Is it a simple bungalow in the countryside surrounded by flowers? Or is it a glass house by the lake? First, describe your dream house’s size, design, and features. Then, choose the best location for it. Finally, explain how this dream house perfectly fits your lifestyle preference or what inspired your dream house.

Find out about the most popular dream house styles and describe them. For example, contemporary houses are often defined by minimalist designs. Victorian-styled houses, meanwhile, boast aesthetic details. If you have also noticed common denominators among today’s dream houses, such as a natural color finish to the walls and deep kitchen hues, add them.

My Dream House- An Essay

I always imagine how my future house will be. A home is a place surrounded by the people one loves. A house is not made beautiful by its furniture or decor, but by the people that live inside it. My dream house should be a house that I can share with my family when I grow old. I always dream of a wooden house in the hilly areas. My dream house should be the one facing a small river. Through the windows, I could see the sun setting and disappearing into the mountains. My dream house would have a small garden where I will grow my own vegetables and fruits.

The house that I fancy would be considerably big with four rooms and a spacious common area. My dream house should be comfortable for my parents, grandparents and siblings. The house should be equipped with all the modern amenities. It should have a big TV with a home theatre system and a Playstation attached to it. The walls of the house will have light colours that will make it appear bright. There will be sufficient light bulbs and lamps in every room. I also dream of a chandelier in the guest room and a big sofa where everyone will sit and enjoy watching TV together. My grandparents love reading. I wish that my dream house will have a reading space with lots of books.

I have a 3-year old pet dog called Tiger. I also want to have a small yet cosy space in my house for Tiger where he can sleep and relax when he grows old. The house will have beautiful interiors and will have all the facilities like a modern kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase leading to the terrace, ACs, etc. My dream home should be the one where we all can live happily and comfortably.

Doing topic research before writing an essay is very important. To write a dream house essay in English, you must first visualize the entire house in your mind. Then it would help if you decided what details and how many details you want to include in your dream house essay. These will include the words or phrases that you want to include.

Planning before writing not only saves time but helps you in organizing your ideas. You will have to spend some time in developing a basic outline of your essay. It will help you in improving the flow of your writing and will help the reader in visualizing your dream house.

As discussed before, having a writing plan proves to help bring your thoughts on a piece of paper. An outline of my dream house essay will be like a blueprint that will serve as a guide when you sit down to write the actual essay.

An example of the essay outline that describes your house can be:

  • Introduction
  • Body Paragraph 1: Details about the exterior of the house
  • Body Paragraph 2: Details about the interior of the house

You should feel free to include as many details or points as you wish or deem appropriate. With that said, make sure the flow is logical and the essay segues smoothly from the introduction to the body and then to the concluding part.

Your dream house essay should engage the readers. It can be only achieved when the body paragraphs are cohesive, linked, and are in a flow. It is unnecessary to make two separate paragraphs to communicate similar ideas; hence, they should be grouped together. Topic sentences should be used along with content to support it. All the paragraphs should have a similar length. The use of transition words (such as ‘furthermore’, ‘however’, and ‘besides’) will improve the connection and flow between paragraphs. Do not use intricate sentence structure that is difficult to read and understand. Simple sentences are easier to understand and will help in visualizing the house. The dream house essay example written at the end will provide you with a better idea of how paragraphs are written.

Your essay should include all of the details regarding the house. It would be best if you start by putting a “my dream house paragraph” at the start, which will give the reader a basic idea or introduction. It can be followed by a paragraph of what living in a dream house would be like for you. Then you can continue by explaining the exterior, interior, and particular areas or features of the house which make the house a “dream house” for you. You can mention the tiniest details as it helps the reader in visualizing better. You can also imagine yourself living in that house and then jot down different activities that you might be carrying out, such as hosting parties and having movie nights.

The conclusion of the essay will give a summary of all the points you have mentioned in your essay “the house of my dream”. It will wrap up your essay in a neat manner. When concluding your essay, please do not restate the idea or the statement that you want to have a dream house as it will be redundant. The conclusion is not supposed to bring any new ideas as they should only be explained in the body paragraphs.

Once you are done writing the essay, its time to sit back and revise it carefully. The revision process lets you look at the essay from a fresh perspective. You can be critical while reading it. It is the rethinking phase in which you reconsider the details, add something in case anything was missed, and reorganize the paragraphs. If you have missed details about the exciting floor tiling, while describing your dream house, now is the time to add those.

The golden rule of writing is not relying on the first draft of an essay about a dream house or of any essay. If you are not considering this, then you are risking more than just having confused readers. What if you have made spelling mistakes or errors in the sentence structure. It might derail the reader and can hinder the visualization process of your dream house. Proofreading can help you maintain quality and can help you in recognizing areas that could have been written and explained better.

To help with the visualization process, pictures that resemble your dream house can be added. It will also ensure the attentiveness of the reader as images are better at grabbing attention. Also, the human brain can process images much faster than words. Check out the example in the dream house college assignment written below.

essay about my dream house

Since childhood, I have been dreaming of the perfect house that will be a place of happiness, inspiration, and peace. The idea of having a house in a noisy city is something I have always dreaded. My dream house will be in the suburbs, outside the city. I would be very excited is there is a lake nearby as I adore nature. Though the house will be far from the city, that does not mean that I will live in isolation. Everything will be a walking distance, whether it is a supermarket or a car wash.

The house of my dreams will have a simple but modern design that would be appealing to the eyes. I would like to have a huge lawn where I can grow my vegetables and fruits. The parking would be spacious enough for several cars. I will place modern furniture on the front porch, where we can relax and enjoy the view. The backyard will have enough space to hold a party and entertain at least fifty people. I have a huge family, and we are always hosting parties. I also want a pool in the backyard so that I can host pool parties.

The house will have plenty of large glass windows that will make the house bright and spacious. I will plan each detail of the interior of my house. I want it to be very modern and minimalistic. Bulky furniture, dark wallpapers, and bohemian décor is something that I do not want in my house.

Unnecessary furniture clutters the house and makes me claustrophobic. The hall and large living room should have enough space so that people can move around quickly. I want to have comfortable sofas and soft furry carpet on the floor. The kitchen should be large and neat, as I am fond of cooking and baking. It will be equipped with all the latest appliances to make the whole baking process more comfortable. I would love to cook for my family on weekends. We can all sit on the large wooden dining table and enjoy the scrumptious meal.

The bedrooms will have attached bathrooms. I want a rain shower and a bathtub in every bathroom in my house. The bedrooms will have king-size, cozy beds with linen sheets. Just like the house, I want the color of the beddings to be light. Unlike most of the houses, I would like to have a small home theatre in my bedroom. I am not a bookworm so I might turn the room that was meant to be a library in a proper movie theatre so that I can host movie nights.

My dream house will be warm and welcoming. I want it to be my happy place, away from all the hustle and bustle. It will fulfill my desire of living near nature. It would be a perfect place for me to relax after a tough day at work. I wish that one day I can build this house and live in it.

