One fine day while going to school, we saw a big poster pasted on the walls, announcing the arrival of the Grand Arvind Circus to our city. We saw a big tent being pitched on the parade ground. I made up my mind to see the show on the very first day. My friend, Vijay accompanied me.

Seating arrangements had been made under a huge canopy. We had got two chairs near the arena as possible. More visitors poured in soon and the canopy was fully packed.

The show began with the appearance of two clowns’ dressed in multi-colored clothes. They made jokes and played such tricks on each other that one could not help to laugh. Then the gymnasts came. They showed wonderful and awe-inspiring feats. After this came some cyclists. All were riding on one wheel. They also performed many interesting feats.

One of them who rode a bicycle did paddling with their hand instead of with their feet and made it run very fast. They were followed by two ladies who danced on the fine steel wire. They had umbrellas in their hands to balance their body weight.

Then came four horses with four young men dressed in white, riding on their backs. The band began to play and the horses went around dancing in a tune to the music.

The band stopped and the riders stood up on the back of their horses which at once began to gallop. And the horses galloped, the riders jumped from horse to horse. They would stop all of a sudden and then break into gallop again.

They were followed by two elephants that played their wonderful tricks by turning in the midst of loud cheers. One elephant stood on his legs, putting the other two on a big stool, and saluted the audience with his trunk. Then he held a book on his trunk and seemed to read it.

After some time and last of all came two lions in their cages. As the door of the cage was opened they rushed out with a great roar. We were greatly frightened to bear their terrible roars, but the well-dressed ringmaster with a whip in his hand stood calm.

He ordered them to do many an odd job and it was a marvel to see they dare not disobey him. If ever they hesitated to do his bidding, he whipped them like beasts of burden.

The lions were made to pass through the ring of fire and to drink with lamb from the same vessel. The lambs were also made to go over the bodies of the lions.

It was, perhaps, their greatest achievement. When the show was over, some boys and pretty girls came there and sang the National Anthem, All stood up while the National Anthem was being sung.

It’s a place I love to visit. There have been numerous circus shows I have been to. However, my first circus experience has always been a memorable one.

My First Visit to a Circus

We live in a town where circus shows get organized once every five to six years. When I was six years old, my friends at school talked about an ongoing circus. I was excited to share this information with my family on my way home. Later that evening, my dad bought us the tickets for the show.

Even though I had heard a lot about the circus, I had never been to one before. This would be my first experience, and I wondered what kind of show it would be. The circus party was called the Vivian Circus. It was located at the far-stretched Nehru Maidan.

This show had been running for a week now. And it was known to gather a lot of crowds. As soon as we stepped onto the ground, I was amazed at its sight. The place looked like a wonderland. There was a huge tent in the middle, and it was decorated with beautiful tube lights.

Inside the tent, there were circular rows filled with benches and chairs. We went and sat in the front row. The entire time, I was anxiously waiting for the show to begin. Finally, it started at 8 p.m., and everything went silent for a second. At first, a band started to play. Then a group of gymnasts started showing their physical feats.

Meanwhile, many strange acts were presented. For the first time, I saw a monkey ride a bicycle. An elephant came and played football. The tiger jumped across a ring of fire. There were some thrilling performances as well. A man walked on the rope, and a girl climbed on a ladder without support.

There was a well of death where the motorcyclists performed dangerous stunts. Their act left us all spellbound. Then there were clowns in their funny costumes. The entire evening was filled with multiple shows, and it left me truly amazed.

Two downs, dressed in a colourful dress, appeared. Their faces were painted. They were wearing peak caps. The people started laughing after looking at them. Their silly jokes made everyone laugh.

Then came lions. They performed various tricks. They jumped through the burning rings. They saluted the audience by bowing their heads in every direction.

Many other dangerous and interesting items were performed. We enjoyed ourselves a lot in the circus.

Today in this essay presentation we are going to show you a example essay on a visit to a circus.

A week back, a traveling circus troupe had landed into my town to showcase their magical performances at the local amusement park.

Within a day we witnessed a voluminous circus tent being set up along with other small tents of games and illusions beside it. As we could not contain our excitement any longer, I and my friends booked tickets for the show on their first day itself.

Have arrived before time, we got the privilege to occupy front row seats where we could watch the circus without any obstacles or hindrances in our way.

The show started off with the renowned magician Barbosa Ross introducing himself and his troupe of gymnasts, trapeze artists, dancers, and pet animals.

