It isn't easy to choose a good topic without a precise informative essay definition. In short, an informative essay for college aims to educate a reader on a particular topic. Such academic papers may focus on defining a specific term by providing "how-to" tips, comparing and contrasting something, or explaining and analyzing information. Such piece of writing does not present a writer's opinion and never persuades the reader .

To choose a winning topic for an informative essay , it's not necessarily to spend a decent amount of time. The clue to any superb informative essay is an in-depth and narrow subject. A good topic has to be engaging both to the writer and the reader. For example, the essay written about chess or football may be of great interest to you, though it may be boring to your reader. Remember, you should captivate your audience by digging deep into the selected research area.

Follow these steps to choose an interesting, informative essay topic.

Identify Your Interests and Expertise

Begin by considering subjects that genuinely interest you. Your enthusiasm will shine through in your writing, and you're more likely to enjoy the research process.

For instance, if you're passionate about technology, you might explore the evolution of smartphones or the impact of artificial intelligence.

Consider Your Audience

Think about who will be reading your essay. Tailor your topic to your audience's interests and level of understanding.  For example, if you're writing for fellow students, you might choose a topic like "The Benefits of Mindful Studying Techniques."

Evaluate the Scope of Information

Relevance to Current Trends or Issues

Balance Uniqueness and Significance

For example, "The Forgotten Art of Handwriting: Its Relevance in the Digital Age" combines uniqueness with cultural relevance.

Personal Connection or Experience

If applicable, consider incorporating a personal connection or experience into your topic. This adds a unique perspective and can make your essay more relatable.

For instance, "Overcoming Stage Fright: A Personal Journey" can blend personal experience with informative insights.

Check Assignment Guidelines

Always refer to any guidelines provided by your instructor. Ensure that your chosen topic aligns with the assignment requirements, such as length, format, and specific instructions.

Even if it is not against them, witnessing domestic violence  causes long-term psychological effects. Your essay could touch on this serious social issue and explore the long-term effects of domestic violence on the children in these homes.

After exploring the effects, you could take your essay further by discussing potential solutions to the problem. Include ways to help the children overcome their challenges to be healthier adults in these situations.

The amount of time students spend on social media is increasing dramatically year after year, with the average currently sitting at around nine hours of media use per day . The pandemic significantly increased this, as social platforms became the primary way students could stay in contact during the lockdown. Your essay can explore how social media impacts adolescents.

Keep in mind that there may be some positive impacts to counter any negatives you find. While social media opens the door to cyberbullying and self-esteem issues, it can also give students a platform to discuss the social issues that are important to them and to connect remotely with friends who do not live nearby. Provide a balanced view in your informative essay.

Global warming is one of the most severe environmental concerns of our time , and many government initiatives aim at fixing the problem. However, not all of these work well. Your essay could look at the data to see which initiatives work and do little to help the problem.

As you look at this essay topic idea, thoroughly research to get to the heart of the matter. Be honest about what you see that works and what is not working to make a difference.

Informative Essay Topics: Does plastic surgery improve body image and self esteem?

Your essay could explore whether or not these surgeries helped patients enjoy better self-esteem and an improved body image.

If you come into this topic with a preconceived notion, consider that statistics show cosmetic surgery improves does improve body image for a large percentage of patients. After discussing that fact, you could further look at what makes someone a good candidate for effective, image-boosting cosmetic surgery.

Every day in America, around 90% of adults will consume caffeine. Is this an addiction, and if it is, does it represent a serious problem? Answering these questions in your essay could make for an engaging report.

Caffeine is a stimulant, and it can be addictive. Look at the statistics and the effects of caffeine addiction in writing your essay. Then, decide whether or not this is a serious issue, and if it is, decide what you will do about it.

A lot of published work writes about the negative impact of video games on higher education and overall academic performance. Still, some recent research indicates that it is not as damaging as once thought. This essay looks at the pros and cons of video game use for students. Highlight what needs to happen to make video games helpful and not harmful to student academic performance. For instance, you may find that time limits and game choice directly correlate to video games being helpful to students, so write about that.