My Dream House Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

Everyone should dream about their dream house and should achieve it. Food, clothing, and a place to live are considered to be every person's three basic needs. Typically, everyone needs help to obtain these three things before achieving other goals. When we have a place to reside, it makes us feel delighted.

100 Words Essay on My Dream House

200 words essay on my dream house, 500 words essay on my dream house.

My Dream House Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

I frequently visualise my future house. In a house, one is surrounded by the people one cherishes. The people that reside there make a house lovely, not the furnishings or decorations. When I become older, my dream house should be one I can live in with my family. I frequently envision a wooden home in a steep place. My dream house would be situated near a small, rushing river. I could see the sun setting and vanishing behind the mountains through the windows. My dream house would include a small garden to grow fruits and veggies. I will decorate my dream house with plants, paintings, and beautiful art.

My dream house will be situated on the seaside. I can see the sun setting and vanishing behind the sea through the windows. My dream home would include a small garden to grow fruits and veggies . My dream house would have four rooms, a sizable common area, and be rather large. My dream house should be cosy for my siblings, parents, and grandparents. In my dream house, all of the contemporary conveniences should be up there. It should have a large TV, a home theatre system, and a playstation.

The house will have light-coloured walls that will give the impression that it is bright. Every room will have enough lamps and light bulbs. In my dreams, the guest room will have a chandelier and a large sofa where everyone can enjoy watching TV together. My grandparents enjoy books. I hope the reading room in my ideal home has an extensive collection of books.

I also want to provide my dog with a quiet, cosy area in my home where he may rest and unwind. The house will have a lovely interior design and all the amenities, including an updated kitchen, three bathrooms, a stairway leading to a terrace, air conditioning units, etc. The place where we can all live happily and comfortably is my dream house.

My dream house would be a large home surrounded by a garden with trees and flowers. It will be a place where I may find true peace and contentment outside the city, on the outskirts of town. Therefore, the elements of my ideal home should reflect who I am in terms of both location and interior and exterior design.

The sounds of nature have always captivated me. In this regard, I picture my home built in the countryside near a river. It would be situated such that I could access clean air and water. Additionally, I want to stay close to a major city's core, so I can quickly go for office work when necessary.

Location | In actuality, the central aspect of the location of my dream house would be near serenity and harmony along with nature. My house would have a long driveway with a concrete circle around it. Around my house, I would have numerous flower beds filled with colourful flowers. I likewise dream of having a patio that encircled my 4,500 square foot house on both the front and the back. My house would have gorgeous bright blue, orange, yellow, and green outside walls with some Mexican fabrics framing all of the windows and doors.

Backyard | I would adore having a family gym, ball court, small cricket ground, Jacuzzi, and in-ground pool in the backyard. A small bar in my swimming pool would be ideal, especially during the summer. Eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms, two dining rooms, a kitchen, a library, a playroom, and an office would make up the interior of my house. My bedrooms would be furnished with rustic pieces, vivid bedding, and coordinating drapes and rugs. There would also be a massive, roomy walk-in closet in each bedroom. There should be indoor sports games in the backyard like table tennis, carrom, and ludo.

Bathrooms | In all ten bathrooms, Mexican wall art would be installed, and Mexican tiled countertops would surround my tub, sink, and shower. Additionally, I would want a sizable closet and plenty of cabinet space in each bathroom for storage. My living room would be practically the largest room in my house to accommodate a large family. A large flat-screen TV mounted on the wall, a fireplace, and theatre-style surround sound would all be necessities. Tables and room for about 20 people would need to be included in the two dining areas.

Kitchen | The largest room in my ideal home would be the kitchen. All of my kitchen appliances should be metal and coordinated. My kitchen would have a large island in the middle, where one of my stoves would be situated, and I would make food for my family and friends.

House is the best place, which gives us the feeling of love, affection, and security. It is the place where we feel most relaxed and free. Having your own house means you can sleep without any hesitation. I dream of having my own house someday which will be big enough for my whole family. I would also love to entertain my friends and relatives during holidays and festivities in my house.

If teachers ask you to write a nice essay on my dream house, you should understand that this type of work is descriptive . Many students don’t consider this assignment easy. It takes a long time and effort. You should have a comfortable space to sit with no friends or other distractions around to be focused on this academic task in full. Create an effective plan and use helpful tips. It is almost like a critical essay . Think about the houses you like, choose the one you dream to live in, and try to convey your relevant ideas on a few pages.

Before you start drafting an essay on this topic, learn the specifics of descriptive writing and effective tactics to succeed. First, determine the main purpose of writing it. Provide each person reading your essay with a clear and vivid image of your dream house in detail, such as:

  • Its location;
  • When it was built;
  • The number of rooms, including a living room, bedroom or bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom)
  • Its color scheme (green, brown, white, or other colors);
  • Its size (small or big);
  • Whether it has a beautiful garden with different plants and flowers);
  • Where to leave cars;
  • The material of the walls;
  • The overall feel and look.

Make your dream house appear in front of other people. Use effective ways to make them imagine what you’re writing about.

Open your assignment and read all instructions carefully before you choose a topic for your future paper. Pick a specific matter that you’ll cover in it. Your descriptive essay should have a focus. This means that you need to pick narrow topics, such as the design of your dream house, the place you want it to be, how it looks downstairs, etc. Choose the aspect that is easy to describe.

Writing my dream house essay can be fun because you can consider different elements, like the bed, door, and floor types, chairs, and so on. With so many interesting ideas, try to think outside the box or choose an original angle to share exceptional descriptions. A good topic makes the entire process easier. Look at https://www.slideshare.net/soniaimfernandes/my-dream-house-7986519 to get a better idea of basic details to mention in your paper.

Take into account the aspects that will make your essay engaging for the audience. Your interests can give brilliant ideas. Use the following suggestions for your inspiration:

  • Your perfect house on wheels;
  • Living in the country;
  • Multi-car garage;
  • Expensive and affordable features;
  • Outdoor or indoor swimming pool;
  • Giving your family the home they’ve always imagined;
  • If your dream home isn’t a house;

Use a good plan to develop concepts for every part. It helps you structure and organize all the details as you take notes of interesting things that you’ll discuss in your paper. Your outline ensures that you write it according to guidelines.

There are certain steps that you should take to end up with high marks for a dream house essay:

  • Make a table with five columns (write a few sentences in each one to reflect all senses).
  • Fill it up with the best words that describe the dream house perfectly (avoid complex phrases or boring words).
  • Make an effective structure . It will give a proper sense to your topic (order your essay from general to specific to structure relevant information correctly).
  • Write a coherent and clear introduction or opening paragraph that serves as the establishment of major points and key ideas.
  • Write strong topic sentences. Include each one in a separate paragraph to let readers know what they will read about in every part of your paper.
  • Write body paragraphs. Each one should match a specific topic sentence. The main purpose of writing them is to prove that your arguments or ideas have a proper sense and you’re right about a particular issue.
  • Share some interesting details. Look at the table filled up with details about all senses to provoke important associations in the audience to let them better understand your idea.
  • Write a logical and coherent conclusion. It should summarize everything discussed on other sections, provoke readers to further discussions, restate your thesis, or include a call to action. Make it as strong as possible.