We sat and watched the spectacle in awe as the ginormous tent flooded with colorful streaks of lights and music while the introduction took place. Artists came flying on paper-thin ropes, dancing in the air performing aerial stunts. Suddenly, darkness engulfed the tent as all the acts disappeared from the stage.

When the flashlights came back on, there stood a lion at the center of the stage in all its magnificent glory. As the crowd gasped in wonder, the lion shook its thick mane and gazed intently at all of its on-lookers.

Though we felt special and excited earlier about getting front row seats, the moment we saw the lion out in the open, we regretted our decision. While we started calculating and plotting ideas to run and avoid coming into the lion’s path if it went awry, the circus master started the performance.

We watched with disbelief as the stealth lion jumped through hoops of fire placed at a height with perfect precision and walked along the perimeter of the stage looking at the audience. Towards the end of his act, the lion showed off its power by letting out a booming roar and shaking its mane once again.

Next came in a mixed group of jugglers and dancers who weaved in and out of various formations and positions gracefully. Not one of them faltered or drop any of their props while performing.

Even though they kept juggling and dancing next to each other, they did not bump into each other even once. After a graceful and pinpoint show, the left giving up the stage to the world-famous magician.

Barbosa Ross took onto the stage to perform some classic tricks with his assistant. From making a rabbit and bird appear from inside him a hat to cutting and sawing his assistant to halves, he portrayed them all.

The highlight of Barbosa’s performance was when he called on a random member of the audience and hypnotized them.

He proceeded to make the audience member perform mind-blowing card tricks and juggling balls by his instructions alone. And when the lady came back to consciousness, she claimed to remember none of the above ever happening.

After performing a few more intriguing tricks that left us amazed, Barbosa left the stage onto the extremely talented trapeze artists. A fast-paced musical track started as they swung around in the air, performing backflips and somersaults in the open air.

Every time one of them left the rope and jumped on to another, the audience watched with bated breath at their skills and bravery. Towards the end of their performance, two more aerial artists joined the act.

The tent went completely dark and only the spotlights shined in these artists as they glided through the air from above our heads, rotating and dancing in spirals with colorful ribbons accentuating their every move.

They then proceeded to close the act with the famous soundtrack – Rewrite the stars from the screenplay – The greatest showman. And what a spectacular recreation it was!

Finally came in a pair of humongous elephants who balanced big bouncy rubber balls on the tips of their trunks and walked around the stage with their head in the air without colliding even once. As these majestic creatures moved around the stage gracefully, a monkey appeared to play and perform with them.

He zoomed and ran between the two, yelling war hoops and snatching their balls from them. He would keep taking the balls away to juggle them and the elephants would figure out ways to get them back. The expert act had all of us rolling with laughter and glee.

As the circus came to an end, the magician appeared on stage with the rest of the troupe to thank the audience for their support and appreciation. As they troupe started to leave, the entire tent starting applauding for the troupe. What a great circus it was!

Essay on A Visit to a Circus

Last Sunday I went to see the circus with my family. It was on the Red Fort ground. The circus tent was brightly illuminated with electric lights. Seats had been arranged in a circular fashion.

A big crowd had assembled there. Exactly at 7 o’clock, the show began. We were full of thrill and excitement. First came in seven men dressed in pink blue, red and a girl riding on horseback.

The band was in attendance and all the horses went round in a circle dancing to the tune of music. Then the riders got up and stood aside directing the tricks to be shown by the horses.

The girl struck the whip and the horses galloped in a circle, the riders standing on their backs. It was indeed very wonderful. Then elephants were brought in. They performed funny tricks.

One by one they crossed a narrow bridge They stood up on their hind legs and danced in a row. One of them balanced his forelegs on the back of the next in front of him. They also played football.

Next came three very funny clowns with painted faces. One was dressed like a monkey, the other like a lion and the third like a village girl. We children thought at first that they were animals that could both speak and walk. They made us roar with laughter by their funny tricks.

But the most wonderful part was played by lions. It was really a splendid scene to see them do things unimaginable in actual life. There stood the lion-trainer with a strong whip in his hand.

There were three lions which were made to stand in a row, and a goat was made to jump from the back of one lion to another’s back. It was really surprising to see all this.

