A cat and a dog are both domesticated animals, even though they do not belong to the same family or species. The cat belongs to the feline family, while the dog belongs to the canine family. There are various similarities, as well as differences, between the cat and the dog. One of the similarities is that both animals are domestic and belong to the same kingdom and division. The differences between the cat and the dog can be analyzed in terms of behavior, physical appearance, biological composition, nature and character among others.

Similarities

The dogs and the cats are domesticated mammals with fur or hairs, teeth and four legs. These two pets were originally belonging to the carnivore order. The two animals are good friends of human beings, so they were easily domesticated.  It is easy to train these pets; however it is easier to train the dogs to perform the basic commands. The two pets require love and affection from their owners. Both pets rely on flesh and cereals for food, give birth to multiple offspring at once and suckle their younger ones. 

Differences

Despite the similarities mentioned above, there are many differences between the cat and the dog. First of all, the dogs are more affectionate. They like playing around with people trying to please them,  unlike the cats, which rarely play with people; even if they do, it is just for pleasing themselves. While the dog can wag its tail, or even the whole body, to show its love for the master, a cat can only show its love by walking closer and allow people to scratch behind its ears. This attribute of dogs makes it easy for man to train them to obey and remember the basic commands.

It is very important to note that despite the fact that both animals are domesticated, cats are lone rangers while dogs are pack animals. This means that while the cat enjoys walking alone, the dog likes walking in the company of other dogs. This attribute contributes towards the level of interaction between the two animals. The dog is, therefore, considered an animal of higher social class, and it is friendly to other dogs.

We can use the sound produced by these two animals as the distinction between them. It is beyond reasonable doubt that the two pets produce different sounds. The dogs bark, woof and growl, while the cats usually meow. Any person who has ever domesticated these pets can easily distinguish the cat from the dog by their sounds, without seeing them. It is also important to note that the sound produced by the dog is of higher intensity compared to that of the cat.

The dogs need a lot of space, because most of them are huge and like playing with each other, while the cats are completely satisfied with little space. The dogs are usually more playful compared to cats, which are more quiet and slowly. The other fact is that the dogs of special species can even be used in hunting or as a workforce and be very helpful for people. The cats are considered to be a little bit lazy and selfish animals.

The dogs are very dependent on human beings unlike the cats which are more independent. Cats are good hunters of birds, rats and mice for food but they also depend on human beings who feed them. It is important to note a very interesting fact that female cats would hunt and bring food to the kittens apart from breast feeding, while female dogs only breast feed their puppies. Despite the fact that the dogs can also hunt by chasing the prey, they need people to take care of them.

The dogs are very alert and usually feel happy to be woken by their masters, while the cats do not like being troubled, and especially, woken up. This alert character of the dogs makes them good friends and bodyguards, especially at night since they scare away intruders, while the cats can only run away for their safety.

The dogs can tolerate lack of food for much longer period than the cats, since dogs are better at using their fat reserves. The cats, on the other hand, have to be fed regularly, because their fat reserves are not burnt efficiently and cannot be used as a source of energy; this leads to the process of breaking down of non-fatty tissues for energy, when there is not enough food for the cat. This action puts the liver of the cat at risk of the disease called hepatic lipidosis.

The dogs and the cats are domesticated mammals of the carnivore order. Both animals are good friends of man, despite of the fact that these two animals differ in many ways. The dogs can easily scare intruders away, while the cats are not considered to be good bodyguards. The dogs are more friendly and affectionate compared to cats. Cats are more independent compared to dogs which highly depend on people who take care of them. The cats are usually happy with little space, while the dogs need a lot of space to run around and play. The dogs are pack animals since they enjoy the company of other dogs, while the cats are lone rangers. The dogs and the cats differ greatly from each other in terms of behavior, nature, physical appearance and even character.

Dogs used to live in a pack in the free wild, thus, they require to be with the pack in captivity, therefore they consider you and your family to be their brood. In the wild the dogs hunt in a company of their kind, and love to outnumber their prey. Dogs are usually extremely playful and want to have a job to do. Dogs love to be petted, and can sit on your lap for hours. Dogs are active during the day and sleep at nights. Dogs are extremely “communicative” and use their body language and barking to express their feelings.