When you look back at the atrocities during World War II, it is easy to wonder how Hitler could deceive people so fully and kill millions of his enemies in concentration camps, but exactly how did this happen? In your essay, research and dissect the propaganda, political scene, and media use of the era to determine how the dictator gained the general population’s trust and gained the ability to carry out these heinous acts.

This is a great informative essay topic because it has many different areas to explore. You will look at the society of the day and the political aspirations of the Hitler regime.

Informative Essay Topics: The health benefits of vegetarianism

Many people choose to follow a vegetarian diet because of ethical and moral beliefs about eating meat, but are there health benefits to this lifestyle? This idea is a great topic to explore in an informative essay, especially if you do not personally follow this lifestyle. You can research the health benefits and then conclude for yourself.

Around 10% of Americans follow a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, so discuss why that is in your essay. If you determine there are health benefits to vegetarianism, make sure you talk about how to avoid any potential problems with the lifestyle, such as lack of protein.

Schools that adopt a school uniform policy often help keep students on a level playing field, avoiding problems with bullying due to clothing choices, but does a school uniform improve student self-image? You can look into this as you write about this interesting topic.

Uniforms can reduce bullying and promote healthier friendships amongst students. However, they may not be a perfect solution, as bullies who are determined to bully will find a way to do so. Explore both sides of this issue as you discuss the topic.

Illegal immigration is another hot social issue, and many people think that the influx of illegal immigrants is hurting the U.S. economy. Yet if you look at the research surrounding this topic, you will find that it is less impactful than you might think. Some people argue that immigrants, even illegal ones, are helping the economy .

This topic is a good informative essay topic because it is controversial . The controversy makes it engaging. Be sure to back your thesis statement with plenty of facts and research because you are writing an informative essay, not a persuasive one.

Many initiatives are in place to curb gun violence in the United States, which contribute to good ideas for essay writing. One thing you can consider is whether or not these rules work. Do criminals follow gun laws, or does limiting the number of guns in the community impact rates of violence?

This essay or research paper topic needs to have plenty of facts, especially because it is controversial. Research the truth behind gun control laws to come to a conclusion that serves as your thesis statement, then back that statement up with facts.

Tip: If writing an essay sounds like a lot of work, simplify it. Write a simple 5 paragraph essay instead.

If you are finding it hard to choose topics for an informative essay, follow the below-given steps.

1. Brainstorm Ideas

The first step that a writer takes to decide a topic is to brainstorm ideas. If your instructor does not assign you a topic, think of interesting ideas. The best trick is to analyze your passions and see what you are interested in telling the audience about.

Another way is to pick something relevant to your field. For example, if you are a science student, you can search for interesting discoveries or theories to write your informative essay.

2. Identify the Audience

Determining the audience can help select the topic as well. When you know who you are writing for and what they expect from the essay. It gets easier to select a topic idea.

For example, if your audience is your instructor, impress him by choosing theories and other discoveries related to their field.

3. Search for Credible Sources

If you fail to find these sources for your topic, reconsider the topic idea.

4. Form a Strong Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is directly related to the topic as well. It is a stance that a writer takes to discuss the topic, and the whole essay content will revolve around it. A strong essay topic will help the writer develop a good thesis statement as well.

5. Finalize the Topic

Passing your raw idea from the above filters will help you finalize the topic. The end product that you will receive will be the ideal and the best topic. With this, you can begin writing your informative paper.

In this guide, we’ll delve into key strategies and techniques to help you craft compelling and informative essays that captivate your readers’ attention and convey your message effectively.

Understanding the Informative Essay

Before embarking on your writing journey, it’s crucial to grasp the essence of informative essays. Unlike persuasive or argumentative essays, which aim to sway the reader’s opinion, informative essays primarily seek to educate and inform. These essays present factual information in a clear, concise, and engaging manner, devoid of personal bias or subjective viewpoints. By adhering to this objective stance, you can maintain credibility and authority in your writing.

Selecting a Compelling Topic

The foundation of a successful informative essay lies in the choice of an intriguing and relevant topic. Whether you’re exploring historical events, scientific phenomena, or societal issues, opt for subjects that pique your interest and offer ample scope for exploration. Conduct thorough research to ensure the availability of credible sources and sufficient information to support your discussion. Additionally, consider your target audience and their level of familiarity with the topic to tailor your essay effectively.