There were athletes too, who held us spellbound with their gymnastic feats. They climbed to the roof of the tent by means of a ladder and then exchanged places in a daredevil manner We returned home, full of excitement and with a sense of horror

Over the years circuses have been considered one of the most entertaining places of all time, but what happens when the show ends and everybody goes home? On the outside circuses seem magical and full of fun. People would think that they are harmless, but in reality they’re filled with abuse, fear, and neglect. While most famous shows claim that the animals are well kept and treated fairly, many sources seem to believe otherwise. Most of the performing animals belong in the wild where they can run free.

Circuses are traveling constantly which means that the animals are too. The animals are kept in cages that aren’t even spacious enough for them. Most people would think that the trainers or workers would clean the cages, but they don’t. The cages are filthy and filled with the animals’ own feces and urine. Most of the time, the animals aren’t even provided with access to food or water. They must wait until the train stops to be fed (“Circuses”).

Even after they have arrived to their destination they are still kept chained until it is their turn to perform.

The chains are kept short and don’t give the animals much room to move around (“Animal Defenders”). A traveling circus isn’t a suitable home for these animals. People would think that the animals would at least be treated with love and fairness, but they are treated quite opposite. Animals in the circus are beaten and abused.

It has been reported that trainers use sharp hooks, pitch forks, and even blow torches to train the elephants. Video footage of this cruel nonsense has been released in the past.

The videos include large cats being dragged, monkeys being kicked, and elephants being electrically shocked (“Circuses”). The circus is most certainly not a natural environment for the animals. They are taken from the wild by force. Most are even taken when they are just babies (“Animal Defenders”). Even though some would argue that the trainers would take care of the baby animals, they still need their mothers. Baby animals are in no condition to be trained to perform circus acts, especially because most of the acts performed in the circus wouldn’t be performed by the animals on their own.

A tiger would never have to jump through a flaming hoop in their natural habitat and an elephant wouldn’t stand on its hind legs for its own excitement (“Enjoy the”). Animals should be left in the wild where they belong. Even though all circuses argue that they have their animals under control and that the circus is a safe place for everyone, many sources have proved them wrong. Most Circuses do not have frequent inspections to make sure that the environment is safe or that the animals are secured safely (“Enjoy the”).

Over the years many animals have gotten loose and have injured or killed people. Human injuries lead to the animals being painfully put to death (“Big-Top Cruelty”). A lot of the animals in circuses carry diseases from the wild. They can also acquire disease through the filth that they live in. Statistics show that many circuses have allowed animals with various diseases to perform in their shows (“Enjoy the”). The majestic adventure the circus seems to be is only a false picture painted by the circus industry.

The animals aren’t having fun while they’re performing. They only perform because they live in fear (“Circuses”). Even though the circus may seem like the most wonderful place on earth there are many other places that are just as great. There are many animal free circuses around the country. They include acts involving clowns, acrobats, jugglers, and many more. All of these are just as exciting and don’t involve cruel training or unsafe environments for the audience.

Essay On Circus

Circus is a very good means of entertainment. A few days back the “Great Indian Circus” had been to our city. I went to see this circus with my brother. He booked the tickets in advance. It was a Sunday. We reached there before time.

The main pavilion of the circus was huge. In addition, there were many small and big tents around. There was quite a lot of excitement near the main entrance. Huge posters advertising the circus were posted outside. Various acts of the circus were displayed on them. The main tent was decorated with colorful electric bulbs. Music was played on loudspeakers. As we entered in, we saw that the tent was full of spectators. A very nice seating arrangement was done. We sat in the front row. Soon the circus began.

Two jokers entered first. One was very tall and the other was very short. Their faces were painted and they were wearing funny dresses. They made people laugh with their actions and jokes. The jokers were followed by elephants , bears, horses and they performed various acts. The horses went round in a circle dancing to the tune of the music. The elephants performed pooja. Spectators were clapping loudly after each act.

Young boys and girls on swings were putting their lives at risk while performing amazing acts on the swing. One man threw four balls at once in the air and caught them artistically without dropping even one. Then a group of girls made a very tall pyramid by standing over each other. Then they did various acts on bicycles. The exercises done on one-wheeled cycles were very interesting.

The performance of the tigers was really amazing. The ringmaster performed this act with seven tigers. He made them walk in a line around the circus ring, made them sit on a small wooden stool, and made them walk on a narrow wooden plank. I was scared at that time. He also wrestled with the tiger . Sometimes he would use his hunter to calm down the tigers and they would immediately listen to him. I wondered as to how the ringmaster must have trained these wild animals? What measures he must have taken?