Cats, on the other hand, usually hunt on their own, and do not need any company. Certainly they can live together, although they do not require to be with one another or with anyone else. Usually cats do not want to sit with you, and some of them dislike being held. Cats are active at night, and can sleep all day long. Cats can meow, but they are definitely not as noisy as dogs, and much less expressive with their body language.

Depending on the region, there are a vast amount of animals commonly found in households. In the United States, however, the most popular animals to keep are the ever-loved cats and dogs. As their owners become familiar with them, they also find  a vast amount of differences and similarities, down to the smallest details. 

As for similarities, cats and dogs share many qualities. For instance, both animals require basic needs such as food, water, and attention. When adopted into the right family, they will be loved by their owners and the animal will love them back. In physical attributes, both dogs and cats have fur. Even hairless breeds have a small amount of fur on them, be it whiskers, eyelashes, or thin, peach-like fur. In addition, both species have a noise assigned to them: cats meow and dogs bark. 

While both species can be rather similar, they also have striking differences. When it comes to size, certain dog species are known to grow larger than any cat. And, with size comes maintenance. While it usually depends on the breed, dogs require much more maintenance than any regular household’s cat. They must be walked to maintain health, as well as played with in parks or backyards. Not only that, dogs need to be cleaned if they get dirty. In addition, if they relieve themselves, the results may also need cleaning. As for cats, they need significantly less attention, as they can play by themselves. If they become dirty, a cat can clean themselves as their mother taught them. And while they do require a way to relieve themselves, it is a simpler cleansing method in a box than outside. On a side note, if one were to receive a kitten, the mother will usually have already taught them to use the litter box, while a puppy must be taught from square one. 

While similar in multiple categories, cat and dog species are completely different in many aspects, ranging from care to physical attributes. 

Division and Classification

Within the animal kingdom, there is a range of different diets, what is healthy for which animal and why. Currently, there are three classifications when it comes to the diet of animals: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.  

Herbivores are characterized by their main food source of plants. These plants can be from a range of leaves, grass, seeds, nectar, and even wood. Animals such as cows, rabbits, deer, and horses are all herbivores. And, although in different climates, they feed themselves on the surrounding material of their habitat. 

Carnivores, however, have diets based on prey and hunting, rather than gleaning off the surrounding land. Usually, the word carnivore will immediately take one’s brain to eating a large amount of meat, but prey ranges from insects, amphibians, and fish. Such animals who follow such diets include tigers, eagles, and dragonflies. 

As for omnivores, they have a mix of what they eat. Neither carnivore or herbivore, these animals consume both plants and prey. Omnivore birds can hunt and capture fish or insects, while simultaneously snaking on plant material commonly found in their natural habitat. Other examples include foxes, bears, and some species of cricket. 

While there is a wide range of dietary needs for each species, there is equal diversity in the resources they can draw from in order to fulfill their needs.

Similarities between Cats and Dogs

For this particular discussion I am going to compare and contrast in detail the similarities and differences that exist between cats and dogs. First, we shall discuss the similarities. The most obvious similarity is the fact that both animals have hair on their body meaning that they belong the mammal kingdom. Secondly, both these creatures are domesticated meaning that they can be kept as pets. Thirdly, both cats and dogs have territorial instincts. Cats will mark their perceived territories while avoiding crossing boundaries into another cat's area unless necessary dogs on the other hand exhibit very distinctive territorial traits for example they will urinate in certain strategic positions therefore marking their territories.

Common Traits of Cats and Dogs

Despite the fact that these animals may be kept as pets, they still possess they ability to survive in the wild. Cats and dogs are affectionate and bonding. If an owner shows love and affection towards these animals they normally reciprocate the love back. Both cats and dogs drink milk when they are young. They also give birth to multiple offspring at a go.