After taking all the above-mentioned steps , it’s necessary to proofread and edit your final draft to make sure that it’s free from grammar errors, typos, and other mistakes. Take some break before doing that. You’ll return with a fresh look. It’s also advisable to ask other people to proofread your paper because they can easily find the mistakes that you missed.

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on ‘My Dream House’ for Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on ‘my dream house’ in english, short essay on ‘my dream house’, long paragraph on ‘my dream house’ for kids, what your child will learn from this essay.

A house is the most important place in one’s life. It is the place where one can rest, have fun, and feel safe, too. Everyone has an idea of their dream house, including children. In fact, we think children have really cool ideas about their dream home! If you have a child, encourage them to write an essay about it, and you’ll be amazed at how creatively they express themselves. Writing on the topic will keep your child engaged and also expand their imagination. Hand them a pen and paper, and if possible, write with them and share each other’s ideas about your dream house. For the kids who need a kickstart, here are some tips they can remember before they pen down an impressive essay on ‘My Dream House’.

There are some important points your child needs to remember while writing an essay on their dream house. Here’s a step-by-step guide you can use to help your child describe their dream house:

  • In the first step, let your child’s imagination take over and ideate on what they want to write on the topic.
  • Let them then pen down the ideas on paper. This will form an outline, and it will help them cover all the points while writing the paragraph.
  • In the next step, guide your child to form easy-to-read short and simple sentences from the outline.
  • Motivate your child to elaborate on each idea instead of describing one particular idea.
  • Help your child to write with the flow. This will help them enjoy writing the essay.
  • Your child can mention how they want their dream house to be, the importance of a home, how the family bonds in the house, etc.

One’s dream house plays an important role in their life. These lines will help your child to write a simple 10-line essay on ‘My Dream House’ for class 1 and class 2.

  • My dream house is big.
  • There will be open space in the front and at the back.
  • It will have a big lawn and a backyard.
  • There will be a garden full of flowers in the front.
  • Organic vegetables will grow in the backyard.
  • The house will have big rooms.
  • The windows will be very big.
  • There will be lots of sunshine and air.
  • There will be a small pool.
  • The whole family will enjoy living in the house.

This short paragraph on the topic would help your little one elaborate on their ideas and write the essay with a flow:

My dream house will be a white coloured house with peach borders. It will have a lot of open space all around it. There will be plenty of plants in and around the house. The lawn in front of the house will have bright blooming flowers, like roses, sunflowers, jasmines, dahlias, lilies, and lavender. The house will also have a fence and tall trees all along the fence. I wish to have neem trees, mango trees, dates, Gulmohar trees, cotton trees, masquerade trees, and coconut trees. My dream house will be surrounded by greenery. I will live in the house with my parents, grandparents, brother, and my cutest little furry friend, Lucky.

And, how can we forget a long paragraph? Here’s an example your child can use when writing their own essay:

My dream house is a beautiful white house with peach borders. There’s a lot of open space around the house. It will have a lawn and garden in the front. There will be a big backyard, too. The garden will be filled with bright, fragrant flowers, especially clusters of pink, white, yellow, peach, and red roses. There will be sunflowers, lilies, marigolds, dahlias, jasmines, and many other flowers. I will also grow healthy and nutritious organic vegetables and fruits in the backyard. We can have those fruits and veggies every day.

There will also be a tiny pool behind the house. We will have lots of fun in the pool throughout the summer. Tall trees will stand along the whole length of the fence. There will be mango trees, neem trees, Gulmohar, dates, cotton trees, coconut trees, and masquerade trees. It will be nice to see the sun setting behind the trees. In the mornings, I will wake up to the chirping of the birds nesting in those trees. The house will also have big balconies with plenty of plants in brightly painted ceramic pots.

I will live in the house with my parents, grandparents, brother, and my sweetest little furry friend, Lucky. We will spend a lot of time bonding with each other in this house. The house will have big rooms with lots of sunshine and air. The walls will have beautiful paintings. Some of my drawings will also be framed and put on the walls. I will decorate the house with strings of lights that will sparkle and shine. There will be colourful curtains that will sway with the cool breeze. There will be small cosy mattresses in each room for Lucky. She can enjoy being in any room she wants.

The house will also have a bathtub where I will play with squeeze toys, splashing water. There will be a pinboard next to my study table where I will put up positive thoughts. We will also have a small library that will stock many books. On the lawn, we will play throw and fetch balls. Lucky enjoys it when she fetches the ball for us. We will also play badminton. I love to play these two games. There will be a tea table under an umbrella with a few chairs on the lawn. We will have a nice time sipping juice while the elders take tea or coffee. At night, we will lie down and count stars in the sky. The whole family will have the best time in this house!

For your child, writing this essay will help them expand their imagination and enhance their vocabulary and creative skills. Your little one will also enjoy the creative freedom they get while penning down their thoughts, no matter how offbeat they are.

We hope the above blog will help your child write a beautiful essay on the topic. A house symbolises togetherness, love, bonding, and positivity. When your child expresses their thoughts and feelings about their dream house, they will not only improve their written communication skills but also train their subconscious mind to bring their dream house to life someday!

Moreover, my dream house also includes a study room where I can pursue my interests and hobbies. It also has a small garden where I and my father will grow fruits and vegetables.

My dream house is a heaven where I can escape from the chaos of the outside world and find peace. This dream house is not just a structural building but a reflection of my dreams and aspirations. Imagining my dream house brings a smile to my face every time.

Long Essay on My Dream House (500 Words)

A house is the place where we do live with our family, that’s why it’s the most important things in our lives. It is much more than a shelter. A lot of love and care is required for making a house. It is a place that holds our thoughts, feelings, and memories. A house is where we all can gather and spend time together. So, having a dream house that fits our wants and tastes is very important. My dream house is a place where we can all live happily and in comfort.

Location of my dream house

My dream house will be in a quiet, green area far from the noise of the city. It should be near a sea and has amazing views of the surrounding area. Through the windows, I can see the sun setting and going down behind the sea. The peace and beauty of the place make it the perfect place to get away from the busyness of everyday life.

Interior and Exterior Design

The house will have a beautiful interior design with all the amenities that I could want, like an updated kitchen, three bathrooms, a staircase going to a terrace, etc. My dream house would have a modern look. It will have big windows that will allow lots of natural light into the house, making it feel bright and airy. The outside of the house would have a large lush green garden, which would make a beautiful scene with fresh atmosphere.

Bedrooms: The Perfect Place for Relaxation

My dream house would be big and have four rooms and a big living room. The walls of each room will have light colors, which will make it look bright. Each bedroom would have big windows and a balcony where we can sit and watch the peaceful view every morning and evening. The decor of the rooms would be simple but beautiful with minimal stuufs.