Circus is really a source of income for many. However, television and cinemas have reduced their popularity. Awareness of people towards animal rights has increased. Thus, the number of circuses has reduced these days. It will be so nice if we have a circus with only human beings as performers! I enjoyed the circus very much.

The film 'Circus' was produced in 1936 and it is a Soviet melodramatic comedy musical film. Grigori Aleksandrov and Isidor Simkov created this film after getting inspired by a comedy play. It is the reason that this film has humor and a story with some dramatic scenes. The scene which I am going to talk about in this paper is on the Marion, her husband Ivan and son Jimmy at circus. It can be analyzed from the particular scene that the camera work is highly innovative and the acting in that scene is highly appreciable. The scene starts when Ivan enters and shout loudly in the circus where Marion was performing. Ivan seems aggressive while holding his son Jimmy he rudely push away Marion from her child and gets busy in conversation with another man in the circus. Meanwhile, Jimmy walks away from Ivan and people sitting in the circus takes him and avoid giving him back to Ivan. In this scene, the camera work is appreciable in which expressions explain everything. It will not be incorrect to state that cinematic techniques that are used in this film clearly express moods and themes. The body language of Ivan and others from audience of the circus presents clear postures, gestures, and facial expressions. The elements of this scene are perfectly framed according to the camera height, angle and distance. The deep focus technique is also used to show the audience at the circus while presenting close-up of Ivan, Marion and Jimmy. It is easy to analyze from the scene that racism doesn’t matter when it comes to save a life of a child. It can be said that this scene helps to set the tone for the film. The reason is that this scene fit into the overall scope of the film as it is about the racism. When Jimmy being a victim of racism receives love from friendly soviet people. The circus hall is full of representatives of various Soviet ethnicities but they save the black baby boy from that aggressive man. Soviet people in favor of blacks are never shown in this entire film other than this scene. Therefore, this scene is integral to the plot of the film. The camera angles are also very clear that makes the conversations and dialogues easy to understand or interpret the entire film. The editing of the film is kinetic editing in which inappropriate humor is injected into the scene where everyone is laughing, whereas Ivan is in anger and shouting. However, the arrangement of the scene and the shot is from several camera angles simultaneously. It is the reason that this scene gives different experience and emotions. The different camera angles have different effects on viewers that make the scene more attractive (Jackson, 2012). When the army people try to save the child from Ivan the high-angle shot with low-angle shot technique is visibly used. At various points eye-level camera angle and the point of view shot technique can also be analyzed. It will not be incorrect to state that this scene contains several shots that leave psychological effects on the viewers. The interaction with the child in this scene is a touchy scene for all as it shows love and affections to the black baby boy. There are many points where the director has used close up, and medium close up shot (Simkov, 1936). While focusing on the framing of this scene, it can be said that the aggressiveness of the actor Ivan shows violence. Moreover, the dialogues Ivan exchange with Marion and other people at the circus are interesting, and the camera role makes the expression look even more interesting. Within the two minutes of scene many people are targeted. The editing work is done amazingly because it covers Marion’s condition backstage, Ivan expressions and body language, and black baby boy actions. The way camera angles capture things happening in that circus is incredible. While concluding the entire discussion on the chosen scene it can be said that in the short span of time different actions and reactions are organized in a logical manner. There are many points in that scene where the director draws the attention to the cinematic apparatus. The technical aspects of the scene make it easy to understanding the scene. Therefore, this will not be incorrect to state that the film successfully delivers the desired message and meanings by using a variety of camera techniques, dialogues, and emotions in two minutes. Moreover, with the right use of camera angles, mise-en-scene, framing, editing, etc. the chosen scene is the perfect example of good direction.

"Terminology Utilized" Deep focus: At the same time camera focuses on close objects as well as objects on distant places . Kinetic editing: in which inappropriate humor is injected into the scene. High-angle shot: the camera is placed above the horizon line titled down to view the subject. Low-angle shot: the camera is tilted up to view the subject. Eye-level shot: the camera is placed at the average height of an observer. It is also called a neutral shot.

Point of view shot: it is a shot that presents/highlight the specific point of view of the character.

Close up shot: this shot stress on the importance of the particular character on a particular scene. Medium close up shot: close of two or three people at a time. Camera angles: there are three angles low, high, tilt at which the camera points out any subject. mise-en-scene: it highlights the direction of the actors, placement of the camera and selection of the lenses.