Differences between Cats and Dogs

There also exist some differences that exist between these two majestic animals. First, is about the species they belong to. Cats belong to the family of felines whereas dogs are canines. Dogs have 42 teeth whereas cats have 30 teeth. Cats can be able to jump or climb, this is advantageous because they are able to have more options when it comes to hunting or escaping danger. Dogs in contrast are earth bound and when threatened they tend to retaliate with aggression because of their limited ability to flee from a predator. Cats are loners meaning that they spend most of their times alone. Dogs in contrast are pack animals meaning that they operate in groups. Wild dogs catch their prey by running it down. Cats on the other hand creep up on their prey before catching it as a surprise. Dogs are therefore long distance runners while cats are sprinters.

Distinctive Characteristics of Cats and Dogs

Another difference that exists is with regards to the sound that they make. Dogs barks, howls or growls whereas a cat purrs or meows. The other difference is about their social status. Dogs tend to have ranks which are normally determined by their tails. When a dog raises its tail up over another dog, it denotes that it is of higher social class. In cats however the raising of tails is a show of happiness. Cats are nocturnal animals meaning that they operate even at night dogs in contrast are day animals. Dogs are considered to be scavenging carnivores. What this means is that although they are primarily carnivorous, dog can also be able to survive on plant material alone. Cats in contrast are mainly carnivores and cannot survive without eating some form of meat.

Additional Differences

Other very obvious differences between cats and dogs are; dogs are usually bigger than cats, dogs are somehow smarter than cats for instance in response to verbal commands. When one calls a dog by its name it usually comes to you unlike cats. Dogs can tolerate the lack of food for a longer duration of time in comparison to cats which easily burn their fat reserves. Cats tend to have retractable claws that are sharp and protected inside their toes dogs' claws in contrast are always extended and become blunt as a result of constant contact with the ground surface.

The ailurophiles (cat lovers) will immediately arch their back and sharpen their claws to tell you exactly why cats reign supreme, while the cynophiles (dog lovers) will rather more endearingly persuade you otherwise. 

The two species are the most common household pets, and each side can argue eternally on which merits top billing. Cats are more independent, dogs are more loyal; cats are cleaner, dogs are more fun. And so it goes on...

For those who cherish a faithful companion who provides a loving gaze, a furry cuddle and – best of all – a delightfully wagging tail, dogs are the answer. A protector, part of the family, and man’s best friend. Here are some of the reasons why dogs are better than cats (cat people, look away now). 

Man’s best friend

Dogs are faithful companions, always. Cats are your friend when they want to be. Dogs have been domesticated for some 30,000 years and there is an element of co-dependency between us and them, hence the expression “man’s best friend”. Cats – who have been domesticated far more recently – would probably be perfectly fine, in body and soul, without us. 

Dogs keep us fit

Dogs require daily exercise. Whether you have a very active breed such as a Springer Spaniel, or a more sedentary one such as a French Bulldog, you’ll need to put in a certain number of steps every day. Some dogs can run for hours, next to a bike or out with with horse riders; others are happy with a gentle stroll in the park, but either way they get you on your feet and out the door. 

There is the odd cat that follows its owner on a walk for a spell, but ever seen a cat on a leash? They decide when, where, and how they will exercise, and you don’t need to play a part. 

The variety of dogs

There are different breeds of cat, of course, but even the size range between the tiny Singapura to the massive Maine Coon, pales into comparison with the Chihuaha to the Great Dane. And cats are pretty much the same overall shape. Yet you might even wonder if a Shih Tzu is the same species as a Rhodesian Ridgeback. Dogs have so much variety within their features, from pointy or bat ears to long droopy ones; fluffy tails to thin ones; long noses to brachycephalic snouts.

Some 200 canine breeds are recognised by the American Kennel Club, whereas The International Cat Association registers only 73.

Need we say more? Dogs give blind people the freedom to go about their daily lives. They can guide their owners in straight lines, stop at curbs, traffic lights, stairs and help them navigate unfamiliar environments. This mobility can lead to greater independence.

