistics. 

Qualitative methods can lend themselves to the use of open ended questions in questionnaires or interviews. This may allow the subject to express their feelings or ideas and opinions. 

By gathering qualitative data it may be possible to justify a holistic idea about what participants think. However, it is not necessarily representative of the views of others and will not be repeatable as it is a snapshot of what people think in those particular circumstances. 

Results from your qualitative study may be difficult to generalise as the results may not be replicable in different settings. However, they can result in informed data from participants that has real benefits for the specific setting. 

Quantitative research methods are research studies that aim to produce numerical data. It may be useful to analyse data that can be displayed in graphs, charts and numerical tables and may be easier to understand than by looking at words alone. 

Quantitative research is typically used in scientific disciplines and research typically aims to be representative meaning it can be easily repeated and get the same results. 

By producing quantitative research it may be possible to gain an understanding of different environments as the knowledge gained may be applied to different settings to make generalisations. However, if small numbers are investigated in the study they may not be representative of the rest of the population. It depends on the scope of the study. 

Mixed methods research means undertaking research using elements of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. 

This may be relevant if you want to discover a combination of peoples opinions on an issue and facts about their relation to the event or situation you are researching. 

For example, you may include a combination of open and closed questions in an interview or questionnaire to establish the age of a participant and also how they felt in a situation. This may enable you to make connections between answers from particular participants and it may result in data presented in graphs or charts and qualitative research in tables coded by themes based on what the participants discussed. 

When deciding on a research project it is important to gain ethical approval when collecting any original data. This is so that you can consider the potential impact of the questions you are asking on the participants. Your supervisor will guide you through the ethical approval process. 

Depending on the research you may need written consent from participants or from responsible others if the person you are researching cannot read and write or understand what is being asked of them. It is important that participants in any study also understand that they can withdraw at any time if they change their mind. 

Any data collected needs to be kept safe and deleted appropriately to maintain confidentiality. 

It is important to justify exactly why you are including particular questions or observing a situation- how does the method chosen help you to answer your overall question?

How to find out about Conferences/Conference proceedings:

• You can search for Conferences and proceedings on Zetoc
• Conference Alerts  – search for conferences in your subject. You will usually be linked to the conferences official website which may include details of proceedings, or even provide papers after the event for free. Sometimes conference papers are published in a journal volume or in a book so you may try a combination of Google Scholar, Discover and the Library Catalogue.