Framing: it includes the camera angles and editing to make the picture perfect.

Editing: it assembles the successive shots to make up a film .

A Poet on Taylor Swift’s Complicated Embrace of Tortured Poets

W ho was the first tortured poet? Maybe the ancient Egyptian who wrote, sometime in the 15th century BCE, "My beloved stirs my heart with his voice. He causes illness to seize me.... My heart is smitten." Maybe the poet Catullus, whose heartbreaks lit up ancient Rome: "I hate and love," he explained in Latin, "and it's excruciating," or (depending on the translator) "it crucifies me." Petrarch's sonnets, in 14th century Italy, complained that love both scorched and chilled. Mary Wroth, a contemporary of Shakespeare, agreed: love made her "burn and yet freeze: better in hell to be."

All those poets felt tortured by erotic love—and their strife sometimes hurt other people, too, if they came too close. The trope of the tortured poet whose gifts would destroy him (or, less often, her) came about later, when European writers began to see poets as especially sensitive, anguished, or fragile. "We poets in our youth begin in gladness," William Wordsworth mused in 1802, "But thereof in the end come despondency and madness." That second line lengthens as if unfolding hard truth. A genuine poet in France might be a "poète maudit" ("cursed poet"), like Charles Baudelaire or Arthur Rimbaud, marked by fate, mental illness, or alcohol addiction. By the 20th century the type (or stereotype, really) could fit all manner of wild and self-destructive creators, especially men, from Dylan Thomas to the Doors' Jim Morrison.

By calling her new album The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift points back to this tradition. She also makes fun of it, comments on it, and rejects it, as the prose that accompanied the album implies. "There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed," Swift wrote in an Instagram post. "Our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it."

Seeing her work as ink on a page, not only as song in the air, Swift claims herself as a literary writer—the modern age’s most notorious poet. Fans first speculated that she appropriated the "tortured" mantle from the group chat co-run by her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, which Alwyn called "The Tortured Man Club.” Could be—but it’s so much more than that, and it might also point to other recent relationships . Taylor creates some distance between herself and the stereotype she invokes. "You're not Dylan Thomas, I'm not Patti Smith," Swift's title track declares. "This ain't the Chelsea Hotel. We're modern idiots." He's not that gifted, and she's not that dramatic. Or rather she's dramatic in a different, far more deliberate way: one that fits her own, always thoughtful, but rarely raw, art.

Swift also takes back for herself—and for other women artists—the power that supposedly comes from chronic distress, from feeling like a tortured mess. "You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me," Swift warns on "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" If she feels tortured and reacts with poetry, that's not endemic to poets; it's the logical consequence of a romance gone wrong and a live lived in public. "I was tame, I was gentle till the circus life made me mean,” she sings. “You caged me and then you called me crazy/ I am what I am 'cause you trained me.”

But if Swift has become the chair of the Tortured Poets Department, she didn't get there by being born this way: the rest of the department did it to her. Her barbed words, sharp hooks, and sarcastic replies are more like Wroth's burning and freezing than they are like Baudelaire's doom. They share, and make fun, of her own emotional extremes. "Whether I'm gonna be your wife or gonna smash up your bike I don't know yet," she explains on “imgunnagetyouback,” punningly. "But I'm gonna get you back”—either get you to come back to me, or get back at you. Her phrases present a feminist revenge, turning her pain into (what else?) song. "I cry a lot but I am so productive it's an art," she croons on one of the most upbeat new tracks “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” "You know you're good when you can even do it with a broken heart."

Like all Swift's albums, The Tortured Poet Department contains multitudes and multiple takes on the same situation, just as it contain several pop styles, from the 1980s-style synths in the album’s single “Fortnight,” composed with Post Malone, to the acoustic guitar and string sweeps of "The Albatross," created with reference to Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Wordsworth's ex-friend, a self-sabotaging poet for the ages). In "But Daddy I Love Him" Swift strikes back, with extra reverb, at fans who insist on telling her who to date and how. In "Down Bad" she encapsulates her toughest, most immature moments in elegant half-rhyme: "everything comes out teenage petulance. I might just die, it would make no difference." But Swift for most of the album, for all her passion and all her pain, knows better than to blow up her life for love. Like her character in "The Bolter," she knows how to save herself, even when love feels like drowning.