A willing playmate

Cats tend to get bored with playtime. They'll tolerate it, even humor you by seeming to enjoy it for a while, but then they turn their tails and strut off. 

Dogs on the other hand adore playing. They’ll play all day, and interactive games are their favorite. Have you ever tried to out-play a springer spaniel at fetch? They will go on and on, and on... They also enjoy tug-of-war, puzzle games, hide and seek, frisbee, anything that’s fun and involves you.

Dogs smell out trouble

Dogs have such a strong sense of smell, and devote much of their brainpower to interpreting what they inhale through their nose. With training, they become adept at sniffing out trouble, whether it’s drugs, explosives, or at disaster sites. As it happens, cats also have millions of sensory receptor sites in their nasal cavity, but you don’t see them solving crimes. It’s not what you have but what you do with it – and cats leave the hard work to the dogs. 

Their bathroom is outside

A litter tray is effectively an open toilet – and however a tidy a cat is about using it, whereas us dog lovers are pleased that our pets to do their business outside. They might need a bit of toilet-training as a puppy, and you still have to pick up after them, but the default location is not in the kitchen.

Dogs boost your dating skills

Several studies have shown that dogs improve your chances of finding a partner. Owning a dog makes people appear more responsible and empathetic, while women are more likely to click on men with dogs on dating sites than those without. 

Women are also more likely to give their number to a guy with a dog than one without, and less likely to date someone who says they are a “cat person”.

Dogs improve your social life

We know that pets of all kinds help people suffering from loneliness, but dogs go beyond just their own comforting presence. They are also a catalyst for human social interactions. Walking around with a dog in tow leads to more spontaneous conversations, especially with strangers, than when walking on your own – and it goes without saying that you don’t take your cat on a stroll the park.

Whether simply chatting about your dogs or the weather, the pooch’s presence makes for an easy ice-breaker for a conversation even both friends and strangers.

Dogs are seizure saviours

Whether it’s a sixth sense or an innate ability to detect particular behaviors, certain dogs can be trained to alert family members when someone is suffering or about to suffer a seizure (even several hours before). They may also lie next to the person while they are having the seizure to provide comfort and protection. 

They will whine, paw or bark to get attention, and the very highly trained dogs can even use a button to call emergency services. A cat may have the intuition, but would probably just walk away from the uncomfortable situation.

Genuine loyalty

A cat “loves” you at certain times but a dog remains indefatigably loyal to his human all day, every day for his entire life. Cats tend to be keen on whoever provides food, whether that’s the neighbour or you, his lifelong owner. 

Dogs, being natural pack animals, have an instinct to protect their people and typically form strong bonds. They are also capable of empathy – if you cry in front of your dog, you’ll know how much they care.

Energy dynamos

Cats, especially young ones, may have a very brief spell of spontaneous zoomies round the house, but nothing can match the enthusiasm of an excitable dog. Their energy levels are invigorating, and there’s nothing for it but to let them work it off with a good walk or game of fetch. Meanwhile, the cat will whizz around for a couple of minutes then go back to sleep. 

Dogs can do sports

Dogs love to show off their athletic ability and let off steam. And this can be channelled into sporting prowess. Dogs love flyball, agility, canic-cross, sled-pulling, and many other canine sports that allow them to show off their skills, including in front of an audience. Cats prefer to curl up by the fire. 

There are countless examples in the news about dogs saving lives. Whether it’s a search-and-rescue effort after an earthquake or bomb disaster, digging skiers out of avalanches or simply raising the alarm in the home that there’s a house fire starting, dogs have turned numerous potential tragedies into triumphs.

Preparing for a family

The movie Marley & Me exemplifies the role a dog can play in preparing for a family. Many couples acquire a dog before having babies, because the skills you learn in looking after a dog – such as patience and consistency – are essential qualities for parents. Practising with a dog gives you transferrable skills.

Cats, being more solitary and independent creatures, do not require the same level of nurturing, consistency, training, time management and patience. 

Dogs are trainable

The expression “it’s like herding cats” to refer to an attempt to control the uncontrollable is founded in fact. Cats do their own thing. They can be trained, with some food motivation, to do some tricks, but only on their terms and they quickly get bored.