Kitchen: A Delicious Paradise

In my dream house, the kitchen will have a large space for cooking. Large windows would let in natural light and give a view of the beautiful area from the kitchen. The kitchen should have everything a modern person needs. It should also have a large dining table where we all can sit together and have meal.

Living Room: The Heart of the House

The living room is the heart of my dream house. It’s a place to relax, have fun, and spend time with family and friends. It would have big, comfortable sofas. The entertainment area would be complete with a big, flat-screen TV and a sound system. This would make it possible to watch movies and play games with family and friends.

Every part of my dream house has been carefully thought out to fit my style and make a nice place to live. I hope to have my own house that is big enough for my whole family one day. By paying attention to our dreams, we can use our potential to reach our goals and fulfill our desires.

IELTS comprises several different sections, one of which is the speaking test. Every individual appearing for IELTS must undertake the activities under this section and answer the questions asked adequately.

In the present scenario, the topic we would like to discuss is ' Describe Your Deam House ’.  So, your answer must touch down on the following aspects:

  • Where is your dream house located?
  • What would it look like?
  • When would you like to live in your dream house?
  • Why is this house perfect for you?

Table of Contents

Describe your dream house in detail: question 1, download e-books for ielts preparation, what will your dream house look like: question 2, important ielts exam resources.

The idea of having a dream house someday fills me with excitement. It will be one place that will be solely mine– a place I can rest, unwind and call my own.

When I think of where this dream house would be situated, I can only envision the cold and peaceful mountains. I have been to hills and mountains during many treks. It's one place that offers me the most joy. The happiness of walking on the side of the curvy, narrow roads and stopping at a small food stall to have a hot cup of tea and noodles makes me feel alive. Life feels simpler there.

My dream house would ideally be small. I don't have the desire to live in a gigantic mansion with all the worldly and materialistic amenities. Although it would be small, it would have hundreds of plants– both inside and outside. My kitchen will be my happy place, where I will always keep everything stocked. The balcony will have a little hammock where I could read a book and get lost in the fictional world.

I would love to have this dream house as soon as possible, maybe in the next year or two. It's only about attaining financial stability and a job I love, and then I can move to my house in the mountains!

The day I move would perhaps be the happiest day of my life. This house will be perfect for me because I have thought of every aspect of it, in incredible detail, over and over. It'll be a house made of love and tranquillity, with a house cat running around to give me company!

In conclusion, my dream house, a harmonious blend of comfort, aesthetic appeal, and functionality, represents more than just a physical structure; it's a sanctuary that echoes my personality, values, and aspirations. Envisioned as a place of tranquility, inspiration, and warmth, it serves as a haven where memories are made and cherished. From its eco-friendly design to the cozy, inviting spaces, each element of this house contributes to an atmosphere of peace and happiness. In describing my dream house for this IELTS Cue Card, I not only share a personal vision but also articulate a future aspiration, showcasing my ability to communicate complex ideas and emotions effectively in English. This dream house symbolizes the culmination of my goals and efforts, a place where I can thrive, grow, and find solace.

Describe Your Dream House: IELTS Cue Card

Ever since I was young, I always thought that growing up would be so exciting. For one, it would involve having a house of my own, my dream house. A place that is just mine, where I can host the people I love and always be authentically myself.

My dream house will be a beach house. So, every morning, I would first pull the curtains away from the life-size windows and watch the waves hitting the shore. I imagine the noise of crashing waves to be rhythmic and peaceful. Moreover, the idea of sitting on the porch while the salty winds rush through the tangles of my hair sounds beautiful to me.

The house would ideally be big enough for me, my parents and my friends if they ever want to stay. I want to be the person whose house is always open for loved ones to stay over. It would have an all-blue theme to match the seaside atmosphere. I also envision a lot of artwork hanging on the walls of my house.

I think no other place would come close to being perfect for me than this one. I am a water baby, and I love the feel of sand under my feet. Moreover, I will personalize this space to match my taste and comfort. I will also add a library room.

If it were up to me, I would want to buy my dream house today. That said, it's not financially possible, so I will strive to work hard and gain stability in my life to have it one day.

Paragraph on Dream House

Students are often asked to write a paragraph on Dream House in their schools. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 200-word, and 250-word paragraphs on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

Paragraph on Dream House in 100 Words

My dream house is big and colorful, with lots of rooms for playing. It has a huge garden where I can run and play hide-and-seek. Inside, there are soft carpets that feel like grass under my feet. The walls have pictures of animals and fairy tale castles. My bedroom has a bed shaped like a race car, and I can see the stars through a window on the roof. The kitchen always smells like chocolate cookies, and there’s a special cupboard just for my toys. It’s a happy place where my family and I laugh, have fun, and make memories together.

Paragraph on Dream House in 200 Words

My dream house is a place that feels like a big hug when I walk in. It’s not too big, just cozy enough for my family and me. It has bright rooms with lots of windows so the sun can smile at us every day. I imagine it painted in soft colors, like the blue of the sky and the green of the grass. There’s a small garden outside where I can grow flowers and sweet fruits, and there’s enough space for a swing and a little treehouse. Inside, there’s a room with shelves full of books and a soft rug where I can sit and read. My bedroom has a bed that feels like sleeping on a cloud and walls decorated with pictures of stars and my favorite cartoons. The kitchen smells like cookies and has a big table where we all eat and talk about our day. And the best part? There’s a special room with toys and games where my friends and I can play and laugh for hours. My dream house may not be a castle, but it’s filled with love, joy, and the magic of being together with the people I love. (Word count: 200)

Paragraph on Dream House in 250 Words

A dream house is a place where you feel happiest, safest, and most comfortable. Imagine a cozy home that reflects all your favorite things. It could be a tall building in a busy city or a quiet cottage in the countryside. The outside might be painted in bright colors with a beautiful garden filled with flowers and trees where you can play or relax. Inside, each room would be just the right size for you and filled with soft furniture that invites you to sit down and read or play games. Your bedroom would be your special space, with a comfy bed and a window that lets in the morning sun. The kitchen would always smell like delicious food, and the living room would have a big TV for watching movies and enough space for your friends and family to gather. Maybe there’s even a room just for playing games or making art. This house would be a place where you always feel welcome and where every corner holds a favorite memory or promises a new adventure. It’s not just about having a big or fancy place to live. It’s about having a home that feels like it’s a part of you and where you can be yourself. Your dream house is a place of joy, love, and the magic of everyday life, where every day feels like the best day ever.

The Beginner's Guide to Writing an Essay | Steps & Examples

An academic essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an idea or argument using evidence, analysis, and interpretation.

There are many types of essays you might write as a student. The content and length of an essay depends on your level, subject of study, and course requirements. However, most essays at university level are argumentative — they aim to persuade the reader of a particular position or perspective on a topic.