Structuring Your Informative Essay

A well-organized structure is essential for conveying information effectively in your essay. Begin with an introduction that provides context and previews the main points you’ll cover. Follow this with a series of body paragraphs, each focusing on a distinct aspect or subtopic related to your chosen subject. Use topic sentences to introduce each paragraph’s main idea and support it with evidence, examples, and relevant data. Finally, conclude your essay by summarizing key points and reinforcing the significance of your topic.

To craft an effective introduction for an informative essay, focus on engaging your readers while providing essential context.

7 Steps for Writing an Informative Essay

  • Choose Your Topic: If you're given the freedom to choose your topic, opt for something you're passionate about and can explain effectively in about five paragraphs. Begin with a broad subject area and gradually narrow it down to a specific topic. Consider conducting preliminary research to ensure there's enough information available to support your essay.
  • Do Your Research: Dive deep into your chosen topic and gather information from reliable sources. Ensure that the sources you use are credible and can be referenced in your essay. This step is crucial for building a solid foundation of knowledge on your topic.
  • Create an Outline: Once you've collected your research, organize your thoughts by creating an outline. Think of it as a roadmap for your essay, briefly summarizing what each paragraph will cover. This step helps maintain coherence and ensures that you cover all essential points in your essay.
  • Start Writing: With your outline in hand, begin drafting your essay. Don't strive for perfection on the first attempt; instead, focus on getting your ideas down on paper. Maintain an objective and informative tone, avoiding overly complex language or unnecessary embellishments.
  • Revise Your Draft: After completing the initial draft, take a break before revisiting your work. Read through your essay carefully, assessing how well your arguments are supported by evidence and ensuring a smooth flow of ideas. Rewrite any sections that require improvement to strengthen your essay's overall coherence and clarity.
  • Proofread: Once you've revised your essay, thoroughly proofread it to catch any spelling or grammar errors. Additionally, verify the accuracy of the facts and information presented in your essay. A polished and error-free essay reflects positively on your attention to detail and credibility as a writer.
  • Cite Your Sources: Finally, include a citations page to acknowledge the sources you've referenced in your essay. What’s Covered:

Narrative essays vs. analytical essays, how to pick the right narrative essay topic, elements of a strong narrative essay, engaging narrative essay topics for high schoolers, where to get your narrative essay edited for free.

Narrative essays are an extensive form of writing that gives readers the opportunity to follow along as a person goes through a journey or sets of experiences. Rather than providing analytic insight, narrative essays simply share a story and offer a first-person account. These essays may seem easy to write at first, but it takes a certain finesse to write a narrative essay that is interesting, cohesive, and well-researched. Whether you’re looking for a unique topic to write about, or just want some new inspiration, CollegeVine is here to help! These 50 narrative essay topics are engaging, unique and will have you writing in no time.

A narrative essay is a great way to express your personal experiences and opinions, but it is important to remember that this type of essay is different from an analytical paper. In a narrative essay, you do not need to provide background information or explain your thoughts and feelings; instead, you simply tell a story. It’s important to avoid too much telling in your writing; instead, use creative details and vivid imagery to make readers feel as if they are actually right there with you.

Where You Will Encounter Narrative Essays

This type of essay is typically encountered in high school, where students may be required to write personal statements to prepare for their Common App essay . Narrative essays are also commonly seen in AP Language and Composition. Therefore, it’s important you are aware of the style because you are bound to have a narrative essay assignment.

Of course, before you start writing, it is important to pick the right essay topic. There are many factors involved in the process of picking the perfect narrative essay topic for your story.

You should always choose a topic that you are passionate about, since writing on something you care about will make the process much easier. Not only will it be more interesting to create your paper around something that truly interests you, but it will also allow you to fully express yourself in your essay. You also want to be sure that the topic has enough material to work with. If your chosen topic is too short, you will not have enough content to write a complete paper. For example, if you are writing about your experience getting lost at the mall, make sure that you have enough information to work with to craft an engaging narrative.