The tortured modern poet—the poète maudit—the trope that Swift's new album takes up and plays with and against, remains a powerful metaphor (she is no authority on literal torture, and never pretends to be one). Listeners who have been sorting through The Tortured Poets Department since both halves of it dropped, two hours apart, have already found our own favorites, mirrors for our own falls through thin ice.

It's surprising, even staggering, to see the range of her responses to love, to poetry, and to "torture." Sometimes she magnifies, even celebrates, her own and her characters' emotional turmoil. Other times (as in the title track) she makes fun of the way they, as would-be "tortured poets," cannot get out of their own heads. And sometimes—to quote another poet, William Butler Yeats—she mocks mockers after that, telling us to stop telling her what to do.

Always, though, she shows us the craft she shares with the great poets, and songwriters, of times past: the ability, as Yeats also put it, "to articulate sweet sounds together," and to "work harder than all these"—harder than anybody—at turning all those feelings into art.

Party Like It’s 1989

In the 1980s and ’90s, Dafydd Jones’s party shots captured Manhattan’s rich and powerful.

Nine years ago, while recovering from a serious health crisis, the British society photographer Dafydd Jones decided to return to his archive of negatives and print a few of his old party pictures. Mr. Jones had spent three decades documenting the social scenes of British and American upper classes for The Tatler, The New York Observer and Vanity Fair under Tina Brown and Graydon Carter, but the frenetic pace of society photography had never given him time to look back on his own work.

In 2020, he published his first book of these photos, “Oxford: The Last Hurrah.” It was a surprise hit, prompting Mr. Jones to look back at his nights in the 1980s and 1990s, when he rubbed shoulders with Manhattan’s rich and powerful. These pictures of a bygone era, both glitzy and seedy, have been gathered together for the first time in a new book, “New York: High Life / Low Life.”

Mr. Jones spoke via video chat from his studio in East Sussex, England. The conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.

In 1988, you left the London society circuit and moved to New York for a month. Why did you decide to uproot your life?

I’d never planned to be a social photographer. I just found myself in that situation and realized it was a really interesting world to photograph, and no one else was really covering it in a journalistic way. I was going to May balls in Cambridge, Oxford, Royal Ascot and the Derby, and there is a fixed calendar. I had a fantastic opportunity, but I suppose after you’ve been to Ascot eight times. …

Tina Brown invited me over for a month, just to see what it was like. I arrived at 4 o’clock in the afternoon at J.F.K. and went to a book launch at 6 o’clock that evening. It was a whole new world to be shooting for Vanity Fair.

Were the parties in New York very different from London?

I never did see anyone asleep at a party in New York, whereas in London, you’d always find someone dropping off. Years later, I realized: “Hang on, these people were all on something. That’s why they suddenly come to life at 1 o’clock when they ought to go home.”

People in New York were more paranoid about where they were sitting at a party. There were people around with loads of money, who’d made it very quickly. And there were some who were quite what I would call WASP-y — you know, So-and-So the Third — and they would always try and impress on me their American aristocratic credentials.

What do you think your subjects thought of you?

I probably was perceived as being excessively polite. And actually, that can get you quite a long way. In all sorts of situations, just being polite — nice, you know? That probably distinguishes me from some other photographers. At one party, I remember another photographer yelling abuse at the P.R. And I remember a photographer punching a P.R. person at an event I was photographing in New York. I had never seen that anywhere else.

Did you ever get into trouble for publishing something unflattering? Or were people less controlling of their image back then?

My editor, Richard Buckley, wanted me to go to the Madison Square Garden dog show and cover it all week. I said, “Aren’t there any parties happening or something, anything that’s a bit different for these dog people?”

At the party at Barbetta, they’d made the canapés to look like little dog biscuits or something. And the dogs did make a lunge, and there was a sort of incident between the dogs and canapés. And Brooke and Iris [Brooke Astor and Iris Love] happened to be standing together when it happened.

Tina Brown was the editor, and she just ran that picture. Afterward, they both asked for prints, Iris and Brooke. And Brooke said to me, “There’s such a funny expression on Dolly’s [her dachshund] face.”

And she looked me in the eye as she said it, and I knew she was thinking about her face as well. They were the epitome of High Life — kind of equivalent of New York royalty, really. But I can’t imagine if you did a picture like that today. People would be a lot more nervous about it appearing.