The essay writing process consists of three main stages:

  • Preparation: Decide on your topic, do your research, and create an essay outline.
  • Writing : Set out your argument in the introduction, develop it with evidence in the main body, and wrap it up with a conclusion.
  • Revision:  Check your essay on the content, organization, grammar, spelling, and formatting of your essay.

The writing process of preparation, writing, and revisions applies to every essay or paper, but the time and effort spent on each stage depends on the type of essay .

For example, if you’ve been assigned a five-paragraph expository essay for a high school class, you’ll probably spend the most time on the writing stage; for a college-level argumentative essay , on the other hand, you’ll need to spend more time researching your topic and developing an original argument before you start writing.

how do you write a dream house essay

Before you start writing, you should make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to say and how you’re going to say it. There are a few key steps you can follow to make sure you’re prepared:

  • Understand your assignment: What is the goal of this essay? What is the length and deadline of the assignment? Is there anything you need to clarify with your teacher or professor?
  • Define a topic: If you’re allowed to choose your own topic , try to pick something that you already know a bit about and that will hold your interest.
  • Do your research: Read  primary and secondary sources and take notes to help you work out your position and angle on the topic. You’ll use these as evidence for your points.
  • Come up with a thesis:  The thesis is the central point or argument that you want to make. A clear thesis is essential for a focused essay—you should keep referring back to it as you write.
  • Create an outline: Map out the rough structure of your essay in an outline . This makes it easier to start writing and keeps you on track as you go.

Once you’ve got a clear idea of what you want to discuss, in what order, and what evidence you’ll use, you’re ready to start writing.

The introduction sets the tone for your essay. It should grab the reader’s interest and inform them of what to expect. The introduction generally comprises 10–20% of the text.

1. Hook your reader

The first sentence of the introduction should pique your reader’s interest and curiosity. This sentence is sometimes called the hook. It might be an intriguing question, a surprising fact, or a bold statement emphasizing the relevance of the topic.

Let’s say we’re writing an essay about the development of Braille (the raised-dot reading and writing system used by visually impaired people). Our hook can make a strong statement about the topic:

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

2. Provide background on your topic

Next, it’s important to give context that will help your reader understand your argument. This might involve providing background information, giving an overview of important academic work or debates on the topic, and explaining difficult terms. Don’t provide too much detail in the introduction—you can elaborate in the body of your essay.

3. Present the thesis statement

Next, you should formulate your thesis statement— the central argument you’re going to make. The thesis statement provides focus and signals your position on the topic. It is usually one or two sentences long. The thesis statement for our essay on Braille could look like this:

As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness.

4. Map the structure

In longer essays, you can end the introduction by briefly describing what will be covered in each part of the essay. This guides the reader through your structure and gives a preview of how your argument will develop.

The invention of Braille marked a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by blind and visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Write your essay introduction

The body of your essay is where you make arguments supporting your thesis, provide evidence, and develop your ideas. Its purpose is to present, interpret, and analyze the information and sources you have gathered to support your argument.

Length of the body text

The length of the body depends on the type of essay. On average, the body comprises 60–80% of your essay. For a high school essay, this could be just three paragraphs, but for a graduate school essay of 6,000 words, the body could take up 8–10 pages.

Paragraph structure

To give your essay a clear structure , it is important to organize it into paragraphs . Each paragraph should be centered around one main point or idea.

That idea is introduced in a  topic sentence . The topic sentence should generally lead on from the previous paragraph and introduce the point to be made in this paragraph. Transition words can be used to create clear connections between sentences.

After the topic sentence, present evidence such as data, examples, or quotes from relevant sources. Be sure to interpret and explain the evidence, and show how it helps develop your overall argument.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

See the full essay example

The conclusion is the final paragraph of an essay. It should generally take up no more than 10–15% of the text . A strong essay conclusion :

  • Returns to your thesis
  • Ties together your main points
  • Shows why your argument matters

A great conclusion should finish with a memorable or impactful sentence that leaves the reader with a strong final impression.

What not to include in a conclusion

To make your essay’s conclusion as strong as possible, there are a few things you should avoid. The most common mistakes are:

  • Including new arguments or evidence
  • Undermining your arguments (e.g. “This is just one approach of many”)
  • Using concluding phrases like “To sum up…” or “In conclusion…”

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

An essay is a focused piece of writing that explains, argues, describes, or narrates.

In high school, you may have to write many different types of essays to develop your writing skills.

Academic essays at college level are usually argumentative : you develop a clear thesis about your topic and make a case for your position using evidence, analysis and interpretation.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main point of a paragraph . Everything else in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

A Beginner’s Guide on How to Write an Editorial

Writing an editorial essay lets you share your viewpoint on or advocate for a particular cause with your audience. A great editorial article creates awareness on a matter and influences people’s positions on it. But how do you compose such an article?

This post shares valuable insights on how to write an editorial that impresses editors and influences readers. Keep reading to enhance your effectiveness and master how to write an editorial essay .

What Is an Editorial Paper?

Let’s start by answering the big question, “ What is an editorial paper ?” As the name suggests, an editorial article or paper expresses an editor’s stand on a matter and explains the issue at hand. However, it doesn’t mean that the editor exclusively expresses their thoughts. That’s why the writer must research the topic and include other people’s ideas on the subject.

A great editorial paper focuses on a given topic. The author must focus on why their target readers care about the topic and why some people might hold contrary views. That’s why understanding the two sides of a matter makes an editorial more interesting and acceptable to many audiences. You will also need to present readers with valid evidence that supports your opinions.

When your editorial addresses a problem, you must also present clear solutions. Tell your readers what should be done to address the situation. If necessary, speak to the relevant authorities that need to take appropriate measures to address particular situations. For instance, you can address the government or institutions that can midwife solutions.

How to Write an Editorial

The rise of social media has provided more people with a free platform to express their platforms. Consequently, people are no longer sure of what it takes to write editorials . However, it doesn’t mean that you can master how to write an editorial that impresses editors. This section shares insights to help you compose a great editorial that speaks to your constituents.

Choose an Attention-Grabbing Topic

Start your journey by selecting an interesting topic with current news value and serves a defined goal. At times, handling a controversial topic can attract people.

Research and Gather Facts

Next, gather the facts surrounding your topic before presenting it to your readers. You must research the facts so that your opinion isn’t based on your feelings. Use credible sources and collect the latest facts surrounding your topic.

Drafting the Editorial

Draft your paper to be short and clear, at least 600 to 800 words. Additionally, avoid using jargon.

  • Introduction. Make its intro as attractive as possible. You can open it with relevant stats, a quote from a famous person your readers respect, or a thought-provoking question.
  • Body. The body should address all the details surrounding your topic. It should follow the 5 W’s and H pattern (what, when, where, who, why, and how). This section should address opposition and provide evidence to support your stance. When addressing problems, propose valid and practical solutions.
  • Conclusion. End your editorial with a strong, thought-provoking statement. Give your readers a sense of closure and completeness from this section.