The best topic for an engaging narrative essay is one that focuses on showing versus telling, has a clear structure, and provides a dialogue. These elements come together to form an engaging narrative essay. Regardless of what subject you pick, any topic may be turned into a fascinating, A+ worthy narrative using the tips below.

Show, Don’t Tell

To write a good narrative essay, it’s important to show, not tell. Instead of simply informing your audience, show them what you mean. For example, instead of saying “I was nervous,” you could say “My heart began to race and my stomach filled with butterflies.” Also make sure to use sensory details, such as sights, sounds and tastes, and include a personal reflection at the end of your narrative.

Begin with a Strong Opening Line

A good narrative essay will begin with an attention-grabbing opening line. But make sure to avoid common clichés, such as “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Instead, come up with something original and specific to you and your situation. For example: “My pre-calc teacher was obsessed with circles. I mean, he even used circular note cards.” Or, “It all started the day my mom brought home a guinea pig.”

Follows a Three-Act Structure

A strong narrative essay follows the same three-act structure as other essays. But in order to make it interesting, you’ll need to come up with a creative way to break things down into sections. For example, using the guinea pig example from above, you could write the following:

  • Act 1 – Introduction: The day my mom brought home a guinea pig.
  • Act 2 – Conflict: The day I had to say goodbye to my beloved pet.
  • Act 3 – Conclusion: Looking back at how much I miss him now that he’s gone.

Conclude with Personal Reflection

To conclude your narrative essay, you’ll want to explain what this specific experience taught you or how you’ve changed. For example, upon realizing that her pre-calc teacher was obsessed with circles, the writer of the previous example begins to notice circular shapes everywhere. Another way to conclude your narrative essay is by touching on how this experience impacted you emotionally. For example, after losing his guinea pig, the writer explains how much he missed it.

Use Dialogue

Include a conversation in your essay to make it come alive. For example, instead of simply saying that you met a new friend, talk about how you introduced yourselves or what they were wearing when you met them.

100 Informative Essay Topics

Good informative essay topics are hard to come by. For lots of students, it feels like everything has already been explored so many times that finding an interesting subject has become impossible. This is a big problem because the choice of a topic is the first layer of foundation a future essay should have. If you made a bad choice, your research is going to bore you along with your audience. It’ll have uninspiring facts and irrelevant findings.

Informative essay is a piece of writing where you present certain information to your readers, expanding their knowledge, and explaining an issue in a detailed way. It’s important because it is objective — there is no need to argue with the opposition, refute their counter-points, or defend a view you might not even share simply because the task requires you to demonstrate the power of your conviction. As opposed to it,  informative writing  allows a writer to investigate a phenomenon in depth while readers get an opportunity to learn more about it. There are a ton of themes students could choose for their research, but picking something interesting, manageable, and educational is far more difficult. That’s why we’ve prepared this list with 100 best topics.

How to Find the Best Topic for Informative Essay

The process of looking for a topic takes time, but luckily, there are easy tips that could help students do it more quickly. We outlined some of them below. Consider them when faced with a choice, and before you know it, your inspiration will increase to a surprising extent.

  • Explore what you like . If you think academic essays are boring and that looking for a good topic is useless, don’t get discouraged — it’s far more possible than you think! Interest in a subject is important for success, and you could achieve it by making a synthesis of your hobbies. Combine your latest points of interest, talk with friends, look over the books you’ve read, and then make the topic sound academic! With creativity present, you won’t face any troubles. Imagine that you love ‘Twilight’, but your essay is on old English literature. Well, why don’t you choose among Bella’s favorite books to research? This way, you’ll explore a part of your hobby while sticking to requirements!
  • Check if there is research available . A potential drawback of essays is that people have to support their content with sources. If you’re writing a business report, you cannot just fill it with your own thoughts, so if no verified research is published about this topic, you won’t go far. That is why you should check it in advance.
  • Assess the scope of work adequately.  Don’t go overboard with your creativity — if this is just a regular analysis essay, pick a topic with medium complexity. You wouldn’t want to spend days or weeks composing one single paper simply because you wanted your work to be extra impressive!

Define Informative

To provide information. To give out important facts . To present useful knowledge that is being asked.