Most of the photographs feature the uptown social set, but you went downtown, too. There’s a photograph of Robert Mapplethorpe at his 42nd-birthday party, shortly before he died of AIDS. How did you find yourself there?

I just had it on my list: birthday party, Robert Mapplethorpe. I didn’t know he was ill. I got there, and it was already quite busy, a huge loft. I realized pretty quickly that there was a sort of down atmosphere. And I think I turned my flash off. It felt quite intrusive, being a photographer there. I could see he was ill. And I tried to take the nicest possible pictures of him, which actually weren’t what the magazine wanted. At the time, I thought I hadn’t done a good job because my pictures weren’t published, but I was happier within myself.

Some of the people in these photographs would become quite notorious: Rudolph Giuliani, Jeffrey Epstein, Donald Trump. What were your first impressions of these men?

When I first came across Donald Trump, I thought he seemed quite a brash, crude person, but I didn’t have anything particularly against him. In my introduction I mention that he gave a party for Benazir Bhutto [the former prime minister of Pakistan], and I’d got it wrong: It wasn’t his party. It was a party given by Reinaldo and Carolina Herrera for Benazir Bhutto at the Plaza. Donald demanded to know why she wasn’t staying at the Plaza, and he offered her a good deal the next time she wanted a hotel. I thought it was Donald’s party because that was the way he behaved, as if he was hosting Benazir.

Tell me about the photograph of Jeffrey Epstein from the opening of the Harley Davidson Cafe in 1993.

When I got there, there was this great scene outside. A crowd of people, and it was raining. Donald Trump was there with his children — that’s Donald on the left of Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein is on a balcony looking down below. He looked extraordinary — sort of wolflike, really, but he was, relatively speaking, a nobody. That picture was a striking image to me.

Is there an image that captures the essence of New York from that time?

My life in England as a social photographer was almost a kind of Bertie Wooster existence by comparison to New York. There was the AIDS crisis and the crack epidemic. I was pickpocketed on the subway, but I did love New York.

There was a sort of annual thing that used to happen, the elephants would come to the circus, and they’d come through the tunnel from Queens. It would happen quite late at night when there wasn’t much traffic or anyone around. And so I trailed along with the elephants, and they stopped to have a rest — I think this was 33rd Street — where there were sex shops and things, and the steam coming out of the manhole cover. It is a bit surreal, seeing elephants walking through Manhattan.

MAFS alum Briana Myles calls Denver reunion a ‘circus’ and says cast ruined their reputation

Several MAFS alums have shared their opinions about Season 17 of Married at First Sight, and the latest person to chime in was Briana Myles.

The Season 12 star, who gained a successful marriage from the eight-week experiment tuned in much like the rest of us to watch the reunion.

That’s a fitting description for the show as the women, clad in pink and still angry and bitter over their divorces, faced off against their ex-husbands.

At this point, viewers will never truly know which side is telling the truth because — as was their plan — many things transpired off-camera that we didn’t see.

The men claim they all came together at the beginning of the season and agreed to plot their storylines and deceive the experts, the producers, and the audience.

However, the women claim they were just blindly following their husbands.

Either way, the plan wasn’t smoothly executed and before the season ended, the cast started turning against each other, with little resolution even after the reunion.

MAFS alum Briana Myles calls the Denver reunion a ‘circus’

Briana Myles has been getting questions from fans of the show about the Denver cast amid all the drama that ensued.

So, during an Instagram Q&A, Briana gave her feedback on the two-part reunion.

“Overall I felt like the reunion was a circus ,” confessed Briana.

“I didn’t watch the season so I can’t really say if the season was a circus, but maybe I should go back and watch it, so I can understand why these people were acting like they were acting on the reunion,” she added.

Did the Season 17 cast ruin their reputation?

The cast — especially the men — wanted to look good on TV so they set their ridiculous plan in motion.

However, it backfired and now they’ll be known for being liars and deceivers.

“I think that a lot of them were trying not to ruin their reputation and they did that anyway,” opined Briana.

The expectant mama said there’s a way to express frustration on camera “without looking like a crazy a**hole.”

The MAFS alum reflected on her experience in Season 12 and confessed that there were many times during filming that she was frustrated with the process.

“But I didn’t ruin my reputation, I didn’t look crazy,” said Briana.

“There were a few times where I felt like I could’ve turned up, but I didn’t, because for what? I’m a look crazy, it’s gonna be on me,” she concluded.