Dogs on the other hand seem to enjoy training, the challenge, the reward and the satisfaction of pleasing their handler. They take pride in doing a good job. Furthermore, they thrive on exercise and mental stimulation, and training supports that.

Better for allergies

People can be allergic to cats, dogs or both. There are certain dog breeds that are better for people with allergies, as they shed less and therefore are less likely to cause allergic reactions. However, according the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology , cats are twice as likely to cause allergies than dogs. The allergy is triggered by a protein in the cat’s skin. 

Homecoming greeting

Dogs will greet you whenever you return home – whether it’s from a 30-minute groceries trip or a week’s holiday – like a long-lost lover. A cat will barely raise an eyebrow; did they even notice you left? 

Great affection

Admittedly being jumped on and licked isn’t for everyone, but if it’s full-on affection you crave then it’s a dog you want, and not a cat. The latter may purr for a few minutes when they’re content in your presence – but they may also purr without you, and they certainly wouldn’t stoop to showing that they’re thoroughly delighted to see you.

Better “gifts”

A cat’s way of showing his love is bringing his latest victim of prey, such as a dead mouse or a bird, as a trophy for your approval. This is repulsive for those of us who don’t like carcasses – fair to say, a majority of the population. 

Most dogs are more likely to bring you their toy squirrel than a live one, and hope you’ll play with them.

The tail wag

With a dog, a wagging tail can only mean one thing – happiness. And what a delight it is to see the sheer joy your dog gains from just being with you. A cat can wag its tail, but it’s anyone’s guess what it means. It might be unhappy, annoyed, hurting – or showing affection. Feline behavior is a sophisticated language, but we’ll take the happy waggy doggy any day.

The love hormone

Studies show that when dogs and humans interact with each other positively (stroking, cuddling), both have a surge in oxytocin, “the love hormone”. It’s a similar chemical mechanism in the bond between a mother and her baby, and shows a deep connection of love and deep trust.

Conversely cats, which in the wild don’t need to be part of a pack in the same way as dogs, don’t exhibit this surge in oxytocin – they just aren’t huggy creatures!

Therapy dogs

Granted, cats are also used for therapy, but dogs are the go-to pet for this type of service. Dogs are generally less stressed by leaving their own home, and tend to be more welcoming to strangers, especially those dogs trained for therapy.

There is evidence of dogs’ ability to transform lives and reduce rates of suicide , especially among veterans. Organizations such as  Service Dogs UK  use canines to help humans overcome issues such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, feelings of isolation and depression, and regain their sense of purpose.

Dogs make you laugh more

A study by the Animals and Society Institute has shown that dog owners laugh more than cat owners – although people who owned both, and people who owned neither, also laughed more, at spontaneous situations.

Dogs’ role in war

Dogs have played vital roles in wars through the years, and many have been honoured for their work. Dogs have been used as guards dogs, scouts, trackers and messengers. With their loyalty as well as their innate skills (scenting, stamina, guarding), they have proved worthy allies on the battlefield. Several dogs, such as Chips and Sergeant Stubby, have become famous for their actions. There are no such feline war veterans.

Less likely to get fleas

Both species are prone to flea infestations, but cats are much more likely, according to several studies, including the Big Flea Project, carried out by the University of Bristol . Their study found that one in four cats had fleas, compared to one in seven dogs. 

Cats go AWOL

More than half of UK cat owners say their cat has gone missing at some stage. Dogs like their home comforts and their pack, so are much less likely than a cat to disappear for hours, sometimes days on end. Male cats in particular are partial to go out on the town with no sense of curfew. 

A cat may decide he needs to run away in the face of any upheaval, such as moving house, a new baby, their owners going on holiday, a new cat or pet arriving, packing and so on. A dog may be a little unsettled, but very rarely would it cause them to flee.