Proofread and Edit

Polish your editorial by editing and proofing it for styling, grammar, and spelling perfection before submitting it.

Tips for Writing a Good Editorial

Do you want to master how to write an editorial article ? Below are tips to help you up your editorial writing game.

  • Be decisive. A great editorial takes a firm position on a matter. Whenever you mention a contrary position, you immediately show readers why it’s inaccurate and why readers should agree with your stand.
  • Provide fresh ideas. Research your topic well to provide readers with fresh ideas. Whereas people have ideas on specific issues, adding a fresh angle to them makes your article more valuable.
  • Offer solutions. If you address a problem, your article should provide possible solutions. Don’t just describe problems for which you can’t prescribe solutions.
  • Focus on your interests. Whenever possible, select a topic you are passionate about to be better placed to address an issue you care about. Do you care about quality education? Then don’t write on maternal health.

Types of Editorials

It’s essential to understand the types of editorials before you write an editorial for a chosen publication. We have four types of editorials, categorized based on their tone and purpose. These categories are:

  • Explaining and Interpreting: These editorials let editors explain how they handle sensitive and controversial topics.
  • Criticizing: Such editorials focus on the problem rather than the solution. They criticize actions, decisions, or particular situations.
  • Persuading: These editorials propose solutions and convince readers to take appropriate actions towards a matter.
  • Praising: Such editorials show support for and commend notable actions by organizations or individuals.

How Do Publications Choose Editorials?

So, how do newspapers and other publications choose an editorial for students ? Most major publications employ op-ed columnists to provide a given number of published editorials in a given year. Some college and high school newspapers have their own columnists who regularly provide editorial content. Most of these publications also solicit guest editorials from external sources. These editorials are like letters to editors but still receive a more generous word count.

The editors use their discretion to accept or reject some editorials. For instance, if they think an editorial touches a needlessly controversial subject or exposes the publication to legal implications, they reject it. In other cases, an editorial board may send the article to the writer to revise or streamline it before resubmitting it for publication.

Editorial Example

Whenever you are stuck on how to write an editorial,l examples will be of much help. This section contains an example regarding the educational system to inspire your writing.

A Critical Editorial Example: A Clarion Call to Reform a Flawed Education System

Our education system is flawed and outdated in many areas and needs urgent reforms. It has many outdated teaching methods that don’t fully engage students. For instance, rote learning stifles innovation and critical thinking, leaving learners ill-equipped when they enter the real world.

Class sizes are still too large, hindering personalized learner attention. Overworked instructors struggle to address student needs. The obsession with standardized testing emphasizes memorization over creative learning. Consequently, it stresses learners and undermines the joy of learning.

Further, the system is unequal. For example, wealthier districts receive more funding, while underprivileged schools lack basic resources. This inequality perpetuates a vicious cycle of disadvantage and limits opportunities for many underprivileged learners.

Thus, everyone must demand radical and immediate reforms. We must all demand innovative teaching methods, smaller class sizes, and equal funding to transform the education landscape. Let’s call for reforms and create an education system that empowers our children, into whose hands we’ll leave our nation.

Editorial Essay Topics

Mastering how to write an editorial paper requires you to choose appropriate topics. To help you do that, we have selected hot sample topics for editorial essay projects. Check them out to jumpstart your next assignment.

  • The role of junk food in increasing obesity.
  • Is PlayStation turning our children into zombies?

  • The dark side of the selfie culture.

  • Solar Eclipse 2024

What the World Has Learned From Past Eclipses

C louds scudded over the small volcanic island of Principe, off the western coast of Africa, on the afternoon of May 29, 1919. Arthur Eddington, director of the Cambridge Observatory in the U.K., waited for the Sun to emerge. The remains of a morning thunderstorm could ruin everything.

The island was about to experience the rare and overwhelming sight of a total solar eclipse. For six minutes, the longest eclipse since 1416, the Moon would completely block the face of the Sun, pulling a curtain of darkness over a thin stripe of Earth. Eddington traveled into the eclipse path to try and prove one of the most consequential ideas of his age: Albert Einstein’s new theory of general relativity.

Eddington, a physicist, was one of the few people at the time who understood the theory, which Einstein proposed in 1915. But many other scientists were stymied by the bizarre idea that gravity is not a mutual attraction, but a warping of spacetime. Light itself would be subject to this warping, too. So an eclipse would be the best way to prove whether the theory was true, because with the Sun’s light blocked by the Moon, astronomers would be able to see whether the Sun’s gravity bent the light of distant stars behind it.

Two teams of astronomers boarded ships steaming from Liverpool, England, in March 1919 to watch the eclipse and take the measure of the stars. Eddington and his team went to Principe, and another team led by Frank Dyson of the Greenwich Observatory went to Sobral, Brazil.

Totality, the complete obscuration of the Sun, would be at 2:13 local time in Principe. Moments before the Moon slid in front of the Sun, the clouds finally began breaking up. For a moment, it was totally clear. Eddington and his group hastily captured images of a star cluster found near the Sun that day, called the Hyades, found in the constellation of Taurus. The astronomers were using the best astronomical technology of the time, photographic plates, which are large exposures taken on glass instead of film. Stars appeared on seven of the plates, and solar “prominences,” filaments of gas streaming from the Sun, appeared on others.

Eddington wanted to stay in Principe to measure the Hyades when there was no eclipse, but a ship workers’ strike made him leave early. Later, Eddington and Dyson both compared the glass plates taken during the eclipse to other glass plates captured of the Hyades in a different part of the sky, when there was no eclipse. On the images from Eddington’s and Dyson’s expeditions, the stars were not aligned. The 40-year-old Einstein was right.

“Lights All Askew In the Heavens,” the New York Times proclaimed when the scientific papers were published. The eclipse was the key to the discovery—as so many solar eclipses before and since have illuminated new findings about our universe.

Telescope used to observe a total solar eclipse, Sobral, Brazil, 1919.

To understand why Eddington and Dyson traveled such distances to watch the eclipse, we need to talk about gravity.

Since at least the days of Isaac Newton, who wrote in 1687, scientists thought gravity was a simple force of mutual attraction. Newton proposed that every object in the universe attracts every other object in the universe, and that the strength of this attraction is related to the size of the objects and the distances among them. This is mostly true, actually, but it’s a little more nuanced than that.

On much larger scales, like among black holes or galaxy clusters, Newtonian gravity falls short. It also can’t accurately account for the movement of large objects that are close together, such as how the orbit of Mercury is affected by its proximity the Sun.

Albert Einstein’s most consequential breakthrough solved these problems. General relativity holds that gravity is not really an invisible force of mutual attraction, but a distortion. Rather than some kind of mutual tug-of-war, large objects like the Sun and other stars respond relative to each other because the space they are in has been altered. Their mass is so great that they bend the fabric of space and time around themselves.