Define Informative Essay

An informative essay is just another of the different categories of an essay writing . But the difference of this type and kind is that it talks about educating your audience on what topic you chose to talk about.

Function of an Informative Essay

The function of this type of essay is to give out information on a topic. You use an informative essay to analyze facts. However, they do not represent a person’s opinion or to persuade your readers.

Format to Writing an Informative Essay

When you are writing an informative essay , there are steps, guides or rules and format to doing so. Listed below is the format in which you must follow in order to write a good informative essay. The first thing to remember when writing one, is the:

  • Title:  Write the title of your essay. Your titles can be anything as long as they fit as informative.  Some samples of essay titles you can talk about are
  •  The Pandemic
  •  Vaccinations
  •  Same sex Marriage
  • Childhood Marriages
  • Introduction: Once you have chosen your title, you may begin to write your introduction. Now you may be thinking how do I make this into an essay? What do I add in the introduction? In the beginning of your essay, you must introduce your topic. Do not immediately state the statistics of your topic. That is reserved in the body of your essay. Your introduction is merely to open the idea of talking about the chosen topic. Say example if you wish to talk about drug abuse, you do not immediately state the full statistics of drug abuse, rather, you introduce the topic, add a little quote or a saying about it.
  • Body:  The body of the essay is where you place your statistics report about the topic you chose. When writing the body, remember to put factual and true information. There is no second guessing when writing an informative essay. Every little fact must be true and is supported by known facts. If you ever write something that may not be true or is slightly true, your readers may assume that what you are saying is correct. Also, in the body of the essay, this is where your analytical thinking comes to place. Add them.
  • Conclusion:  In your conclusion, you must summarize everything from what you have written from the body. Make your own conclusion and your own thought or opinion about it.

Tips on Writing an Informative Essay

  • Think: Ask yourself what you wish to write. Ask yourself if you can gather the correct information to support your essay.
  • Draft: Start by writing your draft. This will help you gather your thoughts, ideas and facts before writing the actual essay. By using a draft, this will help in the long run.
  • Search : Do your research. This is important in an informative essay. You cannot simply guess the exact number or the correct information without doing your personal research. Also, research can help you know and understand about your topic.

In the body of my essay, does my information have to be factual?

Yes. As this is an informative essay, you must be writing about actual, factual and true information. Unlike another type of essay, this type has to be written with true facts and not fiction.

Can my essay be short or does it have to be long?

A high school essay like this one has its minimum word count will always be 300 and a maximum of 1000. Your essay may be around 300 to 400 words and that is still okay. As long as you reached the minimum word count.

Do I need to site the source of where I got my information?

Yes. You must site the sources of each information used in your essay.

How do I introduce my topic?

State a few general information about your topic. But do not give out everything in your introduction. The body of your essay is where you are able to specify and write what is needed.

There you have it. The format and the guidelines to writing your informative essay. When you write the numbers or the information for this type of essay, do not forget to site what source you took it from. Also do not forget that any type of high school essay the word count must always be a minimum of 300 words but not more than 1,000 words. Drafting before you write your real essay can also save you a lot of time since you only need to take from what you have written and write it to the actual essay. Remembering the tips and format to writing an informative essay will help you in the long run.

Do you need to write a persuasive essay but aren’t sure what topic to focus on? Were you thrilled when your teacher said you could write about whatever you wanted but are now overwhelmed by the possibilities? We’re here to help!

Read on for a list of 113 top-notch persuasive essay topics, organized into ten categories. To help get you started, we also discuss what a persuasive essay is, how to choose a great topic, and what tips to keep in mind as you write your persuasive essay.

What Is a Persuasive Essay?

In a persuasive essay, you attempt to convince readers to agree with your point of view on an argument. For example, an essay analyzing changes in Italian art during the Renaissance wouldn’t be a persuasive essay, because there’s no argument, but an essay where you argue that Italian art reached its peak during the Renaissance would be a persuasive essay because you’re trying to get your audience to agree with your viewpoint.

Persuasive and argumentative essays both try to convince readers to agree with the author, but the two essay types have key differences. Argumentative essays show a more balanced view of the issue and discuss both sides. Persuasive essays focus more heavily on the side the author agrees with. They also often include more of the author’s opinion than argumentative essays, which tend to use only facts and data to support their argument.