Dogs deal better with disruption

A dog accepts his place in the pack, and therefore is better able to cope with big life changes. A dog tends to bond with a human, so as long as that human is around, he settles easily. A cat, being more independent, won’t look to the human for help. A dog also thrives on routine, which is very settling, whereas a cat is more capricious and therefore harder to soothe if they are restless.

Dogs are friendlier

As a pack animal, dogs tend to demonstrate more positive social behaviors than cats do. They are more likely to make eye contact with strangers, follow human cues and respond to human emotions. Cats are independent and can be aloof. They are less responsive to emotional signals, and much less likely to approach strangers. 

What does a cat actually do?

Cats arguably serve little practical purpose, in comparison with dogs, who love to have a job. There are plenty of working dogs, whether it’s in the hunting field, retrieving game, or as service dogs in various capacities (guide dogs, therapy dogs, sniffer dogs), but even in the home, they can’t help being useful. Perhaps your pet dog brings you the newspaper or mail, he barks when there are visitors – or intruders – he protects the family. 

A cat catches mice, and that’s about it – and if you get a feisty terrier, he’ll do that for you too.

Cats regularly vomit hairballs, retching until they have delivered the unpleasant mess on to the carpet. Cats naturally lick themselves clean, it’s their way of grooming themselves, and this involves catching a lot of fur on their barbed tongue, swallowing it and then now again vomiting it up. Dogs don’t do this.

Animal lovers should throw local pet shelters a bone

The Department of Justice recently filed legal action against Apple, arguing the iPhone maker holds a monopoly over the communications market. The landmark antitrust case is only the latest action taken by the federal government to foster healthy competition within the U.S. economy to protect consumers. When too few companies dominate an industry, most people lose.

Big Tech isn’t the only area that could benefit from more competition. The animal advocacy space is largely controlled by two national organizations that together make absorb more than half a billion dollars in donations every year. With bloated bank accounts and no real competitors to keep operations honest, the groups have gone off the rails — leaving homeless cats and dogs behind in the process.

As the former chief executive of one of the groups, I would know.

The Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) are by far the largest groups within the animal welfare space, leverage that’s deployed to factory-fundraise via major — and expensive — advertising campaigns. Over the past decade, the philanthropy juggernauts have collected more than $3.7 billion in contributions.

With all this cash, the national groups are able to crowd out independently operated neighborhood humane societies, rescues, and other local aid organizations that are in crisis mode. It’s akin to a big box store running a mom-and-pop retail shop out of business.

The Humane Society and ASPCA have combined annual fundraising budgets amounting to more than $100 million a year, enabling these serial marketers to reach a vast audience with gut-wrenching commercials featuring suffering cats and dogs. You’ve likely seen the Sarah McLachlan television ad that pulled on the heartstrings of America during the 2000s. (“For just $18 a month, you can help rescue animals from their abusers.”)

Not only are local and regional animal aid groups outgunned, but the ads are running in their own backyards.

That means donations that would ordinarily be earmarked for local shelters — which are dealing with the bulk of homeless dogs and cats — are being commandeered by the New York- and Washington-based heavyweights. The situation is also exacerbated by name confusion, with 8 in 10 Americans wrongly believing the national groups are umbrella organizations for local pet shelter networks and therefore donate to the former.

The Humane Society does not run a single pet shelter, the ASPCA is unaffiliated with local SPCAs nationwide, and grant programs intended to support community pet shelters have shriveled to nearly nothing. According to the groups’ own tax returns, the organizations give just 1 and 2% of their respective budgets as financial gifts to state-based shelters and rescues. 

Don’t take my word for it.

A recent survey from the Center for the Environment and Welfare of nearly 2,000 local pet shelters and rescues finds that 74% of respondents consider their funding levels “inadequate” and nearly two-thirds say donor confusion between their organization and the Humane Society or ASPCA reduces contributions.

Dating back to Standard Oil and, later, the Bell System, the U.S. government has helped to foster dynamic competition within industries to help protect consumers. While Uncle Sam isn’t waiting in the wings to take on the animal welfare duopoly, cat and dog lovers can still do their part by donating locally. Community organizations need to be thrown a bone.