Read More: 10 Surprising Facts About the 2024 Solar Eclipse

This was a weird concept, and many scientists thought Einstein’s ideas and equations were ridiculous. But others thought it sounded reasonable. Einstein and others knew that if the theory was correct, and the fabric of reality is bending around large objects, then light itself would have to follow that bend. The light of a star in the great distance, for instance, would seem to curve around a large object in front of it, nearer to us—like our Sun. But normally, it’s impossible to study stars behind the Sun to measure this effect. Enter an eclipse.

Einstein’s theory gives an equation for how much the Sun’s gravity would displace the images of background stars. Newton’s theory predicts only half that amount of displacement.

Eddington and Dyson measured the Hyades cluster because it contains many stars; the more stars to distort, the better the comparison. Both teams of scientists encountered strange political and natural obstacles in making the discovery, which are chronicled beautifully in the book No Shadow of a Doubt: The 1919 Eclipse That Confirmed Einstein's Theory of Relativity , by the physicist Daniel Kennefick. But the confirmation of Einstein’s ideas was worth it. Eddington said as much in a letter to his mother: “The one good plate that I measured gave a result agreeing with Einstein,” he wrote , “and I think I have got a little confirmation from a second plate.”

The Eddington-Dyson experiments were hardly the first time scientists used eclipses to make profound new discoveries. The idea dates to the beginnings of human civilization.

Careful records of lunar and solar eclipses are one of the greatest legacies of ancient Babylon. Astronomers—or astrologers, really, but the goal was the same—were able to predict both lunar and solar eclipses with impressive accuracy. They worked out what we now call the Saros Cycle, a repeating period of 18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours in which eclipses appear to repeat. One Saros cycle is equal to 223 synodic months, which is the time it takes the Moon to return to the same phase as seen from Earth. They also figured out, though may not have understood it completely, the geometry that enables eclipses to happen.

The path we trace around the Sun is called the ecliptic. Our planet’s axis is tilted with respect to the ecliptic plane, which is why we have seasons, and why the other celestial bodies seem to cross the same general path in our sky.

As the Moon goes around Earth, it, too, crosses the plane of the ecliptic twice in a year. The ascending node is where the Moon moves into the northern ecliptic. The descending node is where the Moon enters the southern ecliptic. When the Moon crosses a node, a total solar eclipse can happen. Ancient astronomers were aware of these points in the sky, and by the apex of Babylonian civilization, they were very good at predicting when eclipses would occur.

Two and a half millennia later, in 2016, astronomers used these same ancient records to measure the change in the rate at which Earth’s rotation is slowing—which is to say, the amount by which are days are lengthening, over thousands of years.

By the middle of the 19 th century, scientific discoveries came at a frenetic pace, and eclipses powered many of them. In October 1868, two astronomers, Pierre Jules César Janssen and Joseph Norman Lockyer, separately measured the colors of sunlight during a total eclipse. Each found evidence of an unknown element, indicating a new discovery: Helium, named for the Greek god of the Sun. In another eclipse in 1869, astronomers found convincing evidence of another new element, which they nicknamed coronium—before learning a few decades later that it was not a new element, but highly ionized iron, indicating that the Sun’s atmosphere is exceptionally, bizarrely hot. This oddity led to the prediction, in the 1950s, of a continual outflow that we now call the solar wind.

And during solar eclipses between 1878 and 1908, astronomers searched in vain for a proposed extra planet within the orbit of Mercury. Provisionally named Vulcan, this planet was thought to exist because Newtonian gravity could not fully describe Mercury’s strange orbit. The matter of the innermost planet’s path was settled, finally, in 1915, when Einstein used general relativity equations to explain it.

Many eclipse expeditions were intended to learn something new, or to prove an idea right—or wrong. But many of these discoveries have major practical effects on us. Understanding the Sun, and why its atmosphere gets so hot, can help us predict solar outbursts that could disrupt the power grid and communications satellites. Understanding gravity, at all scales, allows us to know and to navigate the cosmos.

GPS satellites, for instance, provide accurate measurements down to inches on Earth. Relativity equations account for the effects of the Earth’s gravity and the distances between the satellites and their receivers on the ground. Special relativity holds that the clocks on satellites, which experience weaker gravity, seem to run slower than clocks under the stronger force of gravity on Earth. From the point of view of the satellite, Earth clocks seem to run faster. We can use different satellites in different positions, and different ground stations, to accurately triangulate our positions on Earth down to inches. Without those calculations, GPS satellites would be far less precise.

This year, scientists fanned out across North America and in the skies above it will continue the legacy of eclipse science. Scientists from NASA and several universities and other research institutions will study Earth’s atmosphere; the Sun’s atmosphere; the Sun’s magnetic fields; and the Sun’s atmospheric outbursts, called coronal mass ejections.

When you look up at the Sun and Moon on the eclipse , the Moon’s day — or just observe its shadow darkening the ground beneath the clouds, which seems more likely — think about all the discoveries still yet waiting to happen, just behind the shadow of the Moon.

Students Are Likely Writing Millions of Papers With AI

Illustration of four hands holding pencils that are connected to a central brain

Students have submitted more than 22 million papers that may have used generative AI in the past year, new data released by plagiarism detection company Turnitin shows.

A year ago, Turnitin rolled out an AI writing detection tool that was trained on its trove of papers written by students as well as other AI-generated texts. Since then, more than 200 million papers have been reviewed by the detector, predominantly written by high school and college students. Turnitin found that 11 percent may contain AI-written language in 20 percent of its content, with 3 percent of the total papers reviewed getting flagged for having 80 percent or more AI writing. (Turnitin is owned by Advance, which also owns Condé Nast, publisher of WIRED.) Turnitin says its detector has a false positive rate of less than 1 percent when analyzing full documents.

ChatGPT’s launch was met with knee-jerk fears that the English class essay would die . The chatbot can synthesize information and distill it near-instantly—but that doesn’t mean it always gets it right. Generative AI has been known to hallucinate , creating its own facts and citing academic references that don’t actually exist. Generative AI chatbots have also been caught spitting out biased text on gender and race . Despite those flaws, students have used chatbots for research, organizing ideas, and as a ghostwriter . Traces of chatbots have even been found in peer-reviewed, published academic writing .

Teachers understandably want to hold students accountable for using generative AI without permission or disclosure. But that requires a reliable way to prove AI was used in a given assignment. Instructors have tried at times to find their own solutions to detecting AI in writing, using messy, untested methods to enforce rules , and distressing students. Further complicating the issue, some teachers are even using generative AI in their grading processes.

Detecting the use of gen AI is tricky. It’s not as easy as flagging plagiarism, because generated text is still original text. Plus, there’s nuance to how students use gen AI; some may ask chatbots to write their papers for them in large chunks or in full, while others may use the tools as an aid or a brainstorm partner.

Students also aren't tempted by only ChatGPT and similar large language models. So-called word spinners are another type of AI software that rewrites text, and may make it less obvious to a teacher that work was plagiarized or generated by AI. Turnitin’s AI detector has also been updated to detect word spinners, says Annie Chechitelli, the company’s chief product officer. It can also flag work that was rewritten by services like spell checker Grammarly, which now has its own generative AI tool . As familiar software increasingly adds generative AI components, what students can and can’t use becomes more muddled.