All persuasive essays have the following:

  • Introduction: Introduces the topic, explains why it’s important, and ends with the thesis.
  • Thesis: A sentence that sums up what the essay be discussing and what your stance on the issue is.
  • Reasons you believe your side of the argument: Why do you support the side you do? Typically each main point will have its own body paragraph.
  • Evidence supporting your argument: Facts or examples to back up your main points. Even though your opinion is allowed in persuasive essays more than most other essays, having concrete examples will make a stronger argument than relying on your opinion alone.
  • Conclusion: Restatement of thesis, summary of main points, and a recap of why the issue is important.

What Makes a Good Persuasive Essay Topic?

Theoretically, you could write a persuasive essay about any subject under the sun, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should. Certain topics are easier to write a strong persuasive essay on, and below are tips to follow when deciding what you should write about.

It’s a Topic You Care About

Obviously, it’s possible to write an essay about a topic you find completely boring. You’ve probably done it! However, if possible, it’s always better to choose a topic that you care about and are interested in. When this is the case, you’ll find doing the research more enjoyable, writing the essay easier, and your writing will likely be better because you’ll be more passionate about and informed on the topic.

You Have Enough Evidence to Support Your Argument

Just being passionate about a subject isn’t enough to make it a good persuasive essay topic, though. You need to make sure your argument is complex enough to have at least two potential sides to root for, and you need to be able to back up your side with evidence and examples. Even though persuasive essays allow your opinion to feature more than many other essays, you still need concrete evidence to back up your claims, or you’ll end up with a weak essay.

For example, you may passionately believe that mint chocolate chip ice cream is the best ice cream flavor (I agree!), but could you really write an entire essay on this? What would be your reasons for believing mint chocolate chip is the best (besides the fact that it’s delicious)? How would you support your belief? Have enough studies been done on preferred ice cream flavors to support an entire essay? When choosing a persuasive essay idea, you want to find the right balance between something you care about (so you can write well on it) and something the rest of the world cares about (so you can reference evidence to strengthen your position).

It’s a Manageable Topic

Bigger isn’t always better, especially with essay topics. While it may seem like a great idea to choose a huge, complex topic to write about, you’ll likely struggle to sift through all the information and different sides of the issue and winnow them down to one streamlined essay. For example, choosing to write an essay about how WWII impacted American life more than WWI wouldn’t be a great idea because you’d need to analyze all the impacts of both the wars in numerous areas of American life. It’d be a huge undertaking. A better idea would be to choose one impact on American life the wars had (such as changes in female employment) and focus on that. Doing so will make researching and writing your persuasive essay much more feasible.

Tips for Writing a Strong Persuasive Essay

After you’ve chosen the perfect topic for your persuasive essay, your work isn’t over. Follow the three tips below to create a top-notch essay.

Do Your Research

Your argument will fall apart if you don’t fully understand the issue you’re discussing or you overlook an important piece of it. Readers won’t be convinced by someone who doesn’t know the subject, and you likely won’t persuade any of them to begin supporting your viewpoint. Before you begin writing a single word of your essay, research your topic thoroughly. Study different sources, learn about the different sides of the argument, ask anyone who’s an expert on the topic what their opinion is, etc. You might be tempted to start writing right away, but by doing your research, you’ll make the writing process much easier when the time comes.

Make Your Thesis Perfect

Your thesis is the most important sentence in your persuasive essay. Just by reading that single sentence, your audience should know exactly what topic you’ll be discussing and where you stand on the issue. You want your thesis to be crystal clear and to accurately set up the rest of your essay. Asking classmates or your teacher to look it over before you begin writing the rest of your essay can be a big help if you’re not entirely confident in your thesis.

Consider the Other Side

You’ll spend most of your essay focusing on your side of the argument since that’s what you want readers to come away believing. However, don’t think that means you can ignore other sides of the issue. In your essay, be sure to discuss the other side’s argument, as well as why you believe this view is weak or untrue. Researching all the different viewpoints and including them in your essay will increase the quality of your writing by making your essay more complete and nuanced.