Detection tools themselves have a risk of bias. English language learners may be more likely to set them off; a 2023 study found a 61.3 percent false positive rate when evaluating Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exams with seven different AI detectors. The study did not examine Turnitin’s version. The company says it has trained its detector on writing from English language learners as well as native English speakers. A study published in October found that Turnitin was among the most accurate of 16 AI language detectors in a test that had the tool examine undergraduate papers and AI-generated papers.

Schools that use Turnitin had access to the AI detection software for a free pilot period, which ended at the start of this year. Chechitelli says a majority of the service’s clients have opted to purchase the AI detection. But the risks of false positives and bias against English learners have led some universities to ditch the tools for now. Montclair State University in New Jersey announced in November that it would pause use of Turnitin’s AI detector. Vanderbilt University and Northwestern University did the same last summer.

“This is hard. I understand why people want a tool,” says Emily Isaacs, executive director of the Office of Faculty Excellence at Montclair State. But Isaacs says the university is concerned about potentially biased results from AI detectors, as well as the fact that the tools can’t provide confirmation the way they can with plagiarism. Plus, Montclair State doesn’t want to put a blanket ban on AI, which will have some place in academia. With time and more trust in the tools, the policies could change. “It’s not a forever decision, it’s a now decision,” Isaacs says.

Chechitelli says the Turnitin tool shouldn’t be the only consideration in passing or failing a student. Instead, it’s a chance for teachers to start conversations with students that touch on all of the nuance in using generative AI. “People don’t really know where that line should be,” she says.

You Don’t Just See a Total Solar Eclipse. You Feel It Completely.

Illustration of a person in a desert sitting next to a truck, with the total solar eclipse in the sky reflected in the windshield.

By Ryan Milligan

Dr. Milligan is a senior lecturer in astrophysics at Queen’s University in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Almost one year ago, in the middle of the night, I drove from my hometown, Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Dublin to catch an early morning flight to Munich. From there I caught another plane to Bangkok, another to Singapore and yet another to Perth in Western Australia. There, I rented a camper van and began a drive of more than 750 miles north to the town of Exmouth on a remote peninsula on the northwest coast of the continent.

This was the only reasonably accessible location on the planet with decent weather prospects from which to view the total solar eclipse on April 20, 2023. The entire event lasted 62 seconds. It was the 10th total solar eclipse I’d traveled to witness.

Even as a professional solar physicist, I find it difficult to convey why eclipse chasers like me go to such extraordinary lengths to witness such a fleeting phenomenon, again and again. I was extra determined to make the pilgrimage last year after I was thwarted by clouds in Chile in December 2020, and I couldn’t afford the eye-watering cost of traveling to Antarctica in 2021. I needed to whet my appetite before embarking on another expedition to see the totality of the April 8 eclipse in Mazatlán, Mexico.

It may sound absurd, but there is no other celestial event that anyone I know would devote so much time and effort to seeing. If you wish to see the northern lights, you can hop on a plane to Iceland or Norway and have a fairly decent chance of seeing them in the winter months. If you are on the nightside of the planet during a lunar eclipse and the skies are clear, you just need to go outside and look up to see it happening. But unless you are fortunate enough to live within or close to the path of totality, witnessing a total solar eclipse will probably require meticulous planning and marshaling time and money to get you to an optimal location and a bit of luck to make sure the weather forecasts you’ve pored over hold true.

Believe me, it is worth the effort.

A total solar eclipse is not something that you see — it’s something that you experience. You can feel the temperature around you begin to drop by as much as 15 degrees over the five to 10 minutes that lead up to the eclipse. The birds and other animals go silent. The light becomes eerie and morphs into a dusky, muted twilight, and you begin to see stark, misplaced shadows abound. A column of darkness in the sky hurtles toward you at over 1,000 miles per hour as the moon’s shadow falls neatly over the sun, turning day into temporary night — nothing like the calming sunset we take for granted every day. Sometimes, a few stars or planets begin to appear faintly in the sky as your eyes get used to the new darkness.

The hairs stand up on the back of your neck and the adrenaline kicks in as your brain tries to make sense of what is going on. But it cannot. It has no other point of reference to compare these sensations to. A total eclipse elicits a unique, visceral, primeval feeling that cannot be evoked by a photograph or a video or a newspaper article, and that can be experienced only within the path of totality when the moon completely obscures the disk of the sun.

And then of course there is the crowning glory: the sun’s corona, the pearly white outer atmosphere of our nearest star that we can otherwise see only using a fleet of dedicated solar-observing spacecraft. It has an ethereal beauty that is challenging to articulate.

For those brief few moments when the corona appears bright in the sky, all the effort made to experience the totality becomes worth it. You want to soak up every second of it and process every feeling, because it is over all too soon. Once the moon’s shadow has passed you feel both exhilarated and deflated because the next opportunity to experience this sensation again could be years away and on the other side of the world. And it is something that you will crave.

There is also, of course, the professional motivation for me to gaze upon the subject of my research with my own eyes. Most other astrophysicists only get to look at exploding stars or distant comets through gargantuan telescopes, where they appear as mere pixels on a computer screen or a squiggle on a graph. It’s easy to get detached from the beauty of astronomy when your job becomes more focused on securing grant funding, teaching, administrative duties and bureaucracy. Eclipse chasing reminds me why I chose this field of work in the first place and reignites my passion — and I want to inspire my students with that same passion.

Each eclipse is different. The shape and structure of the solar corona varies over the course of each solar cycle. The longer the duration of the eclipse, the darker one’s surroundings are likely to seem. And sandwiched between the sun’s “surface” and the corona is the crimson red chromosphere, the layer of the sun’s atmosphere that I have been researching for almost 20 years to understand its relationship to solar flares. In Australia the briefness of totality meant that this region was exceptionally bright and distinguished, and one could even spot some solar prominences (clouds of hydrogen gas suspended above the chromosphere) with the naked eye. That may also be the case on Monday.

People mistakenly think that a partial eclipse is good enough. It is not. When outside the path of totality, the visibility of even 1 percent of the sun’s disk is enough to outshine the entire corona. The buzz around this year’s eclipse through North America has reached a fever pitch not seen since the “Great American Eclipse” of 2017. The duration of totality will be almost twice as long — almost four and a half minutes. (Whether the weather will cooperate is still an open question .)

This is far from the first time I’ve tried to cajole people into experiencing the totality in full. In 2017, I persuaded several of my friends in the United States to join me in Nebraska to enjoy the spectacle without forcing them to traipse halfway across the globe. They later told me that they at first thought I may have been somewhat exaggerating the experience because of my professional bias, but when the eclipse was over, I knew that they finally got it. Their faces were overcome with emotion and they struggled to articulate how they were feeling. Because it wasn’t just about what they had seen — it was about what they had experienced.
